Abstract

A model system expressing cytoplasmically truncated, functionally inactive TGF-beta type II receptor in transgenic mice was used to analyze the influence of TGF-beta signaling on normal differentiation and maintenance of chondrocytes in vivo. Results have shown that the loss of responsiveness to TGF-beta suppressed the feedback loop and promoted terminal differentiation of chondrocytes resulting in osteoarthritis.
