Basic principles of operation and characteristics of scintillation and semi-conductor detectors used for solar hard X-ray and gamma-ray spectrometers are presented. Scintillation materials such as NaI offer high stopping power for incident gamma rays, modest energy resolution, and relatively simple operation. They are, to date, the most often used detector in solar gamma-ray spectroscopy. The scintillator BGO has higher stopping power than NaI, but poorer energy resolution. The primary advantage of semi-conductor materials such as Ge is their high-energy resolution. Monte-Carlo simulations of the response of NaI and Ge detectors to model solar flare inputs show the benefit of high resoluton for studying spectral lines. No semi-conductor material besides Ge is currently available with adequate combined size and purity to make general-use hard X-ray and gamma-ray detectors for solar studies.

The physical processes responsible for microwave emission in solar flares are outlined, and examples of how microwave observations have been interpreted in terms of physical parameters are described. Selected results obtained during Solar Cycle 21 with the microwave observatories dedicated to synoptic observations of the sun are summarized. The status and future plans for these facilities at Bern and in Japan are presented. Also discussed are the instrument capabilities required at microwave frequencies to achieve the objectives of a future facility for high-energy solar physics.

The scientific and technical aspects of high-resolution gamma-ray and X-ray imaging of solar flares are discussed. The scientific necessity for imaging observations of solar flares and the implications of future observations for the study of solar flare electrons and ions are considered. Performance parameters for a future hard X-ray and gamma-ray imager are summarized. Techniques for high-energy photon imaging including direct collimation imaging, coded apertures, and modulation collimators are surveyed. The technique of Fourier-transform imaging is examined. The options for detectors and grid fabrication are reviewed. Several planned future high-energy imagers are described.

In the present study of the microwave and hard X-ray characteristics of 13 solar flares emitting microwave fluxes greater than 500 solar flux units, simultaneous 3-35 GHz and hard X-ray observations were conducted in the 30-500 keV energy range. An analysis is conducted to determine whether the same distribution of energetic electrons can explain both emissions; tests for any correlations between them yield results suggesting that optically thick microwave emission, near the peak frequency, originates in the same electron population that produces the hard X-rays. A single temperature model and a multitemperature model were tested for consistency with the coincident X-ray and microwave spectra at microwave burst maximum; neither model, however, attempts to explain the high frequency component of the microwave spectrum.

Expressions which give the effective color temperatures and corresponding emission measures for solar X-ray events observed with instruments onboard any of the GOES satellites are developed. Theoretical spectra were used to simulate the solar X-ray input at a variety of plasma temperatures. These spectra were folded through the wavelength dependent transfer functions for the two GOES detectors. The resulting detector responses and their ratio as a function of plasma temperature were then fit with simple analytic curves. Over the entire range between 5 and 30 million degrees, these fits reproduce the calculated color temperatures within 2 percent and the calculated emission measures within 5 percent. With the theoretical spectra, similar expressions for any pair of broadband X-ray detectors whose sensitivities are limited to wavelengths between 0.2 and 100 A are calculable.
