At the same time, workers' collective organizations were greatly weakened in many countries, conglomerate firms were dismantled and the state was expected to reduce its redistributive functions and focus instead on providing a regulatory framework in which markets would do the work of coordinating the economy. While sociologists dealing with the economy during the post-war period did so primarily from an organizational and a (Marxist) political economy perspective, the shift from the state and conglomerate firms to globalized markets opened up new research topics around market operations. The modern study of economic inequality is based on the distribution of entitlements over goods and services. But social commentators at least since Rousseau have been concerned with a different aspect of economic inequality: that it implies that one person is entitled to command another person for their own personal ends. I call this inequality as entitlements over labor. I propose to measure entitlements over labor by calculating the extent to which top income groups can afford to buy the labor of others for the purpose of their personal consumption. Unlike standard inequality measures, this measure is not welfarist, but instead has its normative basis in relations of domination, hierarchy and social status between people. I estimate entitlements over labor in three high-inequality and two low-inequality countries and argue that inequality as entitlements over labor is socially and politically salient, capturing a side of inequality neglected by standard measures. Our study seeks to put the assumptions of German Stability Culture to the test. The concept is a core legitimizing element of economic policy discourse in Germany and used regularly to juxtapose Germany and northern Europe and the euro area periphery. Using Eurobarometer surveys we construct a measurement for Stability Culture which is based on the priority assigned to the fight against inflation. Our empirical analysis covers the 2002-2010 timespan and includes 27 European Union Member States. Our results show that the distinction between northern states with an allegedly strong and southern states with an allegedly weak Stability Culture is a myth. Controlling for actual inflation, we find that the northern Member States with an allegedly high Stability Culture are less concerned with price stability than the rest of the EU. The article presents a presidential address by Michael J. Piore, delivered at the Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics (SASE) Annual Meeting 2008 in San José, Costa Rica, in which he discussed the relationship between sociology and economics, and the role that this relationship plays at the current political juncture in the transition from neoliberalism to the formation of public policy.

The article presents a review of the article "Transforming Socio-economics With a New Epistemology," by Rogers Hollingsworth and Karl H. Müller. It mentions that Hollingsworth and Müller expressed their discontentment with the socio-economical state in the community. However, they examine a paradigm that will exceed the partition of natural and social science. According to the author, the proposition of the Hollingsworth and Müller on developing socio-ecomics is possible and well timed. Moreover, he evaluates other ways to transform the community to modern economics.

This paper argues that a new scientific framework (Science II) has been slowly emerging, rivaling the Descartes-Newtonian perspective (Science I) dominant for several hundred years. The Science II framework places a great deal of emphasis on evolution, dynamism, chance and/or pattern recognition. As both cause and effect of the new perspective, scholars in the physical, biological and social sciences are increasingly addressing common problems, borrowing insights from and interacting with each other. The epistemology of Science II has enormous potential for understanding problems of fundamental interest to socio-economists. The paper focuses on five useful concepts in the framework of Science II: self-organizing processes, complex networks, power-law distributions, the general binding problem and multi-level analysis. This paper inquires into the recent changes of accounting regulation in Germany. To track these changes systematically, we develop a general framework for comparing accounting regimes. Within this framework, we find privatization tendencies in accounting governance which go along with international convergence. A closer analysis also shows that the observable privatization processes do not imply a retreat of the state. Quite the contrary, the public sector has increased its interventions-albeit partly on a supranational level. Many reforms do not originate from 'exogenous' European legislation and are due to developments in the systemic accounting environment. Looking at the socio-economic context of financial reporting, we identify and discuss possible driving forces such as demographic developments, fraudulent conduct of reporting entities or the globalization of capital markets, which are the intrinsic forces causing the functional convergence towards a new system of accountancy. In this paper I outline the theory of institutional economics developed by John R. Commons and contrast it with neoclassical economic theory. Key concepts in Commons' theory are bounded rationality, property rights, working rules, institutions, transactions and incomplete contracts. Although Commons' writings tend toward the obscure and descriptive, I demonstrate that on a deeper level of analysis his ideas and concepts provide the basis for an alternative body of economic theory. In certain respects, this body of theory complements neoclassical theory by fleshing-out the institutional infrastructure that governs and regulates market exchange. In other respects, however, Commons' theory of institutional economics is a heterodox substitute for neoclassical theory because it is built using a different methodology, replaces or modifies central theoretical pillars of neoclassical theory, and denies the validity of the `Invisible Hand' theorem and other core neoclassical propositions. Commons' institutional economics also provides a theoretical framework for an integration of the economic and social dimensions of human behaviour. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This year, 2008, is the twentieth anniversary of the first appearance of Amitai Etzioni's The Moral Dimension: Towards a New Economics (New York: The Free Press, 1988). The book was a major foundational text behind the inauguration of SASE, the Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics, from which Socio-Economic Review originated. The editors have asked four scholars working on the relationship between economy and society to assess the book's continuing importance.
