Applications of inorganic scintillators—activated with lanthanide dopants, such as Ce and Eu—are found in diverse fields. As a strict requirement to exhibit scintillation, the 4f ground state (with the electronic configuration of [Xe]4fn 5d0) and 5d1 lowest excited state (with the electronic configuration of [Xe]4fn−1 5d1) levels induced by the activator must lie within the host bandgap. Here we introduce a new machine learning (ML) based search strategy for high-throughput chemical space explorations to discover and design novel inorganic scintillators. Building upon well-known physics-based chemical trends for the host dependent electron binding energies within the 4f and 5d1 energy levels of lanthanide ions and available experimental data, the developed ML model—coupled with knowledge of the vacuum referred valence and conduction band edges computed from first principles—can rapidly and reliably estimate the relative positions of the activator’s energy levels relative to the valence and conduction band edges of any given host chemistry. Using perovskite oxides and elpasolite halides as examples, the presented approach has been demonstrated to be able to (i) capture systematic chemical trends across host chemistries and (ii) effectively screen promising compounds in a high-throughput manner. While a number of other application-specific performance requirements need to be considered for a viable scintillator, the scheme developed here can be a practically useful tool to systematically down-select the most promising candidate materials in a first line of screening for a subsequent in-depth investigation.

Parallel replica dynamics simulation methods appropriate for the simulation of chemical reactions in molecular systems with many conformational degrees of freedom have been developed and applied to study the microsecond-scale pyrolysis of n-hexadecane in the temperature range of 2100-2500 K. The algorithm uses a transition detection scheme that is based on molecular topology, rather than energetic basins. This algorithm allows efficient parallelization of small systems even when using more processors than particles (in contrast to more traditional parallelization algorithms), and even when there are frequent conformational transitions (in contrast to previous implementations of the parallel replica algorithm). The parallel efficiency for pyrolysis initiation reactions was over 90% on 61 processors for this 50-atom system. The parallel replica dynamics technique results in reaction probabilities that are statistically indistinguishable from those obtained from direct molecular dynamics, under conditions where both are feasible, but allows simulations at temperatures as much as 1000 K lower than direct molecular dynamics simulations. The rate of initiation displayed Arrhenius behavior over the entire temperature range, with an activation energy and frequency factor of E(a) = 79.7 kcal/mol and log A/s(-1) = 14.8, respectively, in reasonable agreement with experiment and empirical kinetic models. Several interesting unimolecular reaction mechanisms were observed in simulations of the chain propagation reactions above 2000 K, which are not included in most coarse-grained kinetic models. More studies are needed in order to determine whether these mechanisms are experimentally relevant, or specific to the potential energy surface used.

Due to reduced dimensions and increased interfacial content, nanocomposite oxides offer improved functionalities in a wide variety of advanced technological applications, including their potential use as radiation tolerant materials. To better understand the role of interface structures in influencing the radiation damage tolerance of oxides, we have conducted atomistic calculations to elucidate the behavior of radiation-induced point defects (vacancies and interstitials) at interface steps in a model CeO2/SrTiO3 system. We find that atomic-scale steps at the interface have substantial influence on the defect behavior, which ultimately dictate the material performance in hostile irradiation environments. Distinctive steps react dissimilarly to cation and anion defects, effectively becoming biased sinks for different types of defects. Steps also attract cation interstitials, leaving behind an excess of immobile vacancies. Further, defects introduce significant structural and chemical distortions primarily at the steps. These two factors are plausible origins for the enhanced amorphization at steps seen in our recent experiments. The present work indicates that comprehensive examination of the interaction of radiation-induced point defects with the atomic-scale topology and defect structure of heterointerfaces is essential to evaluate the radiation tolerance of nanocomposites. Finally, our results have implications for other applications, such as fast ion conduction.

A modification of the nudged elastic band method for finding minimum energy paths is presented. One of the images is made to climb up along the elastic band to converge rigorously on the highest saddle point. Also, variable spring constants are used to increase the density of images near the top of the energy barrier to get an improved estimate of the reaction coordinate near the saddle point. We have developed a new method for finding and representing dividing surfaces which can, for example, be used to identify “atoms” in molecules or condensed phases based on Bader’s definition. Given the total electron density of the system, the dividing surface is taken to be the zero-flux surface, i.e., the surface on which the normal component of the gradient vanishes. Our method for finding this surface involves creating an “elastic sheet” represented by a swarm of fictitious particles which interact with each other so as to give a nearly uniform distribution of points on the sheet. Two kinds of forces act on the particles: (1) the component of the gradient of the density normal to the elastic sheet, and (2) an interparticle force which only acts in the local tangent plane of the sheet. Starting with a spherical surface and applying an optimization algorithm that minimizes the forces leads to convergence of the particles to the zero-flux surface. The elastic sheet tends to round off regions where the zero-flux surface has sharp cusps or points, but this appears not to be a serious problem in cases we have studied. The elastic sheet method is robust and can converge in situations where currently used methods fail. We demonstrate the method with a study of water clusters and a Si interstitial in a Si crystal.

Using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and nudged elastic band calculations we examine the finite temperature stability, transition pathways, and migration mechanisms of large oxygen clusters in UO(2+x). Here we specifically consider the recently proposed split quad-interstitial and cuboctahedral oxygen clusters. It is shown that isolated cuboctahedral clusters may transform into more stable configurations that are closely linked to the split quad-interstitial. The split quad-interstitial is stable with respect to single interstitials occupying the empty octahedral holes of the UO(2) lattice. In order to better understand discrepancies between theory and experiments, the simulated atomic pair distribution functions for the split quad-interstitial structures are analyzed with respect to the distribution function for U(4)O(9) previously obtained from neutron diffraction data. Our nudged elastic band calculations suggest that the split quad-interstitial may migrate by translating one of its constituent di-interstitial clusters via a barrier that is lower than the corresponding barrier for individual interstitials, but higher than the barrier for the most stable di-interstitial cluster.

For two methods commonly used to achieve canonical-ensemble sampling in a molecular-dynamics simulation, the Langevin thermostat and the Andersen [H. C. Andersen, J. Chem. Phys. 72, 2384 (1980)] thermostat, we observe, as have others, synchronization of initially independent trajectories in the same potential basin when the same random number sequence is employed. For the first time, we derive the time dependence of this synchronization for a harmonic well and show that the rate of synchronization is proportional to the thermostat coupling strength at weak coupling and inversely proportional at strong coupling with a peak in between. Explanations for the synchronization and the coupling dependence are given for both thermostats. Observation of the effect for a realistic 97-atom system indicates that this phenomenon is quite general. We discuss some of the implications of this effect and propose that it can be exploited to develop new simulation techniques. We give three examples: efficient thermalization (a concept which was also noted by Fahy and Hamann [S. Fahy and D. R. Hamann, Phys. Rev. Lett. 69, 761 (1992)]), time-parallelization of a trajectory in an infrequent-event system, and detecting transitions in an infrequent-event system.
