The Hungarian lichenologist Odon Szatala described 169 species and infraspecific taxa, with a majority of these being based on his own collections. He also described taxa from material sent to him for identification. In this study, original material for 27 names (Aspicilia latiloba, A. microspora var. astroidea, A. microspora var. insensibilis, A. subpercaena, Bacidia rhodi, Buellia samothrakiana, Catillaria lenticularis var. transsilvatica, C. servitii, C. zsakii, Dermatocarpon fuscatum, Diplotomma alboatrum var. virescens, Lecania nylanderiana var. ochracea, Lecanora atra var. aegaeica, L. cengiae-samboae, L. rhodi, Lecidea aegaeica, L. aegaeica f. acrustacea, L. aegaeica f. albida, L. aegaeica var. verruculosa, L. euphorea f. decussata, L. iranica, L. stigmatea f. armeniaca, Pertusaria baskalensis, Physcia grisea var. elbursiana, Placodiella olivacea var. stampaliana, Porina rechingeri and Verrucaria filarszkyana) of taxa described by Szatala and based on material collected by others from Greece, Hungary, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Palestine, Romania, Turkey and Ukraine was examined, and lectotypes were chosen. The species epithet hagenii has been consistently applied to a common and widespread lichenized fungus in Fennoscandia, Central Europe, and eastern North America usually under the name Lecanora hagenii (Ach.) Ach. (Lichenogr. Universalis: 367. 1810) since its introduction. However, Laundon (in Lichenol. 35: 98. 2003) correctly pointed out that Lichen hagenii was based on Lichen caerulescens K. G Hagen (Tent. Hist. Lieh.: 59. 1782), a later homonym of L. caerulescens Huds. (Fl. AngL, ed. 2,2: 531. 1778). According to the original account, Hagen's name is certainly based upon a totally different lichen: no original material has been traced, but we suspect from the published plate (tab. I fig. 5) that it is most probably a Pertusaria species in the P. hymenea group. In an interesting attempt to avoid a name change, Santesson & al. (Lieh. Lichenic. Fungi Fennoscand.: 152. 2004) indicated that the basionym of L. hagenii was "Parmelia hagenii Ach., 1803, non Lichen hagenii Ach., 1799 ("1798")." This was proposed because Acharius (Methodus: 162. 1803) inserted a "?" after Hagen's epithet "caerulescens" suggesting doubt that it was synonymous, and also included a short discussion emphasizing the uncer tainty and even suggesting it might represent the species now known as Ochrolechia tart?rea (L.) A. Massai. This interpretation is, however, questionable as no "?" was included by the citation of Hagen's illustration. Considering Acharius's epithet not to be based on material belonging to L. hagenii as currently understood, Laundon lectotypified the name L. umbrina (Ach.) A. Massai. (Rie. Auton. Lieh. Crost: 10. 1852; syn. L. hagenii [var.] umbrina Ach., Lichenogr. Universalis: 368. 1810) by geographically unlocalized material in BM-Ach 422 con forming to the current concept of L. hagenii, proposing that that name be used for L. hagenii in the modem sense. This is potentially extremely confusing as the name L. umbrina has been applied to diverse species in the L. dispersa com plex in the past. In the ongoing monographic studies of over 1900 collections of the complex in a wide range of herbaria throughout Europe and North America by Sliwa, the name L. umbrina has been found to have been applied to a range of different species, notably L. dispersa (Pers.) Sommerf. (dark apothecial morphotypes), L. persimilis (Th. Fr.) Nyl., and L. sambuci (Pers.) Nyl., as well as L. hagenii (as cur rently understood). To now take up the confused name L. umbrina for the well-circumscribed and well-established

The sterile saxicolous lichen known as Pertusaria dealbata (e.g. by Dibben, 1980: 54) is distinguished by its granular soredia which react C , K + yellowish becoming brownish, and PD + red in standard lichen colour tests. The positive reaction with paraphenylenediamine (PD) is due to the presence of fumarprotocetraric acid; see Hanko (1983: 175-180) for an account of the chemistry. This lichen has been called P dealbata (Achar.) Crombie (1870: 59) in the past but this is wrong because the type material of the basionym Lichen dealbatus Acharius (1799: 29), namely Herb. Acharius 1743B (H), unfortunately unavailable for loan, contains thamnolic acid and belongs to Pertusaria corallina (L.) F. Arnold (Vitikainen, in litt.), a well-known lichen. There is also an authentic specimen of Lichen dealbatus sent by Acharius in 1801 to J. E. Smith (Herb. Smith 1697.6, LINN!); it has both apothecia and isidia and is K + yellow becoming brownish-orange, indicating that it too belongs to Pertusaria corallina.
