Police officers often lack the appropriate training to deal with children and young people with mental health or behavioural problems. In some cases, the behaviour of these children and young people is misinterpreted, leading to excessive punishment or even violence. The Federation of Families for Children's Mental Health emphasizes that violence is a community problem and must have community-based answers. Police officers and agencies should not be given the main responsibility for resolving this problem. The community as a whole must work to create trust and ensure that children with mental health or behavioural problems are handled appropriately.
