Due to technological advancements, all types of businesses confront new opportunities. In the contemporary era of technology, innovation performs a key role in successful commercial landscape operations. Therefore, this research was conducted to examine the effect of the innovation network (IN) on organizational innovativeness (OI). Moreover, the mediating effects of frugal innovation (FI) and the moderating role of organizational readiness (OR) have also been examined. Data collection through a cross-sectional method was conducted for this study from SMEs. Some 442 managers and owners provided correct responses, which were used for further analysis. SEM was used for testing the hypotheses of the current study. The results showed that the innovation network positively affects organizational innovativeness. Furthermore, the outcomes also validated that frugal innovation plays a mediating role between the innovation network and the organizational innovativeness link. The SMEs working in the circular economy are mainly dependent on their innovative activities/actions. In the current dynamic scenario, the survival of SMEs is linked to continuous organizational innovativeness in their products/services.

This paper examines how the institutional environment (from a multi-level approach) and the moderating role of innovation networks and rural location explain which mechanism (institutional fostering or escapism) underlies the phenomenon of accelerated internationalization of small and medium-sized enterprises. By analyzing a dataset of 2289 firms from Argentina, Colombia, and Peru, the results suggest that the access of strategic resources and capabilities may either reinforce an institutional fostering or institutional escapism effect. The findings show that institutional fostering is associated with formal institutional voids and rural location, while institutional escapism is associated with local informal institutions, corporate sustainability certifications, and innovation networks. The institutional escapism effect is higher for firms that have social or environmental certifications. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.

Communities of practice (CoPs) interact with a range of external stakeholders who collectively influence the direction of the community and the achievement of its goals. In the case of multi-actor co-innovation partnerships, which are perceived as a type of combination between a community of practice and innovation network in this paper, internal and external interactions consequently influence the ability of these partnerships to co-innovate. The aim of this contribution is to develop an analytical framework to understand the factors and processes that enable or hinder interactions, both within and external to multi-actor co-innovation partnerships. The analytical framework was built around interactions with funding mechanisms, external stakeholders, the context/environment, and societal challenges, along with interactions within the partnership. Each of these five interactions is influenced by structures and capacity, along with how these combine to overcome the challenges faced by the partnership. For this study, 30 case study multi-actor co-innovation partnerships from across Europe were selected and analysed according to the framework. The results show that interactions with funding bodies can lead to partnerships adapting to what they perceive to be the goals of the funding body, and sometimes to the overpromising of expected outputs in an effort to win scarce funding. The reflection of societal needs in the goals of funding bodies could thereby capitalize on the motivations and aspirations of partnerships to combine socio-economic and environmental benefits at both individual and societal levels. Factors that enable partnerships to achieve their own goals are commonly based around the inclusion or recruitment of experienced partners with existing networks, in which the partnership may be embedded, that can facilitate internal collaboration and navigate the external environments, such as political structures and market conditions.

This Special Issue of Sustainability devoted to the topic of “Big Data Research for Social Sciences and Social Impact” attracted significant attention of scholars, practitioners, and policy-makers from all over the world. Locating themselves at the cross-section of advanced information systems and computer science research and insights from social science and engineering, all papers included in this Special Issue contribute to the debate on the use of big data in social sciences and big data social impact. By promoting a debate on the multifaceted challenges that our societies are exposed to today, this Special Issue offers an in-depth, integrative, well-organized, comparative study into the most recent developments shaping the future directions of interdisciplinary research and policymaking.

There is anecdotal evidence of the effectiveness of Extension and Advisory Service (EAS) agencies for strengthening innovation networks to adapt to extreme events that impact agricultural production and productivity. In Bangladesh, the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) is responsible for ensuring sustainable rice farming, which is damaged by flash flooding every year. This study investigates how EAS can strengthen farmers’ innovation networks by examining DAE’s efforts to adapt rice cultivation to flash flooding. Using surveys and interviews from farmers affiliated with DAE (DAE-farmers) and farmers independent of DAE (non-DAE farmers), the effectiveness of innovation networks was examined. One of the key findings of this paper is that DAE’s efforts to strengthen the innovation networks of farmers to adapt rice cultivation to flash flooding focused on the facilitation of the agronomic network development. The organization missed the opportunity to enable the harvesting networks’ efficacy. As the harvesting activities are highly exposed to flash flooding, the absence of adequate support from the DAE and timely updates of local weather and flash flooding information indicates that farmers are still at significant risk. This study also shows the value of including both formal (e.g., EAS agencies, research organizations) and informal actors (e.g., relatives, local input dealers) in the innovation network as a way of ensuring diversity of information access.

The European Union (EU) Framework Programmes represent the ideal platform for exchanging knowledge potentially leading to innovation outcomes, in addition to providing vital research funds for various types of organisations (firms, universities, agencies, etc.) The present paper aims to assess whether innovativeness (&lsquo, innovation-driven&rsquo, participation) or energy demand/vulnerability (&lsquo, challenge-driven&rsquo, participation) determine a different degree of participation in the context of the energy programme funded under Horizon 2020 (2014&ndash, 2020 period). By combining social network analysis and econometrics, our empirical analysis clearly shows that the more innovative EU regions hold a central or key position, while the regions characterised by higher energy demand or vulnerability play a marginal role in the EU energy network. These findings are not dissimilar to what other scholars have observed in relation to different EU programmes and funding schemes. Based on this, we argue that EU policymakers and evaluators should aim at encouraging challenge-driven participation and, more generally, a more balanced participation through appropriate and specific policy actions.

The overall high-end of strategic emerging industries can be effectively promoted by strengthening the inter-industry innovation linkage effect. This paper constructs a strategic emerging industry innovation network based on industry correlation. This paper studies the development trend of the whole network structure and individual network characteristics and analyzes the influence of network structure characteristics on the attribute performance of each industry. The research results are as follows: (i) The innovation network as a whole was in a slight decline trend of low density during the sample investigation period, and the correlation level had great room for improvement. (ii) The high-end equipment manufacturing industry, the new materials industry, and the new-generation information technology industry occupy the center of the network, but their spillover effect on other industries is poor, and some industries even get more innovation benefits. (iii) The innovation network of China’s strategic emerging industries has the characteristics of cross-industry clustering, and the linkage effect between plates is insufficient, showing the characteristics of the “reflexivity” aggregation subgroup. (iv) The unreasonable connection mode of strategic emerging industries’ innovation network leads to the improvement of the centrality degree, which is not conducive to the innovation output of the industry. However, innovation output can be positively affected, to a certain extent, by improving the betweenness and closeness of the industries in the network.

As research on smart cities garners increased attention and its status consolidates as one of the fanciest areas of research today, this paper makes a case for a cautious rethink of the very rationale and relevance of the debate. To this end, this paper looks at the smart cities debate from the perspectives of, on one hand, citizens&rsquo, awareness of applications and solutions that are considered &lsquo, smart&rsquo, and, on the other hand, their ability to use these applications and solutions. Drawing from a detailed analysis of the outcomes of a pilot international study, this paper showcases that even the most educated users of smart city services, i.e., those arguably most aware of and equipped with skills to use these services effectively, express very serious concerns regarding the utility, safety, accessibility and efficiency of those services. This suggests that more pragmatism needs to be included in smart cities research if its findings are to remain useful and relevant for all stakeholders involved. The discussion in this paper contributes to the smart cities debate in three ways. First, it adds empirical support to the &lsquo, normative bias&rsquo, of smart cities research. Second, it suggests ways of bypassing it, thereby opening a debate on the preconditions of sustainable interdisciplinary smart city research. Third, it points to new avenues of research.
