Lipophile induced modulations of self-assembly characteristics in aqueous Pluronic systems merit attention because of wide-ranging uses of Pluronics as solubilizing agents of lipophilic substances. In this paper, we report unusual evolutions of structural and hydration properties in lavender essential oil (LO) solubilized Pluronic P85 aqueous micellar systems as a function of micellar volume fraction and temperature. Our DLS, SANS, and viscometry studies show that the spherical-to-wormlike micellar structural transition observed in 1% P85 solutions upon solubilization of LO quite unexpectedly gets suppressed with increased P85 concentration to ≥5%. Detailed SANS studies reveal that the core sizes of the oil solubilized micelles cannot attain the threshold value required for the onset of structural transition at higher copolymer concentrations due to their progressive shrinking with an increase in P85 concentration. Oil solubilized P85 solutions show two cloud points and very interestingly exhibit micellar growth upon cooling to their lower cloud points. Steady state fluorescence studies explain this based on increasing dehydration of micellar corona with a decrease in temperature, very much opposite to what is observed in pure aqueous Pluronic systems. The results give new insight into viscous flow properties and low temperature storage possibilities of oil solubilized aqueous Pluronic systems.

The structure of core-shell micelles formed by nonionic surfactant Triton X-100 (TX-100) in a supercooled glucose-urea melt is investigated by contrast variation small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), small angle neutron scattering (SANS), and HR-TEM. Cooling a molten mixture of glucose-urea (weight ratio of 3:2) to room temperature yields a supercooled solvent without crystallization that can be used for trapping micelles of TX-100. By use of a combination of water and glucose-urea mixture at different proportions as solvent for micellization, the scattering length density (SLD) of the solvent can be tuned to match the shell contrast of the micelles. A systematic analysis of SAXS and SANS data with different SLD of solvent permits a quantitative evaluation of electron density profile of micelles in different matrices. The core of TX-100 micelles shows significant swelling in glucose-urea melt, as compared to that in water. The dimension and morphology of micelles were evaluated by scattering techniques and HR-TEM. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) studies suggest that, unlike micelles in water, the diffusion of micelles in supercooled glucose-urea melt decreased by several orders of magnitude.

Micellization behavior of oppositely charged gemini surfactants (anionic surfactant; phosphoric acid, P,P'-1,4-butanedieyl, P,P'-didodecylester, disodium salt (12-4-12A), and cationic surfactant; butanediyl-1,4, bis (N,N-hexadecyl ammonium) dibromide (16-4-16) or (D-isosorbate-1,4-diyl bis(N,N-dimethyl-N-hexadecylammonium acetoxy) dichloride (16-Isb-16)) has been studied (individually or of a gemini mixture) by conductivity and surface tension measurements. Critical micelle concentration (CMC) data show both synergistic (for 12-4-12A + 16-Isb-16) and antagonistic (for 12-4-12A + 16-4-16) interactions between the two components. Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurement shows formation of various aggregates, spherical (or ellipsoidal), rod-shaped, and vesicular, by changing the mole fraction (at fixed total surfactant concentration, 10 mM). Viscosity, zeta (ζ)-potential, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) data are found in conformity of SANS results. Surprisingly, two morphologies (vesicles and rod-shaped micelles) show stability in a wide temperature range (303-343 K). The behavior has been explained on the basis of temperature induced dehydration and depletion of micellar charge. Aqueous gemini mixtures, of different morphologies, have been used for the determination of solubilization efficacy (using UV-visible spectrophotometer) toward polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs: anthracene; pyrene or fluorene). Molar solubilization ratio (MSR) data suggest that vesicles enhance the solubilization efficacy. SANS analysis shows that vesicle bilayer thickness increases upon PAH solubilization. The order of bilayer thickness increase is found to be anthracenepyrenefluorene, which is in the same order as the aqueous solubility of PAHs. This is the first report which correlates morphology to the solubilization efficacy.

Herein, we report the comparative study of gels and complex coacervates of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and beta-lactoglobulin (β-Lg) with gelatin close to their common pI. Surface patch binding produced a range of new soft matter phases (interpolymer complexes) such as opaque coacervates (charge neutralized complexes) and transparent gels (overcharged complexes). We emphasize on the comparative study of the microstructure of coacervates and gels formed at different mixing ratios using small angle scattering (SANS) data. It was found that phase states were entirely defined by the mixing ratio r = [GB]:[β-Lg or BSA]. Thermo-viscoelastic profiles of aforesaid samples revealed a smaller storage modulus and lower melting temperature for coacervates compared to gels. Thermally activated samples generated additional phases that were also probed by SANS and rheology. Thus, it is established that intermolecular association between globular proteins and a random coil polypeptide can generate various soft matter states that may facilitate harvesting of novel biomaterials.

The triblock Pluronic F127 was modified by introducing poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) at both the poly(ethylene oxide) ends, and the pentablock copolymer so-prepared was characterized by gel permeation chromatography and (1)H NMR. The degree of polymerization of NIPAM blocks at the two ends was 7. The solution behavior and microstructure of copolymer aggregates in water and aqueous salt solution were examined and compared with F127 by UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, microdifferential scanning calorimetry, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The behavior of the pentablock copolymer at the air/water interface was determined by Langmuir film balance. Two lower critical solution temperatures were observed for pentablock copolymer, corresponding to poly(propylene oxide) and PNIPAM blocks, respectively. DLS studies show that micelle size increased with increase in temperature and in the presence of salt. SANS measurements provided temperature-dependent structural evolution of copolymer micelles in water and salt solution. The copolymer displays an isotherm with four classical regions (pancake, mushroom, brush, and condensed state). The study has potential applications in controlled drug delivery due to the tunable phase behavior and biocompatibility of the copolymer.

The effect of successive alkylation of the Cα atom adjacent to the carbonyl group in N,N-dialkyl amides (i.e., di(2-ethylhexyl)acetamide (D2EHAA), di(2-ethylhexyl)propionamide (D2EHPRA), di(2-ethylhexyl)isobutyramide (D2EHIBA), and di(2-ethylhexyl)pivalamide (D2EHPVA)) on the extraction behavior of hexavalent uranium (U(VI)) and tetravalent thorium (Th(IV)) ions has been investigated. These studies show that the extraction of Th(IV) is significantly suppressed compared to that of U(VI) with increased branching at the Cα atom adjacent to the carbonyl group. Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) studies showed an increased aggregation tendency in the presence of nitric acid and metal ions. D2EHAA showed more aggregation compared to its branched homologues, which explains its capacity for higher extraction of metal ions. These experimental observations were further supported by density function theory calculations, which provided structural evidence of differential binding affinities of these extractants for uranyl cations. The complexation process is primarily controlled by steric and electronic effects. Quantum chemical calculations showed that local hardness and polarizability can be extremely useful inputs for designing novel extractants relevant to a nuclear fuel cycle.

We report interaction between bovine serum albumin ([BSA] = 1% (w/v)) and gelatin B ([GB] = 0.25-3.5% (w/v)) occurring close to their common isoelectric pH (pI). This interaction generated distinguishable multiple soft matter phases like opaque coacervates (phase I) and transparent gels (phase II), where the former are composed of partially charge neutralized intermolecular complexes (zeta potential, ζ ≤ 0) and the latter of overcharged complexes (ζ ≥ 0) that organized into a network pervading the entire sample volume. These phase states were completely governed by the protein mixing ratio r = [GB]:[BSA]. Coacervates, when heated above 32 °C, produced thermoirreversible turbid gels (phase III), stable in the region 32 ≥ T ≤ 50 °C. When the transparent gels were heated to T ≥ 34 °C, these turned into turbid solutions that did form a turbid fragile gel (phase IV) upon cooling. Mechanical and thermal behaviors of aforesaid coacervates (phase I) and gels (phase II) were examined; coacervates had lower storage modulus and melting temperature compared to gels. Cole-Cole plots attributed considerable heterogeneity to coacervate phase, but gels were relatively homogeneous. Raman spectroscopy data suggested differential microenvironment for these phases. Coacervates were mostly hydrated by partially structured water with degree of hydration dependent on gelatin concentration whereas for gels hydration was invariant of [GB]. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) data gave static structure factor profiles, I(q), versus wavevector q, that were remarkably different. For transparent gels, data could be split into two distinct regions: (i) 0.01q0.1 Å(-1), I(q) = IOZ(0)/(1 + q(2)ζgel(2))(2) (Debye-Bueche function) with ζgel = 9-13 nm, and (ii) 0.1q0.35 Å(-1), I(q) = IOZ(0)/(1 + q(2)ξgel(2)) (Ornstein-Zernike function) with ξgel = 3.1 ± 0.6 nm. Similarly, for coacervate, the aforesaid two q-regions were described by (i) I(q) = IPL(0)q(-α) with α = 1.7 ± 0.1 and (ii) I(q) = IOZ(0)/(1 + q(2)ξcoac(2)) with ξcoac = 1.6 ± 0.2 nm, a value close to the persistence length of gelatin chain (lp ≈ 2 nm). Phase transition from one equilibrium state to another, i.e., phase I to II, was hierarchical in the charge state of the protein-protein complex. Within the same charge state, transition from phase I to III and from phase II to IV was thermally activated. The aforesaid mechanisms are captured in a unique ζ-T phase diagram.

Sodium dicarboxylates (or Bola salts) with methylene spacers 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 were studied in aqueous solution to investigate their influence on the micellization of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). Since bolas with spacer length ≤12 are known not to micellize in general, the herein used sodium dicarboxylates were treated as 2:1 amphiphilic electrolytes which reduced surface tension of water (except sodium oxalate with zero spacer) without self-association. Their concentration dependent conductance was also linear without breaks. The bolas affected the micellization of CTAB but acted like salts to decrease its CMC. Their combinations did not form bilayer aggregates as found in vesicles. Nevertheless, they synergistically interacted with CTAB at the air/water interface as revealed from Rosen's thermodynamic model. Hydrodynamic radius (Rh), Zeta-potential (ζ), and electrical double layer behavior of bola interacted CTAB micelles were assessed. From SANS measurements, micelle shape, shape parameters, aggregation number (Nagg), surface charge of the bola influenced CTAB micelles were also determined. NMR study as well supported the non-mixing of bolas with the CTAB micelles. They interacted in solution like "amphiphilic electrolytes" to influence the surface and micelle forming properties of CTAB.

Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) studies were carried out to compare the aggregation behavior of 1.1 M solutions of tributyl phosphate (TBP) and N,N-dihexyl octanamide (DHOA) dissolved in different deuterated diluents, viz., n-dodecane, chloroform, and benzene, during the extraction of Th(IV) from nitric acid medium. The scattering data was treated using the Baxter sticky spheres model. The third phase formed in the case of DHOA displayed higher aggregation tendency compared to that of TBP. These studies have demonstrated that the nature of the diluents plays an important role in the aggregation behavior of the extracted species (reverse micelles). No third phase was observed in the case of chlorinated and aromatic diluents like chloroform and benzene during the extraction of Th(IV) from nitric acid medium. Theoretical calculations were also performed to gain insights into the binding of thorium nitrate with TBP and DHOA models. These calculations suggest that two to three molecules of both DHOA and TBP strongly coordinate to Th(NO3)4. It is noted that the highly charged Th(IV) cations are screened by nitrates and extractants which enables the interaction of second unit of such complex through noncovalent interactions.

The influence of methyl paraben (MP) and butyl paraben (BP) on the aggregation characteristics of Pluronics in an aqueous medium has been investigated by DLS, SANS, viscometry, and fluorescence measurement techniques. Parabens are extensively used as preservatives in cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and food products. In this paper, we show that their influence on the restructuring and growth of Pluronics micelles vary quite significantly with their aqueous solubility and with the composition of Pluronics. In the case of P105 and P104, MP reduces the sphere-to-rod transition temperature down to room temperature, but BP with significantly less aqueous solubility than MP suppresses such micellar transition and leads to the formation of micellar clusters due to the onset of intermicellar attractive interaction. In the case of more hydrophobic Pluronic P103, on the other hand, both MP and BP are able to induce rapid room temperature sphere-to-rod micellar growth, which is not observed in the presence of water structure making salts like NaCl and Na(3)PO(4). These observations have been attributed to modulation of growth and restructuring processes of the Pluronic micelles arising due to different locations of parabens within the micellar corona as determined by their aqueous solubility and the hydrophobicity of the Pluronics.

Study of kinetics of complex coacervation occurring in aqueous 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ionic liquid solution of low charge density polypeptide (gelatin A) and 200 base pair DNA, and thermally activated coacervate into anisotropic gel transition, is reported here. Associative interaction between DNA and gelatin A (GA) having charge ratio (DNA:GA = 16:1) and persistence length ratio (5:1) was studied at fixed DNA (0.005% (w/v)) and varying GA concentration (C(GA) = 0-0.25% (w/v)). The interaction profile was found to be strongly hierarchical and revealed three distinct binding regions: (i) Region I showed DNA-condensation (primary binding) for C(GA)0.10% (w/v), the DNA ζ potential decrease from -80 to -5 mV (95%) (partial charge neutralization), and a size decrease by ≈60%. (ii) Region II (0.10C(GA)0.15% (w/v)) indicated secondary binding, a 4-fold turbidity increase, a ζ potential decrease from -5 to 0 mV (complete charge neutralization), which resulted in the appearance of soluble complexes and initiation of coacervation. (iii) Region III (0.15C(GA)0.25% (w/v)) revealed growth of insoluble complexes followed by precipitation. The hydration of coacervate was found to be protein concentration specific in Raman studies. The binding profile of DNA-GA complex with IL concentration revealed optimum IL concentration (=0.05% (w/v)) was required to maximize the interactions. Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) data of coacervates gave static structure factor profiles, I(q) versus wave vector q, that were remarkably similar and invariant of protein concentration. This data could be split into two distinct regions: (i) for 0.0173q0.0353 Å(-1), I(q) ~ q(-α) with α = 1.35-1.67, and (ii) for 0.0353q0.35 Å(-1), I(q) = I(0)/(1 + q(2)ξ(2)). The correlation length found was ξ = 2 ± 0.1 nm independent of protein concentration. The viscoelastic length (≈8 nm) was found to have value close to the persistence length of the protein (≈10 nm). Rheology data indicated that the coacervate phase resided close to the gelation state of the protein. Thus, on a heating-cooling cycle (heating to 50 °C followed by cooling to 20 °C), the heterogeneous coacervate exhibited an irreversible first-order phase transition to an anisotropic ion gel. This established a coacervate-ion gel phase diagram having a well-defined UCST.

The influence of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) on the aggregation characteristics of the Tetronic 904 (T904) has been studied in the aqueous medium by dynamic light scattering (DLS), small angle neutron scattering (SANS), and viscometry methods. This polyethylene oxide (PEO)-polypropylene oxide (PPO) based X-shaped triblock copolymer shows pH sensitive aggregation characteristics due to the presence of a central amine group attached with the PPO block. The aqueous micellar solutions of this copolymer have been found to show a large increase in the room temperature (30 °C) relative viscosity with an increase in NaOH concentration, before they undergo phase separation at 1.25 M NaOH concentration. SANS and DLS studies ascribe this behavior to a sphere to rod growth of the copolymer micelles on approaching the cloud points of the copolymer solutions. DLS studies show that the observed micellar growth is accompanied by critical scattering due to the onset of an attractive intermicellar interaction. To understand the role of NaOH in inducing the observed micellar shape transition, we have also studied the effect of NaOH on the micellar solutions of Pluronic P84, which does not show pH sensitivity due to the absence of the central amine group but has the same weight fraction of the PEO block (40%) as that of T904. Quite interestingly, the P84 micelles too have been found to undergo a similar room temperature sphere to rod shape transition in the presence of NaOH. The observed growth and interaction of the Tetronic micelles have thus been attributed to the dual effects of NaOH in influencing the aggregation characteristics of the Tetronic molecules. On one hand, it stabilizes these micelles by the deprotonation of the copolymer molecules, and on the other hand, its dehydrating effect on the copolymer molecules promotes the onset of micellar growth and intermicellar attractive interaction at the room temperature. The observed results are the first of their kind in the aqueous Tetronic system.

The objective of the present investigation is to develop and characterize anionic mixed micelles of two biocompatible surfactants, Tween 80 (T-80) and sodium deoxycholate (NaDC), and evaluate their potential in the delivery of doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX), a cationic anticancer drug. The mixed micelles were characterized for their microstructure, intermicellar interactions, and doxorubicin binding ability by dynamic light scattering, small angle neutron scattering (SANS), viscosity, and optical absorption measurements. Salt-induced growth of the mixed micelles at different compositions suggests that both electrostatic interaction of the anionic bile salts and steric repulsion of the ethylene oxide groups in nonionic components are affected by the presence of electrolytes. Addition of bile salt molecules to T-80 micelles suppresses the salt-induced growth of nonionic T-80 micelles. SANS studies indicate that bile salt micelles are prolate ellipsoidal in shape, and the addition of T-80 transforms them toward a spherical shape. The anionic bile salt can successfully bind to the cationic drug doxorubicin. The in vitro cytotoxicity studies in various cancer cell lines revealed that DOX-loaded micelles have greater in vitro anticancer activity as compared to DOX solution, indicating their potential in pharmaceutical applications.

We report the step by step self-assembly from nanostructure to microstructure (bottom-up approach through X-ray diffraction (1.6 nm), small angle neutron scattering (SANS) (11.6 nm), atomic force microscopy (70 nm smaller crystallite from enlarged image and 450 nm greater crystallites), and polarizing optical microscope (2 microm)) of aliphatic polyurethanes (PU) in contrast to aromatic polyurethanes depending on hard segment content (HSC). Polyurethanes of 10 to 80% HSC have been synthesized by using appropriate amount of polyol and chain extender. The effect of self-assembled patterns on mechanical properties both in solid and liquid state has been established exhibiting structure-property relationship of supramolecular polyurethanes. The crystallinity enhances but the degradation temperature decreases with increasing HSC. The characteristic length (measure of gap between lamellar crystallites), as revealed from SANS, gradually decreases with increasing HSC suggesting compactness of the crystallites through extensive hydrogen bonding. The Young's modulus increases with increasing HSC with a percolation threshold of hard segment (50%) while the toughness improves up to 30% HSC followed by gradual decrease in presence of bigger crystallites which promote brittle fracture. The origin of self-assembly in aliphatic PUs has been demonstrated through electronic structure calculations to form a loop structure with minimum intermolecular distance (2.2 A) while that distance is quite large in aromatic polyurethanes (4.6 A) that cannot form hydrogen bonds. The unique splintering of domain structure and its subsequent reformation under dynamic shear experiment has been established.

The thermoreversible gelation of poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoro propylene) copolymer have been studied in a series of phthalates, Ph-(COO C(n)H(2n+1))(2) with n = 1-8. The gelation rate increases with increasing aliphatic chain length up to n = 6, and the gelation phenomena does not occur for higher n > 6. The fibrillar morphology is evident for dried gels whose dimension (both lateral and thickness) becomes shorter and thinner with increasing n. The structures of the gels formed in various phthalates have been investigated by small-angle neutron scattering and small-angle X-ray scattering techniques, suggesting sheet-like structure, where the interplanner distance increases with increasing aliphatic chain length. The scattering intensity I(q) decreases with q according to the Ornstein-Zernike model, where q = (4pi/lambda) sin theta (2theta and lambda are scattering angle and wavelength of neutron) and the correlation length, xi, assigned to the average distance between the neighboring crystallites, also increases with increasing aliphatic chain length of diesters. The detailed thermal analyses and phase diagrams of the copolymer gels have been studied in a wide range of phthalates. Further, polymer-solvent complexes leading to the formation of two distinct compounds have been reported. A systematic change of compound composition has also been observed in the whole range of phthalates studied here. On the basis of electronic structure calculation, a model has been proposed to elucidate the conformation of copolymer chain in presence of various phthalates and their complexes, which offer the cause of higher gelation rate for longer aliphatic chain length up to n = 6, no gelation phenomena occurs for n > 6, and formation of two copolymer-solvent compounds. The mechanical properties (storage modulus and viscosity) decrease with increasing aliphatic chain length of phthalates and realignment of fibrils occurs at particular frequency depending on the strength of fibrillar gels.

The sphere-to-rod growth behavior of the triblock copolymer EO(20)PO(70)EO(20) (P123) micelles has been studied in an aqueous medium by dynamic light scattering (DLS), viscometry, and small angle neutron scattering (SANS) techniques. Unlike the other aqueous pluronic systems, the P123 solutions show a time dependent sphere-to-rod micellar growth in the aqueous medium on approaching their cloud points. The rate of micellar growth increases with increase in temperature, but quite interestingly, it improves rather dramatically when the copolymer solutions are subjected to heat cycling, i.e., heating them to the phase separation and subsequently cooling them back to below their cloud points. The observed kinetically restricted micellar growth has been attributed to the slow dynamics of the micellar restructuring processes essential to arrive at the temperature dependent equilibrium structure. It has been suggested that the improvement in the micellar growth rate upon heat cycling is due to overcoming of the activation energy associated with the micellar restructuring process. In the presence of water-structure-making salts like NaCl, such heat cycling produces kinetically stable wormlike micelles at room temperature, which is observed for the first time in the aqueous pluronic systems.

The structure and the properties of the (Ethylene Oxide)(13)(Propylene Oxide)(30)(Ethylene Oxide)(13) (Pluronic L64, MW approximately 2900) micelles have been studied in the aqueous medium by small angle neutron scattering (SANS), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and viscometry measurements. The aqueous solutions of this triblock copolymer are unique among the pluronic solutions in showing critical concentration fluctuations and a concomitant enhancement in viscosity on approaching their cloud point. So far these results have been attributed solely to the presence of attractive interaction between the spherical L64 micelles. Recent theoretical studies, on the other hand, suggest that L64 micelles prefer a prolate ellipsoidal structure to sphere (Bedrov et al. Langmuir 2007, 23, 12032) and have a predominantly repulsive intermicellar interaction. A comparative analysis of our SANS data based on the spherical and prolate ellipsoidal structure shows that the L64 micelles can be best described by a prolate ellipsoidal structure, the aspect ratios of which increase progressively with increase in temperature. This, together with our viscosity and DLS studies, suggests that the enhanced viscosity of the copolymer solution near the cloud point arises largely due to the anisotropic growth of the micelles to the worm-like structures. The role of the intermicellar attractive interaction has thus been limited to the observed critical concentration fluctuation, and its effect decreases progressively with increase in copolymer concentration. It has also been shown that the water structure making salts like NaCl reduces the micellar growth temperature and helps in forming worm-like micelles at the room temperature. These studies thus identify the effect of micellar growth and interaction in determining the properties of the copolymer solution near the cloud point, which are the first of its kind in the case of the pluronics.

The formation of selective surface patch binding induced complex coacervates between polyions, chitosan (cationic polyelectrolyte), and alkali-processed gelatin (polyampholyte), both carrying similar net charge, was investigated for two volumetric mixing ratios: r = [chitosan]/[gelatin] = 1:5 and 1:10. Formation of soluble intermolecular complexes between gelatin and chitosan molecules was observed in a narrow range of pH, though these biopolymers had the same kind of net charge, which was evidenced from electrophoretic measurement. This clearly established the role played by selective surface patch binding driven interactions. The temperature sweep measurements conducted on these coacervate samples through rheology and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies yielded two characteristic melting temperatures located at approximately 68 +/- 3 degrees C and 82 +/- 3 degrees C. In the flow mode, the shear viscosity (eta) of the coacervate samples was found to scale with (power-law model) applied shear rate (gamma*) as eta(gamma*) approximately (gamma*)(-k); this yielded k = 0.76 +/- 0.2 (1 s(-1)gamma*100 s(-1)), indicating non-Newtonian behavior. The static structure factor (I(q)) deduced from small angle neutron scattering (SANS) data in the low q (q is the scattering wavevector) (0.018 A(-1)q0.072 A(-1)) region was fitted to the Debye-Bueche regime, I(q) approximately 1/(1 + zeta(2)q(2))2 that yielded a size of zeta approximately 215 +/- 20 A (for r = 1:10) and zeta approximately 260 +/- 20 A (for r = 1:5) samples, implying change in the size of inhomogeneities present with mixing ratio. In the intermediate q region, called the Ornstein-Zernike regime, I(q) approximately 1/(1 + xi(2)q(2)) gave a correlation length of xi approximately 10.0 +/- 2.0 A independent of the mixing ratio. The results taken together imply the existence of a weakly interconnected and heterogeneous network structure inside the coacervate phase separated by domains of polymer-poor regions.

Dynamic light scattering (DLS), small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), and viscosity studies have been carried out to examine the influence of NaCl and ethanol on the structure of triblock copolymer [(EO)20(PO)70(EO)20] (EO = ethylene oxide; PO = propylene oxide) micelles in aqueous medium. The studies show that while the pure triblock copolymer solutions do not show any significant growth of the micelles on approaching the cloud point, the presence of a small amount of ethanol (5-10%) induces a sphere to rod shape transition of micelles at high temperatures. Interestingly, this ethanol induced sphere to rod transition of micelles can be brought down to room temperature (25 degrees C) with the addition of NaCl. It is also found that NaCl alone cannot induce such sphere to rod transitions and excess ethanol suppresses them by increasing their transition temperature.

Novel single-chain cationic surfactants bearing one, two, and three pyridinium headgroups have been synthesized. These surfactants upon solubilization in water produced micelles or large lamellar structures depending on the number of headgroups they possess. The critical micellar concentrations (cmc) of these surfactants were determined by measuring the specific conductance of the aqueous solution of the surfactants. The cmc values were found to increase with every increase in the number of headgroups in the surfactant. Detailed small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) studies were carried out with their aqueous solutions (D2O) to study their aggregation properties. Small-angle neutron scattering experiments have been carried out on aqueous micellar solutions of cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTABr) in the presence of different aromatic salts. The salts with different hydrophilicity of the counterions that have been used are sodium benzoate (NaB), sodium 2-hydroxy benzoate (Na2-HB), sodium 2,6-dihydroxy benzoate (Na2,6-DHB), and sodium 4-hydroxy benzoate (Na4-HB). It is found that cationic CTABr micelles grow strongly with the addition of small amount of NaB, Na2-HB, and Na2,6-DHB salts. The effect of addition of salts on the growth of the micelles is significantly higher for Na2-HB and Na2,6-DHB as compared to that for NaB. On the other hand, the addition of salt Na4-HB is relatively much less effective similar to the effect of inorganic salts (e.g., NaBr) on the growth of the micelles. The aqueous solutions of two nonionic silicone surfactants based on polyether modified poly(dimethylsiloxane)s have been analyzed by cloud point, surface tension, small angle neutron scattering (SANS), and viscosity measurements. These surfactants have a comb-like structure with a linear poly(dimethylsiloxane) backbone chain and a grid containing block oligomers of ethylene oxide and/or propylene oxide as branches. The critical micelle concentrations (CMCs) were obtained from break points in surface tension vs log concentration plots and, as expected, decreased systematically with the increase in the hydrophobicity. Micellar solutions of a highly hydrophilic ethylene oxide−propylene oxide triblock copolymer, pluronic F88 (EO103PO39EO103), in aqueous solution are examined by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) at different concentrations and temperatures and in the presence of different salts. At temperature less than 30 °C, F88 solution in water (5 wt %) showed unimers which are fully dissolved Gaussian chains. The unimer-to-micelle transition takes place when the temperature or concentration is increased. Added neutral salt favors micellization of the copolymer at lower concentration/temperature. At temperature close to ambient, block copolymer forms micelles that consist of a central core, presumably dominated by the propylene oxide blocks, surrounded by a corona of highly hydrated ethylene oxide subchains. Three new gemini surfactants containing mono-, di-, and trioxyethylene spacer chains have been synthesized. Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) cross sections from the micellar aggregates of these dimeric amphiphiles Br-, n-C16H33NMe2+-CH2(CH2OCH2)(p)CH2-N+Me2-n-C16H33,Br-, (where p = 1, 2, and 3) in aqueous media (D2O) have been measured. The data have been analyzed using the Hayter and Penfold model for macro-ion solution to compute the interparticle structure factor S(Q) taking into account the screened Coulomb interactions between the dimeric micelles. The SANS analysis showed that the micellar morphology depends on both the nature and the length of the spacer unit. Detailed analysis of the data further indicates that the introduction of oxyethylene spacer is not sufficient enough to prevent looping of the spacer chain. Thus the average separation between the dimethylammonium ion headgroups is considerably lower than is expected from a fully extended conformation of the spacer chain. The micelles from these surfactants have also been characterized in terms of their critical micelle concentrations (cmc), microviscosities, and micropolarities on the basis of the information provided by micelle-solubilized fluorescent probes. These results indicate little difference in their micellar properties such as cmc, microviscosity, and micropolarity.

Measurements of small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) cross sections from different mixed micelles composed of CTAB and Br-, n-C16H33N+Me2−(CH2)mN+Me2−n-C16H33, Br- (16-m-16, 2Br-, where m = 3, 5, and 10), in aqueous media (D2O) are reported. The data have been analyzed using the Hayter and Penfold model for macroion solution to compute the interparticle structure factor S(Q) taking into account the screened Coulomb interactions between the micelles. The aggregate composition matches with that predicted from an ideal mixing model. The SANS analysis further indicates that the extent of aggregate growth and the variations of shapes of the mixed micelles could be modulated by the amount of dimeric surfactant present in these mixtures. With the spacer chain length m ≤ 4 in the dimeric surfactant, the propensity of micellar growth is particularly pronounced.
