[abridged] We describe the first results from the NOAO Outer Limits Survey. The survey consists of deep images of 55 0.6x0.6 degree fields at distances up to 20 degrees from the LMC/SMC, and 10 controls. The fields probe the outer structure of the Clouds, the Magellanic Stream, the Leading Arm, and the wake of the new LMC orbit. Images were taken in 5 filters on the CTIO Blanco 4-m and Mosaic2 camera, with calibration at the CTIO 0.9-m. The CRI images reach depths below the oldest LMC/SMC main sequence (MS) turnoffs, yielding probes of structure combined with ability to measure stellar ages and metallicities. M and DDO51 images allow for discrimination of LMC and SMC giant stars from foreground dwarfs, allowing us to use giants as additional probes. From photometry of 8 fields at radii of 7-19 degrees N of the LMC bar, we find MS stars associated with the LMC to 16 degrees from the LMC center, while the much rarer giants can only be convincingly detected out to 11 degrees. In one control field, we see the signature of the Milky Way globular cluster NGC 1851. The CMDs show that while at 7-degree radius LMC populations as young as 500 Myr are present, at radii more than 11 degrees only the underlying old metal-poor population remains, demonstrating the existence of a population gradient. Even at extreme distances, the dominant age is much less than "globular Cluster age." MS star counts follow an exponential decline with a scale length of 1.15 kpc, essentially the same scale length as gleaned for the inner LMC disk from prior studies. While we cannot rule out tidal structure elsewhere, detection of ordered structure to 12 disk scale lengths is unprecedented, and adds to the puzzle of the LMC's interaction history. We present the first-ever global, spatially-resolved reconstruction of the star formation history (SFH) of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), based on the application of our StarFISH analysis software to the multiband photometry of twenty million of its stars from the Magellanic Clouds Photometric Survey. The general outlines of our results are consistent with previously published results: following an initial burst of star formation, there was a quiescent epoch from approximately 12 to 5 Gyr ago. Star formation then resumed and has proceeded until the current time at an average rate of roughly 0.2 solar masses/yr, with temporal variations at the factor-of-two level. The re-ignition of star formation about 5 Gyr ago, in both the LMC and SMC, is suggestive of a dramatic event at that time in the Magellanic system. Among the global variations in the recent star formation rate are peaks at roughly 2 Gyr, 500 Myr, 100 Myr and 12 Myr. The peaks at 500 Myr and 2 Gyr are nearly coincident with similar peaks in the SFH of the Small Magellanic Cloud, suggesting a joint history for these galaxies extending back at least several Gyr. The chemical enrichment history recovered from our StarFISH analysis is in broad agreement with that inferred from the LMC's star cluster population, although our constraints on the ancient chemical enrichment history are weak. We conclude from the concordance between the star formation and chemical enrichment histories of the field and cluster populations that the field and cluster star formation modes are tightly coupled., Comment: 20 pages, with color figures. The ACS Nearby Galaxy Survey Treasury (ANGST) is a large Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) treasury program to obtain resolved stellar photometry for a volume-limited sample of galaxies out to 4 Mpc. As part of this program, we have obtained deep ACS imaging of a field in the outer disk of the large spiral galaxy M81. The field contains the outskirts of a spiral arm as well as an area containing no current star formation. Our imaging results in a color-magnitude diagram (CMD) reaching to F814W = 28.8 and F606W = 29.5, one magnitude fainter than the red clump. Through detailed modeling of the full CMD, we quantify the age and metallicity distribution of the stellar populations contained in the field. The mean metallicity in the field is -1~100 Myr. We discuss the measured evolution of the M81 disk in the context of surveys of high-redshift disk galaxies and deep stellar photometry of other nearby galaxies. We present ~1000 new candidate Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud selected from Spitzer Space Telescope data, as part of the Surveying the Agents of a Galaxy's Evolution (SAGE) Legacy program. The YSOs, detected by their excess infrared (IR) emission, represent early stages of evolution, still surrounded by disks and/or infalling envelopes. Previously, fewer than 20 such YSOs were known. The candidate YSOs were selected from the SAGE Point Source Catalog from regions of color-magnitude space least confused with other IR-bright populations. The YSOs are biased toward intermediate- to high-mass and young evolutionary stages, because these overlap less with galaxies and evolved stars in color-magnitude space. The YSOs are highly correlated spatially with atomic and molecular gas, and are preferentially located in the shells and bubbles created by massive stars inside. They are more clustered than generic point sources, as expected if star formation occurs in filamentary clouds or shells. We applied a more stringent color-magnitude selection to produce a subset of "high-probability" YSO candidates. We fitted the spectral-energy distributions (SEDs) of this subset and derived physical properties for those that were well fitted. The total mass of these well-fitted YSOs is ~2900 M_☉ and the total luminosity is ~2.1 × 10^6 L_☉ . By extrapolating the mass function with a standard initial mass function and integrating, we calculate a current star-formation rate of ~0.06 M_☉ yr^(–1), which is at the low end of estimates based on total ultraviolet and IR flux from the galaxy (~0.05 – 0.25 M_☉ yr^(–1)), consistent with the expectation that our current YSO list is incomplete. Follow-up spectroscopy and further data mining will better separate the different IR-bright populations and likely increase the estimated number of YSOs. The full YSO list is available as electronic tables, and the SEDs are available as an electronic figure for further use by the scientific community.

We present a spectroscopic survey of 2046 red giant stars, distributed over the central 4x2 kpc of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). After fitting and removing a small velocity gradient across the SMC (7.9 km/s/deg oriented at 10 deg E of N), we measure an rms velocity scatter of 27.5+-0.5 km/s. The line of sight velocity distribution is well-characterized by a Gaussian and the velocity dispersion profile is nearly constant as a function of radius. We find no kinematic evidence of tidal disturbances. Without a high-precision measurement of the SMC's proper motion, it is not possible to constrain the SMC's true rotation speed from our measured radial-velocity gradient. However, even with conservative assumptions, we find that v < sigma and hence that the SMC is primarily supported by its velocity dispersion. We find that the shape of the SMC, as measured from the analysis of the spatial distribution of its red giant stars, is consistent with the degree of rotational flattening expected for the range of allowed v/sigma values. As such, the properties of the SMC are consistent with similar low luminosity spheroidal systems. We conclude that the SMC is primarily a low luminosity spheroid whose irregular visual appearance is dominated by recent star formation. A simple virial analysis using the measured kinematics implies an enclosed mass within 1.6 kpc of between 1.4 and 1.9x10^9 Mo, and a less well constrained mass within 3 kpc of between 2.7 and 5.1x10^9 Mo.

We have imaged the recently discovered stellar overdensity located approximately one core radius from the center of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy using the Magellan Clay 6.5m telescope with the Magellan Instant Camera (MagIC). Superb seeing conditions allowed us to probe the stellar populations of this overdensity and of a control field within Fornax to a limiting magnitude of R=26. The color-magnitude diagram of the overdensity field is virtually identical to that of the control field with the exception of the presence of a population arising from a very short (less than 300 Myr in duration) burst of star formation 1.4 Gyr ago. Coleman et al. have argued that this overdensity might be related to a shell structure in Fornax that was created when Fornax captured a smaller galaxy. Our results are consistent with this model, but we argue that the metallicity of this young component favors a scenario in which the gas was part of Fornax itself., Comment: 24 pages including 8 figures and 3 tables. We present our catalog of U, B, V, and I stellar photometry of the central 64 sq. deg. area of the Large Magellanic Cloud. Internal and external astrometric and photometric tests using existing optical photometry (U, B, and V from Massey's bright star catalog and I from the near-infrared sky survey DENIS) are used to confirm our observational uncertainty estimates. We fit stellar atmosphere models to the optical data to check the consistency of the photometry for individual stars across the passbands and to estimate the line-of-sight extinction. Finally, we use the estimated line-of-sight extinctions to produce an extinction map across the Large Magellanic Cloud, confirm the variation of extinction as a function of stellar population, and produce a simple geometrical model for the extinction as a function of stellar population., Comment: 7 pages (emulateapj), accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal

We present the spatially-resolved star formation and chemical enrichment history of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) across the entire central $4-degree x 4.5-degree area of the main body, based on UBVI photometry from our Magellanic Clouds Photometric Survey. We find that 1) approximately 50% of the stars that ever formed in the SMC formed prior to 8.4 Gyr ago (z >1.2 for WMAP cosmology), 2) the SMC formed relatively few stars between 8.4 and 3 Gyr ago, 3) there was a rise in the mean star formation rate during the most recent 3 Gyr punctuated by "bursts" at ages of 2.5, 0.4, and 0.06 Gyr, 4) the bursts at 2.5 and 0.4 Gyr are temporally coincident with past perigalactic passages of the SMC with the Milky Way, 5) there is preliminary evidence for a large-scale annular structure in the 2.5 Gyr burst, and 6) the chemical enrichment history derived from our analysis is in agreement with the age-metallicity relation of the SMC's star clusters. Consistent interpretation of the data required an ad hoc correction of 0.1-0.2 mag to the B-V colors of 25% of the stars; the cause of this anomaly is unknown, but we show that it does not strongly influence our results., 35 pages, 12 Figures; accepted for publication in AJ. The suggestion by Zaritsky & Lin that a vertical extension of the red clump feature in color-magnitude diagrams of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is consistent with a significant population of foreground stars to the LMC that could account for the observed microlensing optical depth has been challenged by various investigators. We respond by (1) examining each of the challenges presented and (2) presenting new photometric and spectroscopic data. We conclude that although the CMD data do not mandate the existence of a foreground population, they are entirely consistent with a foreground population associated with the LMC that contributes significantly (~ 50%) to the observed microlensing optical depth. Dissolving stellar groups are very difficult to detect using traditional surface photometry techniques. We have developed a method to find and characterize non-compact stellar systems in galaxies where the young stellar population can be spatially resolved. By carrying out photometry on individual stars, we are able to separate the luminous blue stellar population from the star field background. The locations of these stars are used to identify groups by applying the HOP algorithm, which are then characterized using color-magnitude and stellar density radial profiles to estimate age, size, density, and shape. We test the method on Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys archival images of IC 2574 and find 75 dispersed stellar groups. Of these, 20 highly dispersed groups are good candidates for dissolving systems. We find few compact systems with evidence of dissolution, potentially indicating that star formation in this galaxy occurs mostly in unbound clusters or groups. These systems indicate that the dispersion rate of groups and clusters in IC 2574 is at most 0.45 pc Myr{sup -1}. The location of the groups found with HOP correlate well with H I contour map features. However, they do not coincide with H I holes, suggesting that those holesmore » were not created by star-forming regions.« less
