Abstract

Plakoside C (3a) and D (4a), two further glycosphingolipids with a prenylated galactose and cyclopropane-containing alkyl chains, have been isolated from the Caribbean sponge Ectyoplasia ferox. Structures 3a and 4a have been determined on the basis of spectral data and micro-scale chemical degradation.

Abstract

Large amounts of bacteriohopanoids have been isolated from the marine sponge Plakortis simplex . In addition to the common bacteriohopanetetrol, the new 12-methylbacteriohopanetetrol, with an unprecedented methylation at C-12, was isolated and characterized by an extensive NMR analysis. While bacteriohopanetetrol is most likely of dietary origin, the unusual methylation at C-12 could be carried out by the sponge.

Abstract

The GSL composition of the marine sponge Agelas dispar was investigated. In addition to four GSLs previously isolated from Agelas clathrodes (2 and 4), Agelas conifera (3), and Agelas longissima (5), the novel triglycosylceramide 1a was isolated as a major component of the GSL mixture. All the isolated GSLs were tested using the MLR assay, and only some of them were shown to be immunoactivating agents, suggesting a possible structure-activity relationship.
