The Internet of Medical Things (IoMTs) is a network of connected medical equipment such as pacemakers, prosthetics, and smartwatches. Utilizing the IoMT-based system, a huge amount of data is generated, offering experts a valuable resource for tasks such as prediction, real-time monitoring, and diagnosis. To do so, the patient's health data must be transferred to database storage for processing because of the limitations of the storage and computation capabilities of IoMT devices. Consequently, concerns regarding security and privacy can arise due to the limited control over the transmitted information and reliance on wireless transmission, which leaves the network vulnerable to several kinds of attacks. Motivated by this, in this study, we aim to build and improve an efficient intrusion detection system (IDS) for IoMT networks. The proposed IDS leverages tree-based machine learning classifiers combined with filter-based feature selection techniques to enhance detection accuracy and efficiency. The proposed model is used for monitoring and identifying unauthorized or malicious activities within medical devices and networks. To optimize performance and minimize computation costs, we utilize Mutual Information (MI) and XGBoost as filter-based feature selection methods. Then, to reduce the number of the chosen features selected, we apply a mathematical set (intersection) to extract the common features. The proposed method can detect intruders while data are being transferred, allowing for the accurate and efficient analysis of healthcare data at the network's edge. The system's performance is assessed using the CICIDS2017 dataset. We evaluate the proposed model in terms of accuracy, F1 score, recall, precision, true positive rate, and false positive rate. The proposed model achieves 98.79% accuracy and a low false alarm rate 0.007 FAR on the CICIDS2017 dataset according to the experimental results. While this study focuses on binary classification for intrusion detection, we are planning to build a multi-classification approach for future work which will be able to not only detect the attacks but also categorize them. Additionally, we will consider using our proposed feature selection technique for different ML classifiers and evaluate the model's performance empirically in real-world IoMT scenarios. For many years, energy monitoring at the most disaggregate level has been mainly sought through the idea of Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM). Developing a practical application of this concept in the residential sector can be impeded by the technical characteristics of case studies. Accordingly, several databases, mainly from Europe and the US, have been publicly released to enable basic research to address NILM issues raised by their challenging features. Nevertheless, the resultant enhancements are limited to the properties of these datasets. Such a restriction has caused NILM studies to overlook residential scenarios related to geographically-specific regions and existent practices to face unexplored situations. This paper presents applied research on NILM in Quebec residences to reveal its barriers to feasible implementations. It commences with a concise discussion about a successful NILM idea to highlight its essential requirements. Afterward, it provides a comparative statistical analysis to represent the specificity of the case study by exploiting real data. Subsequently, this study proposes a combinatory approach to load identification that utilizes the promise of sub-meter smart technologies and integrates the intrusive aspect of load monitoring with the non-intrusive one to alleviate NILM difficulties in Quebec residences. A load disaggregation technique is suggested to manifest these complications based on supervised and unsupervised machine learning designs. The former is aimed at extracting overall heating demand from the aggregate one while the latter is designed for disaggregating the residual load. The results demonstrate that geographically-dependent cases create electricity consumption scenarios that can deteriorate the performance of existing NILM methods. This study introduces a novel method for detecting the post-COVID state using ECG data. By leveraging a convolutional neural network, we identify "cardiospikes" present in the ECG data of individuals who have experienced a COVID-19 infection. With a test sample, we achieve an 87 percent accuracy in detecting these cardiospikes. Importantly, our research demonstrates that these observed cardiospikes are not artifacts of hardware–software signal distortions, but rather possess an inherent nature, indicating their potential as markers for COVID-specific modes of heart rhythm regulation. Additionally, we conduct blood parameter measurements on recovered COVID-19 patients and construct corresponding profiles. Recently, various sophisticated methods, including machine learning and artificial intelligence, have been employed to examine health-related data. Medical professionals are acquiring enhanced diagnostic and treatment abilities by utilizing machine learning applications in the healthcare domain. Medical data have been used by many researchers to detect diseases and identify patterns. In the current literature, there are very few studies that address machine learning algorithms to improve healthcare data accuracy and efficiency. We examined the effectiveness of machine learning algorithms in improving time series healthcare metrics for heart rate data transmission (accuracy and efficiency). In this paper, we reviewed several machine learning algorithms in healthcare applications. After a comprehensive overview and investigation of supervised and unsupervised machine learning algorithms, we also demonstrated time series tasks based on past values (along with reviewing their feasibility for both small and large datasets). In an indoor positioning system (IPS), transfer learning (TL) methods are commonly used to predict the location of mobile devices under the assumption that all training instances of the target domain are given in advance. However, this assumption has been criticized for its shortcomings in dealing with the problem of signal distribution variations, especially in a dynamic indoor environment. The reasons are: collecting a sufficient number of training instances is costly, the training instances may arrive online, the feature spaces of the target and source domains may be different, and negative knowledge may be transferred in the case of a redundant source domain. In this work, we proposed an online heterogeneous transfer learning (OHetTLAL) algorithm for IPS-based RSS fingerprinting to improve the positioning performance in the target domain by fusing both source and target domain knowledge. The source domain was refined based on the target domain to avoid negative knowledge transfer. The co-occurrence measure of the feature spaces ( C m i p ) was used to derive the homogeneous new feature spaces, and the features with higher weight values were selected for training the classifier because they could positively affect the location prediction of the target. Thus, the objective function was minimized over the new feature spaces. Extensive experiments were conducted on two real-world scenarios of datasets, and the predictive power of the different modeling techniques were evaluated for predicting the location of a mobile device. The results have revealed that the proposed algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art methods for fingerprint-based indoor positioning and is found robust to changing environments. This article discusses the use of a handheld electronic nose to obtain information on the presence of some aromatic defects in natural cork stoppers, such as haloanisoles, alkylmethoxypyrazines, and ketones. Typical concentrations of these compounds (from 5 to 120 ng in the cork samples) have been measured. Two electronic nose prototypes have been developed as an instrumentation system comprise of eight commercial gas sensors to perform two sets of experiments. In the first experiment, a quantitative approach was used whist in the second experiment a qualitative one was used. Machine learning algorithms such as k-nearest neighbors and artificial neural networks have been used in order to test the performance of the system to detect cork defects. The use of this system tries to improve the current aromatic defect detection process in the cork stopper industry, which is done by gas chromatography or human test panels. New computational methods have emerged through science and technology to support the diagnosis of mental health disorders. Predictive models developed from machine learning algorithms can identify disorders such as schizophrenia and support clinical decision making. This research aims to compare the performance of machine learning algorithms: Decision Tree, AdaBoost, Random Forest, Naïve Bayes, Support Vector Machine, and k-Nearest Neighbor in the prediction of hospitalized patients with schizophrenia. The data set used in the study contains a total of 11,884 electronic admission records corresponding to 6933 patients with various mental health disorders; these records belong to the acute units of 11 public hospitals in a region of Spain. Of the total, 5968 records correspond to patients diagnosed with schizophrenia (3002 patients) and 5916 records correspond to patients with other mental health disorders (3931 patients). The results recommend Random Forest with the best accuracy of 72.7%. Furthermore, this algorithm presents 79.6%, 72.8%, 72.7%, and 72.7% for AUC, precision, F1-Score, and recall, respectively. The results obtained suggest that the use of machine learning algorithms can classify hospitalized patients with schizophrenia in this population and help in the hospital management of this type of disorder, to reduce the costs associated with hospitalization. This paper describes a wearable Fall Detection System (FDS) based on a body-area network consisting of four nodes provided with inertial sensors and Bluetooth wireless interfaces. The signals captured by the nodes are sent to a smartphone which simultaneously acts as another sensing point. In contrast to many FDSs proposed by the literature (which only consider a single sensor), the multisensory nature of the prototype is utilized to investigate the impact of the number and the positions of the sensors on the effectiveness of the production of the fall detection decision. In particular, the study assesses the capability of four popular machine learning algorithms to discriminate the dynamics of the Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and falls generated by a set of experimental subjects, when the combined use of the sensors located on different parts of the body is considered. Prior to this, the election of the statistics that optimize the characterization of the acceleration signals and the efficacy of the FDS is also investigated. In the most recent report published by theWorld Health Organization concerning people with visual disabilities it is highlighted that by the year 2020, worldwide, the number of completely blind people will reach 75 million, while the number of visually impaired (VI) people will rise to 250 million. Within this context, the development of dedicated electronic travel aid (ETA) systems, able to increase the safe displacement of VI people in indoor/outdoor spaces, while providing additional cognition of the environment becomes of outmost importance. This paper introduces a novel wearable assistive device designed to facilitate the autonomous navigation of blind and VI people in highly dynamic urban scenes. The system exploits two independent sources of information: ultrasonic sensors and the video camera embedded in a regular smartphone. The underlying methodology exploits computer vision and machine learning techniques and makes it possible to identify accurately both static and highly dynamic objects existent in a scene, regardless on their location, size or shape. In addition, the proposed system is able to acquire information about the environment, semantically interpret it and alert users about possible dangerous situations through acoustic feedback. To determine the performance of the proposed methodology we have performed an extensive objective and subjective experimental evaluation with the help of 21 VI subjects from two blind associations. This paper presents a posture recognition system aimed at detecting sitting postures of a wheelchair user. The main goals of the proposed system are to identify and inform irregular and improper posture to prevent sitting-related health issues such as pressure ulcers, with the potential that it could also be used for individuals without mobility issues. In the proposed monitoring system, an array of 16 screen printed pressure sensor units was employed to obtain pressure data, which are sampled and processed in real-time using read-out electronics. The posture recognition was performed for four sitting positions: right-, left-, forward- and backward leaning based on k-nearest neighbors (k-NN), support vector machines (SVM), random forest (RF), decision tree (DT) and LightGBM machine learning algorithms. As a result, a posture classification accuracy of up to 99.03 percent can be achieved. Experimental studies illustrate that the system can provide real-time pressure distribution value in the form of a pressure map on a standard PC and also on a raspberry pi system equipped with a touchscreen monitor. The stored pressure distribution data can later be shared with healthcare professionals so that abnormalities in sitting patterns can be identified by employing a post-processing unit. The proposed system could be used for risk assessments related to pressure ulcers. It may be served as a benchmark by recording and identifying individuals' sitting patterns and the possibility of being realized as a lightweight portable health monitoring device. Machine learning (ML) is applied in various logistic processes utilizing innovative techniques (e.g., the use of drones for automated delivery in e-commerce). Early challenges showed the insufficient drones' steering capacity and cognitive gap related to the lack of theoretical foundation for controlling algorithms. The aim of this paper is to present a game-based algorithm of controlling behaviours in the relation between an operator (OP) and a technical object (TO), based on the assumption that the game is logistics-oriented and the algorithm is to support ML applied in e-commerce optimization management. Algebraic methods, including matrices, Lagrange functions, systems of differential equations, and set-theoretic notation, have been used as the main tools. The outcome is a model of a game-based optimization process in a two-element logistics system and an algorithm applied to find optimal steering strategies. The algorithm has been initially verified with the use of simulation based on a Bayesian network (BN) and a structured set of possible strategies (OP/TO) calculated with the use of QGeNie Modeller, finally prepared for Python. It has been proved the algorithm at this stage has no deadlocks and unforeseen loops and is ready to be challenged with the original big set of learning data from a drone-operating company (as the next stage of the planned research). In sucker-rod pumping wells, due to the lack of an early diagnosis of operating condition or sensor faults, several problems can go unnoticed. These problems can increase downtime and production loss. In these wells, the diagnosis of operation conditions is carried out through downhole dynamometer cards, via pre-established patterns, with human visual effort in the operation centers. Starting with machine learning algorithms, several papers have been published on the subject, but it is still common to have doubts concerning the difficulty level of the dynamometer card classification task and best practices for solving the problem. In the search for answers to these questions, this work carried out sixty tests with more than 50,000 dynamometer cards from 38 wells in the Mossoró, RN, Brazil. In addition, it presented test results for three algorithms (decision tree, random forest and XGBoost), three descriptors (Fourier, wavelet and card load values), as well as pipelines provided by automated machine learning. Tests with and without the tuning of hypermeters, different levels of dataset balancing and various evaluation metrics were evaluated. The research shows that it is possible to detect sensor failures from dynamometer cards. Because of population ageing, fall prevention represents a human, economic, and social issue. Currently, fall-risk is assessed infrequently, and usually only after the first fall occurrence. Home monitoring could improve fall prevention. Our aim was to monitor daily activities at home in order to identify the behavioral parameters that best discriminate high fall risk from low fall risk individuals. Microsoft Kinect sensors were placed in the room of 30 patients temporarily residing in a rehabilitation center. The sensors captured the patients' movements while they were going about their daily activities. Different behavioral parameters, such as speed to sit down, gait speed or total sitting time were extracted and analyzed combining statistical and machine learning algorithms. Our algorithms classified the patients according to their estimated fall risk. The automatic fall risk assessment performed by the algorithms was then benchmarked against fall risk assessments performed by clinicians using the Tinetti test and the Timed Up and Go test. Step length, sit-stand transition and total sitting time were the most discriminant parameters to classify patients according to their fall risk. Coupling step length to the speed required to stand up or the total sitting time gave rise to an error-less classification of the patients, i.e., to the same classification as that of the clinicians. This publication revises the deteriorated performance of field calibrated low-cost sensor systems after spatial and temporal relocation, which is often reported for air quality monitoring devices that use machine learning models as part of their software to compensate for cross-sensitivities or interferences with environmental parameters. The cause of this relocation problem and its relationship to the chosen algorithm is elucidated using published experimental data in combination with techniques from data science. Thus, the origin is traced back to insufficient sampling of data that is used for calibration followed by the incorporation of bias into models. Biases often stem from non-representative data and are a common problem in machine learning, and more generally in artificial intelligence, and as such a rising concern. Finally, bias is believed to be partly reducible in this specific application by using balanced data sets generated in well-controlled laboratory experiments, although not trivial due to the need for infrastructure and professional competence. High-throughput imaging technologies have been developing rapidly for agricultural plant phenotyping purposes. With most of the current crop plant image processing algorithms, the plant canopy pixels are segmented from the images, and the averaged spectrum across the whole canopy is calculated in order to predict the plant's physiological features. However, the nutrients and stress levels vary significantly across the canopy. For example, it is common to have several times of difference among Soil Plant Analysis Development (SPAD) chlorophyll meter readings of chlorophyll content at different positions on the same leaf. The current plant image processing algorithms cannot provide satisfactory plant measurement quality, as the averaged color cannot characterize the different leaf parts. Meanwhile, the nutrients and stress distribution patterns contain unique features which might provide valuable signals for phenotyping. There is great potential to develop a finer level of image processing algorithm which analyzes the nutrients and stress distributions across the leaf for improved quality of phenotyping measurements. In this paper, a new leaf image processing algorithm based on Random Forest and leaf region rescaling was developed in order to analyze the distribution patterns on the corn leaf. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was used as an example to demonstrate the improvements of the new algorithm in differentiating between different nitrogen stress levels. With the Random Forest method integrated into the algorithm, the distribution patterns along the corn leaf's mid-rib direction were successfully modeled and utilized for improved phenotyping quality. The algorithm was tested in a field corn plant phenotyping assay with different genotypes and nitrogen treatments. Compared with the traditional image processing algorithms which average the NDVI (for example) throughout the whole leaf, the new algorithm more clearly differentiates the leaves from different nitrogen treatments and genotypes. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common cardiac disorder that can cause severe complications. AF diagnosis is typically based on the electrocardiogram (ECG) evaluation in hospitals or in clinical facilities. The aim of the present work is to propose a new artificial neural network for reliable AF identification in ECGs acquired through portable devices. A supervised fully connected artificial neural network (RSL_ANN), receiving 19 ECG features (11 morphological, 4 on F waves and 4 on heart-rate variability (HRV)) in input and discriminating between AF and non-AF classes in output, was created using the repeated structuring and learning (RSL) procedure. RSL_ANN was created and tested on 8028 (training: 4493; validation: 1125; testing: 2410) annotated ECGs belonging to the "AF Classification from a Short Single Lead ECG Recording" database and acquired with the portable KARDIA device by AliveCor. RSL_ANN performance was evaluated in terms of area under the curve (AUC) and confidence intervals (CIs) of the received operating characteristic. RSL_ANN performance was very good and very similar in training, validation and testing datasets. AUC was 91.1% (CI: 89.1–93.0%), 90.2% (CI: 86.2–94.3%) and 90.8% (CI: 88.1–93.5%) for the training, validation and testing datasets, respectively. Internet of Things (IoT) technologies are undeniably already all around us, as we stand at the cusp of the next generation of IoT technologies. Indeed, the next-generation of IoT technologies are evolving before IoT technologies have been fully adopted, and smart dust IoT technology is one such example. The concept of smart dust IoT technology, which features very small devices with low computing power, is a revolutionary and innovative concept that enables many things that were previously unimaginable, but at the same time creates unresolved problems. One of the biggest problems is the bottlenecks in data transmission that can be caused by this large number of devices. The bottleneck problem was solved with the Dual Plane Development Kit (DPDK) architecture. However, the DPDK solution created an unexpected new problem, which is called the mixed packet problem. The mixed packet problem, which occurs when a large number of data packets and control packets mix and change at a rapid rate, can slow a system significantly. In this paper, we propose a dynamic partitioning algorithm that solves the mixed packet problem by physically separating the planes and using a learning algorithm to determine the ratio of separated planes. In addition, we propose a training data model eXtended Permuted Frame (XPF) that innovatively increases the number of training data to reflect the packet characteristics of the system. By solving the mixed packet problem in this way, it was found that the proposed dynamic partitioning algorithm performed about 72% better than the general DPDK environment, and 88% closer to the ideal environment. The paper proposes a sensors platform to control a barrier that is installed for vehicles entrance. This platform is automatized by image-based license plate recognition of the vehicle. However, in situations where standardized license plates are not used, such image-based recognition becomes non-trivial and challenging due to the variations in license plate background, fonts and deformations. The proposed method first detects the approaching vehicle via ultrasonic sensors and, at the same time, captures its image via a camera installed along with the barrier. From this image, the license plate is automatically extracted and further processed to segment the license plate characters. Finally, these characters are recognized with the help of a standard optical character recognition (OCR) pipeline. The rapid proliferation of wireless sensor networks over the past few years has posed some serious technical challenges to researchers. The primary function of a multi-hop wireless sensor network (WSN) is to collect and forward sensor data towards the destination node. However, for many applications, the knowledge of the location of sensor nodes is crucial for meaningful interpretation of the sensor data. Localization refers to the process of estimating the location of sensor nodes in a WSN. Self-localization is required in large wireless sensor networks where these nodes cannot be manually positioned. Traditional methods iteratively localize these nodes by using triangulation. However, the inherent instability in wireless signals introduces an error, however minute it might be, in the estimated position of the target node. This results in the embedded error propagating and magnifying rapidly. Machine learning based localizing algorithms for large wireless sensor networks do not function in an iterative manner. In this paper, we investigate the suitability of some of these algorithms while exploring different trade-offs. Specifically, we first formulate a novel way of defining multiple feature vectors for mapping the localizing problem onto different machine learning models. As opposed to treating the localization as a classification problem, as done in the most of the reported work, we treat it as a regression problem. We have studied the impact of varying network parameters, such as network size, anchor population, transmitted signal power, and wireless channel quality, on the localizing accuracy of these models. We have also studied the impact of deploying the anchor nodes in a grid rather than placing these nodes randomly in the deployment area. Our results have revealed interesting insights while using the multivariate regression model and support vector machine (SVM) regression model with radial basis function (RBF) kernel. The main objective of this research was to introduce a novel machine learning algorithm of alternating decision tree (ADTree) based on the multiboost (MB), bagging (BA), rotation forest (RF) and random subspace (RS) ensemble algorithms under two scenarios of different sample sizes and raster resolutions for spatial prediction of shallow landslides around Bijar City, Kurdistan Province, Iran. The evaluation of modeling process was checked by some statistical measures and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC). Results show that, for combination of sample sizes of 60%/40% and 70%/30% with a raster resolution of 10 m, the RS model, while, for 80%/20% and 90%/10% with a raster resolution of 20 m, the MB model obtained a high goodness-of-fit and prediction accuracy. The RS-ADTree and MB-ADTree ensemble models outperformed the ADTree model in two scenarios. Overall, MB-ADTree in sample size of 80%/20% with a resolution of 20 m (area under the curve (AUC) = 0.942) and sample size of 60%/40% with a resolution of 10 m (AUC = 0.845) had the highest and lowest prediction accuracy, respectively. In this study, land subsidence susceptibility was assessed for a study area in South Korea by using four machine learning models including Bayesian Logistic Regression (BLR), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Logistic Model Tree (LMT) and Alternate Decision Tree (ADTree). Eight conditioning factors were distinguished as the most important affecting factors on land subsidence of Jeong-am area, including slope angle, distance to drift, drift density, geology, distance to lineament, lineament density, land use and rock-mass rating (RMR) were applied to modelling. About 24 previously occurred land subsidence were surveyed and used as training dataset (70% of data) and validation dataset (30% of data) in the modelling process. Each studied model generated a land subsidence susceptibility map (LSSM). The maps were verified using several appropriate tools including statistical indices, the area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) and success rate (SR) and prediction rate (PR) curves. The results of this study indicated that the BLR model produced LSSM with higher acceptable accuracy and reliability compared to the other applied models, even though the other models also had reasonable results.
