Abstract

International audience; The contamination of the topsoil of 262 woody habitats around a former lead smelter in the North of France was assessed. In this urbanized and industrialized area, these kinds of habitats comprise of hedges, groves, small woods, anthropogenic creations and one large forest. Except for the latter, which is 3km away, these woody habitat soils often present a high anthropization degree (a significant amount of pebbles and stones related to human activities) with a high metal contamination. In the studied woody habitat topsoils, Cd, Pb and Zn concentrations largely exceeded those of agricultural topsoils located in the same environmental context. Therefore, atmospheric emissions from the smelter are not the only cause of the high contamination of the woody habitat soils. This last one is related to the nature and the contamination level of deposit in relation with human activities (rubbles, slag, soils, etc). With regard to the results obtained with chemical extractions, the mobility of Cd, Pb and Zn in these soils is also greater than in agricultural soils. In the forest, pollutant solubility is increased by soil acidic pH. The variability of the physico-chemical parameters and the high metal contamination of the topsoils are the main characteristics of the woody habitats located around the former smelter. Although never taken into account during risk assessment, the disturbance of these environmental components could have important biogeochemical impacts (nutrients and metal cycles). Moreover, any modification of the soils' use could potentially cause mobilization and transfer of the pollutants to the biosphere. Six years after the closure of the smelter, and as social and economic pressures considerably increase in this area, the study of these peculiar ecosystems is necessary to understand and predict the bioavailability, transfer, bioaccumulation and effects of pollutants in food chains.

Abstract

The study of root-associated microbial communities is important to understand the natural processes involved in plant recolonisation at degraded areas. Root associated bacterial and fungal communities of woody species colonising a red gypsum landfill (a metal-enriched environment) were characterised through metabarcoding. Among trees naturally growing on the landfill, Betula pendula is the only tree species in the centre of the area, whereas companion tree species such as Populus nigra, P. tremula and Salix purpurea were present on the edges. The bacterial community was dominated by Proteobacteria (38%), Actinobacteria (35%) and Bacteroidetes (20%) and the most abundant bacterial OTU belonged to the family Streptomycetaceae. The fungal community was dominated by Ascomycota (60%) and Basidiomycota (30%) and the most abundant family was Pyronemataceae. Analysis of similarities, heatmap and hierarchical cluster analysis showed that B. pendula grown in the centre of the landfill harboured a specific microbial community, which was unique and different, not only from other tree species (Populus or Salix spp.), but also from other B. pendula growing at the edges. Our findings on relevant indicator OTUs associated to the birches located in the centre of the landfill (such as Otu00716 Catellatospora sp. (family Micromonosporaceae, phylum Actinobacteria) or Otu4_35502 Russula sp. (family Russulaceae, phylum Basidiomycota)) may have important implications for the successful revegetation of these harsh environments using microbial-based phytostabilisation approaches.

Abstract

The pollution of natural waters and sediments with metals derived from acid mine drainage (AMD) is a global environmental problem. However, the processes governing the transportation and transformation of AMD metals such as Cd in mountainous areas are poorly understood. In this study, the Cd isotopic composition and Cd concentration of river water and sediments (16 sampling sites) from an AMD-affected river in southern China were determined. Cd concentration in river water declined from its source at a tailings dam (304 μg L−1) to a point 14 km downstream (0.32 μg L−1). Sediment Cd concentration ranged from 0.18 to 39.9 μg g−1, suggesting that anthropogenic Cd is derived primarily from the tailing dam and easily enters the solid phase of the river. Isotopic data showed that the dissolved Cd in rivers was characterized by δ114/110Cd values ranging from 0.21‰ to 1.03‰, with a mean of 0.48‰. The greatest Cd isotope difference was observed between the water and sediments in the LW dam (Δ114/110Cdriver-sediment = 1.61‰, site 1), likely due to a rapid weathering dissolution of the ore tailings. In the river's upper reach (sites 2–3), isotope difference between river and sediment (Δ114/110Cdriver-sediment) ranged from 1.0‰ to 0.91‰. This suggests that a host of secondary processes might have impacted Cd isotope fractionation, including adsorption, ternary complexation and/or (co)precipitation of Cd on secondary oxides and hydroxides. In the middle and lower reaches, an abruptly elevated δ114/110Cd value near farmland (site 10) suggests the existence of a second Cd source. Based on the chemical properties of water samples we can attribute this heavy isotope signature to agricultural fertilizer and drainage from agricultural fields. Our results suggest that Cd isotope is a tracer for identifying and tracking Cd sources and attenuation mechanisms (adsorption/(co)precipitation) in a complex mountain watershed.

Abstract

International audience; Nickel (Ni) agromining of ultramafic soils has been proposed as an eco-friendly option for metal recovery, which can also improve the fertility and quality of these low productive soils. The selection of adequate plant species and the analysis of their performance under the different climatic conditions are of interest for optimising the process and evaluating its full viability. A one-year field experiment was carried out to evaluate the viability of the two Ni-hyperaccumulating Mediterranean species, Alyssum murale and Leptoplax emarginata, for agromining purposes in ultramafic soils under a humid-temperate climate. Field plots of 50 m(2) were established and the soil was fertilised with gypsum and inorganic NPK fertilisers prior to cropping. Alyssum murale produced a slightly higher Ni yield than L. emarginata, but Ni bioaccumulation was dependent on the plant phenological stage for both species, being maximal at mid-flowering (4.2 and 3.0 kg Ni ha(-1), respectively). In both species, Ni was mainly stored in the leaves, especially in leaves of vegetative stems, but also in flowers and fruits in the case of L. emarginata. The main contributors to Ni yield of A. murale were flowering stems and their leaves, while for L. emarginata they were flowering stems and fruits. Implementing the agromining system increased soil nutrient availability, and modified microbial community structure and metabolic activity (due to fertilisation and plant root activity). The soil bacterial communities were dominated by Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Acidobacteria and Chloroflexi, and the agromining crops modified the relative abundance of some phyla (increasing Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Nitrospirae and reducing Acidobacteria and Planctomycetes). Cultivating A. murale increased the densities of total culturable bacteria, while L. emarginata selected Ni-tolerant bacteria in its rhizosphere. In summary, both species showed great potential for their use in Ni agromining systems, although optimising soil and crop management practices could improve the phytoextraction efficiency. Abstract

Despite their importance both in soil functioning and as soil indicators, the response of microarthropods to various land uses is still unclear. The aim of this study is to assess the effect of land use on microarthropod diversity and determine whether a soil's biological quality follows the same physicochemical quality-based gradient from forest, agriculture-grassland, agriculture-arable land, vineyards, urban vegetable gardens to urban, industrial, traffic, mining and military areas. A database compiling the characteristics of 758 communities has been established. We calculated Collembola community indices including: species richness, Pielou's evenness index, collembolan life forms, the abundance of Collembola and of Acari, the Acari/Collembola abundance ratio, and the Collembolan ecomorphological index. Results show that agricultural land use was the most harmful for soil microarthropod biodiversity, whilst urban and industrial land uses give the same level of soil biological quality as forests do. Furthermore, differences between the proportions of Acari and ecomorphological groups were observed between land uses. This study, defining soil microarthropod diversity baselines for current land uses, should therefore help in managing and preserving soil microarthropod biodiversity, especially by supporting the preservation of soil quality. Abstract

WOS:000361191100023; International audience; Soil pollution has adverse effects on the performance and life history traits of microorganisms, plants, and animals, yet evidence indicates that even the most polluted sites can support structurally-complex and dynamic ecosystems. The present study aims at determining whether and how litter decomposition, one of the most important soil ecological processes leaf, is affected in a highly trace-metal polluted site. We postulated that past steel mill activities resulting in soil pollution and associated changes in soil characteristics would influence the rate of litter decomposition through two non-exclusive pathways: altered litter chemistry and responses of decomposers to lethal and sub-lethal toxic stress. We carried out a litter-bag experiment using Populus tremula L. leaf litter collected at, and allowed to decompose in, a trace metal polluted site and in three unpolluted sites used as controls. We designed a fully-factorial transplant experimental design to assess effects of litter origin and exposure site on the rate of litter decomposition. We further determined initial litter chemistry, fungal biomass, mesofauna abundance in litter bags, and the soil macrofauna community. Irrespective of the site of litter exposure, litter originating from the polluted site had a two-fold faster decomposition than litter from the unpolluted sites. Litter chemistry, notably the lignin content, seemed most important in explaining the degradation rate of the leaf litter. Abundance of meso and macro-detritivores was higher at the polluted site than at the unpolluted sites. However, litter decomposition proceeded at similar rates in polluted and unpolluted sites. Our results show that trace metal pollution and associated soil and litter changes do not necessarily weaken consumer control on litter decomposition through lethal and sub-lethal toxic stress.

Abstract

International audience; To assess the impact ofmetal-rich brownfields on groundwater quality, the fluxes in a Technosol developed on a former iron industry settling pond were studied. Intact soil monoliths (1 m(2) x 2 m) were extracted and placed in lysimeters. Dynamics of fluxes of metals and solutes under varying vegetation cover were monitored over the course of four years. Soil hydraulic properties were also determined. Results showed that the Technosol has a high retention capacity for water and metals, in relation to its mineral components and resulting chemical and physical properties. As a consequence, metal fluxes were limited. However, soluble compounds, such as SO42-, were found at significant concentrations in the leachates. The presence of a dense and deeply-rooted vegetation cover limited water-and solute-fluxes by increasing evapotranspiration and water uptake, thereby reducing the risks of transfer of potentially toxic compounds to local groundwater sources. However, vegetation development may induce changes in soil chemical (e.g. pH, redox potential) and physical properties (e.g. structure), favoring metal mobilization and transport. Revegetation is a valuable management solution for former iron industry settling ponds, provided vegetation does not change soil physico-chemical conditions in the long term. Monitored natural attenuation is required.

Abstract

This work was conducted to study the evolution of the solubility of selected metals during the aeration of an anoxic sediment. Batch experiments were carried out for 76 days with a metal-polluted dredged sediment. The pH, Eh and concentration of Al, Cu, Fe, Hg, Pb and Zn were periodically recorded. Results showed that during the early stages of aeration, the solubility of metals increased rapidly but was then followed by fast re-adsorption. As a consequence, after 14 days most of the metals excepted Cu and Zn were present at low or undetectable concentrations in solution. Re-adsorption of Zn was observed to be much slower during the first two weeks, whereas solubilisation of Cu increased gradually during months after land disposal. According to speciation calculations, Cu solubilisation was in part due to complexation in solution by carbonates. In the case of Hg, although complexation by dissolved organic matter (DOM) could be expected, re-adsorption was the dominant process. However, more knowledge about the behaviour of the DOM present in anoxic sediments is needed in order to make more quantitative statements about the mobility of heavy metals contained in dredged material.
