Delamination represents one of the most significant and dangerous damages in composite plates. Recently, many papers have presented the capability of structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques for the investigation of structural delamination with various shapes and thickness depths. However, few studies have been conducted regarding the utilization of convolutional neural network (CNN) methods for automating the non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques database to identify the delamination size and depth. In this paper, an automated system qualified for distinguishing between pristine and damaged structures and classifying three classes of delamination with various depths is presented. This system includes a proposed CNN model and the Lamb wave technique. In this work, a unidirectional composite plate with three samples of delamination inserted at different depths was prepared for numerical and experimental investigations. In the numerical part, the guided wave propagation and interaction with three samples of delamination were studied to observe how the delamination depth can affect the scattered and trapped waves over the delamination region. This numerical study was validated experimentally using an efficient ultrasonic guided waves technique. This technique involved piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWASs) and a scanning laser Doppler vibrometer (SLDV). Both numerical and experimental studies demonstrate that the delamination depth has a direct effect on the trapped waves' energy and distribution. Three different datasets were collected from the numerical and experimental studies, involving the numerical wavefield image dataset, experimental wavefield image dataset, and experimental wavenumber spectrum image dataset. These three datasets were used independently with the proposed CNN model to develop a system that can automatically classify four classes (pristine class and three different delamination classes). The results of all three datasets show the capability of the proposed CNN model for predicting the delamination depth with high accuracy. The proposed CNN model results of the three different datasets were validated using the GoogLeNet CNN. The results of both methods show an excellent agreement. Thin copper plate is widely used in architecture, transportation, heavy equipment, and integrated circuit substrates due to its unique properties. However, it is challenging to identify surface defects in copper strips arising from various manufacturing stages without direct contact. A laser ultrasonic inspection system was developed based on the Lamb wave (LW) produced by a laser pulse. An all-fiber laser heterodyne interferometer is applied for measuring the ultrasonic signal in combination with an automatic scanning system, which makes the system flexible and compact. A 3-D model simulation of an H62 brass specimen was carried out to determine the LW spatial-temporal wavefield by using the COMSOL Multiphysics software. The characteristics of the ultrasonic wavefield were extracted through continuous wavelet transform analysis. This demonstrates that the A0 mode could be used in defect detection due to its slow speed and vibrational direction. Furthermore, an ultrasonic wave at the center frequency of 370 kHz with maximum energy is suitable for defect detection. In the experiment, the size and location of the defect are determined by the time difference of the transmitted wave and reflected wave, respectively. The relative error of the defect position is 0.14% by averaging six different receiving spots. The width of the defect is linear to the time difference of the transmitted wave. The goodness of fit can reach 0.989, and it is in good agreement with the simulated one. The experimental error is less than 0.395 mm for a 5 mm width of defect. Multi-layer complex structures are widely used in large-scale engineering structures because of their diverse combinations of properties and excellent overall performance. However, multi-layer complex structures are prone to interlaminar debonding damage during use. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor debonding damage in engineering applications to determine structural integrity. In this paper, a damage information extraction method with ladder feature mining for Lamb waves is proposed. The method is able to optimize and screen effective damage information through ladder-type damage extraction. It is suitable for evaluating the severity of debonding damage in aluminum-foamed silicone rubber, a novel multi-layer complex structure. The proposed method contains ladder feature mining stages of damage information selection and damage feature fusion, realizing a multi-level damage information extraction process from coarse to fine. The results show that the accuracy of damage severity assessment by the damage information extraction method with ladder feature mining is improved by more than 5% compared to other methods. The effectiveness and accuracy of the method in assessing the damage severity of multi-layer complex structures are demonstrated, providing a new perspective and solution for damage monitoring of multi-layer complex structures. The aim of this paper is to discuss the effect of the sensor on the acoustic emission (AE) signature and to develop a methodology to reduce the sensor effect. Pencil leads are broken on PMMA plates at different source–sensor distances, and the resulting waves are detected with different sensors. Several transducers, commonly used for acoustic emission measurements, are compared with regard to their ability to reproduce the characteristic shapes of plate waves. Their consequences for AE descriptors are discussed. Their different responses show why similar test specimens and test conditions can yield disparate results. This sensor effect will furthermore make the classification of different AE sources more difficult. In this context, a specific procedure is proposed to reduce the sensor effect and to propose an efficient selection of descriptors for data merging. Principal Component Analysis has demonstrated that using the Z-score normalized descriptor data in conjunction with the Krustal–Wallis test and identifying the outliers can help reduce the sensor effect. This procedure leads to the selection of a common descriptor set with the same distribution for all sensors. These descriptors can be merged to create a library. This result opens up new outlooks for the generalization of acoustic emission signature libraries. This aspect is a key point for the development of a database for machine learning. Welded lap joints play a vital role in a wide range of engineering structures such as pipelines, storage tanks, pressure vessels, and ship hulls. This study aims to investigate the propagation of ultrasonic guided waves in steel welded lap joints for the baseline-free inspection of joint defects using the mode conversion of Lamb waves. The finite element method was used to simulate a single lap joint with common defects such as corrosion and disbonding. To identify the propagating wave modes, a wavenumber–frequency analysis was conducted using the 2D fast Fourier transform. The power loss of the transmitted modes was also determined to identify damage in the lap joints. The results indicate that the A0 incident in pristine conditions experienced significant transmission losses of about 9.5 dB compared to an attenuation of 2.8 dB for the S0 incident. The presence of corrosion was found to reduce these transmission losses by more than 28%. In contrast, introducing disbonding in the lap joint increased the transmission loss of the S0 incident, while a negligible loss was observed for the A0 incident. The mode-converted S0 (MC-S) and mode-converted A0 (MC-A0) incidents were found to exhibit a unique sensitivity to the presence of corrosion and disbonding. The results indicate that MC-S0 and MC-A0 as well as Lamb mode incidents interact differently in terms of corrosion and disbonding, providing a means to identify damage without relying on baseline signals. This study conducted experimental and numerical investigations on piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWASs) bonded to an aluminum plate to assess the impact of bonding degradation on Lamb wave generation. Three surface-bonded PWASs were examined, including one intentionally bonded with a reduced adhesive to create a defective bond. Thermal cyclic aging was applied, monitoring through laser Doppler vibrometry (LDV) and static capacitance measurements. The PWAS with the initially defective bond exhibited the poorest performance over aging cycles, emphasizing the significance of the initial bond condition. As debonding progressed, modifications in electromechanical behavior were observed, leading to a reduction in wave amplitude and distortion of the generated wave field, challenging the validity of existing analytical modeling of wave-tuning curves for perfectly bonded PWASs. Both numerical simulations and experimental observations substantiated this finding. In conclusion, this study highlights the imperative of a high-integrity bond for the proper functioning of a guided wave-based structural health monitoring (SHM) system, emphasizing ongoing challenges in assessing SHM performance. Corrosion detection for industrial settings is crucial for safe and efficient operations. Due to its high imaging resolution, the guided–wave full–waveform inversion tomography technique has significant potential for corrosion detection of plate metals. Limited by the long wavelengths of A0 and S0 mode waves, this method exhibits inadequate detection resolution for the earlier shallow and small corrosion defects. Based on the relatively short wavelength characteristics of the SH1 mode wave, we propose a high–precision corrosion detection method via SH1 guided wave using the full waveform inversion algorithms. By conducting finite element simulations of ultrasonic–guided waves on aluminum plates with varying corrosion defects, a comparison was made to assess the detection precision across A0, S0, and SH1 modes. The comparison results showed that, whether for regular or irregular defects, the SH1 mode wave always exhibited higher imaging accuracy than the A0 and S0 mode waves for shallow and small–sized defects. The corresponding experiments were conducted on an aluminum plate with simple or complex defects. The results of the experiments reconfirmed that the full waveform inversion method using SH1 guided wave can effectively reconstruct the shape and size of small and shallow corrosion defects within aluminum plates. To study the acoustic characteristics of sound scattered from laminated structures such as elastic plates and shells, it is usually required to solve the Lamb waves' dispersion equations. Many traditional root-finding methods such as bisection, the Newton–Raphson method, and the Muller method are not able to tackle the problem completely. A simple but powerful method named local peaks search (LPS) is proposed to overcome their drawbacks. Firstly, the non-zero part of the dispersion equation is defined as the dispersion function, and its reciprocal is used to transform the zeros (i.e., roots) into local peaks. Secondly, the chosen complex domain is discretized, and the coarse local domains where the local peaks exist are determined by the direct search method globally. Thirdly, the Muller method is applied to obtain the refined locations of local peaks. Lastly, in order to refine the results, a hierarchical scheme is designed and the iteration of the above procedures is implemented; the error is set to be 10−16 as the stop criteria. The accuracy of the LPS method is validated by comparing it with the bisection method for the problem of elastic plates in the vacuum. The acoustic echo structures are analyzed experimentally. By computation of Lamb waves' phase velocity, the critical angles are derived numerically and compared with the results acquired by an experiment using monostatic sound transducers. In this way, it is validated that the elastic scattered wave components are the highlights shown in the time-angle figure. Periodic permanent magnet(PPM) electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs) are commonly employed for axial defect inspection in pipelines. However, the lowest-order shear horizontal waves (SH0) guided waves have difficulties in distinctly differentiating internal and external defects. To enhance the signal-to-noise ratio and resolution, a unidirectional electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) based on Circumferential Lamb waves (CLamb waves) is developed. Through structural parameter optimization and excitation frequency adjustment, high-amplitude and low-dispersion CLamb waves are successfully generated in the high-frequency-thickness product region of the dispersion curve. Finite element simulations and experimental validation confirm the capability of this EMAT in exciting CLamb waves for the detection of crack-like defects. Experimental results demonstrate that the excitation efficiency of the CLamb EMAT exceeds that of the periodic permanent magnet electromagnetic acoustic transducer by more than tenfold. The defect reflection signal of the CLamb EMAT exhibits higher resolution and more significant amplitude compared to the PPM EMAT. The integration of this method with SH0 mode detection allows for the inspection of both internal and external defects in pipelines, offering a new avenue for EMAT applications in pipeline inspection. The impact acoustic emission (AE) of plate structures is a transient stress wave generated by local materials under impact force that contains the state information of the impacted area. If the impact causes damage, the AE from material damage will be superimposed on the impact AE. Therefore, this paper details the direct extraction of damage-induced AEs from impact AEs for the health monitoring of plate structures. The damage-induced AE was analysed based on various aspects, including the cut-off range and propagation speed characteristics of the Lamb wave mode, the correlation between the force direction and the Lamb wave mode, and the impact damage process. According to these features, the damage-induced AE wave packets were extracted and verified via impact tests on epoxy glass fibreboards. The results demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed method for determining whether an impact causes damage via the direct extraction of the damage-induced AE from the impact AE. The acoustic waves of higher orders propagating in a layered structure consisting of a silicon plate coated with piezoelectric ZnO and/or AlN films were used for the development of a sensor with selective sensitivity to liquid viscosity η in the range of 1–1500 cP. In that range, this sensor possessed low sensitivity to liquid conductivity σ and temperature T in the ranges of 0–2 S/m and 0–55 °C, respectively. The amplitude responses insensitive to the temperature instead of the phase were used to provide the necessary selectivity. The sensor was based on a weak piezoactive acoustic wave of higher order. The volume of the probes sufficient for the measurements was about 100 μL. The characteristics of the sensors were optimized by varying the thicknesses of the structure layers, number of layers, wavelength, wave propagation direction, and the order of the acoustic waves. It was shown that in the case of the layered structure, it is possible to obtain practically the same selective sensitivity toward viscosity as for acoustic waves in pure ST, X quartz. The most appropriate waves for this purpose are quasi-longitudinal and Lamb waves of higher order with in-plane polarization. It was found that for various ranges of viscosity η = 1–20 cP, 20–100 cP, and 100–1500 cP, the maximum sensitivity of the appropriate wave is equal to 0.26 dB/cP, 0.087 dB/cP, and 0.013 dB/cP, respectively. The sensitivity of the waves under study toward the electric conductivity of the liquid is much less than the sensitivity to liquid viscosity. These two responses become comparable only for very small η < 2 cP. The waves investigated have shown no temperature responses in contact with air, but in the presence of liquid, they increase depending on liquid properties. The temperature dependence of liquid viscosity is measurable by the same sensors. The results obtained have shown the possibility of designing acoustic liquid viscosity sensors based on multilayered structures. The set of possible acoustic waves in layered structures possesses modified propagation characteristics (various polarization, phase velocities, electromechanical coupling coefficients, and attenuations). Due to its multi-mode and dispersion characteristics, Lamb waves cause interference to signal processing, which profoundly limits their application in nondestructive testing. To resolve this issue, firstly, based on the traditional EMAT, a horizontal polarization periodic permanent magnet electromagnetic acoustic transducer (HP-PPM-EMAT) was proposed. A 2-D finite element model was then developed to compare magnetic flux density, Lorentz force, and signal strength between the traditional EMAT and the HP-PPM-EMAT. The simulation results show that the HP-PPM-EMAT enhances the A0 mode Lamb wave (A0 wave) and suppresses the S0 mode Lamb wave (S0 wave). Finally, the influence of structural parameters of the HP-PPM-EMAT on the total displacement amplitude ratio of A0 and S0 was investigated using orthogonal test theory, and the width of magnet units was improved based on the orthogonal test. The results show that the total displacement amplitude ratio of A0 to S0 of the improved HP-PPM-EMAT can be improved by a factor of 7.74 compared with that of the traditional Lamb wave EMAT, which can produce higher-purity A0 mode Lamb waves. The ultrasonic guided lamb wave approach is an effective non-destructive testing (NDT) method used for detecting localized mechanical damage, corrosion, and welding defects in metallic pipelines. The signal processing of guided waves is often challenging due to the complexity of the operational conditions and environment in the pipelines. Machine learning approaches in recent years, including convolutional neural networks (CNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM), have exhibited their advantages to overcome these challenges for the signal processing and data classification of complex systems, thus showing great potential for damage detection in critical oil/gas pipeline structures. In this study, a CNN-LSTM hybrid model was utilized for decoding ultrasonic guided waves for damage detection in metallic pipelines, and twenty-nine features were extracted as input to classify different types of defects in metallic pipes. The prediction capacity of the CNN-LSTM model was assessed by comparing it to those of CNN and LSTM. The results demonstrated that the CNN-LSTM hybrid model exhibited much higher accuracy, reaching 94.8%, as compared to CNN and LSTM. Interestingly, the results also revealed that predetermined features, including the time, frequency, and time–frequency domains, could significantly improve the robustness of deep learning approaches, even though deep learning approaches are often believed to include automated feature extraction, without hand-crafted steps as in shallow learning. Furthermore, the CNN-LSTM model displayed higher performance when the noise level was relatively low (e.g., SNR = 9 or higher), as compared to the other two models, but its prediction dropped gradually with the increase of the noise. In this study, a new method for determining the elastic constants of isotropic plates using Lamb wave fundamental modes is presented. This method solves the inverse problem, where the elastic constants (Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio) of the plate were estimated by measuring the phase velocities of the Lamb wave using the Rayleigh–Lamb equations to find the solution and determining the phase velocities of the A0 and S0 modes using a new method. The suitability of the proposed method for determining the elastic constants was evaluated using simulated and experimental signals propagating on an aluminum plate. The theoretical modeling on the aluminum 7075-T6 plate shows that the proposed method allows the determination of the Poisson ratio with a relative error not exceeding 2% and Young's modulus with a relative error not exceeding 0.5%. The experimental measurements of an aluminum plate of known thickness (2 mm) and density (2685 kg/m3) confirmed the suitability of the proposed method for the measurements of elastic constants. In the proposed method, the processing of ultrasonic signals can be performed in real-time, and the values of the elastic constants can be obtained immediately after scanning the required distance. New designs based on S0 Lamb modes in AlN thin layer resonating structures coupled with the implementation of structural elements in SiO2, are theoretically analyzed by the Finite Element Method (FEM). This study compares the typical characteristics of different interdigital transducer (IDTs) configurations, involving either a continuous SiO2 cap layer, or structured SiO2 elements, showing their performance in the usual terms of electromechanical coupling coefficient (K2), phase velocity, and temperature coefficient of frequency (TCF), by varying structural parameters and boundary conditions. This paper shows how to reach temperature-compensated, high-performance resonator structures based on ribbon-structured SiO2 capping. The addition of a thin diamond layer can also improve the velocity and electromechanical coupling coefficient, while keeping zero TCF and increasing the solidity of the membranes. Beyond the increase in performance allowed by such resonator configurations, their inherent structure shows additional benefits in terms of passivation, which makes them particularly relevant for sensing applications in stern environments. Damage detection and localization based on ultrasonic guided waves revealed to be promising for structural health monitoring and nondestructive testing. However, the use of a piezoelectric sensor's network to locate and image damaged areas in composite structures requires a number of precautions including the consideration of anisotropy and baseline signals. The lack of information related to these two parameters drastically deteriorates the imaging performance of numerous signal processing methods. To avoid such deterioration, the present contribution proposes different methods to build baseline signals in different types of composites. Baseline signals are first constructed from a numerical simulation model using the previously determined elasticity tensor of the structure. Since the latter tensor is not always easy to obtain especially in the case of anisotropic materials, a second PZT network is used in order to obtain signals related to Lamb waves propagating in different directions. Waveforms are then translated according to a simplified theoretical propagation model of Lamb waves in homogeneous structures. The application of the different methods on transversely isotropic, unidirectional and quasi-transversely isotropic composites allows to have satisfactory images that well represent the damaged areas with the help of the delay-and-sum algorithm. Guided acoustic waves (GAW) have proven to be a useful tool for structural health monitoring (SHM). However, the dispersive nature of commonly used Lamb waves compromises the spatial resolution making it difficult to detect small or weakly reflective defects. Here we demonstrate an approach that can compensate for the dispersive effects, allowing advanced algorithms to be used with significantly higher signal-to-noise ratio and spatial resolution. In this paper, the sign coherence factor (SCF) extension of the total focusing method (TFM) algorithm is used. The effectiveness is examined by numerical simulation and experimentally demonstrated by detecting weakly reflective layers with a highly dispersive A0 mode on an aluminum plate, which are not detectable without compensating for the dispersion effects. Thin-walled structures, like aircraft skins and ship shells, are often several meters in size but only a few millimeters thick. By utilizing the laser ultrasonic Lamb wave detection method (LU-LDM), signals can be detected over long distances without physical contact. Additionally, this technology offers excellent flexibility in designing the measurement point distribution. The characteristics of LU-LDM are first analyzed in this review, specifically in terms of laser ultrasound and hardware configuration. Next, the methods are categorized based on three criteria: the quantity of collected wavefield data, the spectral domain, and the distribution of measurement points. The advantages and disadvantages of multiple methods are compared, and the suitable conditions for each method are summarized. Thirdly, we summarize four combined methods that balance detection efficiency and accuracy. Finally, several future development trends are suggested, and the current gaps and shortcomings in LU-LDM are highlighted. This review builds a comprehensive framework for LU-LDM for the first time, which is expected to serve as a technical reference for applying this technology in large, thin-walled structures. Composite materials are widely used, but they are often subjected to impacts from foreign objects, causing structural damage. To ensure the safety of use, it is necessary to locate the impact point. This paper investigates impact sensing and localization technology for composite plates and proposes a method of acoustic source localization for CFRP composite plates based on wave velocity-direction function fitting. This method divides the grid of composite plates, constructs the theoretical time difference matrix of the grid points, and compares it with the actual time difference to form an error matching matrix to localize the impact source. In this paper, finite element simulation combined with a lead-break experiment is used to explore the wave velocity-angle function relationship of Lamb waves in composite materials. The simulation experiment is used to verify the feasibility of the localization method, and the lead-break experimental system is built to locate the actual impact source. The results show that the acoustic emission time-difference approximation method can effectively solve the problem of impact source localization in composite structures, and the average localization error is 1.44 cm and the maximum localization error is 3.35 cm in 49 experimental points with good stability and accuracy. In this paper, a novel H-shaped radial phononic crystal (H-RPC) structure is proposed to suppress the anchor loss of a Lamb wave resonator (LWR), which has an ultra-high frequency (UHF) and ultra-wideband gap characteristics. Compared to previous studies on phononic crystal (PC) structures aimed at suppressing anchor loss, the radial phononic crystal (RPC) structure is more suitable for suppressing the anchor loss of the LWR. By using the finite element method, through the research and analysis of the complex energy band and frequency response, it is found that the elastic wave can generate an ultra-wideband gap with a relative bandwidth of up to 80.2% in the UHF range when propagating in the H-RPC structure. Furthermore, the influence of geometric parameters on the ultra-wideband gap is analyzed. Then, the H-RPC structure is introduced into the LWR. Through the analysis of the resonant frequency, it is found that the LWR formed by the H-RPC structure can effectively reduce the vibration energy radiated by the anchor point. The anchor quality factor was increased by 505,560.4% compared with the conventional LWR. In addition, the analysis of the LWR under load shows that the LWR with the H-RPC structure can increase the load quality factor by 249.9% and reduce the insertion loss by 93.1%, while the electromechanical coupling coefficient is less affected. Most imaging methods based on ultrasonic Lamb waves in structural health monitoring requires reference signals, recorded in the intact state. This paper focuses on a novel baseline-free method for damage localization using Lamb waves based on a hyperbolic algorithm. This method employs a special array with a relatively small number of transducers and only one branch of the hyperbola. The novel symmetrical array was arranged on plate structures to eliminate the direct waves. The time difference between the received signals at symmetrical sensors was obtained from the damage-scattered waves. The sequence of time difference for constructing the hyperbolic trajectory was calculated by the cross-correlation method. Numerical simulation and experimental measurements were implemented on an aluminum plate with a through-thickness hole in the current state. The imaging results show that both the damages outside and inside the diamond-shaped arrays can be localized, and the positioning error reaches the maximum for the diamond-shaped array with the minimum size. Acoustic emission (AE) testing and Lamb wave inspection techniques have been widely used in non-destructive testing and structural health monitoring. For thin plates, the AEs arising from structural defect development (e.g., fatigue crack propagation) propagate as Lamb waves, and Lamb wave modes can be used to provide important information about the growth and localisation of defects. However, few sensors can be used to achieve the in situ wavenumber–frequency modal decomposition of AEs. This study explores the ability of a new multi-element piezoelectric sensor array to decompose AEs excited by pencil lead breaks (PLBs) on a thin isotropic plate. In this study, AEs were generated by out-of-plane (transverse) and in-plane (longitudinal) PLBs applied at the edge of the plate, and waveforms were recorded by both the new sensor array and a commercial AE sensor. Finite element analysis (FEA) simulations of PLBs were also conducted and the results were compared with the experimental results. To identify the wave modes present, the longitudinal and transverse PLB test results recorded by the new sensor array at five different plate locations were compared with FEA simulations using the same arrangement. Two-dimensional fast Fourier Transforms were then applied to the AE wavefields. It was found that the AE modal composition was dependent on the orientation of the PLB direction. The results suggest that this new sensor array can be used to identify the AE wave modes excited by PLBs in both in-plane and out-of-plane directions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lamb wave-based damage detection technology shows great potential for structural integrity assessment. However, conventional damage features based damage detection methods and data-driven intelligent damage detection methods highly rely on expert knowledge and sufficient labeled data for training, for which collecting is usually expensive and time-consuming. Therefore, this paper proposes an automated fatigue crack detection method using Lamb wave based on finite element method (FEM) and adversarial domain adaptation. FEM-simulation was used to obtain simulated response signals under various conditions to solve the problem of the insufficient labeled data in practice. Due to the distribution discrepancy between simulated signals and experimental signals, the detection performance of classifier just trained with simulated signals will drop sharply on the experimental signals. Then, Domain-adversarial neural network (DANN) with maximum mean discrepancy (MMD) was used to achieve discriminative and domain-invariant feature extraction between simulation source domain and experiment target domain, and the unlabeled experimental signals samples will be accurately classified. The proposed method is validated by fatigue tests on center-hole metal specimens. In this study, the Convolution Neural Network (CNN) algorithm is applied for non-destructive evaluation of aluminum panels. A method of classifying the locations of defects is proposed by exciting an aluminum panel to generate ultrasonic Lamb waves, measuring data with a sensor array, and then deep learning the characteristics of 2D imaged, reflected waves from defects. For the purpose of a better performance, the optimal excitation location and sensor locations are investigated. To ensure the robustness of the training model and extract the feature effectively, experimental data are collected by slightly changing the excitation frequency and shifting the location of the defect. The high classification accuracy for each defect location can be achieved. It is found that the proposed algorithm is also successfully applied even when a bar is attached to the panel. In view of the shortage of structural defect monitoring methods for deep submersibles, numerical simulation and experimental research on underwater SAW propagation based on interdigital transducers are carried out in this paper. PVDF interdigital transducer (PVDF-IDT) has shown considerable potential in the application of structural health monitoring because of its micro size, soft material characteristics, and the characteristics of long-term bonding on the surface of the tested structure. In order to realize the application of IDT on submersible or underwater structures, it is necessary to understand the influence of underwater environment on IDTs with different structures. The underwater attenuation of IDT with 2–5 mm wavelength and the underwater attenuation of Lamb (A0 mode) wave on a 4 mm thick titanium alloy plate is obtained through COMSOL software simulation. The experimental verification shows that the simulation results match with the actual situation, which proves that COMSOL software can accurately calculate the acoustic attenuation of surface waves at the solid–liquid interface. At the same time, the underwater attenuation of IDT with different structures is very different, providing important design parameters for the underwater interdigital transducer. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a damage detection technique based on the automatic classification of the Lamb wave signals acquired on a metallic plate. In the reported experiments, Lamb waves are excited in an aluminum plate through a piezoelectric transducer glued onto the monitored structure. The response of the monitored structure is detected through a high-resolution phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer (ϕ-OTDR). The presence and location of a small perturbation, induced by placing a lumped mass of 5 g on the plate, are determined by processing the optical fiber sensor data through support vector machine (SVM) classifiers trained with experimental data. The results show that the proposed method takes full advantage of the multipoint sensing nature of the ϕ-OTDR technology, resulting in accurate damage detection and localization. Guided waves have been extensively studied in the past few years, and more recently nonlinear guided waves have attracted significant research interest for their potential for early damage detection and material state characterization. Combined harmonic generation due to wave mixing can offer some advantages over second harmonic generation. However, studies focused on Lamb wave mixing are still very limited, and have mainly focused on collinear wave mixing and used plane wave assumption. In this paper, numerical simulations and experiments are conducted to understand the interaction of mixing non-collinear Lamb wave pulses with non-planar wavefronts. The results demonstrate that the generated secondary wave is cumulative under internal resonance conditions and the sum-frequency component of the combined harmonics is useful for characterizing material nonlinearities. Backward acoustic waves are characterized by oppositely directed phase and group velocities. These waves can exist in isotropic and piezoelectric plates. They can be detected using a set of interdigital transducers with different spatial periods located on the same piezoelectric substrate. In this paper, the effect of a nonviscous and nonconductive liquid on the characteristics of a first-order backward antisymmetric wave in a YX plate of lithium niobate is studied theoretically and experimentally. It is shown that the presence of liquid does not lead to the transformation or disappearance of this wave. It is shown that these waves are close to the cutoff frequency and are characterized by the presence of a point with zero group velocity. Ultrasonic guided waves offer a convenient and practical approach to structural health monitoring and non-destructive evaluation. A key property of guided waves is the fully defined relationship between central frequency and propagation characteristics (phase velocity, group velocity and wavenumber)—which is described using dispersion curves. For many guided wave-based strategies, accurate dispersion curve information is invaluable, such as group velocity for localisation. From experimental observations of dispersion curves, a system identification procedure can be used to determine the governing material properties. As well as returning an estimated value, it is useful to determine the distribution of these properties based on measured data. A method of simulating samples from these distributions is to use the iterative Markov-Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) procedure, which allows for freedom in the shape of the posterior. In this work, a scanning-laser Doppler vibrometer is used to record the propagation of Lamb waves in a unidirectional-glass-fibre composite plate, and dispersion curve data for various propagation angles are extracted. Using these measured dispersion curve data, the MCMC sampling procedure is performed to provide a Bayesian approach to determining the dispersion curve information for an arbitrary plate. The distribution of the material properties at each angle is discussed, including the inferred confidence in the predicted parameters. The percentage errors of the estimated values for the parameters were 10–15 points larger when using the most likely estimates, as opposed to calculating from the posterior distributions, highlighting the advantages of using a probabilistic approach. The purpose of this study is to quantitatively evaluate the differences in corneal biomechanics after SMILE and FLEx surgery using an acoustic radiation force optical coherence elastography system (ARF-OCE) and to analyze the effect of the corneal cap on the integrity of corneal biomechanical properties. A custom ring array ultrasound transducer is used to excite corneal tissue to produce Lamb waves. Depth-resolved elastic modulus images of the in vivo cornea after refractive surgery were obtained based on the phase velocity of the Lamb wave. After refractive surgery, the average elastic modulus of the corneal flap decreased (71.7 ± 24.6 kPa), while the elastic modulus of the corneal cap increased (219.5 ± 54.9 kPa). The average elastic modulus of residual stromal bed (RSB) was increased after surgery, and the value after FLEx (305.8 ± 48.5 kPa) was significantly higher than that of SMILE (221.3 ± 43.2 kPa). Compared with FLEx, SMILE preserved most of the anterior stroma with less change in corneal biomechanics, which indicated that SMILE has an advantage in preserving the integrity of the corneal biomechanical properties. This article proposes an electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) for selectively improving the purity and amplitude of ultrasonic Lamb waves in non-ferromagnetic plates. The developed EMAT consists of a racetrack coil and a group of periodic permanent magnets (PPMs). Two-dimensional finite element simulations and experiments are implemented to analyze the working mechanism and performance of the PPM EMAT. Thanks to the specific design, the eddy currents increase with increasing wire density and the directions of the magnetic fields and Lorentz forces alternate according to the polarities of the magnet units. Wires laid uniformly beneath the magnets, and the gaps between adjacent magnets generate tangential and normal Lorentz forces, resulting in-plane (IP) and out-of-plane (OP) displacements, respectively. The constructive interference occurs when the wavelength of the generated Lamb wave is twice the spacing of the magnets, leading to large amplitudes of the targeted ultrasonic Lamb waves. Therefore, the PPM EMAT is capable of generating pure symmetric or antisymmetric mode Lamb waves at respective frequencies. The results prove that the developed PPM EMAT can generate pure either S0 or A0 mode Lamb waves at respective frequencies. The increase in wire width and wire density further increases the signal amplitudes. Compared with the case of conventional meander-line-coil (MLC) EMAT, the amplitudes of the A0 and S0 mode Lamb waves of our PPM EMAT are increased to 880% and 328%, respectively. A touch interface is an important technology used in many devices, including touch panels in smartphones. Many touch panels only detect the contact position. If devices can detect shear force in addition to the contact position, various touch interactions are possible. We propose a two-step recognition method for recognizing the pressing position and shear force using active acoustic sensing, which transmits acoustic signals to an object and recognizes the state of the object by analyzing its response. Specifically, we attach a contact speaker transmitting an ultrasonic sweep signal and a contact microphone receiving ultrasonic waves to a plate of gel. The propagation characteristics of ultrasonic waves differ due to changes in the shape of the gel caused by the user's actions on the gel. This system recognizes the pressing position and shear force on the basis of the difference in acoustic characteristics. An evaluation of our method involving a user-independent model confirmed that four pressing positions were recognized with an F1 score of 85.4%, and four shear-force directions were recognized with an F1 score of 69.4%. The identification of damage based on Lamb waves can hardly avoid obtaining the reference signal under healthy conditions. A non-reference damage localization (NRDL) method is proposed in this paper. The NRDL method is established by the improved two-arrival-time difference method (2/ATDM) and BFGS method. The layout principles of the piezoelectric ceramic lead zirconate titanate (PZT) transducer array in the specimen are proposed. In contrast to existing methods, the damage outside the array in the specimen is identified based on the NRDL. The full-area damage location in the specimen is realized. This paper demonstrates that a graded-index (GRIN) phononic lens, combined with a channel waveguide, can focus anti-symmetric Lamb waves for extraction by a detector with strong directional sensitivity. Guided ultrasonic wave inspection is commonly applied for structural health monitoring applications; however, obtaining sufficient signal amplitude is a challenge. In addition, fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors have strong directional sensitivity. We fabricate the GRIN structure, followed by a channel waveguide starting at the focal point, using a commercial 3D printer and mount it on a thin aluminum plate. We characterize the focusing of the A0 mode Lamb wave in the plate, traveling across the GRIN lens using 3D laser Doppler vibrometry. We also measure the extraction of focused energy using an FBG sensor, examining the optimal sensor bond location and bond length in the channel of the waveguide for maximum signal extraction. The measured amplification of the ultrasound signal is compared to theoretical predictions. The results demonstrate that significant amplification of the waveform is achieved and that selecting the location of the FBG sensor in the channel is critical to optimizing the amplification. The RAPID (reconstruction algorithm for probabilistic inspection of defect) method based on Lamb wave detection is an effective method to give the position information of a defect in composite plate. In this paper, an improved RAPID imaging method based on machine learning (ML) is proposed to precisely visualize the location and features of defects in composite plate. First, the specific feature information of the defect, such as type, size and direction, can be identified by analyzing the detection signals through multiple machine learning models. Then, according to the obtained defect features, the scaling parameter β of the RAPID method which controls the size of the elliptical area is revised, and weights are set to the important detection paths which are related to defect features to realize precise defect imaging. In this paper, the propagation properties of ultrasonic guided waves (UGWs) in different-thickness composites (i.e., 2, 4 and 9 mm) were critically assessed, and their effectiveness for damage detections and localisations under varying temperatures was demonstrated. A diagnostic film with phased-array lead zirconate titanate (PZT) transducers based on the ink-jet printing technique was used in the experiments. Initially, the dispersion curves for these composites were compared. Next, the effects of the composite thickness on the A0 and S0 mode amplitudes and the group velocity were investigated by active sensing. Next, the behaviours of UGWs under varying temperatures in different-thickness plates were also investigated. As protection for nuclear power plants is quite necessary, the nuclear fuel is sealed in zirconium alloy thin wall cladding. During service, fuel rods might be damaged caused by wall-thickness thinning, cladding corrosion and cracking, etc. This will cause the coolant to enter into the fuel rod, which may lead to the failure of the fuel assembly. However, current diagnostic methods have limitations due to the special structure of the fuel assembly and the underwater and radioactive environment. In this paper, a novel inspection method is proposed to recognize the failure of a fuel rod. The fuel rod failure can be detected based on the presence or absence of coolant inside the fuel rod by using an ultrasonic plate wave. The inspection model and process algorithm are proposed for in-service inspection. The relationship between signal and scanning position is established and analyzed. Both ultrasound field simulation and experiment have been carried out for validation. The corresponding results illustrate that the failed nuclear fuel rod of the whole fuel assembly (including the internal rods) can be effectively detected without the influence of the near-field region by using the proposed method. The 2D-FFT is described as a traditional method for signal processing and analysis. Due to the possibility to determine the time and frequency (t,f) domains, such a method has a wide application in various industrial fields. Using that method, the obtained results are presented in images only; thus, for the extraction of quantitative values of phase velocities, additional algorithms should be used. In this work, the 2D-FFT method is presented, which is based on peak detection of the spectrum magnitude at particular frequencies for obtaining the quantitative expressions. The radiofrequency signals of ULWs (ultrasonic Lamb waves) were used for the accuracy evaluation of the method. An uncertainty evaluation was conducted to guarantee the metrological traceability of measurement results and ensure that they are accurate and reliable. Mathematical and experimental verifications were conducted by using signals of Lamb waves propagating in the aluminum plate. The obtained mean relative error of 0.12% for the A0 mode (160 kHz) and 0.05% for the S0 mode (700 kHz) during the mathematical verification indicated that the proposed method is particularly suitable for evaluating the phase-velocity dispersion in clearly expressed dispersion zones. The uncertainty analysis showed that the plate thickness, the mathematical modeling, and the step of the scanner have a significant impact on the estimated uncertainty of the phase velocity for the A0 mode. Those components of uncertainty prevail and make about ~92% of the total standard uncertainty in a clearly expressed dispersion range. The S0 mode analysis in the non-dispersion zone indicates that the repeatability of velocity variations, fluctuations of the frequency of Lamb waves, and the scanning step of the scanner influence significantly the combined uncertainty and represent 98% of the total uncertainty. Inspecting the sealing integrity of lead tabs is an important means of ensuring the reliability and safety of pouch-type lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries with a thin multi-layered aluminum (Al) laminated film. This paper presents a new air-coupled ultrasonic non-destructive testing (NDT) inspection method based on leaky Lamb wave transmission; and reception for evaluating the sealing integrity between the lead tab and the Al pouch film. The proposed method uses the critical incidence angle between the air and the layer with the fastest Lamb wave velocity to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio in the through-transmission mode. To determine the critical incidence angle, phantom experiments with two test pieces (i.e., an Al tab and an Al tab sealed with an Al pouch film) are conducted. In addition, 2D scans are performed at various incidence angles for an inhouse pouch-type Li-ion battery with a 1-mm-wide foreign material inserted as a defect. At the critical incidence angle (i.e., 22°), the proposed air-coupled ultrasonic NDT method in through-transmission mode successfully identifies the shape and location of the defect through c-scan image reconstruction. These preliminary results indicate that the proposed air-coupled ultrasonic NDT method with leaky Lamb waves can be used to inspect the sealing integrity of Li-ion pouch batteries in dry test conditions. Guided acoustic waves are commonly used in domestic water meters to measure the flow rate. The accuracy of this measurement method is affected by factors such as variations in temperature and limescale deposition inside of the pipe. In this work, a new approach using signals from different sound propagation paths is used to determine these quantities and allow for subsequent compensation. This method evaluates the different propagation times of guided Lamb waves in flow measurement applications. A finite element method-based model is used to identify the calibration curves for the device under test. The simulated dependencies on temperature and layer thickness are validated by experimental data. Finally, a test on simulated data with varying temperatures and limescale depositions proves that this method can be used to separate both effects. Lamb Wave (LW)-based structural health monitoring method is promising, but its main obstacle is damage assessment in varying environments. LW simulation based on piezoelectric transducers (referred to as PZTs) is an efficient and low-cost method. This paper proposes a multiphysics simulation method of LW propagation with the PZTs under temperature effect. The effect of temperature on LW propagation is considered from two aspects. On the one hand, temperature affects the material parameters of the structure, the adhesive layers and the PZTs. On the other hand, it is considered that the thermal stress caused by the inconsistency of thermal expansion coefficients among the structure, the adhesive layers, and the PZTs affect the piezoelectric constant of the PZTs. Based on the COMSOL Multiphysics, the mechanic–electric–thermal directly coupling simulation model under temperature effect is established. The simulation model consists of two steps. In the first step, the thermal-mechanic coupling is carried out to calculate the thermal stress, and the thermal stress effect is introduced into the piezoelectric constant model. In the second step, mechanic–electric coupling is carried out to simulate LW propagation, which considers the piezoelectric effect of the PZTs for the LW excitation and reception. The simulation results at −20 °C to 60 °C are obtained and compared to the experiment. The results show that the A0 and S0 mode of simulation signals match well with the experimental measurements. Additionally, the effect of temperature on LW propagation is consistent between simulation and experiment; that is, the amplitude increases, and the phase velocity decreases with the increment of temperature. This paper presents the design and simulation of a mass sensitive Lamb wave microsensor with CMOS technology provided by SilTerra. In this work, the effects of the metalization ratio variation on the transmission gain, total harmonic distortion (THD), and two different resonant modes (around 66 MHz and 86 MHz) are shown. It has been found that the metalization ratio can be adjusted in order to obtain a compromise between transmission gain and sensitivity, depending on the design criteria. By adding a Si 3 N 4 layer on top of the device, a five-fold improvement in transmission gain is reached. It was also shown that the transmission of the input differential IDT configuration is 20% more efficient than a single terminal. With this combination, the mass sensitivity is about 114 [cm 2 /gr]. The present paper comprehensively investigates the complex interaction between ultrasonic guided waves and local structural discontinuities, such as damages, through highly sensitive features: so-called wave damage interaction coefficients (WDICs). These WDICs are unique for each structural discontinuity and depend solely on their characteristics for a given structure and condition. Thus, they can be particularly useful for advanced assessment of lightweight structures in the context of non-destructive evaluation and structural health monitoring. However, the practical application of WDICs entails significant difficulties due to their sensitivity and complex patterns. Therefore, this study attempts to guide researchers and practitioners in the estimation of WDICs from numerical simulations and physical experiments. Detailed investigations are made for an aluminum host plate modified by artificial structural discontinuities, i.e., surface-bonded steel sheets. The numerical simulations are performed to predict WDICs and study sensitivities using a sophisticated finite element model. The experimental setup uses piezoelectric transducers to excite guided waves in the host plate. A single scanning laser Doppler vibrometer measures the scattered guided waves caused by the surface-bonded steel sheets, and the resulting WDICs with possible influences are investigated. In both cases, the orientation and thickness of the attached steel sheets were varied to create 12 different damage scenarios. In general, the comparison between numerical and experimental WDICs show good agreement. This underpins the applicability of the general methodology for simulating and measuring WDICs over all scenarios. Furthermore, the WDIC scattering patterns reveal a clear dependency of the peaks in the back-scattered reflections for both the numerical and experimental amplitude coefficients on the damage orientation, basically following the law of reflection. However, some discrepancies between both studies were observed. Numerical sensitivity analysis identified the adhesive layer as one reason for such differences. Additionally, misalignment errors in the experimental measurements were also found to affect WDICs. Therefore, an improved baseline subtraction method is proposed, which clearly enhances the experimental WDICs. Finally, an experimental sensitivity study of WDICs for selected sensing radii revealed only a minor influence. All these investigations were made for the amplitude as well as the phase representation of WDICs. Thus, these findings may open the way to future research and development of techniques employing WDICs for advanced applications of non-destructive evaluation and structural health monitoring. The present paper assessed the use of variable kinematic two-dimensional elements in the dynamic analysis of Lamb waves propagation in an isotropic plate with piezo-patches. The multi-field finite element model used in this work was based on the Carrera Unified Formulation which offers a versatile application enabling the model to apply the desired order theory. The used variable kinematic model allowed for the kinematic model to vary in space, thereby providing the possibility to implement a classical plate model in collaboration with a refined kinematic model in selected areas where higher order kinematics are needed. The propagation of the symmetric ( S 0 ) and the antisymmetric ( A 0 ) fundamental lamb waves in an isotropic strip was considered in both mechanical and piezo-elastic plate models. The convergence of the models was discussed for different kinematics approaches, under different mesh refinement, and under different time steps. The results were compared to the exact solution proposed in the literature in order to assess and further determine the effects of the different parameters used when dynamically modeling a Lamb wave propagating in such material. It was shown that the higher order kinematic models delivered a higher accuracy of the propagating wave evaluated using the corresponding Time Of Flight (TOF). Upon using the appropriate mesh refinement of 2000 elements and sufficient time steps of 4000 steps, the error between the TOF obtained analytically and numerically using a high order kinematics was found to be less than 1% for both types of fundamental Lamb waves S 0 and A 0 . Node-dependent kinematics models were also exploited in wave propagation to decrease the computational cost and to study their effect on the accuracy of the obtained results. The obtained results show, in both the mechanical and the piezo-electric models, that a reduction in the computational cost of up to 50% can be easily attained using such models while maintaining an error inferior to 1%. In this paper, the use of a phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (ϕ-OTDR) sensor for the detection of the Lamb waves excited by a piezoelectric transducer in an aluminum plate, is investigated. The system is shown to detect and resolve the Lamb wave in distinct regions of the plate, opening the possibility of realizing structural health monitoring (SHM) and damage detection using a single optical fiber attached to the structure. The system also reveals the variations in the Lamb wave resulting from a change in the load conditions of the plate. The same optical fiber used to detect the Lamb waves has also been employed to realize distributed strain measurements using a Brillouin scattering system. The method can be potentially used to replace conventional SHM sensors such as strain gauges and PZT transducers, with the advantage of offering several sensing points using a single fiber. We propose an efficient semi-analytical method capable of modeling the propagation of flexural waves on cracked plate structures with any forms of excitations, based on the same group of vibration characteristics and validated by a non-contact scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV) system. The proposed modeling method is based on the superposition of the vibrational normal modes of the detected structure, which can be applied to analyze long-time and full-field transient wave propagations. By connecting the vibration-based transient model to a power flow analysis technique, we further analyze the transient waves on a cracked plate subjected to different excitation sources and show the influence of the damage event on the path of the propagating waves. The development of MEMS acoustic resonators meets the increasing demand for in situ detection with a higher performance and smaller size. In this paper, a lithium niobate film-based S1 mode Lamb wave resonator (HF-LWR) for high-sensitivity gravimetric biosensing is proposed. The fabricated resonators, based on a 400-nm X-cut lithium niobate film, showed a resonance frequency over 8 GHz. Moreover, a PMMA layer was used as the mass-sensing layer, to study the performance of the biosensors based on HF-LWRs. Through optimizing the thickness of the lithium niobate film and the electrode configuration, the mass sensitivity of the biosensor could reach up to 74,000 Hz/(ng/cm2), and the maximum value of figure of merit (FOM) was 5.52 × 107, which shows great potential for pushing the performance boundaries of gravimetric-sensitive acoustic biosensors. While the active ultrasonic method is an attractive structural health monitoring (SHM) technology, many practical issues such as weight of transducers and cables, energy consumption, reliability and cost of implementation are restraining its application. To overcome these challenges, an active ultrasonic SHM technology enabled by a direct-write transducer (DWT) array and edge computing process is proposed in this work. The operation feasibility of the monitoring function is demonstrated with Lamb wave excited and detected by a linear DWT array fabricated in situ from piezoelectric P(VDF-TrFE) polymer coating on an aluminum alloy plate with a simulated defect. The DWT array features lightweight, small profile, high conformability, and implementation scalability, whilst the edge-computing circuit dedicatedly designed for the active ultrasonic SHM is able to perform signal processing at the sensor nodes before wirelessly transmitting the data to a remote host device. The successful implementation of edge-computing processes is able to greatly decrease the amount of data to be transferred by 331 times and decrease the total energy consumption for the wireless module by 224 times. The results and analyses show that the combination of the piezoelectric DWT and edge-computing process provides a promising technical solution for realizing practical wireless active ultrasonic SHM system. Scanning laser Doppler vibrometry is a widely adopted method to measure the full-field out-of-plane vibrational response of materials in view of detecting defects or estimating stiffness parameters. Recent technological developments have led to performant 3D scanning laser Doppler vibrometers, which give access to both out-of-plane and in-plane vibrational velocity components. In the present study, the effect of using (i) the in-plane component; (ii) the out-of-plane component; and (iii) both the in-plane and out-of-plane components of the recorded vibration velocity on the inverse determination of the stiffness parameters is studied. Input data were gathered from a series of numerical simulations using a finite element model (COMSOL), as well as from broadband experimental measurements by means of a 3D infrared scanning laser Doppler vibrometer. Various materials were studied, including carbon epoxy composite and wood materials. The full-field vibrational velocity response is converted to the frequency-wavenumber domain by means of Fourier transform, from which complex wavenumbers are extracted using the matrix pencil decomposition method. To infer the orthotropic elastic stiffness tensor, an inversion procedure is developed by coupling the semi-analytical finite element (SAFE) as a forward method to the particle swarm optimizer. It is shown that accounting for the in-plane velocity component leads to a more accurate and robust determination of the orthotropic elastic stiffness parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper deals with guided wave-based structural health monitoring of composite overwrapped pressure vessels adopted for space application. Indeed, they are well suited for this scope thanks to their improved performance compared with metallic tanks. However, they are characterized by a complex damage mechanics and suffer from impact induced damage, e.g., due to space debris. After reviewing the limited progress in this specific application, the paper thoroughly covers all the steps needed to design and verify guided wave structural health monitoring system, including methodology, digital modelling, reliability, and noise estimation for a correct decision-making process in a virtual environment. In particular, propagation characteristics of the fundamental anti-symmetric mode are derived experimentally on a real specimen to validate a variety of finite element models useful to investigate wave interaction with damage. Different signal processing techniques are demonstrated sensitive to defect and linearly dependent upon damage severity, showing promising reliability. Those features can be implemented in a probability-based diagnostic imaging in order to detect and localized impact induce damage. A multi-parameter approach is achieved by metrics fusion demonstrating increased capability in damage detection with promising implication in enhancing probability of detection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
