- Abstract
The shortage of reliable primary taxonomic data limits the description of biological taxa and the understanding of biodiversity patterns and processes, complicating biogeographical, ecological, and evolutionary studies. This deficit creates a significant taxonomic impediment to biodiversity research and conservation planning. The taxonomic impediment and the biodiversity crisis are widely recognized, highlighting the urgent need for reliable taxonomic data. Over the past decade, numerous countries worldwide have devoted considerable effort to Target 1 of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC), which called for the preparation of a working list of all known plant species by 2010 and an online world Flora by 2020. Brazil is a megadiverse country, home to more of the world's known plant species than any other country. Despite that, Flora Brasiliensis, concluded in 1906, was the last comprehensive treatment of the Brazilian flora. The lack of accurate estimates of the number of species of algae, fungi, and plants occurring in Brazil contributes to the prevailing taxonomic impediment and delays progress towards the GSPC targets. Over the past 12 years, a legion of taxonomists motivated to meet Target 1 of the GSPC, worked together to gather and integrate knowledge on the algal, plant, and fungal diversity of Brazil. Overall, a team of about 980 taxonomists joined efforts in a highly collaborative project that used cybertaxonomy to prepare an updated Flora of Brazil, showing the power of scientific collaboration to reach ambitious goals. This paper presents an overview of the Brazilian Flora 2020 and provides taxonomic and spatial updates on the algae, fungi, and plants found in one of the world's most biodiverse countries. We further identify collection gaps and summarize future goals that extend beyond 2020. Our results show that Brazil is home to 46,975 native species of algae, fungi, and plants, of which 19,669 are endemic to the country. The data compiled to date suggests that the Atlantic Rainforest might be the most diverse Brazilian domain for all plant groups except gymnosperms, which are most diverse in the Amazon. However, scientific knowledge of Brazilian diversity is still unequally distributed, with the Atlantic Rainforest and the Cerrado being the most intensively sampled and studied biomes in the country. In times of “scientific reductionism”, with botanical and mycological sciences suffering pervasive depreciation in recent decades, the first online Flora of Brazil 2020 significantly enhanced the quality and quantity of taxonomic data available for algae, fungi, and plants from Brazil. This project also made all the information freely available online, providing a firm foundation for future research and for the management, conservation, and sustainable use of the Brazilian funga and flora.

- Abstract
Adiantumis among the most distinctive and easily recognized leptosporangiate fern genera. Despite encompassing an astonishing range of leaf complexity, all species of Adiantumshare a unique character state not observed in other ferns: sporangia borne directly on the reflexed leaf margin or “false indusium” (pseudoindusium). The over 200 species of Adiantumspan six continents and are nearly all terrestrial. Here, we present one of the most comprehensive phylogenies for any large (200+ spp.) monophyletic, subcosmopolitan genus of ferns to date. We build upon previous datasets, providing new data from four plastid markers (rbcL, atpA, rpoA, chlN)for 146 taxa. All sampled taxa can be unequivocally assigned to one of nine robustly supported clades. Although some of these unite to form larger, wellsupported lineages, the backbone of our phylogeny has several short branches and generally weak support, making it difficult to accurately assess deep relationships. Our maximum likelihoodbased ancestral character state reconstructions of leaf blade architecture reveal remarkable convergent evolution across multiple clades for nearly all leaf forms. A single unique synapomorphy—leaves oncepinnate, usually with prolonged rooting tips—defines the philippense clade. Although a rare occurrence in Adiantum, simple leaves occur in three distinct clades (davidii, philippense, peruvianum). Most taxa have leaves that are more than oncepinnate, and only a few of these (in the formosum and pedatum clades) exhibit the distinct pseudopedate form. Distributional ranges for each of the terminal taxa show that most species (75%) are restricted to only one of six major biogeographical regions. Fortyeight of our sampled species (nearly onethird) are endemic to South America.

- Abstract
With more than 200 species, the maidenhair fern genus Adiantum is among the top ten most diverse fern genera. Adiantum is pantropical in distribution and, due to the presence of a unique synapomorphy (sporangia borne on indusia rather than laminae), perhaps the most easily recognized fern genus. Many of its members, including numerous cultivars derived from A. raddianum, are grown as ornamentals. Because of its size, a comprehensive taxonomic study of Adiantum is difficult and the genus is perhaps better approached through a series of narrower studies. Here, we focus specifically on A. raddianum and putative allies. We find a newly defined A. raddianum group to be strongly supported as monophyletic and segregated from other maidenhair ferns on the basis of genetic as well as morphological characteristics. Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood analyses of plastid atpA, chlL, chlN, rbcL, and rpoA sequences support the A. raddianum clade as sister to A. poiretii and its allies. We identify round-reniform indusia to be a characteristic of the A. raddianum group (vs. lunate in the A. poiretii group). Additionally, we find species in the A. poiretii group to differ in having a unique 66 nucleotide deletion in our chlN gene alignment. The neotropical A. raddianum group comprises at least 17 species (14 studied here), some widely distributed; one was recently described (A. alan-smithii).

- Abstract
Authorities have disagreed on the correct name for the widespread and common species known variously as Dryopteris paleacea(Swartz or Don) Hand.‐Mazz. or C. Chr. and D. wallichiana(Spreng.) Hyl. Reëxamination of Don's Prodromus Florae Nepalensisforces the conclusion that Alston was correct in using the latter name.

32. Serpocaulon(Polypodiaceae), a new genus segregated from Polypodium

- Abstract
We describe the neotropical fern genus Serpocaulon(Polypodiaceae), segregated from Polypodium, and make new combinations for the forty known species. Serpocaulonhas been recognized previously as a putatively natural group by several authors, based on morphological evidence, but never accorded generic rank. The monophyly of Serpocaulonis strongly supported in chloroplast DNA-based phylogenetic analyses, using the genes rbcL, rps4, rps4-trnSintergenic spacer, and trnL-Fintergenic spacer on 29 samples from 22 species. Serpocaulonis readily separated from other subclades within Polypodiaceae, and especially from Polypodium, which is less closely related to Serpocaulonthan are several other genera. Serpocaulondiffers from other New World polypods in the combination of usually long-creeping, sparingly branched rhizomes with clathrate (sometimes strongly so), usually peltately attached scales; regularly anastomosing (goniophlebioid) veins with individual areoles chevron-shaped and each with a single, free, included excurrent veinlet; and non-paraphysate sori in one to 10 rows between costae and pinna margins. In Polypodium, the rhizome scales are not clathrate, ± concolorous, and invaginated at the base, with somewhat overlapping basal lobes, and rhizomes are generally shorter-creeping and more frequently branched, the veins are free or forming a single row of areoles, and the sori uniseriate on each side of the costae. Most species of true Polypodiumare north-temperate, Mexican, or Mesoamerican in distribution, while Serpocaulonis entirely neotropical or subtropical, with the greatest number of species in South America. There appears to be no convenient infrageneric division of the species within Serpocaulon, although the most widespread species, S. triseriale, is somewhat isolated at the base of the clade. Species with the thinnest rhizomes also have the fewest scales, and generally grow at high elevations. Species having the scaliest rhizomes, with scales spreading and strongly overlapping, form a weakly supported subclade, as do species with multiseriate rows of areoles between costae and pinna margins.
