Recently, explainability in machine and deep learning has become an important area in the field of research as well as interest, both due to the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) methods and understanding of the decisions made by models. The explainability of artificial intelligence (XAI) is due to the increasing consciousness in, among other things, data mining, error elimination, and learning performance by various AI algorithms. Moreover, XAI will allow the decisions made by models in problems to be more transparent as well as effective. In this study, models from the 'glass box' group of Decision Tree, among others, and the 'black box' group of Random Forest, among others, were proposed to understand the identification of selected types of currant powders. The learning process of these models was carried out to determine accuracy indicators such as accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score. It was visualized using Local Interpretable Model Agnostic Explanations (LIMEs) to predict the effectiveness of identifying specific types of blackcurrant powders based on texture descriptors such as entropy, contrast, correlation, dissimilarity, and homogeneity. Bagging (Bagging_100), Decision Tree (DT0), and Random Forest (RF7_gini) proved to be the most effective models in the framework of currant powder interpretability. The measures of classifier performance in terms of accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score for Bagging_100, respectively, reached values of approximately 0.979. In comparison, DT0 reached values of 0.968, 0.972, 0.968, and 0.969, and RF7_gini reached values of 0.963, 0.964, 0.963, and 0.963. These models achieved classifier performance measures of greater than 96%. The growing popularity of social media has engendered the social problem of spam proliferation through this medium. New spam types that evade existing spam detection systems are being developed continually, necessitating corresponding countermeasures. This study proposes an anomaly detection-based framework to detect new Twitter spam, which works by modeling the characteristics of non-spam tweets and using anomaly detection to classify tweets deviating from this model as anomalies. However, because modeling varied non-spam tweets is challenging, the technique's spam detection and false positive (FP) rates are low and high, respectively. To overcome this shortcoming, anomaly detection is performed on known spam tweets pre-detected using a trained decision tree while modeling normal tweets. A one-class support vector machine and an autoencoder with high detection rates are used for anomaly detection. The proposed framework exhibits superior detection rates for unknown spam compared to conventional techniques, while maintaining equivalent or improved detection and FP rates for known spam. The rapid development of the Internet of Things (IoT) has brought many conveniences to our daily life. However, it has also introduced various security risks that need to be addressed. The proliferation of IoT botnets is one of these risks. Most of researchers have had some success in IoT botnet detection using artificial intelligence (AI). However, they have not considered the impact of dynamic network data streams on the models in real-world environments. Over time, existing detection models struggle to cope with evolving botnets. To address this challenge, we propose an incremental learning approach based on Gradient Boosting Decision Trees (GBDT), called GBDT-IL, for detecting botnet traffic in IoT environments. It improves the robustness of the framework by adapting to dynamic IoT data using incremental learning. Additionally, it incorporates an enhanced Fisher Score feature selection algorithm, which enables the model to achieve a high accuracy even with a smaller set of optimal features, thereby reducing the system resources required for model training. To evaluate the effectiveness of our approach, we conducted experiments on the BoT-IoT, N-BaIoT, MedBIoT, and MQTTSet datasets. We compared our method with similar feature selection algorithms and existing concept drift detection algorithms. The experimental results demonstrated that our method achieved an average accuracy of 99.81% using only 25 features, outperforming similar feature selection algorithms. Furthermore, our method achieved an average accuracy of 96.88% in the presence of different types of drifting data, which is 2.98% higher than the best available concept drift detection algorithms, while maintaining a low average false positive rate of 3.02%. The effective identification and mitigation of non-line-of-sight (NLOS) ranging errors are essential for achieving high-precision positioning and navigation with ultra-wideband (UWB) technology in harsh indoor environments. In this paper, an efficient UWB ranging-error mitigation strategy that uses novel channel impulse response parameters based on the results of a two-step NLOS identification, composed of a decision tree and feedforward neural network, is proposed to realize indoor locations. NLOS ranging errors are classified into three types, and corresponding mitigation strategies and recall mechanisms are developed, which are also extended to partial line-of-sight (LOS) errors. Extensive experiments involving three obstacles (humans, walls, and glass) and two sites show an average NLOS identification accuracy of 95.05%, with LOS/NLOS recall rates of 95.72%/94.15%. The mitigated LOS errors are reduced by 50.4%, while the average improvement in the accuracy of the three types of NLOS ranging errors is 61.8%, reaching up to 76.84%. Overall, this method achieves a reduction in LOS and NLOS ranging errors of 25.19% and 69.85%, respectively, resulting in a 54.46% enhancement in positioning accuracy. This performance surpasses that of state-of-the-art techniques, such as the convolutional neural network (CNN), long short-term memory–extended Kalman filter (LSTM-EKF), least-squares–support vector machine (LS-SVM), and k-nearest neighbor (K-NN) algorithms. With the advancement of engineering techniques, underground shield tunneling projects have also started incorporating emerging technologies to monitor the forces and displacements during the construction and operation phases of shield tunnels. Monitoring devices installed on the tunnel segment components generate a large amount of data. However, due to various factors, data may be missing. Hence, the completion of the incomplete data is imperative to ensure the utmost safety of the engineering project. In this research, a missing data imputation technique utilizing Random Forest (RF) is introduced. The optimal combination of the number of decision trees, maximum depth, and number of features in the RF is determined by minimizing the Mean Squared Error (MSE). Subsequently, complete soil pressure data are artificially manipulated to create incomplete datasets with missing rates of 20%, 40%, and 60%. A comparative analysis of the imputation results using three methods—median, mean, and RF—reveals that this proposed method has the smallest imputation error. As the missing rate increases, the mean squared error of the Random Forest method and the other two methods also increases, with a maximum difference of about 70%. To address the limitations of LiDAR dynamic target detection methods, which often require heuristic thresholding, indirect computational assistance, supplementary sensor data, or postdetection, we propose an innovative method based on multidimensional features. Using the differences between the positions and geometric structures of point cloud clusters scanned by the same target in adjacent frame point clouds, the motion states of the point cloud clusters are comprehensively evaluated. To enable the automatic precision pairing of point cloud clusters from adjacent frames of the same target, a double registration algorithm is proposed for point cloud cluster centroids. The iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm is employed for approximate interframe pose estimation during coarse registration. The random sample consensus (RANSAC) and four-parameter transformation algorithms are employed to obtain precise interframe pose relations during fine registration. These processes standardize the coordinate systems of adjacent point clouds and facilitate the association of point cloud clusters from the same target. Based on the paired point cloud cluster, a classification feature system is used to construct the XGBoost decision tree. To enhance the XGBoost training efficiency, a Spearman's rank correlation coefficient-bidirectional search for a dimensionality reduction algorithm is proposed to expedite the optimal classification feature subset construction. After preliminary outcomes are generated by XGBoost, a double Boyer–Moore voting-sliding window algorithm is proposed to refine the final LiDAR dynamic target detection accuracy. To validate the efficacy and efficiency of our method in LiDAR dynamic target detection, an experimental platform is established. Real-world data are collected and pertinent experiments are designed. The experimental results illustrate the soundness of our method. The LiDAR dynamic target correct detection rate is 92.41%, the static target error detection rate is 1.43%, and the detection efficiency is 0.0299 s. Embedded system technologies are increasingly being incorporated into manufacturing, smart grid, industrial control systems, and transportation systems. However, the vast majority of today's embedded platforms lack the support of built-in security features which makes such systems highly vulnerable to a wide range of cyber-attacks. Specifically, they are vulnerable to malware injection code that targets the power distribution system of an ARM Cortex-M-based microcontroller chipset (ARM, Cambridge, UK). Through hardware exploitation of the clock-gating distribution system, an attacker is capable of disabling/activating various subsystems on the chip, compromising the reliability of the system during normal operation. This paper proposes the development of an Intrusion Detection System (IDS) capable of detecting clock-gating malware deployed on ARM Cortex-M-based embedded systems. To enhance the robustness and effectiveness of our approach, we fully implemented, tested, and compared six IDSs, each employing different methodologies. These include IDSs based on K-Nearest Classifier, Random Forest, Logistic Regression, Decision Tree, Naive Bayes, and Stochastic Gradient Descent. Each of these IDSs was designed to identify and categorize various variants of clock-gating malware deployed on the system. We have analyzed the performance of these IDSs in terms of detection accuracy against various types of clock-gating malware injection code. Power consumption data collected from the chipset during normal operation and malware code injection attacks were used for models' training and validation. Our simulation results showed that the proposed IDSs, particularly those based on K-Nearest Classifier and Logistic Regression, were capable of achieving high detection rates, with some reaching a detection rate of 0.99. The article presents an attempt to identify an appropriate regression model for the estimation of cutting tool lifespan in the milling process based on the analysis of the R2 parameters of these models. The work is based on our own experiments and the accumulated database (which we make available for further use). The study uses a Haas VF-1 milling machine equipped with vibration sensors and based on a Beckhoff PLC data collector. As the acquired sensor data are continuous, and in order to account for dependencies between them, regression models were used. Support Vector Regression (SVR), decision trees and neural networks were tested during the work. The results obtained show that the best prediction results with the lowest error values were obtained for two-dimensional neural networks using the LBFGS solver (93.9%). Very similar results were also obtained for SVR (93.4%). The research carried out is related to the realisation of intelligent manufacturing dedicated to Industry 4.0 in the field of monitoring production processes, planning service downtime and reducing the level of losses resulting from damage to materials, semi-finished products and tools. Predictive maintenance is a proactive approach to maintenance in which equipment and machinery are monitored and analyzed to predict when maintenance is needed. Instead of relying on fixed schedules or reacting to breakdowns, predictive maintenance uses data and analytics to determine the appropriate time to perform maintenance activities. In industrial applications, machine boxes can be used to collect and transmit the feature information of manufacturing machines. The collected data are essential to identify the status of working machines. This paper investigates the design and implementation of a machine box based on the ROS framework. Several types of communication interfaces are included that can be adopted to different sensor modules for data sensing. The collected data are used for the application on predictive maintenance. The key concepts of predictive maintenance include data collection, a feature analysis, and predictive models. A correlation analysis is crucial in a feature analysis, where the dominant features can be determined. In this work, linear regression, a neural network, and a decision tree are adopted for model learning. Experimental results illustrate the feasibility of the proposed smart machine box. Phishing attacks are evolving with more sophisticated techniques, posing significant threats. Considering the potential of machine-learning-based approaches, our research presents a similar modern approach for web phishing detection by applying powerful machine learning algorithms. An efficient layered classification model is proposed to detect websites based on their URL structure, text, and image features. Previously, similar studies have used machine learning techniques for URL features with a limited dataset. In our research, we have used a large dataset of 20,000 website URLs, and 22 salient features from each URL are extracted to prepare a comprehensive dataset. Along with this, another dataset containing website text is also prepared for NLP-based text evaluation. It is seen that many phishing websites contain text as images, and to handle this, the text from images is extracted to classify it as spam or legitimate. The experimental evaluation demonstrated efficient and accurate phishing detection. Our layered classification model uses support vector machine (SVM), XGBoost, random forest, multilayer perceptron, linear regression, decision tree, naïve Bayes, and SVC algorithms. The performance evaluation revealed that the XGBoost algorithm outperformed other applied models with maximum accuracy and precision of 94% in the training phase and 91% in the testing phase. Multilayer perceptron also worked well with an accuracy of 91% in the testing phase. The accuracy results for random forest and decision tree were 91% and 90%, respectively. Logistic regression and SVM algorithms were used in the text-based classification, and the accuracy was found to be 87% and 88%, respectively. With these precision values, the models classified phishing and legitimate websites very well, based on URL, text, and image features. Induction motors (IMs) are widely used in industrial applications due to their advantages over other motor types. However, the efficiency and lifespan of IMs can be significantly impacted by operating conditions, especially Unbalanced Supply Voltages (USV), which are common in industrial plants. Detecting and accurately assessing the severity of USV in real-time is crucial to prevent major breakdowns and enhance reliability and safety in industrial facilities. This paper presented a reliable method for precise online detection of USV by monitoring a relevant indicator, denominated by negative voltage factor (NVF), which, in turn, is obtained using the voltage symmetrical components. On the other hand, impedance estimation proves to be fundamental to understand the behavior of motors and identify possible problems. IM impedance affects its performance, namely torque, power factor and efficiency. Furthermore, as the presence of faults or abnormalities is manifested by the modification of the IM impedance, its estimation is particularly useful in this context. This paper proposed two machine learning (ML) models, the first one estimated the IM stator phase impedance, and the second one detected USV conditions. Therefore, the first ML model was capable of estimating the IM phases impedances using just the phase currents with no need for extra sensors, as the currents were used to control the IM. The second ML model required both phase currents and voltages to estimate NVF. The proposed approach used a combination of a Regressor Decision Tree (DTR) model with the Short Time Least Squares Prony (STLSP) technique. The STLSP algorithm was used to create the datasets that will be used in the training and testing phase of the DTR model, being crucial in the creation of both features and targets. After the training phase, the STLSP technique was again used on completely new data to obtain the DTR model inputs, from which the ML models can estimate desired physical quantities (phases impedance or NVF). Smart production ecosystems are a valuable target for attackers. In particular, due to the high level of connectivity introduced by Industry 4.0, attackers can potentially attack individual components of production systems from the outside. One approach to strengthening the security of industrial control systems is to perform black box security tests such as network fuzzing. These are applicable, even if no information on the internals of the control system is available. However, most security testing strategies assume a gray box setting, in which some information on the internals are available. We propose a new approach to bridge the gap between these gray box strategies and the real-world black box setting in the domain of industrial control systems. This approach involves training an adaptive machine learning model that approximates the information that is missing in a black box setting. We propose three different approaches for the model, combine them with an evolutionary testing approach, and perform an evaluation using a System under Test with known vulnerabilities. Our evaluation shows that the model is indeed able to learn valuable information about a previously unknown system, and that more vulnerabilities can be uncovered with our approach. Amid the rapid proliferation of thousands of new websites daily, distinguishing safe ones from potentially harmful ones has become an increasingly complex task. These websites often collect user data, and, without adequate cybersecurity measures such as the efficient detection and classification of malicious URLs, users' sensitive information could be compromised. This study aims to develop models based on machine learning algorithms for the efficient identification and classification of malicious URLs, contributing to enhanced cybersecurity. Within this context, this study leverages support vector machines (SVMs), random forests (RFs), decision trees (DTs), and k-nearest neighbors (KNNs) in combination with Bayesian optimization to accurately classify URLs. To improve computational efficiency, instance selection methods are employed, including data reduction based on locality-sensitive hashing (DRLSH), border point extraction based on locality-sensitive hashing (BPLSH), and random selection. The results show the effectiveness of RFs in delivering high precision, recall, and F1 scores, with SVMs also providing competitive performance at the expense of increased training time. The results also emphasize the substantial impact of the instance selection method on the performance of these models, indicating its significance in the machine learning pipeline for malicious URL classification. This study addresses the problem of accurately predicting azimuth and elevation angles of signals impinging on an antenna array employing Machine Learning (ML). Using the information obtained at a receiving system when a transmitter's signal hits it, a Decision Tree (DT) model is trained to estimate azimuth and elevation angles simultaneously. Simulation results demonstrate the robustness of the proposed DT-based method, showcasing its ability to predict the Direction of Arrival (DOA) in diverse conditions beyond the ones present in the training dataset, i.e., the results display the model's generalization capability. Additionally, the comparative analysis reveals that DT-based DOA estimation outperforms the state-of-the-art MUltiple SIgnal Classification (MUSIC) algorithm. Our results demonstrate an average reduction of over 90% in the prediction error and 50% in the prediction time achieved by our proposal when compared to the MUSIC algorithm. This work illustrates an innovative localisation sensor network that uses multiple PIR and ultrasonic sensors installed on a mobile social robot to localise occupants in indoor environments. The system presented aims to measure movement direction and distance to reconstruct the movement of a person in an indoor environment by using sensor activation strategies and data processing techniques. The data collected are then analysed using both a supervised (Decision Tree) and an unsupervised (K-Means) machine learning algorithm to extract the direction and distance of occupant movement from the measurement system, respectively. Tests in a controlled environment have been conducted to assess the accuracy of the methodology when multiple PIR and ultrasonic sensor systems are used. In addition, a qualitative evaluation of the system's ability to reconstruct the movement of the occupant has been performed. In recent years, both machine learning and computer vision have seen growth in the use of multi-label categorization. SMOTE is now being utilized in existing research for data balance, and SMOTE does not consider that nearby examples may be from different classes when producing synthetic samples. As a result, there can be more class overlap and more noise. To avoid this problem, this work presented an innovative technique called Adaptive Synthetic Data-Based Multi-label Classification (ASDMLC). Adaptive Synthetic (ADASYN) sampling is a sampling strategy for learning from unbalanced data sets. ADASYN weights minority class instances by learning difficulty. For hard-to-learn minority class cases, synthetic data are created. Their numerical variables are normalized with the help of the Min-Max technique to standardize the magnitude of each variable's impact on the outcomes. The values of the attribute in this work are changed to a new range, from 0 to 1, using the normalization approach. To raise the accuracy of multi-label classification, Velocity-Equalized Particle Swarm Optimization (VPSO) is utilized for feature selection. In the proposed approach, to overcome the premature convergence problem, standard PSO has been improved by equalizing the velocity with each dimension of the problem. To expose the inherent label dependencies, the multi-label classification ensemble of Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS), Probabilistic Neural Network (PNN), and Clustering-Based Decision tree methods will be processed based on an averaging method. The following criteria, including precision, recall, accuracy, and error rate, are used to assess performance. The suggested model's multi-label classification accuracy is 90.88%, better than previous techniques, which is PCT, HOMER, and ML-Forest is 65.57%, 70.66%, and 82.29%, respectively. An Internet of Things (IoT) network is prone to many ways of threatening individuals. IoT sensors are lightweight, lack complicated security protocols, and face threats to privacy and confidentiality. Hackers can attack the IoT network and access personal information and confidential data for blackmailing, and negatively manipulate data. This study aims to propose an IoT threat protection system (IoTTPS) to protect the IoT network from threats using an ensemble model RKSVM, comprising a random forest (RF), K nearest neighbor (KNN), and support vector machine (SVM) model. The software-defined networks (SDN)-based IoT network datasets such as KDD cup 99, NSL-KDD, and CICIDS are used for threat detection based on machine learning. The experimental phase is conducted by using a decision tree (DT), logistic regression (LR), Naive Bayes (NB), RF, SVM, gradient boosting machine (GBM), KNN, and the proposed ensemble RKSVM model. Furthermore, performance is optimized by adding a grid search hyperparameter optimization technique with K-Fold cross-validation. As well as the NSL-KDD dataset, two other datasets, KDD and CIC-IDS 2017, are used to validate the performance. Classification accuracies of 99.7%, 99.3%, 99.7%, and 97.8% are obtained for DoS, Probe, U2R, and R2L attacks using the proposed ensemble RKSVM model using grid search and cross-fold validation. According to the World Health Organisation, falling is a major health problem with potentially fatal implications. Each year, thousands of people die as a result of falls, with seniors making up 80% of these fatalities. The automatic detection of falls may reduce the severity of the consequences. Our study focuses on developing a vision-based fall detection system. Our work proposes a new feature descriptor that results in a new fall detection framework. The body geometry of the subject is analyzed and patterns that help to distinguish falls from non-fall activities are identified in our proposed method. An AlphaPose network is employed to identify 17 keypoints on the human skeleton. Thirteen keypoints are used in our study, and we compute two additional keypoints. These 15 keypoints are divided into five segments, each of which consists of a group of three non-collinear points. These five segments represent the left hand, right hand, left leg, right leg and craniocaudal section. A novel feature descriptor is generated by extracting the distances from the segmented parts, angles within the segmented parts and the angle of inclination for every segmented part. As a result, we may extract three features from each segment, giving us 15 features per frame that preserve spatial information. To capture temporal dynamics, the extracted spatial features are arranged in the temporal sequence. As a result, the feature descriptor in the proposed approach preserves the spatio-temporal dynamics. Thus, a feature descriptor of size [ m × 15 ] is formed where m is the number of frames. To recognize fall patterns, machine learning approaches such as decision trees, random forests, and gradient boost are applied to the feature descriptor. In recent years, human activity recognition (HAR) has gained significant interest from researchers in the sports and fitness industries. In this study, the authors have proposed a cascaded method including two classifying stages to classify fitness exercises, utilizing a decision tree as the first stage and a one-dimension convolutional neural network as the second stage. The data acquisition was carried out by five participants performing exercises while wearing an inertial measurement unit sensor attached to a wristband on their wrists. However, only data acquired along the z-axis of the IMU accelerator was used as input to train and test the proposed model, to simplify the model and optimize the training time while still achieving good performance. To examine the efficiency of the proposed method, the authors compared the performance of the cascaded model and the conventional 1D-CNN model. The obtained results showed an overall improvement in the accuracy of exercise classification by the proposed model, which was approximately 92%, compared to 82.4% for the 1D-CNN model. In addition, the authors suggested and evaluated two methods to optimize the clustering outcome of the first stage in the cascaded model. This research demonstrates that the proposed model, with advantages in terms of training time and computational cost, is able to classify fitness workouts with high performance. This paper presents a state-of-the-art estimation technique by cross-combining a number n of filters for high-precision, reliable and robust vehicle sideslip angle state estimation, over a full range of vehicle operations irrespective of the driving mission and disruptions that may occur in the system. A machine-learning algorithm based on decision trees connects several filters together to switch between them according to the driving context, ensuring the best possible state estimate for relatively small and large sideslip angle values. In conjunction with the above-mentioned aspects, a seamless transition between different vehicle models is attained by observing the key parameters characterizing the lateral motion of the vehicle. The advancements and reliance on digital data necessitates dependence on information technology. The growing amount of digital data and their availability over the Internet have given rise to the problem of information security. With the increase in connectivity among devices and networks, maintaining the information security of an asset has now become essential for an organization. Intrusion detection systems (IDS) are widely used in networks for protection against different network attacks. Several machine-learning-based techniques have been used among researchers for the implementation of anomaly-based IDS (AIDS). In the past, the focus primarily remained on the improvement of the accuracy of the system. Efficiency with respect to time is an important aspect of an IDS, which most of the research has thus far somewhat overlooked. For this purpose, we propose a multi-layered filtration framework (MLFF) for feature reduction using a statistical approach. The proposed framework helps reduce the detection time without affecting the accuracy. We use the CIC-IDS2017 dataset for experiments. The proposed framework contains three filters and is connected in sequential order. The accuracy, precision, recall and F1 score are calculated against the selected machine learning models. There are high concentrations of urban spaces and increasingly complex land use types. Providing an efficient and scientific identification of building types has become a major challenge in urban architectural planning. This study used an optimized gradient-boosted decision tree algorithm to enhance a decision tree model for building classification. Through supervised classification learning, machine learning training was conducted using a business-type weighted database. We innovatively established a form database to store input items. During parameter optimization, parameters such as the number of nodes, maximum depth, and learning rate were gradually adjusted based on the performance of the verification set to achieve optimal performance on the verification set under the same conditions. Simultaneously, a k-fold cross-validation method was used to avoid overfitting. The model clusters trained in the machine learning training corresponded to various city sizes. By setting the parameters to determine the size of the area of land for a target city, the corresponding classification model could be invoked. The experimental results show that this algorithm has high accuracy in building recognition. Especially in R, S, and U-class buildings, the overall accuracy rate of recognition reaches over 94%. Due to subjectivity in refereeing, the results of race walking are often questioned. To overcome this limitation, artificial-intelligence-based technologies have demonstrated their potential. The paper aims at presenting WARNING, an inertial-based wearable sensor integrated with a support vector machine algorithm to automatically identify race-walking faults. Two WARNING sensors were used to gather the 3D linear acceleration related to the shanks of ten expert race-walkers. Participants were asked to perform a race circuit following three race-walking conditions: legal, illegal with loss-of-contact and illegal with knee-bent. Thirteen machine learning algorithms, belonging to the decision tree, support vector machine and k-nearest neighbor categories, were evaluated. An inter-athlete training procedure was applied. Algorithm performance was evaluated in terms of overall accuracy, F1 score and G-index, as well as by computing the prediction speed. The quadratic support vector was confirmed to be the best-performing classifier, achieving an accuracy above 90% with a prediction speed of 29,000 observations/s when considering data from both shanks. A significant reduction of the performance was assessed when considering only one lower limb side. With the massive, worldwide, smart metering roll-out, both energy suppliers and users are starting to tap into the potential of higher resolution energy readings for accurate billing, improved demand response, improved tariffs better tuned to users and the grid, and empowering end-users to know how much their individual appliances contribute to their electricity bills via nonintrusive load monitoring (NILM). A number of NILM approaches, based on machine learning (ML), have been proposed over the years, focusing on improving the NILM model performance. However, the trustworthiness of the NILM model itself has hardly been addressed. It is important to explain the underlying model and its reasoning to understand why the model underperforms in order to satisfy user curiosity and to enable model improvement. This can be done by leveraging naturally interpretable or explainable models as well as explainability tools. This paper adopts a naturally interpretable decision tree (DT)-based approach for a NILM multiclass classifier. Furthermore, this paper leverages explainability tools to determine local and global feature importance, and design a methodology that informs feature selection for each appliance class, which can determine how well a trained model will predict an appliance on any unseen test data, minimising testing time on target datasets. We explain how one or more appliances can negatively impact classification of other appliances and predict appliance and model performance of the REFIT-data trained models on unseen data of the same house and on unseen houses on the UK-DALE dataset. Experimental results confirm that models trained with the explainability-informed local feature importance can improve toaster classification performance from 65% to 80%. Additionally, instead of one five-classifier approach incorporating all five appliances, a three-classifier approach comprising a kettle, microwave, and dishwasher and a two-classifier comprising a toaster and washing machine improves classification performance for the dishwasher from 72% to 94% and the washing machine from 56% to 80%. This study aims to analyze the asymmetry between both eyes of the same patient for the early diagnosis of glaucoma. Two imaging modalities, retinal fundus images and optical coherence tomographies (OCTs), have been considered in order to compare their different capabilities for glaucoma detection. From retinal fundus images, the difference between cup/disc ratio and the width of the optic rim has been extracted. Analogously, the thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer has been measured in spectral-domain optical coherence tomographies. These measurements have been considered as asymmetry characteristics between eyes in the modeling of decision trees and support vector machines for the classification of healthy and glaucoma patients. The main contribution of this work is indeed the use of different classification models with both imaging modalities to jointly exploit the strengths of each of these modalities for the same diagnostic purpose based on the asymmetry characteristics between the eyes of the patient. The results show that the optimized classification models provide better performance with OCT asymmetry features between both eyes (sensitivity 80.9%, specificity 88.2%, precision 66.7%, accuracy 86.5%) than with those extracted from retinographies, although a linear relationship has been found between certain asymmetry features extracted from both imaging modalities. Therefore, the resulting performance of the models based on asymmetry features proves their ability to differentiate healthy from glaucoma patients using those metrics. Models trained from fundus characteristics are a useful option as a glaucoma screening method in the healthy population, although with lower performance than those trained from the thickness of the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer. The importance of civil engineering infrastructure in modern societies has increased lately due to the growth of the global economy. It forges global supply chains facilitating enormous economic activity. The bridges usually form critical links in complex supply chain networks. Structural health monitoring (SHM) of these infrastructures is essential to reduce life-cycle costs, and determine their remaining life using advanced sensing techniques and data fusion methods. However, the data obtained from the SHM systems describing the health condition of the infrastructure systems may contain anomalies (i.e., distortion, drift, bias, outlier, noise etc.). An automated framework is required to accurately classify these anomalies and evaluate the current condition of these systems in a timely and cost-effective manner. In this paper, a recursive and interpretable decision tree framework is proposed to perform multiclass classification of acceleration data collected from a real-life bridge. The decision nodes of the decision tree are random forest classifiers that are invoked recursively after synthetically augmenting the training data before successive iterations until suitable classification performance is obtained. This machine-learning-based classification model evolved from a simplistic decision tree where statistical features are used to perform classification. The feature vectors defined for training the random forest classifiers are calculated using similar statistical features that are easy to interpret, enhancing the interpretability of the classifier models. Proper maintenance of the electricity infrastructure requires periodic condition inspections of power line insulators, which can be subjected to various damages such as burns or fractures. The article includes an introduction to the problem of insulator detection and a description of various currently used methods. Afterwards, the authors proposed a new method for the detection of the power line insulators in digital images by applying selected signal analysis and machine learning algorithms. The insulators detected in the images can be further assessed in depth. The data set used in the study consists of images acquired by an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) during its overflight along a high-voltage line located on the outskirts of the city of Opole, Opolskie Voivodeship, Poland. In the digital images, the insulators were placed against different backgrounds, for example, sky, clouds, tree branches, elements of power infrastructure (wires, trusses), farmland, bushes, etc. The proposed method is based on colour intensity profile classification on digital images. Firstly, the set of points located on digital images of power line insulators is determined. Subsequently, those points are connected using lines that depict colour intensity profiles. These profiles were transformed using the Periodogram method or Welch method and then classified with Decision Tree, Random Forest or XGBoost algorithms. In the article, the authors described the computational experiments, the obtained results and possible directions for further research. In the best case, the proposed solution achieved satisfactory efficiency (F1 score = 0.99). This paper researches the recognition of modulation signals in underwater acoustic communication, which is the fundamental prerequisite for achieving noncooperative underwater communication. In order to improve the accuracy of signal modulation mode recognition and the recognition effects of traditional signal classifiers, the article proposes a classifier based on the Archimedes Optimization Algorithm (AOA) and Random Forest (RF). Seven different types of signals are selected as recognition targets, and 11 feature parameters are extracted from them. The decision tree and depth obtained by the AOA algorithm are calculated, and the optimized random forest after the AOA algorithm is used as the classifier to achieve the recognition of underwater acoustic communication signal modulation mode. Simulation experiments show that when the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is higher than −5dB, the recognition accuracy of the algorithm can reach 95%. Due to the rapid development of machine-learning technology, companies can build complex models to provide prediction or classification services for customers without resources. A large number of related solutions exist to protect the privacy of models and user data. However, these efforts require costly communication and are not resistant to quantum attacks. To solve this problem, we designed a new secure integer-comparison protocol based on fully homomorphic encryption and proposed a client-server classification protocol for decision-tree evaluation based on the secure integer-comparison protocol. Compared to existing work, our classification protocol has a relatively low communication cost and requires only one round of communication with the user to complete the classification task. Moreover, the protocol was built on a fully homomorphic-scheme-based lattice that is resistant to quantum attacks, as opposed to conventional schemes. Finally, we conducted an experimental analysis comparing our protocol with the traditional approach on three datasets. This paper presents a method for the multi-criteria classification of data in terms of identifying pneumatic wheel imbalance on the basis of vehicle body vibrations in normal operation conditions. The paper uses an expert system based on search graphs that apply source features of objects and distances from points in the space of classified objects (the metric used). Rules generated for data obtained from tests performed under stationary and road conditions using a chassis dynamometer were used to develop the expert system. The recorded linear acceleration signals of the vehicle body were analyzed in the frequency domain for which the power spectral density was determined. The power field values for selected harmonics of the spectrum consistent with the angular velocity of the wheel were adopted for further analysis. In the developed expert system, the Kamada–Kawai model was used to arrange the nodes of the decision tree graph. Based on the developed database containing learning and testing data for each vehicle speed and wheel balance condition, the probability of the wheel imbalance condition was determined. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that the highest probability of identifying wheel imbalance equal to almost 100% was obtained in the vehicle speed range of 50 km/h to 70 km/h. This is known as the pre-resonance range in relation to the eigenfrequency of the wheel vibrations. As the vehicle speed increases, the accuracy of the data classification for identifying wheel imbalance in relation to the learning data decreases to 50% for the speed of 90 km/h. The increasing geriatric population across the world has necessitated the early detection of frailty through the analysis of daily-life behavioral patterns. This paper presents a system for ambient, automatic, and the continuous measurement and analysis of ascent and descent motions and long-term handrail-use behaviors of participants in their homes using an RGB-D camera. The system automatically stores information regarding the environment and three-dimensional skeletal coordinates of the participant only when they appear within the camera's angle of view. Daily stair ascent and descent motions were measured in two houses: one house with two participants in their 20s and two in their 50s, and another with two participants in their 70s. The recorded behaviors were analyzed in terms of the stair ascent/descent speed, handrail grasping points, and frequency determined using the decision tree algorithm. The participants in their 70s exhibited a decreased stair ascent/descent speed compared to other participants; those in their 50s and 70s exhibited increased handrail usage area and frequency. The outcomes of the study indicate the system's ability to accurately detect a decline in physical function through the continuous measurement of daily stair ascent and descent motions. The article presents the implementation of artificial intelligence algorithms for the problem of discretization in Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) adapted for urinary tract monitoring. The primary objective of discretization is to create a finite element mesh (FEM) classifier that will separate the inclusion elements from the background. In general, the classifier is designed to detect the area of elements belonging to an inclusion revealing the shape of that object. We show the adaptation of supervised learning methods such as logistic regression, decision trees, linear and quadratic discriminant analysis to the problem of tracking the urinary bladder using EIT. Our study focuses on developing and comparing various algorithms for discretization, which perfectly supplement methods for an inverse problem. The innovation of the presented solutions lies in the originally adapted algorithms for EIT allowing for the tracking of the bladder. We claim that a robust measurement solution with sensors and statistical methods can track the placement and shape change of the bladder, leading to effective information about the studied object. This article also shows the developed device, its functions and working principle. The development of such a device and accompanying information technology came about in response to particularly strong market demand for modern technical solutions for urinary tract rehabilitation. In wells that operate by electrical submersible pump (ESP), the use of automation tools becomes essential in the interpretation of data. However, the fact that the wells work with automated systems does not guarantee the early diagnosis of operating conditions. The analysis of amperimetric charts is one of the ways to identify fail conditions. Generally, the analysis of these histographics is performed by operators who are often overloaded, generating a decrease in the efficiency of observing the well operating conditions. Currently, technologies based on machine learning (ML) algorithms create solutions to early diagnose abnormalities in the well's operation. Thus, this work aims to provide a proposal for detecting the operating conditions of the ESP pump from electrical current data from 24 wells in the city of Mossoró, Rio Grande do Norte state, Brazil. The algorithms used were Decision Tree, Support Vector Machine, K-Nearest Neighbor and Neural Network. The algorithms were tested without and with hyperparameter tuning based on a training dataset. The results confirm that the application of the ML algorithm is feasible for classifying the operating conditions of the ESP pump, as all had an accuracy greater than 87%, with the best result being the application of the SVM model, which reached an accuracy of 93%. This paper proposes a novel method for the calibration of a stereo camera system used to reconstruct 3D scenes. An error in the pitch angle of the cameras causes the reconstructed scene to exhibit some distortion with respect to the real scene. To do the calibration procedure, whose purpose is to eliminate or at least minimize said distortion, machine learning techniques have been used, and more specifically, regression algorithms. These algorithms are trained with a large number of vectors of input features with their respective outputs, since, in view of the application of the procedure proposed, it is important that the training set be sufficiently representative of the variety that can occur in a real scene, which includes the different orientations that the pitch angle can take, the error in said angle and the effect that all this has on the reconstruction process. The most efficient regression algorithms for estimating the error in the pitch angle are derived from decision trees and certain neural network configurations. Once estimated, the error can be corrected, thus making the reconstructed scene appear more like the real one. Climate change is a shift in nature yet a devastating phenomenon, mainly caused by human activities, sometimes with the intent to generate usable energy required in humankind's daily life. Addressing this alarming issue requires an urge for energy consumption evaluation. Predicting energy consumption is essential for determining what factors affect a site's energy usage and in turn, making actionable suggestions to reduce wasteful energy consumption. Recently, a rising number of researchers have applied machine learning in various fields, such as wind turbine performance prediction, energy consumption prediction, thermal behavior analysis, and more. In this research study, using data publicly made available by the Women in Data Science (WiDS) Datathon 2022 (contains data on building characteristics and information collected by sensors), after appropriate data preparation, we experimented four main machine learning methods (random forest (RF), gradient boost decision tree (GBDT), support vector regressor (SVR), and decision tree for regression (DT)). The most performant model was selected using evaluation metrics: root mean square error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE). The reported results proved the robustness of the proposed concept in capturing the insight and hidden patterns in the dataset, and effectively predicting the energy usage of buildings. The event sensor provides high temporal resolution and generates large amounts of raw event data. Efficient low-complexity coding solutions are required for integration into low-power event-processing chips with limited memory. In this paper, a novel lossless compression method is proposed for encoding the event data represented as asynchronous event sequences. The proposed method employs only low-complexity coding techniques so that it is suitable for hardware implementation into low-power event-processing chips. A first, novel, contribution consists of a low-complexity coding scheme which uses a decision tree to reduce the representation range of the residual error. The decision tree is formed by using a triplet threshold parameter which divides the input data range into several coding ranges arranged at concentric distances from an initial prediction, so that the residual error of the true value information is represented by using a reduced number of bits. Another novel contribution consists of an improved representation, which divides the input sequence into same-timestamp subsequences, wherein each subsequence collects the same timestamp events in ascending order of the largest dimension of the event spatial information. The proposed same-timestamp representation replaces the event timestamp information with the same-timestamp subsequence length and encodes it together with the event spatial and polarity information into a different bitstream. Another novel contribution is the random access to any time window by using additional header information. The experimental evaluation on a highly variable event density dataset demonstrates that the proposed low-complexity lossless coding method provides an average improvement of 5.49 % , 11.45 % , and 35.57 % compared with the state-of-the-art performance-oriented lossless data compression codecs Bzip2, LZMA, and ZLIB, respectively. Current research concerning the repeatability of the joint's sounds examination in the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) is inconclusive; thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the repeatability of the specific features of the vibroarthrogram (VAG) in the TMJ using accelerometers. The joint sounds of both TMJs were measured with VAG accelerometers in two groups, study and control, each consisting of 47 participants (n = 94). Two VAG recording sessions consisted of 10 jaw open/close cycles guided by a metronome. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was calculated for seven VAG signal features. Additionally, a k-nearest-neighbors (KNN) classifier was defined and compared with a state-of-the-art method (joint vibration analysis (JVA) decision tree). ICC indicated excellent (for the integral below 300 Hz feature), good (total integral, integral above 300 Hz, and median frequency features), moderate (integral below to integral above 300 Hz ratio feature) and poor (peak amplitude feature) reliability. The accuracy scores for the KNN classifier (up to 0.81) were higher than those for the JVA decision tree (up to 0.60). The results of this study could open up a new field of research focused on the features of the vibroarthrogram in the context of the TMJ, further improving the diagnosing process. Diabetes is a heterogeneous group of diseases that share a common trait of elevated blood glucose levels. Insulin lowers this level by promoting glucose utilization, thus avoiding short- and long-term organ damage due to the elevated blood glucose level. A patient with diabetes uses an insulin pump to dose insulin. The pump uses a controller to compute and dose the correct amount of insulin to keep blood glucose levels in a safe range. Insulin-pump controller development is an ongoing process aiming at fully closed-loop control. Controllers entering the market must be evaluated for safety. We propose an evaluation method that exploits an FDA-approved diabetic patient simulator. The method evaluates a Cartesian product of individual insulin-pump parameters with a fine degree of granularity. As this is a computationally intensive task, the simulator executes on a distributed cluster. We identify safe and risky combinations of insulin-pump parameter settings by applying the binomial model and decision tree to this product. As a result, we obtain a tool for insulin-pump settings and controller safety assessment. In this paper, we demonstrate the tool with the Low-Glucose Suspend and OpenAPS controllers. For average ± standard deviation, LGS and OpenAPS exhibited 1.7 ± 0.6% and 3.2 ± 1.8% of local extrema (i.e., good insulin-pump settings) out of all the entire Cartesian products, respectively. A continuous region around the best-discovered settings (i.e., the global extremum) of the insulin-pump settings spread across 4.0 ± 1.1% and 4.1 ± 1.3% of the Cartesian products, respectively. Connectivity and automation have expanded with the development of autonomous vehicle technology. One of several automotive serial protocols that can be used in a wide range of vehicles is the controller area network (CAN). The growing functionality and connectivity of modern vehicles make them more vulnerable to cyberattacks aimed at vehicular networks. The CAN bus protocol is vulnerable to numerous attacks, as it is lacking security mechanisms by design. It is crucial to design intrusion detection systems (IDS) with high accuracy to detect attacks on the CAN bus. In this paper, we design an effective machine learning-based IDS scheme for binary classification that utilizes eight supervised ML algorithms, along with ensemble classifiers. The scheme achieved a higher effectiveness score in detecting normal and abnormal activities when trained with normal and malicious CAN traffic datasets. Random Forest, Decision Tree, and Xtreme Gradient Boosting classifiers provided the most accurate results. Then we evaluated three ensemble methods, voting, stacking, and bagging, for this classification task. The ensemble classifiers achieved better accuracy than the individual models, since ensemble learning strategies have superior performance through a combination of multiple learning mechanisms. These mechanisms have a varied range of capabilities that improve the prediction reliability while lowering the possibility of classification errors. This paper proposes a three-computing-layer architecture consisting of Edge, Fog, and Cloud for remote health vital signs monitoring. The novelty of this architecture is in using the Narrow-Band IoT (NB-IoT) for communicating with a large number of devices and covering large areas with minimum power consumption. Additionally, the architecture reduces the communication delay as the edge layer serves the health terminal devices with initial decisions and prioritizes data transmission for minimizing congestion on base stations. The paper also investigates different authentication protocols for improving security while maintaining low computation and transmission time. For data analysis, different machine learning algorithms, such as decision tree, support vector machines, and logistic regression, are used on the three layers. The proposed architecture is evaluated using CloudSim, iFogSim, and ns3-NB-IoT on real data consisting of medical vital signs. The results show that the proposed architecture reduces the NB-IoT delay by 59.9%, the execution time by an average of 38.5%, and authentication time by 35.1% for a large number of devices. Extracting useful knowledge from proper data analysis is a very challenging task for efficient and timely decision-making. To achieve this, there exist a plethora of machine learning (ML) algorithms, while, especially in healthcare, this complexity increases due to the domain's requirements for analytics-based risk predictions. This manuscript proposes a data analysis mechanism experimented in diverse healthcare scenarios, towards constructing a catalogue of the most efficient ML algorithms to be used depending on the healthcare scenario's requirements and datasets, for efficiently predicting the onset of a disease. To this context, seven (7) different ML algorithms (Naïve Bayes, K-Nearest Neighbors, Decision Tree, Logistic Regression, Random Forest, Neural Networks, Stochastic Gradient Descent) have been executed on top of diverse healthcare scenarios (stroke, COVID-19, diabetes, breast cancer, kidney disease, heart failure). Based on a variety of performance metrics (accuracy, recall, precision, F1-score, specificity, confusion matrix), it has been identified that a sub-set of ML algorithms are more efficient for timely predictions under specific healthcare scenarios, and that is why the envisioned ML catalogue prioritizes the ML algorithms to be used, depending on the scenarios' nature and needed metrics. Further evaluation must be performed considering additional scenarios, involving state-of-the-art techniques (e.g., cloud deployment, federated ML) for improving the mechanism's efficiency. Determining environmental chemical carcinogenicity is urgently needed as humans are increasingly exposed to these chemicals. In this study, we developed a hybrid neural network (HNN) method called HNN-Cancer to predict potential carcinogens of real-life chemicals. The HNN-Cancer included a new SMILES feature representation method by modifying our previous 3D array representation of 1D SMILES simulated by the convolutional neural network (CNN). We developed binary classification, multiclass classification, and regression models based on diverse non-congeneric chemicals. Along with the HNN-Cancer model, we developed models based on the random forest (RF), bootstrap aggregating (Bagging), and adaptive boosting (AdaBoost) methods for binary and multiclass classification. We developed regression models using HNN-Cancer, RF, support vector regressor (SVR), gradient boosting (GB), kernel ridge (KR), decision tree with AdaBoost (DT), KNeighbors (KN), and a consensus method. The performance of the models for all classifications was assessed using various statistical metrics. The accuracy of the HNN-Cancer, RF, and Bagging models were 74%, and their AUC was ~0.81 for binary classification models developed with 7994 chemicals. The sensitivity was 79.5% and the specificity was 67.3% for the HNN-Cancer, which outperforms the other methods. In the case of multiclass classification models with 1618 chemicals, we obtained the optimal accuracy of 70% with an AUC 0.7 for HNN-Cancer, RF, Bagging, and AdaBoost, respectively. In the case of regression models, the correlation coefficient (R) was around 0.62 for HNN-Cancer and RF higher than the SVM, GB, KR, DTBoost, and NN machine learning methods. Overall, the HNN-Cancer performed better for the majority of the known carcinogen experimental datasets. Further, the predictive performance of HNN-Cancer on diverse chemicals is comparable to the literature-reported models that included similar and less diverse molecules. Despite the great technological advances in ADAS, autonomous driving still faces many challenges. Among them is improving decision-making algorithms so that vehicles can make the right decision inspired by human driving. Not only must these decisions ensure the safety of the car occupants and the other road users, but they have to be understandable by them. This article focuses on decision-making algorithms for autonomous vehicles, specifically for lane changing on highways and sub-urban roads. The challenge to overcome is to develop a decision-making algorithm that combines fidelity to human behavior and that is based on machine learning, with a global structure that allows understanding the behavior of the algorithm and that is not opaque such as black box algorithms. To this end, a three-step decision-making method was developed: trajectory prediction of the surrounding vehicles, risk and gain computation associated with the maneuver and based on the predicted trajectories, and finally decision making. For the decision making, three algorithms: decision tree, random forest, and artificial neural network are proposed and compared based on a naturalistic driving database and a driving simulator. Robot assembly tasks can fail due to unpredictable errors and can only continue with the manual intervention of a human operator. Recently, we proposed an exception strategy learning framework based on statistical learning and context determination, which can successfully resolve such situations. This paper deals with context determination from multimodal data, which is the key component of our framework. We propose a novel approach to generate unified low-dimensional context descriptions based on image and force-torque data. For this purpose, we combine a state-of-the-art neural network model for image segmentation and contact point estimation using force-torque measurements. An ensemble of decision trees is used to combine features from the two modalities. To validate the proposed approach, we have collected datasets of deliberately induced insertion failures both for the classic peg-in-hole insertion task and for an industrially relevant task of car starter assembly. A recent increase in the importance of Rare Earth Elements (REEs), proportional to advancements in modern technology, green energy, and defense, has urged researchers to look for more sophisticated and efficient exploration methods for their host rocks, such as carbonatites. Hyperspectral remote sensing has long been recognized as having great potential to identify the REEs based on their sharp and distinctive absorption features in the visible near-infrared (VNIR) and shortwave infrared (SWIR) electromagnetic spectral profiles. For instance, neodymium (Nd), one of the most abundant Light Rare Earth Elements (LREEs), has among the most distinctive absorption features of REEs in the VNIR part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Centered at ~580, ~745, ~810, and ~870 nm in the VNIR, the positions of these absorption features have been proved to be independent of the mineralogy that hosts Nd, and the features can be observed in samples as low in Nd as 1000 ppm. In this study, a neodymium index (NI) is proposed based on the 810 nm absorption feature and tested on the hyperspectral images of the Sillai Patai carbonatite samples to identify Nd pixels and to decipher the relative concentration of Nd in the samples based on the depth of the absorption feature. A preliminary spectral study of the carbonatite samples was carried out using a spectroradiometer to determine the presence of Nd in the samples. Only two of the absorption features of Nd, centered at ~745 and ~810 nm, are prominent in the Nd-rich samples. The other absorption features are either weak or suppressed by the featureless spectra of the associated minerals. Similar absorption features are found in the VNIR and SWIR images of the rock samples captured by the laboratory-based hyperspectral cameras that are processed through Minimum Noise Fraction (MNF) and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) to filter the signal and noise from the reflectance data. An RGB false-color composite of continuum-removed VNIR reflectance bands covering wavelengths of 587.5, 747.91, and 810.25 nm efficiently displayed the spatial distribution of Nd-rich hotspots in the hyperspectral image. The depth of the 810 nm absorption feature, which corresponds to the concentration of Nd in a pixel, is comparatively greater in these zones and is quantified using the proposed NI such that the deeper the absorption feature, the higher the NI. To quantify the Nd-rich pixels in the continuum-removed VNIR images, different threshold values of NI are introduced into a decision tree classifier which generates the number of pixels in each class. The strength of the proposed NI coupled with the decision tree classifier is further supported by the accuracy assessment of the classified images generating the Kappa coefficient of 0.82. Comparing the results of the remote sensing data obtained in this study with some of the previously published studies suggests that the Sillai Patti carbonatite is rich in Nd and associated REEs, with some parts of the samples as high in Nd concentration as 1000 ppm. Human activity monitoring is a fascinating area of research to support autonomous living in the aged and disabled community. Cameras, sensors, wearables, and non-contact microwave sensing have all been suggested in the past as methods for identifying distinct human activities. Microwave sensing is an approach that has lately attracted much interest since it has the potential to address privacy problems caused by cameras and discomfort caused by wearables, especially in the healthcare domain. A fundamental drawback of the current microwave sensing methods such as radar is non-line-of-sight and multi-floor environments. They need precise and regulated conditions to detect activity with high precision. In this paper, we have utilised the publicly available online database based on the intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) system developed at the Communications, Sensing and Imaging group at the University of Glasgow, UK (references 39 and 40). The IRS system works better in the multi-floor and non-line-of-sight environments. This work for the first time uses algorithms such as support vector machine Bagging and Decision Tree on the publicly available IRS data and achieves better accuracy when a subset of the available data is considered along specific human activities. Secondary infections of early blight during potato crop season are conditioned by aerial inoculum. However, although aerobiological studies have focused on understanding the key factors that influence the spore concentration in the air, less work has been carried out to predict when critical concentrations of conidia occur. Therefore, the goals of this study were to understand the key weather variables that affect the hourly and daily conidia dispersal of Alternaria solani and A. alternata in a potato field, and to use these weather factors in different machine learning (ML) algorithms to predict the daily conidia levels. This study showed that conidia per hour in a day is influenced by the weather conditions that characterize the hour, but not the hour of the day. Specifically, the relative humidity and solar radiation were the most relevant weather parameters influencing the conidia concentration in the air and both in a linear model explained 98% of the variation of this concentration per hour. Moreover, the dew point temperature three days before was the weather variable with the strongest effect on conidia per day. An improved prediction of Alternaria conidia level was achieved via ML algorithms when the conidia of previous days is considered in the analysis. Diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases is an urgent task because they are the main cause of death for 32% of the world's population. Particularly relevant are automated diagnostics using machine learning methods in the digitalization of healthcare and introduction of personalized medicine in healthcare institutions, including at the individual level when designing smart houses. Therefore, this study aims to analyze short 10-s electrocardiogram measurements taken from 12 leads. In addition, the task is to classify patients with suspected myocardial infarction using machine learning methods. We have developed four models based on the k-nearest neighbor classifier, radial basis function, decision tree, and random forest to do this. An analysis of time parameters showed that the most significant parameters for diagnosing myocardial infraction are SDNN, BPM, and IBI. An experimental investigation was conducted on the data of the open PTB-XL dataset for patients with suspected myocardial infarction. The results showed that, according to the parameters of the short ECG, it is possible to classify patients with a suspected myocardial infraction as sick and healthy with high accuracy. The optimized Random Forest model showed the best performance with an accuracy of 99.63%, and a root mean absolute error is less than 0.004. Using implicit responses to determine consumers' response to different stimuli is becoming a popular approach, but research is still needed to understand the outputs of the different technologies used to collect data. During the present research, electroencephalography (EEG) responses and self-reported liking and emotions were collected on different stimuli (odor, taste, flavor samples) to better understand sweetness perception. Artificial intelligence analytics were used to classify the implicit responses, identifying decision trees to discriminate the stimuli by activated sensory system (odor/taste/flavor) and by nature of the stimuli ('sweet' vs. 'non-sweet' odors; 'sweet-taste', 'sweet-flavor', and 'non-sweet flavor'; and 'sweet stimuli' vs. 'non-sweet stimuli'). Significant differences were found among self-reported-liking of the stimuli and the emotions elicited by the stimuli, but no clear relationship was identified between explicit and implicit data. The present research sums interesting data for the EEG-linked research as well as for EEG data analysis, although much is still unknown about how to properly exploit implicit measurement technologies and their data. Physical exercise has become an essential tool for treating various non-communicable diseases (also known as chronic diseases). Due to this, physical exercise allows to counter different symptoms and reduce some risk of death factors without medication. A solution to support people in doing exercises is to use artificial systems that monitor their exercise progress. While one crucial aspect is to monitor the correct physical motions for rehabilitative exercise, another essential element is to give encouraging feedback during workouts. A coaching system can track a user's exhaustion and give motivating feedback accordingly to boost exercise adherence. For this purpose, this research investigates whether it is possible to predict the subjective exhaustion level based on non-invasive and non-wearable technology. A novel data set was recorded with the facial record as the primary predictor and individual exhaustion levels as the predicted variable. 60 participants (30 male, 30 female) took part in the data recording. 17 facial action units (AU) were extracted as predictor variables for the perceived subjective exhaustion measured using the BORG scale. Using the predictor and the target variables, several regression and classification methods were evaluated aiming to predict exhaustion. The results showed that the decision tree and support vector methods provide reasonable prediction results. The limitation of the results, depending on participants being in the training data set and subjective variables (e.g., participants smiling during the exercises) were further discussed.
