Sound speed is a critical parameter in ocean acoustic studies, as it determines the propagation and interpretation of recorded sounds. The potential for exploiting oceanic vessel noise as a sound source of opportunity to estimate ocean sound speed profile is investigated. A deep learning-based inversion scheme, relying upon the underwater radiated noise of moving vessels measured by a single hydrophone, is proposed. The dataset used for this study consists of Automatic Identification System data and acoustic recordings of maritime vessels transiting through the Santa Barbara Channel between January 2015 and December 2017. The acoustic recordings and vessel descriptors are used as predictors for regressing sound speed for each meter in the top 200 m of the water column, where sound speeds are most variable. Multiple (typically ranging between 4 and 10) transits were recorded each day; therefore, this dataset provides an opportunity to investigate whether multiple acoustic observations can be leveraged together to improve inversion estimates. The proposed single-transit and multi-transit models resulted in depth-averaged root-mean-square errors of 1.79 and 1.55 m/s, respectively, compared to the seasonal average predictions of 2.80 m/s.

Human activities introduce high levels of noise into the ocean. Commercial shipping, in particular, has increased to the point that ships make a larger contribution to ocean noise than natural noise sources for most ocean locations and over a broad range of frequencies. Primeval ocean noise levels, those that would have been experienced before the advent of human-made noise in the ocean, are largely unknown. Ocean noise monitoring efforts began post-industrialization, leaving baseline sound levels under which marine organisms evolved unclear. This study modeled primeval (wind-driven) ocean noise levels and modern (ship noise plus wind noise) ocean noise levels in the Santa Barbara Channel off Southern California. The modern noise levels were validated with acoustic measurements from two sites equipped with High-frequency Acoustic Recording Packages. There was good agreement between the modern noise level models when compared to measured levels for high frequencies, and at a site shielded by islands from long range sound propagation. The lower frequency acoustic environment, modeled at 50 Hz, was more degraded than the higher frequency noise levels, modeled at 1000 Hz. This model can be used to identify target regions and times for noise reduction efforts, as well as model future scenarios for noise reduction to identify techniques with the greatest potential for conservation.

Phonatory instabilities and involuntary register transitions can occur during singing. However, little is known regarding the mechanisms which govern such transitions. To investigate this phenomenon, we systematically varied laryngeal muscle activation and airflow in an in vivo canine larynx model during phonation. We calculated voice range profiles showing average nerve activations for all combinations of fundamental frequency (F0) and sound pressure level (SPL). Further, we determined closed-quotient (CQ) and minimum-posterior-area (MPA) based on high-speed video recordings. While different combinations of muscle activation favored different combinations of F0 and SPL, in the investigated larynx there was a consistent region of instability at about 400 Hz which essentially precluded phonation. An explanation for this region may be a larynx specific coupling between sound source and subglottal tract or an effect based purely on larynx morphology. Register transitions crossed this region, with different combinations of cricothyroid and thyroarytenoid muscle (TA) activation stabilizing higher or lower neighboring frequencies. Observed patterns in CQ and MPA dependent on TA activation reproduced patterns found in singers in previous work. Lack of control of TA stimulation may result in phonation instabilities, and enhanced control of TA stimulation may help to avoid involuntary register transitions, especially in the singing voice.

This paper first reviews well known analytical techniques for predicting the Rossiter modes of a cavity in compressible flow. We combine existing methods to improve the performance in compressible flow. Second, we introduce a method based on an effective length to depth ratio of the cavity from experimental results for predicting frequencies across Mach numbers. Finally, the fractional vortex speed used in the Rossiter equation and its derivatives is calculated from high subsonic (M 0.55) to supersonic (M 2.3) for use in future cavity mode prediction.

The problem of characterizing voice quality has long caused debate and frustration. The richness of the available descriptive vocabulary is overwhelming, but the density and complexity of the information voices convey lead some to conclude that language can never adequately specify what we hear. Others argue that terminology lacks an empirical basis, so that language-based scales are inadequate a priori. Efforts to provide meaningful instrumental characterizations have also had limited success. Such measures may capture sound patterns but cannot at present explain what characteristics, intentions, or identity listeners attribute to the speaker based on those patterns. However, some terms continually reappear across studies. These terms align with acoustic dimensions accounting for variance across speakers and languages and correlate with size and arousal across species. This suggests that labels for quality rest on a bedrock of biology: We have evolved to perceive voices in terms of size/arousal, and these factors structure both voice acoustics and descriptive language. Such linkages could help integrate studies of signals and their meaning, producing a truly interdisciplinary approach to the study of voice.

Playbacks of ambient sound from healthy shallow coral reefs, known as acoustic enrichment (AE), can attract fish larvae and potentially coral larvae to degraded or artificial reefs. Large-scale studies face power supply challenges and require less intensive in-person surveys of recruited larvae (≤500 μm) and fish. Here, we present a preliminary assessment of artificial structure deployments with AE, conducted between July and September 2023 in Kane’ohe Bay (Oahu, Hawai’i). The artificial structures were designed to attract herbivorous juvenile reef fish and subsequently suppress algal growth. The work is part of a future artificial reef construction project in Hawai’i where in-person surveys and frequent battery replacements are logistically challenging. The deployments consisted of one control and one treatment site 65 m apart, in 5 m water depth and 10 m from the natural reef. To document ecosystem responses, both sites use open-source burst-mode autonomous cameras, a directional vector sensor seafloor acoustic recorder, and hydrophones. A 3.8 kW-h NiMh battery supply powers sound output for three weeks during evening hours. We discuss preliminary evaluations of AE and the validity of using autonomous cameras in evaluating performance in terms of fish recruitment and algal growth. [Work sponsored by DARPA.]

Observable dynamics, such as waves propagating on a surface, are generally governed by partial differential equations (PDEs), which are determined by the physical properties of the propagation media. The spatial variations of these properties lead to spatially dependent PDEs. It is useful in many fields to recover the variations from the observations of dynamical behaviors on the material. A method is proposed to form a map of the physical properties' spatial variations for a material via data-driven spatially dependent PDE identification and applied to recover acoustical properties (viscosity, attenuation, and phase speeds) for propagating waves. The proposed data-driven PDE identification scheme is based on ℓ1-norm minimization. It does not require any PDE term that is assumed active from the prior knowledge and is the first approach that is capable of identifying spatially dependent PDEs from measurements of phenomena. In addition, the method is efficient as a result of its non-iterative nature and can be robust against noise if used with an integration transformation technique. Clear speech can be more intelligible and better remembered than casual speech. Intelligibility and memory are assumed to be related—under the effortfulness hypothesis, the intelligibility-enhancing properties of clear speech (e.g., slower speech rate) facilitate processing, which frees up working memory resources and confers a memory advantage. However, prior work has only investigated naturally produced clear speech. How does clear speech influence memory for computer voices? The current study examines intelligibility and recognition memory of clear and casual speech for a text-to-speech (TTS) voice and a human voice, and compares older and younger adult listeners. In a speech-perception-in-noise task, clear speech was more intelligible than casual speech for both voices, the human was more intelligible than the TTS voice, and the younger adults performed better than the older adults. In an old-new recognition task, memory was better for the human voice relative to the TTS voice, consistent with the intelligibility results and the effortfulness hypothesis. However, inconsistent with the effortfulness hypothesis, there was no clear speech memory benefit, and the older adults performed better than the younger adults. The current findings are relevant for our understanding of human-computer interaction and theories about the relationship between speaking style and memory.

We report on a class of architected material lattices that exploit multi-stability and kinematic amplification to independently adjust the local effective mass, damping, and stiffness properties, thereby realizing congruent alterations to the acoustic dispersion response post-fabrication. The fundamental structural tuning element permits a broad range in the effective property space; moreover, its particular design carries the benefit of tuning without altering the original size/shape of the emerging structure. The relation between the tuning element geometry and the achieved variability in effective properties is explored. Bloch's theorem facilitates the dynamic analysis of representative one- and two-dimensional (1D/2D) systems, revealing, e.g., bandgap formation, migration, and closure and positive/negative metadamping in accordance with the tuning element configuration. To demonstrate a utility, we improvise a waveguide by appropriately patterning the tuning element configuration within a 2D system. We believe that the proposed strategy offers a new way to expand the range of performance and functionality of architected materials for elastodynamics.

Laryngeal mucus hydrates and lubricates the deformable tissue of the vocal folds and acts as a boundary layer with the airflow from the lungs. However, the effects of the mucus' viscoelasticity on phonation remain widely unknown and mucus has not yet been established in experimental procedures of voice research. In this study, four synthetic mucus samples were created on the basis of xanthan with focus on physiological frequency-dependent viscoelastic properties, which cover viscosities and elasticities over 2 orders of magnitude. An established ex vivo experimental setup was expanded by a reproducible and controllable application method of synthetic mucus. The application method and the suitability of the synthetic mucus samples were successfully verified by fluorescence evidence on the vocal folds even after oscillation experiments. Subsequently, the impact of mucus viscoelasticity on the oscillatory dynamics of the vocal folds, the subglottal pressure, and acoustic signal was investigated with 24 porcine larynges (2304 datasets). Despite the large differences of viscoelasticity, the phonatory characteristics remained stable with only minor statistically significant differences. Overall, this study increased the level of realism in the experimental setup for replication of the phonatory process enabling further research on pathological mucus and exploration of therapeutic options.

While the glottal flow is often simplified as one-dimensional (1D) in computational models of phonation to reduce computational costs, the 1D flow model has not been validated in left-right asymmetric vocal fold conditions, as often occur in both normal and pathological voice production. In this study, we performed three-dimensional (3D) and 1D flow simulations coupled to a two-mass model of adult male vocal folds and compared voice production at different degrees of left-right stiffness asymmetry. The flow and acoustic fields in 3D were obtained by solving the compressible Navier-Stokes equations using the volume penalization method with the moving vocal fold wall as an immersed boundary. Despite differences in the predicted flow pressure on vocal fold surface between the 1D and 3D flow models, the results showed reasonable agreement in vocal fold vibration patterns and selected voice outcome measures between the 1D and 3D models for the range of left-right asymmetric conditions investigated. This indicates that vocal fold properties play a larger role than the glottal flow in determining the overall pattern of vocal fold vibration and the produced voice, and the 1D flow simplification is sufficient in modeling phonation, at least for the simplified glottal geometry of this study.

Voice therapy often emphasizes vibratory sensations in the front part of the vocal tract during phonation to improve vocal efficiency. It remains unclear what laryngeal and vocal tract adjustments are elicited in speakers by this emphasis on oral vibratory sensations. Using a three-dimensional phonation model, this study aims to identify laryngeal and epilaryngeal adjustments that might produce maximal oral vibratory sensations during phonation, as quantified by the oral sound pressure level (SPL), and thus are likely to be elicited in voice therapy at different semi-occluded vocal tract configurations. Results show that maximum oral SPL occurs at intermediate vocal fold adduction configurations characterized by a trade-off between glottal gap and vocal fold vertical thickness. Epilaryngeal tube narrowing further increases the oral SPL in an open vocal tract, but has little effect on oral SPL in semi-occluded vocal tracts. Laryngeal and epilaryngeal configurations producing the maximum oral SPL generally have lower peak vocal fold contact pressure when producing a target output SPL. These favorable configurations are more easily identified in open vocal tracts than semi-occluded vocal tracts. However, semi-occlusion increases both the mean and dynamic oral pressure, which may familiarize speakers with oral vibratory sensations and facilitate adoption of favorable laryngeal configurations.

The recently named Rice's whale in the Gulf of Mexico is one of the most endangered whales in the world, and improved knowledge of spatiotemporal occurrence patterns is needed to support their recovery and conservation. Passive acoustic monitoring methods for determining spatiotemporal occurrence patterns require identifying the species' call repertoire. Rice's whale call repertoire remains unvalidated though several potential call types have been identified. This study uses sonobuoys and passive acoustic tagging to validate the source of potential call types and to characterize Rice's whale calls. During concurrent visual and acoustic surveys, acoustic-directed approaches were conducted to obtain visual verifications of sources of localized sounds. Of 28 acoustic-directed approaches, 79% led to sightings of balaenopterid whales, of which 10 could be positively identified to species as Rice's whales. Long-moan calls, downsweep sequences, and tonal-sequences are attributed to Rice's whales based on these matches, while anthropogenic sources are ruled out. A potential new call type, the low-frequency downsweep sequence, is characterized from tagged Rice's whale recordings. The validation and characterization of the Rice's whale call repertoire provides foundational information needed to use passive acoustic monitoring for better understanding and conservation of these critically endangered whales.

Substantial evidence suggests that sensitivity to the difference between the major vs minor musical scales may be bimodally distributed. Much of this evidence comes from experiments using the "3-task." On each trial in the 3-task, the listener hears a rapid, random sequence of tones containing equal numbers of notes of either a G major or G minor triad and strives (with feedback) to judge which type of "tone-scramble" it was. This study asks whether the bimodal distribution in 3-task performance is due to variation (across listeners) in sensitivity to differences in pitch. On each trial in a "pitch-difference task," the listener hears two tones and judges whether the second tone is higher or lower than the first. When the first tone is roved (rather than fixed throughout the task), performance varies dramatically across listeners with median threshold approximately equal to a quarter-tone. Strikingly, nearly all listeners with thresholds higher than a quarter-tone performed near chance in the 3-task. Across listeners with thresholds below a quarter-tone, 3-task performance was uniformly distributed from chance to ceiling; thus, the large, lower mode of the distribution in 3-task performance is produced mainly by listeners with roved pitch-difference thresholds greater than a quarter-tone.

This study replicates and extends the recent findings of Lee, Keating, and Kreiman [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 146(3), 1568-1579 (2019)] on acoustic voice variation in read speech, which showed remarkably similar acoustic voice spaces for groups of female and male talkers and the individual talkers within these groups. Principal component analysis was applied to acoustic indices of voice quality measured from phone conversations for 99/100 of the same talkers studied previously. The acoustic voice spaces derived from spontaneous speech are highly similar to those based on read speech, except that unlike read speech, variability in fundamental frequency accounted for significant acoustic variability. Implications of these findings for prototype models of speaker recognition and discrimination are considered.

Three killer whale ecotypes are found in the Northeastern Pacific: residents, transients, and offshores. These ecotypes can be discriminated in passive acoustic data based on distinct pulsed call repertoires. Killer whale acoustic encounters for which ecotypes were assigned based on pulsed call matching were used to characterize the ecotype-specific echolocation clicks. Recordings were made using seafloor-mounted sensors at shallow (∼120 m) and deep (∼1400 m) monitoring locations off the coast of Washington state. All ecotypes' echolocation clicks were characterized by energy peaks between 12 and 19 kHz, however, resident clicks featured sub peaks at 13.7 and 18.8 kHz, while offshore clicks had a single peak at 14.3 kHz. Transient clicks were rare and were characterized by lower peak frequencies (12.8 kHz). Modal inter-click intervals (ICIs) were consistent but indistinguishable for resident and offshore killer whale encounters at the shallow site (0.21-0.22 s). Offshore ICIs were longer and more variable at the deep site, and no modal ICI was apparent for the transient ecotype. Resident and offshore killer whale ecotype may be identified and distinguished in large passive acoustic datasets based on properties of their echolocation clicks, however, transient echolocation may be unsuitable in isolation as a cue for monitoring applications.

Over the past decades, metamaterials—whose engineered internal architecture grants unusual or extraordinary macroscopic response—have garnered increasing attention from researchers as the desire to shape material behavior beyond natural limitations (e.g., chemistry) arises within several areas of materials science and engineering. The bulk of reported acoustic metamaterial architectures are passive such that their properties and functions are fixed at fabrication. Nevertheless, a tuning capacity is desirable to expand the range of response, in general, and to allow for adaptation in the face of changing service requirements. Despite the diversity of proposed tuning strategies, most target the stiffness parameter alone, leaving the inertial and dissipative properties unaffected. In this presentation, we present a novel implementation of (geometric) bi-stability and kinematic amplification to independently tune the value and distribution of the effective mass, stiffness, and viscous damping within acoustic metamaterials, which impacts the dynamic response. Through analytical and numerical investigations of a 1D system, we show that the corresponding frequency band structure depends on the specific configurations of bi-stable elements within the unit cell. As the number of bi-stable elements per unit cell increases, so to do the number of unique dynamic responses to which to tailor the system. The proposed strategy significantly expands the property set available for tuning acoustic metamaterial performance post-fabrication.

This study compares human speaker discrimination performance for read speech versus casual conversations and explores differences between unfamiliar voices that are "easy" versus "hard" to "tell together" versus "tell apart." Thirty listeners were asked whether pairs of short style-matched or -mismatched, text-independent utterances represented the same or different speakers. Listeners performed better when stimuli were style-matched, particularly in read speech-read speech trials (equal error rate, EER, of 6.96% versus 15.12% in conversation-conversation trials). In contrast, the EER was 20.68% for the style-mismatched condition. When styles were matched, listeners' confidence was higher when speakers were the same versus different; however, style variation caused decreases in listeners' confidence for the "same speaker" trials, suggesting a higher dependency of this task on within-speaker variability. The speakers who were "easy" or "hard" to "tell together" were not the same as those who were "easy" or "hard" to "tell apart." Analysis of speaker acoustic spaces suggested that the difference observed in human approaches to "same speaker" and "different speaker" tasks depends primarily on listeners' different perceptual strategies when dealing with within- versus between-speaker acoustic variability.

Automatic algorithms for the detection and classification of sound are essential to the analysis of acoustic datasets with long duration. Metrics are needed to assess the performance characteristics of these algorithms. Four metrics for performance evaluation are discussed here: receiver-operating-characteristic (ROC) curves, detection-error-trade-off (DET) curves, precision-recall (PR) curves, and cost curves. These metrics were applied to the generalized power law detector for blue whale D calls [Helble, Ierley, D'Spain, Roch, and Hildebrand (2012). J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 131(4), 2682-2699] and the click-clustering neural-net algorithm for Cuvier's beaked whale echolocation click detection [Frasier, Roch, Soldevilla, Wiggins, Garrison, and Hildebrand (2017). PLoS Comp. Biol. 13(12), e1005823] using data prepared for the 2015 Detection, Classification, Localization and Density Estimation Workshop. Detection class imbalance, particularly the situation of rare occurrence, is common for long-term passive acoustic monitoring datasets and is a factor in the performance of ROC and DET curves with regard to the impact of false positive detections. PR curves overcome this shortcoming when calculated for individual detections and do not rely on the reporting of true negatives. Cost curves provide additional insight on the effective operating range for the detector based on the a priori probability of occurrence. Use of more than a single metric is helpful in understanding the performance of a detection algorithm.

Acoustofluidics is a burgeoning field that applies ultrasound to micro-scale to nano-scale fluidic systems. The discovery of the ability to effectively manipulate fluids and particles at small scales has yielded results that are superior to other approaches and has been built into a diverse range of research. Recasting the fundamentals of acoustics from the past to include new phenomena observed in recent years has allowed acoustical systems to impact new areas, such as drug delivery, diagnostics, and enhanced chemical processes. The contributions in this special issue address a diverse range of research topics in acoustofluidics. Topics include acoustic streaming, flows induced by bubbles, manipulation of particles using acoustic radiation forces, fluid and structural interactions, and contributions suggesting a natural limit to the particle velocity, the ability to deliver molecules to human immune T cells, and microdroplet generation via nozzle-based acoustic atomization.

Inspired by recent developments in data-driven methods for partial differential equation (PDE) estimation, we use sparse modeling techniques to automatically estimate PDEs from data. A dictionary consisting of hypothetical PDE terms is constructed using numerical differentiation. Given data, PDE terms are selected assuming a parsimonious representation, which is enforced using a sparsity constraint. Unlike previous PDE identification schemes, we make no assumptions about which PDE terms are responsible for a given field. The approach is demonstrated on synthetic and real video data, with physical phenomena governed by wave, Burgers, and Helmholtz equations. Small explosive charges, called seal bombs, used by commercial fisheries to deter marine mammals from depredation and accidental bycatch during fishing operations, produce high level sounds that may negatively impact nearby animals. Seal bombs were exploded underwater and recorded at various ranges with a calibrated hydrophone to characterize the pulse waveforms and to provide appropriate propagation loss models for source level (SL) estimates. Waveform refraction became important at about 1500 m slant range with approximately spherical spreading losses observed at shorter ranges. The SL for seal bombs was estimated to be 233 dB re 1 μPa m; however, for impulses such as explosions, better metrics integrate over the pulse duration, accounting for the total energy in the pulse, including source pressure impulse, estimated as 193 Pa m s, and sound exposure source level, estimated as 197 dB re 1 μPa2 m2 s over a 2 ms window. Accounting for the whole 100 ms waveform, including the bubble pulses and sea surface reflections, sound exposure source level was 203 dB re 1 μPa2 m2 s. Furthermore, integrating the energy over an entire event period of multiple explosions (i.e., cumulative sound exposure level) should be considered when evaluating impact.

Materials under vibration experience internal stress waves that can cause material failure or energy loss due to inelastic vibration. Traditionally, failure is defined in terms of material acceleration, yet this approach has many drawbacks, principally because it is not invariant with respect to scale, type of vibration, or material choice. Here, the likelihood of failure is instead considered in terms of the maximum vibration or particle velocity for various metals, polymers, and structural materials. The exact relationship between the maximum particle velocity and the maximum induced stress may be derived, but only if one knows the details of the vibration, material, flaws, and geometry. Statistical results with over thousands of individual trials are presented here to demonstrate a wide variety of vibrations across a sufficient variety of these choices. Failure in this context is defined as either fracture or plastic yield, the latter associated with inelastic deformation and energy loss during vibration. If the maximum permissible cyclical stress in material vibration is known, to at least an order of magnitude, the probability of this type of failure may be computed for a range of vibration velocities in each material. The results support the notion that a maximum particle velocity on the order of 1 m/s is a universal and critical limit that, upon exceeding, causes the probability of failure to become significant regardless of the details of the material, geometry, or vibration. We illustrate this in a specific example relevant to acoustofluidics, a simple surface acoustic wave device. The consequences of particle velocity limit analysis can effectively be used in materials and structural engineering to predict when dynamic material particle velocity can cause inelastic losses or failure via brittle fracture, plastic deformation, or fatigue failure.

Frequency modulation (FM) detection at low modulation frequencies is commonly used as an index of temporal fine-structure processing. The present study evaluated the rate of improvement in monaural and dichotic FM across a range of test parameters. In experiment I, dichotic and monaural FM detection was measured as a function of duration and modulator starting phase. Dichotic FM thresholds were lower than monaural FM thresholds and the modulator starting phase had no effect on detection. Experiment II measured monaural FM detection for signals that differed in modulation rate and duration such that the improvement with duration in seconds (carrier) or cycles (modulator) was compared. Monaural FM detection improved monotonically with the number of modulation cycles, suggesting that the modulator is extracted prior to detection. Experiment III measured dichotic FM detection for shorter signal durations to test the hypothesis that dichotic FM relies primarily on the signal onset. The rate of improvement decreased as duration increased, which is consistent with the use of primarily onset cues for the detection of dichotic FM. These results establish that improvement with duration occurs as a function of the modulation cycles at a rate consistent with the independent-samples model for monaural FM, but later cycles contribute less to detection in dichotic FM.

An empirical model for wind-generated underwater noise is presented that was developed using an extensive dataset of acoustic field recordings and a global wind model. These data encompass more than one hundred years of recording-time and capture high wind events, and were collected both on shallow continental shelves and in open ocean deep-water settings. The model aims to explicitly separate noise generated by wind-related sources from noise produced by anthropogenic sources. Two key wind-related sound-generating mechanisms considered are: surface wave and turbulence interactions, and bubble and bubble cloud oscillations. The model for wind-generated noise shows small frequency dependence (5 dB/decade) at low frequencies (10-100 Hz), and larger frequency dependence (∼15 dB/decade) at higher frequencies (400 Hz-20 kHz). The relationship between noise level and wind speed is linear for low wind speeds (15 m/s), noise levels begin to decrease at high frequencies (>10 kHz), likely due to interaction between bubbles and screening of noise radiation in the presence of high-density bubble clouds.

This work demonstrates the effectiveness of using humans in the loop processes for constructing large training sets for machine learning tasks. A corpus of over 57 000 toothed whale echolocation clicks was developed by using a permissive energy-based echolocation detector followed by a machine-assisted quality control process that exploits contextual cues. Subsets of these data were used to train feed forward neural networks that detected over 850 000 echolocation clicks that were validated using the same quality control process. It is shown that this network architecture performs well in a variety of contexts and is evaluated against a withheld data set that was collected nearly five years apart from the development data at a location over 600 km distant. The system was capable of finding echolocation bouts that were missed by human analysts, and the patterns of error in the classifier consist primarily of anthropogenic sources that were not included as counter-training examples. In the absence of such events, typical false positive rates are under ten events per hour even at low thresholds.

Foreign-accented speech commonly incurs a processing cost, but this cost can be offset when listeners are given informative cues to the speaker's purported ethnicity and/or language background. This study investigates the mechanism that underlies this facilitatory effect of top-down expectation, evaluating between general adaptation (an across-the-board relaxation of phonetic categorization criteria) and targeted adaptation (tuning in to accent-specific phonetics). In experiment 1, native speakers of American English completed a transcription-in-noise task with Chinese-accented English sentences. All listeners heard the same voice but were randomly assigned to one of four visual conditions: a blank silhouette, a European face, an East Asian face, or a South Asian face. Results showed that although there was no significant effect of visual condition, listeners who believed the speaker to be non-natively accented enjoyed significantly improved performance compared to those who reported hearing a native accent. Crucially, however, listeners who correctly perceived the speaker as Chinese-accented showed no additional benefit over those who heard some other foreign accent. This basic pattern held even when listeners were primed to expect congruent face-accent pairings (experiment 2). Overall, these results provide evidence for a general adaptation mechanism, rather than a targeted mechanism involving accent-specific phonetic adjustments.

In the clinic, many diagnostic and therapeutic procedures focus on the oscillation patterns of the vocal folds (VF). Dynamic characteristics of the VFs, such as symmetry, periodicity, and full glottal closure, are considered essential features for healthy phonation. However, the relevance of these individual factors in the complex interaction between the airflow, laryngeal structures, and the resulting acoustics has not yet been quantified. Sustained phonation was induced in nine excised porcine larynges without vocal tract (supraglottal structures had been removed above the ventricular folds). The multimodal setup was designed to simultaneously control and monitor key aspects of phonation in the three essential parts of the larynx. More specifically, measurements will comprise (1) the subglottal pressure signal, (2) high-speed recordings in the glottal plane, and (3) the acoustic signal in the supraglottal region. The automated setup regulates glottal airflow, asymmetric arytenoid adduction, and the pre-phonatory glottal gap. Statistical analysis revealed a beneficial influence of VF periodicity and glottal closure on the signal quality of the subglottal pressure and the supraglottal acoustics, whereas VF symmetry only had a negligible influence. Strong correlations were found between the subglottal and supraglottal signal quality, with significant improvement of the acoustic quality for high levels of periodicity and glottal closure.

Traditionally, real-time generation of spectro-temporally modulated noise has been performed on a linear amplitude scale, partially due to computational constraints. Experiments often require modulation that is sinusoidal on a logarithmic amplitude scale as a result of the many perceptual and physiological measures which scale linearly with exponential changes in the signal magnitude. A method is presented for computing exponential spectro-temporal modulation, showing that it can be expressed analytically as a sum over linearly offset sidebands with component amplitudes equal to the values of the modified Bessel function of the first kind. This approach greatly improves the efficiency and precision of stimulus generation over current methods, facilitating real-time generation for a broad range of carrier and envelope signals.

Control of speech formants is important for the production of distinguishable speech sounds and is achieved with both feedback and learned feedforward control. However, it is unclear whether the learning of feedforward control involves the mechanisms of feedback control. Speakers have been shown to compensate for unpredictable transient mid-utterance perturbations of pitch and loudness feedback, demonstrating online feedback control of these speech features. To determine whether similar feedback control mechanisms exist in the production of formants, responses to unpredictable vowel formant feedback perturbations were examined. Results showed similar within-trial compensatory responses to formant perturbations that were presented at utterance onset and mid-utterance. The relationship between online feedback compensation to unpredictable formant perturbations and sensorimotor adaptation to consistent formant perturbations was further examined. Within-trial online compensation responses were not correlated with across-trial sensorimotor adaptation. A detailed analysis of within-trial time course dynamics across trials during sensorimotor adaptation revealed that across-trial sensorimotor adaptation responses did not result from an incorporation of within-trial compensation response. These findings suggest that online feedback compensation and sensorimotor adaptation are governed by distinct neural mechanisms. These findings have important implications for models of speech motor control in terms of how feedback and feedforward control mechanisms are implemented.

No agreed-upon method currently exists for objective measurement of perceived voice quality. This paper describes validation of a psychoacoustic model designed to fill this gap. This model includes parameters to characterize the harmonic and inharmonic voice sources, vocal tract transfer function, fundamental frequency, and amplitude of the voice, which together serve to completely quantify the integral sound of a target voice sample. In experiment 1, 200 voices with and without diagnosed vocal pathology were fit with the model using analysis-by-synthesis. The resulting synthetic voice samples were not distinguishable from the original voice tokens, suggesting that the model has all the parameters it needs to fully quantify voice quality. In experiment 2 parameters that model the harmonic voice source were removed one by one, and the voice tokens were re-synthesized with the reduced model. In every case the lower-dimensional models provided worse perceptual matches to the quality of the natural tokens than did the original set, indicating that the psychoacoustic model cannot be reduced in dimensionality without loss of fit to the data. Results confirm that this model can be validly applied to quantify voice quality in clinical and research applications.

A hallmark feature of speech motor control is its ability to learn to anticipate and compensate for persistent feedback alterations, a process referred to as sensorimotor adaptation. Because this process involves adjusting articulation to counter the perceived effects of altering acoustic feedback, there are a number of factors that affect it, including the complex relationship between acoustics and articulation and non-uniformities of speech perception. As a consequence, sensorimotor adaptation is hypothesised to vary as a function of the direction of the applied auditory feedback alteration in vowel formant space. This hypothesis was tested in two experiments where auditory feedback was altered in real time, shifting the frequency values of the first and second formants (F1 and F2) of participants' speech. Shifts were designed on a subject-by-subject basis and sensorimotor adaptation was quantified with respect to the direction of applied shift, normalised for individual speakers. Adaptation was indeed found to depend on the direction of the applied shift in vowel formant space, independent of shift magnitude. These findings have implications for models of sensorimotor adaptation of speech.

This study aims to determine the degree to which Portable Automated Rapid Testing (PART), a freely available program running on a tablet computer, is capable of reproducing standard laboratory results. Undergraduate students were assigned to one of three within-subject conditions that examined repeatability of performance on a battery of psychoacoustical tests of temporal fine structure processing, spectro-temporal amplitude modulation, and targets in competition. The repeatability condition examined test/retest with the same system, the headphones condition examined the effects of varying headphones (passive and active noise-attenuating), and the noise condition examined repeatability in the presence of recorded cafeteria noise. In general, performance on the test battery showed high repeatability, even across manipulated conditions, and was similar to that reported in the literature. These data serve as validation that suprathreshold psychoacoustical tests can be made accessible to run on consumer-grade hardware and perform in less controlled settings. This dataset also provides a distribution of thresholds that can be used as a normative baseline against which auditory dysfunction can be identified in future work.

To examine difficulties experienced by cochlear implant (CI) users when perceiving non-native speech, intelligibility of non-native speech was compared in conditions with single and multiple alternating talkers. Compared to listeners with normal hearing, no rapid talker-dependent adaptation was observed and performance was approximately 40% lower for CI users following increased exposure in both talker conditions. Results suggest that lower performance for CI users may stem from combined effects of limited spectral resolution, which diminishes perceptible differences across accents, and limited access to talker-specific acoustic features of speech, which reduces the ability to adapt to non-native speech in a talker-dependent manner.

The goal of this study is to identify laryngeal strategies that minimize vocal fold contact pressure while producing a target sound pressure level (SPL) using a three-dimensional voice production model. The results show that while the subglottal pressure and transverse stiffness can be manipulated to reduce the peak contact pressure, such manipulations also reduce the SPL, and are thus less effective in reducing contact pressure in voice tasks targeting a specific SPL level. In contrast, changes in the initial glottal angle and vocal fold vertical thickness that reduce the contact pressure also increase the SPL. Thus, in voice tasks targeting a specific SPL, such changes in the initial glottal angle and vertical thickness also lower the subglottal pressure, which further reduces the peak contact pressure. Overall the results show that for voice tasks with a target SPL level, vocal fold contact pressure can be significantly reduced by adopting a barely abducted glottal configuration or reducing the vocal fold vertical thickness. Aerodynamic measures are effective in identifying voice production with large initial glottal angles, but by themselves alone are not useful in differentiating hyperadducted vocal folds from barely abducted vocal folds, which may be better differentiated by closed quotient and voice type measures.

A speech production experiment with electroglottography investigated how voicing is affected by consonants of differing degrees of constriction. Measures of glottal contact [closed quotient (CQ)] and strength of voicing [strength of excitation (SoE)] were used in conditional inference tree analyses. Broadly, the results show that as the degree of constriction increases, both CQ and SoE values decrease, indicating breathier and weaker voicing. Similar changes in voicing quality are observed throughout the course of the production of a given segment. Implications of these results for a greater understanding of source-tract interactions and for the phonological notion of sonority are discussed.

When classifying major versus minor tone-scrambles (random sequences of pure tones), most listeners (70%) perform at chance while the remaining listeners perform nearly perfectly. The current study investigated whether inserting rests and cyclic sequences into the stimuli could heighten sensitivity in such tasks. In separate blocks, listeners classified tone-scramble variants as major versus minor ("3" task) or fourth versus tritone ("4" task). In three "Fast" variants, tones were played at 65 ms/tone as a continuous, random stream ("FR"), or with a rest after every fourth tone ("FRwR"), or as a repeating sequence of four tones with a rest after every fourth tone ("FCwR"). In the "Slow" variant, tones were played at 325 ms/tone in random order. In both the 3 and 4 tasks, performance was ordered from best to worst as follows: FRwR > FR > FCwR > Slow. Post hoc analysis revealed that performance was suppressed in the Slow and FCwR task-variants due to a powerful bias inclining listeners to respond "major" or "fourth" ("minor" or "tritone") if the 4-note sequence defining the stimulus ended on a high (low) note. Overall, the results indicate that inserting regular rests into random tone sequences heightens sensitivity to musical mode.

The difference between major and minor scales plays a central role in Western music. However, recent research using random tone sequences ("tone-scrambles") has revealed a dramatically bimodal distribution in sensitivity to this difference: 30% of listeners are near perfect in classifying major versus minor tone-scrambles; the other 70% perform near chance. Here, whether or not infants show this same pattern is investigated. The anticipatory eye-movements of thirty 6-month-old infants were monitored during trials in which the infants heard a tone-scramble whose quality (major versus minor) signalled the location (right versus left) where a subsequent visual stimulus (the target) would appear. For 33% of infants, these anticipatory eye-movements predicted target location with near perfect accuracy; for the other 67%, the anticipatory eye-movements were unrelated to the target location. In conclusion, six-month-old infants show the same distribution as adults in sensitivity to the difference between major versus minor tone-scrambles.

The goal of this study is to estimate vocal fold geometry, stiffness, position, and subglottal pressure from voice acoustics, toward clinical and other voice technology applications. Unlike previous voice inversion research that often uses lumped-element models of phonation, this study explores the feasibility of voice inversion using data generated from a three-dimensional voice production model. Neural networks are trained to estimate vocal fold properties and subglottal pressure from voice features extracted from the simulation data. Results show reasonably good estimation accuracy, particularly for vocal fold properties with a consistent global effect on voice production, and reasonable agreement with excised human larynx experiment.

The goal of this study was to investigate how realistic changes in medial surface shape, as occur in human phonation, affect voice production. In a parametric magnetic resonance imaging-based three-dimensional vocal fold model, the superior and inferior portions of the medial surface were systematically manipulated to produce different medial surface contours similar to those observed in previous excised larynx and in vivo canine larynx experiments. Voice simulations were performed to investigate the differences in the resulting voice production. The results showed that both superior-medial bulging and inferior-medial bulging of the medial surface, which led to an increased vertical thickness and a more rectangular glottal configuration, increased the closed quotient of vocal fold vibration. Changes in medial surface shape also had significant effects on the phonation threshold pressure. The degree of these effects of changes in medial surface shape was larynx specific, and varied significantly depending on the vocal fold cross-sectional geometry and its variation along the anterior-posterior direction. The results suggest that, in addition to vocal fold approximation, surgical interventions of voice disorders should also aim at restoring a rectangular and sufficiently thick medial surface.

Speech produced by children is characterized by a high fundamental frequency which complicates measurement of vocal tract resonances, and hence coarticulation. Here two whole-spectrum measures of coarticulation are validated, one temporal and one spectral, that are less sensitive to these challenges. Using these measures, consonant-vowel coarticulation is calculated in the speech of a large sample of 4-year-old children. The measurements replicate known lingual coarticulatory findings from the literature, demonstrating the utility of these acoustic measures of coarticulation in speakers of all ages.

Clinical intervention of glottal insufficiency often focuses on correcting glottal gap as visualized from above. In contrast, changes in medial surface shape due to intervention have received less attention. This study investigated how changes in medial surface shape affect voice production in excised human larynges, by locally medializing the medial surface at different longitudinal and vertical locations. The results showed that localized medialization at a more inferior location yielded better improvement in glottal closure and higher-order harmonic excitation in the produced voice. This study shows that surgical intervention of glottal insufficiency should also aim at restoring desirable medial surface shape.

Gas vesicles (GVs) are remarkably stable nano-sized gas-filled protein shells proven effective in ultrasonic imaging. The many potential benefits of GVs arise from their strong gas equilibrium at a submicron size as produced by bacteria or algae, producing significant contrast in ultrasound imaging. The actual vibration behavior of GVs, including buckling and collapse, is poorly understood since the GVs are too small for observation methods of sufficient speed to produce details of the GV deformation during exposure to ultrasound. Traditional optical or acoustic microscopy methods are, in any case, not useful, and ex-situtransmission electron microscopy produces useful images but without sufficient time resolution. We propose to instead use laser Doppler vibrometry (LDV) to observe the vibration behavior of GVs. Employing interferometry, LDV offers a far better spatiotemporal resolution. While the typical GV is smaller than 1 μm, an agglomeration of GVs may be used with the LDV to produce a measurable displacement response from a controlled, acoustically delivered pressure. In this talk, we report the fundamental and first harmonic resonance frequencies of GVs and vibration to buckling and collapse at the clinically relevant frequency of 6.5 MHz. We also compare these results with predictions from classic theories of bubble and particle oscillations and finite difference-based computations.

Bickley (1982) proposed H1–H2 as an index of the stronger H1 observed for breathy vowels compared to modal ones. Because harmonic amplitudes also vary by overall sound pressure level (SPL), H1 amplitude was normalized to that of H2. Studies have also shown that H1–H2 is well perceived and correlates with glottal open quotient, and thus can be used to infer the articulations leading to changes in perceived quality. Yet in some cases, H1–H2 does not distinguish two voice qualities at statistically significant levels. We claim that this might be due not to the same open quotient between two voice qualities, but to the fact that H1–H2 can be especially noisy to estimate: for example, when f0 is irregular (as in creaky voice qualities), H1–H2 often has large variance that isn’t well modeled statistically. Using several corpora, we show that H1 alone (while controlling for SPL) allows for stronger statistical differentiation of voice categories than H1–H2. We further confirm that H1 can stand in place of H1–H2 as a correlate of glottal constriction. When differentiating voice qualities acoustically, researchers should consider measuring H1 (while controlling for differences in overall SPL) instead of, or in addition to, H1–H2.

The growth and survival of large-bodied marine predators depend on temporal synchrony with resource availability. Baleen whales migrating long distances must therefore respond to interannual variability to avoid a predator-prey mismatch. Highly migratory and acoustically active, blue whales are a model species for investigating the drivers and timing of migration. Using passive acoustic recordings collected from 2007 to 2017, we examined the relationship among migration timing (inferred from blue whale “D” and “B” calls), environmental indices, and measured krill abundance. Arrival to Southern California feeding grounds was correlated with sea surface temperatures (SST) on Costa Rica breeding grounds (r = 0.81,

Little is known about the nature or extent of everyday variability in voice quality. This paper describes a series of principal component analyses to explore within- and between-talker acoustic variation and the extent to which they conform to expectations derived from current models of voice perception. Based on studies of faces and cognitive models of speaker recognition, the authors hypothesized that a few measures would be important across speakers, but that much of within-speaker variability would be idiosyncratic. Analyses used multiple sentence productions from 50 female and 50 male speakers of English, recorded over three days. Twenty-six acoustic variables from a psychoacoustic model of voice quality were measured every 5 ms on vowels and approximants. Across speakers the balance between higher harmonic amplitudes and inharmonic energy in the voice accounted for the most variance (females = 20%, males = 22%). Formant frequencies and their variability accounted for an additional 12% of variance across speakers. Remaining variance appeared largely idiosyncratic, suggesting that the speaker-specific voice space is different for different people. Results further showed that voice spaces for individuals and for the population of talkers have very similar acoustic structures. Implications for prototype models of voice perception and recognition are discussed.

While it has been recognized that a large amplitude incident wave upon a dry fracture can exhibit nonlinear seismic wave scattering due to its stress-dependent mechanical compliance, the impact of pore fluid in the fracture and a fluid-filled poroelastic background medium-features common for fractures in the Earth-are not well understood. As a first step toward an understanding of the nonlinear poroelastic response of elastic waves in fractured media, analytical approximate formulas are used for the amplitude and phase of a normally incident plane wave using a perturbation method, assuming a fluid-filled, highly compliant nonlinear interface embedded in a linear poroelastic solid. The stress-closure behavior of the fracture is modeled by nonlinear, poroelastic displacement-discontinuity boundary conditions (a linear-slip interface). The theory predicts that the static ("Direct current," or DC) and higher-order-harmonic waves produced by the nonlinear scattering can be greatly reduced by the presence of fluid in the fracture. This, however, depends upon a number of parameters, including fracture compliance, fluid properties (compressibility and viscosity), and the permeability of the background medium, as well as environmental parameters such as the initial fluid pressure and stress acting on the fracture. The static effect produces low-frequency fluid pressure pulses when a finite-duration wave is incident upon the fracture-behavior unique to fluid-filled fractures within a poroelastic medium.

With results from a nationwide survey sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, factors that affect outdoor audibility and noise annoyance of wind turbines were evaluated. Wind turbine and summer daytime median background sound levels were estimated for 1043 respondents. Wind turbine sound level was the most robust predictor of audibility yet only a weak, albeit significant, predictor of noise annoyance. For each 1 dB increase in wind turbine sound level (L1h-max), the odds of hearing a wind turbine on one's property increased by 31% [odds ratio (OR): 1.31; 95% CI (confidence interval): 1.25-1.38] and the odds of moving to the next level of annoyance increased by 9% (OR: 1.09; 95% CI: 1.02-1.16). While audibility was overwhelmingly dependent on turbine sound level, noise annoyance was best explained by visual disapproval (OR: 11.0; 95% CI: 4.8-25.4). The final models correctly predict audibility and annoyance level for 80% and 62% of individuals, respectively. The results demonstrate that among community members not receiving personal benefits from wind projects, the Community Tolerance Level of wind turbine noise for the U.S. aligns with the international average, further supporting observations that communities are less tolerant of wind turbine noise than other common environmental noise sources at equivalent A-weighted sound levels.

The goal of this study is to identify vocal fold geometric and mechanical conditions that are likely to produce large contact pressure and thus high risk of vocal fold injury. Using a three-dimensional computational model of phonation, parametric simulations are performed with co-variations in vocal fold geometry and stiffness, with and without a vocal tract. For each simulation, the peak contact pressure is calculated. The results show that the subglottal pressure and the transverse stiffness of the vocal folds in the coronal plane have the largest and most consistent effect on the peak contact pressure, indicating the importance of maintaining a balance between the subglottal pressure and transverse stiffness to avoiding vocal fold injury. The presence of a vocal tract generally increases the peak contact pressure, particularly for an open-mouth vocal tract configuration. While a low degree of vocal fold approximation significantly reduces vocal fold contact pressure, for conditions of moderate and tight vocal fold approximation changes in vocal fold approximation may increase or decrease the peak contact pressure. The effects of the medial surface thickness and vocal fold stiffness along the anterior-posterior direction are similarly inconsistent and vary depending on other control parameters and the vocal tract configuration.
