A novel surface plasmon resonance (SPR) refractive index (RI) sensor based on the D-type dual-mode photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is proposed. The sensor employs a side-polished few-mode PCF that facilitates the transmission of the fundamental and second-order modes, with an integrated microfluidic channel positioned directly above the fiber core. This design minimizes the distance to the analyte and maximizes the interaction between the optical field and the analyte, thereby enhancing the SPR effect and resonance loss for improved sensing performance. Au-TiO2 dual-layer material was coated on the surface of a microfluidic channel to enhance the penetration depth of the core evanescent field and tune the resonance wavelength to the near-infrared band, meeting the special needs of chemical and biomedical detection fields. The finite element method was utilized to systematically investigate the coupling characteristics between various modes and surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes, as well as the impact of structural parameters on the sensor performance. The results indicate that the LP11b_y mode exhibits greater wavelength sensitivity than the HE11_y mode, with a maximum sensitivity of 33,000 nm/RIU and an average sensitivity of 8272.7 nm/RIU in the RI sensing range of 1.25–1.36, which is higher than the maximum sensitivity of 16,000 nm/RIU and average sensitivity of 5666.7 nm/RIU for the HE11b_y mode. It is believed that the proposed PCF-SPR sensor features both high sensitivity and high resolution, which will become a critical device for wide RI detection in mid-infrared fields. The deep integration of communication and sensing technology in fiber-optic systems has been highly sought after in recent years, with the aim of rapid and cost-effective large-scale upgrading of existing communication cables in order to monitor ocean activities. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, a high-degree of compatibility was shown between forward-transmission distributed fiber-optic vibration sensing and an on–off keying (OOK)-based communication system. This type of deep integration allows distributed sensing to utilize the optical fiber communication cable, wavelength channel, optical signal and demodulation receiver. The addition of distributed sensing functionality does not have an impact on the communication performance, as sensing involves no hardware changes and does not occupy any bandwidth; instead, it non-intrusively analyzes inherent vibration-induced noise in the data transmitted. Likewise, the transmission of communication data does not affect the sensing performance. For data transmission, 150 Mb/s was demonstrated with a BER of 2.8 × 10−7 and a QdB of 14.1. For vibration sensing, the forward-transmission method offers distance, time, frequency, intensity and phase-resolved monitoring. The limit of detection (LoD) is 8.3 pε/Hz1/2 at 1 kHz. The single-span sensing distance is 101.3 km (no optical amplification), with a spatial resolution of 0.08 m, and positioning accuracy can be as low as 10.1 m. For distributed fiber-optic sensors, slowly varying vibration signals down to 5 mHz are difficult to measure due to low signal-to-noise ratios. We propose and demonstrate a forward transmission-based distributed sensing system, combined with a polarization-generated carrier for detection bandwidth reduction, and cross-correlation for vibration positioning. By applying a higher-frequency carrier signal using a fast polarization controller, the initial phase of the known carrier frequency is monitored and analyzed to demodulate the vibration signal. Only the polarization carrier needs to be analyzed, not the arbitrary-frequency signal, which can lead to hardware issues (reduced detection bandwidth and less noise). The difference in arrival time between the two detection ends obtained through cross-correlation can determine the vibration position. Our experimental results demonstrate a sensitivity of 0.63 mrad/με and a limit of detection (LoD) of 355.6 pε/Hz1/2 at 60 Hz. A lock-in amplifier can be used on the fixed carrier to achieve a minimal LoD. The sensing distance can reach 131.5 km and the positioning accuracy is 725 m (root-mean-square error) while the spatial resolution is 105 m. The tested vibration frequency range is between 0.005 Hz and 160 Hz. A highly sensitivity balloon-like fiber interferometer based on ethanol coating is presented in this paper. The Mach–Zehnder interferometer is formed by bending a single-mode fiber to a balloon-like structure and nested in the Teflon tube. Then, an ethanol solution was filled into the tube of the balloon-like fiber interferometer by the capillary effect. Due to the high sensitivity of the refractive index (RI) of ethanol solutions to temperature, when the external temperature varies, the optical path difference changes. The change in temperature can be detected by the shift in the interference spectrum. Limited by the size of the balloon-like structure, three kinds of these structures with different sensitive lengths were prepared to select the best parameters. The sensitive lengths were 10, 15 and 20 mm, respectively, and the RI detection performance of each structure in 10~26% NaCl solutions was investigated experimentally. The results show that when the sensitive length is 20 mm, the RI sensitivity of the sensor is the highest, which is 212.88 nm/RIU. Ultimately, the sensitive length filled with ethanol is 20 mm. The experimental results show that the temperature sensitivity of the structure is 1.145 nm/°C in the range of 28.1 °C~35 °C, which is 10.3 times higher than that of an unfilled balloon-like structure (0.111 nm/°C). We propose a humidity sensor using an excessively tilted fiber grating (Ex-TFG) coated with agarose fabricated using femtosecond laser processing. The processed grating showcases remarkable differentiation between TE and TM modes, achieving an exceptionally narrow bandwidth of approximately 1.5 nm and an impressive modulation depth of up to 15 dB for both modes. We exposed the agarose-coated TFG sensor to various relative humidity levels and monitored the resonance wavelength to test its humidity sensing capability. Our findings demonstrated that the sensor exhibited a rapid response time (2–4 s) and showed a high response sensitivity (18.5 pm/%RH) between the humidity changes and the resonant wavelength shifts. The high sensitivity, linearity, repeatability, low hysteresis, and excellent long-term stability of the TFG humidity sensor, as demonstrated in our experimental results, make it an attractive option for environmental monitoring or biomedical diagnosis. A distributed optical fiber refractive index sensor based on etched Ge-doped SMF in optical frequency domain reflection (OFDR) was proposed and demonstrated. The etched Ge-doped SMF was obtained by only using wet-etching, i.e., hydrofluoric acid solution. The distributed refractive index sensing is achieved by measuring the spectral shift of the local RBS spectra using OFDR. The sensing length of 10 cm and the spatial resolution of 5.25 mm are achieved in the experiment. The refractive index sensing range is as wide as 1.33–1.44 refractive index units (RIU), where the average sensitivity was about 757 GHz/RIU. A high-spatial-resolution OFDR distributed temperature sensor based on Au-SMF was experimentally demonstrated by using step-by-step and image wavelet denoising methods (IWDM). The measured temperature between 50 and 600 °C could be successfully demodulated by using SM-IWDM at a spatial resolution of 3.2 mm. The temperature sensitivity coefficient of the Au-SMF was 3.18 GHz/°C. The accuracy of the demodulated temperature was approximately 0.24 °C. Nanomechanical resonators made from suspended graphene combine the properties of ultracompactness and ultrahigh detection sensitivity, making them interesting devices for sensing applications. However, nanomechanical systems can be affected by membrane stress. The present work developed an optomechanical resonator for thermal stress sensing. The proposed resonator consists of a section of hollow core fiber (HCF) and a trampoline graphene–Au membrane. An all-optical system that integrated optical excitation and optical detection was applied. Then, the resonance frequency of the resonator was obtained through this all-optical system. In addition, this system and the resonator were used to detect the membrane's built-in stress, which depended on the ambient temperature, by monitoring the resonance frequency shift. The results verified that the temperature-induced thermal effect had a significant impact on membrane stress. Temperature sensitivities of 2.2646 kHz/°C and 2.3212 kHz/°C were obtained when the temperature rose and fell, respectively. An all-fiber glucose sensor is proposed and demonstrated based on a helical intermediate-period fiber grating (HIPFG) produced by using a hydrogen/oxygen flame heating method. The HIPFG, with a grating length of 1.7 cm and a period of 35 μm, presents four sets of double dips with low insertion losses and strong coupling strengths in the transmission spectrum. The HIPFG possesses an averaged refractive index (RI) sensitivity of 213.6 nm/RIU nm/RIU in the RI range of 1.33–1.36 and a highest RI sensitivity of 472 nm/RIU at RI of 1.395. In addition, the HIPFG is demonstrated with a low-temperature sensitivity of 3.67 pm/°C, which promises a self-temperature compensation in glucose detection. In the glucose-sensing test, the HIPFG sensor manifests a detection sensitivity of 0.026 nm/(mg/mL) and a limit of detection (LOD) of 1 mg/mL. Moreover, the HIPFG sensor exhibits good stability in 2 h, indicating its capacity for long-time detection. The properties of easy fabrication, high flexibility, insensitivity to temperature, and good stability of the proposed HIPFG endow it with a promising potential for long-term and compact biosensors. We propose and demonstrate a novel high-temperature-resistant vector accelerometer, consisting of a ring cavity laser and sensing probe (i.e., fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs)) inscribed in a seven-core fiber (SCF) by using the femtosecond laser direct writing technique. A ring cavity laser serves as a light source. Three FBGs in the outer cores of SCF, which are not aligned in a straight line, are employed to test the vibration. These three FBGs have 120° angular separation in the SCF, and hence, vibration orientation and acceleration can be measured simultaneously. Moreover, the FBG in the central core was used as a reflector in the ring cavity laser, benefiting to resist external interference factors, such as temperature and strain fluctuation. Such a proposed accelerometer exhibits a working frequency bandwidth ranging from 4 to 68 Hz, a maximum sensitivity of 54.2 mV/g, and the best azimuthal angle accuracy of 0.21° over a range of 0–360°. Furthermore, we investigated the effect of strain and temperature on the performance of this sensor. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) only exhibits a fluctuation of ~1 dB in the range (0, 2289 με) and (50 °C, 1050 °C). A novel optical fiber sensing technology based on intensity distribution change in orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode is proposed and implemented herein. The technology utilizes a chiral long-period fiber grating (CLPFG) to directly excite the 1st-order OAM (OAM1) mode. The intensity changes in the coherent superposition state between the fundamental mode and the OAM1 mode at the non-resonant wavelength of the CLPFG is tracked in order to sense the external parameters applied to the grating area. Applying this technology to temperature measurement, the intensity distribution change has a good linear relationship with respect to temperature in the range of 30 °C to 100 °C. When the intensity was denoted by the number of pixels with a gray value of one after binarization of collected images, the sensitivity was 103 px/°C and the corresponding resolution was 0.0097 °C. Meanwhile, theoretical and experimental results show that the sensitivity and resolution can be further improved via changing the area of the collected image. Compared with sensing methods based on spiral interference pattern rotation in previous work, this sensing technology has the advantage of exquisite structure, easy realization, and good stability, thus making it a potential application in practices. A nondestructive measurement method based on an Optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) was demonstrated to achieve Young's modulus of an optical fiber. Such a method can be used to measure, not only the averaged Young's modulus within the measured fiber length, but also Young's modulus distribution along the optical fiber axis. Moreover, the standard deviation of the measured Young's modulus is calculated to analyze the measurement error. Young's modulus distribution of the coated and uncoated single mode fiber (SMF) samples was successfully measured along the optical fiber axis. The average Young's modulus of the coated and uncoated SMF samples was 13.75 ± 0.14, and 71.63 ± 0.43 Gpa, respectively, within the measured fiber length of 500 mm. The measured Young's modulus distribution along the optical fiber axis could be used to analyze the damage degree of the fiber, which is very useful to nondestructively estimate the service life of optical fiber sensors immersed into smart engineer structures. Optical humidity sensors have evolved through decades of research and development, constantly adapting to new demands and challenges. The continuous growth is supported by the emergence of a variety of optical fibers and functional materials, in addition to the adaptation of different sensing mechanisms and optical techniques. This review attempts to cover the majority of optical humidity sensors reported to date, highlight trends in design and performance, and discuss the challenges of different applications. In this paper, we demonstrate a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with a wide range and a comb with continuous cladding mode resonances inscribed in non-photosensitive single mode fibers using a femtosecond laser and a phase mask. The FBG is inscribed in the core and cladding, exciting a series of cladding modes in transmission. The birefringence induced by this FBG structure offers significant polarization-dependence for cladding modes, thus allowing the vector fiber twist to be perceived. By measuring the peak-to-peak differential intensity of orthogonally polarized cladding mode resonances, the proposed sensor presents totally opposite intensity response in the anticlockwise direction for the torsion angle ranging from −45° to 45°. The cladding mode comb approximately covers wavelengths over the O-, E-, S-, and C-bands in transmission. The cutoff cladding mode of air can be observed in the spectrum. Thus, the sensible refractive index range is estimated to be from 1.00 to 1.44. Temperature responsivity of the grating is also characterized. We demonstrate a high-strength strain sensor based on a micro-air-cavity reshaped through repeating arc discharge. The strain sensor has a micro-scale cavity, approximate plane reflection, and large wall thickness, contributing to a broad free spectrum range ~36 nm at 1555 nm, high fringe contrast ~38 dB, and super-high mechanical robustness, respectively. A sensitivity of ~2.39 pm/με and a large measurement range of 0 to 9800 με are achieved for this strain sensor. The strain sensor has a high strength, e.g., the tensile strain applied the sensor is up to 10,000 με until the tested the single-mode fiber is broken into two sections. A high-energy nanosecond-pulsed ultraviolet (UV) laser Talbot interferometer for high-efficiency, mass production of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) array was experimentally demonstrated. High-quality FBG arrays were successfully inscribed in both H2-free and H2-loaded standard single-mode fibers (SMFs) with high inscription efficiency and excellent reproducibility. Compared with the femtosecond pulse that had a coherent length of several tens of micrometers, a longer coherent length (~10 mm) of the employed laser rendered a wider FBG wavelength versatility over 700 nm band (1200–1900 nm) without the need for optical path difference (OPD) compensation. Dense FBG array with center wavelength separation of ~0.4 nm was achieved and more than 1750 FBGs with separated center wavelength could be inscribed in a single H2-free or H2-loaded SMF in theory, which is promising for mass production of FBG arrays in industry. Moreover, precise focusing of laser beam was superfluous for the proposed system due to the high energy density of pulse. We demonstrate a silica diaphragm-based fiber tip Fabry–Perot interferometer (FPI) for high-pressure (40 MPa) sensing. By using a fiber tip polishing technique, the thickness of the silica diaphragm could be precisely controlled and the pressure sensitivity of the fabricated FPI sensor was enhanced significantly by reducing the diaphragm thickness; however, the relationship between the pressure sensitivity and diaphragm thickness is not linear. A high sensitivity of −1.436 nm/MPa and a linearity of 0.99124 in hydraulic pressure range of 0 to 40 MPa were demonstrated for a sensor with a diaphragm thickness of 4.63 μm. The achieved sensitivity was about one order of magnitude higher than the previous results reported on similar fiber tip FPI sensors in the same pressure measurement range. Sensors with a thinner silica diaphragm (i.e., 4.01 and 2.09 μm) rendered further increased hydraulic pressure sensitivity, but yield a significant nonlinear response. Two geometric models and a finite element method (FEM) were carried out to explain the nonlinear response. A highly sensitive torsion sensor can be constructed by combining a twisted photonic crystal fiber with a liquid-filled waveguide in its air-hole cladding. The torsion sensitivity of this type of sensor is determined directly by the phase-matching conditions between the fiber core mode and the liquid waveguide mode, which can be improved by tuning the helicity (denoted by the initial twist rate, α0) of the twisted photonic crystal fiber. The enhancement mechanism of α0 on the sensitivity of the proposed torsion sensor is investigated theoretically, followed by experimental verifications, and a torsion sensitivity as high as 446 nm∙mm∙rad−1 can be obtained by tailoring these parameters. Experimental results show that the torsion sensitivity increases with α0 decreasing from 3.142 to 3.925 rad/mm, which are in consistence with that of the numerical predictions. A high sensitivity fiber-optic sensor based on self-imaging effect in a hollow-core capillary waveguide (HCCW) is presented for sensing applications. The sensor is composed of a section of HCCW fusion spliced between single mode fibers (SMFs). The self-imaging effect in the HCCW is investigated with different fiber lengths and arc-fusion parameters. By infiltrating the hollow core with index matching liquids, the peak wavelength of the proposed device shifts towards longer wavelengths. The temperature and refractive index (RI) responses of the sensor are studied systematically. When temperature is increased from 25 °C to 75 °C, the temperature sensitivity of the device can be improved significantly with the infiltrated structure, and reaches −0.49 nm/°C, compared with that of the un-filled device, which is 9.8 pm/°C. For the RI response, the liquid-filled structure achieves sensitivity of 12,005 nm/RIU in the range between 1.448 and 1.450, slightly higher than the 11,920 nm/RIU achieved by the un-filled one. This paper presents a review of our work concerning the recent progress in fabrications and applications of heating-induced long period fiber gratings (LPFGs). Firstly, three kinds of heating fabrication techniques based on CO2 laser, hydrogen–oxygen flame and arc discharge are demonstrated to fabricate LPFGs, i.e., standard LPFGs (SLPFGs) and helical LPFGs (HLPFGs), in different types of optical fibers such as conventional fibers, photonic crystal fibers, and photonic bandgap fibers. Secondly, the all-fiber orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode converters based on heating-induced SLPFGs and HLPFGs in different types of fibers are studied to increase the transmission capacity. A highly sensitive temperature sensor based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of a side-polished single mode fiber is demonstrated. The sensor consists of a gold film coated side-polished fiber covered by a layer of UV-curable adhesive. Before introducing the UV-curable adhesive, the gold-coated fiber exhibits refractive index (RI) sensitivity of 1691.6 nm/RIU to 8800 nm/RIU in the range of 1.32 to 1.43. The resonant wavelength of the SPR sensor shifts to 650 nm when the adhesive is coated on the gold film, and is fixed at about 725 nm when the adhesive is cured. Due to the high thermo-optic and thermal expansion coefficient of the adhesive, the sensor structure achieves a temperature sensitivity of −0.978 nm/°C between 25 °C and 100 °C. The proposed optical fiber SPR sensor is simple, highly sensitive and cost effective, which may find potential applications for temperature measurements in the biomedical and environmental industries. A simple vibration sensor is proposed and demonstrated based on an optical fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) with an in-fiber collimator. The device was fabricated by splicing a quarter-pitch graded index fiber (GIF) with a section of a hollow-core fiber (HCF) interposed between single mode fibers (SMFs). The static displacement sensitivity of the FPI with an in-fiber collimator was 5.17 × 10−4 μm−1, whereas the maximum static displacement sensitivity of the device without collimator was 1.73 × 10−4 μm−1. Moreover, the vibration sensitivity of the FPI with the collimator was 60.22 mV/g at 100 Hz, which was significantly higher than the sensitivity of the FPI without collimator (11.09 mV/g at 100 Hz). The proposed FPI with an in-fiber collimator also exhibited a vibration sensitivity nearly one order of magnitude higher than the device without the collimator at frequencies ranging from 40 to 200 Hz. We propose and demonstrate a cascaded hollow-core fiber (HCF) device for multi-parameter sensing based on the combination of antiresonant reflecting guidance (ARRG) and Mach-Zender interference (MZI). The device was fabricated by splicing two sections of HCF together. Two sets of fringes, which have different free spectral ranges, were generated from ARRG and MZI, respectively, and were aliasing in the transmission spectrum. The two sets of fringes were then separated using a band pass filter and a Gaussian fitting technique. The wavelengths at two transmission loss dips formed by ARRG and MZI exhibit a temperature sensitivity of 14.1 and 28.5 pm/°C, and a strain sensitivity of 0.4 and −0.8 pm/με, respectively. By using a crossing matrix with differences sensitivities, the cross-sensitivity between temperature and strain can be solved. The gas pressure response of the cascaded HCF device was also tested up to 300 °C, and linear relationships between the gas pressure sensitivities and temperature were found, which can be used in gas pressure application in various temperatures. Moreover, the proposed cascaded HCF sensor is compact, low cost, and simple for fabrication, and hence offers a promising way for the simultaneous measurement of multiple parameters, such as temperature, strain, and gas pressure. We propose a novel method for generating ±1-order orbital angular momentum (OAM) in long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) by adjusting a polarization controller (PC). An LPFG, inscribed in a four-mode fiber (4MF) using a CO2 laser, was used to generate OAM±1 across a broad range of wavelengths from 1530 nm to 1630 nm. Additionally, the OAM vortex phase remained stable while the temperature increased from 23 °C to 50 °C. The LPFG, as a temperature sensor, and its temperature sensitivity was measured to be 38.6 ± 0.37 pm/°C at the resonant wavelength of 1625 nm. This design offers simple fabrication and several properties which are highly beneficial for all-fiber optical communications based on the OAM mode-division multiplexing technique.
