Abstract: ODAY' S obstetric nurse has a newly defined role as a result of the gradual but marked change in obstetrical philosophy that has occurred during the past few years. Women, and the doctors and nurses who give them obstetric care, have been affected by this change and have found it beneficial in all its aspects. As more and more mothers approach childbirth with less fear, the new philosophy continues to spread, limited in its scope and degree only by the resistance to change found in all human beings and by certain prejudices to the term "natural childbirth." To understand this new role of the nurse fully we need to consider the development of the art and science of obstetric nursing not only in recent times, but also in the remote past.
