Abstract

In this work, organic capped CdSe and (CdSe)ZnS core shell colloidal nanocrystals (NCs), prepared by means of thermolysis of organometallic precursors and with high control on size and size dispersion, were dispersed into a transparent and thermoplastic cyclic olefin copolymer, namely TOPAS, by using toluene as common solvent. The obtained nanocomposite material was deposited by spin coating in thin films that were investigated by UV–vis spectroscopy as well as by TEM analysis. A preliminary comparison of the luminescence properties of CdSe core and (CdSe)ZnS core shell NCs in polymer was carried out. The effect of NC concentration, time and temperature on the optical properties of the composites was determined with the aim of a potential use of these materials for permanent photonic applications. The incorporation of luminescent (CdSe)ZnS NCs in the TOPAS copolymer can be potentially effective for the fabrication of novel optical devices by nanoimprint lithography.

Abstract

Electrodes based on Q-sized ZnO and TiO2, synthesised by non-hydrolytic routes, were prepared and characterised. The nanostructured electrodes were modified with photosynthetic pigments, namely, chlorophyll a, carotenoids and their mixture, to probe the photochemical sensitisation process. The photocurrent response of the hetero-junctions and the current–potential (I–V) characteristics of the sensitised electrodes are presented for different dyes. The Q-sized semiconductor sensitised electrodes showed different behaviour when compared to correspondent commercial oxides. Co-sensitisation acted by chlorophyll a and carotenoids on nanostructured electrodes was found to greatly enhance the photocurrent generation.

Abstract

Stable and highly luminescent CdS nanocrystals (NCs) have been synthesized by means of decomposition of suitable precursors (CdO and elemental sulphur) in octadecene (ODE) and oleic acid at high temperature. Absorption and steady state photoluminescence (PL) measurements have been carried out to study the intrinsic properties of nanocrystals and the effect of ligand and solvent on emission properties. Ageing of nanocrystals has been investigated, and an efficient mechanism of emission recovery has been identified, showing the active role of non coordinating solvent and oleic acid in modifying the surface states.

Abstract

Abstract: Spherical and rod shaped organic-capped TiO2 nanocrystals (NCs), prepared by a hydrolytic route, were deposited as thin films and characterized by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and surface plasmon resonance (SPR). SPR was assessed as transduction technique in order to test the sensing ability of the prepared films for detection of alcohol vapours as a function of NC shape and thermal treatment. The performances of the TiO2 nanocrystals were found to be dependent on the titania nanocrystal morphology and thermal treatment conditions, pointing to the beneficial effect of a rod-like shape as compared to a spherical one, and to a possible role of the titania surface organic coating in enhancing the sensor response.
