Purpose: Using a minority stress paradigm, this paper examines the relationship between anti-transgender discrimination, harassment, and violence among transgender adults. Methods: Data from the 2015 U.S. National Transgender Survey were used to examine twenty types of anti-transgender experiences/problems (e.g., harassment at work, problems with police officials, verbal and physical assaults) in a sample of 27,715 transgender Americans aged 18 or older. Binge drinking during the previous month was the dependent variable, and eight control measures were examined in the multivariate analysis. Results: Experiencing any of the twenty types of anti-transgender discrimination, harassment, or violence increased the odds of binge drinking by 48%. Experiencing many such problems increased the odds of binge drinking by 104%. Multivariate analysis showed that anti-transgender discrimination, harassment, and violence remains a predictor of binge drinking even when other key measures are taken into account. Younger people, racial minority group members, and persons who were not married or "involved" were at particularly great risk. Conclusions: Consistent with the minority stress paradigm, the more different types of anti-transgender experiences people had, the more likely they were to engage in binge drinking. Targeted intervention needs to help transgender persons to avoid anti-transgender discrimination, harassment, and violence to the greatest extent possible, and to develop resiliency skills whenever they are victimized. Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is highly prevalent among adults in the US and is associated with substantial personal and societal costs. Yet only a small percentage of adults with AUD initiate treatment, including those with severe AUD symptoms who are most in need of treatment. In this paper we use latent profile analysis (LPA) to describe differences in symptoms of AUD severity and alcohol-related consequences among untreated adults with severe AUD symptoms who were recruited from the community. Identification of such differences will result in better understanding of this population and will improve methods of treatment outreach. The LPAs were conducted on the baseline data of 403 (50% male, 77% White, M age = 40.74 with severe AUD recruited from the community and enrolled in a trial of an intervention designed to encourage treatment initiation. Participants reported no prior AUD treatment history. The LPAs were based on indicators of AUD severity, alcohol-related negative consequences, and self-reported intention to initiate AUD treatment. The LPAs revealed 4 profiles. Profile membership was predicted by baseline participant sex and whether they were living with a partner and was associated with baseline past 30-days alcohol consumption. The findings characterize and describe the variability among adults in the community with untreated severe AUD on variables that tend to motivate such individuals to seek treatment, which could significantly advance treatment outreach efforts. Background: Smoking-related health disparities are prevalent in the Latinx community in the United States (US). Although Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) are known to contribute to a myriad of health problems among the Latinx population, there is relatively limited work expressly aimed at elucidating SDoH among Latinx smokers. Perceived racial/ethnic discrimination is one SDoH construct that may be especially relevant to understanding smoking-related cognition for Latinx smokers in the US. Smoking outcome expectancies, reflecting beliefs about the consequences of smoking, are established cognitive processes that have been linked to the maintenance and relapse of smoking. The purpose of the present work is to investigate perceived racial/ethnic discrimination in relation to smoking outcome expectancies amongst Latinx smokers in the US. Method: Participants included 338 English-speaking Latinx adult daily cigarette smokers from the US (Mage = 35.5 years; SD = 8.65; age range 18–61; 37.3% female). Results: Results indicated that perceived racial/ethnic discrimination was related to greater levels of negative reinforcement, positive reinforcement, and appetite-weight control expectancies, but not negative consequences expectancies. Discussion: Overall, the current findings provide novel insight into the relationship between perceived racial/ethnic discrimination and smoking outcome expectancies amongst English-speaking Latinx cigarette users in the US. This study examined levels of substance-specific risk factors such as perception of harm from substance use among young adults in a range of cannabis-permissive environments. The main objective was to inform future preventive interventions aimed at reducing cannabis use in the context of increasingly permissive environments. Data came from the Community Youth Development Study (CYDS) collected in 2016 when participants were about 23 years old (n = 1,722 participants residing in 46 U.S. states). Young adults self-reported their perceptions about the harms related to cannabis, alcohol, and cigarette use; attitudes about and ease of access to cannabis and other substances; and perceived wrongfulness and social acceptability of cannabis, alcohol, and cigarette use and of selling of cannabis and other illegal drugs. Young adults in more permissive cannabis contexts reported higher levels of all cannabis-specific risk factors (e.g., greater access to and more favorable attitudes about cannabis use), except for perception of harm from regular cannabis use. However, permissiveness of the cannabis environment was not associated with heightened levels of risk factors for other substance use (such as alcohol, cigarettes, and opioids). Future preventive interventions for young adults living in more permissive cannabis contexts may need to focus on cannabis-specific risk factors in particular and go beyond considerations of harm from regular use. Background: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are a major public health issue linked to negative health outcomes. Yet, few recent studies drawing on national data have examined the association between ACEs and binge drinking. Objective: The objective of this study was to examine the association between ACEs and binge drinking among adults in the United States and whether this association is dependent on sex. Methods: Data for this study were obtained from the 2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey. An analytic sample of 41,322 adults aged 18–64 years (50.7% male) from 17 states was analyzed using binary logistic regression. The outcome variable was binge drinking, and the main explanatory variable was ACEs. Results: Of the 41,322 respondents, 21.3% engaged in binge drinking. About 30% of the respondents had no ACEs and 23.9% had four or more ACEs. In the multivariable logistic regression, we observed that sex moderated the association between ACEs and binge drinking. Odds were 1.36 times higher for females who experienced two ACEs (aOR = 1.36 p <.05, 95% CI = 1.04–1.77) and 1.58 times higher for females who experienced three ACEs (aOR = 1.58 p <.01, 95% CI = 1.17–2.12) to engage in binge drinking. Other factors associated with binge drinking include younger age, non-Hispanic White, higher income level, higher education, not being married, being overweight, and history of cigarette smoking. Conclusion: The findings of this study underscore the importance of developing sex-appropriate screening and intervention strategies to support individuals exposed to ACEs and potentially mitigate negative health outcomes later in life. Background: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are potentially traumatic events, which can have long-term, negative consequences. Few studies have examined ACEs' relationship to marijuana use. Objectives: We examined the association between ACEs and past-month marijuana use among adults and the pathways between childhood adversity and marijuana use. Methods: Adults from five states (n = 22,991) who responded to the 2019 Behavioral Risk Factors Surveillance System were included. We examined the prevalence of ACEs and marijuana use. We employed generalized structural equation modeling to assess the relationship between ACEs and marijuana use and the role of depression and poor mental and physical health as possible mediators. Results: Overall, 65.0% of the population reported 1+ ACE. Heavy marijuana use and past-month marijuana use prevalence rates were 10.3% and 5.0%, respectively. We found mediation effects for depression and poor mental health but not poor physical health. The number of ACEs was associated with a statistically significant increase in any past-month marijuana use—indirect effects ranged from 1.0 (95% CI, 1.0–1.0) to 1.4 (95% CI, 1.2–1.7), direct effects ranged from 1.1 (95% CI, 07–1.7) to 5.3 (95% CI 3.2–8.8), and total effects ranged from 1.1 (95% CI, 0.7–1.7) to 5.9 (95% CI, 3.6–9.8). Women, married persons, and middle aged and older adults had a lower odds of marijuana use. Reporting at least one HIV risk behavior was associated with an increased odds of marijuana use. This study examined differences among current vapers, those susceptible to vaping, and those non-susceptible to vaping among adolescents and young adults (AYAs) in the U.S. We sought to understand vaping-related characteristics, preferences, and beliefs across these populations to inform prevention efforts. Methods: Participants were N=543 adolescents and N=557 young adults recruited in mid-2019 in the U.S. In two separate cross-sectional surveys, we assessed vaping preferences, tobacco product use, and both health harm and addiction risk beliefs about vaping. We ran separate multivariate logistic regressions to assess differences in risk beliefs across the three distinct e-cigarette groups among AYAs. Results: A majority of AYAs were either current vapers (adolescents: 32%, young adults: 36%) or susceptible to vaping (adolescents: 34%, young adults: 24%). In both samples, pod-based devices were the most common device type used, and fruit and mint/menthol were the most commonly used flavors. In multivariate analyses, adolescent (p<.05) and young adult (p<.05) current vapers both had lower risk beliefs about the health harms of vaping compared to those susceptible to vaping. Susceptible adolescents also had lower health harm risk beliefs compared to those who were non-susceptible (p<.05). Addiction risk beliefs seldom predicted use or susceptibility in multivariate analyses, with only susceptible young adults having lower addiction beliefs than those non-susceptible (p<.05). Conclusion: Results from this study highlight the role of health harm risk beliefs among AYA vapers and those susceptible to vaping. This study aimed to identify subgroups of adults based on comorbid psychiatric disorders and to examine the relationship with current smoking. Method: The National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III, 2012–2013, sampled, recruited, and assessed 36,309 adults, with interviews on drug use and other characteristics. The Alcohol Use Disorder and Associated Disabilities Interview Schedule DSM-5 Version (AUDADIS-5) was used to identify psychiatric conditions. Latent class models were developed based on various psychiatric diagnoses. Multinomial logistic regression estimated the significance of covariates in predicting class membership. Results: Four latent classes optimally distinguished the population: no comorbid conditions (63%), comorbid affective disorders (16%), those with alcohol use disorder (AUD; 17%), and a highly comorbid subgroup (i.e., co-occurring affective and drug use disorders; 4%). Current smoking was about twice as prevalent in the classes defined by psychiatric conditions compared to the group with no comorbid conditions. The highly comorbid class was more likely to be current smokers than the comorbid affective disorders class and the AUD class. Furthermore, the highly comorbid class was younger and had lower income, and the AUD class had a higher proportion of males than the other classes. Conclusions: Cigarette smoking was higher in the nearly 40% of respondents characterized by psychiatric disorders, particularly those with drug use disorders. Correlates of membership in these classes were consistent with known vulnerabilities for smoking, highlighting the need for mental health interventions and future research to explicitly address tobacco cessation in clinical settings based on psychiatric diagnoses. Background: In the United States (US), electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use prevalence has increased since 2010. Few studies, however, have addressed frequency of use at the population-level. This study examines patterns and correlates of e-cigarette use frequency in a novel national sample. Methods: Data were from 36,277 US adults interviewed between 2012 and 2013 for the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III (NESARC-III). Sociodemographic characteristics, other tobacco/drug use, and psychiatric disorders were compared by e-cigarette use status (i.e. current [past-month], past, never) and e-cigarette use frequency (i.e. infrequent [≤3 days/month], moderate [1–6 days/week], daily). Multinomial logistic regression models compared correlates of e-cigarette use status and e-cigarette use frequency. Results: Current e-cigarette use was low in adults (1.4%) and past e-cigarette use was 3.9%. Among current e-cigarette users, 38.1% were infrequent users, 32.9% were moderate users, and 29.0% were daily users. Compared to infrequent e-cigarette users, daily users were more likely to be male and older, but less likely to be current cigarette smokers and alcohol drinkers (p's <.05). Compared to daily e-cigarette users, moderate users were more likely be female, current cigarette smokers, and fall into the 25–34 age group (p's <.05). Moderate and daily e-cigarette users had higher prevalence of current extra-medical opioid use than infrequent users (p's <.05). Conclusions/Importance: E-cigarette users were most often infrequent users versus moderate or daily users. Compared to infrequent and moderate users, daily e-cigarette users were less likely to be current alcohol drinkers or cigarette smokers.
