1. Stellar-reddening-based Extinction Maps for Cosmological Applications

Abstract

Cosmological surveys must correct their observations for the reddening of extragalactic objects by Galactic dust. Existing dust maps, however, have been found to have spatial correlations with the large-scale structure of the Universe. Errors in extinction maps can propagate systematic biases into samples of dereddened extragalactic objects and into cosmological measurements such as correlation functions between foreground lenses and background objects and the primordial non-gaussianity parameter $f_{NL}$. Emission-based maps are contaminated by the cosmic infrared background, while maps inferred from stellar-reddenings suffer from imperfect removal of quasars and galaxies from stellar catalogs. Thus, stellar-reddening based maps using catalogs without extragalactic objects offer a promising path to making dust maps with minimal correlations with large-scale structure. We present two high-latitude integrated extinction maps based on stellar reddenings, with a point spread function of full-width half-maximum 6.1' and 15'. We employ a strict selection of catalog objects to filter out galaxies and quasars and measure the spatial correlation of our extinction maps with extragalactic structure. Our galactic extinction maps have reduced spatial correlation with large scale structure relative to most existing stellar-reddening based and emission-based extinction maps., 21 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

We analyze clustering measurements of BOSS galaxies using a simulation-based emulator of two-point statistics. We focus on the monopole and quadrupole of the redshift-space correlation function, and the projected correlation function, at scales of $0.1\sim60~h^{-1}$Mpc. Although our simulations are based on $w$CDM with general relativity (GR), we include a scaling parameter of the halo velocity field, $\gamma_f$, defined as the amplitude of the halo velocity field relative to the GR prediction. We divide the BOSS data into three redshift bins. After marginalizing over other cosmological parameters, galaxy bias parameters, and the velocity scaling parameter, we find $f\sigma_{8}(z=0.25) = 0.413\pm0.031$, $f\sigma_{8}(z=0.4) = 0.470\pm0.026$ and $f\sigma_{8}(z=0.55) = 0.396\pm0.022$. Compared with Planck observations using a flat $\Lambda$CDM model, our results are lower by $1.9\sigma$, $0.3\sigma$ and $3.4\sigma$ respectively. These results are consistent with other recent simulation-based results at non-linear scales, including weak lensing measurements of BOSS LOWZ galaxies, two-point clustering of eBOSS LRGs, and an independent clustering analysis of BOSS LOWZ. All these results are generally consistent with a combination of $\gamma_f^{1/2}\sigma_8\approx 0.75$. We note, however, that the BOSS data is well fit assuming GR, i.e. $\gamma_f=1$. We cannot rule out an unknown systematic error in the galaxy bias model at non-linear scales, but near-future data and modeling will enhance our understanding of the galaxy--halo connection, and provide a strong test of new physics beyond the standard model., Comment: 30 pages, 23 figures and 4 tables; ApJ accepted, updated to the match the accepted version

We use large simulations of Lyman-Alpha Emitters with different fractions of ionized intergalactic medium to quantify the clustering of Ly$\alpha$ emitters as measured by the Void Probability function (VPF), and how it evolves under different ionization scenarios. We quantify how well we might be able to distinguish between these scenarios with a deep spectroscopic survey using the future Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. Since Roman will be able to carry out blind spectroscopic surveys of Ly$\alpha$ emitters continuously between $7 3-4\sigma$ at several redshifts between $75-8\sigma$) across the epoch of reionization, and would yield a detailed history of the reionization of the IGM and its effect on Lyman-$\alpha$ Emitter clustering., Comment: 19 total pages, 7 total figures, appendix with 3 additional figures

4. Magnetic Misalignment of Interstellar Dust Filaments

Abstract

We present evidence for scale-independent misalignment of interstellar dust filaments and magnetic fields. We estimate the misalignment by comparing millimeter-wave dust-polarization measurements from Planck with filamentary structures identified in neutral-hydrogen (HI) measurements from HI4PI. We find that the misalignment angle displays a scale independence (harmonic coherence) for features larger than the HI4PI beam width ($16.2'$). We additionally find a spatial coherence on angular scales of $\mathcal{O}(1^\circ)$. We present several misalignment estimators formed from the auto- and cross-spectra of dust-polarization and HI-based maps, and we also introduce a map-space estimator. Applied to large regions of the high-Galactic-latitude sky, we find a global misalignment angle of $\sim 2^\circ$, which is robust to a variety of masking choices. By dividing the sky into small regions, we show that the misalignment angle correlates with the parity-violating $TB$ cross-spectrum measured in the Planck dust maps. The misalignment paradigm also predicts a dust $EB$ signal, which is of relevance in the search for cosmic birefringence but as yet undetected; the measurements of $EB$ are noisier than of $TB$, and our correlations of $EB$ with misalignment angle are found to be weaker and less robust to masking choices. We also introduce an HI-based dust-polarization template constructed from the Hessian matrix of the HI intensity, which is found to correlate more strongly than previous templates with Planck dust $B$ modes., Comment: 31 pages, 18 figures

Abstract

Based on independent shear measurements using the DECaLS/DR8 imaging data, we measure the weak lensing signals around isolated central galaxies (ICGs) from SDSS/DR7 at $z\sim0.1$. The projected stellar mass density profiles of surrounding satellite galaxies are further deduced, using photometric sources from the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey (pDR3). The signals of ICGs $+$ their extended stellar halos are taken from Wang et al.(2021). All measurements are compared with predictions by the Illustris-TNG300-1 simulation. We find, overall, a good agreement between observation and TNG300. In particular, a correction to the stellar mass of massive observed ICGs is applied based on the calibration of He et al.(2013), which brings a much better agreement with TNG300 predicted lensing signals at $\log_{10}M_\ast/M_\odot>11.1$. In real observation, red ICGs are hosted by more massive dark matter halos, have more satellites and more extended stellar halos than blue ICGs at fixed stellar mass. However, in TNG300 there are more satellites around blue ICGs at fixed stellar mass, and the outer stellar halos of red and blue ICGs are similar. The stellar halos of TNG galaxies are more extended compared with real observed galaxies, especially for blue ICGs with $\log_{10}M_\ast/M_\odot>10.8$. We find the same trend for TNG100 galaxies and for true halo central galaxies. The tensions between TNG and real galaxies might indicate that satellite disruptions are stronger in TNG. In both TNG300 and observation, satellites approximately trace the underlying dark matter distribution beyond $0.1R_{200}$, but the fraction of total stellar mass in TNG300 does not show the same radial distribution as real galaxies., accepted by ApJ, comments welcome

Abstract

The Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) is an untargeted spectroscopic survey that aims to measure the expansion rate of the Universe at $z \sim 2.4$ to 1% precision for both $H(z)$ and $D_A(z)$. HETDEX is in the process of mapping in excess of one million Lyman Alpha emitting (LAE) galaxies and a similar number of lower-z galaxies as a tracer of the large-scale structure. The success of the measurement is predicated on the post-observation separation of galaxies with Ly$\alpha$ emission from the lower-$z$ interloping galaxies, primarily [OII], with low contamination and high recovery rates. The Emission Line eXplorer (ELiXer) is the principal classification tool for HETDEX, providing a tunable balance between contamination and completeness as dictated by science needs. By combining multiple selection criteria, ELiXer improves upon the 20 Angstrom rest-frame equivalent width cut commonly used to distinguish LAEs from lower-$z$ [OII] emitting galaxies. Despite a spectral resolving power, R $\sim800$, that cannot resolve the [OII] doublet, we demonstrate the ability to distinguish LAEs from foreground galaxies with 98.1% accuracy. We estimate a contamination rate of Ly$\alpha$ by [OII] of 1.2% and a Ly$\alpha$ recovery rate of 99.1% using the default ELiXer configuration. Abstract

The stellar initial mass function (IMF) is expressed by $\phi(m) \propto m^{-\alpha}$ with the slope $\alpha$, and known as the poorly-constrained but very important function in studies of star and galaxy formation. There are no sensible observational constraints on the IMF slopes beyond Milky Way and nearby galaxies. Here we combine two sets of observational results, 1) cosmic densities of core-collapse supernova explosion (CCSNe) rates and 2) cosmic far ultraviolet radiation (and infrared re-radiation) densities, which are sensitive to massive ($\simeq 8-50 \,{\rm M}_\odot$) and moderately massive ($\simeq 2.5-7 \,{\rm M}_\odot$) stars, respectively, and constrain the IMF slope at $m>1\,{\rm M}_\odot$ with a freedom of redshift evolution. Although no redshift evolution is identified beyond the uncertainties, we find that the cosmic average IMF slope at $z=0$ is $\alpha=1.8-3.2$ at the 95 % confidence level that is comparable with the Salpeter IMF, $\alpha=2.35$, which marks the first constraint on the cosmic average IMF. We show a forecast for the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope supernova survey that will provide significantly strong constraints on the IMF slope with $\delta \alpha\simeq 0.5$ over $z=0-2$. Moreover, as for an independent IMF probe instead of 1), we suggest to use diffuse supernovae neutrino background (DSNB), relic neutrinos from CCSNe. We expect that the Hyper-Kamiokande neutrino observations over 20 years will improve the constraints on the IMF slope and the redshift evolution significantly better than those obtained today, if the systematic uncertainties of DSNB production physics are reduced in the future numerical simulations., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, published in ApJ

8. Radius-dependent Spin Transition of Dark Matter Halos

Abstract

A numerical detection of the radius-dependent spin transition of dark matter halos is reported. Analyzing the data from the IllustrisTNG simulations, we measure the halo spin vectors at several inner radii within the virial boundaries and investigate their orientations in the principal frames of the tidal and velocity shear fields, called the Tweb and Vweb, respectively. The halo spin vectors in the high-mass section exhibit a transition from the Tweb intermediate to major principal axes as they are measured at more inner radii, which holds for both of the dark matter and baryonic components. The radius threshold at which the transition occurs depends on the smoothing scale, $R_{f}$, becoming larger as $R_{f}$ decreases. For the case of the Vweb, the occurrence of the radius-dependent spin transition is witnessed only when $R_{f}\ge 1\, h^{-1}$Mpc. Repeating the same analysis but with the vorticity vectors, we reveal a critical difference from the spins. The vorticity vectors are always perpendicular to the Tweb (Vweb) major principal axes, regardless of $R_{f}$, which indicates that the halo inner spins are not strongly affected by the generation of vorticity. It is also shown that the halo spins, as well as the Tweb (Vweb) principal axes, have more directional coherence over a wide range of radial distances in the regions where the vorticity vectors have higher magnitudes. Abstract

We characterize Galactic dust filaments by correlating BICEP/Keck and Planck data with polarization templates based on neutral hydrogen (H I) observations. Dust polarization is important for both our understanding of astrophysical processes in the interstellar medium (ISM) and the search for primordial gravitational waves in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). In the diffuse ISM, H I is strongly correlated with the dust and partly organized into filaments that are aligned with the local magnetic field. We analyze the deep BICEP/Keck data at 95, 150, and 220 GHz, over the low-column-density region of sky where BICEP/Keck has set the best limits on primordial gravitational waves. We separate the H I emission into distinct velocity components and detect dust polarization correlated with the local Galactic H I but not with the H I associated with Magellanic Stream I. We present a robust, multifrequency detection of polarized dust emission correlated with the filamentary H I morphology template down to 95 GHz. For assessing its utility for foreground cleaning, we report that the H I morphology template correlates in B modes at a $\sim$10-65$\%$ level over the multipole range $20 < \ell < 200$ with the BICEP/Keck maps, which contain contributions from dust, CMB, and noise components. We measure the spectral index of the filamentary dust component spectral energy distribution to be $β= 1.54 \pm 0.13$. We find no evidence for decorrelation in this region between the filaments and the rest of the dust field or from the inclusion of dust associated with the intermediate velocity H I. Abstract

$R$-process enhanced stars with [Eu/Fe]$\geq+0.7$ (so-called $r$-II stars) are believed to have formed in an extremely neutron-rich environment in which a rare astrophysical event (e.g., a neutron star merger) occurred. This scenario is supported by the existence of an ultra-faint dwarf galaxy, Reticulum~II, where most of the stars are highly enhanced in $r$-process elements. In this scenario, some small fraction of dwarf galaxies around the Milky Way were $r$ enhanced. When each $r$-enhanced dwarf galaxy accreted to the Milky Way, it deposited many $r$-II stars in the Galactic halo with similar orbital actions. To search for the remnants of the $r$-enhanced systems, we analyzed the distribution of the orbital actions of $N=161$ $r$-II stars in the Solar neighborhood by using the Gaia EDR3 data. Since the observational uncertainty is not negligible, we applied a newly-developed {\it greedy optimistic clustering method} to the orbital actions of our sample stars. We found six clusters of $r$-II stars that have similar orbits and chemistry, one of which is a new discovery. Given the apparent phase-mixed orbits of the member stars, we interpret that these clusters are good candidates for remnants of completely disrupted $r$-enhanced dwarf galaxies that merged with the ancient Milky Way., Main text 21 pages, References 3 pages, Appendix 16 pages. 11 figures. 3 tables. 11. Estimation of the Full-sky Power Spectrum between Intermediate and Large Angular Scales from Partial-sky CMB Anisotropies Using an Artificial Neural Network

Abstract

Reliable extraction of cosmological information from observed cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps may require removal of strongly foreground contaminated regions from the analysis. In this article, we employ an artificial neural network (ANN) to predict the full sky CMB angular power spectrum between intermediate to large angular scales from the partial sky spectrum obtained from masked CMB temperature anisotropy map. We use a simple ANN architecture with one hidden layer containing $895$ neurons. Using $1.2 \times 10^{5}$ training samples of full sky and corresponding partial sky CMB angular power spectra at Healpix pixel resolution parameter $N_{side} = 256$, we show that predicted spectrum by our ANN agrees well with the target spectrum at each realization for the multipole range $2 \leq l \leq 512$. The predicted spectra are statistically unbiased and they preserve the cosmic variance accurately. Statistically, the differences between the mean predicted and underlying theoretical spectra are within approximately $3\sigma$. Moreover, the probability densities obtained from predicted angular power spectra agree very well with those obtained from `actual' full sky CMB angular power spectra for each multipole. Interestingly, our work shows that the significant correlations in input cut-sky spectra, due to mode-mode coupling introduced on the partial sky, are effectively removed since the ANN learns the hidden pattern between the partial sky and full sky spectra preserving the entire statistical properties. The excellent agreement of statistical properties between the predicted and the ground-truth demonstrates the importance of using artificial intelligence systems in cosmological analysis more widely., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures

Abstract

Although weak lensing (WL) is a powerful method to estimate a galaxy cluster mass without any dynamical assumptions, a model bias can arise when the cluster density profile departs from the assumed model profile. In a merging system, the bias is expected to become most severe because the constituent halos undergo significant structural changes. In this study, we investigate WL mass bias in binary cluster mergers using a suite of idealized hydrodynamical simulations. Realistic WL shear catalogs are generated by matching the source galaxy properties, such as intrinsic shape dispersion, measurement noise, source densities, etc., to those from Subaru and {\it Hubble Space Telescope} observations. We find that, with the typical mass-concentration ($M$-$c$) relation and the Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) profile, the halo mass bias depends on the time since the first pericenter passage and increases with the mass of the companion cluster. The time evolution of the mass bias is similar to that of the concentration, indicating that, to first order, the mass bias is modulated by the concentration change. For a collision between two $\sim10^{15}~M_{\odot}$ clusters, the maximum bias amounts to $\sim60\%$. This suggests that previous WL studies may have significantly overestimated the mass of the clusters in some of the most massive mergers. Finally, we apply our results to three merger cases: Abell 2034, MACS J1752.0+4440, and ZwCl 1856.8+6616, and report their mass biases at the observed epoch, as well as their pre-merger masses, utilizing their merger shock locations as tracers of the merger phases., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, accepted to ApJ

Abstract

Using the novel semi-numerical code for reionization AMBER, we model the patchy kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect by directly specifying the reionization history with the redshift midpoint $z_\mathrm{mid}$, duration $\Delta_\mathrm{z}$, and asymmetry $A_\mathrm{z}$. We further control the ionizing sources and radiation through the minimum halo mass $M_\mathrm{h}$ and the radiation mean free path $\lambda_\mathrm{mfp}$. AMBER reproduces the free electron number density and the patchy kSZ power spectrum of radiation-hydrodynamic simulations at the target resolution ($1\,{\rm Mpc}/h$) with matched reionization parameters. With a suite of $(2\,{\rm Gpc}/h)^3$ simulations using AMBER, we first constrain the redshift midpoint $6.08$ is needed to ensure an end of reionization before $z=5.5$). We show that constraints on the asymmetry require $\sim 0.1\,\mu k^2$ measurement accuracy at multipoles other than $\ell=3000$. Finally, we find that the amplitude and shape of the kSZ spectrum are only weakly sensitive to $M_h$ under a fixed reionization history and radiation mean-free path., Comment: 20 pages, 17 Figures; comments welcome

14. Calibrating Cosmological Simulations with Implicit Likelihood Inference Using Galaxy Growth Observables

Abstract

In a novel approach employing implicit likelihood inference (ILI), also known as likelihood-free inference, we calibrate the parameters of cosmological hydrodynamic simulations against observations, which has previously been unfeasible due to the high computational cost of these simulations. For computational efficiency, we train neural networks as emulators on ~1000 cosmological simulations from the CAMELS project to estimate simulated observables, taking as input the cosmological and astrophysical parameters, and use these emulators as surrogates to the cosmological simulations. Using the cosmic star formation rate density (SFRD) and, separately, stellar mass functions (SMFs) at different redshifts, we perform ILI on selected cosmological and astrophysical parameters (Omega_m, sigma_8, stellar wind feedback, and kinetic black hole feedback) and obtain full 6-dimensional posterior distributions. In the performance test, the ILI from the emulated SFRD (SMFs) can recover the target observables with a relative error of 0.17% (0.4%). We find that degeneracies exist between the parameters inferred from the emulated SFRD, confirmed with new full cosmological simulations. We also find that the SMFs can break the degeneracy in the SFRD, which indicates that the SMFs provide complementary constraints for the parameters. Further, we find that the parameter combination inferred from an observationally-inferred SFRD reproduces the target observed SFRD very well, whereas, in the case of the SMFs, the inferred and observed SMFs show significant discrepancies that indicate potential limitations of the current galaxy formation modeling and calibration framework, and/or systematic differences and inconsistencies between observations of the stellar mass function., This is the revised version from the reviewer's report (submitted to ApJ)

Abstract

The motion of cosmic strings in the universe leads to the generation of wakes behind them. We study magnetized wakes of cosmic strings moving in the post recombination plasma. We show that magnetic reconnection can occur in the post shock region. Since the width of the cosmic string wake is very small, the reconnection occurs over a very short lengthscale. The reconnection leads to a large amount of kinetic energy being released in the post shock region of the cosmic string wake. This enhances the kinetic energy released during the reconnection. We make a rudimentary estimate of the kinetic energy released by the magnetic reconnection in cosmic strings wakes and show that it can account for low energy Gamma Ray Bursts (GRB) in the post recombination era., Comment: 11 pages 1 figure

Abstract

We perform a rigorous cosmology analysis on simulated type Ia supernovae (SN~Ia) and evaluate the improvement from including photometric host-galaxy redshifts compared to using only the "zspec" subset with spectroscopic redshifts from the host or SN. We use the Deep Drilling Fields (~50 deg^2) from the Photometric LSST Astronomical Time-Series Classification Challenge (PLaSTiCC), in combination with a low-z sample based on Data Challenge2 (DC2). The analysis includes light curve fitting to standardize the SN brightness, a high-statistics simulation to obtain a bias-corrected Hubble diagram, a statistical+systematics covariance matrix including calibration and photo-z uncertainties, and cosmology fitting with a prior from the cosmic microwave background. Compared to using the zspec subset, including events with SN+host photo-z results in i) more precise distances for z>0.5, ii) a Hubble diagram that extends 0.3 further in redshift, and iii) a 50 % increase in the Dark Energy Task Force figure of merit (FoM) based on the w0-wa CDM model. Analyzing 25 simulated data samples, the average bias on w0 and wa is consistent with zero. The host photo-z systematic of 0.01 reduces FoM by only 2 % because i) most z, 13 pages, 9 figures, 7 tables. Submitted to ApJ

17. Prospects for 21 cm Galaxy Cross-correlations with HERA and the Roman High-latitude Survey

Abstract

The cross-correlation between the 21 cm field and the galaxy distribution is a potential probe of the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). The 21 cm signal traces neutral gas in the intergalactic medium and, on large spatial scales, this should be anti-correlated with the high-redshift galaxy distribution which partly sources and tracks the ionized gas. In the near future, interferometers such as the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA) are projected to provide extremely sensitive measurements of the 21 cm power spectrum. At the same time, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (Roman) will produce the most extensive catalog to date of bright galaxies from the EoR. Using semi-numeric simulations of reionization, we explore the prospects for measuring the cross-power spectrum between the 21 cm and galaxy fields during the EoR. We forecast a 14$\sigma$ detection between HERA and Roman, assuming an overlapping survey area of 500 deg$^2$, redshift uncertainties of $\sigma_z = 0.01$ (as expected for the high-latitude spectroscopic survey of Ly$\alpha$-emitting galaxies), and an effective Ly$\alpha$ emitter duty cycle of $f_\mathrm{LAE} = 0.1$. Thus the HERA-Roman cross-power spectrum may be used to help verify 21 cm detections from HERA. Abstract

We identify the intrinsic dependence of star formation quenching on a variety of galactic and environmental parameters, utilizing a machine learning approach with Random Forest classification. We have previously demonstrated the power of this technique to isolate causality, not mere correlation, in complex astronomical data. First, we analyze three cosmological hydrodynamical simulations (Eagle, Illustris, and IllustrisTNG), selecting snapshots spanning the bulk of cosmic history from comic noon ($z \sim 2$) to the present epoch, with stellar masses in the range $9 < \log(M_*/M_{\odot}) < 12$. In the simulations, black hole mass is unanimously found to be the most predictive parameter of central galaxy quenching at all epochs. Perhaps surprisingly, black hole accretion rate (and hence the bolometric luminosity of active galactic nuclei, AGN) is found to be of little predictive power over quenching. This theoretical result is important for observational studies of galaxy quenching as it cautions against using the current AGN state of a galaxy as a useful proxy for the cumulative impact of AGN feedback on a galactic system. The latter is traced by black hole mass not AGN luminosity. Additionally, we explore a sub-set of 'observable' parameters, which can be readily measured in extant wide-field galaxy surveys targeting $z = 0 - 2$, at $9 < \log(M_*/M_{\odot}) < 12$. All three simulations predict that in lieu of black hole mass, the stellar gravitational potential will outperform the other parameters in predicting quenching. Abstract

With Cosmicflows-4, distances are compiled for 55,877 galaxies gathered into 38,065 groups. Eight methodologies are employed, with the largest numbers coming from the correlations between the photometric and kinematic properties of spiral galaxies (TF) and elliptical galaxies (FP). Supernovae that arise from degenerate progenitors (type Ia Sne) are an important overlapping component. Smaller contributions come from distance estimates from the surface brightness fluctuations of elliptical galaxies and the luminosities and expansion rates of core collapse supernovae (SNII). Cepheid period-luminosity relation and tip of the red giant branch observations founded on local stellar parallax measurements along with the geometric maser distance to NGC 4258 provide the absolute scaling of distances. The assembly of galaxies into groups is an important feature of the study in facilitating overlaps between methodologies. Merging between multiple contributions within a methodology and between methodologies is carried out with Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo procedures. The final assembly of distances is compatible with a value of the Hubble constant of $H_0=74.6$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ with the small statistical error of $\pm 0.8$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ but a large potential systematic error of ~3 km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$. Peculiar velocities can be inferred from the measured distances. Of the 11,416 sources studied in 3.75 hr of on-sky exposure time, 7438 are M31 sources with well-measured radial velocities. The observations reveal intricate coherent kinematic structure in the positions and velocities of individual stars: streams, wedges, and chevrons. While hints of coherent structures have been previously detected in M31, this is the first time they have been seen with such detail and clarity in a galaxy beyond the Milky Way. We find clear kinematic evidence for shell structures in the Giant Stellar Stream, the Northeast Shelf, and Western Shelf regions. The kinematics are remarkably similar to the predictions of dynamical models constructed to explain the spatial morphology of the inner halo. The results are consistent with the interpretation that much of the substructure in the inner halo of M31 is produced by a single galactic immigration event 1–2 Gyr ago. Significant numbers of metal-rich stars ([Fe/H] > − 0.5) are present in all of the detected substructures, suggesting that the immigrating galaxy had an extended star formation history. We also investigate the ability of the shells and Giant Stellar Stream to constrain the gravitational potential of M31, and estimate the mass within a projected radius of 125 kpc to be ${\mathrm{log}}_{10}\,{M}_{\mathrm{NFW}}(\lt 125\,\mathrm{kpc})/{M}_{\odot }={11.80}_{-0.10}^{+0.12}$. Abstract

The Mg II 2796, 2803 doublet has been suggested to be a useful indirect indicator for the escape of Ly-alpha and Lyman continuum (LyC) photons in local star-forming galaxies. However, studies to date have focused on small samples of galaxies with strong Mg II or strong LyC emission. Here we present the first study of Mg II probing a large dynamic range of galaxy properties, using newly obtained high signal-to-noise, moderate-resolution spectra of Mg II for a sample of 34 galaxies selected from the Low-redshift Lyman Continuum Survey. We show that the galaxies in our sample have Mg II profiles ranging from strong emission to P-Cygni profiles, and to pure absorption. We find there is a significant trend (with a possibility of spurious correlations of ~ 2%) that galaxies detected as strong LyC Emitters (LCEs) also show larger equivalent widths of Mg II emission, and non-LCEs tend to show evidence of more scattering and absorption features in Mg II We then find Mg II strongly correlates with Ly-alpha in both equivalent width and escape fraction, regardless of whether the emission or absorption dominates the Mg II profiles. Furthermore, we present that, for galaxies categorized as Mg II emitters (MgE), one can adopt the information of Mg II, metallicity, and dust to estimate the escape fraction of LyC within a factor of 3. Abstract

In this paper, we forecast the expected detection rates and redshift distributions of gravitationally lensed gravitational waves (GWs) from three different mass distributions of primordial black holes (PBHs) and two stellar formation models of astrophysical black holes (ABHs) in the context of DECi-hertz Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory (DECIGO) and it's smaller scale version B-DECIGO. It suggests that DECIGO will be able to detect $10^4-10^5$ GW signals from such binary black holes (BBHs) each year and the event rate distributions for PBHs will differ from those for ABHs due to their different merger rate with respect to redshift. The large number of event rates make $5-100$ detections of lensed GW signals being possible. After considering the gravitational lensing effect, the difference between the detection rates and distributions for PBHs and ABHs will be more significant. Abstract

The angular momentum of galaxies (galaxy spin) contains rich information about the initial condition of the Universe, yet it is challenging to efficiently measure the spin direction for the tremendous amount of galaxies that are being mapped by the ongoing and forthcoming cosmological surveys. We present a machine learning based classifier for the Z-wise vs S-wise spirals, which can help to break the degeneracy in the galaxy spin direction measurement. The proposed Chirality Equivariant Residual Network (CE-ResNet) is manifestly equivariant under a reflection of the input image, which guarantees that there is no inherent asymmetry between the Z-wise and S-wise probability estimators. We train the model with Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) images, with the training labels given by the Galaxy Zoo 1 (GZ1) project. A combination of data augmentation tricks are used during the training, making the model more robust to be applied to other surveys. We find a $\sim\!30\%$ increase of both types of spirals when Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) images are used for classification, due to the better imaging quality of DESI. Abstract

Cosmic reionization was the last major phase transition of hydrogen from neutral to highly ionized in the intergalactic medium (IGM). Current observations show that the IGM is significantly neutral at $z>7$, and largely ionized by $z\sim5.5$. However, most methods to measure the IGM neutral fraction are highly model-dependent, and are limited to when the volume-averaged neutral fraction of the IGM is either relatively low ($\bar{x}_{\rm HI} \lesssim 10^{-3}$) or close to unity ($\bar{x}_{\rm HI}\sim 1$). In particular, the neutral fraction evolution of the IGM at the critical redshift range of $z=6-7$ is poorly constrained. Abstract

Primordial non-Gaussianity (PNG) is one of the most powerful probes of the early Universe and measurements of the large scale structure of the Universe have the potential to transform our understanding of this area. However relating measurements of the late time Universe to the primordial perturbations is challenging due to the non-linear processes that govern the evolution of the Universe. To help address this issue we release a large suite of N-body simulations containing four types of PNG: \textsc{quijote-png}. These simulations were designed to augment the \textsc{quijote} suite of simulations that explored the impact of various cosmological parameters on large scale structure observables. Using these simulations we investigate how much information on PNG can be extracted by extending power spectrum and bispectrum measurements beyond the perturbative regime at $z=0.0$. This is the first joint analysis of the PNG and cosmological information content accessible with power spectrum and bispectrum measurements of the non-linear scales. We find that the constraining power improves significantly up to $k_\mathrm{max}\approx 0.3 h/{\rm Mpc}$, with diminishing returns beyond as the statistical probes signal-to-noise ratios saturate. This saturation emphasizes the importance of accurately modelling all the contributions to the covariance matrix. Abstract

We investigate the potential of using a sample of very high-redshift ($2\lesssim z \lesssim6$) (VHZ) Type Ia supernovae (SNe~Ia) attainable by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) on constraining cosmological parameters. At such high redshifts, the age of the universe is young enough that the VHZ SNIa sample comprises the very first SNe~Ia of the universe, with progenitors among the very first generation of low mass stars that the universe has made. We show that the VHZ SNe~Ia can be used to disentangle systematic effects due to the luminosity distance evolution with redshifts intrinsic to SNIa standardization. Assuming that the systematic evolution can be described by a linear or logarithmic formula, we found that the coefficients of this dependence can be determined accurately and decoupled from cosmological models. Systematic evolution as large as 0.15 mag and 0.45 mag out to $z=5$ can be robustly separated from popular cosmological models for the linear and logarithmic evolution, respectively. The VHZ SNe~Ia will lay the foundation for quantifying the systematic redshift evolution of SNIa luminosity distance scales. When combined with SNIa surveys at comparatively lower redshifts, the VHZ SNe~Ia allow for a precise measurement of the history of the expansion of the universe from $z\sim 0$ to the epoch approaching reionization., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. In this paper, we calibrate the Amati relation (the $E_{\rm p}$-${E}_{\rm iso}$ correlation) of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in a cosmology-independent way. By using Gaussian process to reconstruct the smoothed luminosity distance from the Pantheon type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) sample, we utilize the reconstructed results to calibrate the $E_{\rm p}$-${E}_{\rm iso}$ correlation with the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method and construct a Hubble diagram with the A220 GRB data, in which there are A118 GRB data with the higher qualities appropriate for cosmological purposes. Abstract

Generating large volume hydrodynamical simulations for cosmological observables is a computationally demanding task necessary for next generation observations. In this work, we construct a novel fully convolutional variational auto-encoder (VAE) to synthesize hydrodynamic fields conditioned on dark matter fields from N-body simulations. After training the model on a single hydrodynamical simulation, we are able to probabilistically map new dark matter only simulations to corresponding full hydrodynamical outputs. By sampling over the latent space of our VAE, we can generate posterior samples and study the variance of the mapping. We find that our reconstructed field provides an accurate representation of the target hydrodynamical fields as well as a reasonable variance estimates. This approach has promise for the rapid generation of mocks as well as for implementation in a full Bayesian inverse model of observed data., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

We introduce $\texttt{GWFAST}$, a novel Fisher-matrix code for gravitational-wave studies, tuned toward third-generation gravitational-wave detectors such as Einstein Telescope (ET) and Cosmic Explorer (CE). We use it to perform a comprehensive study of the capabilities of ET alone, and of a network made by ET and two CE detectors, as well as to provide forecasts for the forthcoming O4 run of the LVK collaboration. We consider binary neutron stars, binary black holes and neutron star-black hole binaries, and compute basic metrics such as the distribution of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the accuracy in the reconstruction of various parameters (including distance, sky localization, masses, spins and, for neutron stars, tidal deformabilities), and the redshift distribution of the detections for different thresholds in SNR and different levels of accuracy in localization and distance measurement. We examine the expected distribution and properties of `golden events', with especially large values of the SNR. We also pay special attention to the dependence of the results on astrophysical uncertainties and on various technical details (such as choice of waveforms, or the threshold in SNR), and we compare with other Fisher codes in the literature. In a companion paper we discuss the technical aspects of the code. Abstract

Observations of galaxy-scale strong gravitational lensing (SGL) systems have enabled unique tests of nonlinear departures from general relativity (GR) on the galactic and supergalactic scales. One of the most important cases of such tests is constraints on the gravitational slip between two scalar gravitational potentials. In this paper, we use a newly compiled sample of strong gravitational lenses to test the validity of GR, focusing on the screening effects on the apparent positions of lensed sources relative to the GR predictions. This is the first simultaneous measurement of the Post-Newtonian (PN) parameter ($\gamma_{PN}$) and the screening radius ($\Lambda$) without any assumptions about the contents of the Universe. Our results suggest that the measured PPN is marginally consistent with GR ($\gamma_{PN}=1$) with increasing screening radius ($\Lambda = 10-300 $kpc), although the choice of lens models may have a significant influence on the final measurements. Based on a well-defined sample of 5000 simulated strong lenses from the forthcoming LSST, our methodology will provide a strong extragalactic test of GR with an accuracy of 0.5\%, assessed up to scales of $\Lambda \sim 300$ kpc. For the current and future observations of available SGL systems, there is no noticeable evidence indicating some specific cutoff scales on kpc-Mpc scales, beyond which new gravitational degrees of freedom are expressed., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

From 1,000 hydrodynamic simulations of the CAMELS project, each with a different value of the cosmological and astrophysical parameters, we generate 15,000 gas temperature maps. We use a state-of-the-art deep convolutional neural network to recover missing data from those maps. We mimic the missing data by applying regular and irregular binary masks that cover either $15\%$ or $30\%$ of the area of each map. We quantify the reliability of our results using two summary statistics: 1) the distance between the probability density functions (pdf), estimated using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) test, and 2) the 2D power spectrum. Abstract

Detecting cosmological signals from the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) requires high-precision calibration to isolate the cosmological signals from foreground emission. In radio interferometery, perturbed primary beams of antenna elements can disrupt the precise calibration, which results in contaminating the foreground-free region, or the EoR window, in the cylindrically averaged power spectrum. For Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA), we simulate and characterize the perturbed primary beams induced by feed motions such as axial, lateral, and tilting motions, above the 14-meter dish. To understand the effect of the perturbed beams, visibility measurements are modeled with two different foreground components, point sources and diffuse sources, and we find different feed motions present a different reaction to each type of sky source. HERA's redundant-baseline calibration in the presence of non-redundant antenna beams due to feed motions introduces chromatic errors in gain solutions, which produces foreground power leakage into the EoR window. The observed leakage from vertical feed motions comes predominately from point sources around zenith. Furthermore, the observed leakage from horizontal and tilting feed motion comes predominately from the diffuse components near the horizon. Mitigation of chromatic gain errors will be necessary for robust detection of the EoR signals with minimal foreground bias, and this will be discussed in the subsequent paper., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract

This paper presents the gravitational-wave measurement of the Hubble constant (H 0) using the detections from the first and second observing runs of the Advanced LIGO and Virgo detector network. The presence of the transient electromagnetic counterpart of the binary neutron star GW170817 led to the first standard-siren measurement of H 0. Here we additionally use binary black hole detections in conjunction with galaxy catalogs and report a joint measurement. Our updated measurement is H 0 = km s-1 Mpc-1 (68.3% of the highest density posterior interval with a flat-in-log prior) which is an improvement by a factor of 1.04 (about 4%) over the GW170817-only value of km s-1 Mpc-1. A significant additional contribution currently comes from GW170814, a loud and well-localized detection from a part of the sky thoroughly covered by the Dark Energy Survey. With numerous detections anticipated over the upcoming years, an exhaustive understanding of other systematic effects are also going to become increasingly important. Abstract

CMB-S4---the next-generation ground-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment---is set to significantly advance the sensitivity of CMB measurements and enhance our understanding of the origin and evolution of the Universe, from the highest energies at the dawn of time through the growth of structure to the present day. Among the science cases pursued with CMB-S4, the quest for detecting primordial gravitational waves is a central driver of the experimental design. This work details the development of a forecasting framework that includes a power-spectrum-based semi-analytic projection tool, targeted explicitly towards optimizing constraints on the tensor-to-scalar ratio, $r$, in the presence of Galactic foregrounds and gravitational lensing of the CMB. This framework is unique in its direct use of information from the achieved performance of current Stage 2--3 CMB experiments to robustly forecast the science reach of upcoming CMB-polarization endeavors. The methodology allows for rapid iteration over experimental configurations and offers a flexible way to optimize the design of future experiments given a desired scientific goal. To form a closed-loop process, we couple this semi-analytic tool with map-based validation studies, which allow for the injection of additional complexity and verification of our forecasts with several independent analysis methods. We document multiple rounds of forecasts for CMB-S4 using this process and the resulting establishment of the current reference design of the primordial gravitational-wave component of the Stage-4 experiment, optimized to achieve our science goals of detecting primordial gravitational waves for $r > 0.003$ at greater than $5��$, or, in the absence of a detection, of reaching an upper limit of $r < 0.001$ at $95\%$ CL., 24 pages, 8 figures, 9 tables, submitted to ApJ. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1907.04473

Abstract

We report an improved measurement of the degree-scale cosmic microwave background $B$-mode angular-power spectrum over 670 square-degree sky area at 150 GHz with POLARBEAR. In the original analysis of the data, errors in the angle measurement of the continuously rotating half-wave plate, a polarization modulator, caused significant data loss. By introducing an angle-correction algorithm, the data volume is increased by a factor of 1.8. We report a new analysis using the larger data set. We find the measured $B$-mode spectrum is consistent with the $\Lambda$CDM model with Galactic dust foregrounds. We estimate the contamination of the foreground by cross-correlating our data and Planck 143, 217, and 353 GHz measurements, where its spectrum is modeled as a power law in angular scale and a modified blackbody in frequency. Abstract

Strong gravitational lensing provides unique opportunities to investigate the mass distribution at the cores of galaxy clusters and to study high redshift galaxies. Using $94$ strong lensing models of $74$ cluster fields from the \textit{Hubble} Frontier Fields (HFF), Reionization Lensing Cluster Survey (RELICS), and Sloan Giant Arcs Survey (SGAS), modeled with three parametric approaches, we evaluate the lensing strength of each cluster (area with $|\mu|\geq3$ for $z_s=9$). We assess how large scale mass, projected inner core mass, and the inner slope of the projected mass density profile relate to lensing strength. While we do not identify a strong correlation between lensing strength and large scale mass, we reveal that the inner slope ($50$ kpc~$\leq r \leq~200$ kpc) of the projected mass density profile is indicative of lensing strength and can set an upper bound on the possible lensing strength of a cluster. We find that the effective Einstein area correlates with lensing strength, and that a large ($\gtrsim 30^{''}0$) radial extent of lensing evidence is a strong indicator of a powerful lens. Several fluctuation studies on the near-infrared extragalactic background light (EBL) find an excess power at tens of arcminute scales ($\ell\sim10^3$). Emission from the intra-halo light (IHL) has been proposed as a possible explanation for the excess signal. In this work, we investigate the emission from the integrated galaxy light (IGL) and IHL in the power spectrum of EBL fluctuations using the simulated galaxy catalog MICECAT. We find that at $\ell\sim10^3$, the one-halo clustering from satellite galaxies has comparable power to the two-halo term in the IGL power spectrum. In some previous EBL analyses, the IGL model assumed a small one-halo clustering signal, which may result in overestimating the IHL contribution to the EBL. We also investigate the dependence of the IGL$+$IHL power spectrum on the IHL distribution as a function of redshift and halo mass, and the spatial profile within the halo. Our forecast suggests that the upcoming SPHEREx deep field survey can distinguish different IHL models considered in this work with high significance. Abstract

The eROSITA X-ray telescope, launched in 2019, is predicted to observe roughly 100,000 galaxy clusters. Follow-up observations of these clusters from Chandra, for example, will be needed to resolve outstanding questions about galaxy cluster physics. Deep Chandra cluster observations are expensive and follow-up of every eROSITA cluster is infeasible, therefore, objects chosen for follow-up must be chosen with care. To address this, we have developed an algorithm for predicting longer duration, background-free observations based on mock eROSITA observations. We make use of the hydrodynamic cosmological simulation Magneticum, have simulated eROSITA instrument conditions using SIXTE, and have applied a novel convolutional neural network to output a deep Chandra-like "super observation" of each cluster in our simulation sample. Any follow-up merit assessment tool should be designed with a specific use case in mind; our model produces observations that accurately and precisely reproduce the cluster morphology, which is a critical ingredient for determining cluster dynamical state and core type. Our model will advance our understanding of galaxy clusters by improving follow-up selection and demonstrates that image-to-image deep learning algorithms are a viable method for simulating realistic follow-up observations., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables. Abstract

The calibration of the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) in the $I$-band has a direct role in determinations of the Hubble constant, a subject of recent interest due to the discrepancy between direct and indirect estimates of its value. We present a maximum likelihood (ML) method designed to obtain an independent calibration of the brightness of TRGB using $Gaia$ parallaxes from the Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) of Milky Way field Giants at high Galactic latitude. We adopt simple parameterizations for the Milky Way stellar luminosity function and density law and and optimize the likelihood of the observed sample as a function of those parameters. Using parameters to partially constrain the luminosity function from other galaxies similar to the Milky Way for which high quality TRGB data are available, we find values of the TRGB magnitude of $ M_I^{TRGB} = -3.91 \pm 0.05 $ (stat) $ \pm 0.09 $ (sys) mag, where the systematic uncertainty covers the range of shape parameters found in our Milky Way sample and in reference galaxies. While APASS Data Release 9 all-sky photometry is insufficient to provide a reliable constraint on the shape of the Milky Way luminosity function, we estimate that the photometry from $Gaia$ Data Release 3 (mid-2022) will allow better constraints on the shape, and lower statistical uncertainties on the tip by a factor of 3. Abstract

We present MMT spectroscopic observations of two massive galaxy cluster candidates at redshift $z\sim0.07$ that show extended and diffuse X-ray emission in the ROSAT All Sky Survey (RASS) images. The targets were selected from a previous catalog of 303 newly-identified cluster candidates with the similar properties using the intra-cluster medium emission. Using the new MMT Hectospec data and SDSS archival spectra, we identify a number of member galaxies for the two targets and confirm that they are galaxy clusters at $z=0.079$ and 0.067, respectively. The size of the two clusters, calculated from the distribution of the member galaxies, is roughly 2 Mpc in radius. We estimate cluster masses using three methods based on their galaxy number overdensities, galaxy velocity dispersions, and X-ray emission. The overdensity-based masses are $(6\sim8) \rm \times10^{14}\ M_\odot$, comparable to the masses of large clusters at low redshift. The masses derived from velocity dispersions are significantly lower, likely due to their diffuse and low concentration features. Our result suggests the existence of a population of large clusters with very diffuse X-ray emission that have been missed by most previous searches using the RASS images. If most of the 303 candidates in the previous catalog are confirmed to be real clusters, this may help to reduce the discrepancy of cosmological results between the CMB and galaxy cluster measurements., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

Abstract

The integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect probes the decay rate ($DR$) of large scale gravitational potential and therefore provides unique constraint on dark energy (DE). However its constraining power is degraded by the ISW measurement, which relies on cross-correlating with the large scale structure (LSS) and suffers from uncertainties in galaxy bias and matter clustering. In combination with lensing-LSS cross-correlation, $DR$ can be isolated in a way free of uncertainties in galaxy bias and matter clustering. We applied this proposal to the combination of the DR8 galaxy catalogue of DESI imaging surveys and Planck cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps. We achieved the first $DR$ measurement, with a total significance of $3.2\sigma$. We verified the measurements at three redshift bins ($[0.2,0.4)$, $[0.4, 0.6)$, $[0.6,0.8]$), with two LSS tracers (the "low-density points" and the conventional galaxy positions). Despite its relatively low S/N, the addition of $DR$ significantly improves dark energy constraints, over SDSS baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) data alone or Pantheon supernovae (SN) compilation alone. For flat $w$CDM cosmology, the improvement in the precision of $\Omega_m$ is a factor of 1.8 over BAO and 1.5 over SN. For the DE equation of state $w$, the improvement factor is 1.3 over BAO and 1.4 over SN. These improvements demonstrate $DR$ as a useful cosmological probe, and therefore we advocate its usage in future cosmological analysis., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

The fluctuating Gunn-Peterson approximation (FGPA) is a commonly-used method to generate mock Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) forest absorption skewers at Cosmic Noon ($z\gtrsim 2$) from the matter-density field of $N$-body simulations without running expensive hydrodynamical simulations. Motivated by recent developments in 3D IGM tomography observations as well as matter density field reconstruction techniques applied to galaxy redshift samples at $z\sim 2$, we examine the possibility of observationally testing FGPA by directly examining the relationship between the Ly$\alpha$ transmission and the underlying matter density field. Specifically, we analyze the EAGLE, Illustris, IllustrisTNG and Nyx cosmological hydrodynamic simulations, that were run with different codes and sub-grid models. While the FGPA is an excellent description of the IGM in lower-density regions, the slope of the transmission-density distribution at higher densities is significantly affected by feedback processes causing the FGPA to break down in that regime. Even without added feedback, we find significant deviations caused by hydrodynamical effects arising from non-linear structure growth. We then proceed to make comparisons using realistic mock data assuming the sightline sampling and spectral properties of the recent CLAMATO survey, and find that it would be challenging to discern between the FGPA and hydrodynamical models with current data sets. However, the improved sightline sampling from future extremely large telescopes or large volumes from multiplexed spectroscopic surveys such as Subaru PFS should allow for stringent tests of the FGPA, and make it possible to detect the effect of galaxy feedback on the IGM., Comment: Accepted for publication by ApJ. 27 pages, 18 figures, 2 tables

We use machine learning techniques to classify galaxy merger stages, which can unveil physical processes that drive the star formation and active galactic nucleus (AGN) activities during galaxy interaction. The sample contains 4,690 galaxies from the integral field spectroscopy survey SDSS-IV MaNGA, and can be separated to 1,060 merging galaxies and 3630 non-merging or unclassified galaxies. For the merger sample, there are 468, 125, 293, and 174 galaxies in (1) incoming pair phase, (2) first pericentric passage phase, (3) aproaching or just passing the apocenter, and (4) final coalescence phase or post-mergers. With the information of projected separation, line-of-sight velocity difference, SDSS gri images, and MaNGA Ha velocity map, we are able to classify the mergers and their stages with good precision, which is the most important score to identify interacting galaxies. For the 2-phase classification (binary; non-merger and merger), the performance can be high (precision>0.90) with LGBMClassifier. We find that sample size can be increased by rotation, so the 5-phase classification (non-merger, 1, 2, 3, and 4 merger stages) can be also good (precision>0.85). The most important features come from SDSS gri images. The contribution from MaNGA Ha velocity map, projected separation, and line-of-sight velocity difference can further improve the performance by 0-20%. In other words, the image and the velocity information are sufficient to capture important features of galaxy interactions, and our results can apply to the entire MaNGA data as well as future all-sky surveys., accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract

We present HST photometry of 17 Cepheids in open clusters and their mean parallaxes from Gaia EDR3. These parallaxes are more precise than those from individual Cepheids (G300 stars per cluster. Cluster parallaxes also have smaller systematic uncertainty because their stars lie in the range (G>13 mag) where the Gaia parallax calibration is most comprehensive. Cepheid photometry employed in the period--luminosity relation was measured using the same instrument(WFC3) and filters(F555W,F814W,F160W) as extragalactic Cepheids in SNIa hosts. We find no evidence of residual parallax offset in this magnitude range, zp=-3+/-4 muas, consistent with Lindegren:2021b and most studies. The Cepheid luminosity (P=10d, solar-metallicity) in the HST near-infrared, Wesenheit system derived from the cluster sample is M_{H,1}^W=-5.902+/-0.025 and -5.890+/-0.018 mag with or without simultaneous determination of a parallax offset, respectively. These results are similar to measurements from field Cepheids, confirming the accuracy of the Gaia parallaxes over a broad range of magnitudes. The SH0ES distance ladder calibrated solely from this sample gives H_0=72.8+/-1.3 and H_0=73.2+/-1.1 km/s/Mpc with or without offset marginalization; combined with all anchors we find H_0=73.01+/-0.99 and 73.15+/-0.97, respectively, a 5% or 7% reduction in the uncertainty and a 5.3 sigma Hubble Tension relative to Planck+LambdaCDM. It appears increasingly difficult to reconcile two of the best measured cosmic scales, parallaxes from Gaia and the angular size of the acoustic scale of the CMB, using the simplest form of LambdaCDM to join the two., 12 pages, submitted to ApJ, comments welcome

Abstract

We train deep learning models on thousands of galaxy catalogues from the state-of-the-art hydrodynamic simulations of the CAMELS project to perform regression and inference. We employ Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), architectures designed to work with irregular and sparse data, like the distribution of galaxies in the Universe. We first show that GNNs can learn to compute the power spectrum of galaxy catalogues with a few percent accuracy. We then train GNNs to perform likelihood-free inference at the galaxy-field level. Our models are able to infer the value of $\Omega_{\rm m}$ with a $\sim12\%-13\%$ accuracy just from the positions of $\sim1000$ galaxies in a volume of $(25~h^{-1}{\rm Mpc})^3$ at $z=0$ while accounting for astrophysical uncertainties as modelled in CAMELS. Incorporating information from galaxy properties, such as stellar mass, stellar metallicity, and stellar radius, increases the accuracy to $4\%-8\%$. Our models are built to be translational and rotational invariant, and they can extract information from any scale larger than the minimum distance between two galaxies. We explore the redshift evolution of the dynamical properties of massive clusters and their brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) at $z < 2$ based on the IllustrisTNG-300 simulation. We select 270 massive clusters with $M_{200} < 10^{14}~{\rm M}_{\odot}$ at $z = 0$ and trace their progenitors based on merger trees. From 67 redshift snapshots covering $z < 2$, we compute the 3D subhalo velocity dispersion as a cluster velocity dispersion ($\sigma_{\rm cl}$). We also calculate the 3D stellar velocity dispersion of the BCGs ($\sigma_{\rm *,~BCG}$). Both $\sigma_{\rm cl}$ and $\sigma_{\rm *,~BCG}$ increase as universe ages. The BCG velocity dispersion grows more slowly than the cluster velocity dispersion. Furthermore, the redshift evolution of the BCG velocity dispersion shows dramatic changes at some redshifts resulting from dynamical interaction with neighboring galaxies (major mergers). We show that $\sigma_{\rm *,~BCG}$ is comparable with $\sigma_{\rm cl}$ at $z > 1$, offering an interesting observational test. The simulated redshift evolution of $\sigma_{\rm cl}$ and $\sigma_{\rm *,~BCG}$ generally agrees with an observed cluster sample for $z < 0.3$, but with large scatter. Abstract

We explore the effect of dust on the growth of seed black holes (BHs) in the early universe. Previous 1D radiation-hydrodynamic (RHD) simulations show that increased radiation pressure on dust further suppresses the accretion rate than the case for the chemically pristine gas. Using the Enzo+Moray code, we perform a suite of 3D RHD simulations of accreting BHs in a dusty interstellar medium (ISM). We use the modified Grackle cooling library to consider dust physics in its non-equilibrium chemistry. The BH goes through an early evolutionary phase, where ionizing BH radiation creates an oscillating HII region as it cycles between accretion and feedback. As the simulations proceed, dense cold gas accumulates outside the ionized region where inflow from the neutral medium meets the outflow driven by radiation pressure. In the late phase, high-density gas streams develop and break the quasi-spherical symmetry of the ionized region, rapidly boosting the accretion rate. The late phase is characterized by the coexistence of strong ionized outflows and fueling high-density gas inflows. The mean accretion rate increases with metallicity reaching a peak at Z$\sim$0.01-0.1$\,Z_\odot$, one order of magnitude higher than the one for pristine gas. However, as the metallicity approaches the solar abundance, the mean accretion rate drops as the radiation pressure becomes strong enough to drive out the high-density gas. Our results indicate that a dusty metal-poor ISM can accelerate the growth rate of BHs in the early universe, however, can stun its growth as the ISM is further enriched toward the solar abundance., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, 1 table, submitted to ApJ

Abstract

I explore the properties of "dark gaps" - regions in quasar absorption spectra without significant transmission - with several simulations from the Cosmic Reionization On Computers (CROC) project. CROC simulations in largest available boxes (120 cMpc) come close to matching both the distribution of mean opacities and the frequency of dark gaps, but alas not in the same model: the run that matches the mean opacities fails to contain enough dark gaps and vice versa.:( Never-the-less, the run that matches the dark gap distributions serves as a counter-example to claims in the literature that the dark gap statistics requires a late end to reionization - in that run reionization ends at z=6.7 (likely too early). While multiple factors contribute to the frequency of large dark gaps in the simulations, the primary factor that controls the overall shape of the dark gap distribution is the ionization level in voids - the lowest density regions produce the highest transmission spikes that terminate long gaps. As the result, the dark gap distribution correlates strongly with the fraction of the spectrum above the gap detection threshold, the observed distribution is matched by the simulation in which this fraction is 2%. Hence, the gap distribution by itself does not constrain the timing of reionization., Submitted to ApJ
