A need to manage and preserve indigenous knowledge is widely recognised. This is because it is understood to have the potential to promote sustainable development while also preserving indigenous peoples' rights, interests, and cultural identity. To understand the challenges of preserving and integrating digitized indigenous knowledge into open science platforms, a qualitative study was carried out. The study's theoretical underpinnings were based on the ideas that data must be discoverable, accessible, interoperable, and usable (FAIR) and that indigenous people have the power to control their data and the duty to disclose how it is used to advance and defend their rights and general well-being (CARE). The data were analysed thematically. The results demonstrate that indigenous knowledge is stored in separate databases at institutions in various countries. Additionally, there was no standardization in the organizations that were collecting the metadata. Because of a lack of metadata, the digital divide, and poor digital and indigenous librarian abilities, indigenous knowledge and data were practically inaccessible and unfindable. In the aftermath of the digital revolution and open research, this article brings a new viewpoint to the conversation about maintaining indigenous knowledge in sub-Saharan Africa. Institutions that house Indigenous oral histories are often ignorant to the harm they perpetuate by treating these materials without rooting curatorial considerations in Indigenous approaches to knowledge. Issues of categorization, attribution, and access, among many others, often go unaddressed, causing serious harm to Indigenous peoples and their cultural resources. It is imperative that Western archives, libraries, and museums seek out alternatives to systems that perpetuate settler-colonialism, and work to place control of oral histories back in Indigenous hands. In this paper we present several considerations for working with Indigenous oral histories in Western archives, provide case studies that promote the ethical curation and sharing of Indigenous materials, and close with an overview of our current work to revitalize and redress a large collection of Native American oral histories presently housed at the University of Florida. In July 2020, The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) Libraries began work towards building a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive organization. One of the ways in which the organization set out to achieve this goal is through the digitization of materials by and about underrepresented and diverse peoples as well as the accurate representation of these individuals and groups in our metadata. This paper describes how the UTA Libraries' Committee for Metadata and Digitization approached this charge through the creation of three subgroups. There is discussion of the committee's goals and processes, an evaluation of progress toward meeting objectives, plans for sustaining this work, and a list of proposed strategies for other institutions interested in implementing similar efforts. The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) recently revised the Open Discovery Initiative Recommended Practice (), which outlines best practices for discovery service providers. It streamlines the process by which libraries, content providers, and discovery service providers work together; defines models for "fair" linking; and suggests usage statistics that should be collected for libraries and for content providers. The recommendations in this document, created by members of the Open Discovery Initiative Standing Committee, enable libraries, discovery service providers, and content providers to work together to the full extent of their abilities – thus providing an effective and rich experience to end users. As libraries commit to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) initiatives, it is critical to measure the strengths and weaknesses of collections in response. Building off already established approaches of collection diversity audits, the author argues that it is possible to use MARC metadata to perform exploratory analyses at a large scale. This paper discusses the process of planning, preparing the data, and performing an analysis, following the trajectory of an analysis of the 2.8 million geographic subject headings present in the University of Toronto Libraries' MARC records. Knowledge Bases and Related Tools (KBART) is one of the most successful National Information Standards Organization (NISO) recommended practices. Formally supported by over eighty organizations across all stakeholder groups, it enables a standardized transfer of data between content providers and knowledgebases. The KBART Standing Committee has begun work on Phase III of KBART, which was last updated in 2014. In this NASIG 2021 session, three members of the KBART Standing Committee provided an overview of plans around Phase III of KBART, reviewing progress to date and highlighting efforts to resolve issues around KBART files for which there are no easy answers, such as the challenges of supporting additional content types beyond serials and monographs, how best to handle gap coverage for serials, and how to communicate Open Access content. The audience was asked to provide input on their use of KBART files, how they would like to use KBART that is not possible today, their thoughts on support for additional content types, and their opinions on proposed changes to KBART around the treatment of gap coverage and the handling of Open Access content. When trying to manage their e-resources, librarians spend a significant amount of time adjusting their holdings in vendor knowledgebases to make sure that the content their library can access is selected properly. This is often a tedious process, which, extrapolated out to each content provider, can be a drain on library resources. A National Information Standards Organization (NISO) recommended practice provides a solution to this problem by facilitating the automatic transfer and retrieval of library-specific Knowledge Bases and Related Tools (KBART) holdings data between content providers and knowledgebases. In this presentation, Matthew Ragucci of Wiley presents a publisher's perspective on the work required to implement KBART Automation: Automated Retrieval of Customer Electronic Holdings, Andrée Rathemacher of the University of Rhode Island shares a librarian's opinion on the benefits and potential pitfalls of KBART Automation, and Stephanie Doellinger of OCLC addresses the topic from a knowledgebase supplier's point of view. Duke University Libraries implemented several FOLIO applications in July 2020 to manage electronic resource licenses. In this presentation, Abigail Wickes, Julie Brannon, and Virginia Martin describe pre-implementation work, the implementation process, and the opportunities and challenges the library has experienced using FOLIO as an electronic resource management system. This presentation illustrated a proactive approach carried out by the Electronic Resources Management (ERM) team at the Arizona State University (ASU) Library, which resulted in a reduction in the volume of tickets from users. The discussion included details about the systematic process of handling various e-resource projects carried out by the team, challenges encountered, and recommendations to assist institutions in providing uninterrupted access of e-resources to their library users. This article is a case study of privacy considerations in the adoption of a Research Information Management (RIM) System. RIM Systems collect, store, and link together metadata for research, service, grants, and teaching activities. Sometimes called Current Research Information Systems (CRIS) or Faculty Activity Reporting (FAR), these systems enable institutions to collect data from different internal systems and combine it with external information, providing a more holistic perspective on university activity. They provide a single, authoritative source of this data and allow for multiple stakeholders (i.e. faculty, administration, IT, HR, library, communications) to query, analyze, download, visualize, and share it. Oklahoma State University (OSU) recently adopted a RIM System, which is being implemented and supported by the OSU Libraries. A defining factor in the decision making process for product selection was how each system addressed issues around privacy. This case study will review some of the central data privacy considerations at play in the adoption of RIM Systems at both the institutional and individual level. This will include data sharing, ownership, retention, right to reuse data, data deletion obligations upon contract termination, user access to privacy policies, and user data controls. Questions to ask before adoption, key institutional players in discussions of privacy, and issues that may arise after adoption of a Research Information Management System will also be addressed. The open access journal Communications in Information Literacy (CIL) began publication in 2007. After ten years of continuous growth, CIL migrated from Online Journals Systems (OJS) and a commercial web host to Portland State's Digital Commons (bepress) publishing platform, PDXScholar. The presenters provide brief overviews of CIL and PDXScholar, and they detail the challenges and ultimate successes of this multi-institutional model for advancing open access journals and reclaiming control of the scholarly record. They highlight the content migration process from OJS to PDXScholar, post-migration actions to correct metadata, the introduction of functioning DOIs, and coordinating with both free web and commercial indexers to ensure proper access to the newly moved journal. The presenters also discuss the practicalities and the policy implications of this move, particularly in light of Elsevier's acquisition of bepress. The International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) is a unique identifier most often associated with popular magazines, scholarly journals, and newspapers. The scope of ISSN, however, includes many types of grey literature. This article will discuss and provide examples of the types of grey literature in scope for ISSN and describe the bibliographic metadata about these resources created to support each ISSN assignment. Benefits to the originators of grey literature that result from ISSN assignments are highlighted, especially the valuable exposure that the resources gain from the bibliographic records that are created to document ISSN assignments and are included in multiple international databases. Think tank grey literature can be used for teaching and research in policy-oriented courses, but because much of this content is scattered throughout the far reaches of cyberspace, students and many faculty may not know how to go about finding it. At the same time, think tanks need to find new and creative ways to push their content out and capture new audiences. This article will assess the value of aggregating grey literature on JSTOR for both researchers and think tanks, briefly touch upon the advantages of comprehensive searching on our platform, and then take a detailed look at how we make this content discoverable through the application of rich metadata. The E-Resources and Metadata team of the University of Guelph Library have recently been motivated by multiple factors to undertake a massive review and revision of their workflows and accompanying documentation. Presenting Open Access (OA) resources alongside licensed content provides many benefits to librarians, vendors, publishers, and library patrons. However, the tools and collection development practices designed to work with traditionally acquired materials often pose challenges for freely available resources. This paper will address managing open content library collections, and offer an assessment of current delivery models and opportunities for upgrading delivery in the future, including: How to integrate open content into collection development strategies; How to improve the data around open content; How MARC record changes will impact the way users find and access open content; and How library service providers are improving the OA user experience. This paper conveys valuable, up-to-date knowledge of today's OA landscape, and outlines best practices for integrating OA content into library collection development strategies. In a Vision session at the NASIG 35th annual meeting, Dr. Philip Schreur presented the advantages for libraries to move away from MARC and towards linked data at this time. He concentrated on four themes: the advantages of new communication technologies and the open Web; new approaches to authority work and workflows; increased social justice through broader access and multiple vocabularies in a wider range of results; and possible gains through human-centered artificial intelligence. As initiatives expand from the Library of Congress and new conversion products appear on our horizon, embracing the transition from MARC to linked data may be easier, and more necessary, than it currently appears for many libraries. As more libraries rely on remote storage facilities to preserve print collections, this presents challenges for resource discovery and access. Since off-site storage facilities often have no open shelves or public access, increased importance is placed on metadata to connect users to resources. At the University of Toronto Libraries (UTL), we conducted a metadata assessment of the serials collection located in its Downsview high-density storage facility. Using quantitative and qualitative methods based on the assessment metrics proposed by Bruce and Hillmann (2004) we gained a holistic view of the quality and effectiveness of the metadata for the Downsview serials collection. Academic libraries provide intellectual access (discovery and procurement) to the full text of electronic journal articles through traditional library technologies like discovery layers, link resolver software and knowledge bases. These technologies mainly rely on accurate title-level metadata to successfully deliver journal articles to library users. Open Access articles pose a difficulty for many participants in the e-journal supply chain, including libraries and publishers, as Open Access status is a property of the article, not the title. A review of the literature examines: the impact of Open Access on intellectual access through traditional library technologies, current proposed solutions, and emerging technologies. The world of e-book records can be quite divergent, depending on the source of those records. Record content and quality can vary greatly. An engaging session about Metadata 2020 at the 2017 NASIG Annual Conference led the authors to wonder: is there a way to assess how libraries, publishers, and vendors are currently operating in this space for e-book records? This article will provide comparative data from two libraries and include a publisher's workflows and perspective on the subject. "The Future of Libraries Is Open" (FOLIO) is a community-driven effort to develop an open source library services platform. This article introduces the FOLIO community, provides background on the University of Chicago's involvement with the project, and discusses application development with an emphasis on key infrastructure features that will make FOLIO flexible enough to accommodate the uncertain future of cataloging. The article also provides insight into how the Metadata Management (MM) Special Interest Group (SIG), the FOLIO special interest group charged with defining essential bibliographic and holdings management functions, addresses current and emerging requirements in developing the infrastructure and data model to support MARC, BIBFRAME, and linked data. In 2014, the University of Toronto's Faculty of Information (iSchool) and the University of Toronto Libraries (UTL) partnered in the development of the Toronto Academic Libraries Internship (TALint) program. Focused on workplace-integrated learning, the TALint program provides enhanced educational experiences for Masters of Information students by combining periods of in-class study with actual workplace experiences. With this year's TALint cohort in UTL's Metadata Technologies Unit, the NASIG Core Competencies for Electronic Resources Librarians was used as a framework for student training. In this session, we discuss the development of a comprehensive student training plan in electronic resource management, the key benefits of using the NASIG Core Competencies within the TALint program, student perceptions of competency-based training, and we outline future directions for the TALint program within the Metadata Technologies Unit. On Thursday, June 7, as part of the NASIG 2018 preconferences, Terry Reese led a day-long workshop entitled "The Now and Future MarcEdit: A Day-Long Workshop." MarcEdit, a metadata editing utility, was originally designed and created by Reese in 1999 at Oregon State University. The workshop focused on the enhancements and other changes made to the program by the MarcEdit 7 update, released at the end of 2017. The California State University system implemented Ex Libris's Alma and Primo as a consortium in 2017. Consortial management of electronic resources in these systems has offered significant benefits as well as surprises and difficulties. While Alma is able to support a consortium with multiple ways of acquiring and accessing electronic resources, the result is an architecture that is more complex than the setup for print resources. Similarly, Primo is able to manage the complexity of bibliographic records from twenty-three libraries as well as article-level discovery records, but its mechanisms for this may be counterintuitive at times. Established in 2005, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL)'s Libraries' institutional repository (IR) has approximately 99,500 unique items. It is one of the largest and most-used institutional repositories in the United States. This presentation explores how UNL is working to meet the challenge of consistently and accurately identifying individual researchers and their scholarly activities. It examines UNL's metadata practices for its IR, giving a more detailed explanation of personal names and Open Researcher and Contributor ID identifiers. It reviews some typical metadata problems found in UNL's IR. Finally, it explores priorities for metadata maintenance and what is sustainable and worthwhile. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While institutional repositories (IRs) often include a built-in search tool and/or are indexed by web search engines, some patrons go directly to the online library catalog with their information need. Rather than hope that users will stumble on the IR from the library website or assume that they will start their research with a Google search, librarians can enhance IR discoverability and usage by integrating its content into the library catalog. With strong teamwork, good communication, and a shared vision, this endeavor transforms the IR and library catalog from separate, siloed platforms into a more cohesive collections package. At the University of San Diego, librarians and administrators across three departments came together to share information and work in concert to explore the benefits of auto-harvesting IR content into the library catalog. Driven by a vision of enhancing discoverability and access, as well as promoting the IR and enriching the catalog, the team members worked cooperatively to identify specific IR collections appropriate for harvest, investigate technical logistics, consult outside vendors (including Innovative Interfaces, Inc./III and bepress), and experiment with implementation. International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard 3297 governs the assignment of International Standard Serial Numbers (ISSNs) for continuing resources worldwide. It is subject to systematic review every five years and, in 2017, an ISO Working Group was set up to review the standard. This working group took the decision to survey the views of stakeholders including publishers, libraries, and others. This article reports on the global survey that was undertaken, describing the questions and answers about which the committee sought opinions. It also sought details on the respondents to provide context. The replies are summarised in chart form with conclusions and an appraisal of the key issues, which suggest that whilst respondents are supportive of expanding the ways in which the ISSN is deployed, they are less convinced of the need for more ISSNs for any given title. They are split on the need for the structure of the ISSN to be revised but there is strong support for the notion of a "Family ISSN" that would describe resources that are linked through, for example, title changes or geography or language. Managing electronic serials is a vital part of modern academic librarianship. In 2014, the College of Staten Island (CSI) faced a serious serials access problem. A number of subscribed titles were temporarily not accessible through library interfaces. To quickly solve the problem, a set of over 5,000 custom records were uploaded (using Microsoft Excel) to Serials Solutions 360 Core, CSI's serial management system. This solution provided access to current and back-file (perpetual ownership) titles but introduced a number of significant new problems, including duplicate records, records with holdings dates that were invalid at the end of the calendar year, back-file records that were difficult to identify or edit, and unmanageable sets of records for large subscription packages. This article will describe how and why the custom records caused these issues and describe the project that addressed them. The project (ongoing) was designed to fix the problems while maintaining access to all current and back-file titles during the process. A variety of techniques were required. Vendor-provided knowledgebase records were examined, activated (or deactivated), and downloaded. The Overlap Analysis tool of 360 Core was employed to match knowledgebase and custom (local) records. The custom records were manipulated in Excel for examination, editing, and batch deletion. Excel formulas were used to compare the custom records with vendor knowledgebase records and Overlap Analysis results. Finally, extensive manual work was done to delete records, test access links, and find unmatched records. These techniques have been successful. The project also reaped other unexpected access improvements. Other libraries may apply these techniques and strategies to any serial data clean-up. Although journal management technology is rapidly changing, libraries will still need to be able to work with and manipulate data to provide access, understand and manage their holdings, and audit error-prone vendor data. Terry Reese taught two pre-conference workshops on MarcEdit at the NASIG 32nd Annual Conference: a full day session titled “A Beginner’s Guide to MarcEdit” and a half day session titled “Beyond the Editor: Advanced Tools and Techniques for Working with Metadata.” Attendees were given slides and sample files so that they could follow along or work through the exercises later at their own speed. The first day covered everything from installation and settings, to how to work with vendor records, and direct integration with library systems. This article reflects the discussion of metadata challenges faced by the scholarly communications community at this year’s NASIG conference. Exploring the potential opportunities for the enrichment of metadata, we consider the evolving role of the metadata librarian and review opportunities for all librarians to contribute to an important new collaboration for the wider benefit of scholarly communications. The Metadata 2020 collaboration was the context for the session, which focused on barriers to progress and the role of nonbibliographic metadata in the evolution of library services. This article provides a basic overview of the main types of standards used in cataloging, and outlines some of the upcoming changes to those standards that may dramatically affect cataloging practices and policies. Affected standards include Resource Description and Access, which will be updated to conform to a new data model, and the ubiquitous machine-readable cataloging format (MARC 21), which is intended to be replaced by a newly developed linked data ontology, the Bibliographic Framework Initiative. Out of the many Linked Data vocabularies available for use, several have emerged in the past few years as candidates for the description of continuing resources. Bibliographic Framework Transition Initiative (BIBFRAME) 2.0, PRESSoo, Resource Description and Access Registry, and Schema.org all contain classes and properties designed for the application of Linked Data for serials, but are not necessarily alike in their conceptual frameworks or completeness. This article examines possible alignments between elements most likely to be employed for describing serials, as well as how such alignments might remedy previously identified issues with certain vocabularies and aid discovery. Web-scale discovery services are powerful tools for facilitating access to an institution’s online holdings at the article level. However, the functionality of any given results link in a web-scale discovery search is dependent on multiple factors that are not always apparent to end users. The complexity involved in the troubleshooting process led the University of North Texas Libraries to embed a broken link report button in its search results and build a new troubleshooting workflow around this feature. Librarians from the Galter Health Sciences Library at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine undertook a citation analysis study in early 2017 to supplement traditional electronic journal usage data in the hopes of more effectively demonstrating journals’ value. The authors developed a methodology for gathering comprehensive publication and citation data for authors affiliated with the Feinberg School of Medicine, using Web of Science as the primary data source. Using this data, various metrics were employed to measure and evaluate journals in institutional and field-specific contexts, including co-citation networks, and increases or decreases of references over time per title. These metrics were compared against more traditional tools like Counting Online Usage of Networked Electronic Resources usage reports, cost-per-use analysis, and interlibrary loan statistics, to identify correlations and discrepancies. Database lists, frequently presented on Databases A to Z and subject pages, are a long-standing component of a library’s web presence. Tools for producing and managing the list are frequently a part of a more comprehensive library technology, such as electronic resource management (ERM) systems, integrated library system-ERMS, and content management systems such as LibGuides. Published literature provides good coverage of these technologies, but pays little attention to functionality for database list management. This article illustrates A to Z database list evolution from 1999 to 2017 by way of manifestations at the University of Central Florida Library, conceptualizes database list systems and functions, presents findings from a survey, and shares tips and practical considerations for producing and managing database lists. Building a library’s collection requires more than collecting print materials and shelving them in the stacks. The growth of e-books and e-serials over the past decade has been phenomenal. Given the scope of its collection building, the Library of Congress (LOC) has been required to actively pursue the acquisition and management of e-books and e-serials in its permanent collection. This article surveys how the LOC has taken advantage of existing structures and how it has pursued new paths to succeed in this undertaking. A study of job advertisements for technical services librarian positions provided insight into critical aspects of the library profession, issues that affect the work life of academic librarians. A review of several hundred job ads with a focus on job titles revealed problems with the use of terminology and the actual conceptualization of positions. The International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) has been the standard, eight-digit code used to identify newspapers, journals, magazines, and periodicals on all kinds of media—print and electronic—for the past 40 years. Periodically, the standard must be revised to allow it to accommodate new formats, changes in the publishing industry and information supply chain, and other developments in the information field. Regina Romano Reynolds, director of the U.S. ISSN Center at the Library of Congress, describes the issues that the ISSN International Centre perceives as necessitating a revision of the standard and the likely next steps in the International Organization for Standardization standards revision process. In the early 2000s, Clifford Lynch and Raym Crow had two different visions for the future of institutional respositories. Using their works as a starting point, T. Scott Plutchak discussed the initial aims of institutional respositories and addressed the dialectic between the view of institutional repositories as providing a method of preserving and nurturing new forms of scholarly communication and that of the institutional repository as a mechanism to transition to Open Access models for scholarly publications. Plutchak concludes that institutional repository librarians should focus efforts on collecting and preserving material outside of the formal publishing program in order to advance the work of our institutions, and to advance what libraries can do. Open Access publishing continues to grow, and it has profound implications for librarians in a variety of contexts. This report serves two functions. It provides background on Open Access publication of scholarly journals and the role of academic libraries in this movement. In particular, it examines the University of Lethbridge Journal Incubator as an example of library involvement in Open Access publication. The Deep Dive into KBART preconference workshop provided a comprehensive overview of the National Information Standards Organization Knowledge Bases and Related Tools (KBART) Phase II Recommended Practice (http://www.niso.org/publications/rp/rp-9–2014/). The workshop was divided into four sections. The first provided an overview of the background, purpose, and value of KBART to all members of the information supply chain. The next section focused on the basic guidelines for effective exchange of metadata with knowledgebases, including method of exchange, data format, file naming conventions, and frequency of exchange. The remaining two sections of the workshop addressed the correct use of KBART data fields, first in relation to serials and then to monographs. Through classroom instruction, interactive quizzes, and hands-on exercises, the workshop provided in-depth coverage of all KBART data elements, with special focus on many of the most frequently asked questions about the recommended practice. This article is a preliminary report on the work of the Canadian Linked Data Initiative (CLDI), a collaboration between five of Canada’s largest research libraries, Library and Archives Canada, Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec, and Canadiana.org. Although still in its nascent stage, participating institutions are working together to advance the technical services divisions of our libraries in the area of linked data. Project working groups are making progress in five main areas: grant funding, digital collections, education and training, legacy metadata enhancement, and in the evaluation and adaptation of Bibliographic Framework Transition Initiative tools. By working across geographic and institutional boundaries, the CLDI aims to chart a path to a new age of technical services, one based on the foundation of Linked Open Data. The institutional repository (IR) can provide a system for digitizing print serials for online delivery and a way to archive and preserve serial content already available online. Organizing serial content in IRs varies based on the architecture of each repository. In this presentation, Kay Teel of the Metadata Department at Stanford University Libraries discussed different approaches IRs use to manage serial content. She gave examples illustrating the inconsistent treatment of serials in the Stanford Digital Repository (SDR) and described a conceptual model for serials in the SDR to provide an improved user experience finding and accessing digital serial content. Metadata 2020 is a collaboration that aims to facilitate the work of all parties in scholarly communications to consistently improve metadata to enhance discoverability, facilitate new services, and create efficiencies with the ultimate goal of accelerating scholarly discovery. Almost a year after launch, Metadata 2020 has gained considerable ground in gathering information from multiple community groups. These community groups focus on metadata challenges and opportunities – finding ways to enhance metadata and finding new solutions. Now that Metadata 2020 has received feedback and stories from all sectors of the research and scholarly communication cycle, the group is targeting crucial points where metadata needs to work across all groups in order for a mature metadata model to become a useful reality. Juliane Schneider, Lead Data Curator at Harvard Catalyst, Clinical and Translational Science Center, provided an update on the Metadata 2020 project and led a roundtable discussion format where audience participants talked about challenges and offered recommendations for improvement to the Metadata 2020 project. Yvonne Campfens, executive director of the OA Switchboard, presented an overview of the Switchboard and shared pre-recorded statements from a panel of user-stakeholders: Liz Bal and Jennifer Sanchez-Davies of Jisc, Alex Howat of the Microbiology Society, and Adam Der of the Max Planck Digital Library. Throughout her presentation, Campfens also shared quotes from interviews conducted with representatives of research funding organizations, publishers, and research institutions. The comments from the panelists and interviewees served to illustrate the potential benefits of the OA Switchboard for organizations which are producing, supporting, and transitioning to Open Access (OA) publishing. This article concerns how higher education institutions across the United Kingdom are implementing systems and workflows in order to meet open access requirements for the next Research Excellence Framework. The way that institutions are preparing is not uniform, although there are key areas which require attention: cost management, advocacy, systems and metadata, structural workflows, and internal policy. The report summarizes a presentation given at the 2015 NASIG conference. It outlines metadata used by Project CERES, a print preservation and digitization project supported by a partnership between the United States Agriculture Information Network and the Center for Research Libraries. It also outlines metadata guidelines used to disclose print holdings committed for preservation and provides tips on creating efficiencies in gathering the detailed issue level data and providing quality assurance for digitization. Gathering detailed metadata to support the preservation of print is an investment in the preservation of essential scholarly resources. This study focused on how serials information for journal articles is presented based on a sampling of institutional repository platforms at a variety of institutions. Since metadata on journal articles in institutional repositories can often be incomplete and haphazard, not only due to the difficulty of entering the metadata in the first place, but due to the difficulty of adapting existing metadata schemes to represent a journal article accurately, how can libraries increase the discoverability of these individual articles from a wide variety of journals? By examining existing metadata schemes and how they are used to represent articles currently in institutional repositories, libraries can look for a way forward to better represent articles though adapting schemas, exploring possibilities for standardization of metadata for articles, and promoting good practices. Troubleshooting electronic resource linking issues can seem to be an insurmountable task—so many resources, so little time. Using interlibrary loan (ILL) data on requests for materials available online, the electronic resources staff at the Samford University Library detected problems with the implementation of their new link resolver. This data also provided a window into some systemic issues within the metadata of certain sources and the link resolver knowledgebase. In addition to helping us improve linking for our users, the establishment of a workflow for communicating cancelled ILL transaction data on an ongoing basis has also improved the communication between electronic resources staff and the ILL department regarding the overall linking process. This session reported the findings of a comparative analysis of how e-books are represented across multiple platforms. In this session, the presenters shared the results of a study that examined how a sample of academic e-books are represented across different platforms. Topics of analysis included: the inclusion of various metadata, the visual presentation of e-book content, and variations in search results. This presentation also focused on the similarities and differences between e-book representation and what impact these various representations might have on users of academic e-books.
