The growing problem of unsolicited text messages (smishing) and data irregularities necessitates stronger spam detection solutions. This paper explores the development of a sophisticated model designed to identify smishing messages by understanding the complex relationships among words, images, and context-specific factors, areas that remain underexplored in existing research. To address this, we merge a UCI spam dataset of regular text messages with real-world spam data, leveraging OCR technology for comprehensive analysis. The study employs a combination of traditional machine learning models, including K-means, Non-Negative Matrix Factorization, and Gaussian Mixture Models, along with feature extraction techniques such as TF-IDF and PCA. Additionally, deep learning models like RNN-Flatten, LSTM, and Bi-LSTM are utilized. The selection of these models is driven by their complementary strengths in capturing both the linear and non-linear relationships inherent in smishing messages. Machine learning models are chosen for their efficiency in handling structured text data, while deep learning models are selected for their superior ability to capture sequential dependencies and contextual nuances. The performance of these models is rigorously evaluated using metrics like accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score, enabling a comparative analysis between the machine learning and deep learning approaches. Notably, the K-means feature extraction with vectorizer achieved 91.01% accuracy, and the KNN-Flatten model reached 94.13% accuracy, emerging as the top performer. The rationale behind highlighting these models is their potential to significantly improve smishing detection rates. For instance, the high accuracy of the KNN-Flatten model suggests its applicability in real-time spam detection systems, but its computational complexity might limit scalability in large-scale deployments. Global Positioning Systems (GPSs) can collect tracking data to remotely monitor livestock well-being and pasture use. Supervised machine learning requires behavioral observations of monitored animals to identify changes in behavior, which is labor-intensive. Our goal was to identify animal behaviors automatically without using human observations. We designed a novel framework using unsupervised learning techniques. The framework contains two steps. The first step segments cattle tracking data using state-of-the-art time series segmentation algorithms, and the second step groups segments into clusters and then labels the clusters. To evaluate the applicability of our proposed framework, we utilized GPS tracking data collected from five cows in a 1096 ha rangeland pasture. Cow movement pathways were grouped into six behavior clusters based on velocity (m/min) and distance from water. Again, using velocity, these six clusters were classified into walking, grazing, and resting behaviors. The mean velocity for predicted walking and grazing and resting behavior was 44, 13 and 2 min/min, respectively, which is similar to other research. Predicted diurnal behavior patterns showed two primary grazing bouts during early morning and evening, like in other studies. In a cooling system for radio astronomy receivers, maintaining cold heads and compressors is essential for consistent performance. This project focuses on monitoring the power currents of the cold head's motor to address potential mechanical deterioration, which could jeopardize the overall functionality of the system. Using Hall effect sensors, a microcontroller-based electronic board, and artificial intelligence, the system detects and predicts anomalies. The model operates using an unsupervised approach based on incremental clustering. Since potential fault scenarios can be multiple and often challenging to simulate or identify during training, the system is initially trained using known operational categories. Over time, the system adapts and evolves by incorporating new data, which can be assigned to existing categories or, in the case of new anomalies, form new categories. This incremental approach enables the system to enhance its performance over the years, adapting to new anomaly scenarios and ensuring precise and reliable monitoring of the cold head's health. Basalt fiber-reinforced polymer (BFRP) reinforced concrete is a new alternative to conventional steel-reinforced concrete due to its high tensile strength and corrosion resistance characteristics. However, as BFRP is a brittle material, unexpected failure of concrete structures reinforced with BFRP may occur. In this study, the damage initiation and progression of BFRP-reinforced concrete slabs were monitored using the acoustic emission (AE) method as a structural health monitoring (SHM) solution. Two simply supported slabs were instrumented with an array of AE sensors in addition to a high-resolution camera, strain, and displacement sensors and then loaded until failure. The dominant damage mechanism was concrete cracking due to the over-reinforced design and adequate BFRP bar-concrete bonding. The AE method was evaluated in terms of identifying the damage initiation, progression from tensile to shear cracks, and the evolution of crack width. Unsupervised machine learning was applied to the AE data obtained from the first slab testing to develop the clusters of the damage mechanisms. The cluster results were validated using the k-means supervised learning model applied to the data obtained from the second slab. The accuracy of the K-NN model trained on the first slab was 99.2% in predicting three clusters (tensile crack, shear crack, and noise). Due to the limitation of a single indicator to characterize complex damage properties, a Statistical SHapley Additive exPlanation (SHAP) analysis was conducted to quantify the contribution of each AE feature to crack width. Based on the SHAP analysis, the AE duration had the highest correlation with the crack width. The cumulative duration of the AE sensor near the crack had close to 100% accuracy to track the crack width. It was concluded that the AE sensors positioned at the mid-span of slabs can be used as an effective SHM solution to monitor the initiation of tensile cracks, sudden changes in structural response due to major damage, damage evolution from tensile to shear cracks, and the progression of crack width. This study addresses the characterization of normal gait and pathological deviations induced by neurological diseases, considering knee angular kinematics in the sagittal plane. We propose an unsupervised approach based on Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) to identify different normal gait profiles (NGPs) corresponding to real cycles representing the overall behavior of healthy subjects, instead of considering an average reference, as done in the literature. The obtained NGPs are then used to measure the deviations of pathological gait cycles from normal gait with DTW. Hierarchical Clustering is applied to stratify deviations into clusters. Results show that three NGPs are necessary to finely characterize the heterogeneity of normal gait and accurately quantify pathological deviations. In particular, we automatically identify which lower limb is affected for Hemiplegic patients and characterize the severity of motor impairment for Paraplegic patients. Concerning Tetraplegic patients, different profiles appear in terms of impairment severity. These promising results are obtained by considering the raw description of gait signals. Indeed, we have shown that normalizing signals removes the temporal properties of signals, inducing a loss of dynamic information that is crucial for accurately measuring pathological deviations. Recently, various sophisticated methods, including machine learning and artificial intelligence, have been employed to examine health-related data. Medical professionals are acquiring enhanced diagnostic and treatment abilities by utilizing machine learning applications in the healthcare domain. Medical data have been used by many researchers to detect diseases and identify patterns. In the current literature, there are very few studies that address machine learning algorithms to improve healthcare data accuracy and efficiency. We examined the effectiveness of machine learning algorithms in improving time series healthcare metrics for heart rate data transmission (accuracy and efficiency). In this paper, we reviewed several machine learning algorithms in healthcare applications. After a comprehensive overview and investigation of supervised and unsupervised machine learning algorithms, we also demonstrated time series tasks based on past values (along with reviewing their feasibility for both small and large datasets). The surface condition of roadways has direct consequences on a wide range of processes related to the transportation technology, quality of road facilities, road safety, and traffic noise emissions. Methods developed for detection of road surface condition are crucial for maintenance and rehabilitation plans, also relevant for driving environment detection for autonomous transportation systems and e-mobility solutions. In this paper, the clustering of the tire-road noise emission features is proposed to detect the condition of the wheel tracks regions during naturalistic driving events. This acoustic-based methodology was applied in urban areas under nonstop real-life traffic conditions. Using the proposed method, it was possible to identify at least two groups of surface status on the inspected routes over the wheel-path interaction zone. Advances in neural networks have garnered growing interest in applications of machine vision in livestock management, but simpler landmark-based approaches suitable for small, early stage exploratory studies still represent a critical stepping stone towards these more sophisticated analyses. While such approaches are well-validated for calibrated images, the practical limitations of such imaging systems restrict their applicability in working farm environments. The aim of this study was to validate novel algorithmic approaches to improving the reliability of scale-free image biometrics acquired from uncalibrated images of minimally restrained livestock. Using a database of 551 facial images acquired from 108 dairy cows, we demonstrate that, using a simple geometric projection-based approach to metric extraction, a priori knowledge may be leveraged to produce more intuitive and reliable morphometric measurements than conventional informationally complete Euclidean distance matrix analysis. Where uncontrolled variations in image annotation, camera position, and animal pose could not be fully controlled through the design of morphometrics, we further demonstrate how modern unsupervised machine learning tools may be used to leverage the systematic error structures created by such lurking variables in order to generate bias correction terms that may subsequently be used to improve the reliability of downstream statistical analyses and dimension reduction. Railway switches and crossings (S&Cs) are critical, high-value assets in railway networks. A single failure of such an asset could result in severe network disturbance and considerable economical losses. Squats are common rail surface defects of S&Cs and need to be detected and estimated at an early stage to minimise maintenance costs and increase the reliability of S&Cs. For practicality, installation of wired or wireless sensors along the S&C may not be reliable due to the risk of damages of power and signal cables or sensors. To cope with these issues, this study presents a method for collecting and processing vibration data from an accelerometer installed at the point machine to extract features related to the squat defects of the S&C. An unsupervised anomaly-detection method using the isolation forest algorithm is applied to generate anomaly scores from the features. Important features are ranked and selected. This paper describes the procedure of parameter tuning and presents the achieved anomaly scores. The goal of this study is to address two major issues that undermine the large scale deployment of smart home sensing solutions in people's homes. These include the costs associated with having to install and maintain a large number of sensors, and the pragmatics of annotating numerous sensor data streams for activity classification. Our aim was therefore to propose a method to describe individual users' behavioural patterns starting from unannotated data analysis of a minimal number of sensors and a "blind" approach for activity recognition. The methodology included processing and analysing sensor data from 17 older adults living in community-based housing to extract activity information at different times of the day. The findings illustrate that 55 days of sensor data from a sensor configuration comprising three sensors, and extracting appropriate features including a "busyness" measure, are adequate to build robust models which can be used for clustering individuals based on their behaviour patterns with a high degree of accuracy (>85%). The obtained clusters can be used to describe individual behaviour over different times of the day. This approach suggests a scalable solution to support optimising the personalisation of care by utilising low-cost sensing and analysis. Large and densely sampled sensor datasets can contain a range of complex stochastic structures that are difficult to accommodate in conventional linear models. This can confound attempts to build a more complete picture of an animal's behavior by aggregating information across multiple asynchronous sensor platforms. The Livestock Informatics Toolkit (LIT) has been developed in R to better facilitate knowledge discovery of complex behavioral patterns across Precision Livestock Farming (PLF) data streams using novel unsupervised machine learning and information theoretic approaches. The utility of this analytical pipeline is demonstrated using data from a 6-month feed trial conducted on a closed herd of 185 mix-parity organic dairy cows. Insights into the tradeoffs between behaviors in time budgets acquired from ear tag accelerometer records were improved by augmenting conventional hierarchical clustering techniques with a novel simulation-based approach designed to mimic the complex error structures of sensor data. These simulations were then repurposed to compress the information in this data stream into robust empirically-determined encodings using a novel pruning algorithm. Nonparametric and semiparametric tests using mutual and pointwise information subsequently revealed complex nonlinear associations between encodings of overall time budgets and the order that cows entered the parlor to be milked. Seismic interpretation is a fundamental process for hydrocarbon exploration. This activity comprises identifying geological information through the processing and analysis of seismic data represented by different attributes. The interpretation process presents limitations related to its high data volume, own complexity, time consumption, and uncertainties incorporated by the experts' work. Unsupervised machine learning models, by discovering underlying patterns in the data, can represent a novel approach to provide an accurate interpretation without any reference or label, eliminating the human bias. Therefore, in this work, we propose exploring multiple methodologies based on unsupervised learning algorithms to interpret seismic data. Specifically, two strategies considering classical clustering algorithms and image segmentation methods, combined with feature selection, were evaluated to select the best possible approach. Additionally, the resultant groups of the seismic data were associated with groups obtained from well logs of the same area, producing an interpretation with aggregated lithologic information. Data-driven chatter detection techniques avoid complex physical modeling and provide the basis for industrial applications of cutting process monitoring. Among them, feature extraction is the key step of chatter detection, which can compensate for the accuracy disadvantage of machine learning algorithms to some extent if the extracted features are highly correlated with the milling condition. However, the classification accuracy of the current feature extraction methods is not satisfactory, and a combination of multiple features is required to identify the chatter. This limits the development of unsupervised machine learning algorithms for chattering detection, which further affects the application in practical processing. In this paper, the fractal feature of the signal is extracted by structure function method (SFM) for the first time, which solves the problem that the features are easily affected by process parameters. Milling chatter is identified based on k-means algorithm, which avoids the complex process of training model, and the judgment method of milling chatter is also discussed. The proposed method can achieve 94.4% identification accuracy by using only one single signal feature, which is better than other feature extraction methods, and even better than some supervised machine learning algorithms. Moreover, experiments show that chatter will affect the distribution of cutting bending moment, and it is not reliable to monitor tool wear through the polar plot of the bending moment. Road surface condition is vitally important for road safety and transportation efficiency. Conventionally, road surface monitoring relies on specialised vehicles equipped with professional devices, but such dedicated large-scale road surveying is usually costly, time-consuming, and prohibitively difficult for frequent pavement condition monitoring—for example, on an hourly or daily basis. Current advances in technologies such as smartphones, machine learning, big data, and cloud analytics have enabled the collection and analysis of a great amount of field data from numerous users (e.g., drivers) whilst driving on roads. In this regard, we envisage that a smartphone equipped with an accelerometer and GPS sensors could be used to collect road surface condition information much more frequently than specialised equipment. In this study, accelerometer data were collected at low rate from a smartphone via an Android-based application over multiple test-runs on a local road in Ireland. These data were successfully processed using power spectral density analysis, and defects were later identified using a k-means unsupervised machine learning algorithm, resulting in an average accuracy of 84%. Results demonstrated the potential of collecting crowdsourced data from a large population of road users for road surface defect detection on a quasi-real-time basis. This frequent reporting on a daily/hourly basis can be used to inform the relevant stakeholders for timely road maintenance, aiming to ensure the road's serviceability at a lower inspection and maintenance cost. This study investigated the whole-body coordination patterning in successful and faulty spikes using self-organising map-based cluster analysis. Ten young, elite volleyball players (aged 15.5 ± 0.7 years) performed 60 volleyball spikes in a real-game environment. Adopting the cluster analysis, based on a self-organising map, whole-body coordination patterning was explored between successful and faulty spikes of individual players. The self-organising maps (SOMs) portrayed whole body, lower and upper limb coordination dissimilarities during the jump phase and the ball impact phases between the successful and faulty spikes. The cluster analysis illustrated that the whole body, upper limb and lower limb coordination patterning of each individual's successful spikes were similar to their faulty spikes. Range of motion patterning also demonstrated no differences in kinematics between spike outcomes. Further, the upper limb angular velocity patterning of the players' successful/faulty spikes were similar. The SPM analysis portrayed significant differences between the normalized upper limb angular velocities from 35% to 45% and from 76% to 100% of the spike movement. Although the lower limb angular velocities are vital for achieving higher jumps in volleyball spikes, the results of this study portrayed that the upper limb angular velocities distinguish the differences between successful and faulty spikes among the attackers. This confirms the fact that volleyball coaches should shift their focus toward the upper limb velocity and coordination training for higher success rates in spiking for volleyball attackers. In this work, a low-cost, off-the-shelf load cell is installed on a typical hospital bed and implemented to measure the longitudinal ballistocardiogram (BCG) in order to evaluate its utility for successful contactless monitoring of heart and respiration rates. The major focus is placed on the beat-to-beat heart rate monitoring task, for which an unsupervised machine learning algorithm is employed, while its performance is compared to an electrocardiogram (ECG) signal that serves as a reference. The algorithm is a modified version of a previously published one, which had successfully detected 49.2% of recorded heartbeats. The demand for easily deployable indoor localisation solutions has been growing. Although several systems have been proposed, their limitations regarding the high implementation costs hinder most of them to be widely used. Fingerprinting-based IPS (Indoor Positioning Systems) depend on characteristics pervasively available in buildings. However, such systems require indoor floor plans, which might not be available, as well as environmental fingerprints, that need to be collected through human resources intensive processes. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes an algorithm for the automatic construction of indoor maps and fingerprints, solely depending on non-annotated crowdsourced data from smartphones. Our system relies on multiple gait-model based filtering techniques for accurate movement quantification in combination with opportunistic sensing observations. After the reconstruction of users' movement with PDR (Pedestrian Dead Reckoning) techniques, Wi-Fi measurements are clustered to partition the trajectories into segments. Similar segments, which belong to the same cluster, are identified using an adaptive approach based on a geomagnetic field distance. Finally, the floor plans are obtained through a data fusion process. Merging the acquired environmental data using the obtained floor plan, fingerprints are aligned to physical locations. Experimental results show that the proposed solution achieved comparable floor plans and fingerprints to those acquired manually, allowing the conclusion that is possible to automate the setup process of infrastructure-free IPS.
