The area of sharing economy business models (SEBMs) is expanding worldwide. To date, a few qualitative literature reviews concentrating on specific business models have been undertaken, while several have focused on the general concept of the sharing economy. Meanwhile, there is a lack of quantitative reviews in this area. Therefore, a retrospective review of the evolution of the SEBM area and prospective forecasts based on quantified data are urgently needed. In order to fill the gaps and critically evaluate the extant literature on the SEBM area and its scientometrics-related topics, this paper combines the Scopus and Web of Science databases to establish a dataset for a thorough bibliometric analysis. With 951 studies from 552 sources identified, this research provides comprehensive and nuanced information covering the most influential authors and their contributions to the subject, impactful articles with their citation details, ranked sources with their h_, g_ and m-index as well as collaboration maps for authors, affiliations and countries. Graphical representation of knowledge mapping depicts the evolution of publications over time and the emerging trends of current interests and potential directions for future research for sustainable development. This study revealed that Sustainability is the most relevant and second most impactful journal in SEBM research. More importantly, this research deployed keyword dynamic and thematic evolution to detect the current and future trending topics, providing seven future research directions: (1) drivers-, location- and competition-related topics; (2) SEBMs in emerging economies; (3) country-, region- and culture-oriented SEBMs; (4) the link between e-commerce and social media frameworks and SEBMs; (5) sustainability and SEBMs; (6) new technologies and SEBMs and (7) COVID-19 effects on SEBMs. Overall, the results of this study theoretically enrich the sharing economy business model literature and have substantial implications for policymakers and practitioners.

This research aims at establishing an integrated urban public transport system with a subway route supplemented by conventional bus lines, in order to enable residents’ “door-to-door” travel. This paper first analyzed the attraction area of the subway, and then used the GIS tools to calculate and analyze residents’ accessibility to adjacent bus stops. Moreover, it created a preliminary layout of bus stops for residential areas with extremely low accessibility using an improved potential model. From the perspective of minimizing residents’ travel costs and bus stop infrastructure deployment costs, a bus stop site selection optimization model was developed. According to the characteristics of the model, the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) was employed to solve the optimal bus stop locations. In addition, the entropy weight technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) evaluation model was used to evaluate and sort candidate schemes, accordingly, and thus the optimal site selection scheme was identified. Finally, a before-after comparative analysis on residents’ travel accessibility was conducted. Results show that the proposed method can effectively improve residents’ accessibility to bus stops, which facilitates residents to transfer from conventional bus to subway. Furthermore, it provides a basis for the follow-up optimization of the connection between subway and conventional bus lines.

When the World Health Organization (WHO) analyzed the culprits of global warming, it was found that in developed countries with relatively few high-polluting heavy industries, the medical sector is one of the sources of high-density carbon emissions. Therefore, the medical industry has a noticeable impact on the environment. Amid the current COVID-19 epidemic, this study adopts the theory of planned behavior (TPB), widely used in decision-making science. We selected a regional teaching hospital with 339 employees in Taiwan to obtain valid questionnaire data. We explore the comparative analysis of different intra-organizational stakeholders’ “attitudes,” “subjective norms,” and “perceived behavioral control” on the hospital’s behavioral intention to promote green healthcare. The results show that the TPB model has reliable explanatory power. All three factors have a positive and significant effect on promoting green hospital behavior. Among them, perceived behavioral control was the most notable. A comparative analysis of the differences among stakeholders in the research model shows that “medical administrators” and “nursing staff” have a higher proportion of significant influence effects in various hypotheses, highlighting the critical roles of these two groups in promoting green hospitals. This research policy suggests that the cross-departmental staff in the hospital put forward green innovation ideas, strengthen internal environmental education and management, establish a good incentive system for front-line nursing staff, and implement the sustainable development strategy of the hospital.

This paper presents an empirical study on key competencies for sustainable development.Over a period of two years, we collected empirical data on competencies of senior sustainabilityprofessionals by using an action research approach. Data collection took place in Belgium Flanders viaan elaborate iterative action-reflection process including an interactive workshop, interviews, and anonline survey. Our analysis provides strong empirical evidence for the existence of two complementarycompetency clusters, namely sustainability research competencies and sustainability interventioncompetencies. Together they enable the profound analysis and understanding of sustainability issuesand ensure the ability to devise solutions and foster change towards sustainability. Furthermore, weshed a first light on the interaction of these competency clusters and their link with the practitioners’topical knowledge and lived experience. This study bridges the divergence in literature betweentheoretically and empirically driven research and offers novel insights on sustainability competenciesfor the fields of sustainability science, human resource management, and higher education.

Balancing sustainable economic growth and environmental protection in developing countries is an important way to mitigate climate change. Based on panel data from nine provinces along the Silk Road Economic Belt between 2004 and 2021, this paper takes Chongqing, a pilot city for carbon trading rights, as the experimental group and the remaining eight provinces as the control group; we mainly analyze the impact of the carbon emissions trading policy on Chongqing’s carbon emissions and economic development after its implementation in 2013 using the difference-in-differences method (DID) and propensity score matching difference-in-differences method (PSM-DID). Then we use the synthetic control method (SCM) to test its robustness. The results showed that while maintaining the economic development speed, carbon trading helps to reduce carbon emissions. In addition, we also found that the economic activity effect and the energy intensity effect are the mediating effects of the carbon emissions reduction. Finally, taking the policy effect of the carbon emissions trading in Chongqing as a reference, this article confirmed the importance of aligning the carbon trading pathway with targeted green policies from the government. The government should drive the establishment of a regional carbon market in the nine provinces along the Silk Road Economic Belt, which could help to achieve sustainable development.

This study aims to provide a comprehensive framework for understanding citizens’ intentions to engage in environmentally sustainable behavior, thus making cities more sustainable. This article investigates environmentally sustainable behavior by adopting the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA). Using Partial Least Square Path Modeling (PLS-PM), an analysis of survey data from 224 respondents in Italy revealed the salient role of attitudes, subjective norms, intentions, and urban sustainable policies in urban sustainable behavior. Our findings have important implications for theory and practice in this new area of inquiry.

One of the basic challenges of contemporary transportation policy is to reduce the share of passenger cars used as the primary means of transportation. This problem is particularly important in urban areas, where congestion generates significant economic costs and carries certain risks for the environment and air quality, and, as a result, has a negative impact on the health of residents. In recent decades, many solutions have been developed to support the reduction of car traffic, many of which are part of the concept of sustainable and shared mobility, such as public transport systems and carsharing and bike-sharing systems. The authors have focused on an in-depth analysis of the carsharing phenomenon in both theoretical and practical terms. The aim of the following considerations is to fill the gap in knowledge about the directions of global trends in the development of carsharing and to relate them to the situation in Poland. In addition, the authors carried out an analysis aimed at characterising the degree of activity of using carsharing services at the border of the zone and indicating whether there may be a connection between the location of cars in the border zone and the possibility of transferring to other means of transport. The authors also point out whether increasing the area of carsharing, in this case, seems justified. The research was conducted based on the literature, an analysis of the activities of companies providing carsharing services, an analysis of open public data in this area, and observations.

Situated within the context of ‘Transforming our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development’ and the associated 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this article explores some current understandings about corporate social responsibility (CSR) and related ethical and sustainable business policies and practices within UK-based global businesses. It also considers the potential lessons for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) based on the approaches of global companies. The research engaged senior CSR managers from UK global brand businesses to discuss their CSR perceptions and practices. To the surprise of researchers, the participants described how they were moving past ‘CSR’ to instead use the SDGs as their framework. The findings suggest that global companies are reframing CSR within the broader concept of sustainability, influenced by the SDGs, and are willing to offer advice to SMEs as part of a broader supply chain collaboration process. While there is emerging literature focusing on the practical implications of the SDGs for global business, there appears to have been less attention to the potential for knowledge sharing between global companies and SMEs linked to the SDGs. Our research asked participants about recommendations for SMEs and these are also discussed in this paper. Our intention is to make a particular contribution to the latter area of inquiry and demonstrate the relevance of the SDGs to business, regardless of size.

This paper examines the existence of the need and willingness of media companies in Serbia to organize professional training for their employees, with the aim of improving their knowledge and skills and for the sake of their career growth, analyzed in the context of business sustainability, as well as the sustainability of human resources in a very competitive media industry. The main purpose of the paper is to determine the relationship between professional training for media professionals and their career growth. It looks into the subjective assessment of the need for training, the subjective assessment of the usefulness of training, and organizational support related to training and development in order for media professionals to achieve career growth. A correlation study was conducted on a sample of 150 media professionals using three scales of a job training and job satisfaction survey questionnaire to determine the subjective assessment of the need for professional training, the subjective assessment of the usefulness of professional training and organizational support to training, while a modified organizational career growth scales questionnaire was used to determine career growth. Research results confirmed that employees believe that additional training has an impact on the development of their career, as well as that attending additional training has a positive effect on their career growth. This paper provides useful guidelines for company management regarding professional training and its implications on career growth, theoretical and practical implications, as well as suggestions for future research.

The development of industrialization has overwhelmed an ecological environment damaged by the modern agricultural method. The development of a circular economy, which focuses on green development while balancing the development of agricultural production capacity, has led to the emergence of ecoagriculture. This study examines the impact of the green development concept on farmers’ income, using the practice of the green development concept of ecoagriculture in Guangdong province, China, as an example. The study uses the entropy method to verify whether the green development concept advocated by top-down policies genuinely benefits farmers’ living standards. The study results are as follows. First, the green development concept’s application in Guangdong province’s agricultural production and the two-way granger causality relationship between farmer income and food production interact. Second, chemical fertilizers and pesticides have played an important role in promoting the development of agricultural production. Third, in the long run, the greater the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides will reduce farmers’ incomes. In summary, from the perspective of sustainable development, green development will promote increased income for China’s farmers and improve rural development. It is essential to implement the concept of green development in the process of rural modernization.

This paper explores the ways in which a participatory curriculum planning model could help to address the embedding of an education on sustainability into higher education institutions; this is enabled by ICTs and is in particular reference to Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam. Transforming university curricula in order to address sustainability has been tackled effectively through the development of a participatory curriculum planning model that was applied in seven higher education institutions. The interventions carried out by the ICTeEfS initiative have contributed significantly to producing a corpus of university teaching staff in each partner university which, in turn, has initiated curriculum revisions to address sustainability, mostly in teacher education.

The development and application of emerging technologies pose many social risks, which raise public concerns. Various factors influence the public risk perception of emerging technologies, and a systematic and accurate understanding of these factors plays a vital role in promoting the sustainable development of emerging technologies. Considerable inconsistency and ambiguity exist in the influence of relevant factors on the public risk perception of emerging technologies in existing studies, which need to be explored systematically and comprehensively through meta-analysis. This study constructs an analytical framework of “technology–psychology–society” and conducts a meta-analysis of 272 papers, including 449 correlations and 191,195 samples. The results show that perceived benefit, knowledge, innovativeness, trust, and social influence have significant negative effects on risk perception. Perceived cost has a significant positive effect on risk perception. Gender and cultural dimensions of power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism–collectivism, and masculinity–femininity have moderating effects on the relationship between relevant factors and risk perception; the type of emerging technology, age, and the cultural dimension of long-term/short-term orientation do not have moderating effects. Based on the above findings, this study proposes corresponding suggestions from the perspectives of R&D, application, and management of emerging technologies.

The demand for food has been increasing throughout the years, with notable preferences for animal-based foods. Considering the impact of the excessive animal-based consumption on the environment and public health, international organisations and the scientific literature have advised for a large-scale transition towards healthier and more sustainable food consumptions, i.e., a systematic decrease in animal-based consumption followed by an increase in plant-based consumption. However, to effectively promote healthier and more sustainable food choices such as plant-based ones, it is crucial to understand what motivates consumers’ food choices. Based on primary data (N = 1040), representative of the Portuguese population, it was possible to assess the potential motivators behind food choices, allowing to provide guidelines for policy decision. The impact of different socioeconomic characteristics, food consumption orientations, and food-related behaviours on food choices was estimated. In general, most of the drivers of plant-based meals were also motivators for reducing animal-based meals. The main findings demonstrate that the more environmentally conscious and informed the consumer, the more likely they are to choose more plant-based and less animal-based meals on a weekly basis; not only informed consumers, but consumers who actively look for information before buying choose more plant-based meals. Thus, not only information, but, more importantly, education regarding food characteristics and its impact on society should be the focus of policymakers. Understanding the drivers and barriers of food choices is vital for informing future food policy to promote healthier and more sustainable choices rich in plant-based foods, both for Portugal as well as for other European countries, particularly the southern ones with similar culture and where the Mediterranean diet is highly promoted.

This study conducts in-depth research on geographic information visualization and the sustainable development of low-carbon rural slow tourism under artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze and discuss the visualization of geographic information and the sustainable development of low-carbon slow tourism in rural areas. First, the development options related to low-carbon tourism in rural areas are discussed. Then, a low-carbon rural slow tourism recommendation method based on AI and a low-carbon rural tourism scene recognition method based on Cross-Media Retrieval (CMR) data are proposed. Finally, the proposed scheme is tested. The test results show that the carbon dioxide emissions of one-day tourism projects account for less than 10% of the total tourism industry. From the proportion, it is found that air transport accounts for the largest proportion, more than 40%. With the development of time, the number of rural slow tourists in Guizhou has increased the most, while the number of rural slow tourists in Yunnan has increased to a lesser extent. In the K-means clustering model, the accuracy of scenario classification based on the semantic features of scene attributes is 5.26% higher than that of attribute likelihood vectors. On the Support Vector Machine classifier, the scene classification accuracy based on the semantic features of scene attributes is 19.2% higher than that of the scene classification based on attribute likelihood vector features. CMR techniques have also played a satisfying role in identifying rural tourism scenarios. They enable passengers to quickly identify tourist attractions to save preparation time and provide more flexible time for the tour process. The research results have made certain contributions to the sustainable development of low-carbon rural slow tourism.

As a substantially capital-intensive venture, the distribution network of the geothermal business is disproportionately clustered around the project designing phase. The profound geothermal industry is broad, and consequently the geothermal economy differs substantially from one place to another. The primary goal of this study is to analyze the effect of factors relating to global competitiveness along with economic growth on the sustainability of geothermal energy among European 27 countries. Employing auto regressive distributing lag (ARDL), the major findings suggest that a significant rise in the geothermal power production sustainable development can occur in the 14 European Union emerged economies applying global competitiveness criteria than in EU13 developing economies. Among additional criteria, a conducive environment, intellectual capital, market shares, as well as an innovation ecosystem contributes more significantly to the sustainability of geothermal energy among the 14 classed as established in this research than the 13 emerging economies. The results suggest that geothermal power sustainability among the European countries regions could attain a sustainable increased level of geothermal energy generation by putting in place the necessary global competitiveness determinants for the EU 2030 Energy Union goals to be achieved. The attainment of these Energy Union goals will assist in combating climate change and fighting environmental pollution. Three estimators were adopted to confirm that all calculated projections made in the study are said to be valid. The global competitiveness measures should be made better effective by the EU nations and this will help in achieving a pollution-free society and environment. Authorities in charge of policy and law-making in the EU regions should participate more in global competitiveness for geothermal energy production to become sustainable. Cointegrated strategies that will promote sustainability should be stressed by policymakers in the EU. This will go a long way in reducing the level of carbon dioxide emissions and also in promoting sustainability in the area of geothermal power generation.

As a topic of interest, the quality of Carbon Accounting Information Disclosure (CAID) provides necessary support to enhance sustainability and investment in Research and Development (R&D). Does improving the quality of CAID have an impact on the R&D investment? Does the sustainability of enterprises play a moderating role in the quality of CAID and R&D investment? These are questions that deserve attention and discussion. This paper extracted 1407 samples from China’s markets from 2019–2021, carried out descriptive statistical analysis, analyzed the impact of CAID on R&D investment using multiple linear regression, verified the moderating effect of sustainability on the role of both, and finally conducted a robustness test. The study showed that the higher the quality of CAID, the greater the R&D investment of listed companies; the stronger the sustainability, the stronger the promotion of CAID quality on R&D investment. The findings were also applicable in State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), while the effect is not significant in non-State-Owned Enterprises. This paper made several recommendations. First, to enhance the company’s R&D investment, listed companies should enhance their CAID capability. Second, listed companies should improve their sustainability to ensure the effective performance of CAID. Third, the government should strengthen supervision and policy guidance to promote the continuous improvement of the CAID system to guide listed companies on the road to developing a low-carbon economy.

The present study offers a window into college students’ views of environmental sustainability in a country that is one of the major oil producers in the world. College students are the main constituents of the country’s programmatic plan (i.e., the 2030 Vision) for restructuring its infrastructure and human capital away from oil and gas production and toward a knowledge and service economy. Thus, their views can influence the success of the plan. In the present study, 430 college students at a university located at the heart of the oil and gas region were surveyed via an online questionnaire. Participants were of Middle Eastern descent. It was found that their beliefs and reported actions were generally supportive of a green economy. However, their beliefs in climate change and specifically in renewable energy did not predict much of their sustainability-based behaviors (e.g., recycling). The latter findings were interpreted as reflecting the internal conflict between embracing change (i.e., a desirable but uncertain future), and resisting change (i.e., a choice that would preserve, at least for some time, the benefits of the fossil fuel economy).

The article presents the results of research on the impact of the transformation of Poland’s energy mix on the country’s energy security. Since energy security is a very complex problem, the impact of the transformation has been verified in three aspects, i.e., greenhouse gas emissions; energy availability in terms of its quantity, sufficient to meet the needs of citizens; and energy prices. The MANOVA model was used in the research. The model allowed us to examine the relationship between the share of coal in the energy mix and the above-mentioned factors. The MANOVA model allowed us to determine the influence of one explanatory variable on several response variables. The results obtained enabled the verification of the adequacy of the changes that have been made in the energy mix over the last 10 years. As is shown, the factor that is related to changes in the share of coal in the energy mix is the energy surplus, while a relationship between both prices and emission levels and the changes in the share of coal in the energy mix has not been established. Furthermore, a simulation was carried out, which showed that the correlation between price, emissions, and the share in the mix was obtained only by reducing 2017–2020 emissions by an average of 6% and prices by 17%.

As one of the most widespread and important types of terrestrial vegetation in the world, grasslands play an irreplaceable role in global climate change. The grasslands of Inner Mongolia, represented by the Xilin Gol League, are typical of Eurasian grasslands and have an important ecological status in the world. In this paper, taking the grassland of Xilin Gol League as the research object, based on the machine learning method, we mainly carry out two aspects of work: the prediction of grassland soil health and evaluation of grassland sustainable development. To address the issue of predicting soil health in grasslands, we focus on an important indicator in grasslands: soil moisture. By analyzing the characteristics of soil moisture time series values and related influencing factors, based on a NAR neural network model, three important factors of soil moisture were predicted: soil evaporation data, average air temperature, and precipitation. Subsequently, the corresponding soil moisture calculation model was trained using regression models based on hyperparameter optimization, and the final predicted soil moisture values were obtained for different months and depths in 2023 and 2024. To evaluate the sustainability of grassland development, we developed a model for the degree of grassland desertification based on the kernel principal component analysis, focusing on three dimensions: environmental factors, surface factors, and human factors. Based on this, a quantitative definition of soil denudation is given by analyzing the main influencing factors of grassland soil degradation. At the same time, a prediction model for the evaluation of soil slumping was established based on a fuzzy comprehensive evaluation matrix, and the evaluation weights of each major factor were given and analyzed. Based on the above research, this paper suggests a reasonable grazing strategy for the grassland areas of the Xilin Gol League: when the grazing intensity is medium and the total number of grazing days is [85, 104] days in a year, the degree of soil slumping and soil desertification in the pastures is minimized. The research results of this paper are useful for the future maintenance and management of the grasslands of Xilin Gol League and other similar areas.

This article discusses the importance of 28 different activities—aimed at shaping innovative processes, e.g., connected with costs and efficiency, employment, production waste, cooperation with external entities, innovation policy and regulations, social acceptance, as well as value management—in ensuring the security and sustainable development of enterprises in the environment. The objective of the study is to estimate the level of the importance of specific factors/activities related to shaping the frugal innovation processes in ensuring the security and sustainable development of enterprises, as well as the identification of the main groups of these factors/activities, and the comparison of enterprises in terms of the importance of these factors/activities in ensuring security and sustainable development. The study used both an inductive and a deductive approach. It used the cluster analysis (k-mean method), the analysis of descriptive statistics, and the following statistical tests: Kolmogorov–Smirnov test for one sample, Kruskal–Wallis test for independent samples, and U Mann–Whitney test for independent samples. In the study, four basic components were identified, which were used for subsequent quantitative verification of six research hypotheses. The study included 200 large enterprises from the most innovative sectors in Poland. The study showed that factors/activities related to the implementation of frugal innovation processes are of moderately high importance in ensuring the security and sustainable development of enterprises in the environment, as well as innovative enterprises that are dominated by entities characterized by the high importance of all factors/activities related to the implementation of frugal innovation processes in ensuring their safety and sustainable development in the environment. Furthermore, there are no statistically significant differences between enterprises in the importance of factors/activities related to the implementation of frugal innovation processes in ensuring the security and sustainability of these enterprises in the environment in the case of entities with different: lengths of service (i.e., the age of the enterprise), scale of operation, average annual turnovers, as well as profile of operation (i.e., the sector).

As an important national cultural treasure, intangible cultural heritage (ICH) faces certain problems in inheritance and sustainability. With the development of digital technology, the increasing research and application of virtual reality technology in ICH have been presented. This paper proposes a virtual experience system for Dongyang bamboo weaving, a traditional form of ICH craftsmanship, to display its historical background, cultural connotation, and technical craftsmanship. The learning module of the system is evaluated through the comparative experiments by 8 subjects. From the experimental data, compared with the computer, the average time for subjects to learn bamboo weaving in the system is shorter. The results of the questionnaire indicate that the learning module arouse their interest in bamboo weaving. The result shows the system is able to create an immersive and interactive scene for the users to understand bamboo weaving culture and learn the skills, which may encourage the sustainable development of bamboo weaving culture from the perspective of diffusion and provide research methods for other studies on traditional craftsmanship of ICH.

As the scale of the chemical park industry continues to expand, the impact of flooding on the park’s people and surrounding environment increases. This paper uses project scheduling theory to optimize the emergency rescue process in order to alleviate the suffering of affected people, promote the sustainable development of society and the environment, and take into account the characteristics of the dynamic evolution of flooding in chemical parks and the periodic renewal of emergency resources. We constructed a proactive–reactive multi-mode emergency rescue integrated scheduling model that aims to minimize the loss of affected people in the early stage of flooding and minimize the sum of the total deviation of the start time and end time of activities before and after reactive scheduling in the later stages of flooding. Furthermore, an ant colony algorithm was designed to solve the constructed model. Next, the effectiveness of the proposed model and solution algorithm was verified using simulations of actual cases. The calculation results show that using proactive–reactive integrated scheduling can improve the efficiency of emergency rescue and reduce the loss of affected people. Moreover, if a multi-mode rescue strategy is adopted, emergency rescue scheduling under four different resource combinations can reduce rescue duration and loss of affected people. The model can provide a decision reference for sustainable emergency rescue scheduling in chemical parks during a flood.

The coupling of and coordination between science and technology innovation (STI) and sustainable development (SD) is a basic requirement for Anhui Province’s economic high-quality development. According to panel data of 16 prefecture-level cities in Anhui Province from 2010 to 2021, the entropy method was applied to quantify the comprehensive development level of the two systems. The models of coupling coordination degree, grey GM (1, 1), and ARIMA prediction were constructed to analyze the spatiotemporal dynamic evolution features of the two systems’ coupling coordination. In the time series, the two systems’ comprehensive development showed a steady increase, a high level of coupling, and an increasing overall trend of coupling coordination. Moreover, the two systems’ coupling and coordination levels show the gradient spatial differentiation characteristics of “central > east > west.” The prediction shows that the two systems’ coupling coordination degree exhibits a monotonic increasing trend and reaches the optimal coupling coordination state around 2030. This study provides a decision-making reference for the implementation of the innovation-driven development strategy of Anhui Province.

This paper focuses on social and economic stability, as well as sustainable development, in the post-COVID era in light of the recent theoretical approaches and leadership practices. As governments worldwide resorted to repeated national- and regional-specific impositions of social and economic isolation in an (often failed) attempt to contain the spread of the coronavirus, their economies have been plunged into recessions, which have been deeper than those associated with the global financial crisis in the past. Successful business and economic leaders need to be aware of the dominant trends unfolding as the COVID-19 pandemic is gradually coming to its end and the New Globalization (a new era of international economy and international relations after COVID-19) is materializing. With global living, international travel, and trade interconnected, businesses need to plan for handling the future outbreaks and their economic, as well as social, consequences. The aim of this paper is to draw the lessons for business and economic leaders in the post-COVID era with a focus on the new trends and challenges for the sustainable development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The paper also presents an empirical model that assesses the novel ways of doing business and innovating using the sustainable economic practices after the COVID-19 pandemic. The model employs our own data collected from 450 managers and owners of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the Czech Republic and Russia. Our results show that innovation and digitalization (e.g., smart metering or the Internet of Things (IoT)) are becoming the main drivers of the sustainable economic transformation of small and medium enterprises in the post-pandemic period. These results might be useful for both academic researchers and business practitioners searching for new pathways for innovating their sustainable business practices and recreating their customer base in the post-COVID era.

The excessive use of pesticides and fertilizers reduces the quality of crops, harms human health, and causes environmental pollution, thus hindering the sustainable development of agriculture. In the process of realizing ecological agricultural production, audio control technology has increasingly become an area of concern. As a physical agricultural technology, it has become a combination of music acoustics and agricultural science. However, the research on the ecological role and function of audio control technology is still relatively lacking. In view of this, the authors studied the effects of audio control technology (specific frequency sound wave and different types of music) on the growth of lettuce, and showed that the specific frequency sound wave treatment produced by the plant acoustic frequency technology generator significantly increased the growth of lettuce compared with the condition of silent environment processing. Treatments of different types of music (electronic music, rock music, and classical music) promoted lettuce growth, especially the significant increase in the output of edible parts under the influence of electronic music. The research results further showed that the specific frequency sound wave treatment produced by the plant acoustic frequency technology generator enhanced the chlorophyll content of lettuce leaves (1.98 ± 0.15 mg/g), thus promoting photosynthesis. Different types of music had different effects on the photosynthesis of lettuce leaves; electronic music treatment increased the chlorophyll content of lettuce (1.48 ± 0.07 mg/g), and had the greatest impact.

There is a growing call globally for corporations to improve transparency in corporate reporting, along with the surge of enhancing disclosure of non-financial information. Companies are seen as agents for contributing to a better future, and hence could assist in achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs) 2030, via transparent non-financial disclosure. This review paper is premised on the fact that laws on non-financial disclosure may be useful in enhancing the transparency of companies’ conducts. Hence, this systematic review aims to synthesize the literature from 2014 to 2021 on the patterns and trends relating to regulations on non-financial disclosure in corporate reporting by companies. A keyword search followed by filters provided by the Web of Science Core Collection and SCOPUS databases resulted in a total of 369 documents being found. A total of 62 articles were reviewed after manual filtering and exclusion. A thematic review of these 62 articles identified 20 initial codes, which were then grouped into eight clusters: Directive 2014/95/EU, disclosure approaches, fiduciary duties of directors, stakeholder engagement, the effectiveness of disclosure regulations, the impacts of rules, the role of different actors and corporate accountability. The paper finds that the patterns and trends in the review set the path for future research on laws of non-financial disclosure, as they serve as a guideline for researchers for future studies.

Green finance (GF) is a vital strategy implemented by China to minimize carbon emissions to achieve targets of carbon peak and carbon neutrality. Thus, the objective of this study is to reduce carbon emissions by developing green finance practices in China. This study identifies, evaluates, and ranks the factors and sub-factors of green finance because it is the core issue for sustainable development. In this regard, this study utilizes the Delphi and fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (FAHP) method to analyze the main factors and sub-factors of green finance. The Delphi method finalizes the 6 factors and 26 sub-factors after a thorough investigation. The FAHP method was used to assess and rank the identified factors and sub-factors of green finance. The findings show that the political (POF) is the most crucial factor of green finance in the Chinese economy. The economic (ECF) and environmental (ENF) factors are ranked second and third important factors. The further results of the FAHP reveal that ecological and political identification (POF1), political stability (POF3), and climate commitments (POF2) are the top-ranked sub-factors of green finance. The results specify that green finance development is a very crucial strategy to minimize carbon emissions.

Herein, we report the performance of some low-cost biosorbents developed by environment-friendly modification of walnut shells. Two types of biosorbents were prepared by ecological modification of walnut shell surfaces: (1) biosorbents obtained by hot water treatment (WSH2O) and (2) biosorbents produced by mercerization (WSNaOH). Different techniques were used to evaluate the morphological, elemental, and structural modification of the biosorbents, by comparison with raw materials. These characterization techniques involved scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The biosorbents were employed for the removal of methylene blue (MB) and crystal violet (CV) cationic dyes (as model organic pollutants) from aqueous solutions. The kinetic adsorption data mainly followed the pseudo-first-order model. The maximum adsorption capacities of the produced biosorbents ranged from 102 to 110 mg/g and were observed at 330 K. Equilibrium data for adsorption were fitted to Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The calculated values of thermodynamic parameters suggested that the investigated adsorption processes were exergonic (ΔG < 0) and exothermic (ΔH < 0). In addition, a possible valorization of the cost-effective and eco-friendly spent biosorbents was tested by performing secondary adsorption of the anionic dyes.

With frequent climate change related disaster shocks and a huge burden of refugees from neighbor country’s conflict, Bangladesh needs to formulate effective strategies to support its most prospective sectors for ensuring sustainable development. This paper aims at disentangling the process of economic growth in Bangladesh to identify some prospective accelerating sectors, which could achieve constant economic growth with proper policy support. Using a modification of traditional structural decomposition analysis (SDA), we identify some prospective growth sectors in the Bangladesh economy. We have found labor intensive manufacturing and some high value added service sectors as key sectors for growth in Bangladesh. We compare the existing economic structure of Bangladesh with five other Asian lower income developing countries (LIDCs) and found all other countries have mostly similar economic structure, except Vietnam. Our analysis showed Bangladesh is mainly dependent on the textiles and food sectors in manufacturing and construction, real estate and inland transport sectors in service, for its quick growth. Most importantly, we found some new manufacturing sectors, such as basic metal and machineries, NEC, and recycling sectors, are constantly growing over the last decade, using our technique. Proper policy support to these high potential emerging sectors could help Bangladesh achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs) of ensuring economic growth and sustainable development through promoting industrial diversification.

In light of the increasing global food crisis, this study concentrated on the complex causality of sustainable food security in China. In the context of the agricultural green transformation, a comprehensive evaluation system of agricultural green development is constructed on China Yearbooks’ economic data and agricultural greening indices from 2012 to 2020. In addition, the coupling coordination degree model and fuzzy-set quantitative analysis are used to describe the path evolution of sustainable food security development in China. The results revealed that: (1) the comprehensive assessments were increased in recent years, and high score regions changed apparently, from the periphery to midland; (2) China’s green development and agricultural economic potential are currently in a transitional phase from basic to moderate synergy, and the higher coordinated degree is allocating to mid and southern areas during this period, and all of them keeps growing as well; and (3) under modern food security framework, the emphasis of China has gradually shifted from grain output and subsidy policies to high resources utilisation and human capital accumulation. Thus, China’s agricultural green transformation and sustainable food security are mutually reinforcing.

Innovation by knowledge workers is the foundation of sustainable development within an organization. Chinese policy makers use various innovation incentive policies to improve the innovation performance of knowledge workers at state-owned enterprises, which is in line with China’s goal of becoming an “innovative country”. This study compares the impacts of incentive policies issued by the central government, by local governments, and at the enterprise level (vertical dimension) and examines the effectiveness of varying policy content (horizontal dimension). The mechanism by which policy supply influences the innovation performance of knowledge workers at state-owned enterprises is theoretically analyzed, and empirical tests based on 1857 samples from field research are then conducted. The results show that incentive policies at each vertical level and each horizontal content level have a significant positive effect on the innovation performance of knowledge workers at state-owned enterprises, although the effects vary. The findings indicate that, along the vertical dimension, local government incentive policies are most effective. Along the horizontal dimension, salary and honor incentive policies are the most impactful. Policy providers should consider the differences in the effects of various innovation incentive policies to formulate relevant incentive policies to improve the innovation performance of state-owned enterprise knowledge workers.

Agriculture represents an important sector of the Romanian economy, with certain vulnerabilities under the current geo-political context and pedoclimatic changes with a direct impact upon food security at national and European levels. This paper analyzes the possibilities for revitalizing the Romanian agricultural sector, which was affected by the excessive inflation (especially via the price increases of fertilizers and fuels) and drought, both generating significant cereal and agricultural production losses. The current research highlights the main investment options for the managers of 219 Romanian agricultural cooperative companies, including the available financing alternatives. In our view, the investments realized within the agricultural cooperative companies support the creation and increase in value added and reduce specific risks, consolidating the role and status of agricultural producers within the food chain. The research evaluates the Romanian agricultural investment typologies and establishes a model of assessing these investments by correlating the information obtained from the questionnaire distributed. The research methods include analyzing the reference literature, building the database, collecting and processing the questionnaires’ observations, transforming the qualitative data into quantitative ones and modeling them with econometric instruments. The results obtained using the econometric model reveal the main investment directions to be integrating the production chains through economic association forms, including constructing and modernizing the warehouses, processing the primary products and obtaining higher value-added products, identifying various distribution channels, making the most of all available resources and focusing on digitalization, efficiency, circular economy and short supply chains. The study is of interest for the investors and managers of agricultural cooperative companies from Romania and Europe in view of securing sustainable development, enhancing the role of agricultural producers within the food chain and increasing efficiency of the agricultural activity, with a direct impact upon European food security.

While different in emphasis, spirituality and sustainable development are intertwined concepts that cannot be meaningfully discussed in isolation from each other. This is especially pertinent in Pacific Island countries that are characterised by both high degrees of vulnerability to climate change and high degrees of religious engagement. There is a paucity of research that examines the relationship between spirituality and sustainable development in contemporary human development discourse. To address this gap in the literature, this research employs an inductive and exploratory methodological approach to the study of major development organisations in Australia. It investigates what significance contemporary NGOs ascribe to matters of spirituality in the design and implementation of their community aid and development programming in the Pacific and beyond. To achieve its goal, the study conducts a systematic term frequency analysis in the annual reports of government-funded and independently funded NGOs, both faith-based and secular. It extends previous research by focusing expressly on the intersectionality of sustainable development and spirituality as a fertile space for interdisciplinary inquiry. The findings link development policy and practice more closely to the needs and worldviews of Pacific peoples. A better understanding of the spirituality–sustainability nexus will enable more effective, sustainable, equitable, ethical, and culturally acceptable development programming. Crucially, integrated approaches promise to make ongoing community development programmes and adaptation responses to climate-driven environmental change more effective and sustainable. Finally, it is an important aim of this study to conceptualise various opportunities for future research, thus laying the foundation for an important emergent research agenda.

This paper presents a methodological framework aiming to support the creation of a smart-tourism destination. Specifically, the study is realised in the frame of NEST, a European Union Interreg project aiming to create a smart-tourism destination in the Adriatic–Ionian area. Therefore, the study focuses on the southeastern Adriatic–Ionian area, as a portion of the European macro-region including the Italian regions of Molise and Apulia and the Balkan countries of Albania and Montenegro. This area presents a clear vocation for tourism, with a distinctive cultural heritage, attractive natural landscapes, and old culinary traditions offering a variety of eno-gastronomic and folk craft products. In the frame of the EU neighbour policies and in coherence with the objectives of the EU smart specialization strategy, several initiatives have been promoted for innovating the tourism offering in this area. Despite this, the full achievement of the creation of an Adriatic–Ionian smart destination calls for the adoption of a multidimensional strategy able to leverage knowledge-intensive dynamics of collaboration. This paper, therefore, aims to highlight the opportunities of adoptions and implications of this methodological framework for the cross-border marketing and management of the Adriatic–Ionian smart destination.

Background: Socio-economic changes prompt companies to disclose their sustainable development activities in the reporting, showing that they balance three capitals—economic, environmental, and social. On the other hand, while formulating strategies and goals, they consider the company’s widely understood environment, where its stakeholders are essential. As a result, the transparency and usefulness of the reported information are limited. Methods: The study employed financial statements’ content analysis and a statistical method (rank Spearman correlation, Shapiro–Wilk test). The percentage of change in critical areas for reporting transparency on financial assets was analyzed, before and during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Results: The research indicated that the identified critical reporting areas concerning financial assets showed a greater value change during the pandemic. Correlations between the accounting value of the company and the same critical reporting areas were significant. Conclusion: It has been shown that larger companies can use more accounting policy instruments; therefore, the reporting transparency on financial assets is potentially lower for these companies. The transparency of the surveyed corporate reports during the pandemic was lower.

Based on the upper echelon theory and the contingency theory, taking China’s A-share listed companies from 1993 to 2019 as a sample, this paper applies the binary logit model and multiple linear regression model to empirically study the relationship between industry life cycle, chief executive officer (CEO) functional background and corporate sustainable development. The research shows that compared with the mature stage of the industry, companies in the growth stage of the industry are more likely to appoint CEOs with a peripheral-function background and output-function background, but less likely to appoint those with a throughput-function background; matching a CEO’s functional background and industry life cycle can stimulate corporate sustainable development under certain conditions. Further research indicates that after distinguishing corporate ownership, the matching relationship is still valid, while having different effects on the sustainable development of different ownership enterprises. The conclusion of this research not only enriches the research results of the upper echelon theory, the contingency theory and corporate sustainable development, but also provides positive enlightenments for companies in CEO appointment and cultivation, and the arrangement of career planning and selection for senior executives.

Geoenergy resources are a new type of clean energy. Carbon neutralization and carbon peaking require significant system reform in the field of energy supply. As a clean, low-carbon, stable and continuous non carbon-based energy, geothermal energy can provide an important guarantee for achieving this goal. Different from the direct way of obtaining energy, ground energy indirectly obtains heat energy from shallow soil and surface water. The vigorous development of geoenergy resources under China’s carbon neutrality goal plays an important role in energy conservation and emission reduction. However, the current carbon trading market is not understood by the public. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze the impact of geoenergy resources on promoting sustainable digital marketing models. Every country around the world is working hard to meet its carbon neutrality goal. This paper analyzed the economic goal of carbon neutrality by analyzing the principle of the carbon trading market. For this reason, this paper designed a carbon trading price prediction algorithm based on the BP neural network (BPNN), which can predict prices in the carbon trading market in order to promote the accurate push of the digital marketing model and finally drive ground energy resources to promote a sustainable digital marketing model. The experimental results of this paper have proved that the price error rate of the BPNN carbon trading price prediction algorithm designed in this paper was within 10%, which was about 20% smaller than the traditional multiple regression analysis algorithm. This proved that the algorithm in this paper has a good performance and can provide accurate information to allow the digital marketing model to achieve sustainable digital marketing.

Pengpeng Beach, near Niaoyu Fishing Harbor, is an offshore sandbar that formed on the west side of Niaoyu Island in Penghu County, Taiwan, in 1995. Due to siltation, Pengpeng Beach also forms a sandbar tail that stretches toward the Niaoyu Fishing Harbor, meaning the Niaoyu Fishing Harbor and its navigation channel are facing serious siltation problems. This study aimed to find a solution for the siltation problem of the area by utilizing geotextile tubes, which are an economical material in terms of their material and construction cost, as well as being ecologically friendly in terms of their carbon emissions during production and transportation. Based on numerical simulations, location candidates for placing silt trap facilities were tested, selected, and modified to develop alternative mitigation plans. Evaluation of the mitigation plans was based on (1) the silt mitigation effect; (2) engineering cost; (3) public acceptance; and (4) impact on the surrounding landscape. The results showed that the proposed silt mitigation plan would be effective, and the plan was accepted by the local residents and government.

This article presents a research study into the dynamics of negative changes to the almost untouched coastal landscape of the Bay of Pomerania on the south-western coast of the Baltic Sea, taking into consideration the impact of the spatial development of the port of Świnoujście and of the development of leisure facilities in the small fishing villages of the Baltic coast. The authors highlight the natural landscape dynamics resulting from the topography, the aggression of the Baltic Sea against the beaches and sandy moraine hills, the dynamics of phyto-biological development in the endemic natural environment, and the dynamics of anthropogenic landscape changes resulting from the oversized spatial development of both residential and industrial buildings, as well as intermodal and port infrastructure development. The study analyzes natural values and their importance for both health and recreational purposes and shows the disproportional impact of economic/industrial development on the study area in recent times. The research was undertaken to verify the necessity of maintaining sustainability in the anthropogenic and industrial development undertaken in those areas, in order to protect sensitive ecological areas and to provide environmental compensation for the negative landscape changes already produced.

Living heritage runs the risk of being lost forever, or frozen as a practice of the past, if not promoted in the community. The preservation of this history, its transmission to following generations, and its ability to transform and adapt to any circumstance, are all made possible by strengthening living heritage. Investigating the function of living heritage in advancing education for sustainable development has been deemed a crucial goal by quality education as Sustainable Development Goal number 4 (SDG 4). The aim of this article is to gather information on living heritage conservation toward creating a sustainability community by using the community-based education model on the communities’ attitudes, cultural knowledge, and awareness of the importance of living heritage, and their participation level towards living heritage conservation in Melaka UNESCO World Heritage Site. This study uses the quantitative method of online questionnaire survey technique to collect data. There are 392 respondents from the multicultural community of Melaka World Heritage Site, who randomly responded. Based on the mean comparison in gender, age level, and race, there is a positive significant relationship between the importance of living heritage and the local community’s participation level. The increasing of the participation level to ACTIVE would lead to a higher altitude, cultural knowledge, and awareness of the importance of living heritage in the local community.

Sustainable urban mobility planning is a strategic and integrated approach that aims to effectively address the complexities of urban transportation. Additionally, vehicle emissions are still a significant problem found in cities. Its greatest concentration involves intersections, as they have the highest number of stop-and-go operations, resulting in the highest engine load. Although electrification of vehicles is underway, the coming years and the energy crisis may cause the full transformation and fulfillment of the European Green Deal to be postponed. This state of affairs means that much effort should still go into possibly modifying the current infrastructure to make it more environmentally friendly. The article addresses the use of vertical road markings such as “stop”, “give way”, and also signal controllers signs, at four-arm X intersections. The modeling of intersection variants was carried out in the traffic microsimulation software VISSIM. The created model was calibrated according to real world data. The actual part of the work concerns the assumption of specific traffic flow scenarios, for which measurements of delay and emissions of harmful exhaust components such as NOx and PM10 were made. The results obtained can have practical application in proposals for creating unequal intersections. Based on the results, it can be concluded that below the traffic volume value of 1200 vehicles/h, an intersection can be considered with a yield sign and stop sign for two directions of traffic. However, for traffic volumes from 1200 vehicles/h to 2000 vehicles/h, an intersection with stop signs can be used for all traffic directions. The results may also provide some information on the location of the crosswalks and the improvement of strategies to be introduced into the SUMPs.

Product design is a key aspect of human intelligence and creativity, attracting not only experts but also people without any formal design training. Although numerous people in developing countries design and manufacture products in metalworking microenterprises in the informal sector, there is still little knowledge about their design process. This paper aims to fill this gap in design knowledge. We aim to investigate the design processes in metalworking microenterprises in the informal sector of Tanzania. In particular, we aim to explore how these microenterprises identify consumer needs and requirements, how they determine the specifications for the product, how they generate and evaluate alternative product concepts, and how they define product details. To address these aims, semistructured interviews were carried out in metalworking microenterprises operating in the informal sector of Tanzania. The findings reveal many facets of their design processes, providing a sound basis upon which design methods and tools can be developed to support their design activities.

This paper examines how the corruption heritage of South-Eastern European sport can be used as content for educational strategies designed to improve the ethics and integrity in today’s sport. Hidden or dark history is useful when considering an education for a sustainable development approach to improving athletes’ moral skills. In education, examining mistakes can be a useful tool for preventing their recurrence as they provide examples for study and content for evidence-based learning. At the same time, it is a useful process, aiming to develop critical thinking and the decision-making skills in the area of sports. This paper provides examples on how narratives can be used in the field of sport moral education and what patterns reflecting the lack of integrity in sport can be identified. Because it has perpetuated and altered the image and principles of sports competition, diminishing trust in sport sustainability, it is important to identify how this effect can be approached from the perspective of the education for sustainable development (ESD), as applied to the area of sports. However, it is essential that sports integrity be valued by society and that all sports actors (athletes, coaches, officials) promote ethics and fair play.

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) and entrepreneurship are two essential topics in the current business landscape. However, despite the growing literature on these topics, there needs to be more comprehensive understanding of how they are related. In this conceptual article, we explore the linkages between CSR and entrepreneurship. First, we provide a definition and scope of entrepreneurship and then discuss the literature on CSR, highlighting different ways that businesses can engage in CSR. We argue that CSR and entrepreneurship are closely related, and propose a conceptual framework to understand how CSR can be integrated into the entrepreneurial process. Additionally, we identify three key areas of research in this emerging field: (1) the motivations for entrepreneurs to engage in CSR; (2) the impact of CSR on entrepreneurial ventures; and (3) the role of CSR in social entrepreneurship. We conclude with a discussion of our conceptual framework’s theoretical and practical implications, as well as future research directions for scholars and practitioners interested in CSR and Entrepreneurship.

This paper presents a framework for strategic innovation, the Comprehensive Strategic Analysis for Sustainability, aimed at identifying climate risks faced by organisations and developing appropriate responses to enhance their resilience. The framework integrates the analytical tools of comprehensive strategic analysis with a range of sustainability methodologies to offer a holistic approach to sustainable innovation. The framework was tested through a case study on a large multinational airport retailer, which helped identify the drivers and barriers to sustainably oriented innovation. The application of the framework informed criteria for assessing the suitability for different sustainable business model archetypes to be implemented but did not identify specific sustainable business model innovations that were appropriate for the case firm, highlighting the complexities of managing scope 3 emissions without taking systems-level and multi-stakeholder approaches. The Comprehensive Strategic Analysis for Sustainability framework presents a valuable contribution to approaches for strategic sustainable innovation by acting as a useful lens through which sustainable business model innovation in large industries can be viewed. This study suggests that such holistic frameworks have significant value for the business community in transitioning to low-carbon business models to mitigate the challenges of the climate emergency, whilst the CSAfS framework demonstrates potential as an effective tool for organisations seeking to enhance their sustainability and resilience.

The “United Nations (UN) 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” is calling on businesses to apply their creativity and innovation initiatives to tackle sustainable development challenges. In this respect, this study intends to propose a sustainability model for business use. The proposed model will facilitate businesses in selecting the appropriate Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicators, highlight potential sustainability “gaps” and emphasize the related best practices. For the development of the sustainability model, we used some basic economic principles (e.g., cost minimization, risk theory, etc.), a sustainability survey and a statistical study based on EU data. As a result, a quantitative model for the sustainable development assessment of organizations to formulate appropriate decision-making policies is proposed. The model was tested in a real-world context as a case study that was carried out at the Greek Atomic Energy Commission.

Sustainable furniture design has emerged as a prominent area of research, focusing on the interrelationships among people, furniture, and the environment. Despite being in its nascent stage, this field has garnered attention from scholars across disciplinary boundaries, seeking to explore new opportunities for industrial development and innovative perspectives. The objective of this paper is to clarify the extent of the current research literature, present the current significant themes, and elaborate further on the developed and potential future research directions in sustainable furniture design. In this research, a systematic analysis of bibliometric performance and scientific mapping of literature on sustainable furniture design was carried out by examining 1578 published papers from 2002 to 2023 selected from the Web of Science database, utilizing BibliometrixR package, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace tools for the analysis. The findings indicate a marked increase in research output in this area since 2012, with China being the primary contributor, although not achieving the highest citation rates. Furthermore, the study identifies 713 instances of international collaborations among researchers from 81 countries, with China and the United States being the most frequent partners. The research direction of highly cited literature, journals with the most published papers on sustainable furniture design, and authors with high total citation rates indicate a prominent connection between sustainable furniture design and fields such as product technical science, environmental science, ecology, and material research.
