This paper presents an effective approach for solving economic load dispatch problems contemplating the scheduling a set of thermal generating units to produce a specific power at low consumption costs. These problems can be thought of as nonlinear, non-convex, and highly constrained optimization problems with a large number of local minima. To cope with the above issues in solving such problems, a new meta-heuristic named capuchin search algorithm was adopted. To boost the search performance of this algorithm as well as to mitigate its early convergence and regression to the local optimum, it was hybridized with another algorithm and improved using several positive amendments. First, a memory element was added to this algorithm to ameliorate its position and velocity update mechanisms in order to exploit the most encouraging candidate solutions. Second, two adaptive parametric functions were used to manage the exploration and exploitation features of this algorithm and balance them appropriately. Finally, the hybridization was made using the gradient-based optimizer to strengthen the intensification ability of this algorithm and balance its searching ability to fulfill sensible search performance. The proficiency of the proposed algorithm was divulged by assessing it on computationally difficult economic load dispatch problems under 6 different tests with a generator of 3, 13, 40, 80, and 140 units, each with different constraints and load conditions. The proposed algorithm provided the best performance among many other competitors. Cooperation search algorithm (CSA) is a new metaheuristic algorithm inspired from the team cooperation behaviors in modern enterprises and is characterized by fast convergence. However, for complex multimodal problems, it may get trapped into local optima and suffer from premature convergence for the shortcoming of population updating guided only by leading individuals. In this paper, the issue of low convergence efficiency and convergence accuracy of the CSA algorithm on complex multimodal problems is dramatically alleviated by integrating the mutation and crossover operators in DE algorithm. Experimental results demonstrate the better performance of CCSA on convergence speed and accuracy as compared to other existing optimizers. Furthermore, aiming at the problem that there is no universal approach for the multi-degree reduction in Ball Bézier surfaces under different interpolation constrains, we propose a new method to solve this problem by introducing metaheuristic methods, where the change of interpolation constrains is treated as the change of decision variables. The modeling examples show that the proposed method is effective and easy to implement under different interpolation constrains, which can achieve the multi-degree reduction in Ball Bézier surfaces at one time and can simplify the degree reduction procedure significantly. In order to solve the problems of low learning efficiency and slow convergence speed when mobile robot uses reinforcement learning method for path planning in complex environment, a reinforcement learning method based on each round path planning result is proposed. Firstly, the algorithm adds obstacle learning matrix to improve the success rate of path planning; and introduces heuristic reward to speed up the learning process by reducing the search space; then proposes a method of dynamically adjusting the exploration factor to balance the exploration and utilization in path planning, so as to further improve the performance of the algorithm. Finally, the simulation experiment in grid environment shows that compared with Q-learning algorithm, the improved algorithm not only shortens the average path length of the robot to reach the target position, but also speeds up the learning efficiency of the algorithm, so that the robot can find the optimal path more quickly. This paper considers a passive target localization problem based on the noisy time of arrival measurements obtained from multiple receivers and a single transmitter. The maximum likelihood (ML) estimator for this localization problem is formulated as a highly nonlinear and non-convex optimization problem, where conventional optimization methods are not suitable for solving such a problem. Consequently, this paper proposes an improved adaptive hybrid firefly differential evolution (AHFADE) algorithm, based on hybridization of firefly algorithm (FA) and differential evolution (DE) algorithm to estimate the unknown position of the target. The proposed AHFADE algorithm dynamically adjusts the control parameters, thus maintaining high population diversity during the evolution process. This paper aims to improve the accuracy of the global optimal solution by incorporating evolutionary operators of the DE in different searching stages of the FA. In this regard, an adaptive parameter is employed to select an appropriate mutation operator for achieving a proper balance between global exploration and local exploitation. In order to efficiently solve the ML estimation problem, this paper proposes the well-known semidefinite programming (SDP) method to convert the non-convex problem into a convex one. The simulation results obtained from the proposed AHFADE algorithm and well-known algorithms, such as SDP, DE and FA, are compared against Cramér–Rao lower bound (CRLB). The statistical analysis has been performed to compare the performance of the proposed AHFADE algorithm with several well-known algorithms on CEC2014 benchmark problems. The weapon target assignment (WTA) problem is an important task to tactical arrangements in military commitment operations. It describes the optimal method to allocate defense in opposition to threats in fighting situations. It is an NP-complete issue in which no accurate outcome for all conceivable situations is known. The time performance of created algorithms is a major challenge in modeling the WTA problem, which has only been lately considered in related papers. This article improves the recently developed algorithm called improved Tunicate Swarm Algorithm (iTSA) which is inspired by the natural behavior of tunicates to solve the WTA problem. To solve engineering problems with evolutionary algorithms, many expensive function evaluations (FEs) are required. To alleviate this difficulty, surrogate-assisted evolutionary algorithms (SAEAs) have attracted increasingly more attention in both academia and industry. Most existing SAEAs either waste computational resources due to the lack of accuracy of the surrogate model or easily fall into the local optimum as the dimension increases. To address these problems, this paper proposes an adaptive surrogate-assisted particle swarm optimization algorithm. In the proposed algorithm, a surrogate model is adaptively selected from a single model and an ensemble model by comparing the best existing solution and the latest obtained solution. Additionally, a model output criterion based on the standard deviation is suggested to improve the stability and generalization ability of the ensemble model. To verify the performance of the proposed algorithm, 10 benchmark functions with different modalities from 10 to 50 dimensions are tested, and the results are compared with those of five state-of-the-art SAEAs. The experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm performs well for most benchmark functions within a limited number of FEs. In this paper, a hybrid sunflower-teaching learning-based optimization (SFO-TLBO) algorithm has been proposed, integrating two well-known algorithms, namely sunflower optimization, and teaching–learning-based optimization. The proposed hybrid SFO-TLBO algorithm has been incorporated based on the ratio of the fitness value of the search agent and the average fitness value of the population. The SFO has more tendency of global exploration but has a problem of slow convergence speed. On the other hand, the convergence of the TLBO algorithm is fast, but it may get stuck in local optima. In this work, we have hybridized SFO with TLBO to take advantage of both the algorithms and also to balance the trade-off between exploitation and exploration. The proposed hybrid SFO-TLBO has been first applied to nineteen test benchmark functions. The outcomes have been compared with twelve state-of-the-art algorithms. In seventeen benchmark test functions, better performance has been achieved by the proposed hybrid SFO-TLBO. Also, the proposed hybrid SFO-TLBO algorithm has been used to solve an Internet of Vehicles (IoV) optimization problem and performance has been compared with fifteen state-of-the-art algorithms. In solving the IoV problem, hybrid SFO-TLBO has been achieved better performance in comparison with all fifteen considered algorithms which showcases the applicability of hybrid SFO-TLBO algorithm in resolving large-scale, real-world problems. In addition, for feature selection problems, a binary version of hybrid SFO-TLBO has been proposed, in which a wrapper approach is used to decide an optimal subset of features with a k-nearest neighbor classifier. The proposed binary method also determines an optimal value of k for the k-nearest neighbor classifier. The binary hybrid SFO-TLBO algorithm has been applied to the QSAR biodegradation dataset for classification, and for evidencing its efficiency, its performance has been compared with the other state-of-the-art algorithms. Balancing the convergence and the diversity is one of the crucial researches in solving multi-objective problems (MOPs). However, the optimization algorithms are inefficient and require massive iterations. The convergence accuracy and the distribution of the obtained non-dominated solutions are defective in solving complex MOPs. To solve these problems, a novel adaptive multi-objective particle swarm optimization using a three-stage strategy (tssAMOPSO) is proposed in this paper. Firstly, an adaptive flight parameter adjustment is proposed to manage the states of the algorithm, switching between the global exploration and the local exploitation. Then, the three-stage strategy, including adaptive optimization, decomposition, and Gaussian attenuation mutation, is conducted by population in each iteration. The three-stage strategy remarkably promotes the diversity and efficiency of the optimization process. Furthermore, the convergence analysis of three-stage strategy is provided in detail. Finally, particles are equipped with memory interval to improve the reliability of personal best selection. In the maintenance of external archive, the proposed fusion index can enhance the quality of non-dominated solutions directly. A series of benchmark instances, ZDT and DTLZ test suits, are used to verify the performance of tssAMOPSO. Several classical and state-of-the-art algorithms are employed for experimental comparisons. Recently, the slime mould algorithm (SMA) has become popular in function optimization, because it effectively uses exploration and exploitation to reach an optimal solution or near-optimal solution. However, the SMA uses two random search agents from the whole population to decide the future displacement and direction from the best search agents, which limits its exploitation and exploration. To solve this problem, we investigate an adaptive approach to decide whether opposition-based learning (OBL) will be used or not. Sometimes, the OBL is used to further increase the exploration. In addition, it maximizes the exploitation by replacing one random search agent with the best one in the position updating. The suggested technique is called an adaptive opposition slime mould algorithm (AOSMA). The qualitative and quantitative analysis of AOSMA is reported using 29 test functions that consisting of 23 classical test functions and 6 recently used composition functions from the IEEE CEC 2014 test suite. The results are compared with state-of-the-art optimization methods. Results presented in this paper show that AOSMA's performance is better than other optimization algorithms. The AOSMA is evaluated using Wilcoxon's rank-sum test. It also ranked one in Friedman's mean rank test. As a relatively new model, the artificial bee colony algorithm (ABC) has shown impressive success in solving optimization problems. Nevertheless, its efficiency is still not satisfactory for some complex optimization problems. This paper has modified ABC and its other recent variants to improve its performance by modifying the scout phase. This modification enhances its exploitation ability by intensifying the regions in the search space, which probably includes reasonable solutions. The experiments were performed on CEC2014, and CEC2015 benchmark suites, real-life problems. And the proposed modification was applied to basic ABC, Gbest-Guided ABC, Depth First Search ABC, and Teaching–Learning Based ABC, and they were compared with their modified counterparts. The results have shown that our modification can successfully increase the performance of the original versions. This paper develops a new algorithm by applying the Bayesian method to software using artificial immune systems. An artificial immune system is an adaptive computing system that uses models, principles, mechanisms, and functions used to solve problems in theoretical immunology. Its application to various fields of science is studied. The role that artificial immune systems play in software is invaluable. Methods for detecting malware are explored. Some works in the field of artificial immune system are analyzed and issues to be addressed are identified. The Bayesian method accurately calculates the probability of occurrence of any event under certain conditions. Therefore, the Bayesian method is applied to software using artificial immune systems. By applying this method, fast software performance can be achieved. For this, a new algorithm is developed and experiments are conducted. The developed algorithm is one of the new ones. Some existing feature subset selection algorithms use only one metric, such as symmetric uncertainty, to evaluate redundant features. These algorithms have the problem that some relevant features are considered as redundant and removed. To solve the problem, this paper proposes a feature subset selection algorithm based on equal interval division and three-way interaction information. Symmetric uncertainty between each feature and the class label is first calculated and compared with zero, and irrelevant features are removed. Then, symmetric uncertainty between features is calculated and compared with symmetric uncertainty between features and the class label. The method of equal interval division and ranking is adopted to process symmetric uncertainty between features and the class label as well as symmetric uncertainty between features, and these processed parts are then compared. Three-way interaction information among features and the class label is calculated and compared with zero. The three results of the comparisons are employed to remove redundant features. To validate the performance, the proposed algorithm is compared with several feature subset selection algorithms. The problem of identifying the top-k influential node is still an open and deeply felt issue. The development of a stable and efficient algorithm to deal with such identification is still a challenging research hot spot. Although conventional centrality-based and greedy-based methods show high performance, they are not very efficient when dealing with large-scale social networks. Recently, algorithms based on swarm intelligence are applied to solve the problems mentioned above, and the existing researches show that such algorithms can obtain the optimal global solution. In particular, the discrete bat algorithm (DBA) has been proved to have excellent performance, but the evolution mechanism based on a random selection strategy leads to the optimal solution's instability. To solve this problem, in this paper, we propose a clique-DBA algorithm. The proposed algorithm is based on the clique partition of a network and enhances the initial DBA algorithm's stability. The experimental results show that the proposed clique-DBA algorithm converges to a determined local influence estimation (LIE) value in each run, eliminating the phenomenon of large fluctuation of LIE fitness value generated by the original DBA algorithm. Finally, the simulated results achieved under the independent cascade model show that the clique-DBA algorithm has a comparable performance of influence spreading compared with the algorithms proposed in the state of the art. Multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs) have been successfully employed to solve many scientific and engineering problems. However, many algorithms perform ill in maintaining diversity and convergence simultaneously. In this paper, we devised a novel operator selection framework based on two collaborative indicators, generational distance (GD) and maximum spread (MS) to improve the diversity while maintaining a good convergence. By calculating the variation of GDs and MSs over the past 7 iterations, an instruction is conveyed to select a proper operator to execute next 7 iterations. This process is repeated until it reaches the maximum iteration. Two operators are embedded in this algorithm which are differential evolution operator (DE/rand/1) and our proposed crow search operator which is deemed to be efficient in explorating the search space. MOEA/D is utilized as the basis framework of our proposed algorithm. Experiments indicate that our proposed algorithm is valid and outperforms other famous algorithms in terms of diversity and convergence. Monarch butterfly optimization (MBO), which is a simple and widely used algorithm, has some limitations, such as utilizing the obtained experiential knowledge about the search space inefficiently, the lack of exploration, and being rotational variance. This paper proposes a new variation of MBO, which is called knowledge-based MBO (KMBO), to address these limitations. KMBO is proposed by introducing new operators that are linearized and can utilize the population's experimental knowledge. Furthermore, KMBO adopts the re-initialization operator to enhance the exploration ability and increase the diversity of the population. To verify KMBO's performance, it is tested on 23 well-known optimization benchmark functions and compared with MBO and five other state-of-the-art evolutionary algorithms. Experimental results confirm the superior performance of our proposed algorithm compared with MBO in terms of solution accuracy and convergence speed. Also, results demonstrate that KMBO performs better than or provides competitive performance with the other six algorithms. The qualities of new data used in the sequential learning phase of the online sequential extreme learning machine algorithm (OS-ELM) have a significant impact on the performance of OS-ELM. This paper proposes a novel data filter mechanism for OS-ELM from the perspective of fuzziness and a fuzziness-based online sequential extreme learning machine algorithm (FOS-ELM). In FOS-ELM, when new data arrive, a fuzzy classifier first picks out the meaningful data according to the fuzziness of each sample. Specifically, the new samples with high-output fuzziness are selected and then used in sequential learning. The experimental results on eight binary classification problems and three multiclass classification problems have shown that FOS-ELM updated by the new samples with high-output fuzziness has better generalization performance than OS-ELM. Since the unimportant data are discarded before sequential learning, FOS-ELM can save more memory and have higher computational efficiency. In addition, FOS-ELM can handle data one-by-one or chunk-by-chunk with fixed or varying sizes. The relationship between the fuzziness of new samples and the model performance is also studied in this paper, which is expected to provide some useful guidelines for improving the generalization ability of online sequential learning algorithms. This paper proposes a novel distributed differential evolution framework called distributed mixed variants (dynamic) differential evolution ( $$dmvD^{2}E)$$ . This novel framework is a heterogeneous mix of effective differential evolution ( DE) and dynamic differential evolution ( DDE) variants with diverse characteristics in a distributed framework to result in $$dmvD^{2}E$$ . The $$dmvD^{2}E$$ , discussed in this paper, constitute various proportions and combinations of DE/best/2/bin and DDE/best/2/bin as subpopulations with each variant evolving independently but also exchanging information amongst others to co-operatively enhance the efficacy of $$dmvD^{2}E$$ as whole. The $$dmvD^{2}E$$ variants have been run on 14 test problems of 30 dimensions to display their competitive performance over the distributed classical and dynamic versions of the constituent variants. The $$dmvD^{2}E$$ , when benchmarked on a different 13 test problems of 500 as well as 1,000 dimensions, scaled well and outperformed, on an average, five existing distributed differential evolution algorithms. Learning from categorical data is a critical yet challenging task. Current research focuses on either leveraging the complex interaction between and within categorical values to generate a numerical representation, or designing a model that can tackle this types of data directly. However, both of these paradigms overlook the relation between the data characteristics and learning model hypothesis. In this paper, we propose a model-aware categorical data embedding framework that jointly reveals the intrinsic categorical data characteristics and optimizes the fitness of the representation for the follow-up learning model. An ELM-aware and a SVM-aware representation methods have been instantiated under this framework. Extensive experiments of classification with the embedded representation on 17 data sets demonstrate that the proposed framework can significantly improve the categorical data representation performance compared with state-of-the-art competitors. The fuzzy user equilibrium problem in urban traffic assignment has attracted much attention since its great theoretical significance and wide application. Based on the fact that travelers tend to choose the minimum-cost path between every origin-destination pair of the traffic network, an equilibrium is emerging over time. However, in the real world, travelers’ selection of paths is often fuzzy with the lack of global information. In this paper, by aid of the Physarum polycephalum algorithm, we propose a model for solving the fuzzy user equilibrium problem. P. polycephalum can build a bio-network and assign the flow according to the location and the size of the food source. Taking full advantage of this feature, the proposed model associates the traffic demand with the food source and unifies the bio-network and the traffic network. The solution of the fuzzy user equilibrium problem is the flow assignment in the bio-network. To test the performance of the proposed method, we conduct experiments on some traffic networks selected from recent related works. The results show that the proposed method is efficient. Abstract Case-based reasoning (CBR) is an effective and fast problem-solving methodology, which solves new problems by remembering and adaptation of past cases. With the increasing requests for useful references for all kinds of problems and from different locations, keeping a single CBR system seems to be outdated and not practical. Multi-CBR agents located in different places are of great support to fast meet these requests. In this paper, the architecture of a multi-CBR agent system is proposed, where each CBR agent locates at different places, and is assumed to have the same ability to deal with new problem independently. When requests in a request queue are coming one by one from different places, we propose a new policy of agent dispatching to satisfy the request queue. Throughout the paper, we assume that the system must solve the coming request by considering only past requests. In this context, the performance of traditional greedy algorithms is not satisfactory. We apply a new but simple approach – competitive algorithm for on-line problem (called ODAL) to determine the dispatching policy to keep comparative low cost. The corresponding on-line dispatching algorithm is proposed and the competitive ratio is given. Based on the competitive algorithm, the dispatching of multi-CBR agents is optimized. As a symbolic approach for computing with words, linguistic truth-valued lattice-valued propositional logic $$\fancyscript{L}_{V(n\times 2)}P(X)$$ can represent and handle both imprecise and incomparable linguistic value-based information. Indecomposable extremely simple form (IESF) is a basic concept of $$\alpha $$ -resolution automated reasoning in lattice-valued logic based in lattice implication algebra (LIA). In this paper we establish a unified method for finding the structure of $$k$$ -IESF in $$\fancyscript{L}_{V(n\times 2)}P(X)$$ . Firstly, some operational properties of logical formulae in $$L_6P(X)$$ are studied, and some rules are obtained for judging whether a given logical formula is a $$k$$ -IESF, which are used to contrive an algorithm for finding $$k$$ -IESF in $$L_6P(X)$$ . Then, all the results are extended into $$\fancyscript{L}_{V(n\times 2)}P(X)$$ . Finally, a unified algorithm for finding all $$k$$ -IESFs in $$\fancyscript{L}_{V(n\times 2)}P(X)$$ is proposed. The aim of this paper is to give an uncertainty distribution of the least cost of shipment of a commodity through a network with uncertain capacities. Uncertainty theory is used to deal with uncertain capacities, and an $$\alpha $$ -minimum cost flow problem model is proposed. After defining the $$\alpha $$ -minimum cost flow, the properties of the model are analyzed, and then an algorithm for uncertain minimum cost flow problem is developed. Coupling sensors in a sensor network with mobility mechanism can boost the performance of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). In this paper, we address the problem of self-deploying mobile sensors to reach high coverage. The problem is modeled as a multi-objective optimization that simultaneously minimizes two contradictory parameters; the total sensor moving distance and the total uncovered area. In order to resolve the aforementioned deployment problem, this study investigates the use of biologically inspired mechanisms, including evolutionary algorithms and swarm intelligence, with their state-of-the-art algorithms. Unlike most of the existing works, the coverage parameter is expressed as a probabilistic inference model due to uncertainty in sensor readings. To the best of our knowledge, probabilistic coverage of mobile sensor networks has not been addressed in the context of multi-objective bio-inspired algorithms. Performance evaluations on deployment quality and deployment cost are measured and analyzed through extensive simulations, showing the effectiveness of each algorithm under the developed objective functions. Simulations reveal that only one multi-objective evolutionary algorithm; the so-called multi-objective evolutionary algorithm with decomposition survives to effectively tackle the probabilistic coverage deployment problem. It gathers more than 78 % signals from all of the targets (and in some cases reaches 100 % certainty). On the other hand, non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II, multi-objective particle swarm optimization, and non-dominated sorting particle swarm optimization show inferior performance down to 16-32 %, necessitating further modifications in their internal mechanisms. This paper introduces an electromagnetism-like (EM) approach for solving the problem of parameter tuning in the support vector machine (SVM). The proposed method is used to tune binary SVM classifiers in single and multiple kernel mode. The internal kernel structure is based on linear and radial basis functions (RBF). An appropriate encoding scheme of EM enables easy transformation of real-valued EM points directly to real-valued parameter combinations. Estimations of the generalization error based on the cross-validation and validation set error are used as objective functions. The efficient local search procedure uses variable size interval movement in order to improve the convergence of the method. The quality of the proposed method is tested on four collections of testing benchmarks through five separate experiments. The first three collections consist of small-size to medium-size classification data sets with up to 60 features and 1,300 training vectors, while the fourth collection is formed of large heterogeneous data sets with up to 1,554 features and 2,186 training vectors. The obtained results indicate that EM outperforms the comparison algorithms in 10 out of 13 instances from the first collection, 5 out of 5 instances from the second, and 13 out of 15 instances from the third collection. The last two experiments, conducted on the fourth collection, show that the proposed method outperforms 14 successful methods in 3 out of 5 data sets where RBF multiple kernel learning is used, and behaves competitively in cases when linear kernels are used.
