AIM: Increase in aged population in number brings along the risk of falls and fall-related injuries among elderly. It has been reported that almost 60% of falls occur in nursing homes and majority of admissions to emergency departments due to falls consist of elderly. The purpose of this study conducted in a nursing home in Ankara was to determine the frequency of falls and risk factors, and to clear out the opinions and views of the participants on planning and promoting interventions for prevention. METHOD: This cross-sectional study was carried out among 60 years of age and older residents who lived in a nursing home. Data of the study was collected via face to face interviewing technique. The questionnaire consisted of four sections including socio-demographic characteristics, health status of the participants, healthy/risky behavior and fall related characteristics. RESULTS: Mean age of the 75 female and 59 male participants involved in the study was 73.99+/-7.18. Females were found to fall more in frequency than males (p>0.05). It was found that nearly half of the males (47.5%) and more than half of the females (56.0%) fell at least once within the previous year. Number of falls were higher among 75 years of age and older participants compared to the other age groups (p=0.003). Compared to the participants with fall background, aged people without fall background gave more correct answers in number to the questions which were asked to assess the knowledge on falls. Purpose: A content analysis of five newspapers with the highest circulation numbers in selected months on obesity including assessment of the news’ concordance status with recent scientific data and the manipulation status by the advertisement sector. Material and Methods: Newspapers were determined via “Press Announcement Institution” data in May 2012. Random selection of 4 months were completed to evaluate the newspapers within one year period before February 2012 which was the last accessible date of the National Library Archive. In conclusion, 151 published news in March, August, October 2011, February 2012 were evaluated. Results: Majority of the news were found in concordance with the recent scientific data (61,6%) and majority of them were not manipulated by the advertisement sector (86,1%). Statistically significantly difference were found between the concordance of the news with recent scientific data and news’ characteristics like main content, being published in a particular section, type of the news, being noted of the person(s) who had prepared the news, source of scientific data, etc. News were found as they were statistically significantly manipulated by the advertisement sector due to a number of characteristics as well. BACKGROUND: In this intervention study which competency based training approach was used, it was aimed to determine behaviors of 6-14 years of age children about hand hygiene and to change their hand-washing skills in the “positive” way after the training. METHODS: Ninety children participated in the study (participation rate= %88.2). A standard check-list was used for both training and evaluation of the behaviors. The data were processed and statistically analyzed with the SPSS for Windows 15.0 software. Mc Nemar and chi square tests were used for analysis of the data. RESULTS: Mean age of the children was found to be 9.76±2.02. Fifty six point seven percent of the participants were females and 43.3% of them were males.
