We report SOFIA/GREAT observations of high-J CO lines and [C ii] observations of the super star cluster candidate H72.97-69.39 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), which is in its very early formation stage. We use our observations to determine if shocks are heating the gas or if photon-dominated regions (PDRs) are being heated by local far-UV radiation. We use a PDR model and a shock model to determine whether the CO and [C ii] lines arise from PDRs or shocks. We can reproduce the observed high-J CO and [C ii] emission with a clumpy PDR model with the following properties: a density of 104.7 cm−3, a mass of 104 M ⊙, and UV radiation of 103.5 in units of Draine field. Comparison with the ALMA beam-filling factor suggests a higher density within the uncertainty of the fit. We find the lower-limit [C ii]/total infrared (TIR) ratio (ϵ) traced by [C ii]/TIR to be 0.026%, lower than other known young star-forming regions in the LMC. Our shock models may explain the CO (16−15) and CO (11−10) emission lines with shock velocity of 8–11 km s−1, pre-shock density of 104–105 cm−3, and G UV = 0 in units of Draine field. However, the [C ii] line emission cannot be explained by a shock model, thus it is originating in a different gas component. Observations of [O i] 63 μm predicted to be 1.1 × 10−13 W m−2 by PDR models and 7.8 × 10−15 W m−2 by shock models will help distinguish between the PDR and shock scenarios.

We combine variability information from the MAssive Compact Halo Objects (MACHO) survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) with infrared photometry from the Spitzer Space Telescope Surveying the Agents of a Galaxy's Evolution (SAGE) survey to create a dataset of ~30 000 variable red sources. We photometrically classify these sources as being on the first ascent of the Red Giant Branch (RGB), or as being in one of three stages along the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB): oxygen-rich, carbon-rich, or highly reddened with indeterminate chemistry ("extreme" AGB candidates). We present linear period-luminosity relationships for these sources using 8 separate infrared bands (J, H, K, 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, 8.0, and 24 micron) as proxies for the luminosity. We find that the wavelength dependence of the slope of the period-luminosity relationship is different for different photometrically determined classes of AGB stars. Stars photometrically classified as O-rich show the least variation of slope with wavelength, while dust enshrouded extreme AGB stars show a pronounced trend toward steeper slopes with increasing wavelength. We find that O-rich AGB stars pulsating in the fundamental mode obey a period-magnitude relation with a slope of -3.41 +/- 0.04 when magnitude is measured in the 3.6 micron band, in contrast to C-rich AGB stars, which obey a relation of slope -3.77 +/- 0.05.

International audience; The H II complex N 159 in the Large Magellanic Cloud is used to study massive star formation in different environments, as it contains three giant molecular clouds (GMCs) that have similar sizes and masses but exhibit different intensities of star formation. We identify candidate massive young stellar objects (YSOs) using infrared photometry, and model their spectral energy distributions to constrain mass and evolutionary state. Good fits are obtained for less evolved Type I, I/II, and II sources. Our analysis suggests that there are massive embedded YSOs in N 159B, a maser source, and several ultracompact H II regions. Massive O-type YSOs are found in GMCs N 159-E and N 159-W, which are associated with ionized gas, i.e., where massive stars formed a few Myr ago. The third GMC, N 159-S, has neither O-type YSOs nor evidence of previous massive star formation. This correlation between current and antecedent formation of massive stars suggests that energy feedback is relevant. We present evidence that N 159-W is forming YSOs spontaneously, while collapse in N 159-E may be triggered. Finally, we compare star formation rates determined from YSO counts with those from integrated Halpha and 24 mum luminosities and expected from gas surface densities. Detailed dissection of extragalactic GMCs like the one presented here is key to revealing the physics underlying commonly used star formation scaling laws.

We present analysis of the energetic star-forming region Henize 206 (N206) located near the southern edge of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) based on photometric data from the Spitzer Surveying the Agents of Galaxy Evolution (SAGE-LMC; IRAC 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, 8.0 μm and MIPS 24 μm), Infrared Survey Facility near-infrared survey (J, H, K s ), and the Magellanic Clouds Photometric Survey (MCPS UBVI) covering a wavelength range of 0.36-24 μm. Young stellar object (YSO) candidates are identified based upon their location in infrared color-magnitude space and classified by the shapes of their spectral energy distributions in comparison with a pre-computed grid of YSO models. We identify 116 YSO candidates: 102 are well characterized by the YSO models, predominately Stage I, and 14 may be multiple sources or young sources with transition disks. Careful examination of the individual sources and their surrounding environment allows us to identify a factor of ~14.5 more YSO candidates than have already been identified. The total mass of these well-fit YSO candidates is ~520 M ☉. We calculate a current star formation rate of 0.27 × 10–1 M ☉ yr–1 kpc–2. The distribution of YSO candidates appears to follow shells of neutral material in the interstellar medium.

We model multi-wavelength broadband UBVIJHKs and Spitzer IRAC and MIPS photometry and IRS spectra from the SAGE and SAGE-Spec observing programs of two oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch (O-rich AGB) stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using radiative transfer models of dust shells around stars. We chose a star from each of the bright and faint O-rich AGB populations found by earlier studies of the SAGE sample in order to derive a baseline set of dust properties to be used in the construction of an extensive grid of radiative transfer models of the O-rich AGB stars found in the SAGE surveys. From the bright O-rich AGB population we chose HV 5715, and from the faint O-rich AGB population we chose SSTISAGE1C J052206.92-715017.6 (SSTSAGE052206). We found the complex indices of refraction of oxygen-deficient silicates from Ossenkopf et al (1992) and a "KMH"-like grain size distribution with gamma of -3.5, a_min of 0.01 microns, and a_0 of 0.1 microns to be reasonable dust properties for these models. There is a slight indication that the dust around the faint O-rich AGB may be more silica-rich than that around the bright O-rich AGB. Simple models of gas emission suggest a relatively extended gas envelope for the faint O-rich AGB star modeled, consistent with the relatively large dust shell inner radius for the same model. The models compute the dust mass-loss rates for the two stars to be 2.0x10^-9 M_Sun/yr and 2.3x10^-9 M_Sun/yr, respectively. When a dust-to-gas mass ratio of 0.002 is assumed for SSTSAGE052206 and HV 5715, the dust mass-loss rates imply total mass-loss rates of 1.0x10^-6 M_Sun/yr and 1.2x10^-6 M_Sun/yr, respectively. These properties of the dust shells and stars, as inferred from our models of the two stars, are found to be consistent with properties observed or assumed by detailed studies of other O-rich AGB stars in the LMC and elsewhere., 37 pages, 3 figures, appeared in the 10 June 2010 issue of the Astrophysical Journal

SN 2007od exhibits characteristics that have rarely been seen in a Type IIP supernova (SN). Optical V band photometry reveals a very steep brightness decline between the plateau and nebular phases of ~4.5 mag, likely due to SN 2007od containing a low mass of 56Ni. The optical spectra show an evolution from normal Type IIP with broad Halpha emission, to a complex, four component Halpha emission profile exhibiting asymmetries caused by dust extinction after day 232. This is similar to the spectral evolution of the Type IIn SN 1998S, although no early-time narrow (~200 km s-1) Halpha component was present in SN 2007od. In both SNe, the intermediate-width Halpha emission components are thought to arise in the interaction between the ejecta and its circumstellar medium (CSM). SN 2007od also shows a mid-IR excess due to new dust. The evolution of the Halpha profile and the presence of the mid-IR excess provide strong evidence that SN 2007od formed new dust before day 232. Late-time observations reveal a flattening of the visible lightcurve. This flattening is a strong indication of the presence of a light echo, which likely accounts for much of the broad, underlying Halpha component seen at late-times. We believe the multi-peaked Halpha emission is consistent with the interaction of the ejecta with a circumstellar ring or torus (for the inner components at \pm1500 km s-1), and a single blob or cloud of circumstellar material out of the plane of the CSM ring (for the outer component at -5000 km s-1). The most probable location for the formation of new dust is in the cool dense shell created by the interaction between the expanding ejecta and its CSM. Monte Carlo radiative transfer modeling of the dust emission from SN 2007od implies that up to 4x 10-4Msun of new dust has formed. This is similar to the amounts of dust formed in other CCSNe such as SNe 1999em, 2004et, and 2006jc.

In late 2003, the young eruptive variable star V1647 Orionis optically brightened by over 5 magnitudes, stayed bright for around 26 months, and then decline to its pre-outburst level. In August 2008 the star was reported to have unexpectedly brightened yet again and we herein present the first detailed observations of this new outburst. Photometrically, the star is now as bright as it ever was following the 2003 eruption. Spectroscopically, a pronounced P Cygni profile is again seen in Halpha with an absorption trough extending to -700 km/s. In the near-infrared, the spectrum now possesses very weak CO overtone bandhead absorption in contrast to the strong bandhead emission seen soon after the 2003 event. The Tail region of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) was imaged using the MIPS instrument on the Spitzer Space Telescope as part of the SAGE-SMC Spitzer Legacy. Diffuse infrared emission from dust was detected in all the MIPS bands. The Tail gas-to-dust ratio was measured to be 1200 +/- 350 using the MIPS observations combined with existing IRAS and HI observations. This gas-to-dust ratio is higher than the expected 500-800 from the known Tail metallicity indicating possible destruction of dust grains. Two cluster regions in the Tail were resolved into multiple sources in the MIPS observations and local gas-to-dust ratios were measured to be ~440 and ~250 suggests dust formation and/or significant amounts of ionized gas in these regions. The results from a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) snapshot survey of post-AGB objects are shown. The aim of the survey is to complement existing HST images of PPN and to connect various types of nebulosities with physical and chemical properties of their central stars. Nebulosities are detected in 15 of 33 sources. Images and photometric and geometric measurements are presented. For sources with nebulosities we see a morphological bifurcation into two groups, DUPLEX and SOLE, as previous studies have found. We find further support to the previous results suggesting that this dichotomy is caused by a difference in optical thickness of the dust shell. The remaining 18 sources are classified as stellar post-AGB objects, because our observations indicate a lack of nebulosity. We show that some stellar sources may in fact be DUPLEX or SOLE based on their infrared colors. The cause of the differences among the groups are investigated. We discuss some evidence suggesting that high progenitor-mass AGB stars tend to become DUPLEX post-AGB objects. Intermediate progenitor-mass AGB stars tend to be SOLE post-AGB objects. Most of the stellar sources probably have low mass progenitors and do not seem to develop nebulosities during the post-AGB phase and therefore do not become planetary nebulae.

NGC 602 is a young stellar cluster located in a peripheral region of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) known as the wing. Far from the main body of the galaxy and abutting the Magellanic Bridge, the SMC's wing is characterized by low gas and stellar content. With deep optical imaging from the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), we have discovered an extensive pre-main-sequence (PMS) population, with stellar masses in the range 0.6-3 M☉. These low-mass PMS stars formed coevally with the central cluster about 4 Myr ago. Spitzer IRAC images of the same region also reveal a population of young stellar objects, some of which are still embedded in nebular material and most of which likely formed even more recently than the young stars detected with HST ACS imaging. We infer that star formation started in this region ~ 4 Myr ago with the formation of the central cluster and gradually propagated toward the outskirts where star formation is presently ongoing.

We present the results of proper-motion measurements of the dust shell structure in the Egg Nebula (AFGL 2688, CRL 2688, V1610 Cyg), based on the archived two-epoch imaging-polarimetry data in the 2 micron band taken with NICMOS on-board the Hubble Space Telescope. We measured the amount of motions of local structures in the nebula by determining their relative shifts over an interval of 5.5 years. The dynamical age of the nebula is found to be roughly 350 years based on the overall motion of the nebula that exhibits a Hubble-law-esque linear relation between the measured proper motion and the projected radial distance from the origin of the expansion. By adopting the de-projected velocity of 45 km/s at the tips of the bipolar lobes, our proper-motion measurements indicate that the distance to the Egg Nebula is about 420 pc and that the lobes are inclined at 7.7 degrees with respect to the plane of the sky. The refined distance estimate yields the luminosity of the central star of 3.3 x 10^3 L_sun, the total shell mass of 1.2 M_sun, and the mass loss rate (the upper limit) of 3.6 x 10^(-3) M_sun/yr. Assuming 0.6 M_sun central post-AGB stellar mass, the initial mass of the Egg is 1.8 M_sun. We report the discovery of a rich population of low mass stars in the young, massive star forming region N66/NGC346 in the Small Magellanic Cloud, from deep V, I and H alpha images taken with the HST/ACS. These stars have likely formed together with the NGC346 cluster, ~3-5 Myr ago. Their magnitude and colors are those of pre-main sequence stars in the mass range 0.6-3 Mo, mostly concentrated in the main cluster, but with secondary subclusters spread over a region across ~45 pc. These subclusters appear to be spatially coincident with previously known knots of molecular gas identified in ground based and ISO observations. We show that N66/NGC346 is a complex region, being shaped by its massive stars, and the observations presented here represent a key step towards the understanding of how star formation occurred and has progressed in this low metallicity environment.

We present millimeter interferometry images of the CO J=1-0 line emission arising in the circumstellar envelope of HD 56126 (a.k.a. IRAS 07134+1005), which is one of the best studied 21-micron proto-planetary nebulae (PPNs). The CO emission extends from 1.2" to 7" in radius from the central star and appears consistent with a simple expanding envelope, as expected for a post-AGB star. We quantitatively model the molecular envelope using a radiative transfer code that we have modified for detached shells. Our best fit model reveals that two sequential winds created the circumstellar envelope of HD 56126: an AGB wind that lasted 6500 years with a mass-loss rate of 5.1x10^{-6} M_odot yr^{-1} and a more intense superwind that lasted 840 years with a mass-loss rate of 3x10^{-5} M_odot yr^{-1} and that ended the star's life on the AGB 1240 years ago. The total mass of this envelope is 0.059 M_odot which indicates a lower limit progenitor mass for the system of 0.66 M_odot, quite reasonable for this low-metallicity star which probably resides in the thick disk of the Galaxy. Comparison with images of the dust emission reveal a similar structure with the gas in the inner regions. Using 2-DUST, we model the dust emission of this source so that the model is consistent with the CO emission model and find an average gas-to-dust mass ratio of 75., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in 10/2004 issue of ApJ

We present a 2.218 lm image from the Hubble Space Telescope/Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS) and a 55 lm image from ISOPHOT of the dust ring surrounding the luminous blue variable (LBV) candidate HD 168625, together with new temperature and optical depth maps derived from mid-IR images. The shell is detached from the star in the near-IR, and substructure in the overall toroidal shell is visible. The far-IR image constrains the extent of the dust shell to 25 00 in diameter, providing an upper radius limit for modeling. The temperature maps and the NICMOS image show evidence for very small transiently heated dust grains in the shell. The opacity maps show higher optical depth in the limbs, consistent with interpretation of the dust shell as an equatorially enhanced torus inclined 60 with respect to the observer. An overall trend in the dust emission location with wavelength is observed and interpreted as a variation with respect to location in the nebula of either the dust grain size distribution or gas-to-dust mass ratio. Radiative transfer calculations using 2-Dust indicate that a mass-loss event occurred 5700 yr ago with a rate of ﷿1:9 0:1fi 10 4 M yr 1 , creating a dust torus that currently has a V 0:22 in the equatorial planeandadustmassof﷿2:5 0:1fi 10 3 M .Usingpublishedvaluesfor the gas mass, we indagas-to-dust mass ratio of 840, which is 4 times higher than current estimates for the interstellar medium. In addition to a high equator-to-poledensityratio ( 31) torus,anelliptical midshell isneededtoreproducethe appearanceand spectral energy distribution of the dust. Therefore, HD 168625 is an excellent example of proposed models of LBV nebulae in which a stellar wind interacts with a preexisting density contrast and creates a blowout in the polar direction perpendicular to the equatorial ring. The circumstellar shell is much lower in mass than that of LBV Carinae,suggestingthatHD168625hadalowermassprogenitor. We present JHK$_{s}$ observations of the metal-poor ([Fe/H] $10^{-11}$ $M_\odot \,{\rm yr}^{-1}$, confirming that metal-poor stars can form substantial amounts of dust. We also find tentative evidence for oxygen-rich dust formation at low metallicity, contradicting previous models that suggest oxygen-rich dust production is inhibited in metal-poor environments. The total rates of dust injection into the interstellar medium of Leo A and Sextans A are (8.2 $\pm$ 1.8) $\times 10^{-9}$ $M_\odot \,{\rm yr}^{-1}$ and (6.2 $\pm$ 0.2) $\times 10^{-7}$ $M_\odot \,{\rm yr}^{-1}$, respectively. We report the first extragalactic detection of the complex organic molecules (COMs) dimethyl ether (CH$_3$OCH$_3$) and methyl formate (CH$_3$OCHO) with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). These COMs together with their parent species methanol (CH$_3$OH), were detected toward two 1.3 mm continuum sources in the N 113 star-forming region in the low-metallicity Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Rotational temperatures ($T_{\rm rot}\sim130$ K) and total column densities ($N_{\rm rot}\sim10^{16}$ cm$^{-2}$) have been calculated for each source based on multiple transitions of CH$_3$OH. We present the ALMA molecular emission maps for COMs and measured abundances for all detected species. The physical and chemical properties of two sources with COMs detection, and the association with H$_2$O and OH maser emission indicate that they are hot cores. The fractional abundances of COMs scaled by a factor of 2.5 to account for the lower metallicity in the LMC are comparable to those found at the lower end of the range in Galactic hot cores. We present 12CO J = 1 → 0 maps of the extended envelope of IRC +10216 made by combining BIMA millimeter array and NRAO 12 m telescope observations. CO emission was detected beyond the radius of 140'', which traces the history of mass loss for the past ~7000 yr. We discover superposed on the CO envelope clumpy arcs of enhanced emission, circumscribing the star, at multiple radii ranging from about 26'' to 120''. The arcs are found to be coherent across a range of velocities, thus forming sections of multiple shells that are participating in the circumstellar expansion. The intershell timescales range from 1300 to 2900 yr, which are roughly consistent with simulations where wind modulations from a single thermal pulse event can lead to the formation of multiple shells. The multiple enhanced shells within the continuous envelope of IRC +10216 may be the high mass-loss rate counterpart to the detached shells detected around several low mass-loss rate carbon stars, such as TT Cyg.
