Abstract

The lithium anion of 2-(1-E-propenyl)-1,3-dithiane adds to 2-methyl cyclopent-2-en-1-one and produces, after alkylation, a useful steroid and vitamin D intermediate. The synthesis of de-AB-8-carbomethoxycholestan-9-one is detailed.
