Search

The current tension between the direct and the early Universe measurements of the Hubble Constant, $H_0$, requires detailed scrutiny of all the data and methods used in the studies on both sides of the debate. The Cepheids in the type Ia supernova (SNIa) host galaxy NGC 5584 played a key role in the local measurement of $H_0$. The SH0ES project used the observations of this galaxy to derive a relation between Cepheids' periods and ratios of their amplitudes in different optical bands of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), and used these relations to analyse the light curves of the Cepheids in around half of the current sample of local SNIa host galaxies. In this work, we present an independent detailed analysis of the Cepheids in NGC 5584. We employ different tools for our photometric analysis and a completely different method for our light curve analysis, and we do not find a systematic difference between our period and mean magnitude measurements compared to those reported by SH0ES. By adopting a period-luminosity relation calibrated by the Cepheids in the Milky Way, we measure a distance modulus $\mu=31.810\pm0.047$ (mag) which is in agreement with $\mu=31.786\pm0.046$ (mag) measured by SH0ES. In addition, the relations we find between periods and amplitude ratios of the Cepheids in NGC 5584 are significantly tighter than those of SH0ES and their potential impact on the direct $H_0$ measurement will be investigated in future studies., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal on 17-Feb-2021

[Abridged] Tight correlations between supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass ($M_{\rm BH}$) and the properties of the host galaxy have useful implications for our understanding of the growth of SMBHs and evolution of galaxies. Here, we present newly observed correlations between $M_{\rm BH}$ and the host galaxy total UV$-$ [3.6] color ($\mathcal{C_{\rm UV,tot}}$, Pearson's r = $0.6-0.7$) for a sample of 67 galaxies (20 early-type galaxies and 47 late-type galaxies) with directly measured $M_{\rm BH}$ in the GALEX/S$^{4}$G survey. The colors are carefully measured in a homogeneous manner using the galaxies' FUV, NUV and 3.6 $\micron$ magnitudes and their multi-component structural decompositions in the literature. We find that more massive SMBHs are hosted by (early- and late-type) galaxies with redder colors, but the $M_{\rm BH}- \mathcal{C_{\rm UV,tot}}$ relations for the two morphological types have slopes that differ at $\sim 2 \sigma$ level. Early-type galaxies define a red sequence in the $M_{\rm BH}- \mathcal{C_{\rm UV,tot}}$ diagrams, while late-type galaxies trace a blue sequence. Within the assumption that the specific star formation rate of a galaxy (sSFR) is well traced by $L_{\rm UV}/L_{\rm 3.6}$, it follows that the SMBH masses for late-type galaxies exhibit a steeper dependence on sSFR than those for early-type galaxies. The $M_{\rm BH}- \mathcal{C_{\rm UV,tot}}$ and $M_{\rm BH}-L_{\rm 3.6,tot}$ relations for the sample galaxies reveal a comparable level of vertical scatter in the log $M_{\rm BH}$ direction, roughly $5\%-27\%$ more than the vertical scatter of the $M_{\rm BH}-\sigma$ relation. We present optical and near-infrared ($ugriYJH$) photometry of host galaxies of Type Ia supernovae (SN~Ia) observed by the \textit{Carnegie Supernova Project-I}. We determine host galaxy stellar masses and, for the first time, study their correlation with SN~Ia standardized luminosity across optical and near-infrared ($uBgVriYJH$) bands. In the individual bands, we find that SNe~Ia are more luminous in more massive hosts with luminosity offsets ranging between $-0.07 \pm0.03$ mag to $-0.15\pm0.04$ mag after light-curve standardization. The slope of the SN~Ia Hubble residual-host mass relation is negative across all $uBgVriYJH$ bands with values ranging between $-0.036\pm 0.025$ mag/dex to $-0.097\pm 0.027$ mag/dex -- implying that SNe~Ia in more massive galaxies are brighter than expected. The near-constant observed correlations across optical and near-infrared bands indicate that dust may not play a significant role in the observed luminosity offset--host mass correlation. We measure projected separations between SNe~Ia and their host centers, and find that SNe~Ia that explode beyond a projected 10 kpc have a $\rm 30\% \ to \ 50\%$ reduction of the dispersion in Hubble residuals across all bands -- making them a more uniform subset of SNe~Ia. Dust in host galaxies, peculiar velocities of nearby SN~Ia, or a combination of both may drive this result as the color excesses of SNe~Ia beyond 10 kpc are found to be generally lower than those interior, but there is also a diminishing trend of the dispersion as we exclude nearby events. We do not find that SN~Ia average luminosity varies significantly when they are grouped in various host morphological types. We present a catalog of physical properties for galaxies hosting active galactic nuclei (AGN) detected by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). By fitting broadband spectral energy distributions of sources in the WISE AGN Catalog (Assef et al. 2018) with empirical galaxy and AGN templates, we derive photometric redshifts, AGN bolometric luminosities, measures of AGN obscuration, host galaxy stellar masses, and host galaxy star formation rates (SFRs) for 695,273 WISE AGN. The wide-area nature of this catalog significantly augments the known number of obscured AGN out to redshifts of z~3 and will be useful for studies focused on AGN or their host galaxy physical properties. We first show that the most likely non-AGN contaminants are galaxies at redshifts of z=0.2-0.3, with relatively blue W1-W2 colors, and with high specific SFRs for which the dust continuum emission is elevated in the W2 filter. Toward increasingly lower redshifts, WISE AGN host galaxies have systematically lower specific SFRs, relative to those of normal star forming galaxies, likely due to decreased cold gas fractions and the time delay between global star formation and AGN triggering. Finally, WISE AGN obscuration is not strongly correlated with AGN bolometric luminosity but shows a significant negative correlation with Eddington ratio. This result is consistent with a version of the `receding torus' model in which the obscuring material is located within the supermassive black hole gravitational sphere of influence and the dust inner radius increases due to radiation pressure., 21 pages, 17 figures. A numerical detection of the mass-dependent spin transition of the galaxies is presented. Analyzing a sample of the galaxies with stellar masses in the range of $10^{9}< (M_{\star}/M_{\odot})\le 10^{11}$ from the IllustrisTNG300-1 simulations, we explore the alignment tendency between the galaxy baryon spins and the three eigenvectors of the linearly reconstructed tidal field as a function of $M_{\star}$ and its evolution in the redshift range of $0\le z \le 1.5$. Detecting a significant signal of the occurrence of the mass-dependent transition of the galaxy spins, we show that the centrals differ from the satellites in their spin transition type. As $M_{\star}$ increases beyond a certain threshold mass, the preferred directions of the central galaxy spins transit from the minor to the intermediate tidal eigenvectors (type two) at $z=0.5$ and $1$, while those of the satellites transit from the minor to the major tidal eigenvectors (type one) at $z=1$ and $1.5$. It is also shown that the mass range and type of the spin transition depend on the galaxy morphology, degree of the alignments between the baryon and total spin vectors as well as on the environmental density. Meanwhile, the stellar spins of the galaxies are found to yield a weak signal of the T1 transitions at $z=0$, whose strength and trend depend on the degree of the alignments between the stellar and baryon spins. Polytropes have gained renewed interest because they account for several seemingly-disconnected observational properties of galaxies. Here we study if polytropes are also able to explain the stellar mass distribution within galaxies. We develop a code to fit surface density profiles using polytropes projected in the plane of the sky (propols). Sersic profiles are known to be good proxies for the global shapes of galaxies and we find that, ignoring central cores, propols and Sersic profiles are indistinguishable within observational errors (within 5 % over 5 orders of magnitude in surface density). The range of physically meaningful polytropes yields Sersic indexes between 0.4 and 6. The code has been systematically applied to ~750 galaxies with carefully measured mass density profiles and including all morphological types and stellar masses (7 < log (Mstar/Msun) < 12). The propol fits are systematically better than Sersic profiles when log(Mstar/Msun) < 9 and systematically worst when log(Mstar/Msun) > 10. Although with large scatter, the observed polytropic indexes increase with increasing mass and tend to cluster around m=5. For the most massive galaxies, propols are very good at reproducing their central parts, but they do not handle well cores and outskirts altogether. Polytropes are self-gravitating systems in thermal meta-equilibrium as defined by the Tsallis entropy. Thus, the above results are compatible with the principle of maximum Tsallis entropy dictating the internal structure in dwarf galaxies and in the central region of massive galaxies., Accepted for publication in ApJ. Line intensity mapping (LIM) provides a unique and powerful means to probe cosmic structures by measuring the aggregate line emission from all galaxies across redshift. The method is complementary to conventional galaxy redshift surveys that are object-based and demand exquisite point-source sensitivity. The Tomographic Ionized-carbon Mapping Experiment (TIME) will measure the star formation rate (SFR) during cosmic reionization by observing the redshifted [CII] 158$\mu$m line ($6 \lesssim z \lesssim 9$) in the LIM regime. TIME will simultaneously study the abundance of molecular gas during the era of peak star formation by observing the rotational CO lines emitted by galaxies at $0.5 \lesssim z \lesssim 2$. We present the modeling framework that predicts the constraining power of TIME on a number of observables, including the line luminosity function, and the auto- and cross-correlation power spectra, including synergies with external galaxy tracers. Based on an optimized survey strategy and fiducial model parameters informed by existing observations, we forecast constraints on physical quantities relevant to reionization and galaxy evolution, such as the escape fraction of ionizing photons during reionization, the faint-end slope of the galaxy luminosity function at high redshift, and the cosmic molecular gas density at cosmic noon. We discuss how these constraints can advance our understanding of cosmological galaxy evolution at the two distinct cosmic epochs for TIME, starting in 2021, and how they could be improved in future phases of the experiment., Comment: 30 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present spectroscopic confirmation of two new massive galaxy protoclusters at $z=2.24\pm0.02$, BOSS1244 and BOSS1542, traced by groups of Coherently Strong Ly$\alpha$ Absorption (CoSLA) systems imprinted in the absorption spectra of a number of quasars from the SDSS III and identified as overdensities of narrowband-selected H$\alpha$ emitters (HAEs). Using MMT/MMIRS and LBT/LUCI near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, we confirm 46 and 36 HAEs in the BOSS1244 and BOSS1542 fields, respectively. BOSS1244 displays a South-West (SW) component at $z=2.230\pm0.002$ and another North-East (NE) component at $z=2.246\pm0.001$ with the line-of-sight velocity dispersions of $405\pm202$ km s$^{-1}$ and $377\pm99$ km s$^{-1}$, respectively. Interestingly, we find that the SW region of BOSS1244 contains two substructures in redshift space, likely merging to form a larger system. In contrast, BOSS1542 exhibits an extended filamentary structure with a low velocity dispersion of $247\pm32$ km s$^{-1}$ at $z=2.241\pm0.001$, providing a direct confirmation of a large-scale cosmic web in the early Universe. The galaxy overdensities $\delta_{\rm g}$ on the scale of 15 cMpc are $22.9\pm4.9$, $10.9\pm2.5$, and $20.5\pm3.9$ for the BOSS1244 SW, BOSS1244 NE, and BOSS1542 filament, respectively. They are the most overdense galaxy protoclusters ($\delta_{\rm g}>20$) discovered to date at $z>2$. These systems are expected to become virialized at $z\sim0$ with a total mass of $M_{\rm SW}=(1.59\pm0.20)\times10^{15}$ $M_{\odot}$, $M_{\rm NE} =(0.83\pm0.11)\times10^{15}$ $M_{\odot}$ and $M_{\rm filament}=(1.42\pm0.18)\times10^{15}$ $M_{\odot}$, respectively. We use the Cosmic Assembly Deep Near-infrared Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) data to study the relationship between quenching and the stellar mass surface density within the central radius of 1 kpc ($\Sigma_1$) of low-mass galaxies (stellar mass $M_* \lesssim 10^{9.5} M_\odot$) at $0.5 \leq z < 1.5$. Our sample is mass complete down to $\sim 10^9 M_\odot$ at $0.5 \leq z < 1.0$. We compare the mean $\Sigma_1$ of star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and quenched galaxies (QGs) at the same redshift and $M_*$. We find that low-mass QGs have higher $\Sigma_1$ than low-mass SFGs, similar to galaxies above $10^{10} M_\odot$. The difference of $\Sigma_1$ between QGs and SFGs increases slightly with $M_*$ at $M_* \lesssim 10^{10} M_\odot$ and decreases with $M_*$ at $M_* \gtrsim 10^{10} M_\odot$. The turnover mass is consistent with the mass where quenching mechanisms transition from internal to environmental quenching. At $0.5 \leq z < 1.0$, we find that the $\Sigma_1$ of galaxies increases by about 0.25 dex in the green valley (i.e., the transitioning region from star forming to fully quenched), regardless of their $M_*$. Using the observed specific star formation rate (sSFR) gradient in the literature as a constraint, we estimate that the quenching timescale (i.e., time spent in the transition) of low-mass galaxies is a few ($\sim4$) Gyrs at $0.5 \leq z < 1.0$. The mechanisms responsible for quenching need to gradually quench star formation in an outside-in way, i.e., preferentially ceasing star formation in outskirts of galaxies while maintaining their central star formation to increase $\Sigma_1$. An interesting and intriguing result is the similarity of the growth of $\Sigma_1$ in the green valley between low-mass and massive galaxies, which suggests that the role of internal processes in quenching low-mass galaxies is a question worthy of further investigation., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures. We present the analytical framework for converting projected light distributions with a S\'ersic profile into three-dimensional light distributions for stellar systems of arbitrary triaxial shape. The main practical result is the definition of a simple yet robust measure of intrinsic galaxy size: the median radius $r_\mathrm{med}$, defined as the radius of a sphere that contains 50% of the total luminosity or mass, that is, the median distance of a star to the galaxy center. We examine how $r_\mathrm{med}$ depends on projected size measurements as a function of S\'ersic index and intrinsic axis ratios, and demonstrate its relative independence of these parameters. As an application we show that the projected semi-major axis length of the ellipse enclosing 50% of the light is an unbiased proxy for $r_\mathrm{med}$, with small galaxy-to-galaxy scatter of $\sim$10% (1$\sigma$), under the condition that the variation in triaxiality within the population is small. For galaxy populations with unknown or a large range in triaxiality an unbiased proxy for $r_\mathrm{med}$ is $1.3\times R_{e}$, where $R_{e}$ is the circularized half-light radius, with galaxy-to-galaxy scatter of 20-30% (1$\sigma$). We also describe how inclinations can be estimated for individual galaxies based on the measured projected shape and prior knowledge of the intrinsic shape distribution of the corresponding galaxy population. We matched the 1.4 GHz local luminosity functions of star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and active galactic nuclei to the 1.4 GHz differential source counts from $0.25 \ \mu\mathrm{Jy}$ to 25 Jy using combinations of luminosity and density evolution. We present the most robust and complete local far-infrared (FIR)/radio luminosity correlation to date in a volume-limited sample of $\approx 4.3 \times 10^3$ nearby SFGs, finding that it is very tight but distinctly sub-linear: $L_\mathrm{FIR} \propto L_\mathrm{1.4\,GHz}^{0.85}$. If the local FIR/radio correlation does not evolve, the evolving 1.4 GHz luminosity function of SFGs yields the evolving star-formation rate density (SFRD) $\psi (M_\odot \ \mathrm{year}^{-1} \ \mathrm{Mpc}^{-3}$) as a function of time since the big bang. The SFRD measured at 1.4 GHz grows rapidly at early times, peaks at "cosmic noon" when $t \approx 3 \ \mathrm{Gyr}$ and $z \approx 2$, and subsequently decays with an $e$-folding time scale $\tau = 3.2 \ \mathrm{Gyr}$. The growth of galaxy clusters is energetic and may trigger and/or quench star formation and black hole activity. The ENISALA project is a collection of multiwavelength observations aimed at understanding how large-scale structure drives galaxy and black hole evolution. Here, we introduce optical spectroscopy of over 800 H$\alpha$ emission-line galaxies, selected in 14 z~0.15-0.31 galaxy clusters, spanning a range of masses and dynamical states. We investigate the nature of the emission lines in relation to the host galaxy properties, its location within the cluster, and the properties of the parent cluster. We uncover remarkable differences between mergers and relaxed clusters. The majority of H$\alpha$ emission-line galaxies in merging cluster fields are located within 3 Mpc of their center. A large fraction of these line-emitters in merging clusters are powered by star formation irrespective of cluster-centric radius, while the rest are powered by active galactic nuclei. Star-forming galaxies are rare within 3 Mpc of relaxed clusters and active galactic nuclei are most abundant at their outskirts (~1.5-3 Mpc). We discover a population of star-forming galaxies with large equivalent widths and blue UV-optical colors, found exclusively in the merging clusters in our sample. The widespread emission-line activity in merging clusters is likely supported by triggered activity in recently-accreted, gas-rich galaxies. By contrast, our observations for relaxed clusters match established models, in which black hole activity is enhanced at the virial radius and star-formation is quenched within the infall region. The dark matter halos that surround Milky Way-like galaxies in cosmological simulations are, to first order, triaxial. Nearly 30 years ago it was predicted that such triaxial dark matter halos should exhibit steady figure rotation or tumbling motions for durations of several gigayears. The angular frequency of figure rotation predicted by cosmological simulations is described by a log-normal distribution of pattern speed with a median value 0.15hkm/s/kpc (~ 0.15h rad/Gyr ~ 9h deg/Gyr) and a width of 0.83km/s/kpc. These pattern speeds are so small that they have generally been considered both unimportant and undetectable. In this work we show that even this extremely slow figure rotation can significantly alter the structure of extended stellar streams produced by the tidal disruption of satellites in the Milky Way halo. We simulate the behavior of a Sagittarius-like polar tidal stream in triaxial dark matter halos with different shapes, when the halos are rotated about the three principal axes. For pattern speeds typical of cosmological halos we demonstrate, for the first time, that a Sagittarius-like tidal stream would be altered to a degree that is detectable even with current observations. This discovery will potentially allow for a future measurement of figure rotation of the Milky Way's dark halo, and perhaps enabling the first evidence of this relatively unexplored prediction of LambdaCDM., 23 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. We present new measurements of the cosmic cold molecular gas evolution out to redshift 6 based on systematic mining of the ALMA public archive in the COSMOS deep field (A3COSMOS). Our A3COSMOS dataset contains ~700 galaxies (0.3 < z < 6) with high-confidence ALMA detections in the (sub-)millimeter continuum and multi-wavelength spectral energy distributions (SEDs). Multiple gas mass calibration methods are compared and biases in band conversions (from observed ALMA wavelength to rest-frame Rayleigh-Jeans(RJ)-tail continuum) have been tested. Combining our A3COSMOS sample with ~1,000 CO-observed galaxies at 0 < z < 4 (75% at z < 0.1), we parameterize galaxies' molecular gas depletion time and molecular gas to stellar mass ratio (gas fraction) each as a function of the stellar mass, offset from the star-forming main sequence (Delta MS) and cosmic age (or redshift). Our proposed functional form provides a statistically better fit to current data (than functional forms in the literature), and implies a "downsizing" effect (i.e., more-massive galaxies evolve earlier than less-massive ones) and "mass-quenching" (gas consumption slows down with cosmic time for massive galaxies but speeds up for low-mass ones). Adopting galaxy stellar mass functions and applying our function for gas mass calculation, we for the first time infer the cosmic cold molecular gas density evolution out to redshift 6 and find agreement with CO blind surveys as well as semi-analytic modeling. These together provide a coherent picture of cold molecular gas, SFR and stellar mass evolution in galaxies across cosmic time., 41 pages, 23 figures, 3 tables, resubmitted to ApJ after addressing referee's comments. In the hierarchical theory of galaxy formation, a galaxy overdensity is a hallmark of a massive cosmic structure. However, it is less well understood how different types of galaxies trace the underlying large-scale structure. Motivated by the discovery of a z=3.13 protocluster, we examine how the same structure is populated by Ly$\alpha$-emitting galaxies (LAEs). To this end, we have undertaken a deep narrow-band imaging survey sampling Ly$\alpha$ emission at this redshift. Of the 93 LAE candidates within a 36'x36'~(70x70~Mpc^2) field, 21 galaxies form a significant surface overdensity (delta_g=3.3+/-0.9), which is spatially segregated from the Lyman break galaxy (LBG) overdensity. One possible interpretation is that they trace two separate structures of comparable masses (~ 10^{15}M_sun) where the latter is hosted by a halo assembled at an earlier time. We speculate that the dearth of LAEs in the LBG overdensity region may signal the role of halo assembly bias in galaxy formation, which would suggest that different search techniques may be biased accordingly to the formation age or dynamical state of the host halo. The median Ly$\alpha$- and UV luminosity is 30--70\% higher for the protocluster LAEs relative to the field. This difference cannot be explained by the galaxy overdensity alone, and may require a top-heavy mass function, higher star formation efficiency for protocluster halos, or suppression of galaxy formation in low-mass halos. A luminous Ly$\alpha$ blob and an ultramassive galaxy found in this region paint a picture consistent with the expected early growth of galaxies in clusters., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

The discovery of quasars few hundred megayears after the Big Bang represents a major challenge to our understanding of black holes and galaxy formation and evolution. Their luminosity is produced by extreme gas accretion onto black holes, which already reached masses of 10$^9$ M$_\odot$ by z ~ 6. Simultaneously, their host galaxies form hundreds of stars per year, using up gas in the process. To understand which environments are able to sustain the rapid formation of these extreme sources we started a VLT/MUSE effort aimed at characterizing the surroundings of a sample of 5.7 < z < 6.6 quasars dubbed: the Reionization Epoch QUasar InvEstigation with MUSE (REQUIEM) survey. We here present results of our searches for extended Ly-Alpha halos around the first 31 targets observed as part of this program. Reaching 5-sigma surface brightness limits of 0.1-1.1 x 10$^{-17}$ erg/s/cm$^2$/arcsec$^2$ over a 1 arcsec$^2$ aperture, we were able to unveil the presence of 12 Ly-Alpha nebulae, 8 of which are newly discovered. The detected nebulae show a variety of emission properties and morphologies with luminosities ranging from 8 x 10$^{42}$ to 2 x 10$^{44}$ erg/s, FWHMs between 300 and 1700 km/s, sizes < 30 pkpc, and redshifts consistent with those of the quasar host galaxies. As the first statistical and homogeneous investigation of the circum-galactic medium of massive galaxies at the end of the reionization epoch, the REQUIEM survey enables the study of the evolution of the cool gas surrounding quasars in the first 3 Gyr of the Universe. A comparison with the extended Ly-Alpha emission observed around bright (M$_{1450}$ < -25 mag) quasars at intermediate redshift indicates little variations on the properties of the cool gas from z ~ 6 to z ~ 3 followed by a decline in the average surface brightness down to z ~ 2., Comment: 53 pages, too many figures. The cusp-core problem is one of the main challenges of the cold dark matter paradigm on small scales: the density of a dark matter halo is predicted to rise rapidly toward the center as rho ~ r^alpha with alpha between -1 and -1.5, while such a cuspy profile has not been clearly observed. We have carried out the spatially-resolved mapping of gas dynamics toward a nearby ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG), AGC 242019. The derived rotation curve of dark matter is well fitted by the cuspy profile as described by the Navarro-Frenk-White model, while the cored profiles including both the pseudo-isothermal and Burkert models are excluded. The halo has alpha=-(0.90+-0.08) at the innermost radius of 0.67 kpc, Mhalo=(3.5+-1.2)E10 Msun and a small concentration of 2.0+-0.36. AGC 242019 challenges alternatives of cold dark matter by constraining the particle mass of fuzzy dark matter to be < 0.11E-22 eV or > 3.3E-22 eV , the cross section of self-interacting dark matter to be < 1.63 cm2/g, and the particle mass of warm dark matter to be > 0.23 keV, all of which are in tension with other constraints. The modified Newtonian dynamics is also inconsistent with a shallow radial acceleration relationship of AGC 242019. For the feedback scenario that transforms a cusp to a core, AGC 242019 disagrees with the stellar-to-halo-mass-ratio dependent model, but agrees with the star-formation-threshold dependent model. As a UDG, AGC 242019 is in a dwarf-size halo with weak stellar feedback, late formation time, a normal baryonic spin and low star formation efficiency (SFR/gas)., ApJ accepted, 25 pages, 17 figures

We present a deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging study of two dwarf galaxies in the halos of Local Volume Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) analogs. These dwarfs were discovered as part of our Subaru+Hyper Suprime-Cam MADCASH survey: MADCASH-1, which is a satellite of NGC 2403 (D~3.2 Mpc), and MADCASH-2, a previously unknown dwarf galaxy near NGC 4214 (D~3.0 Mpc). Our HST data reach >3.5 mag below the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) of each dwarf, allowing us to derive their structural parameters and assess their stellar populations. We measure TRGB distances ($D=3.41^{+0.24}_{-0.23}$ Mpc for MADCASH-1, and $D=3.00^{+0.13}_{-0.15}$ Mpc for MADCASH-2), and confirm their associations with their host galaxies. MADCASH-1 is a predominantly old, metal-poor stellar system (age ~13.5 Gyr, [M/H] ~ -2.0), similar to many Local Group dwarfs. Modelling of MADCASH-2's CMD suggests that it contains mostly ancient, metal-poor stars (age ~13.5 Gyr, [M/H] ~ -2.0), but that ~10% of its stellar mass was formed 1.1--1.5 Gyr ago, and ~1% was formed 400--500 Myr ago. Given its recent star formation, we search MADCASH-2 for neutral hydrogen using the Green Bank Telescope, but find no emission and estimate an upper limit on the HI mass of $, 20 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables; minor edits to match accepted version published in ApJ

Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are standardizable candles, but for over a decade, there has been a debate on how to properly account for their correlations with host galaxy properties. Using the Bayesian hierarchical model UNITY, we simultaneously fit for the SN Ia light curve and host galaxy standardization parameters on a set of 103 Sloan Digital Sky Survey II SNe Ia. We investigate the influences of host stellar mass, along with both localized ($r3\sigma$ in the two-dimensional posterior space. In addition, the unexplained scatter of SNe Ia absolute magnitude post standardization, is reduced from $0.122^{+0.019}_{-0.018}$ to $0.109\pm0.017$ mag, or $\sim10\%$. We do not see similar improvements when using global ages. This combination is consistent with either metallicity or line-of-sight dust affecting the observed luminosity of SNe Ia., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, submitted to ApJ

We investigate the mass-velocity dispersion relation (MVDR) in 29 galaxy clusters in the HIghest X-ray FLUx Galaxy Cluster Sample (HIFLUGCS). We measure the spatially resolved, line-of-sight velocity dispersion profiles of these clusters, which we find to be mostly flat at large radii, reminiscent of the rotation curves of galaxies. We discover a tight empirical relation between the baryonic mass $M_\mathrm{bar}$ and the flat velocity dispersion $\sigma$ of the member galaxies, i.e. MVDR, $\log(M_\mathrm{bar}/M_\odot)=4.1^{+0.4}_{-0.4}\,\log(\sigma/\mathrm{km}\,\mathrm{s}^{-1})+1.6^{+1.0}_{-1.3}$, with the lognormal intrinsic scatter of $12^{+3}_{-3}\%$. The residuals of the MVDR are uncorrelated with other cluster properties like temperature, cluster radius, baryonic mass surface density, and redshift. These characteristics are reminiscent of the MVDR for individual galaxies, albeit about ten times larger characteristic acceleration scale. The cluster baryon fraction falls short of the cosmic value, exposing a problem: the discrepancy increases systematically for clusters of lower mass and lower baryonic acceleration., Comment: Version accepted by ApJ; 10 pages, 5 figures, 2 Tables

The classification of dark matter halos as isolated hosts or subhalos is critical for our understanding of structure formation and the galaxy-halo connection. Most commonly, subhalos are defined to reside inside a spherical overdensity boundary such as the virial radius. The resulting host-subhalo relations depend sensitively on the somewhat arbitrary overdensity threshold, but the impact of this dependence is rarely quantified. The recently proposed splashback radius tends to be larger and to include more subhalos than even the largest spherical overdensity boundaries. We systematically investigate the dependence of the subhalo fraction on the radius definition and show that it can vary by factors of unity between different spherical overdensity definitions. Using splashback radii can yet double the abundance of subhalos compared to the virial definition. We also quantify the abundance of flyby (or backsplash) halos, hosts that used to be subhalos in the past. We show that the majority of these objects are mislabeled satellites that are naturally classified as subhalos when we use the splashback radius. We show that the subhalo fraction can be understood as a universal function of only peak height and the slope of the linear power spectrum. We provide a simple fitting function that captures our simulation results to 20% accuracy across a wide range of halo masses, redshifts, and cosmologies. Finally, we demonstrate that splashback radii significantly change our understanding of satellite and flyby galaxies in the Local Group., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures. The star-forming emission line galaxies (ELGs) with strong [OII] doublet are one of the main spectroscopic targets for the ongoing and upcoming fourth generation galaxy redshift surveys. In this work, we measure the [OII] luminosity $L_{\mathrm{[OII]}}$ and the near-ultraviolet band absolute magnitude $M_{\mathrm{NUV}}$ for a large sample of galaxies in the redshift range of $0.6\leq z, Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures, accepted by ApJ

The local determination of the Hubble Constant sits at a crossroad. Current estimates of the local expansion rate of the Universe differ by about 1.7-sigma, derived from the Cepheid and TRGB based calibrations, applied to type Ia supernovae. To help elucidate possible sources of systematic error causing the tension, we show in this study the recently developed distance indicator, the J-region Asymptotic Giant Branch (JAGB) method (arXiv:2005.10792), can serve as an independent cross-check and comparison with other local distance indicators. Furthermore, we make the case that the JAGB method has substantial potential as an independent, precise and accurate calibrator of type Ia supernovae for the determination of H0. Using the Local Group galaxy, WLM we present distance comparisons between the JAGB method, a TRGB measurement at near-infrared (JHK) wavelengths, a TRGB measurement in the optical I band, and a multi-wavelength Cepheid period-luminosity relation determination. We find: $\mu_0$ (JAGB) = 24.97 +/- 0.02 (stat) +/- 0.04 (sys) mag, $\mu_0$ (TRGB NIR) = 24.98 +/- 0.04 stat) +/- 0.07 (sys) mag, $\mu_0$ (TRGB F814W) = 24.93 +/- 0.02 (stat) +/- 0.06 (sys) mag, $\mu_0$ (Cepheids) = 24.98 +/- 0.03 (stat) +/- 0.04 (sys) mag. All four methods are in good agreement, confirming the local self-consistency of the four distance scales at the 3% level, and adding confidence that the JAGB method is as accurate and as precise a distance indicator as either of the other three astrophysically-based methods., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 21 pages, 10 figures, 5 tables

Dust properties within a galaxy are known to change from the diffuse medium to dense clouds due to increased local gas density. However, the question of whether dust properties change with redshift remains elusive. In this paper, using the fact that the mean radiation intensity of the interstellar medium (ISM) of star-forming galaxies increases with redshift, we show that dust properties should change due to increasing efficiency of rotational disruption by radiative torques, an effect named RAdiative Torque Disruption (RATD). We first show that, due to RATD, the size distribution of interstellar dust varies with redshift, such as dust grains become smaller at higher $z$. We model the extinction curves and find that the curve becomes steeper with increasing redshift. The ratio of total-to-selective extinction, $R_{V}$, decreases with redshift and achieves low values of $R_{V}\sim 1.5-2.5$ for grains having a composite structure. We also find that dust properties change with the local gas density due to RATD, but the change is dominated by the radiation field for the diffuse ISM. The low values of $R_{V}$ implied by RATD of interstellar dust could reproduce anomalous dust extinction observed toward type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC)-like extinction curves with a steep far-UV rise toward high-z galaxies. Fluctuations in $R_{V}$ due to interstellar turbulence and varying radiation intensity may resolve the tension in measurements of the Hubble constant using SNe Ia. Measurement of fluctuations in diffuse HI 21 cm background radiation from the post-reionization epoch (z < 6) is a promising avenue to probe the large-scale structure of the Universe and understand the evolution of galaxies. We observe the European Large-Area ISO Survey-North 1 (ELAIS-N1) field at 300-500 MHz using the upgraded Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) and employ the 'foreground avoidance' technique to estimate the HI 21 cm power spectrum in the redshift range z = 1.96-3.58. Given the possible systematics that may remain in the data, we find the most stringent upper limits on the spherically averaged 21 cm power spectra at k~1.0 Mpc$^{-1}$ are (58.87 mK)$^2$, (61.49 mK)$^2$, (60.89 mK)$^2$, (105.85 mK)$^2$ at z = 1.96,2.19,2.62 and 3.58, respectively. We use this to constrain the product of neutral HI mass density (Omega_HI) and HI bias (b_HI) to the underlying dark matter density field, [Omega_HI*b_HI], as 0.09,0.11,0.12,0.24 at z=1.96,2.19,2.62,3.58, respectively. To the best of our knowledge these are the first limits on the HI 21 cm power spectra at the redshift range z = 1.96 - 3.58 and would play a significant role to constrain the models of galaxy formation and evolution., Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters (APJL)

In this work we expand upon the Tomographic Absorption Reconstruction and Density Inference Scheme (TARDIS) in order to include multiple tracers while reconstructing matter density fields at Cosmic Noon (z ~ 2-3). In particular, we jointly reconstruct the underlying density field from simulated Lyman-Alpha forest observations at $z\sim 2.5$ and an overlapping galaxy survey. We find that these data are synergistic, with the Lyman Alpha forest providing reconstruction of low density regions and galaxy surveys tracing the density peaks. We find a more accurate power spectra reconstruction going to higher scales when fitting these two data-sets simultaneously than if using either one individually. When applied to cosmic web analysis, we find performing the joint analysis is equivalent to a Lyman Alpha survey with significantly increased sight-line spacing. Since we reconstruct the velocity field and matter field jointly, we demonstrate the ability to evolve the mock observed volume further to z=0, allowing us to create a rigorous definition of "proto-cluster" as regions which will evolve into clusters. We apply our reconstructions to study protocluster structure and evolution, finding for realistic survey parameters we can provide accurate mass estimates of the z \approx 2 structures and their z = 0 fate., 16 pages, 12 figures

Microlensing not only brings extra magnification lightcurves on top of the intrinsic ones but also shifts them in time domain, making the actual time-delays between images of strongly lensed active galactic nucleus change on the $\sim$ day(s) light-crossing time scale of the emission region. The microlensing-induced time-delays would bias strong lens time-delay cosmography if uncounted. However, due to the uncertainties of the disk size and the disk model, the impact is hard to accurately estimate. In this work, we study how to reduce the bias with designed observation strategy based on a standard disk model. We find long time monitoring of the images could alleviate the impact since it averages the microlensing time-lag maps due to the peculia motion of the source relative to the lens galaxy. In addition, images in bluer bands correspond to smaller disk sizes and therefore benefit time-delay measurements as well. We conduct a simulation based on a PG 1115+080-like lensed quasar. The results show the time-delay dispersions caused by microlensing can be reduced by $\sim40\%$ with 20-year lightcurves while u band relative to r band reduces $\sim75\%$ of the dispersions. Nevertheless, such an effect can not be totally eliminated in any cases. Feedback likely plays a vital role in the formation of dwarf galaxies. While stellar processes have long been considered the main source of feedback, recent studies have revealed tantalizing signs of AGN feedback in dwarf galaxies. In this paper, we report the results from an integral-field spectroscopic study of a sample of eight dwarf galaxies with known AGN and suspected outflows. Outflows are detected in seven of them. The outflows are fast, with 50-percentile (median) velocity of up to $\sim$240 km s$^{-1}$ and 80-percentile line width reaching $\sim$1200 km s$^{-1}$, in clear contrast with the more quiescent kinematics of the host gas and stellar components. The outflows are generally spatially extended on a scale of several hundred pc to a few kpc, although our data do not clearly resolve the outflows in three targets. The outflows appear to be primarily photoionized by the AGN rather than shocks or young, massive stars. The kinematics and energetics of these outflows suggest that they are primarily driven by the AGN, although the star formation activity in these objects may also contribute to the energy input. A small but non-negligible portion of the outflowing material likely escapes the main body of the host galaxy and contributes to the enrichment of the circumgalactic medium. We present new observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array of the 122um and 205um fine-structure line emission of singly-ionised nitrogen in a strongly lensed starburst galaxy at z=2.6. The 122/205um [NII] line ratio is sensitive to electron density, n_e, in the ionised interstellar medium, and we use this to measure n_e~300cm^-3 averaged across the galaxy. This is over an order of magnitude higher than the Milky Way average, but comparable to localised Galactic star-forming regions. Combined with observations of the atomic carbon (CI(1-0)) and carbon monoxide (CO(4-3)) in the same system, we reveal the conditions in this intensely star-forming system. The majority of the molecular interstellar medium has been driven to high density, and the resultant conflagration of star formation produces a correspondingly dense ionised phase, presumably co-located with myriad HII regions that litter the gas-rich disk., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures. Whereas cold dark matter (CDM) simulations predict central dark matter cusps with densities that diverge as $\rho$(r)$\sim$ 1/r observations often indicate constant density cores with finite central densities $\rho_0$ and a flat density distribution within a core radius r$_0$. This paper investigates whether this core-cusp problem can be solved by fuzzy dark matter (FDM), a hypothetical particle with a mass of order m$\approx$10$^{-22}$eV and a corresponding de Broglie wavelength on astrophysical scales. We show that galaxies with CDM halo virial masses M$_{vir} \leq 10^{11}$M$_{\odot}$ follow two core scaling relations. In addition to the well known universal core column density $\Sigma_0 \equiv \rho_0 \times$r$_0$ = 75 M$_{\odot}$pc$^{-2}$ core radii increase with virial masses as r$_0 \sim$ M$_{vir}^{\gamma}$ with $\gamma$ of order unity. Using the simulations by Schive et al. (2014) we demonstrate that FDM can explain the r$_0$-M$_{vir}$ scaling relation if the virial masses of the observed galaxy sample scale with formation redshift z as M$_{vir}\sim$(1+z)$^{-0.4}$. The observed constant $\Sigma_0$ is however in complete disagreement with FDM cores which are characterised by a steep dependence $\Sigma_0 \sim$r$_0^{-3}$, independent of z. More high-resolution simulations are now required to confirm the Schive et al. simulations and explore especially the transition region between the soliton core and the surrounding halo. If these results hold, FDM can be ruled out as the origin of observed dark matter cores and other physical processes are required to account for their formation., Comment: 14 pages, 1 figure, ApJ, in press

We present the clustering properties of low-$z$ $(z\leq1.4)$ galaxies selected by the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program Wide layer over $145$ deg$^{2}$. The wide-field and multi-wavelength observation yields $5,064,770$ galaxies at $0.3\leq z\leq1.4$ with photometric redshifts and physical properties. This enables the accurate measurement of angular correlation functions and subsequent halo occupation distribution (HOD) analysis allows the connection between baryonic properties and dark halo properties. The fraction of less-massive satellite galaxies at $z\lesssim1$ is found to be almost constant at $\sim20\%$, but it gradually decreases beyond $M_{\star} \sim 10^{10.4}h^{-2}M_{\odot}$. However, the abundance of satellite galaxies at $z>1$ is quite small even for less-massive galaxies due to the rarity of massive centrals at high-$z$. This decreasing trend is connected to the small satellite fraction of Lyman break galaxies at $z>3$. The stellar-to-halo mass ratios at $0.3\leq z\leq1.4$ are almost consistent with the predictions obtained using the latest empirical model; however, we identify small excesses from the theoretical model at the massive end. The pivot halo mass is found to be unchanged at $10^{11.9-12.1}h^{-1}M_{\odot}$ at $0.3\leq z\leq1.4$, and we systematically show that $10^{12}h^{-1}M_{\odot}$ is a universal pivot halo mass up to $z\sim5$ that is derived using only the clustering/HOD analyses. Nevertheless, halo masses with peaked instantaneous baryon conversion efficiencies are much smaller than the pivot halo mass regardless of a redshift, and the most efficient stellar-mass assembly is thought to be in progress in $10^{11.0-11.5}h^{-1}M_{\odot}$ dark haloes., Comment: 33 pages, 16 figures, submitted to ApJ

It has been suggested that the central stellar velocity dispersion of galaxies can trace dark matter halo mass directly. We test this hypothesis using a complete spectroscopic sample of isolated galaxies surrounded by faint satellite galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12. We apply a friends-of-friends algorithm with projected linking length $��D < 100$ kpc and radial velocity linking length $��V < 1000$ km s$^{-1}$ to construct our sample. Our sample includes 2807 isolated galaxies with 3417 satellite galaxies at $0.01 < z < 0.14$. We divide the sample into two groups based on the primary galaxy color: red and blue primary galaxies separated at $(g-r)_{0} = 0.85$. The central stellar velocity dispersions of the primary galaxies are proportional to the luminosities and stellar masses of the same galaxies. Stacking the sample based on the central velocity dispersion of the primary galaxies, we derive the velocity dispersions of their satellite galaxies, which trace the dark matter halo mass of the primary galaxies. The system velocity dispersion of the satellite galaxies shows a remarkably tight correlation with the central velocity dispersion of the primary galaxies for both red and blue samples. In particular, the slope of the relation is identical to 1 for red primary systems. This tight relation suggests that the central stellar velocity dispersion of galaxies is indeed an efficient and robust tracer for dark matter halo mass. We have used the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to carry out a search for CO (3$-$2) or (4$-$3) emission from the fields of 12 high-metallicity ([M/H]~$\geq -0.72$\,dex) damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorbers (DLAs) at $z \approx 1.7-2.6$. We detected CO emission from galaxies in the fields of five DLAs (two of which have been reported earlier), obtaining high molecular gas masses, $\rm M_{mol} \approx (1.3 - 20.7) \times (\alpha_{\rm CO}/4.36) \times 10^{10} \; M_\odot$. The impact parameters of the CO emitters to the QSO sightline lie in the range $b \approx 5.6-100$~kpc, with the three new CO detections having $b \lesssim 15$~kpc. The highest CO line luminosities and inferred molecular gas masses are associated with the highest-metallicity DLAs, with [M/H]~$\gtrsim -0.3$\,dex. The high inferred molecular gas masses may be explained by a combination of a stellar mass-metallicity relation and a high molecular gas-to-stars mass ratio in high-redshift galaxies; the DLA galaxies identified by our CO searches have properties consistent with those of emission-selected samples. None of the DLA galaxies detected in CO emission were identified in earlier optical or near-IR searches and vice-versa; DLA galaxies earlier identified in optical/near-IR searches were not detected in CO emission. The high ALMA CO and C[{\sc ii}]~158$\mu$m detection rate in high-$z$, high-metallicity DLA galaxies has revolutionized the field, allowing the identification of dusty, massive galaxies associated with high-$z$ DLAs. The H{\sc i}-absorption criterion identifying DLAs selects the entire high-$z$ galaxy population, including dusty and UV-bright galaxies, in a wide range of environments., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures; accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal Letters. Quenched post-starburst galaxies (QPSBs) are a rare but important class of galaxies that show signs of rapid cessation or recent rejuvenation of star formation. A recent observation shows that about half of QPSBs have large amounts of cold gas. This molecular CO sample is, however, too small and is not without limitations. Our work aims to verify previous results by applying a new method to study a uniformly selected sample, more than 10 times larger. In particular, we present detailed analysis of H$\alpha$/H$\beta$ ratios of face-on QPSBs at $z = 0.02 - 0.15$ and with $M_\star = 10^{10}-10^{11}\,M_\odot$. We interpret the H$\alpha$/H$\beta$ ratios by applying our recent gas mass calibration, which is based on non-PSB galaxies but predicts gas masses that are consistent with CO observations of $\sim 100$ PSBs. We estimate the molecular gas by either using PSBs with well-measured H$\alpha$/H$\beta$ ratios or by measuring them from stacked spectra. Our analysis reveals that QPSBs have a wide range of H$\alpha$/H$\beta$ ratios and molecular gas fractions that overlap with the typical gas fractions of star-forming or quiescent galaxies: H$\alpha$/H$\beta \approx 3-8$ and $f_\mathrm{H_2} \approx 1\%-20\%$ with median $f_\mathrm{H_2} \approx 4\%-6\%$, which correspond to $M_\mathrm{H_2} \approx (1-3) \times 10^{9} \,M_\odot$. Our results indicate that large reservoirs of cold gas are still present in significant numbers of QPSBs, and that they arguably were not removed or destroyed by feedback from active galactic nuclei., Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures, Published ApJ,900,107

We present the physical properties of AKARI sources without optical counterparts in optical images from the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) on the Subaru telescope. Using the AKARI infrared (IR) source catalog and HSC optical catalog, we select 583 objects that do not have HSC counterparts in the AKARI North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) wide survey field ($\sim 5$ deg$^{2}$). Because the HSC limiting magnitude is deep ($g_{\rm AB}$ $\sim 28.6$), these are good candidates for extremely red star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and/or active galactic nuclei (AGNs), possibly at high redshifts. We compile multi-wavelength data out to 500 $\mu$m and use it for Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) fitting with CIGALE to investigate the physical properties of AKARI galaxies without optical counterparts. We also compare their physical quantities with AKARI mid-IR selected galaxies with HSC counterparts. The estimated redshifts of AKARI objects without HSC counterparts range up to $z\sim 4$, significantly higher than that of AKARI objects with HSC counterparts. We find that: (i) 3.6 $-$ 4.5 $\mu$m color, (ii) AGN luminosity, (iii) stellar mass, (iv) star formation rate, and (v) $V$-band dust attenuation in the interstellar medium of AKARI objects without HSC counterparts are systematically larger than those of AKARI objects with counterparts. These results suggest that our sample includes luminous, heavily dust-obscured SFGs/AGNs at $z\sim 1-4$ that are missed by previous optical surveys, providing very interesting targets for the coming James Webb Space Telescope era., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, and 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

Weak gravitational lensing is one of the most promising cosmological probes to constrain dark matter, dark energy, and the nature of gravity at cosmic scales. Intrinsic alignments (IAs) of galaxies have been recognized as one of the most serious systematic effects facing gravitational lensing. Such alignments must be isolated and removed to obtain a pure lensing signal. Furthermore, the alignments are related to the processes of galaxy formation, so their extracted signal can help in understanding such formation processes and improving their theoretical modeling. We report in this Letter the first detection of the gravitational shear--intrinsic shape (GI) correlation and the intrinsic shape--galaxy density (Ig) correlation using the self-calibration method in a photometric redshift survey. These direct measurements are made from the KiDS-450 photometric galaxy survey with a significance of 3.65$\sigma$ in the third bin for the Ig correlation, and 3.51$\sigma$ for the GI cross-correlation between the third and fourth bins. The self-calibration method uses the information available from photometric surveys without needing to specify an IA model and will play an important role in validating IA models and IA mitigation in future surveys such as the Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time, Euclid, and WFIRST., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures

We apply the near-infrared J-region Asymptotic Giant Branch (JAGB) method, recently introduced by Madore \& Freedman (2020), to measure the distances to 14 nearby galaxies out to 4 Mpc. We use the geometric detached eclipsing binary (DEB) distances to the LMC and SMC as independent zero-point calibrators. We find excellent agreement with previously published distances based on the Tip of the Red Giant Branch (TRGB): the JAGB distance determinations (including the LMC and SMC) agree in the mean to within Delta(JAGB-TRGB) = +0.025 +/- 0.013 mag, just over 1%, where the TRGB I-band zero point is M_I = ~-4.05 mag. With further development and testing, the JAGB method has the potential to provide an independent calibration of Type Ia supernovae, especially with JWST. The JAGB stars (with M_J = -6.20 mag) can be detected farther than the fainter TRGB stars, allowing greater numbers of calibrating galaxies for the determination of Ho. Along with the TRGB and Cepheids, JAGB stars are amenable to theoretical understanding and further refined empirical calibration. A preliminary test shows little dependence, if any, of the JAGB magnitude with metallicity of the parent galaxy. These early results suggest that the JAGB method has considerable promise for providing high-precision distances to galaxies in the local universe that are independent of distances derived from the Leavitt Law and/or the TRGB method; and it has numerous and demonstrable advantages over the possible use of Mira variables., 33 pages, 6 figures

We present a detailed comparative systematic study using a sample of 221 Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) galaxies in comparison to a redshift matched sample of 154 Broad-line Seyfert 1 (BLSy1) galaxies based on their observations using ROSAT and/or XMM-Newton telescopes in soft X-ray band (0.1-2.0 keV). A homogeneous analysis is carried out to estimate their soft X-ray photon indices ($\Gamma^{s}_{X}$) and its correlations with other parameters of nuclear activities such as Eddington ratios (R$_\mathrm{Edd}$), bolometric luminosities (L$_\mathrm{bol}$), black hole masses (M$_\mathrm{BH}$) and the widths of the broad component of H$\beta$ lines (FWHM(H$\beta$)). In our analysis, we found clear evidence of the difference in the $\Gamma^{s}_{X}$ and R$_\mathrm{Edd}$ distributions among NLSy1 and BLSy1 galaxies, with steeper $\Gamma^{s}_{X}$ and higher R$_\mathrm{Edd}$ for the former. Such a difference also exists in the spectral indices distribution in hard X-ray ($\Gamma^{h}_{X}$), based on the analysis of 53 NLSy1 and 46 BLSy1 galaxies in the 2-10 keV energy band. The difference in R$_\mathrm{Edd}$ distributions does exist even after applying the average correction for the difference in the inclination angle of NLSy1 and BLSy1 galaxies. We also estimated R$_\mathrm{Edd}$, based on SED fitting of 34 NLSy1 and 30 BLSy1 galaxies over the 0.3-10 keV energy band and found that results are still consistent with R$_\mathrm{Edd}$ estimates based on the optical bolometric luminosity. Our analysis suggests that the higher R$_\mathrm{Edd}$ in NLSy1 is responsible for its steeper X-ray spectral slope compared to the BLSy1, consistent with the disc-corona model as proposed for the luminous AGNs., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

DES Collaboration: et al. arXiv:2002.00974v2, While many studies have shown a correlation between properties of the light curves of SNe Ia and properties of their host galaxies, it remains unclear what is driving these correlations. We introduce a new direct method to study these correlations by analyzing "parent" galaxies that host multiple SNe Ia "siblings." Here, we search the Dark Energy Survey SN sample, one of the largest samples of discovered SNe, and find eight galaxies that hosted two likely SNe Ia. Comparing the light-curve properties of these SNe and recovered distances from the light curves, we find no better agreement between properties of SNe in the same galaxy as any random pair of galaxies, with the exception of the SN light-curve stretch. We show at 2.8σ significance that at least one-half of the intrinsic scatter of SNe Ia distance modulus residuals is not from common host properties. We also discuss the robustness with which we could make this evaluation with LSST, which will find 100× more pairs of galaxies, and pave a new line of study on the consistency of SNe Ia in the same parent galaxies. Recent observations have found that many $z\sim 6$ quasar fields lack galaxies. This unexpected lack of galaxies may potentially be explained by quasar radiation feedback. In this paper I present a suite of 3D radiative transfer cosmological simulations of quasar fields. I find that quasar radiation suppresses star formation in low mass galaxies, mainly by photo-dissociating their molecular hydrogen. Photo-heating also plays a role, but only after $\sim$100 Myr. However, galaxies which already have stellar mass above $10^5 M_\odot$ when the quasar turns on will not be suppressed significantly. Quasar radiative feedback suppresses the faint end of the galaxy luminosity function (LF) within $1$ pMpc, but to a far lesser degree than the field-to-field variation of the LF. Recent estimates point to abundances of z > 4 sub-millimeter (sub-mm) galaxies far above model predictions. The matter is still debated. According to some analyses the excess may be substantially lower than initially thought and perhaps accounted for by flux boosting and source blending. However, there is no general agreement on this conclusion. An excess of z > 6 dusty galaxies has also been reported albeit with poor statistics. On the other hand, evidence of a top-heavy initial mass function (IMF) in high-z starburst galaxies has been reported in the past decades. This would translate into a higher sub-mm luminosity of dusty galaxies at fixed star formation rate, i.e., into a higher abundance of bright high-z sub-mm galaxies than expected for a universal Chabrier IMF. Exploiting our physical model for high-z proto-spheroidal galaxies, we find that part of the excess can be understood in terms of an IMF somewhat top-heavier than Chabrier. Such IMF is consistent with that recently proposed to account for the low 13C/18O abundance ratio in four dusty starburst galaxies at z = 2-3. However, extreme top-heavy IMFs are inconsistent with the sub-mm counts at z > 4., ApJ accepted

We present a measurement of the Hubble constant made using geometric distance measurements to megamaser-hosting galaxies. We have applied an improved approach for fitting maser data and obtained better distance estimates for four galaxies previously published by the Megamaser Cosmology Project: UGC 3789, NGC 6264, NGC 6323, and NGC 5765b. Combining these updated distance measurements with those for the maser galaxies CGCG 074-064 and NGC 4258, and assuming a fixed velocity uncertainty of 250 km s$^{-1}$ associated with peculiar motions, we constrain the Hubble constant to be $H_0 = 73.9 \pm 3.0$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ independent of distance ladders and the cosmic microwave background. This best value relies solely on maser-based distance and velocity measurements, and it does not use any peculiar velocity corrections. Different approaches for correcting peculiar velocities do not modify $H_0$ by more than ${\pm}1{\sigma}$, with the full range of best-fit Hubble constant values spanning 71.8-76.9 km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$. We corroborate prior indications that the local value of $H_0$ exceeds the early-Universe value, with a confidence level varying from 95-99% for different treatments of the peculiar velocities., Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in ApJL

The fuzzy dark matter model (FDM, also known as quantum wave dark matter model) argues that light bosons with a mass of $\sim10^{-22}{\;{\rm eV}}$ are a possible candidate for dark matter in the Universe. One of the most important predictions of FDM is the formation of a soliton core instead of a density cusp at the center of galaxies. If FDM is the correct theory of dark matter, then the predicted soliton core can help to form the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) in the Milky Way. We present high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations of gas flow patterns to constrain the properties of the soliton core based on a realistic Milky Way potential. We find that a dense center is required to form a reasonable CMZ. The size and kinematics of the CMZ offer a relatively strong constraint on the inner enclosed mass profile of the Galaxy. If a soliton core is not considered, a compact nuclear bulge alone with a radially varying mass-to-light ratio can match the observed size and kinematics of the CMZ. A soliton core model with a mass of $\approx4.0\times10^8{\; {\rm M}_{\odot}}$ and a core radius of $\approx0.05{\;{\rm kpc}}$, together with a less massive nuclear bulge with a constant mass-to-light ratio, also agrees nicely with the current data. Such a FDM soliton core corresponds to a boson mass of $\sim2-7\times10^{-22}{\;{\rm eV}}$, which could be further constrained by the improved determination of the mass-to-light ratio in the Galactic center., Accepted for publication in ApJ. 14 pages, 7 figures

We present VLT/XSHOOTER rest-frame UV-optical spectra of 10 Hot Dust-Obscured Galaxies (Hot DOGs) at $z\sim2$ to investigate AGN diagnostics and to assess the presence and effect of ionized gas outflows. Most Hot DOGs in this sample are narrow-line dominated AGN (type 1.8 or higher), and have higher Balmer decrements than typical type 2 quasars. Almost all (8/9) sources show evidence for ionized gas outflows in the form of broad and blueshifted [O III] profiles, and some sources have such profiles in H$\alpha$ (5/7) or [O II] (3/6). Combined with the literature, these results support additional sources of obscuration beyond the simple torus invoked by AGN unification models. Outflow rates derived from the broad [O III] line ($\rm \gtrsim10^{3}\,M_{\odot}\,yr^{-1}$) are greater than the black hole accretion and star formation rates, with feedback efficiencies ($\sim0.1-1\%$) consistent with negative feedback to the host galaxy's star formation in merger-driven quasar activity scenarios. We find the broad emission lines in luminous, obscured quasars are often better explained by outflows within the narrow line region, and caution that black hole mass estimates for such sources in the literature may have substantial uncertainty. Regardless, we find lower bounds on the Eddington ratio for Hot DOGs near unity., Comment: 20 pages, accepted to ApJ, minor corrections (typos and references) in section 4.4

We present rest-frame far-infrared (FIR) and optical size measurements of AGN hosts and star-forming galaxies in the COSMOS field, enabled by high-resolution ALMA/1 mm (0.1 arcsec - 0.4 arcsec) and HST/F814W imaging (~ 0.1 arcsec). Our sample includes 27 galaxies at z, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a detailed high-resolution weak-lensing (WL) study of SPT-CL J2106-5844 at z=1.132, claimed to be the most massive system discovered at z > 1 in the South Pole Telescope Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SPT-SZ) survey. Based on the deep imaging data from the Advanced Camera for Surveys and Wide Field Camera 3 on-board the Hubble Space Telescope, we find that the cluster mass distribution is asymmetric, composed of a main clump and a subclump ~640 kpc west thereof. The central clump is further resolved into two smaller northwestern and southeastern substructures separated by ~150 kpc. We show that this rather complex mass distribution is more consistent with the cluster galaxy distribution than a unimodal distribution as previously presented. The northwestern substructure coincides with the BCG and X-ray peak while the southeastern one agrees with the location of the number density peak. These morphological features and the comparison with the X-ray emission suggest that the cluster might be a merging system. We estimate the virial mass of the cluster to be $M_{200c} = (10.4^{+3.3}_{-3.0}\pm1.0)~\times~10^{14}~M_{\odot}$, where the second error bar is the systematic uncertainty. Our result confirms that the cluster SPT-CL J2106-5844 is indeed the most massive cluster at z>1 known to date. We investigate a conceptual modification of the halo occupation distribution approach, using the halos' present-day maximal circular velocity, $\vmax$, as an alternative to halo mass. In particular, using a semi-analytic galaxy formation model applied to the Millennium WMAP7 simulation, we explore the extent that switching to $\vmax$ as the primary halo property incorporates the effects of assembly bias into the formalism. We consider fixed number density galaxy samples ranked by stellar mass and examine the variations in the halo occupation functions with either halo concentration or formation time. We find that using $\vmax$ results in a significant reduction in the occupancy variation of the central galaxies, particularly for concentration. The satellites occupancy variation on the other hand increases in all cases. We find effectively no change in the halo clustering dependence on concentration, for fixed bins of $\vmax$ compared to fixed halo mass. Most crucially, we calculate the impact of assembly bias on galaxy clustering by comparing the amplitude of clustering to that of a shuffled galaxy sample, finding that the level of galaxy assembly bias remains largely unchanged. Our results suggest that while using $\vmax$ as a proxy for halo mass diminishes some of occupancy variations exhibited in the galaxy-halo relation, it is not able to encapsulate the effects of assembly bias potentially present in galaxy clustering. The use of other more complex halo properties, such as $\vpeak$, the peak value of $\vmax$ over the assembly history, provides some improvement and warrants further investigation., 16 figures, 15 pages, submitted to ApJ

[Abridged] Luminous spheroids (M_V < - 21.50 +- 0.75 mag) contain partially depleted cores with sizes (R_ b) typically 0.02 - 0.5 kpc. However, galaxies with R_b > 0.5 kpc are rare and poorly understood. Here we perform detailed decompositions of the composite surface brightness profiles, extracted from archival Hubble Space Telescope and ground-based images, of 12 extremely luminous "large-core" galaxies that have R_b > 0.5 kpc and M_V < -23.50 +- 0.10 mag, fitting a core-S��rsic model to the galaxy spheroids. Using 28 "normal-core" (i.e., R_b < 0.5 kpc) galaxies and 1 "large-core" (i.e., R_b > 0.5 kpc) galaxy from the literature, we constructed a final sample of 41 core-S��rsic galaxies. We find that large-core spheroids (with stellar masses M_* > 10^12 M_sun) are not simple high-mass extensions of the less luminous normal-core spheroids having M_* ~ 8 x 10^10 - 10^12 M_sun. While the two types follow the same strong relations between the spheroid luminosity L_V and R_b (R_b prop L_V^(1.38 +- 0.13), and the spheroid half-light radius R_e (R_e prop L_V^(1.08 +- 0.09), for ellipticals plus BCGs), we discover a break in the core-S��rsic sigma-L_V relation occurring at M_V ~ -23.50 +- 0.10 mag. Furthermore, we find a strong log-linear R_b-M_BH relation for the 11 galaxies in the sample with directly determined SMBH masses M_BH---3/11 galaxies are large-core galaxies ---such that R_b prop M_BH^(0.83 +- 0.10). However, for the large-core galaxies the SMBH masses estimated from the M_BH-sigma and core-S��rsic M_BH-L relations are undermassive, by up to a factor of 40, relative to expectations from their large R_b values, confirming earlier results. Our findings suggest that large-core galaxies harbour overmassive SMBHs (M_BH > 10^10 M_sun), considerably (~ 3.7-15.6 sigma and ~ 0.6-1.7 sigma) larger than expectations from the spheroid sigma and L, respectively., 24 pages, 14 figures (some with low quality due to arXiv file size limitations), accepted (2019, October 14) for publication in ApJ, v2: surname/forename tagged correctly
