This is an Open Access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/), which permits unrestricted reuse, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited., We present the first very long baseline interferometric (VLBI) observations of the blazar OJ 287 carried out jointly with the Global Millimeter VLBI Array (GMVA) and the phased Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at 3.5 mm on 2017 April 2. The participation of phased ALMA has not only improved the GMVA north–south resolution by a factor of ∼3, but has also enabled fringe detections with signal-to-noise ratios up to 300 at baselines longer than 2 Gλ. The high sensitivity has motivated us to image the data with newly developed regularized maximum likelihood imaging methods, revealing the innermost jet structure with unprecedentedly high angular resolution. Our images reveal a compact and twisted jet extending along the northwest direction, with two bends within the inner 200 μas, resembling a precessing jet in projection. The component at the southeastern end shows a compact morphology and high brightness temperature, and is identified as the VLBI core. An extended jet feature that lies at ∼200 μas northwest of the core shows a conical shape, in both total and linearly polarized intensity, and a bimodal distribution of the linear polarization electric vector position angle. We discuss the nature of this feature by comparing our observations with models and simulations of oblique and recollimation shocks with various magnetic field configurations. Our high-fidelity images also enabled us to search for possible jet features from the secondary supermassive black hole (SMBH) and test the SMBH binary hypothesis proposed for this source. © 2022. Young and magnetically active low-mass stars often exhibit non-thermal coronal radio emission due to the gyration of electrons in their magnetized chromospheres. This emission is easily detectable at centimeter wavelengths with the current sensitivity of large radio interferometers like the VLA. With the aim of identifying nearby stars adequate for future accurate radio astrometric monitoring using Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), we have used the VLA in its B\, configuration to search for radio emission at \mbox{$\nu \simeq 6$\,GHz} \mbox{($\lambda \simeq 5$\,cm)} toward a sample of 170 nearby ($5000$\,K. The binarity fraction among the radio-bright stars is at least twice as high as among the radio-quiet stars. The radio-bright nearby young stars identified here provide an interesting sample for future astrometric studies using VLBI arrays aimed at searching for hitherto unknown tight binary components or even exoplanets., Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures plus electronic figures with 31 figures, 3 tables, accepted by ApJ

The Galactic Center black hole Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) is a prime observing target for the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), which can resolve the 1.3 mm emission from this source on angular scales comparable to that of the general relativistic shadow. Previous EHT observations have used visibility amplitudes to infer the morphology of the millimeter-wavelength emission. Potentially much richer source information is contained in the phases. We report on 1.3 mm phase information on Sgr A* obtained with the EHT on a total of 13 observing nights over 4 years. Closure phases, the sum of visibility phases along a closed triangle of interferometer baselines, are used because they are robust against phase corruptions introduced by instrumentation and the rapidly variable atmosphere. The median closure phase on a triangle including telescopes in California, Hawaii, and Arizona is nonzero. This result conclusively demonstrates that the millimeter emission is asymmetric on scales of a few Schwarzschild radii and can be used to break 180-degree rotational ambiguities inherent from amplitude data alone. The stability of the sign of the closure phase over most observing nights indicates persistent asymmetry in the image of Sgr A* that is not obscured by refraction due to interstellar electrons along the line of sight., Comment: 11 pages, accepted to ApJ

The infrared source known as Orion n was detected in 1980 with observations made with the 3.8-m United Kingdom Infrared Telescope. About two decades later, sensitive observations made with the Very Large Array revealed the presence of a mJy double radio source apparently coincident in position with the infrared source n. The radio source was assumed to be the counterpart of the infrared source. However, over the years it has been concluded that the radio source shows large proper motions to the south while the infrared source n is stationary. Here we reanalyze the proper motions of the radio source adding both older and newer VLA observations than previously used. We confirm the proper motions of the radio source that at present no longer coincides positionally with the infrared source. The solution to this problem is, most probably, that the infrared source n and the radio source are not the same object: the infrared source is a stationary object in the region while the radio counterpart is moving as a result of the explosion that took place in this region some 500 years ago and that expelled large amounts of molecular gas as well as several compact sources. Considering the paper where it was first reported, we refer to this double radio source as Orion MR. In addition, we use these new observations to fully confirm the large proper motions of the sources IRc23 and Zapata 11. Together with sources BN, I, Orion MR, and x, there are at least six compact sources that recede from a point in common in Orion BN/KL. However, IRc23 is peculiar in that its ejection age appears to be only $\sim$300 years. The relatively large number of sources rules out as a possible mechanism the classic three-body scenario since then only two escaping bodies are expected: a tight binary plus the third star involved in the encounter., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, to appear in The Astrophysical Journal

We present multi-epoch continuum observations of the Class 0 protostellar system IRAS 16293-2422 taken with the Very Large Array (VLA) at multiple wavelengths between 7 mm and 15 cm (41 GHz down to 2 GHz), as well as single-epoch Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) continuum observations covering the range from 0.4 to 1.3 mm (700 GHz down to 230 GHz). The new VLA observations confirm that source A2 is a protostar driving episodic mass ejections, and reveal the complex relative motion between A2 and A1. The spectrum of component B can be described by a single power law ($S_\nu \propto \nu^{2.28}$) over the entire range from 3 to 700 GHz (10 cm down to 0.4 mm), suggesting that the emission is entirely dominated by dust even at $\lambda$ = 10 cm. Finally, the size of source B appears to increase with frequency up to 41 GHz, remaining roughly constant (at $0''.39$ $\equiv$ 55 AU) at higher frequencies. We interpret this as evidence that source B is a dusty structure of finite size that becomes increasingly optically thick at higher frequencies until, in the millimeter regime, the source becomes entirely optically thick. The lack of excess free-free emission at long wavelengths, combined with the absence of high-velocity molecular emission indicates that source B does not drive a powerful outflow, and might indicate that source B is at a particularly early stage of its evolution.

We have used the greatly enhanced spectral capabilities of the Expanded Very Large Array to observe both the 22.3 GHz continuum emission and the H66{\alpha} recombination line toward the well-studied Galactic emission-line star MWC 349A. The continuum flux density is found to be 411 $\pm$ 41 mJy in good agreement with previous determinations. The H66{\alpha} line peak intensity is about 25 mJy, and the average line-to-continuum flux ratio is about 5%, as expected for local thermodynamic equilibrium conditions. This shows that the H66{\alpha} recombination line is not strongly masing as had previously been suggested, although a moderate maser contribution could be present. The He66{\alpha} recombination line is also detected in our observations; the relative strengths of the two recombination lines yield an ionized helium to ionized hydrogen abundance ratio y+ = 0.12 $\pm$ 0.02. The ionized helium appears to share the kinematics of the thermally excited ionized hydrogen gas, so the two species are likely to be well mixed. The electron temperature of the ionized gas in MWC 349A deduced from our observations is 6,300 $\pm$ 600 K., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

We present and analyze two new high-resolution (approx 0.3 arcsec), high-sensitivity (approx 50 uJy beam-1) Very Large Array 3.6 cm observations of IRAS 16293-2422 obtained in 2007 August and 2008 December. The components A2alpha and A2beta recently detected in this system are still present, and have moved roughly symmetrically away from source A2 at a projected velocity of 30-80 km s-1. This confirms that A2alpha and A2beta were formed as a consequence of a very recent bipolar ejection from A2. Powerful bipolar ejections have long been known to occur in low-mass young stars, but this is -to our knowledge-- the first time that such a dramatic one is observed from its very beginning. Under the reasonable assumption that the flux detected at radio wavelengths is optically thin free-free emission, one can estimate the mass of each ejecta to be of the order of 10^-8 Msun. If the ejecta were created as a consequence of an episode of enhanced mass loss accompanied by an increase in accretion onto the protostar, then the total luminosity of IRAS 16293-2422 ought to have increased by 10-60% over the course of at least several months. Between A2alpha and A2beta, component A2 has reappeared, and the relative position angle between A2 and A1 is found to have increased significantly since 2003-2005. This strongly suggests that A1 is a protostar rather than a shock feature, and that the A1/A2 pair is a tight binary system. At centimeter wavelengths, the young stellar system T Tauri is known to be composed of two sources, the northern one associated with the optical star T Tau itself, and the southern one related to the infrared companion T Tau S. Here wereexaminetheoriginoftheradioemissionfromthesetwocomponentsusingarchival2cm,3.6cm,and6cmVLA observations. The emission from the northern member is confirmed to be largely dominated by free-free radiation from an ionized wind, while the southern radio source is confirmed to consist of a compact component of magnetic origin, surrounded by an extended halo. Only moderately variable, the extended structure associated with the southern source is most likely the result of free-free radiation related to stellar winds. However, its flat spectral energy distribution,its extent,andthelackofvariationof itssizewiththefrequencyofobservationareincompatiblewiththe classical picture of a fully ionized wind with constant velocity and mass-loss rate leading to an electron density distribution of ne(r) / r � 2 . Instead, we propose a model in which the ionization results from the impact of a supersonic wind driven by T Tau Sb onto dense surrounding material, possibly associated with the circumbinary disk recently identified around the T Tau Sa/T Tau Sb pair. The timescales for cooling and recombination in such a situation are in good agreement with the observed morphological changes undergone by the extended structure as its driving source moves through the environment. We present absolute astrometry of 35 radio sources in the Orion Trapezium and Becklin-Neugebauer/Kleinman-Low regions, obtained from Very Large Array archival observations collected over a period of 15 years. By averaging the results for all the sources, we estimate the mean absolute proper motion of Orion to be --in Galactic coordinates-- $\mu_\ell \cos b$ = +2.1 $\pm$ 0.2 mas yr$^{-1}$; $\mu_b$ = $-$0.1 $\pm$ 0.2 mas yr$^{-1}$. These values agree remarkably well with those expected from the differential rotation of the Milky Way. Subtraction of this mean motion from the individual measurements allows us to register all proper motions to the rest frame of the Orion nebula, and identify radio sources with large residual velocities. In the KL region, we find three sources in this situation: the BN object, the radio source I, and the radio counterpart of the infrared source n. All three objects appear to be moving away from a common point where they must all have been located about 500 years ago. This suggests that all three sources were originally part of a multiple massive stellar system that recently disintegrated as a result of a close dynamical, Comment: Accepted for publication in the ApJ

Theoretical arguments suggest that protoplanetary disks around young stars should start small and grow with the addition of high angular momentum material to reach the radii of several hundred AUs that characterize the disks around optically visible T Tauri stars. Examples of much more compact disks, with radii much less than 100 AU, have been found around some very young stars, but in all cases tidal truncation from a near binary companion provides a ready explanation for the small disk size. We report here an example of a compact, possibly isolated disk around the class 0 object IRAS16293-2422B, which is thought to be among the youngest protostars known. This disk has a Gaussian half power radius of only $\sim$8 AU, and a detailed, self-consistent, accretion disk model indicates an outer radius of only 26 AU. This discovery supports the notion that protoplanetary disks start small and grow with time, although other explanations for the compact size cannot be ruled out, including gravitational instability in its outer parts and tidal truncation from the close approach of a now distant stellar companion.

In this Letter, we present a series of seven observations of the compact, non-thermal radio source associated with T Tauri South made with the Very Long Baseline Array over the course of one year. The emission is found to be composed of a compact structure most certainly originating from the magnetosphere of an underlying pre-main sequence star, and a low-brightness extension which may result from reconnection flares at the star-disk interface. The accuracy of the absolute astrometry offered by the VLBA allows very precise determinations of the trigonometric parallax and proper motion of T Tau South. The proper motion derived from our VLBA observations agrees with that measured with the VLA over a similar period to better than 2 mas yr$^{-1}$, and is fully consistent with the infrared proper motion of T Tau Sb, the pre-main sequence M star with which the radio source has traditionally been associated. The parallax, $\pi$ = 7.07 $\pm$ 0.14 mas, corresponds to a distance of 141.5$^{+2.8}_{-2.7}$ pc., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted by ApJ Letters (Feb. 2005)

We present the analysis of high angular resolution VLA radio observations, made at eleven epochs over the last 20 years, of the multiple system T Tauri. One of the sources (Sb) in the system has moved at moderate speed (5-10 km/s), on an apparently elliptical orbit during the first 15 years of observations, but after a close (< 2 AU) encounter with the source Sa, it appears to have accelerated westward to about 20 km/s in the last few years. Such a dramatic orbital change most probably indicates that Sb has just suffered an ejection - which would be the first such event ever detected. Whether Sb will ultimately stay on a highly elliptical bound orbit, or whether it will leave the system altogether will be known with about five more years of observations., 4 pages, accepter in ApJ Letters

Using high angular resolution (~01) Very Large Array observations made at 2 cm during the period 1983 to 1998, we report the detection of proper motions in the components of the binary radio source in L1551 IRS 5. The absolute proper motions observed in these two protostars, of order 25 mas yr-1 or ~17 km s-1 at a distance of 140 pc, are very similar in magnitude and direction to those of T Tauri stars in the same region and are attributed to the large-scale motion of the parent molecular complex. The relative astrometry between the two components reveals orbital proper motions that suggest that the total mass and period of the binary system are ~1.2 M☉ and ~260 yr, respectively.

Using high angular resolution 7 mm Very Large Array (VLA) observations, we show that the low-mass protostellar object IRAS 043682557 in L1527 is composed of two radio sources separated in projection by 25 AU. One of the two components is extended in the direction perpendicular to the outflow powered by IRAS 043682557 and is, most likely, a compact accretion disk ( AU), similar to those found in L1551 R ∼ 20 IRS 5 by Rodro ´guez et al. As in L1551 IRS 5, the disk found here is small compared to those around T Tauri stars. Tidal interactions with nearby companions provide a natural way of truncating disks, and we argue that the two millimeter-wavelength sources in L1527 trace a compact binary system, where the disk surrounding one of the components has been truncated by the tidal influence of the other. A comparison between observations obtained in 1996 and 2002 reveals large proper motions, which can be only partly attributed to the overall largescale motion of the region in which IRAS 043682557 is located. The remaining “residual” proper motions might trace the orbital motion of the binary and would suggest a total mass for the system larger than 0.2 M, and likely of the order of 0.5–2 M,. This mass (only a small fraction of which is in the disk) is of the same order as that of the extended surrounding envelope of gas and dust traced by far-infrared and submillimeter observations ( M,), implying that the stars that will eventually form out of IRAS 043682557 would M ∼ 0.5 env have already acquired a significant fraction of their final masses. It is worth noting that multiepoch VLA studies of nearby protobinary systems similar to that presented here could provide direct mass estimates in most nearby star-forming sites. Combined with submillimeter observations of the surrounding envelopes, this would provide a more reliable measure of the evolutionary status of binary protostars. Ultra-Compact (UC)HII regions represent a very early stage of massive star formation whose structure and evolution are not yet fully understood. Interferometric observations in recent years show that some UCHII regions have associated compact sources of uncertain nature. Based on this, we carried out VLA 1.3 cm observations in the A configuration of selected UCHII regions in order to report additional cases of compact sources embedded in UCHII regions. From the observations, we find 13 compact sources associated to 9 UCHII regions. Although we cannot establish an unambiguous nature for the newly detected sources, we assess some of their observational properties. According to the results, we can distinguish between two types of compact sources. One type corresponds to sources that probably are deeply embedded in the dense ionized gas of the UCHII region. These sources are being photo-evaporated by the exciting star of the region and will last for 10$^4-10^5$ yr. They may play a crucial role in the evolution of the UCHII region as the photo-evaporated material could replenish the expanding plasma and might provide a solution to the so-called lifetime problem for these regions. The second type of compact sources is not associated with the densest ionized gas of the region. A few of these sources appear resolved and may be photo-evaporating objects such as those of the first type but with significantly lower mass depletion rates. The rest of sources of this second type appear unresolved and their properties are varied. Single-dish sub-millimeter observations have recently revealed the existence of a substantial, chemically peculiar, molecular gas component located in the innermost circumstellar environment of the very massive luminous blue variable star $\eta$ Carinae. Here, we present 5$"$-resolution interferometric observations of the 1$\rightarrow$0 rotational transition of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) toward this star. The emission is concentrated in the central few arcseconds around $\eta$ Carinae and shows a clear 150 km s$^{-1}$ velocity gradient running from west-north-west (blue) to east-south-east (red). Given the extent, location, and kinematics of this molecular material, we associate it with the complex of dusty arcs and knots seen in mid-infrared emission near the center of the Homunculus nebula. Indeed, the shielding provided by this dust could help explain how molecules survive in the presence of the intense UV radiation field produced by $\eta$ Carinae. The dust located in the central few arcseconds around $\eta$ Carinae and the molecular component described here have most likely formed in situ, out of material expelled by the massive interacting binary system. Thus, $\eta$ Carinae offers us a rare glimpse on the processes leading to the formation of dust and molecules around massive stars that are so relevant to the interpretation of dust and molecule detections at high redshifts., Comment: Accepted in ApJ

We have mapped the IRAS 4-SVS 13 region in the NGC 1333 star-forming complex in the SiO v=0 lines at 3, 2, and 1.3 mm using the IRAM 30 m telescope. In addition to high-velocity components associated with protostellar activity in IRAS 4 and other sources, we report the detection of an extended layer of gas at ambient velocities, traced by an extremely narrow and fairly bright component (Δv=0.4-1.2 km s-1, TB=2 K). The SiO abundance in that layer is typically 1-3×10−10. This is 2 orders of magnitude lower than in the high-velocity flows but about 2 orders of magnitude higher than the abundance in quiescent clouds. Several mechanisms that could account for such emission are briefly discussed: high-temperature chemical reactions in the gas surrounding the protostellar wind of SVS 13 and interaction between the neighboring protostellar outflows and local small gas condensations in the vicinity of IRAS 4.

We present new interferometric 12CO (1-0) and single-dish 12CO (3-2) observations of the central parts of D478, a large (>200 pc) dark dust cloud located in a quiescent region of the inner disk of M31, where single-dish 12CO (1-0) and 12CO (2-1) observations were previously obtained. We have used the 30 m IRAM millimeter radio telescope to search for two low-lying rotational transitions of the CO-H2 dimer in the emission spectra of three Galactic sources and in the absorption spectrum of a low-latitude extragalactic continuum source. We first summarize the structure of this dimer as it can be inferred currently from laboratory infrared spectroscopy. The transitions we have observed and their initial estimated frequencies are the 111-↔000+ line at ~109 GHz and the 110+↔101- line at ~91 GHz. The search targets were the TMC-1 and L134 dark clouds, the L1157 bipolar outflow, and the compact radio continuum source 2013+370. The spectral search covered the frequency ranges from 90.58 to 91.10 GHz and from 108.95 to 109.46 GHz. Several known emission lines were found, including HC3N (12-11), HC3N (10-9), OCS, SO, and HNC, but no other features were seen in the spectra. The rms noise was typically 5 mK per 1 MHz channel (≈ 3 km s-1). Improved laboratory values for the frequencies were obtained after the 30 m observations were made and are also given here for future reference. The frequency of the 111-↔000+ line may now fall outside of our present search range, but the 110+↔101- frequency is likely to be within it. We conclude that the fractional abundance of the CO-H2 dimer with respect to the CO monomer is typically ≤1 × 10-4, if the excitation temperature is at least a few degrees above the cosmic background. This is the most stringent upper limit yet placed on the presence of a dimer in the interstellar medium.

We describe a high-resolution, high-sensitivity CO(1-0) survey of a large fraction of the south-west star-forming "ring" 20 kpc in diameter in M31 made with the 14 m FCRAO telescope and its QUARRY receiver array. At the 45'' angular resolution of the telescope, the ring is resolved into giant complexes of molecular gas with typical sizes of a few hundred parsecs and masses in excess to 106 M☉. Most of these delineate a prominent spiral arm coincident with that traced by atomic hydrogen and dust. This arm appears in all respects quite similar to a prominent spiral arm in our Galaxy at about the same Galactic radius: the Carina arm. Closer to the center, a second fainter molecular spiral arm segment with an H I and dust counterpart is also detected. The main OB associations and the UV light define an arm offset from that traced by the gas by about 500 pc. The H II regions are mainly found either along the edge of the prominent gaseous arm which faces the associations, or aligned with the second fainter gaseous arm. They define Baade's arms S4 and S3, respectively.

We report the discovery of variable radio emission associated with the T Tauri star, V830 Tau, which was recently shown to host a hot Jupiter companion. Very Large Array observations at a frequency of 6 GHz reveal a detection on 01 May 2011 with a flux density $919 \pm 26\ ��$Jy, along with non-detections in two other epochs at $}{\scriptstyle \sim}} 30$ G, and is likely driven by an energetic event such as magnetic reconnection that accelerated electrons. With the limited data we have, we are not able to place any constraint on the relationship between the radio emission and the rotational or orbital properties of V830 Tau. This is the first detection of radio emission from a non-degenerate star known to host an exoplanet., ApJ, in press

We present high angular resolution ($\sim$0.94$"$) $^{12}$CO(1-0) Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations obtained during the 2014 long baseline campaign from the eruptive bipolar flow from the multiple XZ Tau stellar system discovered by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). These observations reveal, for the first time, the kinematics of the molecular flow. The kinematics of the different ejections close to XZ Tau reveal a rotating and expanding structure with a southeast-northwest velocity gradient. The youngest eruptive bubbles unveiled in the optical HST images are inside of this molecular expanding structure. Additionally, we report a very compact and collimated bipolar outflow emanating from XZ Tau A, which indicates that the eruptive outflow is indeed originating from this object. The mass (3 $\times$ 10$^{-7}$ $M_\odot$) and energetics (E$_{kin}$ $=$ 3 $\times$ 10$^{37}$ ergs) for the collimated outflow are comparable with those found in molecular outflows associated with young brown dwarfs., Comment: Accepted to ApJ Letters

We report 1.3 cm and 6 cm continuum observations toward the massive proto-stellar candidate G11.11-0.12P1 using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA). We detect a string of four unresolved radio continuum sources coincident with the mid-IR source in G11P1. The continuum sources have positive spectral indices consistent with a thermal (free-free) ionized jet. The most likely origin of the ionized gas are shocks due to the interaction of a stellar wind with the surrounding high-density material. We also present NIR United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) archival data which show an extended structure detected only at K-band (2.2 $\mu$m), which is oriented perpendicular to the jet, and that may be scattered light from a circumstellar disk around the massive protostar. Our observations plus the UKIRT archival data thus provide new evidence that a disk/jet system is present in the massive protostellar candidate located in the G11.11-0.12P1 core., Comment: Accepted for publication in the ApJ; 5 figures

We present new deep ($\sigma\sim6~\mu$Jy) radio images of the HH~124~IRS Radio Cluster at 4.8 and 7.5 GHz. We detect a total of 50 radio sources, most of them compact. Variability and spectral indices were analyzed in order to determine the nature of the sources and of their radio emission. A proper motion study was also performed for several of these radio sources using radio observation previously reported. Our analysis shows that 11 radio sources can be related with Galactic objects, most of them probably young stars. Interestingly, eight of these sources are in an area less than 1 square arcminute in size. The importance of such compact clusters resides in that all its members can be observed in a single pointing with most telescopes, and are, therefore, ideal for multi-wavelength studies of variability. Another 4 of the detected sources are clearly extragalactic. Finally, we propose from statistical arguments that from the remaining sources, about 10 are Galactic, but our study does not allow us to identify which of the sources fall in that specific category. The relatively large proper motions observed for the sources in HH~124~IRS suggest that this region is located at about 400 pc from the Sun. This is significantly smaller than the $\sim$800--900 pc distance usually assigned to the nearby open cluster NGC~2264 with which HH~124 is thought to be associated. However, a reanalysis of the Hipparcos parallaxes for members of NGC~2264, a convergent point approach, and a kinematic analysis all argue in favor of a distance of order 400 pc for NGC~2264 as well., Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures, 6 tables. We present new Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array observations of the compact (~ 0.05"), time-variable radio source projected near the center of the ultracompact HII region W3(OH). The analysis of our new data as well as of VLA archival observations confirms the variability of the source on timescales of years and for a given epoch indicates a spectral index of \alpha = 1.3 +- 0.3 (S_\nu \propto \nu^\alpha). This spectral index and the brightness temperature of the source (~6,500 K) suggest that we are most probably detecting partially optically thick free-free radiation. The radio source is probably associated with the ionizing star of W3(OH), but an interpretation in terms of an ionized stellar wind fails because the detected flux densities are orders of magnitude larger than expected. We discuss several scenarios and tentatively propose that the radio emission could arise in a static ionized atmosphere around a fossil photoevaporated disk., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We present high-resolution sub/millimeter interferometric imaging of the Class 0 protostar L1527 IRS (IRAS 04368+2557) at 870 micron and 3.4 mm from the Submillimeter Array (SMA) and Combined Array for Research in Millimeter Astronomy (CARMA). We detect the signature of an edge-on disk surrounding the protostar with an observed diameter of 180 AU in the sub/millimeter images. The mass of the disk is estimated to be 0.007 M_sun, assuming optically thin, isothermal dust emission. The millimeter spectral index is observed to be quite shallow at all the spatial scales probed; alpha ~ 2, implying a dust opacity spectral index beta ~ 0. We model the emission from the disk and surrounding envelope using Monte Carlo radiative transfer codes, simultaneously fitting the sub/millimeter visibility amplitudes, sub/millimeter images, resolved L\arcmin\ image, spectral energy distribution, and mid-infrared spectrum. The best fitting model has a disk radius of R = 125 AU, is highly flared (H ~ R^1.3), has a radial density profile rho ~ R^-2.5, and has a mass of 0.0075 M_sun. The scale height at 100 AU is 48 AU, about a factor of two greater than vertical hydrostatic equilibrium. The resolved millimeter observations indicate that disks may grow rapidly throughout the Class 0 phase. The mass and radius of the young disk around L1527 is comparable to disks around pre-main sequence stars; however, the disk is considerably more vertically extended, possibly due to a combination of lower protostellar mass, infall onto the disk upper layers, and little settling of ~1 micron-sized dust grains., Comment: 45 pages, 11 Figures, 7 Tables, Accepted to ApJ

Sensitive high angular resolution ($\sim$ 2$"$) CO(2-1) line observations made with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) of the flow emanating from the high-mass star forming region DR21 located in the Cygnus X molecular cloud are presented. These new interferometric observations indicate that this well known enigmatic outflow appears to have been produced by an explosive event that took place about 10,000 years ago, and that might be related with the disintegration of a massive stellar system, as the one that occurred in Orion BN/KL 500 years ago, but about 20 times more energetic. This result therefore argues in favor of the idea that the disintegration of young stellar systems perhaps is a frequent phenomenon present during the formation of the massive stars. We report on new high-resolution imaging and spectroscopy on the multiple T Tauri star system V773 Tau over the 2003 -- 2009 period. With these data we derive relative astrometry, photometry between the A and B components, and radial velocity (RV) of the A-subsystem components. Combining these new data with previously published astrometry and RVs, we update the relative A-B orbit model. This updated orbit model, the known system distance, and A subsystem parameters yields a dynamical mass for the B component for the first time. Remarkably the derived B dynamical mass is in the range of 1.7 -- 3.0 M$_\sun$. This is much higher than previous estimates, and suggests that like A, B is also a multiple stellar system. Among these data, spatially-resolved spectroscopy provide new insight into the nature of the B component. Similar to A, these near-IR spectra indicate that the dominant source in B is of mid-K spectral type. If B is in fact a multiple star system as suggested by the dynamical mass estimate, the simplest assumption is that B is composed of similar $\sim$ 1.2 M$_\sun$ PMS stars in a close ($, Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication ApJ. We present sensitive high angular resolution ($\sim$ 1$"$) millimeter continuum and line observations from the massive star forming region DR21(OH) located in the Cygnus X molecular cloud. Within the well-known dusty MM1-2 molecular cores, we report the detection of a new cluster of about ten compact continuum millimeter sources with masses between 5 and 24 M$_\odot$, and sizes of a few thousands of astronomical units. These objects are likely to be large dusty envelopes surrounding massive protostars, some of them most probably driving several of the outflows that emanate from this region. Additionally, we report the detection of strong millimeter emission of formaldehyde (H$_2$CO) and methanol (CH$_3$OH) near 218 GHz as well as compact emission from the typical outflow tracers carbon monoxide and silicon monoxide (CO and SiO) toward this massive star-forming region. The H$_2$CO and CH$_3$OH emission is luminous ($\sim$ 10$^{-4}$ L$_{\odot}$), well resolved, and found along the collimated methanol maser outflow first identified at centimeter wavelengths and in the sources SMA6 and SMA7. Our observations suggest that this maser outflow might be energized by a millimeter source called SMA4 located in the MM2 dusty core. The CO and SiO emission traces some other collimated outflows that emanate from MM1-2 cores, and are not related with the low velocity maser outflow., Accepted to ApJ

We have used the Expanded Very Large Array (EVLA) with two 1 GHz wide bands to obtain K-band (1.3 cm) continuum observations toward the following five hot molecular core candidates: IRAS 18151 – 1208, IRAS 18182 – 1433, IRAS 18345 – 0641, IRAS 18470 – 0044, and IRAS 19012 + 0536. The sources were selected from the 2002 list of Sridharan et al. and are characterized by high FIR luminosity, dense molecular and dust condensations, massive large-scale CO flows, and the absence of strong cm continuum emission. These properties are indicative of massive star-forming regions in an evolutionary phase prior to ultra- or hypercompact H II regions. We detect a total of 10 individual 1.3 cm continuum sources toward this sample, and derive in-band spectral indices between 19.3 and 25.5 GHz consistent with thermal free-free emission, for all sources except component A in IRAS 18182 – 1433, which has a negative spectral index indicative of synchrotron emission. We suggest that in most cases the 1.3 cm sources are due to shock-induced ionization, rather than direct photoionization by massive objects. The momentum rate present in these ionized flows is sufficient to drive the large-scale molecular flows. We discuss a number of morphological features supporting this hypothesis. The present observations demonstrate that the EVLA has sufficient sensitivity to study the regions near very young massive stars in the cm continuum.

The radio emission from the well-studied massive stellar system Cyg OB2 #5 is known to fluctuate with a period of 6.7 years between a low-flux state when the emission is entirely of free-free origin, and a high-flux state when an additional non-thermal component (of hitherto unknown nature) appears. In this paper, we demonstrate that the radio flux of that non-thermal component is steady on timescales of hours, and that its morphology is arc-like. This shows that the non-thermal emission results from the collision between the strong wind driven by the known contact binary in the system, and that of an unseen companion on a somewhat eccentric orbit with a 6.7-yr period and a 5 to 10 mas semi-major axis. Together with the previously reported wind-collision region located about 0.8 arcsec to the north-east of the contact binary, Cyg OB2 #5 appears to be the only multiple system known so far to harbor two radio-imaged wind-collision regions., Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

To determine the origin of the spiral structure observed in the dust continuum emission of Elias 2-27 we analyze multi-wavelength continuum ALMA data with a resolution of $\sim$0.2 arcsec ($\sim$23au) at 0.89, 1.3 and 3.3mm. We also study the kinematics of the disk with $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O ALMA observations in the $J=$3-2 transition. The spiral arm morphology is recovered at all wavelengths in the dust continuum observations, where we measure contrast and spectral index variations along the spiral arms and detect subtle dust-trapping signatures. We determine that the emission from the midplane is cold and interpret the optical depth results as signatures of a higher disk mass than previous constraints. From the gas data, we search for deviations from Keplerian motion and trace the morphology of the emitting surfaces and the velocity profiles. We find an azimuthally varying emission layer height in the system, large-scale emission surrounding the disk, and strong perturbations in the channel maps, co-located with the spirals. Additionally, we develop multigrain dust and gas SPH simulations of a gravitationally unstable disk and compare them to the observations. Given the large scale emission and highly perturbed gas structure, together with the comparison of continuum observations to theoretical predictions, we propose infall-triggered gravitational instabilities as origin for the observed spiral structure., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 38 pages, 23 Figures

We report a study of the low-mass Class 0 multiple system VLA 1623AB in the Ophiuchus star-forming region, using H13CO+ (J = 3–2), CS (J = 5–4), and CCH (N = 3–2) lines as part of the ALMA Large Program FAUST. The analysis of the velocity fields revealed the rotation motion in the envelope and the velocity gradients in the outflows (about 2000 au down to 50 au). We further investigated the rotation of the circumbinary VLA 1623A disk, as well as the VLA 1623B disk. We found that the minor axis of the circumbinary disk of VLA 1623A is misaligned by about 12° with respect to the large-scale outflow and the rotation axis of the envelope. In contrast, the minor axis of the circumbinary disk is parallel to the large-scale magnetic field according to previous dust polarization observations, suggesting that the misalignment may be caused by the different directions of the envelope rotation and the magnetic field. If the velocity gradient of the outflow is caused by rotation, the outflow has a constant angular momentum and the launching radius is estimated to be 5–16 au, although it cannot be ruled out that the velocity gradient is driven by entrainments of the two high-velocity outflows. Furthermore, we detected for the first time a velocity gradient associated with rotation toward the VLA 16293B disk. The velocity gradient is opposite to the one from the large-scale envelope, outflow, and circumbinary disk. The origin of its opposite gradient is also discussed.
