The International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) is a unique identifier most often associated with popular magazines, scholarly journals, and newspapers. The scope of ISSN, however, includes many types of grey literature. This article will discuss and provide examples of the types of grey literature in scope for ISSN and describe the bibliographic metadata about these resources created to support each ISSN assignment. Benefits to the originators of grey literature that result from ISSN assignments are highlighted, especially the valuable exposure that the resources gain from the bibliographic records that are created to document ISSN assignments and are included in multiple international databases. As more libraries rely on remote storage facilities to preserve print collections, this presents challenges for resource discovery and access. Since off-site storage facilities often have no open shelves or public access, increased importance is placed on metadata to connect users to resources. At the University of Toronto Libraries (UTL), we conducted a metadata assessment of the serials collection located in its Downsview high-density storage facility. Using quantitative and qualitative methods based on the assessment metrics proposed by Bruce and Hillmann (2004) we gained a holistic view of the quality and effectiveness of the metadata for the Downsview serials collection. The world of e-book records can be quite divergent, depending on the source of those records. Record content and quality can vary greatly. An engaging session about Metadata 2020 at the 2017 NASIG Annual Conference led the authors to wonder: is there a way to assess how libraries, publishers, and vendors are currently operating in this space for e-book records? This article will provide comparative data from two libraries and include a publisher's workflows and perspective on the subject. "The Future of Libraries Is Open" (FOLIO) is a community-driven effort to develop an open source library services platform. This article introduces the FOLIO community, provides background on the University of Chicago's involvement with the project, and discusses application development with an emphasis on key infrastructure features that will make FOLIO flexible enough to accommodate the uncertain future of cataloging. The article also provides insight into how the Metadata Management (MM) Special Interest Group (SIG), the FOLIO special interest group charged with defining essential bibliographic and holdings management functions, addresses current and emerging requirements in developing the infrastructure and data model to support MARC, BIBFRAME, and linked data. On Thursday, June 7, as part of the NASIG 2018 preconferences, Terry Reese led a day-long workshop entitled "The Now and Future MarcEdit: A Day-Long Workshop." MarcEdit, a metadata editing utility, was originally designed and created by Reese in 1999 at Oregon State University. The workshop focused on the enhancements and other changes made to the program by the MarcEdit 7 update, released at the end of 2017. The workshop also provided an overview of the basic functionalities of MarcEdit, using examples provided by Reese coupled with questions from audience members. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Terry Reese taught two pre-conference workshops on MarcEdit at the NASIG 32nd Annual Conference: a full day session titled “A Beginner’s Guide to MarcEdit” and a half day session titled “Beyond the Editor: Advanced Tools and Techniques for Working with Metadata.” Attendees were given slides and sample files so that they could follow along or work through the exercises later at their own speed. The first day covered everything from installation and settings, to how to work with vendor records, and direct integration with library systems. This article provides a basic overview of the main types of standards used in cataloging, and outlines some of the upcoming changes to those standards that may dramatically affect cataloging practices and policies. Affected standards include Resource Description and Access, which will be updated to conform to a new data model, and the ubiquitous machine-readable cataloging format (MARC 21), which is intended to be replaced by a newly developed linked data ontology, the Bibliographic Framework Initiative. Out of the many Linked Data vocabularies available for use, several have emerged in the past few years as candidates for the description of continuing resources. Bibliographic Framework Transition Initiative (BIBFRAME) 2.0, PRESSoo, Resource Description and Access Registry, and Schema.org all contain classes and properties designed for the application of Linked Data for serials, but are not necessarily alike in their conceptual frameworks or completeness. This article examines possible alignments between elements most likely to be employed for describing serials, as well as how such alignments might remedy previously identified issues with certain vocabularies and aid discovery. Web-scale discovery services are powerful tools for facilitating access to an institution’s online holdings at the article level. However, the functionality of any given results link in a web-scale discovery search is dependent on multiple factors that are not always apparent to end users. The complexity involved in the troubleshooting process led the University of North Texas Libraries to embed a broken link report button in its search results and build a new troubleshooting workflow around this feature. The article presents information on international serials and electronic resource management which includes library schools, continuing education and library-orientated organizations. The article also discusses the awards and grants given by EBSCO Information Services and the recommendations provided by the National Information Standards Organization (NISO).

This article is a preliminary report on the work of the Canadian Linked Data Initiative (CLDI), a collaboration between five of Canada’s largest research libraries, Library and Archives Canada, Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec, and Canadiana.org. Although still in its nascent stage, participating institutions are working together to advance the technical services divisions of our libraries in the area of linked data. Project working groups are making progress in five main areas: grant funding, digital collections, education and training, legacy metadata enhancement, and in the evaluation and adaptation of Bibliographic Framework Transition Initiative tools. By working across geographic and institutional boundaries, the CLDI aims to chart a path to a new age of technical services, one based on the foundation of Linked Open Data. Implementing discovery tools and getting them to work with existing library services often leaves very little time for their promotion and for the thoughtful, ongoing evaluation and curation of their content. However, the expectations and experiences that users have about discovery tools are often directly related to the content and the way that content is described. In our efforts to work with vendors to resolve the underlying business issues that prevent us from having all of the metadata for our resources included in our discovery tools, we may have lost sight of our role in curating and evaluating the usefulness of the content that is already included in them. E-books play an important role in library collections; however, the sheer number of books and the nature of access models, such as limited simultaneous use, create some significant challenges for their discovery and access. For this column we asked Nettie Lagace from the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) to tell us about some of the work NISO has been doing in this area and highlight some of the initiatives designed to provide more interoperability among parties in the e-book supply chain. Nothing can function well without standards and best practices, including the information world. The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) works with the information community to develop standards and best practices to improve interoperability and workflow efficiency in a wide range of areas from metadata transfer to information retrieval. To ensure a community consensus, NISO brings every interested party into the process of developing standards and best practices through working groups. Current work and updates from two NISO-sponsored working groups, Open Discovery Initiative and Presentation and Identification of E-Journals, were covered in this presentation. The article provides information from various aspects of the field of international serials and electronic resource management. Abstracts for several research articles are included on topics such as scholarly electronic books (e-books) and open source data in academic publishing. Additionally, awards and grants presented by the American Library Association (ALA) in 2011 are highlighted along with notes on the reorganization of the United Kingdom Serials Group (UKSG). Brief information regarding the 2012 conference for the UKSG and a list of online resources related to serials librarians are also included.

In this session two veterans of the international information standards community discussed the National Information Standards Organization's (NISO's) soon to be released Institutional Identifiers, or 'I2' standard. When adopted and implemented the I2 standard will create a standard unique identifier for each institution, one that can be used by publishers, agents, and online hosts. Once adopted, use of the standard bodes well for improving processes in managing electronic resources, particularly access and activation issues, throughout the information supply chain. Many libraries, academic institutions, governmental agencies, non-profit and for-profit agencies, and other groups around the world have implemented institutional repositories (IR) in the past few years. Folksonomies are systems of collaborative end-user metadata of digital assets. This paper explores how folksonomies could be used in public library catalogs to enable end users to (1) organize personal information spaces, (2) supplement existing controlled vocabularies, and (3) create online communities of interest. The benefits and shortcomings of folksonomies are discussed, as well as customizable features in existing library catalog systems. A research agenda for the study of folksonomies is presented that focuses on a quantitative and qualitative analysis of folksonomies, as well the study of end users' metatagging behaviours. In September 2005, Library and Archives Canada hosted a two-and-a-half-day event, the Canadian Metadata Forum. The theme, "Metadata-A Reality Check" was addressed by over twenty speakers and panelists before an audience of experts in information resource description and management for the Web across many information domains (libraries, archives and museums) and in a variety of formats (text, data sets and multimedia). The goal of the program was to increase understanding of the information discovery challenges posed by the World Wide Web and the benefits of improving alignment of descriptive standards across the domains to improve information sharing.
