Search

The surface processes on interstellar dust grains have an important role in the chemical evolution in molecular clouds. Hydrogenation reactions on ice surfaces have been extensively investigated and are known to proceed at low temperatures mostly below 20 K. In contrast, information about the chemical processes of molecules within an ice mantle is lacking. In this work, we investigated diffusive hydrogenation reactions of carbon monoxide (CO) embedded in amorphous solid water (ASW) as a model case and discovered that the hydrogenation of CO efficiently proceeds to yield H2CO and CH3OH even above 20 K when CO is buried beneath ASW. The experimental results suggest that hydrogen atoms diffuse through the cracks of ASW and have a sufficient residence time to react with embedded CO. The hydrogenation reactions occurred even at temperatures up to ~70 K. Cracks collapse at elevated temperatures but the occurrence of hydrogenation reactions means that the cracks would not completely disappear and remain large enough for penetration by hydrogen atoms. Considering the hydrogen-atom fluence in the laboratory and molecular clouds, we suggest that the penetration of hydrogen and its reactions within the ice mantle occur in astrophysical environments. Extreme outbursts in young stars may be a common stage of pre-main-sequence stellar evolution. These outbursts, caused by enhanced accretion and accompanied by increased luminosity, can also strongly impact the evolution of the circumstellar environment. We present ALMA and VLA observations of EX Lupi, a prototypical outburst system, at 100 GHz, 45 GHz, and 15 GHz. We use these data, along with archival ALMA 232 GHz data, to fit radiative transfer models to EX Lupi's circumstellar disk in its quiescent state following the extreme outburst in 2008. The best fit models show a compact disk with a characteristic dust radius of 45 au and a total mass of 0.01 M$_{\odot}$. Our modeling suggests grain growth to sizes of at least 3 mm in the disk, possibly spurred by the recent outburst, and an ice line that has migrated inward to $0.2-0.3$ au post-outburst. At 15 GHz, we detected significant emission over the expected thermal disk emission which we attribute primarily to stellar (gyro)synchrotron and free-free disk emission. The catalytic role of dust grain surfaces in the thermal reaction CO2 + 2NH3 $\rightarrow$ NH4+NH2COO was recently demonstrated by our group. The rate coefficients for the reaction at 80 K on the surface of nanometre-sized carbon and silicate grains were measured to be up to three times higher compared to the reaction rate coefficients measured on KBr. In this study, the reaction was performed on carbon grains and on KBr in the extended temperature range of 50 - 80 K and with the addition of water ice. The reaction activation energy was found to be about 3 times lower on grains compared to the corresponding ice layer on KBr. Thus, the catalytic role of the dust grain surface in the studied reaction can be related to a reduction of the reaction barrier. Addition of water to NH3:CO2 ice on grains slowed the reaction down. At the H2O:CO2 ratio of 5:1, the reaction was not detected on the experimental timescale. This result calls into question the thermal formation of ammonium carbamate in dense molecular clouds and outer regions of protostellar and protoplanetary environments with dominating water ice mantle chemistry. However, it can still happen in inner regions of protostellar and protoplanetary environments in crystalline ices.

We present optical and near-infrared ($ugriYJH$) photometry of host galaxies of Type Ia supernovae (SN~Ia) observed by the \textit{Carnegie Supernova Project-I}. We determine host galaxy stellar masses and, for the first time, study their correlation with SN~Ia standardized luminosity across optical and near-infrared ($uBgVriYJH$) bands. In the individual bands, we find that SNe~Ia are more luminous in more massive hosts with luminosity offsets ranging between $-0.07 \pm0.03$ mag to $-0.15\pm0.04$ mag after light-curve standardization. The slope of the SN~Ia Hubble residual-host mass relation is negative across all $uBgVriYJH$ bands with values ranging between $-0.036\pm 0.025$ mag/dex to $-0.097\pm 0.027$ mag/dex -- implying that SNe~Ia in more massive galaxies are brighter than expected. The near-constant observed correlations across optical and near-infrared bands indicate that dust may not play a significant role in the observed luminosity offset--host mass correlation. We measure projected separations between SNe~Ia and their host centers, and find that SNe~Ia that explode beyond a projected 10 kpc have a $\rm 30\% \ to \ 50\%$ reduction of the dispersion in Hubble residuals across all bands -- making them a more uniform subset of SNe~Ia. Dust in host galaxies, peculiar velocities of nearby SN~Ia, or a combination of both may drive this result as the color excesses of SNe~Ia beyond 10 kpc are found to be generally lower than those interior, but there is also a diminishing trend of the dispersion as we exclude nearby events. We do not find that SN~Ia average luminosity varies significantly when they are grouped in various host morphological types. Using physical models, we study the sensitivity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission spectra to the character of the illuminating starlight, to the PAH size distribution, and to the PAH charge distribution. Starlight models considered range from the emission from a 3 Myr-old starburst, rich in far-ultraviolet (FUV) radiation, to the FUV-poor spectrum of the very old population of the M31 bulge. A wide range of starlight intensities is considered. The effects of reddening in dusty clouds are investigated for different starlight spectra. We have studied optical properties of interstellar dust around the Orion A molecular cloud to investigate the size distribution and the composition of dust grains. Orion A is one of the most studied molecular clouds in the solar vicinity ($d \simeq 400\ \rm{pc}$). In this paper, we used optical and near-infrared photometric data. The optical data were obtained by $BVRI$ bands imaging observations. The near-infrared data consisting of $JHK_{S}$ bands were taken from 2MASS point source catalog. We produced some color excess maps around Orion A, and measured their ratios such as $E(R-I)/E(B-V)$. In order to investigate dust properties, we compared the observed ratios with results of simulation performed by Naoi T. et al. (2021) who calculated the extinction in the optical to near-infrared wavelengths based on a standard dust model; they assumed a power-law grain-size distribution with an upper cutoff radius and assumed $graphite$ and $silicate$ as dominant components. As a result, we found that the upper cutoff radius around Orion A is $\simeq 0.3$ $\rm{\mu}$m, and $silicate$ predominates compared with $graphite$ (with the fraction of $silicate$ grater than $93$ %). In addition, we further derived the total-to-selective extinction ratio $R_{V}$ from the observed extinction of $A_{V}$ and the color excess $E(B-V)$, and compared it with the model calculations. We investigated fundamental processes of collisional sticking and fragmentation of dust aggregates by carrying out N-body simulations of submicron-sized icy dust monomers. We examined the condition for collisional growth of two colliding dust aggregates in a wide range of the mass ratio, 1-64. We found that the mass transfer from a larger dust aggregate to a smaller one is a dominant process in collisions with a mass ratio of 2-30 and impact velocity of \approx 30-170 m s^-1. As a result, the critical velocity, v_fra, for fragmentation of the largest body is considerably reduced for such unequal-mass collisions; v_fra of collisions with a mass ratio of 3 is about half of that obtained from equal-mass collisions. The impact velocity is generally higher for collisions between dust aggregates with higher mass ratios because of the difference between the radial drift velocities in the typical condition of protoplanetary disks. We probe the dusty environment of the archetypical type-1 AGN in NGC 4151 with comprehensive IR reverberation mapping over several decades, in J ($\sim1.22\mu$m), H ($\sim1.63\mu$m), K ($\sim2.19\mu$m), L ($\sim3.45\mu$m) and N-band ($\sim10.6\mu m$), plus multiple measurements at 20--40 $\mu$m. At 1--4$\mu$m, the hot dust reverberation signals come from two distinct dust populations at separate radii ($\sim$0.033 pc and $\sim$0.076 pc), with temperatures of $\sim$1500--2500 K and $\sim$900--1000 K, consistent with the expected properties of sublimating graphite and silicate dust grains. The domination of the torus infrared output by carbon and silicate grains near their sublimation temperatures and radii may account for the general similarity of AGN near-IR spectral energy distributions. The torus inner edge defined by the hottest dust remains at roughly the same radius independent of the AGN optical luminosity over $\sim$25 years. The emission by hot dust warmed directly by the optical/UV AGN output has increased gradually by $\sim$4\%/year, indicating a possibly growing torus. A third dust component at $\sim$700 K does not seem to participate directly in the IR reverberation behavior and its emission may originate deep in the circumnuclear torus. We find a reverberation signal at $\sim10\mu$m with an inferred radius for the warm dust of $\sim$2.2--3.1 pc. The lack of variability at 20--40$\mu$m indicates the far-IR emission comes from even more extended regions. The torus properties revealed by dust reverberation analysis are inconsistent with predictions from pure clumpy torus models. We report on Mg and Si isotope data of 86 presolar silicate grains identified through NanoSIMS oxygen ion imaging in thin sections of carbonaceous and ordinary chondrites. The O, Mg, and Si isotope data of 106 presolar silicates (including grains studied previously by our group) suggest division of O isotope Group 1 grains into four subpopulations: (i) “normal,” (ii) 25Mg-rich, (iii) 26Mg-rich, and (iv) 25Mg-poor. Normal Group 1 grains (∼60% of Group 1 grains) formed in the winds of low-mass asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, with Mg and Si defining linear arrays with slopes of ∼0.9 and 1.37, respectively, in three-isotope representations, most likely representing Galactic chemical evolution (GCE). The 25Mg-rich grains (∼25%) show enrichments in 25Mg of up to a factor 2.4 relative to solar composition and most likely formed in supernova (SN) ejecta or the winds of intermediate-mass AGB stars. The 26Mg-rich and 25Mg-poor Group 1 grains lie below the Mg GCE line and their isotopic compositions favor origins from supergiants or SNe. The O isotope Group 2 grains show a wide range of Mg-isotopic compositions, similar to Group 1 grains, with likely origins from massive AGB stars, super-AGB stars, supergiants, and SNe. The Mg- and Si-isotopic compositions of Group 4 grains are compatible with previously proposed SN origins. Our results suggest that >30% of presolar silicates formed in the winds of supergiants and in SN ejecta, and that low-mass AGB stars appear to have contributed only some 50% to presolar silicates, less than previously thought.

Interstellar dust grains are known to facilitate chemical reactions by acting as a meeting place and adsorbing energy. This process strongly depends on the ability of the reactive species to effectively diffuse over the surface. The cold temperatures around 10 K strongly hamper this for species other than H and H2. However, complex organic molecules have been observed in the gas phase at these cold conditions, indicating that their formation, as well as their return to the gas phase, should be effective. Here, we show how the energy released following surface reactions can be employed to solve both problems by inducing desorption or diffusion. To this purpose, we have performed thousands of Molecular Dynamics simulations to quantify the outcome of an energy dissipation process. Admolecules on top of a crystalline water surface have been given translational energy between 0.5 and 5 eV. Three different surface species are considered (CO2, H2O, and CH4), spanning a range in binding energies, number of internal degrees of freedom, and molecular weights. The admolecules are found to be able to travel up to several hundreds of angstroms before coming to a stand still, allowing for follow-up reactions en route. The probability of travel beyond any particular radius, as determined by our simulations, shows the same r dependence for all three admolecule species. Furthermore, we have been able to quantify the desorption probability, which depends on the binding energy of the species and the translational excitation. We provide expressions that can be incorporated in astrochemical models to predict grain surface formation and return into the gas phase of these products.

The detection of phosphorous-bearing molecules in interstellar environments constitutes a fundamental task for understanding the formation of prebiotic molecules, but it is also a challenge. In cold interstellar environments, where rich chemistry is expected to happen, only PN and PO have been detected. Phosphine (PH3) must also play an essential role in these regions, since P is expected to deplete onto dust grains significantly, and hydrogenation reactions are dominant in such environments. Surface chemistry on dust grains shows a particular idiosyncrasy where an equilibrium between competitive reactions, photoconversion processes, and desorption are in continuous interplay, modifying both the dust composition and the gas composition. In this study, we theoretically study in detail the interconversion of P to PH3 via subsequent additions of H on cold dust grain analogs. For all reactions, we provide the binding energy of the adsorbates, reaction energies, and, when present, activation barriers and tunneling-corrected rate constants. We also present an estimate of the desorption temperature of these species based on transition state theory. Using recently available experimental results on PH3 desorption via chemical reactions, we conclude that all of the intermediate products of the hydrogenation sequence to phosphine may be released to the gas phase.

Although interstellar grains are known to be aspherical, their actual shapes remain poorly constrained. We assess whether three continuous distributions of ellipsoidal shapes from the literature are suitable for describing the shapes of interstellar grains. Randomly-selected shapes from each distribution are shown as illustrations. The often-used Bohren-Huffman CDE includes a very large fraction of extreme shapes: fully 10% of random draws have axial ratio $a_3/a_1 > 19.7$, and 5% have $a_3/a_1 > 33$. The CDE2 distribution includes a much smaller fraction of extreme shapes, and appears to be more realistic. For each of the three CDEs considered, we derive shape-averaged cross sections for extinction and polarization in the Rayleigh limit. Finally, we describe a method for "synthesizing" a dielectric function for an assumed shape or shape distribution if the actual absorption cross sections per grain volume in the Rayleigh limit are known from observations. This synthetic dielectric function predicts the wavelength dependence of polarization, which can then be compared to observations to constrain the grain shape., 23 pages, 8 figures. ApJ, accepted

We present direct spectroscopic measurements of the broad 2175~{\AA} absorption feature in 505 star-forming main-sequence galaxies at $1.3\le z\le 1.8$ using individual and stacked spectra from the zCOSMOS-deep survey. Significant 2175~{\AA} excess absorption features of moderate strength are measured, especially in the composite spectra. The excess absorption is well described by a Drude profile. The bump amplitude expressed in units of $k(\lambda)=A(\lambda)/E(B-V)$, relative to the featureless Calzetti et al. law, has a range $B_k\approx0.2\textrm{--}0.8$. The bump amplitude decreases with the specific star formation rate (sSFR), while it increases moderately with the stellar mass. However, a comparison with local "starburst" galaxies shows that the high-redshift main-sequence galaxies have stronger bump features, despite having a higher sSFR than the local sample. Plotting the bump strength against the $\Delta\log\mathrm{sSFR}\equiv \log \left( \mathrm{SFR}/\mathrm{SFR_{MS}}\right)$ relative to the main sequence, however, brings the two samples into much better concordance. This may indicate that it is the recent star formation history of the galaxies that determines the bump strength through the destruction of small carbonaceous grains by supernovae and intense radiation fields coupled with the time delay of $\sim1~\mathrm{Gyr}$ in the appearance of carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch stars., Comment: Published in ApJ on 2021 March 19

The dielectric function of interstellar dust material is modeled using observations of extinction and polarization in the infrared, together with estimates for the mass of interstellar dust. The "astrodust" material is assumed to be a mix of amorphous silicates and other materials, including hydrocarbons producing an absorption feature at 3.4$\mu$m. The detailed shape of the 10$\mu$m polarization profile depends on the assumed porosity and grain shape, but the 10$\mu$m spectropolarimetric data are not yet good enough to clearly favor one shape over another, nor to constrain the porosity. The expected 3.4$\mu$m feature polarization is consistent with existing upper limits, provided the 3.4$\mu$m absorption is preferentially located in grain surface layers; a separate population of non-aligned carbonaceous grains is not required. We predict the 3.4$\mu$m polarization feature to be $(\Delta p)_{3.4\mu{\rm m}}/p(10\mu{\rm m})\approx 0.016$, just below current upper limits. Faraday cups can measure velocity distribution functions of space plasmas and are frequent instruments on heliophysics missions. A new version of a Faraday cup instrument is in development for the Luna 26 mission and will be used for fast monitoring of the solar wind plasma parameters. The prototype of this instrument is exposed to dust impacts in a velocity range of 0.2–60 km s−1 using an electrostatic dust accelerator. The collected data are used to evaluate the sensitivity and detection efficiency of dust particles on two different surfaces. The results indicate that the sensitivity is sufficient for detection of the interplanetary dust as well as for the registration of the dust lifted from the lunar surface. A simple modification of the FC electronics would increase the detection efficiency by an order of magnitude.

Variations in the grain size distribution are to be expected in the interstellar medium (ISM) due to grain growth and destruction. In this work, we present a dust collision model to be implemented inside a magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) code that takes into account grain growth and shattering of charged dust grains of a given composition (silicate or graphite). We integrate this model in the MHD code Athena, and builds on a previous implementation of the dynamics of charged dust grains in the same code. To demonstrate the performance of this coagulation model, we study the variations in the grain size distribution of a single-sized population of dust with radius 0.05 $\mu$m inside several dust filaments formed during a 2D MHD simulation. We also consider a realistic dust distribution with sizes ranging from 50 \AA~to 0.25 $\mu$m and analyze both the variations in the size distribution for graphite and silicates, as well as of the far ultraviolet extinction curve. From the obtained results, we conclude that the methodology here presented, based on the MHD evolution of the equation of motion for a charged particle, is optimal for studying the coagulation of charged dust grains in a diffuse regime such as a molecular cloud envelope. We reveal a deep connection between alignment of dust grains by RAdiative torques (RATs) and MEchanical Torques (METs) and rotational disruption of grains introduced by Hoang et al. (2019). The disruption of grains happens if they have attractor points corresponding to high angular momentum (high-J). We introduce {\it fast disruption} for grains that are directly driven to the high-J attractor on a timescale of spin-up, and {\it slow disruption} for grains that are first moved to the low-J attractor and gradually transported to the high-J attractor by gas collisions. The enhancement of grain magnetic susceptibility via iron inclusions expands the parameter space for high-J attractors and increases percentage of grains experiencing the disruption. The increase in the magnitude of RATs or METs can increase the efficiency of fast disruption, but counter-intuitively, decreases the effect of slow disruption by forcing grains towards low-J attractors, whereas the increase in gas density accelerates disruption by faster transporting grains to the high-J attractor. We also show that disruption induced by RATs and METs depends on the angle between the magnetic field and the anisotropic flow. We find that pinwheel torques can increase the efficiency of {\it fast disruption} but may decrease the efficiency of {\it slow disruption} by delaying the transport of grains from the low-J to high-J attractors via gas collisions. The selective nature of the rotational disruption opens a possibility of observational testing of grain composition as well as physical processes of grain alignment., 32 pages, 14 figures. We compile observations of molecular gas contents and infrared-based star formation rates (SFRs) for 112 circumnuclear star forming regions, in order to re-investigate the form of the disk-averaged Schmidt surface density star formation law in starbursts. We then combine these results with total gas and SFR surface densities for 153 nearby non-starbursting disk galaxies from de los Reyes \& Kennicutt (2019), to investigate the properties of the combined star formation law, following Kennicutt (1998; K98). We confirm that the combined Schmidt law can be fitted with a single power law with slope $n = 1.5\pm0.05$ (including fitting method uncertainties), somewhat steeper than the value $n = 1.4\pm0.15$ found by K98. Fitting separate power laws to the non-starbursting and starburst galaxies, however, produces very different slopes ($n = 1.34\pm0.07$ and $0.98\pm0.07$, respectively), with a pronounced offset in the zeropoint ($\sim$0.6\,dex) of the starburst relation to higher SFR surface densities. This offset is seen even when a common conversion factor between CO intensity and molecular hydrogen surface density is applied, and is confirmed when disk surface densities of interstellar dust are used as proxies for gas measurements. Tests for possible systematic biases in the starburst data fail to uncover any spurious sources for such a large offset. We tentatively conclude that the global Schmidt law in galaxies, at least as it is conventionally measured, is bimodal or possibly multi-modal. Possible causes may include changes in the small-scale structure of the molecular ISM or the stellar initial mass function. Ice dust grains composed of water, methanol, and ethanol are successfully produced in a laboratory plasma experiment operating at astrophysically relevant temperatures. Both methanol- and ethanol-ice grains grow in an elongated and branched way similar to water-ice grains formed in a plasma. The experiment reveals that methanol- and ethanol-ice grains grow faster, larger, and more branched (spikier) than water-ice grains. The observed growth features seem to be related to the fact that more source molecules and monomer grains can exist in the system at the same temperature. The observed morphology is in agreement with the characteristics of the diffusion-limited aggregation. We also find that larger and more branched ice grains form when the ambient gas pressure is low or the mass of the ambient gas is light, indicating that the aggregation of small grains is enhanced under these conditions.

Cluster analysis of presolar silicon carbide grains based on literature data for 12C/13C, 14N/15N, {\delta}30Si/28Si, and {\delta}29Si/28Si including or not inferred initial 26Al/27Al data, reveals nine clusters agreeing with previously defined grain types but also highlighting new divisions. Mainstream grains reside in three clusters probably representing different parent star metallicities. One of these clusters has a compact core, with a narrow range of composition, pointing to an enhanced production of SiC grains in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars with a narrow range of masses and metallicities. The addition of 26Al/27Al data highlights a cluster of mainstream grains, enriched in 15N and 26Al, which cannot be explained by current AGB models. We defined two AB grain clusters, one with 15N and 26Al excesses, and the other with 14N and smaller 26Al excesses, in agreement with recent studies. Their definition does not use the solar N isotopic ratio as a divider, and the contour of the 26Al-rich AB cluster identified in this study is in better agreement with core-collapse supernova models. We also found a cluster with a mixture of putative nova and AB grains, which may have formed in supernova or nova environments. X grains make up two clusters, having either strongly correlated Si isotopic ratios or deviating from the 2/3 slope line in the Si 3-isotope plot. Finally, most Y and Z grains are jointly clustered, suggesting that the previous use of 12C/13C= 100 as a divider for Y grains was arbitrary. Our results show that cluster analysis is a powerful tool to interpret the data in light of stellar evolution and nucleosynthesis modelling and highlight the need of more multi-element isotopic data for better classification., Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures and 1 table

Dust properties within a galaxy are known to change from the diffuse medium to dense clouds due to increased local gas density. However, the question of whether dust properties change with redshift remains elusive. In this paper, using the fact that the mean radiation intensity of the interstellar medium (ISM) of star-forming galaxies increases with redshift, we show that dust properties should change due to increasing efficiency of rotational disruption by radiative torques, an effect named RAdiative Torque Disruption (RATD). We first show that, due to RATD, the size distribution of interstellar dust varies with redshift, such as dust grains become smaller at higher $z$. We model the extinction curves and find that the curve becomes steeper with increasing redshift. The ratio of total-to-selective extinction, $R_{V}$, decreases with redshift and achieves low values of $R_{V}\sim 1.5-2.5$ for grains having a composite structure. We also find that dust properties change with the local gas density due to RATD, but the change is dominated by the radiation field for the diffuse ISM. The low values of $R_{V}$ implied by RATD of interstellar dust could reproduce anomalous dust extinction observed toward type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC)-like extinction curves with a steep far-UV rise toward high-z galaxies. Fluctuations in $R_{V}$ due to interstellar turbulence and varying radiation intensity may resolve the tension in measurements of the Hubble constant using SNe Ia. We present a synthesis of the astronomical observations constraining the wavelength-dependent extinction, emission, and polarization from interstellar dust from UV to microwave wavelengths on diffuse Galactic sightlines. Representative solid phase abundances for those sightlines are also derived. Given the sensitive new observations of polarized dust emission provided by the Planck satellite, we place particular emphasis on dust polarimetry, including continuum polarized extinction, polarization in the carbonaceous and silicate spectroscopic features, the wavelength-dependent polarization fraction of the dust emission, and the connection between optical polarized extinction and far-infrared polarized emission. Quantum chemical cluster calculations show that reactions of C$^+$ with HCN or HNC embedded in the surface of an icy grain mantle can account for the formation of a recently detected molecule, glycolonitrile, which is considered to be an important precursor to ribonucleic compounds. Reactions of cations deposited on ice mantles with minimal kinetic energy have been found theoretically to result in previously unknown pathways to significant organic compounds in protostellar systems and the interstellar medium. In density functional theory cluster calculations involving up to 24H$_2$O, C$^+$ reacts consistently with HCN embedded in ice to yield the neutral HOCHNC radical with no barrier, along with H$_3$O+ as a byproduct. If HOCHNC then reacts with H, three species can be formed: HOCH$_2$CN (isocyanomethanol), HOCH$_2$CN (glycolonitrile), and HOCHNCH. For the C$^+$ + HNC reaction on ice, the HOCHCN and H$_2$OCCN radicals form as intermediates, the first of which is another direct precursor to glycolonitrile via H addition. Models of interstellar dust alignment assume that dust grains are elongated, but none of these models explain why dust grains should be elongated. On the other hand, models of interstellar dust grain growth assume that dust grains are spherical and not elongated. We show that when dusty plasma effects and the dipole moment of water molecules are together taken into account, ice grains in interstellar space should be prolate ellipsoids and not spheres. Dusty plasma analysis shows that an ice grain is charged to a negative potential that has magnitude nearly equal to that of the electron temperature. Several different mechanisms causing deviation from sphericity are identified; these mechanisms involve the interaction of the dipole moment of water molecules with electric fields associated with ice grain charging. These mechanisms include the focusing of water molecule trajectories, the migration of water molecules in a quasi-liquid layer on the grain surface toward regions where the electric field is strongest, the enhancement of this migration by the bombardment of energetic protons that gain energy upon falling into the ice grain negative potential, and mutual repulsion by electric charges having the same sign. The aspect ratio is established shortly after the ice grain is formed, and then is maintained as the grain grows.

We present new Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) observations towards NGC 4725 B, a discrete, compact, optically-faint region within the star-forming disk of the nearby galaxy NGC 4725 that exhibits strong anomalous microwave emission (AME). These new ALMA data include continuum observations centered at 92, 133, 203, and 221 GHz accompanied by spectral observations of the $^{12}$CO ($J=2\rightarrow1$) line. NGC 4725 B is detected in the continuum at all frequencies, although the detection at 203 GHz is marginal. While molecular gas is not detected at the exact location of NGC 4725 B, there is molecular gas in the immediate vicinity (i.e., $\lesssim 100$ pc) along with associated diffuse 8 $\mu$m emission. When combined with existing Very Large Array continuum data at 1.5, 3, 5.5, 9, 14, 22, 33, and 44 GHz, the spectrum is best fit by a combination of AME, synchrotron, and free-free emission that is free-free absorbed below $\sim6$ GHz. Given the strength of the AME, there is surprisingly no indication of millimeter dust emission associated with NGC 4725 B on $\lesssim$6\arcsec~spatial scales at the sensitivity of the ALMA interferometric data. Based on the properties of the nearest molecular gas complex and the inferred star formation rate, NGC 4725 B is consistent with being an extremely young ($\sim 3-5$ Myr) massive ($\lesssim 10^{5} M_{\odot}$) cluster that is undergoing active cluster feedback. However, the lack of millimeter thermal dust emission is difficult to reconcile with a spinning dust origin of the 30 GHz emission. We have observed the Class 0 protostellar source IRAS 16293-2422 A in the C17O and H2CS lines as well as the 1.3 mm dust continuum with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array at an angular resolution of ~0."1 (14 au). The continuum emission of the binary component, Source A, reveals the substructure consisting of 5 intensity peaks within 100 au from the protostar. The C17O emission mainly traces the circummultiple structure on a 300 au scale centered at the intensity centroid of the continuum, while it is very weak within the radius of 50 au from the centroid. The H2CS emission, in contrast, traces the rotating disk structure around one of the continuum peaks (A1). Thus, it seems that the rotation centroid of the circummultiple structure is slightly different from that of the disk around A1. We derive the rotation temperature by using the multiple lines of H2CS. As approaching to the protostar A1, the rotation temperature steeply rises up to 300 K or higher at the radius of 50 au from the protostar. It is likely due to a local accretion shock and/or the preferential protostellar heating of the transition zone from the circummultiple structure to the disk around A1. This position corresponds to the place where the organic molecular lines are reported to be enhanced. Since the rise of the rotation temperature of H2CS most likely represents the rise of the gas and dust temperatures, it would be related to the chemical characteristics of this prototypical hot corino., 75 pages, 25 figures

Recent surveys of protoplanetary disks show that substructure in dust thermal continuum emission maps is common in protoplanetary disks. These substructures, most prominently rings and gaps, shape and change the chemical and physical conditions of the disk, along with the dust size distributions. In this work, we use a thermochemical code to focus on the chemical evolution that is occurring within the gas-depleted gap and the dust-rich ring often observed behind it. The composition of these spatial locations are of great import, as the gas and ice-coated grains will end up being part of the atmospheres of gas giants and/or the seeds of rocky planets. Our models show that the dust temperature at the midplane of the gap increases, enough to produce local sublimation of key volatiles and pushing the molecular layer closer to the midplane, while it decreases in the dust-rich ring, causing a higher volatile deposition onto the dust grain surfaces. Further, the ring itself presents a freeze-out trap for volatiles in local flows powered by forming planets, becoming a site of localized volatile enhancement. Within the gas depleted gap, the line emission depends on several different parameters, such as: the depth of the gap in surface density, the location of the dust substructure, and the abundance of common gas tracers, such as CO. We observed the W51 high-mass star-forming complex with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array’s longest-baseline configurations, achieving an angular resolution of ∼20 mas, corresponding to a linear resolution of ∼100 au at D W51 = 5.4 kpc. The observed region contains three high-mass protostars in which the dust continuum emission at 1.3 mm is optically thick up to a radius ≲1000 au and has brightness temperatures ≳200 K. The high luminosity (≳104 L ⊙) in the absence of free–free emission suggests the presence of massive stars (M ≳ 20 M ⊙) at the earliest stages of their formation. Our continuum images reveal remarkably complex and filamentary structures arising from compact cores. Molecular emission shows no clear signs of rotation or infall on scales from 150 to 2000 au; we do not detect disks. The central sources drive young (t dyn ∼ 100 yr), fast (v ∼ 100 km s−1), powerful ( M ⊙ yr−1), collimated outflows. These outflows provide indirect evidence of accretion disks on scales r ≲ 100–500 au (depending on the object). The active outflows are connected to fossil flows that have different orientations on larger spatial scales, implying that the orientations of these small disks change over time. These results together support a variant of an accretion model for high-mass star formation in which massive protostars do not form a large, stable Keplerian disk during their early stages but instead accrete material from multiple massive flows with different angular momentum vectors. This scenario therefore contrasts with the simplified classic paradigm of a stable disk+jet system, which is the standard model for low-mass star formation, and provides experimental confirmation of a multidirectional and unsteady accretion model for massive star formation.

We study the interstellar medium in a sample of 27 high-redshift quasar host galaxies at z>6, using the [CII] 158um emission line and the underlying dust continuum observed at ~1kpc resolution with ALMA. By performing uv-plane spectral stacking of both the high and low spatial resolution data, we investigate the spatial and velocity extent of gas, and the size of the dust-emitting regions. We find that the average surface brightness profile of both the [CII] and the dust continuum emission can be described by a steep component within a radius of 2kpc, and a shallower component with a scale length of 2kpc, detected up to ~10kpc. The surface brightness of the extended emission drops below ~1% of the peak at radius of ~5kpc, beyond which it constitutes 10-20% of the total measured flux density. Although the central component of the dust continuum emission is more compact than that of the [CII] emission, the extended components have equivalent profiles. The observed extended components are consistent with those predicted by hydrodynamical simulations of galaxies with similar infrared luminosities, where the dust emission is powered by star formation. The [CII] spectrum measured in the mean uv-plane stacked data can be described by a single Gaussian, with no observable [CII] broad-line emission (velocities in excess of >500km/s), that would be indicative of outflows. Our findings suggest that we are probing the interstellar medium and associated star formation in the quasar host galaxies up to radii of 10kpc, whereas we find no evidence for halos or outflows., Comment: 32 pages, 20 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in ApJ

In the denser and colder ($\leq$20 K) regions of the interstellar medium (ISM), near-infrared observations have revealed the presence of sub-micron sized dust grains covered by several layers of H\textsubscript{2}O-dominated ices and dirtied by the presence of other volatile species. Whether a molecule is in the gas or solid-phase depends on its binding energy (BE) on ice surfaces. Thus, BEs are crucial parameters for the astrochemical models that aim to reproduce the observed evolution of the ISM chemistry. In general, BEs can be inferred either from experimental techniques or by theoretical computations. In this work, we present a reliable computational methodology to evaluate the BEs of a large set (21) of astrochemical relevant species. We considered different periodic surface models of both crystalline and amorphous nature to mimic the interstellar water ice mantles. Both models ensure that hydrogen bond cooperativity is fully taken into account at variance with the small ice cluster models. Density functional theory adopting both B3LYP-D3 and M06-2X functionals was used to predict the species/ice structure and their BE. As expected from the complexity of the ice surfaces, we found that each molecule can experience multiple BE values, which depend on its structure and position at the ice surface. A comparison of our computed data with literature data shows agreement in some cases and (large) differences in others. We discuss some astrophysical implications that show the importance of calculating BEs using more realistic interstellar ice surfaces to have reliable values for inclusion in the astrochemical models., 30 pages (including Appendix), 16 figures (including Appendix). The primary method for inferring the stellar mass ($M_*$) of a galaxy is through spectral energy distribution (SED) modeling. However, the technique rests on assumptions such as the galaxy star formation history and dust attenuation law that can severely impact the accuracy of derived physical properties from SED modeling. Here, we examine the effect that the assumed star formation history (SFH) has on the stellar properties inferred from SED fitting by ground truthing them against mock observations of high-resolution cosmological hydrodynamic galaxy formation simulations. Classically, SFHs are modeled with simplified parameterized functional forms, but these forms are unlikely to capture the true diversity of galaxy SFHs and may impose systematic biases with under-reported uncertainties on results. We demonstrate that flexible nonparametric star formation histories outperform traditional parametric forms in capturing variations in galaxy star formation histories, and as a result, lead to significantly improved stellar masses in SED fitting. We find a decrease in the average bias of 0.4 dex with a delayed-$\tau$ model to a bias of just under 0.05 dex for the nonparametric model. Similarly, using nonparametric star formation histories in SED fitting result in increased accuracy in recovered galaxy star formation rates (SFRs) and stellar ages., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

Amide molecules produced in space could play a key role in the formation of biomolecules on a young planetary object. However, the formation and chemical network of amide molecules in space is not well understood. In this work, ALMA observations are used to study a number of amide(-like) molecules toward the high-mass star-forming region NGC 6334I. The first detections of cyanamide (NH$_{2}$CN), acetamide (CH$_{3}$C(O)NH$_{2}$) and N-methylformamide (CH$_{3}$NHCHO) are presented for this source. These are combined with analyses of isocyanic acid (HNCO) and formamide (NH$_{2}$CHO) and a tentative detection of urea (carbamide; NH$_{2}$C(O)NH$_{2}$). Abundance correlations show that most amides are likely formed in related reactions occurring in ices on interstellar dust grains in NGC 6334I. However, in an expanded sample of sources, large abundance variations are seen for NH$_{2}$CN that seem to depend on the source type, which suggests that the physical conditions within the source heavily influence the production of this species. The rich amide inventory of NGC 6334I strengthens the case that interstellar molecules can contribute to the emergence of biomolecules on planets., Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Through the magnetic braking and the launching of protostellar outflows, magnetic fields play a major role in the regulation of angular momentum in star formation, which directly impacts the formation and evolution of protoplanetary disks and binary systems. The aim of this paper is to quantify those phenomena in the presence of non-ideal magnetohydrodynamics effects, namely the Ohmic and ambipola r diffusion. We perform three-dimensional simulations of protostellar collapses varying the mass of the prestellar dense core, the thermal support (the $\alpha$ ratio) and the dust grain size-distribu tion. The mass mostly influences the magnetic braking in the pseudo-disk, while the thermal support impacts the accretion rate and hence the properties of the disk. Removing the grains smaller than 0. 1 $\mu$m in the Mathis, Rumpl, Nordsieck (MRN) distribution enhances the ambipolar diffusion coefficient. Similarly to previous studies, we find that this change in the distribution reduces the magnet ic braking with an impact on the disk. The outflow is also significantly weakened. In either case, the magnetic braking largely dominates the outflow as a process to remove the angular momentum from t he disk. Finally, we report a large ionic precursor to the outflow with velocities of several km s$^{-1}$, which may be observable., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures, Accepted in ApJ

Detailed magnetic field structure of the dense core SL42 (CrA-E) in the Corona Australis molecular cloud complex was investigated based on near-infrared polarimetric observations of background stars to measure dichroically polarized light produced by magnetically aligned dust grains. The magnetic fields in and around SL42 were mapped using 206 stars and curved magnetic fields were identified. On the basis of simple hourglass (parabolic) magnetic field modeling, the magnetic axis of the core on the plane of sky was estimated to be $40^{\circ} \pm 3^{\circ}$. The plane-of-sky magnetic field strength of SL42 was found to be $22.4 \pm 13.9$ $��$G. Taking into account the effects of thermal/turbulent pressure and the plane-of-sky magnetic field component, the critical mass of SL42 was obtained to be $M_{\rm cr} = 21.2 \pm 6.6$ M$_{\odot}$, which is close to the observed core mass of $M_{\rm core} \approx 20$ M$_{\odot}$. We thus conclude that SL42 is in a condition close to the critical state if the magnetic fields lie near the plane of the sky. Since there is a very low luminosity object (VeLLO) toward the center of SL42, it is unlikely this core is in a highly subcritical condition (i.e., magnetic inclination angle significantly deviated from the plane of sky). The core probably started to collapse from a nearly kinematically critical state. We discuss possible relations between different constituents of interstellar clouds, such as gas atoms (Fe i), simple molecular species (CH, CN), and the carriers of the puzzling diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs 5780, 5797, 5850 A) as well as dust grains. We exemplify that abundances of carriers of these spectral features, revealed by the Doppler components, may be astonishingly poorly related to each other. Spectra of interstellar clouds seem to be sensitive to the changes of the environmental parameters such as density, temperature, and irradiation from nearby stars. The diffuse bands' carriers likely do not occupy the same volumes with CH, CN, or Fe i and/or are much less sensitive to the processes related to the formation/destruction of these species.

Coagulation of dust aggregates plays an important role in the formation of planets and is of key importance to the evolution of protoplanetary disks (PPDs). Characteristics of dust, such as the diversity of particle size, porosity, charge, and the manner in which dust couples to turbulent gas, affect the collision outcome and the rate of dust growth. Here we present a numerical model of the evolution of the dust population within a PPD which incorporates all of these effects. The probability that any two particles collide depends on the particle charge, cross-sectional area and their relative velocity. The actual collision outcome is determined by a detailed collision model which takes into account the aggregate morphology, trajectory, orientation, and electrostatic forces acting between charged grains. The data obtained in this research reveal the characteristics of dust populations in different environments at the end of the hit-and-stick growth, which establishes the foundation for the onset of the next growth stage where bouncing, mass transfer and fragmentation become important. For a given level of turbulence, neutral and weakly charged particles collide more frequently and grow faster than highly charged particles. However, highly charged particles grow to a larger size before reaching the bouncing barrier, and exhibit a "Runaway" growth, in which a few large particles grow quickly by accreting smaller particles while the rest of the population grows very slowly. In general, highly charged aggregates have a more compact structure and are comprised of larger monomers than neutral/weakly charged aggregates. The differences in the particle structure/composition not only affect the threshold velocities for bouncing and fragmentation, but also change the scattering and absorption opacity of dust, influencing the appearance of PPDs.

Population synthesis models of actively accreting super-massive black holes (or active galactic nuclei -- AGN) predict a large fraction that must grow behind dense, obscuring screens of gas and dust. Deep X-ray surveys are thought to have provided the most complete and unbiased samples of AGN, but there is strong observational evidence that a portion of the population of obscured AGN is being missed. In this paper we use a sample of AGN derived from the deepest X-ray survey to date, the Chandra 7Ms GOODS-South Survey, to investigate the nature of low flux X-ray sources. We make full use of the extensive multi-wavelength coverage of the GOODS-South field, and cross-match our objects with wavelengths from the Radio to the IR. We find the low X-ray flux AGN in our sample have X-ray luminosities that indicate low-luminosity AGN classification, while their radio, infrared and optical counterparts indicate moderate to powerful AGN classification. We find the predicted column densities is on average an order of magnitude higher than the calculated column densities via X-ray detections for X-ray faint sources. We interpret our results as evidence of obscured AGN disguising as low-luminosity AGN via their X-ray luminosities. When we compare the estimation of the obscured AGN space density with and without these objects, we find a difference of 40% in the lowest X-ray luminosity regime probed by our sample., Comment: 23 pages, 16 figures, Accepted to the Astrophysical Journal

13 pags., 12 figs., 2 tabs., Interstellar carbonaceous dust is mainly formed in the innermost regions of circumstellar envelopes around carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch stars (AGBs). In these highly chemically stratified regions, atomic and diatomic carbon, along with acetylene, are the most abundant species after H and CO. In a previous study, we addressed the chemistry of carbon (C and C) with H showing that acetylene and aliphatic species form efficiently in the dust formation region of carbon-rich AGBs whereas aromatics do not. Still, acetylene is known to be a key ingredient in the formation of linear polyacetylenic chains, benzene, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), as shown by previous experiments. However, these experiments have not considered the chemistry of carbon (C and C) with CH. In this work, by employing a sufficient amount of acetylene, we investigate its gas-phase interaction with atomic and diatomic carbon. We show that the chemistry involved produces linear polyacetylenic chains, benzene, and other PAHs, which are observed with high abundances in the early evolutionary phase of planetary nebulae. More importantly, we have found a nonnegligible amount of pure and hydrogenated carbon clusters as well as aromatics with aliphatic substitutions, both being a direct consequence of the addition of atomic carbon. The incorporation of alkyl substituents into aromatics can be rationalized by a mechanism involving hydrogen abstraction followed by methyl addition. A galaxy-galaxy merger and the subsequent triggering of starburst activity are fundamental processes linked to the morphological transformation of galaxies and the evolution of star formation across the history of the Universe. Both nuclear and disk-wide starbursts are assumed to occur during the merger process. However, quantifying both nuclear and disk-wide star formation activity is non-trivial because the nuclear starburst is dusty in the most active merging starburst galaxies. This paper presents a new approach to this problem: combining hydrogen recombination lines in optical, millimeter, and free-free emission. Using NGC~3256 as a case study, H$\beta$, H40$\alpha$, and free-free emissions are investigated using the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer at the Very Large Telescope of the European Southern Observatory (MUSE/VLT) and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The H$\beta$ image obtained by MUSE identifies star-forming regions outside the nuclear regions, suggesting a disk-wide starburst. In contrast, the H40$\alpha$ image obtained by ALMA identifies a nuclear starburst where optical lines are undetected due to dust extinction ($A_{\rm V}\sim25$). Combining both MUSE and ALMA observations, we conclude that the total SFR is $49\pm2~M_{\odot}$~yr$^{-1}$ and the contributions from nuclear and disk-wide starbursts are $\sim34~\%$ and $\sim66~\%$, respectively. This suggests the dominance of disk-wide star formation in NGC~3256. In addition, pixel-by-pixel analyses for disk-wide star-forming regions suggest that shock gas tracers (e.g., CH$_3$OH) are enhanced where gas depletion time ($\tau_{\rm gas}$=$M_{\rm gas}/SFR$) is long. This possibly means that merger-induced shocks regulate disk-wide star formation activities., Comment: APJ accepted

The formation and growth of refractory matter on pre-existing interstellar dust grain surfaces was studied experimentally by annealing neon-ice matrices in which potential precursors of silicate grains (Mg and Fe atoms, SiO and SiO$_2$ molecules) and of solid carbon (C$_n$ molecules, $n$ = 2-10) were initially isolated. Other molecules, mainly O$_3$, CO, CO$_2$, C$_3$O, and H$_2$O, were embedded at the same time in the matrices. The annealing procedure caused the cold dopants to diffuse and interact in the neon ice. Monitoring the procedure in situ with infrared spectroscopy revealed the disappearance of the silicon oxide and carbon molecules at temperatures lower than 13 K, and the rise of the Si-O stretching band of silicates. Ex situ electron microscopy confirmed the formation of silicate grains and showed that their structure was amorphous. It also showed that amorphous carbon matter was formed simultaneously next to the silicate grains, the two materials being chemically separated. The results of the experiments support the hypothesis that grains of complex silicates and of carbonaceous materials are re-formed in the cold ISM, as suggested by astronomical observations and evolution models of cosmic dust masses. Moreover, they show that the potential precursors of one material do not combine with those of the other at cryogenic temperatures, providing us with a clue as to the separation of silicates and carbon in interstellar grains., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We present VLT/XSHOOTER rest-frame UV-optical spectra of 10 Hot Dust-Obscured Galaxies (Hot DOGs) at $z\sim2$ to investigate AGN diagnostics and to assess the presence and effect of ionized gas outflows. Most Hot DOGs in this sample are narrow-line dominated AGN (type 1.8 or higher), and have higher Balmer decrements than typical type 2 quasars. Almost all (8/9) sources show evidence for ionized gas outflows in the form of broad and blueshifted [O III] profiles, and some sources have such profiles in H$\alpha$ (5/7) or [O II] (3/6). Combined with the literature, these results support additional sources of obscuration beyond the simple torus invoked by AGN unification models. Outflow rates derived from the broad [O III] line ($\rm \gtrsim10^{3}\,M_{\odot}\,yr^{-1}$) are greater than the black hole accretion and star formation rates, with feedback efficiencies ($\sim0.1-1\%$) consistent with negative feedback to the host galaxy's star formation in merger-driven quasar activity scenarios. We find the broad emission lines in luminous, obscured quasars are often better explained by outflows within the narrow line region, and caution that black hole mass estimates for such sources in the literature may have substantial uncertainty. The state-of-the-art geometry models of stars/dust suggest that dust attenuation toward nebular regions ($A_{V,gas}$) is always larger than that of stellar regions ($A_{V,star}$). Utilizing the newly released integral field spectroscopic data from the MaNGA survey, we investigate whether and how the $A_{V,star}/A_{V,gas}$ ratio varies from subgalactic to galactic scales. On a subgalactic scale, we report a stronger correlation between $A_{V,star}$ and $A_{V,gas}$ for more active HII regions. The local $A_{V,star}/A_{V,gas}$ is found to have moderate nonlinear correlations with three tracers of diffuse ionized gas (DIG), as well as indicators of gas-phase metallicity and ionization. The DIG regions tend to have larger $A_{V,star}/A_{V,gas}$ compared to classic HII regions excited by young OB stars. Metal-poor regions with a higher ionized level suffer much less nebular attenuation and thus have larger $A_{V,star}/A_{V,gas}$ ratios. A low-$A_{V,gas}$ and high-$A_{V,star}/A_{V,gas}$ sequence, which can be resolved into DIG-dominated and metal-poor regions, on the three BPT diagrams is found. Based on these observations, we suggest that besides the geometry of stars/dust, local physical conditions such as metallicity and ionized level also play an important role in determining the $A_{V,star}/A_{V,gas}$. On a galactic scale, the global $A_{V,star}/A_{V,gas}$ ratio has strong correlations with stellar mass ($M_*$), moderate correlations with SFR and metallicity, and weak correlations with inclination and specific SFR. Galaxies with larger $M_*$ and higher SFR that are more metal-rich tend to have smaller $A_{V,star}/A_{V,gas}$ ratios. Such correlations form a decreasing trend of $A_{V,star}/A_{V,gas}$ along the star-forming main sequence and mass-metallicity relation.
