The intergalactic medium is expected to clump on scales down to $10^4-10^8$ M$_{\odot}$ before the onset of reionization. The impact of these small-scale structures on reionization is poorly understood despite the modern understanding that gas clumpiness limits the growth of H II regions. We use a suite of radiation-hydrodynamics simulations that capture the $\sim 10^4$ $M_\odot$ Jeans mass of unheated gas to study density fluctuations during reionization. Our simulations track the complex ionization and hydrodynamical response of gas in the wake of ionization fronts. The clumping factor of ionized gas (proportional to the recombination rate) rises to a peak value of $5-20$ approximately $\Delta t = 10$ Myr after ionization front passage, depending on the incident intensity, redshift, and degree to which the gas had been pre-heated by the first X-ray sources. The clumping factor reaches its relaxed value of $\approx 3$ by $\Delta t = 300$ Myr. The mean free path of Lyman-limit photons evolves in unison, being up to several times shorter in un-relaxed, recently reionized regions compared to those that were reionized much earlier. Assessing the impact of this response on the global reionizaton process, we find that un-relaxed gaseous structures boost the total number of recombinations by $\approx 50$ % and lead to spatial fluctuations in the mean free path that persist appreciably for several hundred million years after the completion of reionization., Comment: Matches published version

We present a catalog of physical properties for galaxies hosting active galactic nuclei (AGN) detected by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). By fitting broadband spectral energy distributions of sources in the WISE AGN Catalog (Assef et al. 2018) with empirical galaxy and AGN templates, we derive photometric redshifts, AGN bolometric luminosities, measures of AGN obscuration, host galaxy stellar masses, and host galaxy star formation rates (SFRs) for 695,273 WISE AGN. The wide-area nature of this catalog significantly augments the known number of obscured AGN out to redshifts of z~3 and will be useful for studies focused on AGN or their host galaxy physical properties. We first show that the most likely non-AGN contaminants are galaxies at redshifts of z=0.2-0.3, with relatively blue W1-W2 colors, and with high specific SFRs for which the dust continuum emission is elevated in the W2 filter. Toward increasingly lower redshifts, WISE AGN host galaxies have systematically lower specific SFRs, relative to those of normal star forming galaxies, likely due to decreased cold gas fractions and the time delay between global star formation and AGN triggering. Finally, WISE AGN obscuration is not strongly correlated with AGN bolometric luminosity but shows a significant negative correlation with Eddington ratio. This result is consistent with a version of the `receding torus' model in which the obscuring material is located within the supermassive black hole gravitational sphere of influence and the dust inner radius increases due to radiation pressure., 21 pages, 17 figures. We examine the impact of baryonic physics on the halo distribution in hydrodynamic simulations (Illustris, IllustrisTNG, and EAGLE), particularly with regards to how it differs from that in dark matter only (DMO) simulations. We find that, in general, DMO simulations produce halo mass functions (HMF) that are shifted to higher halo masses than their hydrodynamic counterparts, due to the lack of baryonic physics. However, the exact nature of this mass shift is a complex function of mass, halo definition, redshift, and larger-scale environment, and it also depends on the specifics of the baryonic physics implemented in the simulation. We present fitting formulae for the corrections one would need to apply to each DMO halo catalogue in order to reproduce the HMF found in its hydrodynamic counterpart. We provide these formulae for all three simulations, for five different halo definitions at redshifts 0, 1, and 2. Additionally, we explore the dependence on environment of this HMF discrepancy, and find that, in most cases, halos in low density environments are slightly more impacted by baryonic physics than halos in high density environments. We thus also provide environment-dependent mass correction formulae that can reproduce the conditional, as well as global, HMF. We show that our mass corrections also repair the large-scale clustering of halos, though the environment-dependent corrections are required to achieve an accuracy better than 2%. Finally, we examine the impact of baryonic physics on the halo mass - concentration relation, and find that its slope in hydrodynamic simulations is consistent with that in DMO simulations. PKS\,1351$-$018 at a redshift of $z=3.71$ is one of the most luminous, steady synchrotron sources with a luminosity $> 10^{47}$\,erg~s$^{-1}$. The synchrotron luminosity does not seem to vary by more than $\sim 25\%$ over 35 years. In order to appreciate this remarkable behavior, if it were at $z=0.5$, it would have a flux density at 15 GHz in a range of $110 - 137$\,Jy over 11 yrs. In spite of this steady behavior, two strong $\gamma$-ray flares $\lesssim 10^{49}$\,erg~s$^{-1}$ were detected in 2011 and 2016. There is blazar-like behavior coexisting with the steady behavior. This study is aimed at elucidating the dual nature of this source. We find that the radio source is extremely compact with a bright core and a steep spectrum secondary component, 12\,mas away, that appears to be constant in position and flux density in six epochs from 1995 to 2018. We estimate that a jet with a time averaged power of $(5.2 \pm 3.2) \times 10^{45}$\,erg~s$^{-1}$ terminates in this lobe that is advancing $\gtrsim 0.9 c$ at a deprojected distance of $1-3$\,kpc from the central engine. This is the rare case of a young ($\sim 6000$\,yr), very powerful radio source that is viewed a few degrees from the jet axis. We find evidence of a high velocity (4000\,km~s$^{-1}$), high ionization wind emanating form a luminous quasar. The young radio jet appears to experience modest bending as it navigates through the intense quasar environment., Comment: To appear in ApJ

The successive discoveries of binary merger events by Advanced LIGO-Virgo have been revealing the statistical properties of binary black hole (BBH) populations. A stochastic gravitational wave background (GWB) is a useful tool to probe the cosmological evolution of those compact mergers. In this paper, we study the upper bound on a GWB produced by BBH mergers, whose stellar progenitors dominate the reionization process at the cosmic dawn. Since early reionization by those progenitors yields a high optical depth of the universe inconsistent with the {\it Planck} measurements, the cumulative mass density is limited to $\rho_\star \lesssim 10^7~M_\odot~{\rm Mpc}^{-3}$. Even with this upper bound, the amplitude of a GWB owing to the high-$z$ BBH mergers is expected to be as high as $\Omega_{\rm gw}\simeq 1.48_{-1.27}^{+1.80}\times 10^{-9}$ at $f\simeq 25$ Hz, while their merger rate at the present-day is consistent or lower than the observed GW event rate. This level of GWB is detectable at the design sensitivity of Advanced LIGO-Virgo and would indicate a major contribution of the high-$z$ BBH population to the local GW events. The spectral index is expected to be substantially flatter than the canonical value of $\simeq 2/3$ generically produced by lower-redshift and less massive BBHs. Moreover, if their mass function is more top-heavy than in the local universe, the GWB spectrum is even more skewed toward lower frequencies, which would allow us to extract information on the mass function of merging BBHs at high redshifts., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Line intensity mapping (LIM) provides a unique and powerful means to probe cosmic structures by measuring the aggregate line emission from all galaxies across redshift. The method is complementary to conventional galaxy redshift surveys that are object-based and demand exquisite point-source sensitivity. The Tomographic Ionized-carbon Mapping Experiment (TIME) will measure the star formation rate (SFR) during cosmic reionization by observing the redshifted [CII] 158$\mu$m line ($6 \lesssim z \lesssim 9$) in the LIM regime. TIME will simultaneously study the abundance of molecular gas during the era of peak star formation by observing the rotational CO lines emitted by galaxies at $0.5 \lesssim z \lesssim 2$. We present the modeling framework that predicts the constraining power of TIME on a number of observables, including the line luminosity function, and the auto- and cross-correlation power spectra, including synergies with external galaxy tracers. Based on an optimized survey strategy and fiducial model parameters informed by existing observations, we forecast constraints on physical quantities relevant to reionization and galaxy evolution, such as the escape fraction of ionizing photons during reionization, the faint-end slope of the galaxy luminosity function at high redshift, and the cosmic molecular gas density at cosmic noon. We discuss how these constraints can advance our understanding of cosmological galaxy evolution at the two distinct cosmic epochs for TIME, starting in 2021, and how they could be improved in future phases of the experiment., Comment: 30 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present spectroscopic confirmation of two new massive galaxy protoclusters at $z=2.24\pm0.02$, BOSS1244 and BOSS1542, traced by groups of Coherently Strong Ly$\alpha$ Absorption (CoSLA) systems imprinted in the absorption spectra of a number of quasars from the SDSS III and identified as overdensities of narrowband-selected H$\alpha$ emitters (HAEs). Using MMT/MMIRS and LBT/LUCI near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, we confirm 46 and 36 HAEs in the BOSS1244 and BOSS1542 fields, respectively. BOSS1244 displays a South-West (SW) component at $z=2.230\pm0.002$ and another North-East (NE) component at $z=2.246\pm0.001$ with the line-of-sight velocity dispersions of $405\pm202$ km s$^{-1}$ and $377\pm99$ km s$^{-1}$, respectively. Interestingly, we find that the SW region of BOSS1244 contains two substructures in redshift space, likely merging to form a larger system. In contrast, BOSS1542 exhibits an extended filamentary structure with a low velocity dispersion of $247\pm32$ km s$^{-1}$ at $z=2.241\pm0.001$, providing a direct confirmation of a large-scale cosmic web in the early Universe. The galaxy overdensities $\delta_{\rm g}$ on the scale of 15 cMpc are $22.9\pm4.9$, $10.9\pm2.5$, and $20.5\pm3.9$ for the BOSS1244 SW, BOSS1244 NE, and BOSS1542 filament, respectively. They are the most overdense galaxy protoclusters ($\delta_{\rm g}>20$) discovered to date at $z>2$. These systems are expected to become virialized at $z\sim0$ with a total mass of $M_{\rm SW}=(1.59\pm0.20)\times10^{15}$ $M_{\odot}$, $M_{\rm NE} =(0.83\pm0.11)\times10^{15}$ $M_{\odot}$ and $M_{\rm filament}=(1.42\pm0.18)\times10^{15}$ $M_{\odot}$, respectively. We use the Cosmic Assembly Deep Near-infrared Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) data to study the relationship between quenching and the stellar mass surface density within the central radius of 1 kpc ($\Sigma_1$) of low-mass galaxies (stellar mass $M_* \lesssim 10^{9.5} M_\odot$) at $0.5 \leq z < 1.5$. Our sample is mass complete down to $\sim 10^9 M_\odot$ at $0.5 \leq z < 1.0$. We compare the mean $\Sigma_1$ of star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and quenched galaxies (QGs) at the same redshift and $M_*$. We find that low-mass QGs have higher $\Sigma_1$ than low-mass SFGs, similar to galaxies above $10^{10} M_\odot$. The difference of $\Sigma_1$ between QGs and SFGs increases slightly with $M_*$ at $M_* \lesssim 10^{10} M_\odot$ and decreases with $M_*$ at $M_* \gtrsim 10^{10} M_\odot$. The turnover mass is consistent with the mass where quenching mechanisms transition from internal to environmental quenching. At $0.5 \leq z < 1.0$, we find that the $\Sigma_1$ of galaxies increases by about 0.25 dex in the green valley (i.e., the transitioning region from star forming to fully quenched), regardless of their $M_*$. Using the observed specific star formation rate (sSFR) gradient in the literature as a constraint, we estimate that the quenching timescale (i.e., time spent in the transition) of low-mass galaxies is a few ($\sim4$) Gyrs at $0.5 \leq z < 1.0$. The mechanisms responsible for quenching need to gradually quench star formation in an outside-in way, i.e., preferentially ceasing star formation in outskirts of galaxies while maintaining their central star formation to increase $\Sigma_1$. An interesting and intriguing result is the similarity of the growth of $\Sigma_1$ in the green valley between low-mass and massive galaxies, which suggests that the role of internal processes in quenching low-mass galaxies is a question worthy of further investigation., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures. The NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (NED) is an impressive tool for finding near-exhaustive information on millions of astrophysical objects. Here, we outline a small systematic error that occurs in NED because a low-redshift approximation is used when making the correction from redshifts in the heliocentric frame to the cosmic microwave background (CMB) rest frame. It means that historically NED systematically misreported the values of CMB-frame redshifts by up to $\sim10^{-3}z$ (about 0.001 at redshift of 1). This is a systematic error, and therefore the impact on applications requiring precise redshifts has the potential to be significant -- for example, a systematic redshift error of $\sim10^{-4}$ at low redshift could resolve the Hubble tension. We have consulted with the NED team and they are updating the software to remove this systematic error so these corrections are accurate at all redshifts. We present new high-resolution (R~14,000) spectra of the two brightest HeII-transparent quasars in the far-UV (FUV) at z>3.5, HE2QSJ2311-1417 (z=3.70) and HE2QSJ1630+0435 (z=3.81), obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). In the predominantly saturated HeII absorption spectra, both sightlines show several isolated resolved (full width at half maximum FWHM>50 km/s) transmission spikes in HeII Ly$\alpha$ and HeII Ly$\beta$. The incidence of such spikes decreases with increasing redshift, but both sightlines show significant spikes at z>3.5, signaling the presence of fully ionized regions in the z>3.5 intergalactic medium (IGM). We employ an automated algorithm to compare the number of detected HeII transmission spikes to predictions from mock spectra created from the outputs of a cubic (100/h cMpc)^3 optically thin Nyx hydrodynamical simulation, assuming a range of UV background photoionization rates $\Gamma_\mathrm{HeII}$. From the incidence of Ly$\alpha$ and Ly$\beta$ transmission spikes we infer similar photoionization rates of $\Gamma_\mathrm{HeII}=2.0^{+0.6}_{-0.5}\times 10^{-15}$s$^{-1}$ at 3.513.5 along both lines of sight, our observations provide further evidence that HeII reionization had substantially progressed at these redshifts., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ following minor revision; 21 pages, 17 figures

In this paper, we study the sizes of quasar proximity zones with synthetic quasar absorption spectra obtained by post-processing a Cosmic Reionization On Computers (CROC) simulation. CROC simulations have both relatively large box sizes and high spacial resolution, allowing us to resolve Lyman limit systems, which are crucial for modeling the quasar absorption spectra. We find that before reionization most quasar proximity zone sizes grow steadily for $\sim 10$ Myr, while after reionization they grow rapidly but only for $\sim 0.1$ Myr. We also find a slow growth of $R_{\rm obs}$ with decreasing turn-on redshift. In addition, we find that $\sim 1-2\%$ of old quasars ($30$ Myr old) display extremely small proximity zone sizes ($, Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures, comments welcome!

We measure the average deflection of cosmic microwave background photons by quasars at $\langle z \rangle =1.7$. Our sample is selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to cover the redshift range $0.9\leq z\leq2.2$ with absolute i-band magnitudes of $M_i\leq-24$ (K-corrected to z=2). A stack of nearly 200,000 targets reveals an 8$\sigma$ detection of Planck's estimate of the lensing convergence towards the quasars. We fit the signal with a model comprising a Navarro-Frenk-White density profile and a 2-halo term accounting for correlated large scale structure, which dominates the observed signal. The best-fitting model is described by an average halo mass $\log_{10}(M_{\rm h}/h^{-1}M_\odot)=12.6\pm0.2$ and linear bias $b=2.7\pm0.3$ at $z=1.7$, in excellent agreement with clustering studies. We also report of a hint, at a 90% confidence level, of a correlation between the convergence amplitude and luminosity, indicating that quasars brighter than $M_i\lesssim -26$ reside in halos of typical mass ${M_{\rm h}\approx 10^{13}\,h^{-1}M_\odot}$, scaling roughly as ${M_{\rm h}\propto L_{\rm opt}^{3/4}}$ at ${M_i\lesssim-24}$, in good agreement with physically-motivated quasar demography models. Although we acknowledge this luminosity dependence is a marginal result, the observed $M_{\rm h}$-$L_{\rm opt}$ relationship could be interpreted as a reflection of the cutoff in the distribution of black hole accretion rates towards high Eddington ratios: the weak trend of $M_{\rm h}$ with $L_{\rm opt}$ observed at low luminosity becomes stronger for the most powerful quasars, which tend to be accreting close to the Eddington limit., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present new measurements of the cosmic cold molecular gas evolution out to redshift 6 based on systematic mining of the ALMA public archive in the COSMOS deep field (A3COSMOS). Our A3COSMOS dataset contains ~700 galaxies (0.3 < z < 6) with high-confidence ALMA detections in the (sub-)millimeter continuum and multi-wavelength spectral energy distributions (SEDs). Multiple gas mass calibration methods are compared and biases in band conversions (from observed ALMA wavelength to rest-frame Rayleigh-Jeans(RJ)-tail continuum) have been tested. Combining our A3COSMOS sample with ~1,000 CO-observed galaxies at 0 < z < 4 (75% at z < 0.1), we parameterize galaxies' molecular gas depletion time and molecular gas to stellar mass ratio (gas fraction) each as a function of the stellar mass, offset from the star-forming main sequence (Delta MS) and cosmic age (or redshift). Our proposed functional form provides a statistically better fit to current data (than functional forms in the literature), and implies a "downsizing" effect (i.e., more-massive galaxies evolve earlier than less-massive ones) and "mass-quenching" (gas consumption slows down with cosmic time for massive galaxies but speeds up for low-mass ones). Adopting galaxy stellar mass functions and applying our function for gas mass calculation, we for the first time infer the cosmic cold molecular gas density evolution out to redshift 6 and find agreement with CO blind surveys as well as semi-analytic modeling. These together provide a coherent picture of cold molecular gas, SFR and stellar mass evolution in galaxies across cosmic time., 41 pages, 23 figures, 3 tables, resubmitted to ApJ after addressing referee's comments. In the hierarchical theory of galaxy formation, a galaxy overdensity is a hallmark of a massive cosmic structure. However, it is less well understood how different types of galaxies trace the underlying large-scale structure. Motivated by the discovery of a z=3.13 protocluster, we examine how the same structure is populated by Ly$\alpha$-emitting galaxies (LAEs). To this end, we have undertaken a deep narrow-band imaging survey sampling Ly$\alpha$ emission at this redshift. Of the 93 LAE candidates within a 36'x36'~(70x70~Mpc^2) field, 21 galaxies form a significant surface overdensity (delta_g=3.3+/-0.9), which is spatially segregated from the Lyman break galaxy (LBG) overdensity. One possible interpretation is that they trace two separate structures of comparable masses (~ 10^{15}M_sun) where the latter is hosted by a halo assembled at an earlier time. We speculate that the dearth of LAEs in the LBG overdensity region may signal the role of halo assembly bias in galaxy formation, which would suggest that different search techniques may be biased accordingly to the formation age or dynamical state of the host halo. The median Ly$\alpha$- and UV luminosity is 30--70\% higher for the protocluster LAEs relative to the field. This difference cannot be explained by the galaxy overdensity alone, and may require a top-heavy mass function, higher star formation efficiency for protocluster halos, or suppression of galaxy formation in low-mass halos. A luminous Ly$\alpha$ blob and an ultramassive galaxy found in this region paint a picture consistent with the expected early growth of galaxies in clusters., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

The discovery of quasars few hundred megayears after the Big Bang represents a major challenge to our understanding of black holes and galaxy formation and evolution. Their luminosity is produced by extreme gas accretion onto black holes, which already reached masses of 10$^9$ M$_\odot$ by z ~ 6. Simultaneously, their host galaxies form hundreds of stars per year, using up gas in the process. To understand which environments are able to sustain the rapid formation of these extreme sources we started a VLT/MUSE effort aimed at characterizing the surroundings of a sample of 5.7 < z < 6.6 quasars dubbed: the Reionization Epoch QUasar InvEstigation with MUSE (REQUIEM) survey. We here present results of our searches for extended Ly-Alpha halos around the first 31 targets observed as part of this program. Reaching 5-sigma surface brightness limits of 0.1-1.1 x 10$^{-17}$ erg/s/cm$^2$/arcsec$^2$ over a 1 arcsec$^2$ aperture, we were able to unveil the presence of 12 Ly-Alpha nebulae, 8 of which are newly discovered. The detected nebulae show a variety of emission properties and morphologies with luminosities ranging from 8 x 10$^{42}$ to 2 x 10$^{44}$ erg/s, FWHMs between 300 and 1700 km/s, sizes < 30 pkpc, and redshifts consistent with those of the quasar host galaxies. As the first statistical and homogeneous investigation of the circum-galactic medium of massive galaxies at the end of the reionization epoch, the REQUIEM survey enables the study of the evolution of the cool gas surrounding quasars in the first 3 Gyr of the Universe. A comparison with the extended Ly-Alpha emission observed around bright (M$_{1450}$ < -25 mag) quasars at intermediate redshift indicates little variations on the properties of the cool gas from z ~ 6 to z ~ 3 followed by a decline in the average surface brightness down to z ~ 2., Comment: 53 pages, too many figures. HectoMAP is a dense, red-selected redshift survey to a limiting $r = 21.3$ covering 55 square degrees in a contiguous 1.5$^\circ$ strip across the northern sky. This region is also covered by the Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program (SSP) photometric survey enabling a range of applications that combine a dense foreground redshift survey with both strong and weak lensing maps. The median redshift of HectoMAP exceeds 0.3 throughout the survey region and the mean density of the redshift survey is $\sim 2000$ galaxies deg$^{-2}$. Here we report a total of 17,313 redshifts in a first data release covering 8.7 square degrees. We include the derived quantities D$_{n}4000$ and stellar mass for nearly all of the objects. Among these galaxies, 8117 constitute a 79\% complete red-selected subsample with $r \leq 20.5$ and an additional 4318 constitute a 68\% complete red-selected subsample with $20.5 < r < 21.3$. As examples of the strengths of HectoMAP data we discuss two applications: refined membership of redMaPPer photometrically selected clusters and a test of HSC photometric redshifts. We highlight a remarkable redMaPPer strong lensing system. The thermodynamic properties of the hot plasma in galaxy clusters retains information on the processes leading to the formation and evolution of the gas in their deep, dark matter potential wells. These processes are dictated not only by gravity but also by gas physics, e.g. AGN feedback and turbulence. In this work, we study the thermodynamic properties, e.g. density, temperature, pressure, and entropy, of the most massive and the most distant ($z > 1.2$) SPT-selected clusters, and compare them with those of the nearby clusters ($z, 29 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables, submitted to ApJ

The classification of dark matter halos as isolated hosts or subhalos is critical for our understanding of structure formation and the galaxy-halo connection. Most commonly, subhalos are defined to reside inside a spherical overdensity boundary such as the virial radius. The resulting host-subhalo relations depend sensitively on the somewhat arbitrary overdensity threshold, but the impact of this dependence is rarely quantified. The recently proposed splashback radius tends to be larger and to include more subhalos than even the largest spherical overdensity boundaries. We systematically investigate the dependence of the subhalo fraction on the radius definition and show that it can vary by factors of unity between different spherical overdensity definitions. Using splashback radii can yet double the abundance of subhalos compared to the virial definition. We also quantify the abundance of flyby (or backsplash) halos, hosts that used to be subhalos in the past. We show that the majority of these objects are mislabeled satellites that are naturally classified as subhalos when we use the splashback radius. We show that the subhalo fraction can be understood as a universal function of only peak height and the slope of the linear power spectrum. We provide a simple fitting function that captures our simulation results to 20% accuracy across a wide range of halo masses, redshifts, and cosmologies. The star-forming emission line galaxies (ELGs) with strong [OII] doublet are one of the main spectroscopic targets for the ongoing and upcoming fourth generation galaxy redshift surveys. In this work, we measure the [OII] luminosity $L_{\mathrm{[OII]}}$ and the near-ultraviolet band absolute magnitude $M_{\mathrm{NUV}}$ for a large sample of galaxies in the redshift range of $0.6\leq z, Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures, accepted by ApJ

At cosmic recombination, there was supersonic relative motion between baryons and dark matter, which originated from the baryonic acoustic oscillations in the early universe. This motion has been considered to have a negligible impact on the late stage of cosmic reionization because the relative velocity quickly decreases. However, recent studies have suggested that the recombination in gas clouds smaller than the local Jeans mass ($\lesssim$ $10^8~M_\odot$) can affect the reionization history by boosting the number of ultraviolet photons required for ionizing the intergalactic medium. Motivated by this, we performed a series of radiation-hydrodynamic simulations to investigate whether the streaming motion can generate variation in the local reionization history by smoothing out clumpy small-scale structures and lowering the ionizing photon budget. We found that the streaming velocity can add a variation of $\Delta z_e$ $\sim$ $0.05$ $-$ $0.5$ in the end-of-reionization redshift, depending on the level of X-ray preheating and the time evolution of ionizing sources. The variation tends to be larger when the ionizing efficiency of galaxies decreases toward later times. Given the long spatial fluctuation scales of the streaming motion ($\gtrsim 100$ Mpc), it can help to explain the Ly$\alpha$ opacity variation observed from quasars and leave large-scale imprints on the ionization field of the intergalactic medium during the reionization. The pre-reionization heating by X-ray sources is another critical factor that can suppress small-scale gas clumping and can diminish the variation in $z_e$ introduced by the streaming motion., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

Measuring temperature fluctuations in the 21 cm signal from the Epoch of Reionization and the Cosmic Dawn is one of the most promising ways to study the Universe at high redshifts. Unfortunately, the 21 cm signal is affected by both cosmology and astrophysics processes in a non-trivial manner. We run a suite of 1,000 numerical simulations with different values of the main astrophysical parameters. From these simulations we produce tens of thousands of 21 cm maps at redshifts $10\leq z\leq 20$. We train a convolutional neural network to remove the effects of astrophysics from the 21 cm maps, and output maps of the underlying matter field. We show that our model is able to generate 2D matter fields that not only resemble the true ones visually, but whose statistical properties agree with the true ones within a few percent down to pretty small scales. We demonstrate that our neural network retains astrophysical information, that can be used to constrain the value of the astrophysical parameters. Finally, we use saliency maps to try to understand which features of the 21 cm maps is the network using in order to determine the value of the astrophysical parameters., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures

Dust properties within a galaxy are known to change from the diffuse medium to dense clouds due to increased local gas density. However, the question of whether dust properties change with redshift remains elusive. In this paper, using the fact that the mean radiation intensity of the interstellar medium (ISM) of star-forming galaxies increases with redshift, we show that dust properties should change due to increasing efficiency of rotational disruption by radiative torques, an effect named RAdiative Torque Disruption (RATD). We first show that, due to RATD, the size distribution of interstellar dust varies with redshift, such as dust grains become smaller at higher $z$. We model the extinction curves and find that the curve becomes steeper with increasing redshift. The ratio of total-to-selective extinction, $R_{V}$, decreases with redshift and achieves low values of $R_{V}\sim 1.5-2.5$ for grains having a composite structure. We also find that dust properties change with the local gas density due to RATD, but the change is dominated by the radiation field for the diffuse ISM. The low values of $R_{V}$ implied by RATD of interstellar dust could reproduce anomalous dust extinction observed toward type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC)-like extinction curves with a steep far-UV rise toward high-z galaxies. Fluctuations in $R_{V}$ due to interstellar turbulence and varying radiation intensity may resolve the tension in measurements of the Hubble constant using SNe Ia. The 21 cm intensity mapping experiments promise to obtain the large-scale distribution of HI gas at the post-reionization epoch. In order to reveal the underlying matter density fluctuations from the HI mapping, it is important to understand how HI gas traces the matter density distribution. Both nonlinear halo clustering and nonlinear effects modulating HI gas in halos may determine the scale below which the HI bias deviates from linearity. We employ three approaches to generate the mock HI density from a large-scale N-body simulation at low redshifts, and demonstrate that the assumption of HI linearity is valid at the scale corresponding to the first peak of baryon acoustic oscillations, but breaks down at $k \gtrsim 0.1\,h\, {\rm Mpc}^{-1}$. The nonlinear effects of halo clustering and HI content modulation counteract each other at small scales, and their competition results in a model-dependent "sweet-spot" redshift near $z$=1 where the HI bias is scale-independent down to small scales. We report Chandra detection of three UV bright radio quiet quasars at $z\gtrsim5$. We have collected a sufficient number of photons to extract an X-ray spectrum of each quasar to measure their basic X-ray properties, such as the X-ray flux, power law photon index ($\Gamma$), and optical-to-X-ray spectral slope ($\alpha_{\rm OX}$). J074749+115352 at $z=5.26$ is the X-ray brightest radio-quiet quasar at $z>5$. It may have a short timescale variation (on a timescale of $\sim3800\rm~s$ in the observer's frame, or $\sim600\rm~s$ in the rest frame) which is however largely embedded in the statistical noise. We extract phase folded spectra of this quasar. There are two distinguishable states: a "high soft" state with an average X-ray flux $\sim2.7$ times of the "low hard" state, and a significantly steeper X-ray spectral slope ($\Gamma=2.40_{-0.32}^{+0.33}$ vs $1.78_{-0.24}^{+0.25}$). We also compare the three quasars detected in this paper to other quasar samples. We find that J074749+115352, with a SMBH mass of $M_{\rm SMBH}\approx1.8\times10^9\rm~M_\odot$ and an Eddington ratio of $\lambda_{\rm Edd}\approx2.3$, is extraordinarily X-ray bright. It has an average $\alpha_{\rm OX}=-1.46\pm0.02$ and a 2-10 keV bolometric correction factor of $L_{\rm bol}/L_{\rm2-10keV}=42.4\pm5.8$, both significantly depart from some well defined scaling relations. We compare $\Gamma$ of the three quasars to other samples at different redshifts, and do not find any significant redshift evolution based on the limited sample of $z>5$ quasars with reliable measurements of the X-ray spectral properties., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication by ApJ

Measurement of fluctuations in diffuse HI 21 cm background radiation from the post-reionization epoch (z < 6) is a promising avenue to probe the large-scale structure of the Universe and understand the evolution of galaxies. We observe the European Large-Area ISO Survey-North 1 (ELAIS-N1) field at 300-500 MHz using the upgraded Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) and employ the 'foreground avoidance' technique to estimate the HI 21 cm power spectrum in the redshift range z = 1.96-3.58. Given the possible systematics that may remain in the data, we find the most stringent upper limits on the spherically averaged 21 cm power spectra at k~1.0 Mpc$^{-1}$ are (58.87 mK)$^2$, (61.49 mK)$^2$, (60.89 mK)$^2$, (105.85 mK)$^2$ at z = 1.96,2.19,2.62 and 3.58, respectively. We use this to constrain the product of neutral HI mass density (Omega_HI) and HI bias (b_HI) to the underlying dark matter density field, [Omega_HI*b_HI], as 0.09,0.11,0.12,0.24 at z=1.96,2.19,2.62,3.58, respectively. To the best of our knowledge these are the first limits on the HI 21 cm power spectra at the redshift range z = 1.96 - 3.58 and would play a significant role to constrain the models of galaxy formation and evolution., Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters (APJL)

The initial orbits of infalling subhalos largely determine the subsequent evolution of the subhalos and satellite galaxies therein and shed light on the assembly of their hosts. Using a large set of cosmological simulations of various resolutions, we quantify the orbital distribution of subhalos at infall time and its mass and redshift dependence in a large dynamic range. We further provide a unified and accurate model validated across cosmic time, which can serve as the initial condition for semi-analytic models. We find that the infall velocity $v$ follows a nearly universal distribution peaked near the host virial velocity $V_{\mathrm{h}}$ for any subhalo mass or redshift, while the infall orbit is most radially biased when $v\sim V_{\mathrm{h}}$. Moreover, subhalos that have a higher host mass or a higher sub-to-host ratio tend to move along a more radial direction with a relatively smaller angular momentum than their low host mass or low sub-to-host ratio counterparts, though they share the same normalized orbital energy. These relations are nearly independent of the redshift when using the density peak height as the proxy for host halo mass. The above trends are consistent with the scenario where the dynamical environment is relatively colder for more massive structures because their own gravity is more likely to dominate the local potentials. Cross-correlations between galaxy weak lensing (WL) and Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) lensing are a powerful tool to probe matter fluctuations at intermediate redshifts and to detect residual systematics in either probe. In this paper, we study the cross-correlation of galaxy WL from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC) first data release and CMB lensing from the final Planck data release, for HSC source galaxies at 0.3< z < 1.5. HSC is the deepest Stage-III galaxy WL survey, and provides both a great opportunity to study the high-redshift universe and new challenges related to its exceptionally high source density, such as source blending. The cross-correlation signal is measured at a significance level of 3.1$��$. The amplitude of our best-fit model with respect to the best-fit 2018 Planck cosmology is $A = 0.81\pm 0.25$, consistent with $A=1$. Our result is also consistent with previous CMB lensing and galaxy WL cross-correlation studies using different surveys. We perform tests with respect to the WL $B$-modes, the point-spread-function, photometric redshift errors, and thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich leakage, and find no significant evidence of residual systematics., 12 pages, 6 figures

Whereas cold dark matter (CDM) simulations predict central dark matter cusps with densities that diverge as $\rho$(r)$\sim$ 1/r observations often indicate constant density cores with finite central densities $\rho_0$ and a flat density distribution within a core radius r$_0$. This paper investigates whether this core-cusp problem can be solved by fuzzy dark matter (FDM), a hypothetical particle with a mass of order m$\approx$10$^{-22}$eV and a corresponding de Broglie wavelength on astrophysical scales. We show that galaxies with CDM halo virial masses M$_{vir} \leq 10^{11}$M$_{\odot}$ follow two core scaling relations. In addition to the well known universal core column density $\Sigma_0 \equiv \rho_0 \times$r$_0$ = 75 M$_{\odot}$pc$^{-2}$ core radii increase with virial masses as r$_0 \sim$ M$_{vir}^{\gamma}$ with $\gamma$ of order unity. Using the simulations by Schive et al. (2014) we demonstrate that FDM can explain the r$_0$-M$_{vir}$ scaling relation if the virial masses of the observed galaxy sample scale with formation redshift z as M$_{vir}\sim$(1+z)$^{-0.4}$. The observed constant $\Sigma_0$ is however in complete disagreement with FDM cores which are characterised by a steep dependence $\Sigma_0 \sim$r$_0^{-3}$, independent of z. More high-resolution simulations are now required to confirm the Schive et al. simulations and explore especially the transition region between the soliton core and the surrounding halo. If these results hold, FDM can be ruled out as the origin of observed dark matter cores and other physical processes are required to account for their formation., Comment: 14 pages, 1 figure, ApJ, in press

Upcoming measurements of the highly redshifted 21cm line with next-generation radio telescopes such as HERA and SKA will provide the intriguing opportunity to probe dark matter (DM) physics during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR), Cosmic Dawn, and the Dark Ages. With HERA already under construction, there is a pressing need to thoroughly understand the impact of DM physics on the intergalactic medium (IGM) during these epochs. We present first results of a hydrodynamic simulation suite with $2 \times 512^3$ particles in a $(100 \ h^{-1} \ \text{Mpc})^3$ box with DM annihilation and baryonic cooling physics. We focus on redshift $z \sim 11$, just before reionization starts in our simulations, and discuss the imprint of DM annihilation on the IGM and on structure formation. We find that whereas structure formation is not affected by thermal WIMPs heavier than $m_\chi \gtrsim 100 \ \text{MeV}$, heating from $\mathcal{O}$(GeV) DM particles may leave a significant imprint on the IGM that alters the 21cm signal. Cold gas in low density regions is particularly susceptible to the effects of DM heating. The launch of the James Webb Space Telescope will open up a new window for observations at the highest redshifts, reaching out to z~15. However, even with this new facility, the first stars will remain out of reach, as they are born in small minihalos with luminosities too faint to be detected even by the longest exposure times. In this paper, we investigate the basic properties of the Ultimately Large Telescope, a facility that can detect Population III star formation regions at high redshift. Observations will take place in the near-infrared and therefore a moon-based facility is proposed. An instrument needs to reach magnitudes as faint as 39mag$_\mathrm{AB}$, corresponding to a primary mirror size of about 100m in diameter. Assuming JWST NIRCam filters, we estimate that Pop III sources will have unique signatures in a colour-colour space and can be identified unambiguously., 5 figures, accepted by ApJ

arXiv:1905.00025v2, We examine the massive colliding cluster El Gordo, one of the most massive clusters at high redshift. We use a free-form lensing reconstruction method that avoids making assumptions about the mass distribution. We use data from the RELICS program and identify new multiply lensed system candidates. The new set of constraints and free-form method provide a new independent mass estimate of this intriguing colliding cluster. Our results are found to be consistent with earlier parametric models, indirectly confirming the assumptions made in earlier work. By fitting a double gNFW profile to the lens model and extrapolating to the virial radius, we infer a total mass for the cluster of M200c=(1.08+0.65−0.12)×1015M⊙. We estimate the uncertainty in the mass due to errors in the photometric redshifts and discuss the uncertainty in the inferred virial mass due to the extrapolation from the lens model. We also find in our lens map a mass overdensity corresponding to the large cometary tail of hot gas, reinforcing its interpretation as a large tidal feature predicted by hydrodynamical simulations that mimic El Gordo. Finally, we discuss the observed relation between the plasma and the mass map, finding that the peak in the projected mass map may be associated with a large concentration of colder gas exhibiting possible star formation. We prove from the modified gravity (MG) galaxy/halo mock catalogs that the shape of the pairwise kinematic Sunyaev-Zeldovich (kSZ) power spectrum $P_{\rm kSZ}$ has constraining power on discriminating different gravity theories on cosmological scales. By varying the effective optical depth $\tau_{\rm T}$ as a free parameter, we verify that the $\tau_{\rm T}$-$f$ (the linear growth rate) degeneracy in the linear theory of $P_{\rm kSZ}$ is broken down by the non-linear structure growth and the scale-dependence of $f$ in some MG theories. Equivalently speaking, the shape of $P_{\rm kSZ}$ alone could be used to constrain the MG theories on cosmological scales. With a good knowledge of galaxy density biases, we verify that, a combination of the next generation of CMB and galaxy spectroscopic redshift surveys, e.g. BOSS+CMB-S4 or DESI+CMB-S4, could potentially discriminate $f(R)$ models from the general relativity at $\sim5\sigma$ level using the shape of the galaxy pairwise kSZ dipole $P_{{\rm kSZ},\ell=1}$ alone, when $f_{R0}=10^{-4}$., Comment: ApJ accepted

The properties of galaxy clusters as a function of redshift can be utilized as an important cosmological tool. We present initial results from a program of follow-up observations of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect (SZE) in high redshift galaxy clusters detected at infrared wavelengths in the Massive and Distant Clusters of WISE Survey (MaDCoWS). Using typical on-source integration times of 3-4 hours per cluster, MUSTANG2 on the Green Bank Telescope was able to measure strong detections of SZE decrements and statistically significant masses on 14 out of 16 targets. On the remaining two, weaker (3.7 sigma) detections of the SZE signal and strong upper limits on the masses were obtained. In this paper we present masses and pressure profiles of each target and outline the data analysis used to recover these quantities. Of the clusters with strong detections, three show significantly flatter pressure profiles while, from the MUSTANG2 data, five others show signs of disruption at their cores. However, outside of the cores of the clusters, we were unable to detect significant amounts of asymmetry. Finally, there are indications that the relationship between optical richness used by MaDCoWS and SZE-inferred mass may be significantly flatter than indicated in previous studies., Comment: Accepted by ApJ ; 20 pages, 7 figures

Line intensity mapping (LIM) is a promising tool to efficiently probe the three-dimensional large-scale structure by mapping the aggregate emission of a spectral line from all sources that trace the matter density field. Spectral lines from different redshifts can fall in the same observed frequency and be confused, however, which is a major challenge in LIM. In this work, we develop a line de-confusion technique in map space capable of reconstructing the three-dimensional spatial distribution of line-emitting sources. If multiple spectral lines of a source population are observable in multiple frequencies, using the sparse approximation, our technique iteratively extracts sources along a given line of sight by fitting the LIM data to a set of spectral templates. We demonstrate that the technique successfully extracts sources with emission lines present at a few $\sigma$ above the noise level, taking into account uncertainties in the source modeling and presence of continuum foreground contamination and noise fluctuations. As an example, we consider a TIME/CONCERTO-like survey targeting [C II] at the epoch of reionization, and reliably reconstruct the 3D spatial distribution of the CO interlopers at $0.5\lesssim z\lesssim 1.5$. We also demonstrate a successful de-confusion for the SPHEREx mission in the near-infrared wavelengths. Potentially, the reconstructed maps can be further cross-correlated with a (galaxy) tracer population to estimate the total interloper power in the linear clustering regime. This technique is a general framework to extract the phase-space distribution of low-redshift interlopers, without the need of external information, for any line de-confusion problem., Comment: 25 pages, 22 figures, accepted by ApJ

The cosmic thermal history, quantified by the evolution of the mean thermal energy density in the universe, is driven by the growth of structures as baryons get shock heated in collapsing dark matter halos. This process can be probed by redshift-dependent amplitudes of the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect background. To do so, we cross-correlate eight sky intensity maps in the $\it{Planck}$ and Infrared Astronomical Satellite missions with two million spectroscopic redshift references in the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys. This delivers snapshot spectra for the far-infrared to microwave background light as a function of redshift up to $z\sim3$. We decompose them into the SZ and thermal dust components. Our SZ measurements directly constrain $\langle bP_{\rm e} \rangle$, the halo bias-weighted mean electron pressure, up to $z\sim 1$. This is the highest redshift achieved to date, with uncorrelated redshift bins thanks to the spectroscopic references. We detect a threefold increase in the density-weighted mean electron temperature $\bar{T}_{\rm{e}}$ from $7\times 10^5~{\rm K}$ at $z=1$ to $2\times 10^6~{\rm K}$ today. Over $z=1$-$0$, we witness the build-up of nearly $70\%$ of the present-day mean thermal energy density $\rho_{\rm{th}}$, with the corresponding density parameter $\Omega_{\rm th}$ reaching $1.5 \times10^{-8}$. We find the mass bias parameter of $\it{Planck}$'s universal pressure profile of $B=1.27$ (or $1-b=1/B=0.79$), consistent with the magnitude of non-thermal pressure in gas motion and turbulence from mass assembly. We estimate the redshift-integrated mean Compton parameter $y\sim1.2\times10^{-6}$, which will be tested by future spectral distortion experiments. The cosmic infrared background (CIB) anisotropies and cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing are powerful measurements for exploring the cosmological and astrophysical problems. In this work, we measure the auto-correlation power spectrum of the CIB anisotropies in the Herschel-SPIRE HerMES Large Mode Survey (HeLMS) field, and the cross power spectrum with the CMB lensing measurements from the Planck satellite. The HeLMS field covers more than 270 deg^2, which is much larger than the previous analysis. We use the Herschel Level 1 time stream data to merge the CIB maps at 250, 350, and 500 um bands, and mask the areas where the flux is greater than 3-sigma (~50 mJy/beam) or no measured data. We obtain the final CIB power spectra at 100, Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables. Accepted for publication in ApJ

We used the mark weighted correlation functions (MCFs), $W(s)$, to study the large scale structure of the Universe. We studied five types of MCFs with the weighting scheme $\rho^\alpha$, where $\rho$ is the local density, and $\alpha$ is taken as $-1,\ -0.5,\ 0,\ 0.5$, and 1. We found that different MCFs have very different amplitudes and scale-dependence. Some of the MCFs exhibit distinctive peaks and valleys that do not exist in the standard correlation functions. Their locations are robust against the redshifts and the background geometry, however it is unlikely that they can be used as ``standard rulers'' to probe the cosmic expansion history. Nonetheless we find that these features may be used to probe parameters related with the structure formation history, such as the values of $\sigma_8$ and the galaxy bias. Finally, after conducting a comprehensive analysis using the full shapes of the $W(s)$s and $W_{\Delta s}(\mu)$s, we found that, combining different types of MCFs can significantly improve the cosmological parameter constraints. Compared with using only the standard correlation function, the combinations of MCFs with $\alpha=0,\ 0.5,\ 1$ and $\alpha=0,\ -1,\ -0.5,\ 0.5,\ 1$ can improve the constraints on $\Omega_m$ and $w$ by $\approx30\%$ and $50\%$, respectively. We present the physical properties of AKARI sources without optical counterparts in optical images from the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) on the Subaru telescope. Using the AKARI infrared (IR) source catalog and HSC optical catalog, we select 583 objects that do not have HSC counterparts in the AKARI North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) wide survey field ($\sim 5$ deg$^{2}$). Because the HSC limiting magnitude is deep ($g_{\rm AB}$ $\sim 28.6$), these are good candidates for extremely red star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and/or active galactic nuclei (AGNs), possibly at high redshifts. We compile multi-wavelength data out to 500 $\mu$m and use it for Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) fitting with CIGALE to investigate the physical properties of AKARI galaxies without optical counterparts. We also compare their physical quantities with AKARI mid-IR selected galaxies with HSC counterparts. The estimated redshifts of AKARI objects without HSC counterparts range up to $z\sim 4$, significantly higher than that of AKARI objects with HSC counterparts. We find that: (i) 3.6 $-$ 4.5 $\mu$m color, (ii) AGN luminosity, (iii) stellar mass, (iv) star formation rate, and (v) $V$-band dust attenuation in the interstellar medium of AKARI objects without HSC counterparts are systematically larger than those of AKARI objects with counterparts. Detecting neutral hydrogen structures in the intergalactic medium (IGM) during cosmic reionization via absorption (21 cm forest) against a background radiation is considered independent and complementary to the three-dimensional tomography and power spectrum techniques. The direct detection of this absorption requires very bright ($\gtrsim 10$-100 mJy) background sources at high redshifts ($z\gtrsim 8$), which are evidently rare; very long times of integration; or instruments of very high sensitivity. This motivates a statistical one-dimensional (1D) power spectrum approach along narrow sightlines but with fainter background objects ($\sim 1$-10 mJy), which are likely to be more abundant and significant contributors at high redshifts. The 1D power spectrum reduces cosmic variance and improves sensitivity especially on small spatial scales. Using standard radiative transfer and fiducial models for the instrument, the background sources, and the evolution of IGM structures during cosmic reionization, the potential of the 1D power spectrum along selected narrow directions is investigated against uncertainties from thermal noise and the chromatic synthesized point spread function (PSF) response. Minimum requirements on the number of high-redshift background sources, the telescope sensitivity, and the PSF quality are estimated for a range of instrumental, background source, and reionization model parameters. The 1D power spectrum is intrinsically stronger at higher redshifts. Next generation ground-based gravitational-wave detectors will observe binary black hole (BBH) mergers up to redshift $z\gtrsim{}10$, probing the evolution of compact binary (CB) mergers across cosmic time. Here, we present a new data-driven model to estimate the cosmic merger rate density (MRD) evolution of CBs, by coupling catalogs of CB mergers with observational constraints on the cosmic star formation rate density and on the metallicity evolution of the Universe. We adopt catalogs of CB mergers derived from recent $N-$body and population-synthesis simulations, to describe the MRD of CBs formed in young star clusters (hereafter, dynamical CBs) and in the field (hereafter, isolated CBs). The local MRD of dynamical BBHs is $\mathcal{R}_{\rm BBH}=64^{+34}_{-20}$ Gpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$, consistent with the 90% credible interval from the first and second observing run (O1 and O2) of the LIGO-Virgo collaboration, and with the local MRD of isolated BBHs ($\mathcal{R}_{\rm BBH}=50^{+71}_{-37}$ Gpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$). The local MRD of dynamical and isolated black hole - neutron star binaries is $\mathcal{R}_{\rm BHNS}=41^{+33}_{-23}$ and $49^{+48}_{-34}$~Gpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$, respectively. Both values are consistent with the upper limit inferred from O1 and O2. Finally, the local MRD of dynamical binary neutron stars (BNSs, $\mathcal{R}_{\rm BNS}=151^{+59}_{-38}$ Gpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$) is a factor of two lower than the local MRD of isolated BNSs ($\mathcal{R}_{\rm BNS}=283^{+97}_{-75}$ Gpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$). The MRD for all CB classes grows with redshift, reaching its maximum at $z \in [1.5,2.5]$, and then decreases. With the distance sum rule in the Friedmann-Lema\^{\i}tre-Robertson-Walker metric, model-independent constraints on both the Hubble constant $H_0$ and spatial curvature $\Omega_{K}$ can be obtained using strong lensing time-delay data and Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) luminosity distances. This method is limited by the relative low redshifts of SNe Ia, however. Here, we propose using quasars as distance indicators, extending the coverage to encompass the redshift range of strong lensing systems. We provide a novel and improved method of determining $H_0$ and $\Omega_{K}$ simultaneously. By applying this technique to the time-delay measurements of seven strong lensing systems and the known ultraviolet versus X-ray luminosity correlation of quasars, we constrain the possible values of both $H_0$ and $\Omega_{K}$, and find that $H_0=75.3^{+3.0}_{-2.9}$ km $\rm s^{-1}$ $\rm Mpc^{-1}$ and $\Omega_{K}=-0.01^{+0.18}_{-0.17}$. The measured $\Omega_{K}$ is consistent with zero spatial curvature, indicating that there is no significant deviation from a flat universe. If we use flatness as a prior, we infer that $H_0=75.3^{+1.9}_{-1.9}$ km $\rm s^{-1}$ $\rm Mpc^{-1}$, representing a precision of 2.5\%. If we further combine these data with the 1048 current Pantheon SNe Ia, our model-independent constraints can be further improved to $H_0=75.3^{+3.0}_{-2.9}$ km $\rm s^{-1}$ $\rm Mpc^{-1}$ and $\Omega_{K}=0.05^{+0.16}_{-0.14}$. In every case, we find that the Hubble constant measured with this technique is strongly consistent with the value ($\sim 74$ km $\rm s^{-1}$ $\rm Mpc^{-1}$) measured using the local distance ladder, as opposed to the value optimized by {\it Planck}., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables. Recent studies have shown the great power of peak counts in weak-lensing maps. In this work, we apply the inverse-Gaussianization method proposed in Yu et al. to produce weak-lensing convergence maps quickly and investigate the peak statistics, including the peak height counts and peak steepness counts in these mocks. The distributions of peak height and steepness are in good agreement with the simulation results. The difference is ≲20% for these peak statistics in the maps at source redshift z s = 1. Also, the loss of off-diagonal elements in the peak covariance motivates us to consider the super-sample variance in weak-lensing peak statistics. We propose four correction methods to effectively recover the (anti)correlation among different bins by adding different scatters in the mean value of these mocks. Finally, as an example of the application, we adopt the improved inverse-Gaussianization method to quickly generate 40,000 mocks to calculate precision matrices for the power spectrum and peak-statistics joint analysis.

The redshift-space distortion (RSD) in the observed distribution of galaxies is known as a powerful probe of cosmology. Observations of large-scale RSD have given tight constraints on the linear growth rate of the large-scale structures in the universe. On the other hand, the small-scale RSD, caused by galaxy random motions inside clusters, has not been much used in cosmology, but also has cosmological information because universes with different cosmological parameters have different halo mass functions and virialized velocities. We focus on the projected correlation function $w(r_p)$ and the multipole moments $\xi_l$ on small scales ($1.4$ to $30\ h^{-1}\rm{Mpc}$). Using simulated galaxy samples generated from a physically motivated most bound particle (MBP)-galaxy correspondence scheme in the Multiverse Simulation, we examine the dependence of the small-scale RSD on the cosmological matter density parameter $\Omega_m$, the satellite velocity bias with respect to MBPs, $b_v^s$, and the merger-time-scale parameter $\alpha$. We find that $\alpha=1.5$ gives an excellent fit to the $w(r_p)$ and $\xi_l$ measured from the SDSS-KIAS value added galaxy catalog. We also define the ``strength'' of Fingers-of-God as the ratio of the parallel and perpendicular size of the contour in the two-point correlation function set by a specific threshold value and show that the strength parameter helps constraining $(\Omega_m, b_v^s, \alpha)$ by breaking the degeneracy among them. The resulting parameter values from all measurements are $(\Omega_m,b_v^s)=(0.272\pm0.013,0.982\pm0.040)$, indicating a slight reduction of satellite galaxy velocity relative to the MBP. However, considering that the average MBP speed inside haloes is $0.94$ times the dark matter velocity dispersion, the main drivers behind the galaxy velocity bias are gravitational interactions, rather than baryonic effects., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Understanding the formation and evolution of the Universe is crucial for cosmological studies, and the line intensity mapping provides a powerful tool for this kind of study. We propose to make use of multipole moments of redshift-space line intensity power spectrum to constrain the cosmological and astrophysical parameters, such as the equation of state of dark energy, massive neutrinos, primordial non-Gaussianity, and star formation rate density. As an example, we generate mock data of multipole power spectra for H-alpha 6563AA, [OIII] 5007AA and [OII] 3727AA measured by SPHEREx experiment at z=1 considering contaminations from interloper lines, and use Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method to constrain the parameters in the model. We find a good fitting result of the parameters compared to their fiducial values, which means that the multipole power spectrum can effectively distinguish signal and interloper lines, and break the degeneracies between parameters, such as line mean intensity and bias. We also explore the cross power spectrum with CSST (Chinese Space Station Telescope) spectroscopic galaxy survey in the constraints. Since more accurate fitting results can be obtained by including measurements of the emission lines at higher redshifts out to z=3 at least and cross-correlations between emission lines can be involved, the line intensity mapping is expected to offer excellent results in future cosmological and astrophysical studies., 13 pages, 9 figures. A new diagnostics to break the degeneracy between the total neutrino mass ($M_{\nu}$) and the primordial power spectrum amplitude ($\sigma_{8}$) by using the drifting coefficient of the field cluster mass function is presented. Analyzing the data from the Cosmological Massive Neutrino Simulations, we first determine the numerical mass functions of the field clusters at various redshifts. Then, we compare the numerical results with the analytical model characterized by a single parameter called the drifting coefficient which measures the drifts of the collapse density threshold, $\delta_{c}$, from the Einstein-de Sitter spherical value, $\delta_{sc}$, at a given mass scale. It is found that the analytic model for the field cluster mass function is found to work excellently even in the presence of massive neutrinos and that its drifting coefficient evolves differently in the cosmologies with different values of $M_{\nu}$. At low redshifts ($z\lesssim 0.3$) the more massive neutrinos drift $\delta_{c}$ further from $\delta_{sc}$, while the opposite trend is found at higher redshifts ($z\gtrsim0.3$). Speculating that this distinct redshift-dependent effect of massive neutrinos on the drifting coefficient of the field cluster mass function might help break the $\sigma_{8}$-$M_{\nu}$ degeneracy, we also show that the sensitivity of this new diagnostics to $M_{\nu}$ is high enough to discriminate the case of $M_{\nu}=0.1\,{\rm eV}$ from that of massless neutrinos., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ, 7 figures, minor revision

In the hierarchical structure formation model of the universe, galaxy clusters are assembled through a series of mergers. Accordingly, it is expected that galaxy clusters in the early universe are actively forming and dynamically young. Located at a high redshift of z=1.71, SpARCS1049+56 offers a unique look into the galaxy cluster formation process. This cluster has been shown to be rich in cluster galaxies and to have intense star formation. Its high redshift pushes a weak-lensing analysis beyond the regime of the optical spectrum into that of the infrared. Equipped with deep Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 UVIS and IR observations, we present a weak-lensing characterization of SpARCS1049+56. As few IR weak-lensing studies have been performed, we discuss the details of PSF modeling and galaxy shape measurement for an IR weak-lensing procedure and the systematics that come with the territory. It will be critical to understand these systematics in future weak-lensing studies in the IR with the next generation space telescopes such as JWST, Euclid, and WFIRST. Through a careful analysis, the mass distribution of this young galaxy cluster is mapped and the convergence peak is detected at a 3.3 sigma level. The weak-lensing mass of the cluster is estimated to be $3.5\pm1.2\times10^{14}\ \text{M}_\odot$ and is consistent with the mass derived from a mass-richness scaling relation. This mass is extreme for a cluster at such a high redshift and suggests that SpARCS1049+56 is rare in the standard $\Lambda$CDM universe., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, Accepted to ApJ

General relativity reproduces main current cosmological observations, assuming the validity of cosmic distance duality relation (CDDR) at all scales and epochs. However, CDDR is poorly tested in the redshift interval between the farthest observed Type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) and that of the Cosmic Microwave background (CMB). We present a new idea of testing the validity of CDDR, through the multiple measurements of high-redshift quasars. Luminosity distances are derived from the relation between the UV and X-ray luminosities of quasars, while angular diameter distances are obtained from the compact structure in radio quasars. This will create a valuable opportunity where two different cosmological distances from the same kind of objects at high redshifts are compared. Our constraints are more stringent than other currently available results based on different observational data and show no evidence for the deviation from CDDR at $z\sim 3$. Astrophysical observations provide a unique opportunity to test possible signatures of Lorentz Invariance Violation (LIV), due to the high energies and long distances involved. In quantum theory of gravity, one may expect the modification of the dispersion relation between energy and momentum for photons, which can be probed with the time-lag (the arrival time delay between light curves in different energy bands) of Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). In this paper, by using the detailed time-delay measurements of GRB 160625B at different energy bands, as well as 23 time-delay GRBs covering the redshifts range of $z=0.168-2.5$ (which were measured at different energy channels from the light curves), we propose an improved model-independent method (based on the newly-compiled sample of $H(z)$ measurements) to probe the energy-dependent velocity due to the modified dispersion relation for photons. In the framework of a more complex and reasonable theoretical expression to describe the time delays, our results imply that the intrinsic time lags can be better described with more GRBs time delay data. More importantly, through direct fitting of the time-delay measurements of a sample of GRBs, our limit on the LIV energy scale is comparable to that with unknown constant for the intrinsic time lag, much lower than the Planck energy scale in both linear LIV and quadratic LIV cases., 7pages,3figures,Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a statistical analysis of flybys of dark matter halos compared to mergers using cosmological $N$-body simulations. We mainly focus on gravitationally interacting target halos with mass of $10^{10.8}-10^{13.0}h^{-1}M_{\odot}$, and their neighbors are counted only when the mass ratio is 1:3$-$3:1 and the distance is less than the sum of the virial radii of target and neighbor. The neighbors are divided into the flyby or merger samples if the pair's total energy is greater or smaller, respectively, than the capture criterion with consideration of dynamical friction. The main results are as follows: (a) The flyby fraction increases by up to a factor of 50 with decreasing halo mass and by up to a factor of 400 with increasing large-scale density, while the merger fraction does not show any significant dependencies on these two parameters; (b) The redshift evolution of the flyby fraction is twofold, increasing with redshift at $01$, while the merger fraction increases monotonically with redshift at $z=0\sim4$; (c) The multiple interactions with two or more neighbors are on average flyby-dominated, and their fraction has a mass and environment dependence similar to that for the flyby fraction; (d) Given that flybys substantially outnumber mergers toward $z=0$ (by a factor of five) and the multiple interactions are flyby-dominated, the flyby's contribution to galactic evolution is stronger than ever at the present epoch, especially for less massive halos and in the higher density environment. Simultaneous measurements of distance and redshift can be used to constrain the expansion history of the universe and associated cosmological parameters. Merging binary black hole (BBH) systems are standard sirens---their gravitational waveform provides direct information about the luminosity distance to the source. Because gravity is scale-free, there is a perfect degeneracy between the source masses and redshift; some non-gravitational information is necessary to break the degeneracy and determine the redshift of the source. Here we suggest that the pair instability supernova (PISN) process, thought to be the source of the observed upper-limit on the black hole (BH) mass in merging BBH systems at $\sim 45 \, M_\odot$, imprints a mass scale in the population of BBH mergers and permits a measurement of the redshift-luminosity-distance relation with these sources. We simulate five years of BBH detections in the Advanced LIGO and Virgo detectors with realistic assumptions about the BBH merger rate, a mass distribution incorporating a smooth PISN cutoff, and measurement uncertainty. We show that after one year of operation at design sensitivity (circa 2021) the BBH population can constrain $H(z)$ to $6.1\%$ at a pivot redshift $z \simeq 0.8$. After five years (circa 2025) the constraint improves to $2.9\%$. This measurement relies only on general relativity and the presence of a cutoff mass scale that is approximately fixed or calibrated across cosmic time; it is independent of any distance ladder or cosmological model.
