This article presents information about three books. They are, "The Days That We Have Seen," by George Ewart Evans, "Village Life and Labour," edited by Raphael Samuel, and "Life and Labour: Work in a Maturing Industrial Society," by Peter H. Stearns. These three books are, in alphabetical order by author, a potboiler, a seminal work, and a book that one could well have done without. The book. "Village Life and Labour really" doesn't need yet another good review. Few books in recent years have had such uniformly laudatory notices. It is the first book to come out of the History Workshop at Ruskin College, Oxford and is intended to be part of a twelve volume series `loosely organized around the theme of "Family, Work and Home". One must hope that Samuel and his co-workers will be more fortunate than some other Routledge authors who have found this publisher taking a cavalier attitude to contractual obligations; for "Village Life and Labour" is an exciting and important book. It whets the appetite for later volumes. The book has five chapters. The first two are by Raphael Samuel: a general introduction to the whole series and a rather brief conspectus of village labour in the nineteenth century. Two longer pieces follow. One is by David H. Morgan on harvesting and the second is a study of country work girls by Jennie Kitteringham.
