Purpose: The suspension imposed on Universities due to COVID-19 pandemic impeded students' educational opportunities. Alternative teaching modalities have been used. Substitution of dissection courses on cadavers was a great challenge. Present study investigates students' view on the efficacy of the "online" pre-recorded "dissection educational videos" (DEVs) in assisting anatomy teaching, aiming to modernize the lectures and reinforce comprehension. Methods: The adequacy of the "online" anatomy courses and a possible new teaching modality were evaluated by the 2nd year pre-graduate students, employing an online questionnaire. Results: One hundred and ninety-six volunteer students participated. Before the pandemic, 78.1% of the students constantly attended the "auditorium-based" lectures and 73% used self-teaching tools (STTs) for a better understanding of anatomy. During pandemic, a slight lower frequency (76%) attended the "online" lectures and a higher frequency (84.2%) used at least one STT. Up to 59.2% of the students disagreed with the permanent replacement of the "auditorium-based" by the "online" lectures, while 62.8% supported the idea of parallel conduction of the lectures. Combined teaching tools were the most preferred resources. 83.2% of the students stated that the dissection labs' cancellation negatively affected their education, and 75.5% supported the permanent addition of the pre-recorded DEV series in the lectures. Conclusions: COVID-19 pandemic created the temporary need for pure remote education. During lockdown, the use of STTs has significantly increased. Purpose: Our study highlights the morphometry of the partial and complete atlas occipitalization (AOZ), its coexistence with fusions of the 2nd and 3rd cervical vertebrae and morphological and morphometric abnormalities of the posterior cranial fossa that are of paramount neurological importance. Methods: One hundred and eighty adult dry skulls, the atlas and axis vertebrae were examined. Results: Four skulls (2.2 %) showed AOZ. Two of them (1.1 %) presented a partial AOZ, one male skull (0.6 %) a complete AOZ and a female skull (0.6 %) had a fused left hemiatlas with the occipital bone and a fusion of the 2nd and 3rd cervical vertebrae. The inner anteroposterior and transverse diameters of the foramen magnum (FM) in the control group were 34.6 ± 3.46 and 29.3 ± 3.47 mm. Only the skull with the complete AOZ had a reduced outer anteroposterior diameter of the FM (29.8 mm), while no specimen was found with a reduced transverse diameter. A wide total decrease (range 13.1-50.9 %) in the surface area of the FM in skulls with AOZ was detected. Extracranial, the clivus length in two skulls with AOZ was smaller than the normal range. No skull was detected with a reduction in the intracranial length of the clivus. All skulls with the AOZ had a vermian fossa. Conclusions: The study adds important morphometric details about the partial and complete AOZ and correlates the phenomenon of synostosis with the narrowing of the FM, particularly in the case of complete AOZ. Awareness of the AOZ and other fusions of the upper cervical vertebrae and their topographical relations and attendant problems are of paramount importance to surgeons, when operate to the craniocervical junction, or interpret imaging studies to plan a safe surgery for nerve or spinal tissue decompression. Purpose: Sternal foramina represent developmental defects in the sternum, which occur due to incomplete fusion of the sternal ossification centers. Sternal foramina have been correlated with several clinical implications and constitute a subject of interest for the forensic practice. The aim of this study is to define their incidence in Greek population. Methods: The presence of midline foramen was studied in 60 dried, adult sterna derived from the Anatomy Department of Medical School of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Measurements were made with a 0.01-mm accuracy caliber and photographic documentation was obtained. Additionally, computed tomography scanning of the sterna was performed. Results: Sternal foramina were found in 11 subjects, resulting in an incidence of 18.3 % over the total population. In 27.3 % of the subjects with sternal foramen, a single sternal foramen was observed in the body of the sternum, while in 45.5 % of the sterna presenting sternal foramina, multiple xiphoidal foramina were noticed. In two specimens, association of xiphoidal foramina with sternal cleft was documented. Conclusion: Sternal foramina are variant quite common in the population, with distinct imaging pattern and awareness of their existence is important for the physician. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To define the optimum design of the anatomical preshaped olecranon plate. Methods: The geometry of the proximal ulna was studied in 200 paired Caucasian ulnae, using a digital caliper and goniometer. Gender and side differences were analyzed. Results were compared with the corresponding geometrical parameters of three olecranon plates with different contour. All three plates were placed on the dorsal surface of a 'model' ulna, i.e., a right dried ulna having osteometric parameters similar to the averages of our sample, and plate-to-bone fit was examined in two planes. Results: The proximal ulna had an 8.48° (2.1°-15.7°) mean varus angulation and an 8.49° (1.70°-14.10°) mean anterior angulation, located on average 8.19 cm (5.68-11.66 cm) and 8.63 cm (5.28-11.92 cm) distal to the bone's most proximal point, respectively. The mean olecranon angle was 110.34° (98.70°-125.80°) and the olecranon length was 1.58 cm on average (1.20-2.12 cm). Only the plate having both varus and anterior angulation presented a good plate-to-bone fit in both planes. Conclusions: A 'true' anatomical preshaped olecranon plate should have both varus and anterior angulation close to the average angulations of the normal ulna and located in a certain distance from its proximal edge. The olecranon part of the plate should primarily not exceed the olecranon length and secondarily be close to the average olecranon angle. We believe that such a plate may facilitate intraoperative restoration of the proximal ulna complex anatomy, when dealing with comminuted or Monteggia fractures, thus leading to better postoperative results. Purpose: This study aimed at summarizing the non-pathologic bony structures which are involved in the pathogenesis of snapping scapula and evaluate their incidence, morphology and correlation to gender, side and age. Methods: The angulation in the sagittal plane between the supraspinatus and infraspinatus portion of the medial border was measured in 140 dried scapulae. In 264 dried scapulae the medial scapular border morphology was classified into three types and the presence of the Luschka's tubercle and the teres major tubercle or process was recorded. Correlation to gender, side and age was examined using SPSS. Results: The mean angulation between the supraspinatus and infraspinatus portion of the medial border was 154.6° ± 8.8°. Τhe medial scapular border was straight in 99 (37.5 %), convex in 135 (51.1 %) and concave in 30 bones (11.4 %). The Luschka's tubercle was present in eight bones (3 %), while teres major tubercle was found in 114 scapulae (43.2 %). A teres major process was present in 18 bones (6.8 %). The process was curved towards the chest wall in nine bones (3.4 %), while in the other nine scapulae (3.4 %) it had no curvature. Conclusions: The non-pathologic bony structures which predispose to snapping scapula are not rare and include the concave medial scapular border, the Luschka's tubercle and the teres major process curved towards the chest wall. Orthopaedic surgeons should bear in mind these non-pathologic bony structures in order not to be overlooked during the diagnostic procedure of a snapping scapula since they usually require surgical treatment. We report a unique bilateral combination of multiple variations in the superficial venous system of the neck of a 77-year-old male cadaver. On the right side of the neck, the external jugular vein (EJV) crossed superficial to the lateral third of the clavicle constituting a common trunk with the cephalic vein (CV) that drained into the subclavian vein (SCV). On the left side the EJV descended distally, passed over the anterior surface of the medial third of the clavicle and drained into the SCV. The posterior external jugular vein (PEJV) crossed superficial to the lateral third of the clavicle and terminated into the CV, providing an additional communicating branch to the EJV. Knowledge of both normal and abnormal anatomy of the veins of the neck plays an important role for anesthesiologists or cardiologists doing catheterization, orthopedic surgeons treating clavicle fractures and general surgeons performing head and neck surgery, to avoid inadvertent injury to these vascular structures.
