This research provides a study for an experimental program using sand‐perlite‐lightweight reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened and anchored with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) materials. The main objective of this work is to showcase the efficiency of using U‐wrap anchors to secure the externally applied CFRP sheets on lightweight RC beams. A series of six full‐scale T‐beams with an increasing number of CFRP U‐wraps per shear span was prepared and tested. The use of U‐wrap anchorage enhanced the flexural performance of the sand‐lightweight concrete beams by progressively delaying the premature debonding of CFRP sheets as a direct function of the number of U‐wraps used per shear span. The beam flexural capacity gradually improved from 116 kN without the use of U‐wrap anchors to 182 kN when using six U‐wraps per shear span, which reflects a significant enhancement. Similarly, the ultimate deflection gradually improved from 56 mm for the beam without U‐wrap anchors to 94 mm when applying six U‐wraps per shear span. A design model established earlier, for normal weight concrete, has been successfully qualified to yield accurate findings against the experimental results. Also, the outcome of this study interestingly showed that the ultimate strength results of the anchored beams were close to their counterparts of normal weight concrete conducted on identical beams. The dual‐function retrofitting system that uses the carbon‐fabric reinforced cementitious matrix (C‐FRCM) as both the anode of impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) system and the structural strengthening (SS) material, that is, an ICCP‐SS system, is investigated. The experimental program mainly focused on the shear behavior of C‐FRCM strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) continuous beam under the dual‐function retrofitting system. The influence of anode polarization on the shear strengthening of RC continuous beams is analyzed. Shear tests were conducted on a total of 14 corroded RC continuous beams to investigate the influence of key parameters, including anode polarization degree of prefabricated C‐FRCM plate, layer of carbon fiber mesh and side‐wrapping. The failure modes, shear capacities, and load‐deflection curves of the shear‐strengthened RC continuous beams are reported. Based on the test results, the applicability of relevant design codes was evaluated and found to provide rather conservative predictions for the shear capacity of the examined C‐FRCM strengthened RC continuous beams. This study aims to develop a new hybrid strengthening approach for reinforced concrete beams by integrating near‐surface mounted shape memory alloys (SMAs) and externally bonded carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs). Due to the superelasticity and shape memory effect of SMAs, the proposed strengthening can enhance the flexural strength of concrete beams without compromising ductility. The recovery behavior of deformed SMA wires was studied to determine the optimal prestrain level that can achieve the highest recovery stress. Afterward, the flexural performance of concrete beams strengthened with SMA, CFRP and both was investigated by performing three‐point tests. The results show that integrating SMA and CFRP has more influence on increasing the ultimate moment than the cracking moment and leads to a more significant improvement in the ultimate moment than individually utilizing SMA and CFRP. Besides, the effect of the integrated approach on enhancing the ductility is more notable than increasing the ultimate moment. The ultimate moment was analytically calculated, and the calculations show reasonable agreement with experimental results. This study undertakes a comprehensive investigation of the shear behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened by near surface mounted (NSM) carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates. Different strengthening configurations were employed by varying the length and inclination angle of the CFRP laminates. Results indicated that NSM‐CFRP strengthening increased the load‐carrying capacity, ductility, stiffness, and toughness from 8% to 41%, 9% to 78%, 24% to 159%, and 22% to 254%, respectively. Results also confirmed that as the CFRP laminate length decreases, the efficacy of the strengthening process increases, where the load‐carrying capacity, ductility, stiffness, and toughness improved from 8% to 19%, 10% to 21%, 8% to 68%, and 26% to 119%, respectively. Also, the comparative results revealed that specimens strengthened with 45°‐inclined CFRP laminates versus those strengthened with vertical laminates had higher load‐carrying capacity (2%–10%), ductility (1%–35%), stiffness (24%–40%), and toughness (13%–32%). Two analytical formulations to predict the contribution of the possible distinct NSM‐CFRP shear strengthening configurations for the shear resistance of RC beams were considered. Results indicated an agreement between the experimental and the analytical results for both formulas, where the average values for the safety factor, k, k=Vtana/Vtexp were 0.80 and 0.73, with corresponding values of standard deviation of 0.195 and 0.125, respectively. Present work demonstrates the experimental investigation on four large scale reinforced concrete (RC) beams cast with and without smart concrete to study strain and damage sensing properties (for health monitoring), effect of carbon fiber (CF) on ultimate strength, crack pattern, and stiffness response under monotonically increased loading. A total of four beams, one without and three with smart concrete (CF‐based concrete) having similar dimensions, similar percentage of reinforcement, similar aspect ratio, same grade of steel but having variable strengths of concrete were cast and tested for evaluating above said properties. Micro CFs were placed only in mid‐span region for a length of 350 mm and a depth of 55.5 mm at top and bottom surface of the beam from economical point of view for health monitoring. From obtained experimental results, it was found that RC beam embedded with smart concrete can be used for structural health monitoring (SHM) and obtained fractional change in resistance of smart concrete can be corelated with compressive strain in concrete and tensile strain in steel up to good extent. Along with strain and damage sensing properties, the effect of smart concrete on structural properties is also reported and it was found that, apart from showing positive results for SHM, it also increases ultimate strength carrying capacity of the same RC beam. This paper investigates the influence of cyclic preloading on the fatigue behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams rehabilitated with near surface mounted (NSM) carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) reinforcement. The study includes eight RC beams with dimensions of 152.4 × 152.4 × 1,521 mm. Strengthened and nonstrengthened specimens were tested under monotonic loading to obtain the flexural static capacity. Two strengthened specimens were tested as a reference under constant amplitude cyclic stress without prefatiguing. Four nonrehabilitated RC beams were prefatigued to simulate service loading conditions. Later, these RC beams were rehabilitated with NSM CFRP reinforcement and tested under the same cyclic stress range of the reference specimens. Mid‐span deflection, strain of tension steel rebars and CFRP rods, stiffness degradation, and energy dissipation were analyzed and evaluated. Experimental results show that the rehabilitated prefatigued RC beams had similar stiffness degradation and failure modes to the reference strengthened RC beams. The rehabilitated RC beams had an improvement in the fatigue responses when compared to the reference strengthened RC beams. Moreover, the postfatigue monotonic behavior of the rehabilitated RC beams showed an increase in the elastic modulus and a decrease in ductility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) beams in shear using carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) has been found to enhance, significantly, the shear capacity of existing RC beams. In previous studies the use of steel plates bonded externally to the RC beams was found to improve the shear performance of these beams. Most of the previous work was conducted on RC beams having rectangular sections. The main objective of this paper is to gain a better understanding and enhance the experimental database of shear behaviour of RC T-beams strengthened with externally bonded reinforcement (EBR) systems. The present study encompasses some of the important parameters such as direction of EBR fibre alignment and the strengthening materials made of carbon-fibre sheets, steel plates or steel bars for shear strengthening. The contribution of EBR to the shear capacity of the T-beams was computed using three design codes and compared with the experimental output. A series of RC T-beams was tested experimentally with the CFRP and steel strips carefully aligned and spaced. A reference T-beam and a rectangular beam were tested as well to explore the effect of the internal shear reinforcement and the existence of the flange on the shear capacity of the beam.
