The paper discusses the style of tourist advertising and Information of Poland and Austria. It compares the verbal and the visual codes of the Polish and Austrian tourism brochures. The most important difference between both corps of texts is the very emotional communication of the Austrian papers and a very rational communication of the Polish papers. The causes of the discovered differences are discussed there. The differences can influence the translation of the brochures in a good or in a bad way. The fact of the sensitivity to the differences of the text genre in Poland and Austria is the essential feature of the translator. The sensitivity is the result of the awareness of the different conventions of genre.

The starting point o f this contribution is the assumption that there is an overall uncertainty about the use o f the term discourse in various disciplines. The author presents different ways of understanding discourse in philosophy (primarily by Habermas and Foucault). The core part of the paper discusses the heterogeneous linguistic concepts of discourse, starting from the idea o f discourse as a simple conversation through Critical Discourse Analysis and institutionalised interai rons up to textology-based concept of discourse. Particular attention is devoted to the use o f the notion o f discourse in sociology (and its related disciplines such as historiography, political science and media stuaies). When describing the concepts o f discourse in various disciplines the author draws attention to the vaned methods o f discourse analysis applied there, including the universal model by Wamke/Spitzmiiller. The finał section identifies and critically discusses problem areas in discourse studies. The paper also postulates that the current the fascination with Foucault should be abandoned wlien circumscribing the scope of discourse studies in favour of strwing for pragmatic and communicative adeąuacy.

The word refugees was chosen the word of the year 2015 in many European countries (in Poland, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, France and Russia). This word as well as other candidates were at that time – in the truest sense of the word – on everyone’s lips. They were literally hitting the headlines. No surprise. Millions of people, mainly from the Middle East and North Africa, who wanted to be let in, were knocking at the gates of Europe. In the media discourse this phenomenon was called ‘crisis’ (the refugee crisis, the migration crisis). This article aims to analyse the language profiling of the phenomenon itself and the people it referred to both in Polish and German press, i.e. the refugees, at the beginning of the crisis, that is in the summer of 2015.
