Stress recognition, particularly using machine learning (ML) with physiological data such as heart rate variability (HRV), holds promise for mental health interventions. However, limited datasets in affective computing and healthcare research can lead to inaccurate conclusions regarding the ML model performance. This study employed supervised learning algorithms to classify stress and relaxation states using HRV measures. To account for limitations associated with small datasets, robust strategies were implemented based on methodological recommendations for ML with a limited dataset, including data segmentation, feature selection, and model evaluation. Our findings highlight that the random forest model achieved the best performance in distinguishing stress from non-stress states. Notably, it showed higher performance in identifying stress from relaxation (F1-score: 86.3%) compared to neutral states (F1-score: 65.8%). Additionally, the model demonstrated generalizability when tested on independent secondary datasets, showcasing its ability to distinguish between stress and relaxation states. While our performance metrics might be lower than some previous studies, this likely reflects our focus on robust methodologies to enhance the generalizability and interpretability of ML models, which are crucial for real-world applications with limited datasets. Recently, explainability in machine and deep learning has become an important area in the field of research as well as interest, both due to the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) methods and understanding of the decisions made by models. The explainability of artificial intelligence (XAI) is due to the increasing consciousness in, among other things, data mining, error elimination, and learning performance by various AI algorithms. Moreover, XAI will allow the decisions made by models in problems to be more transparent as well as effective. In this study, models from the 'glass box' group of Decision Tree, among others, and the 'black box' group of Random Forest, among others, were proposed to understand the identification of selected types of currant powders. The learning process of these models was carried out to determine accuracy indicators such as accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score. It was visualized using Local Interpretable Model Agnostic Explanations (LIMEs) to predict the effectiveness of identifying specific types of blackcurrant powders based on texture descriptors such as entropy, contrast, correlation, dissimilarity, and homogeneity. Bagging (Bagging_100), Decision Tree (DT0), and Random Forest (RF7_gini) proved to be the most effective models in the framework of currant powder interpretability. The measures of classifier performance in terms of accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score for Bagging_100, respectively, reached values of approximately 0.979. In comparison, DT0 reached values of 0.968, 0.972, 0.968, and 0.969, and RF7_gini reached values of 0.963, 0.964, 0.963, and 0.963. These models achieved classifier performance measures of greater than 96%. Low-cost ambient sensors have been identified as a promising technology for monitoring air pollution at a high spatio-temporal resolution. However, the pollutant data captured by these cost-effective sensors are less accurate than their conventional counterparts and require careful calibration to improve their accuracy and reliability. In this paper, we propose to leverage temporal information, such as the duration of time a sensor has been deployed and the time of day the reading was taken, in order to improve the calibration of low-cost sensors. This information is readily available and has so far not been utilized in the reported literature for the calibration of cost-effective ambient gas pollutant sensors. We make use of three data sets collected by research groups around the world, who gathered the data from field-deployed low-cost CO and NO2 sensors co-located with accurate reference sensors. Our investigation shows that using the temporal information as a co-variate can significantly improve the accuracy of common machine learning-based calibration techniques, such as Random Forest and Long Short-Term Memory. In order to realize the accurate and reliable fault diagnosis of hydraulic systems, a diagnostic model based on improved tuna swarm optimization (ITSO), optimized convolutional neural networks (CNNs), and bi-directional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) networks is proposed. Firstly, sensor selection is implemented using the random forest algorithm to select useful signals from six kinds of physical or virtual sensors including pressure, temperature, flow rate, vibration, motor power, and motor efficiency coefficient. After that, fused features are extracted by CNN, and then, BiLSTM is applied to learn the forward and backward information contained in the data. The ITSO algorithm is adopted to adaptively optimize the learning rate, regularization coefficient, and node number to obtain the optimal CNN-BiLSTM network. Improved Chebyshev chaotic mapping and the nonlinear reduction strategy are adopted to improve population initialization and individual position updating, further promoting the optimization effect of TSO. The experimental results show that the proposed method can automatically extract fusion features and effectively utilize multi-sensor information. The diagnostic accuracies of the plunger pump, cooler, throttle valve, and accumulator are 99.07%, 99.4%, 98.81%, and 98.51%, respectively. Geological hazards in Xinxian County, Xinyang City, Henan Province, are characterized by their small scale, wide distribution, and significant influence from regional tectonics. This study focuses on collapses and landslide hazards within the area, selecting twelve evaluation factors: aspect, slope shape, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), topographic relief, distance from geological structure, slope, distance from roads, land use cover type, area of land change (2012–2022), average annual rainfall (2012–2022), and river network density. Utilizing data from historical disaster sites across the region, the information quantity method and hierarchical analysis method are employed to ascertain the information quantity and weight of each factor. Subsequently, a random forest model is applied to perform susceptibility zoning of geological hazards in Xinxian County and to examine the characteristics of these geological disasters. The results show that in the study area, the primary factors influencing the development of geohazards are the distance from roads, rock groups, and distance from geological structure areas. A comparison of the susceptibility results obtained through two methods, the analytic hierarchy process information quantity method and the random forests model, reveals that the former exhibits a higher accuracy. This model categorizes the geohazard susceptibility in the study area into four levels: low, medium, high, and very high. Notably, the areas of very high and high susceptibility together cover 559.17 km2, constituting 35.99% of the study area's total area, and encompass 57 disaster sites, which represent 72.15% of all disaster sites. Geological hazards in Xinxian County frequently manifest on steep canyon inclines, along the curved and concave banks of mountain rivers, within watershed regions, on gully inclines, atop steep cliffs, and on artificially created slopes, among other sites. Areas with very high and high vulnerability to these hazards are mainly concentrated near the county's geological formations. The gneiss formations are widely exposed in Xinxian County, and the gneisses' strength is significantly changed under weathering, which makes the properties of the different degrees of weathering of the rock and soil bodies play a decisive role in the stability of the slopes. Dynamic wireless charging (DWC) has emerged as a viable approach to mitigate range anxiety by ensuring continuous and uninterrupted charging for electric vehicles in motion. DWC systems rely on the length of the transmitter, which can be categorized into long-track transmitters and segmented coil arrays. The segmented coil array, favored for its heightened efficiency and reduced electromagnetic interference, stands out as the preferred option. However, in such DWC systems, the need arises to detect the vehicle's position, specifically to activate the transmitter coils aligned with the receiver pad and de-energize uncoupled transmitter coils. This paper introduces various machine learning algorithms for precise vehicle position determination, accommodating diverse ground clearances of electric vehicles and various speeds. Through testing eight different machine learning algorithms and comparing the results, the random forest algorithm emerged as superior, displaying the lowest error in predicting the actual position. This paper focuses on the emissions of the three most sold categories of light vehicles: sedans, SUVs, and pickups. The research is carried out through an innovative methodology based on GPS and machine learning in real driving conditions. For this purpose, driving data from the three best-selling vehicles in Ecuador are acquired using a data logger with GPS included, and emissions are measured using a PEMS in six RDE tests with two standardized routes for each vehicle. The data obtained on Route 1 are used to estimate the gears used during driving using the K-means algorithm and classification trees. Then, the relative importance of driving variables is estimated using random forest techniques, followed by the training of ANNs to estimate CO2, CO, NOX, and HC. The data generated on Route 2 are used to validate the obtained ANNs. These models are fed with a dataset generated from 324, 300, and 316 km of random driving for each type of vehicle. The results of the model were compared with the IVE model and an OBD-based model, showing similar results without the need to mount the PEMS on the vehicles for long test drives. The generated model is robust to different traffic conditions as a result of its training and validation using a large amount of data obtained under completely random driving conditions. In recent years, soft robotic sensors have rapidly advanced to endow robots with the ability to interact with the external environment. Here, we propose a polymer optical fiber (POF) sensor with sensitive and stable detection performance for strain, bending, twisting, and pressing. Thus, we can map the real-time output light intensity of POF sensors to the spatial morphology of the elastomer. By leveraging the intrinsic correlations of neighboring sensors and machine learning algorithms, we realize the spatially resolved detection of the pressing and multi-dimensional deformation of elastomers. Specifically, the developed intelligent sensing system can effectively recognize the two-dimensional indentation position with a prediction accuracy as large as ~99.17%. The average prediction accuracy of combined strain and twist is ~98.4% using the random forest algorithm. In addition, we demonstrate an integrated intelligent glove for the recognition of hand gestures with a high recognition accuracy of 99.38%. Our work holds promise for applications in soft robots for interactive tasks in complex environments, providing robots with multidimensional proprioceptive perception. Wearable sensors could be beneficial for the continuous quantification of upper limb motor symptoms in people with Parkinson's disease (PD). This work evaluates the use of two inertial measurement units combined with supervised machine learning models to classify and predict a subset of MDS-UPDRS III subitems in PD. We attached the two compact wearable sensors on the dorsal part of each hand of 33 people with PD and 12 controls. Each participant performed six clinical movement tasks in parallel with an assessment of the MDS-UPDRS III. Random forest (RF) models were trained on the sensor data and motor scores. An overall accuracy of 94% was achieved in classifying the movement tasks. When employed for classifying the motor scores, the averaged area under the receiver operating characteristic values ranged from 68% to 92%. Motor scores were additionally predicted using an RF regression model. In a comparative analysis, trained support vector machine models outperformed the RF models for specific tasks. Furthermore, our results surpass the literature in certain cases. The methods developed in this work serve as a base for future studies, where home-based assessments of pharmacological effects on motor function could complement regular clinical assessments. The availability of a sufficient number of annotated samples is one of the main challenges of the supervised methods used to classify crop types from remote sensing images. Creating these samples is time-consuming and costly. Active Learning (AL) offers a solution by streamlining sample annotation, resulting in more efficient training with less effort. Unfortunately, most of the developed AL methods overlook spatial information inherent in remote sensing images. We propose a novel spatially explicit AL that uses the semi-variogram to identify and discard redundant, spatially adjacent samples. It was evaluated using Random Forest (RF) and Sentinel-2 Satellite Image Time Series in two study areas from the Netherlands and Belgium. In the Netherlands, the spatially explicit AL selected 97 samples achieving an overall accuracy of 80%, compared to traditional AL selecting 169 samples with 82% overall accuracy. In Belgium, spatially explicit AL selected 223 samples and obtained 60% overall accuracy, while traditional AL selected 327 samples and obtained an overall accuracy of 63%. We concluded that the developed AL method helped RF achieve a good performance mostly for the classes consisting of individual crops with a relatively distinctive growth pattern such as sugar beets or cereals. The escalating reliance of modern society on information and communication technology has rendered it vulnerable to an array of cyber-attacks, with distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks emerging as one of the most prevalent threats. This paper delves into the intricacies of DDoS attacks, which exploit compromised machines numbering in the thousands to disrupt data services and online commercial platforms, resulting in significant downtime and financial losses. Recognizing the gravity of this issue, various detection techniques have been explored, yet the quantity and prior detection of DDoS attacks has seen a decline in recent methods. This research introduces an innovative approach by integrating evolutionary optimization algorithms and machine learning techniques. Specifically, the study proposes XGB-GA Optimization, RF-GA Optimization, and SVM-GA Optimization methods, employing Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) Optimization with Tree-based Pipelines Optimization Tool (TPOT)-Genetic Programming. Datasets pertaining to DDoS attacks were utilized to train machine learning models based on XGB, RF, and SVM algorithms, and 10-fold cross-validation was employed. The models were further optimized using EAs, achieving remarkable accuracy scores: 99.99% with the XGB-GA method, 99.50% with RF-GA, and 99.99% with SVM-GA. Furthermore, the study employed TPOT to identify the optimal algorithm for constructing a machine learning model, with the genetic algorithm pinpointing XGB-GA as the most effective choice. This research significantly advances the field of DDoS attack detection by presenting a robust and accurate methodology, thereby enhancing the cybersecurity landscape and fortifying digital infrastructures against these pervasive threats. Detecting road cracks is essential for inspecting and assessing the integrity of concrete pavement structures. Traditional image-based methods often require complex preprocessing to extract crack features, making them challenging when dealing with noisy concrete surfaces in diverse real-world scenarios, such as autonomous vehicle road detection. This study introduces an image-based crack detection approach that combines a Random Forest machine learning classifier with a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) to address these challenges. Three state-of-the-art models, namely MobileNet, InceptionV3, and Xception, were employed and trained using a dataset of 30,000 images to build an effective CNN. A systematic comparison of validation accuracy across various base learning rates identified a base learning rate of 0.001 as optimal, achieving a maximum validation accuracy of 99.97%. This optimal learning rate was then applied in the subsequent testing phase. The robustness and flexibility of the trained models were evaluated using 6,000 test photos, each with a resolution of 224 × 224 pixels, which were not part of the training or validation sets. The outstanding results, boasting a remarkable 99.95% accuracy, 99.95% precision, 99.94% recall, and a matching 99.94% F1 Score, unequivocally affirm the efficacy of the proposed technique in precisely identifying road fractures in photographs taken on real concrete surfaces. A near-global framework for automated training data generation and land cover classification using shallow machine learning with low-density time series imagery does not exist. This study presents a methodology to map nine-class, six-class, and five-class land cover using two dates (winter and non-winter) of a Sentinel-2 granule across seven international sites. The approach uses a series of spectral, textural, and distance decision functions combined with modified ancillary layers (such as global impervious surface and global tree cover) to create binary masks from which to generate a balanced set of training data applied to a random forest classifier. For the land cover masks, stepwise threshold adjustments were applied to reflectance, spectral index values, and Euclidean distance layers, with 62 combinations evaluated. Global (all seven scenes) and regional (arid, tropics, and temperate) adaptive thresholds were computed. An annual 95th and 5th percentile NDVI composite was used to provide temporal corrections to the decision functions, and these corrections were compared against the original model. The accuracy assessment found that the regional adaptive thresholds for both the two-date land cover and the temporally corrected land cover could accurately map land cover type within nine-class (68.4% vs. 73.1%), six-class (79.8% vs. 82.8%), and five-class (80.1% vs. 85.1%) schemes. Lastly, the five-class and six-class models were compared with a manually labeled deep learning model (Esri), where they performed with similar accuracies (five classes: Esri 80.0 ± 3.4%, region corrected 85.1 ± 2.9%). The results highlight not only performance in line with an intensive deep learning approach, but also that reasonably accurate models can be created without a full annual time series of imagery. With the advancement of engineering techniques, underground shield tunneling projects have also started incorporating emerging technologies to monitor the forces and displacements during the construction and operation phases of shield tunnels. Monitoring devices installed on the tunnel segment components generate a large amount of data. However, due to various factors, data may be missing. Hence, the completion of the incomplete data is imperative to ensure the utmost safety of the engineering project. In this research, a missing data imputation technique utilizing Random Forest (RF) is introduced. The optimal combination of the number of decision trees, maximum depth, and number of features in the RF is determined by minimizing the Mean Squared Error (MSE). Subsequently, complete soil pressure data are artificially manipulated to create incomplete datasets with missing rates of 20%, 40%, and 60%. A comparative analysis of the imputation results using three methods—median, mean, and RF—reveals that this proposed method has the smallest imputation error. As the missing rate increases, the mean squared error of the Random Forest method and the other two methods also increases, with a maximum difference of about 70%. Accurate extraction of crop acreage is an important element of digital agriculture. This study uses Sentinel-2A, Sentinel-1, and DEM as data sources to construct a multidimensional feature dataset encompassing spectral features, vegetation index, texture features, terrain features, and radar features. The Relief-F algorithm is applied for feature selection to identify the optimal feature dataset. And the combination of deep learning and the random forest (RF) classification method is utilized to identify lilies in Qilihe District and Yuzhong County of Lanzhou City, obtain their planting structure, and analyze their spatial distribution characteristics in Gansu Province. The findings indicate that terrain features significantly contribute to ground object classification, with the highest classification accuracy when the number of features in the feature dataset is 36. The precision of the deep learning classification method exceeds that of RF, with an overall classification accuracy and kappa coefficient of 95.9% and 0.934, respectively. The Lanzhou lily planting area is 137.24 km2, and it primarily presents a concentrated and contiguous distribution feature. Understanding the association between subjective emotional experiences and physiological signals is of practical and theoretical significance. Previous psychophysiological studies have shown a linear relationship between dynamic emotional valence experiences and facial electromyography (EMG) activities. However, whether and how subjective emotional valence dynamics relate to facial EMG changes nonlinearly remains unknown. To investigate this issue, we re-analyzed the data of two previous studies that measured dynamic valence ratings and facial EMG of the corrugator supercilii and zygomatic major muscles from 50 participants who viewed emotional film clips. We employed multilinear regression analyses and two nonlinear machine learning (ML) models: random forest and long short-term memory. In cross-validation, these ML models outperformed linear regression in terms of the mean squared error and correlation coefficient. Interpretation of the random forest model using the SHapley Additive exPlanation tool revealed nonlinear and interactive associations between several EMG features and subjective valence dynamics. These findings suggest that nonlinear ML models can better fit the relationship between subjective emotional valence dynamics and facial EMG than conventional linear models and highlight a nonlinear and complex relationship. This study investigated the impact of auditory stimuli on muscular activation patterns using wearable surface electromyography (EMG) sensors. Employing four key muscles (Sternocleidomastoid Muscle (SCM), Cervical Erector Muscle (CEM), Quadricep Muscles (QMs), and Tibialis Muscle (TM)) and time domain features, we differentiated the effects of four interventions: silence, music, positive reinforcement, and negative reinforcement. The results demonstrated distinct muscle responses to the interventions, with the SCM and CEM being the most sensitive to changes and the TM being the most active and stimulus dependent. Post hoc analyses revealed significant intervention-specific activations in the CEM and TM for specific time points and intervention pairs, suggesting dynamic modulation and time-dependent integration. Multi-feature analysis identified both statistical and Hjorth features as potent discriminators, reflecting diverse adaptations in muscle recruitment, activation intensity, control, and signal dynamics. These features hold promise as potential biomarkers for monitoring muscle function in various clinical and research applications. Finally, muscle-specific Random Forest classification achieved the highest accuracy and Area Under the ROC Curve for the TM, indicating its potential for differentiating interventions with high precision. During the growing season, olives progress through nine different phenological stages, starting with bud development and ending with senescence. During their lifespan, olives undergo changes in their external color and chemical properties. To tackle these properties, we used hyperspectral imaging during the growing season of the olives. The objective of this study was to develop a lightweight model capable of identifying olives in the hyperspectral images using their spectral information. To achieve this goal, we utilized the hyperspectral imaging of olives while they were still on the tree and conducted this process throughout the entire growing season directly in the field without artificial light sources. The images were taken on-site every week from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. UTC to avoid light saturation and glitters. The data were analyzed using training and testing classifiers, including Decision Tree, Logistic Regression, Random Forest, and Support Vector Machine on labeled datasets. The Logistic Regression model showed the best balance between classification success rate, size, and inference time, achieving a 98% F1-score with less than 1 KB in parameters. A reduction in size was achieved by analyzing the wavelengths that were critical in the decision making, reducing the dimensionality of the hypercube. So, with this novel model, olives in a hyperspectral image can be identified during the season, providing data to enhance a farmer's decision-making process through further automatic applications. This study investigates the application of hyperspectral image space–spectral fusion technology in lithologic classification, using data from China's GF-5 and Europe's Sentinel-2A. The research focuses on the southern region of Tuanjie Peak in the Western Kunlun Range, comparing five space–spectral fusion methods: GSA, SFIM, CNMF, HySure, and NonRegSRNet. To comprehensively evaluate the effectiveness and applicability of these fusion methods, the study conducts a comprehensive assessment from three aspects: evaluation of fusion effects, lithologic classification experiments, and field validation. In the evaluation of fusion effects, the study uses an index analysis and comparison of spectral curves before and after fusion, concluding that the GSA fusion method performs the best. For lithologic classification, the Random Forest (RF) classification method is used, training with both area and point samples. The classification results from area sample training show significantly higher overall accuracy compared to point samples, aligning well with 1:50,000 scale geological maps. In field validation, the study employs on-site verification combined with microscopic identification and comparison of images with actual spectral fusion, finding that the classification results for the five lithologies are essentially consistent with field validation results. The "GSA+RF" method combination established in this paper, based on data from GF-5 and Sentinel-2A satellites, can provide technical support for lithological classification in similar high-altitude regions. To enhance the safety and reliability of fuel cell vehicles, a remote monitoring system based on 5th generation (5G) mobile networks and controller area networks (CANs) was designed, and a random forest (RF) algorithm for the fault diagnosis for eight typical malfunctions of its powertrain system was incorporated. Firstly, the information on the powertrain system was obtained through a 5G-based monitoring terminal, and the Alibaba Cloud IoT platform was utilized for data storage and remote monitoring. Secondly, a fault diagnosis model based on the RF algorithm was constructed for fault classification; its parameters were optimized with a genetic algorithm (GA), and it was applied on the Alibaba Cloud PAI platform. Finally, the performance of the proposed RF fault diagnosis model was evaluated by comparing it with three other classification models: random search conditioning, grid search conditioning, and Bayesian optimization. Results show that the model accuracy, F1 score, and kappa value of the optimized RF fault classification model are higher than the other three. The model achieves an F1 value of 97.77% in identifying multiple typical faults of the powertrain system, as validated by vehicle malfunction data. Commercial, high-tech upper limb prostheses offer a lot of functionality and are equipped with high-grade control mechanisms. However, they are relatively expensive and are not accessible to the majority of amputees. Therefore, more affordable, accessible, open-source, and 3D-printable alternatives are being developed. A commonly proposed approach to control these prostheses is to use bio-potentials generated by skeletal muscles, which can be measured using surface electromyography (sEMG). However, this control mechanism either lacks accuracy when a single sEMG sensor is used or involves the use of wires to connect to an array of multiple nodes, which hinders patients' movements. In order to mitigate these issues, we have developed a circular, wireless s-EMG array that is able to collect sEMG potentials on an array of electrodes that can be spread (not) uniformly around the circumference of a patient's arm. The modular sEMG system is combined with a Bluetooth Low Energy System on Chip, motion sensors, and a battery. We have benchmarked this system with a commercial, wired, state-of-the-art alternative and found an r = 0.98 (p < 0.01) Spearman correlation between the root-mean-squared (RMS) amplitude of sEMG measurements measured by both devices for the same set of 20 reference gestures, demonstrating that the system is accurate in measuring sEMG. Additionally, we have demonstrated that the RMS amplitudes of sEMG measurements between the different nodes within the array are uncorrelated, indicating that they contain independent information that can be used for higher accuracy in gesture recognition. We show this by training a random forest classifier that can distinguish between 6 gestures with an accuracy of 97%. (1) Background: In order to solve the problem of missing time-series data due to the influence of the acquisition system or external factors, a missing time-series data interpolation method based on random forest and a generative adversarial interpolation network is proposed. (2) Methods: First, the position of the missing part of the data is calibrated, and the trained random forest algorithm is used for the first data interpolation. The output value of the random forest algorithm is used as the input value of the generative adversarial interpolation network, and the generative adversarial interpolation network is used to calibrate the position. The data are interpolated for the second time, and the advantages of the two algorithms are combined to make the interpolation result closer to the true value. (3) Results: The filling effect of the algorithm is tested on a certain bearing data set, and the root mean square error (RMSE) is used to evaluate the interpolation results. The results show that the RMSE of the interpolation results based on the random forest and generative adversarial interpolation network algorithms in the case of single-segment and multi-segment missing data is only 0.0157, 0.0386, and 0.0527, which is better than the random forest algorithm, generative adversarial interpolation network algorithm, and K-nearest neighbor algorithm. Embedded system technologies are increasingly being incorporated into manufacturing, smart grid, industrial control systems, and transportation systems. However, the vast majority of today's embedded platforms lack the support of built-in security features which makes such systems highly vulnerable to a wide range of cyber-attacks. Specifically, they are vulnerable to malware injection code that targets the power distribution system of an ARM Cortex-M-based microcontroller chipset (ARM, Cambridge, UK). Through hardware exploitation of the clock-gating distribution system, an attacker is capable of disabling/activating various subsystems on the chip, compromising the reliability of the system during normal operation. This paper proposes the development of an Intrusion Detection System (IDS) capable of detecting clock-gating malware deployed on ARM Cortex-M-based embedded systems. To enhance the robustness and effectiveness of our approach, we fully implemented, tested, and compared six IDSs, each employing different methodologies. These include IDSs based on K-Nearest Classifier, Random Forest, Logistic Regression, Decision Tree, Naive Bayes, and Stochastic Gradient Descent. Each of these IDSs was designed to identify and categorize various variants of clock-gating malware deployed on the system. We have analyzed the performance of these IDSs in terms of detection accuracy against various types of clock-gating malware injection code. Power consumption data collected from the chipset during normal operation and malware code injection attacks were used for models' training and validation. Our simulation results showed that the proposed IDSs, particularly those based on K-Nearest Classifier and Logistic Regression, were capable of achieving high detection rates, with some reaching a detection rate of 0.99. Sedentary behaviour (SB) and physical activity (PA) have been shown to be independent modulators of healthy ageing. We thus investigated the impact of activity monitor placement on the accuracy of detecting SB and PA in older adults, as well as a novel random forest algorithm trained on data from older persons. Four monitor types (ActiGraph wGT3X-BT, ActivPAL3c VT, GENEActiv Original, and DynaPort MM+) were simultaneously worn on five anatomical sites during ten different activities by a sample of twenty older adults (70.0 (12.0) years; 10 women). The results indicated that collecting metabolic equivalent (MET) data for 60 s provided the most representative results, minimising variability. In addition, thigh-worn monitors, including ActivPAL, Random Forest, and Sedentary Sphere—Thigh, exhibited superior performance in classifying SB, with balanced accuracies ≥ 94.2%. Other monitors, such as ActiGraph, DynaPort MM+, and GENEActiv Sedentary Sphere—Wrist, demonstrated lower performance. ActivPAL and GENEActiv Random Forest outperformed other monitors in participant-specific balanced accuracies for SB classification. Only thigh-worn monitors achieved acceptable overall balanced accuracies (≥80.0%) for SB, standing, and medium-to-vigorous PA classifications. Photovoltaic (PV) power prediction plays a critical role amid the accelerating adoption of renewable energy sources. This paper introduces a bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) deep learning (DL) model designed for forecasting photovoltaic power one hour ahead. The dataset under examination originates from a small PV installation located at the Polytechnic School of the University of Alcala. To improve the quality of historical data and optimize model performance, a robust data preprocessing algorithm is implemented. The BiLSTM model is synergistically combined with a Bayesian optimization algorithm (BOA) to fine-tune its primary hyperparameters, thereby enhancing its predictive efficacy. The performance of the proposed model is evaluated across diverse meteorological and seasonal conditions. In deterministic forecasting, the findings indicate its superiority over alternative models employed in this research domain, specifically a multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural network model and a random forest (RF) ensemble model. Compared with the MLP and RF reference models, the proposed model achieves reductions in the normalized mean absolute error (nMAE) of 75.03% and 77.01%, respectively, demonstrating its effectiveness in this type of prediction. Moreover, interval prediction utilizing the bootstrap resampling method is conducted, with the acquired prediction intervals carefully adjusted to meet the desired confidence levels, thereby enhancing the robustness and flexibility of the predictions. Gait analysis has been studied over the last few decades as the best way to objectively assess the technical outcome of a procedure designed to improve gait. The treating physician can understand the type of gait problem, gain insight into the etiology, and find the best treatment with gait analysis. The gait parameters are the kinematics, including the temporal and spatial parameters, and lack the activity information of skeletal muscles. Thus, the gait analysis measures not only the three-dimensional temporal and spatial graphs of kinematics but also the surface electromyograms (sEMGs) of the lower limbs. Now, the shoe-worn GaitUp Physilog® wearable inertial sensors can easily measure the gait parameters when subjects are walking on the general ground. However, it cannot measure muscle activity. The aim of this study is to measure the gait parameters using the sEMGs of the lower limbs. A self-made wireless device was used to measure the sEMGs from the vastus lateralis and gastrocnemius muscles of the left and right feet. Twenty young female subjects with a skeletal muscle index (SMI) below 5.7 kg/m2 were recruited for this study and examined by the InBody 270 instrument. Four parameters of sEMG were used to estimate 23 gait parameters. They were measured using the GaitUp Physilog® wearable inertial sensors with three machine learning models, including random forest (RF), decision tree (DT), and XGBoost. The results show that 14 gait parameters could be well-estimated, and their correlation coefficients are above 0.800. The use of low-cost sensors (LCSs) for the mobile monitoring of oil and gas emissions is an understudied application of low-cost air quality monitoring devices. To assess the efficacy of low-cost sensors as a screening tool for the mobile monitoring of fugitive methane emissions stemming from well sites in eastern Colorado, we colocated an array of low-cost sensors (XPOD) with a reference grade methane monitor (Aeris Ultra) on a mobile monitoring vehicle from 15 August through 27 September 2023. Fitting our low-cost sensor data with a bootstrap and aggregated random forest model, we found a high correlation between the reference and XPOD CH4 concentrations (r = 0.719) and a low experimental error (RMSD = 0.3673 ppm). Other calibration models, including multilinear regression and artificial neural networks (ANN), were either unable to distinguish individual methane spikes above baseline or had a significantly elevated error (RMSDANN = 0.4669 ppm) when compared to the random forest model. Using out-of-bag predictor permutations, we found that sensors that showed the highest correlation with methane displayed the greatest significance in our random forest model. As we reduced the percentage of colocation data employed in the random forest model, errors did not significantly increase until a specific threshold (50 percent of total calibration data). Using a peakfinding algorithm, we found that our model was able to predict 80 percent of methane spikes above 2.5 ppm throughout the duration of our field campaign, with a false response rate of 35 percent. In this study, we propose an augmentation method for machine learning based on relabeling data in caregiving and nursing staff indoor localization with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology. Indoor localization is used to monitor staff-to-patient assistance in caregiving and to gain insights into workload management. However, improving accuracy is challenging when there is a limited amount of data available for training. In this paper, we propose a data augmentation method to reuse the Received Signal Strength (RSS) from different beacons by relabeling to the locations with less samples, resolving data imbalance. Standard deviation and Kullback–Leibler divergence between minority and majority classes are used to measure signal pattern to find matching beacons to relabel. By matching beacons between classes, two variations of relabeling are implemented, specifically full and partial matching. The performance is evaluated using the real-world dataset we collected for five days in a nursing care facility installed with 25 BLE beacons. A Random Forest model is utilized for location recognition, and performance is compared using the weighted F1-score to account for class imbalance. By increasing the beacon data with our proposed relabeling method for data augmentation, we achieve a higher minority class F1-score compared to augmentation with Random Sampling, Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) and Adaptive Synthetic Sampling (ADASYN). Our proposed method utilizes collected beacon data by leveraging majority class samples. Full matching demonstrated a 6 to 8% improvement from the original baseline overall weighted F1-score. Participatory exposure research, which tracks behaviour and assesses exposure to stressors like air pollution, traditionally relies on time-activity diaries. This study introduces a novel approach, employing machine learning (ML) to empower laypersons in human activity recognition (HAR), aiming to reduce dependence on manual recording by leveraging data from wearable sensors. Recognising complex activities such as smoking and cooking presents unique challenges due to specific environmental conditions. In this research, we combined wearable environment/ambient and wrist-worn activity/biometric sensors for complex activity recognition in an urban stressor exposure study, measuring parameters like particulate matter concentrations, temperature, and humidity. Two groups, Group H (88 individuals) and Group M (18 individuals), wore the devices and manually logged their activities hourly and minutely, respectively. Prioritising accessibility and inclusivity, we selected three classification algorithms: k-nearest neighbours (IBk), decision trees (J48), and random forests (RF), based on: (1) proven efficacy in existing literature, (2) understandability and transparency for laypersons, (3) availability on user-friendly platforms like WEKA, and (4) efficiency on basic devices such as office laptops or smartphones. Accuracy improved with finer temporal resolution and detailed activity categories. However, when compared to other published human activity recognition research, our accuracy rates, particularly for less complex activities, were not as competitive. Misclassifications were higher for vague activities (resting, playing), while well-defined activities (smoking, cooking, running) had few errors. Including environmental sensor data increased accuracy for all activities, especially playing, smoking, and running. Future work should consider exploring other explainable algorithms available on diverse tools and platforms. The accurate measurement of soil organic matter (SOM) is vital for maintaining soil quality. We present an innovative model for SOM prediction by integrating spectral and profile features. We use PCA, Lasso, and SCARS methods to extract important spectral features and combine them with profile data. This hybrid approach significantly improves SOM prediction across various models, including Random Forest, ExtraTrees, and XGBoost, boosting the coefficient of determination (R2) by up to 26%. Notably, the ExtraTrees model, enriched with PCA-extracted features, achieves the highest accuracy with an R2 of 0.931 and an RMSE of 0.068. Compared with single-feature models, this approach improves the R2 by 17% and 26% for PCA features of full-band spectra and profile features, respectively. Our findings highlight the potential of feature integration, especially the ExtraTrees model with PCA-extracted features and profile features, as a stable and accurate tool for SOM prediction in extensive study areas. Human-to-human communication via the computer is mainly carried out using a keyboard or microphone. In the field of virtual reality (VR), where the most immersive experience possible is desired, the use of a keyboard contradicts this goal, while the use of a microphone is not always desirable (e.g., silent commands during task-force training) or simply not possible (e.g., if the user has hearing loss). Data gloves help to increase immersion within VR, as they correspond to our natural interaction. At the same time, they offer the possibility of accurately capturing hand shapes, such as those used in non-verbal communication (e.g., thumbs up, okay gesture, ...) and in sign language. In this paper, we present a hand-shape recognition system using Manus Prime X data gloves, including data acquisition, data preprocessing, and data classification to enable nonverbal communication within VR. We investigate the impact on accuracy and classification time of using an outlier detection and a feature selection approach in our data preprocessing. To obtain a more generalized approach, we also studied the impact of artificial data augmentation, i.e., we created new artificial data from the recorded and filtered data to augment the training data set. With our approach, 56 different hand shapes could be distinguished with an accuracy of up to 93.28%. With a reduced number of 27 hand shapes, an accuracy of up to 95.55% could be achieved. The voting meta-classifier (VL2) proved to be the most accurate, albeit slowest, classifier. A good alternative is random forest (RF), which was even able to achieve better accuracy values in a few cases and was generally somewhat faster. outlier detection was proven to be an effective approach, especially in improving the classification time. Sensor-based human activity recognition is now well developed, but there are still many challenges, such as insufficient accuracy in the identification of similar activities. To overcome this issue, we collect data during similar human activities using three-axis acceleration and gyroscope sensors. We developed a model capable of classifying similar activities of human behavior, and the effectiveness and generalization capabilities of this model are evaluated. Based on the standardization and normalization of data, we consider the inherent similarities of human activity behaviors by introducing the multi-layer classifier model. The first layer of the proposed model is a random forest model based on the XGBoost feature selection algorithm. In the second layer of this model, similar human activities are extracted by applying the kernel Fisher discriminant analysis (KFDA) with feature mapping. Then, the support vector machine (SVM) model is applied to classify similar human activities. Our model is experimentally evaluated, and it is also applied to four benchmark datasets: UCI DSA, UCI HAR, WISDM, and IM-WSHA. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves recognition accuracies of 97.69%, 97.92%, 98.12%, and 90.6%, indicating excellent recognition performance. Additionally, we performed K-fold cross-validation on the random forest model and utilized ROC curves for the SVM classifier to assess the model's generalization ability. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a powerful technology that connect its users worldwide with everyday objects without any human interference. On the contrary, the utilization of IoT infrastructure in different fields such as smart homes, healthcare and transportation also raises potential risks of attacks and anomalies caused through node security breaches. Therefore, an Intrusion Detection System (IDS) must be developed to largely scale up the security of IoT technologies. This paper proposes a Logistic Regression based Ensemble Classifier (LREC) for effective IDS implementation. The LREC combines AdaBoost and Random Forest (RF) to develop an effective classifier using the iterative ensemble approach. The issue of data imbalance is avoided by using the adaptive synthetic sampling (ADASYN) approach. Further, inappropriate features are eliminated using recursive feature elimination (RFE). There are two different datasets, namely BoT-IoT and TON-IoT, for analyzing the proposed RFE-LREC method. The RFE-LREC is analyzed on the basis of accuracy, recall, precision, F1-score, false alarm rate (FAR), receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, true negative rate (TNR) and Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC). The existing researches, namely NetFlow-based feature set, TL-IDS and LSTM, are used to compare with the RFE-LREC. In this work, cost-sensitive decision support was developed. Using Batch Data Analytics (BDA) methods of the batch data structure and feature accommodation, the batch process property and sensor data can be accommodated. The batch data structure organises the batch processes' data, and the feature accommodation approach derives statistics from the time series, consequently aligning the time series with the other features. Three machine learning classifiers were implemented for comparison: Logistic Regression (LR), Random Forest Classifier (RFC), and Support Vector Machine (SVM). It is possible to filter out the low-probability predictions by leveraging the classifiers' probability estimations. Consequently, the decision support has a trade-off between accuracy and coverage. Cost-sensitive learning was used to implement a cost matrix, which further aggregates the accuracy–coverage trade into cost metrics. Also, two scenarios were implemented for accommodating out-of-coverage batches. The batch is discarded in one scenario, and the other is processed. The Random Forest classifier was shown to outperform the other classifiers and, compared to the baseline scenario, had a relative cost of 26%. The recent impact of COVID-19, as a contagious disease, led researchers to focus on designing and fabricating personal healthcare devices and systems. With the help of wearable sensors, sensing and communication technologies, and recommendation modules, personal healthcare systems were designed for ease of use. More specifically, personal healthcare systems were designed to provide recommendations for maintaining a safe distance and avoiding contagious disease spread after the COVID-19 pandemic. The personal recommendations are analyzed based on the wearable sensor signals and their consistency in sensing. This consistency varies with human movements or other activities that hike/cease the sensor values abruptly for a short period. Therefore, a consistency-focused recommendation system (CRS) for personal healthcare (PH) was designed in this research. The hardware sensing intervals for the system are calibrated per the conventional specifications from which abrupt changes can be observed. The changes are analyzed for their saturation and fluctuations observed from neighbors within the threshold distance. The saturation and fluctuation classifications are performed using random forest learning to differentiate the above data from the previously sensed healthy data. In this process, the saturated data and consistency data provide safety recommendations for the moving user. The consistency is verified for a series of intervals for the fluctuating sensed data. This alerts the user if the threshold distance for a contagious disease is violated. Understanding and monitoring the ecological quality of coastal waters is crucial for preserving marine ecosystems. Eutrophication is one of the major problems affecting the ecological state of coastal marine waters. For this reason, the control of the trophic conditions of aquatic ecosystems is needed for the evaluation of their ecological quality. This study leverages space-based Sentinel-3 Ocean and Land Color Instrument imagery (OLCI) to assess the ecological quality of Mediterranean coastal waters using the Trophic Index (TRIX) key indicator. In particular, we explore the feasibility of coupling remote sensing and machine learning techniques to estimate the TRIX levels in the Ligurian, Tyrrhenian, and Ionian coastal regions of Italy. Our research reveals distinct geographical patterns in TRIX values across the study area, with some regions exhibiting eutrophic conditions near estuaries and others showing oligotrophic characteristics. We employ the Random Forest Regression algorithm, optimizing calibration parameters to predict TRIX levels. Feature importance analysis highlights the significance of latitude, longitude, and specific spectral bands in TRIX prediction. A final statistical assessment validates our model's performance, demonstrating a moderate level of error (MAE of 0.51) and explanatory power (R2 of 0.37). These results highlight the potential of Sentinel-3 OLCI imagery in assessing ecological quality, contributing to our understanding of coastal water ecology. They also underscore the importance of merging remote sensing and machine learning in environmental monitoring and management. The core body temperature serves as a pivotal physiological metric indicative of sow health, with rectal thermometry prevailing as a prevalent method for estimating core body temperature within sow farms. Nonetheless, employing contact thermometers for rectal temperature measurement proves to be time-intensive, labor-demanding, and hygienically suboptimal. Addressing the issues of minimal automation and temperature measurement accuracy in sow temperature monitoring, this study introduces an automatic temperature monitoring method for sows, utilizing a segmentation network amalgamating YOLOv5s and DeepLabv3+, complemented by an adaptive genetic algorithm-random forest (AGA-RF) regression algorithm. In developing the sow vulva segmenter, YOLOv5s was synergized with DeepLabv3+, and the CBAM attention mechanism and MobileNetv2 network were incorporated to ensure precise localization and expedited segmentation of the vulva region. Within the temperature prediction module, an optimized regression algorithm derived from the random forest algorithm facilitated the construction of a temperature inversion model, predicated upon environmental parameters and vulva temperature, for the rectal temperature prediction in sows. Testing revealed that vulvar segmentation IoU was 91.50%, while the predicted MSE, MAE, and R2 for rectal temperature were 0.114 °C, 0.191 °C, and 0.845, respectively. In this paper, an approach to perform leak state detection and size identification for industrial fluid pipelines with an acoustic emission (AE) activity intensity index curve (AIIC), using b-value and a random forest (RF), is proposed. Initially, the b-value was calculated from pre-processed AE data, which was then utilized to construct AIICs. The AIIC presents a robust description of AE intensity, especially for detecting the leaking state, even with the complication of the multi-source problem of AE events (AEEs), in which there are other sources, rather than just leaking, contributing to the AE activity. In addition, it shows the capability to not just discriminate between normal and leaking states, but also to distinguish different leak sizes. To calculate the probability of a state change from normal condition to leakage, a changepoint detection method, using a Bayesian ensemble, was utilized. After the leak is detected, size identification is performed by feeding the AIIC to the RF. The experimental results were compared with two cutting-edge methods under different scenarios with various pressure levels and leak sizes, and the proposed method outperformed both the earlier algorithms in terms of accuracy. Wearable devices have become ubiquitous, collecting rich temporal data that offers valuable insights into human activities, health monitoring, and behavior analysis. Leveraging these data, researchers have developed innovative approaches to classify and predict time-based patterns and events in human life. Time-based techniques allow the capture of intricate temporal dependencies, which is the nature of the data coming from wearable devices. This paper focuses on predicting well-being factors, such as stress, anxiety, and positive and negative affect, on the Tesserae dataset collected from office workers. We examine the performance of different methodologies, including deep-learning architectures, LSTM, ensemble techniques, Random Forest (RF), and XGBoost, and compare their performances for time-based and non-time-based versions. In time-based versions, we investigate the effect of previous records of well-being factors on the upcoming ones. The overall results show that time-based LSTM performs the best among conventional (non-time-based) RF, XGBoost, and LSTM. The performance even increases when we consider a more extended previous period, in this case, 3 past-days rather than 1 past-day to predict the next day. Furthermore, we explore the corresponding biomarkers for each well-being factor using feature ranking. The obtained rankings are compatible with the psychological literature. Indoor human action recognition, essential across various applications, faces significant challenges such as orientation constraints and identification limitations, particularly in systems reliant on non-contact devices. Self-occlusions and non-line of sight (NLOS) situations are important representatives among them. To address these challenges, this paper presents a novel system utilizing dual Kinect V2, enhanced by an advanced Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and sophisticated ensemble learning techniques, tailor-made to handle self-occlusions and NLOS situations. Our main works are as follows: (1) a data-adaptive adjustment mechanism, anchored on localization outcomes, to mitigate self-occlusion in dynamic orientations; (2) the adoption of sophisticated ensemble learning techniques, including a Chirp acoustic signal identification method, based on an optimized fuzzy c-means-AdaBoost algorithm, for improving positioning accuracy in NLOS contexts; and (3) an amalgamation of the Random Forest model and bat algorithm, providing innovative action identification strategies for intricate scenarios. We conduct extensive experiments, and our results show that the proposed system augments human action recognition precision by a substantial 30.25%, surpassing the benchmarks set by current state-of-the-art works. To clarify the reasons for inaccurate fire detection in aircraft cargo holds, this article depicts research from the perspective of a single type of sensor detection. In terms of fire smoke, we select dual-wavelength photoelectric smoke sensors for fire-data collection and a genetic algorithm to optimize the classification and detection of random forest fires. From the perspective of fire CO concentration, we use PSO-LSTM to train a CO concentration compensation model to reduce sensor measurement errors. Research is then conducted from the perspective of various types of sensor detection, using the improved BP-AdaBoost algorithm to train a fire-detection model and achieve the high-precision identification of complex environments and fire situations. The utilization of multiscale entropy methods to characterize vibration signals has proven to be promising in intelligent diagnosis of mechanical equipment. However, in the current multiscale entropy methods, only the information in the low-frequency range is utilized and the information in the high-frequency range is discarded. In order to take full advantage of the information, in this paper, a fault feature extraction method utilizing the bidirectional composite coarse-graining process with fuzzy dispersion entropy is proposed. To avoid the redundancy of the full frequency range feature information, the Random Forest algorithm combined with the Maximum Relevance Minimum Redundancy algorithm is applied to feature selection. Together with the K-nearest neighbor classifier, a rolling bearing intelligent diagnosis framework is constructed. The effectiveness of the proposed framework is evaluated by a numerical simulation and two experimental examples. The validation results demonstrate that the extracted features by the proposed method are highly sensitive to the bearing health conditions compared with hierarchical fuzzy dispersion entropy, composite multiscale fuzzy dispersion entropy, multiscale fuzzy dispersion entropy, multiscale dispersion entropy, multiscale permutation entropy, and multiscale sample entropy. In addition, the proposed method is able to identify the fault categories and health states of rolling bearings simultaneously. This paper proposes a portable wireless transmission system for the multi-channel acquisition of surface electromyography (EMG) signals. Because EMG signals have great application value in psychotherapy and human–computer interaction, this system is designed to acquire reliable, real-time facial-muscle-movement signals. Electrodes placed on the surface of a facial-muscle source can inhibit facial-muscle movement due to weight, size, etc., and we propose to solve this problem by placing the electrodes at the periphery of the face to acquire the signals. The multi-channel approach allows this system to detect muscle activity in 16 regions simultaneously. Wireless transmission (Wi-Fi) technology is employed to increase the flexibility of portable applications. The sampling rate is 1 KHz and the resolution is 24 bit. To verify the reliability and practicality of this system, we carried out a comparison with a commercial device and achieved a correlation coefficient of more than 70% on the comparison metrics. Next, to test the system's utility, we placed 16 electrodes around the face for the recognition of five facial movements. Three classifiers, random forest, support vector machine (SVM) and backpropagation neural network (BPNN), were used for the recognition of the five facial movements, in which random forest proved to be practical by achieving a classification accuracy of 91.79%. It is also demonstrated that electrodes placed around the face can still achieve good recognition of facial movements, making the landing of wearable EMG signal-acquisition devices more feasible. Smart agriculture utilizes Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to enable low-cost electrical conductivity (EC) sensors to support farming intelligence. Due to aging and changes in weather and soil conditions, EC sensors are prone to long-term drift over years of operation. Therefore, regular recalibration is necessary to ensure data accuracy. In most existing solutions, an EC sensor is calibrated by using the standard sensor to build the calibration table. This paper proposes SensorTalk3, an ensemble approach of machine learning models including XGBOOST and Random Forest, which can be executed at an edge device (e.g., Raspberry Pi) without GPU acceleration. Our study indicates that the soil information (both temperature and moisture sensor data) plays an important role in SensorTalk3, which significantly outperforms the existing calibration approaches. The MAPE of SensorTalk3 can be as low as 1.738%, compared to the 7.792% error of the original sensor. Our study indicates that when the errors of uncalibrated moisture and temperature sensors are not larger than 8.3%, SensorTalk3 can accurately calibrate EC. SensorTalk3 can perform model training during data collection at the edge node. When all training data are collected, AI training is also finished at the edge node. Such an AI training approach has not been found in existing edge AI approaches. We also proposed the dual-sensor detection solution to determine when to conduct recalibration. The overhead of this solution is less than twice the optimal detection scenario (which cannot be achieved practically). If the two non-standard sensors are homogeneous and stable, then the optimal detection scenario can be approached. Conventional methods require training calibration AI models in the cloud. However, SensorTalk3 introduces a significant advancement by enabling on-site transfer learning in the edge node. Given the abundance of farming sensors deployed in the fields, performing local transfer learning using low-cost edge nodes proves to be a more cost-effective solution for farmers. Sensor Data Fusion (SDT) algorithms and models have been widely used in diverse applications. One of the main challenges of SDT includes how to deal with heterogeneous and complex datasets with different formats. The present work utilised both homogenous and heterogeneous datasets to propose a novel SDT framework. It compares data mining-based fusion software packages such as RapidMiner Studio, Anaconda, Weka, and Orange, and proposes a data fusion framework suitable for in-home applications. A total of 574 privacy-friendly (binary) images and 1722 datasets gleaned from thermal and Radar sensing solutions, respectively, were fused using the software packages on instances of homogeneous and heterogeneous data aggregation. Experimental results indicated that the proposed fusion framework achieved an average Classification Accuracy of 84.7% and 95.7% on homogeneous and heterogeneous datasets, respectively, with the help of data mining and machine learning models such as Naïve Bayes, Decision Tree, Neural Network, Random Forest, Stochastic Gradient Descent, Support Vector Machine, and CN2 Induction. Further evaluation of the Sensor Data Fusion framework based on cross-validation of features indicated average values of 94.4% for Classification Accuracy, 95.7% for Precision, and 96.4% for Recall. Selecting training samples is crucial in remote sensing image classification. In this paper, we selected three images—Sentinel-2, GF-1, and Landsat 8—and employed three methods for selecting training samples: grouping selection, entropy-based selection, and direct selection. We then used the selected training samples to train three supervised classification models—random forest (RF), support-vector machine (SVM), and k-nearest neighbor (KNN)—and evaluated the classification results of the three images. According to the experimental results, the three classification models performed similarly. Compared with the entropy-based method, the grouping selection method achieved higher classification accuracy using fewer samples. In addition, the grouping selection method outperformed the direct selection method with the same number of samples. Therefore, the grouping selection method performed the best. The wheels of railway vehicles are of paramount importance in relation to railroad operations and safety. Currently, the management of railway vehicle wheels is restricted to post-event inspections of the wheels whenever physical phenomena, such as abnormal vibrations and noise, occur during the operation of railway vehicles. To address this issue, this paper proposes a method for predicting abnormalities in railway wheels in advance and enhancing the learning and prediction performance of machine learning algorithms. Data were collected during the operation of Line 4 of the Busan Metro in South Korea by directly attaching sensors to the railway vehicles. Through the analysis of key factors in the collected data, factors that can be used for tire condition classification were derived. Additionally, through data distribution analysis and correlation analysis, factors for classifying tire conditions were identified. As a result, it was determined that the z-axis of acceleration has a significant impact, and machine learning techniques such as SVM (Linear Kernel, RBF Kernel) and Random Forest were utilized based on acceleration data to classify tire conditions into in-service and defective states. Early onset ataxia (EOA) and developmental coordination disorder (DCD) both affect cerebellar functioning in children, making the clinical distinction challenging. We here aim to derive meaningful features from quantitative SARA-gait data (i.e., the gait test of the scale for the assessment and rating of ataxia (SARA)) to classify EOA and DCD patients and typically developing (CTRL) children with better explainability than previous classification approaches. We collected data from 18 EOA, 14 DCD and 29 CTRL children, while executing both SARA gait tests. Inertial measurement units were used to acquire movement data, and a gait model was employed to derive meaningful features. We used a random forest classifier on 36 extracted features, leave-one-out-cross-validation and a synthetic oversampling technique to distinguish between the three groups. Classification accuracy, probabilities of classification and feature relevance were obtained. The mean classification accuracy was 62.9% for EOA, 85.5% for DCD and 94.5% for CTRL participants. Overall, the random forest algorithm correctly classified 82.0% of the participants, which was slightly better than clinical assessment (73.0%). The classification resulted in a mean precision of 0.78, mean recall of 0.70 and mean F1 score of 0.74. The most relevant features were related to the range of the hip flexion–extension angle for gait, and to movement variability for tandem gait. Our results suggest that classification, employing features representing different aspects of movement during gait and tandem gait, may provide an insightful tool for the differential diagnoses of EOA, DCD and typically developing children. The analysis and recognition of sign languages are currently active fields of research focused on sign recognition. Various approaches differ in terms of analysis methods and the devices used for sign acquisition. Traditional methods rely on video analysis or spatial positioning data calculated using motion capture tools. In contrast to these conventional recognition and classification approaches, electromyogram (EMG) signals, which measure muscle electrical activity, offer potential technology for detecting gestures. These EMG-based approaches have recently gained attention due to their advantages. This prompted us to conduct a comprehensive study on the methods, approaches, and projects utilizing EMG sensors for sign language handshape recognition. In this paper, we provided an overview of the sign language recognition field through a literature review, with the objective of offering an in-depth review of the most significant techniques. These techniques were categorized in this article based on their respective methodologies. The survey discussed the progress and challenges in sign language recognition systems based on surface electromyography (sEMG) signals. These systems have shown promise but face issues like sEMG data variability and sensor placement. Multiple sensors enhance reliability and accuracy. Machine learning, including deep learning, is used to address these challenges. Common classifiers in sEMG-based sign language recognition include SVM, ANN, CNN, KNN, HMM, and LSTM. While SVM and ANN are widely used, random forest and KNN have shown better performance in some cases. A multilayer perceptron neural network achieved perfect accuracy in one study. CNN, often paired with LSTM, ranks as the third most popular classifier and can achieve exceptional accuracy, reaching up to 99.6% when utilizing both EMG and IMU data. LSTM is highly regarded for handling sequential dependencies in EMG signals, making it a critical component of sign language recognition systems. In summary, the survey highlights the prevalence of SVM and ANN classifiers but also suggests the effectiveness of alternative classifiers like random forests and KNNs.
