Smart cities require interactive management of water supply networks and water meters play an important role in such a task. As compared to fully mechanical water meters, electromechanical water meters or fully electronic water meters can collect real-time information through automatic meter reading (AMR), which makes them more suitable for smart cities applications. In this paper, we first study the design principles of existing water meters, and then present our design and implementation of a self-powered smart water meter. The proposed water meter is based on a water turbine generator, which serves for two purposes: (i) to sense the water flow through adaptive signal processing performed on the generated voltage; and (ii) to produce electricity to charge batteries for the smart meter to function properly. In particular, we present the design considerations and implementation details. The wireless transceiver is integrated in the proposed water meter so that it can provide real-time water flow information. A Hybrid LiFi and WiFi network (HLWNet) integrates the rapid data transmission capabilities of Light Fidelity (LiFi) with the extensive connectivity provided by Wireless Fidelity (WiFi), resulting in significant benefits for wireless data transmissions in the designated area. However, the challenge of decision-making during the handover process in HLWNet is made more complex due to the specific characteristics of electromagnetic signals' line-of-sight transmission, resulting in a greater level of intricacy compared to previous heterogeneous networks. This research work addresses the problem of handover decisions in the Hybrid LiFi and WiFi networks and treats it as a binary classification problem. Consequently, it proposes a handover method based on a deep neural network (DNN). The comprehensive handover scheme incorporates two sets of neural networks (ANN and DNN) that utilize input factors such as channel quality and the mobility of users to enable informed decisions during handovers. Following training with labeled datasets, the neural-network-based handover approach achieves an accuracy rate exceeding 95%. A comparative analysis of the proposed scheme against the benchmark reveals that the proposed method considerably increases user throughput by approximately 18.58% to 38.5% while reducing the handover rate by approximately 55.21% to 67.15% compared to the benchmark artificial neural network (ANN); moreover, the proposed method demonstrates robustness in the face of variations in user mobility and channel conditions. Globally, the increases in vehicle numbers, traffic congestion, and road accidents are serious issues. Autonomous vehicles (AVs) traveling in platoons provide innovative solutions for efficient traffic flow management, especially for congestion mitigation, thus reducing accidents. In recent years, platoon-based driving, also known as vehicle platoon, has emerged as an extensive research area. Vehicle platooning reduces travel time and increases road capacity by reducing the safety distance between vehicles. For connected and automated vehicles, cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) systems and platoon management systems play a significant role. Platoon vehicles can maintain a closer safety distance due to CACC systems, which are based on vehicle status data obtained through vehicular communications. This paper proposes an adaptive traffic flow and collision avoidance approach for vehicular platoons based on CACC. The proposed approach considers the creation and evolution of platoons to govern the traffic flow during congestion and avoid collisions in uncertain situations. Different obstructing scenarios are identified during travel, and solutions to these challenging situations are proposed. The merge and join maneuvers are performed to help the platoon's steady movement. A Software Defined Vehicular Network (SDVN) is a new paradigm that enhances programmability and flexibility in Vehicular Adhoc Networks (VANETs). There exist different architectures for SDVNs based on the degree of control of the control plane. However, in vehicular communication literature, we find that there is no proper mechanism to collect data. Therefore, we propose a novel data collection methodology for the hybrid SDVN architecture by modeling it as an Integer Quadratic Programming (IQP) problem. The IQP model optimally selects broadcasting nodes and agent (unicasting) nodes from a given vehicular network instance with the objective of minimizing the number of agents, communication delay, communication cost, total payload, and total overhead. Due to the dynamic network topology, finding a new solution to the optimization is frequently required in order to avoid node isolation and redundant data transmission. Therefore, we propose a systematic way to collect data and make optimization decisions by inspecting the heterogeneous normalized network link entropy. The proposed optimization model for data collection for the hybrid SDVN architecture yields a 75.5% lower communication cost and 32.7% lower end-to-end latency in large vehicular networks compared to the data collection in the centralized SDVN architecture while collecting 99.9% of the data available in the vehicular network under optimized settings. Aphasia is a type of speech disorder that can cause speech defects in a person. Identifying the severity level of the aphasia patient is critical for the rehabilitation process. In this research, we identify ten aphasia severity levels motivated by specific speech therapies based on the presence or absence of identified characteristics in aphasic speech in order to give more specific treatment to the patient. In the aphasia severity level classification process, we experiment on different speech feature extraction techniques, lengths of input audio samples, and machine learning classifiers toward classification performance. Aphasic speech is required to be sensed by an audio sensor and then recorded and divided into audio frames and passed through an audio feature extractor before feeding into the machine learning classifier. According to the results, the mel frequency cepstral coefficient (MFCC) is the most suitable audio feature extraction method for the aphasic speech level classification process, as it outperformed the classification performance of all mel-spectrogram, chroma, and zero crossing rates by a large margin. Furthermore, the classification performance is higher when 20 s audio samples are used compared with 10 s chunks, even though the performance gap is narrow. Finally, the deep neural network approach resulted in the best classification performance, which was slightly better than both K-nearest neighbor (KNN) and random forest classifiers, and it was significantly better than decision tree algorithms. Therefore, the study shows that aphasia level classification can be completed with accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score values of 0.99 using MFCC for 20 s audio samples using the deep neural network approach in order to recommend corresponding speech therapy for the identified level. Light Fidelity (LiFi) is a new candidate for wireless networking that utilizes the visible light spectrum and exploits the existing lighting infrastructure in the form of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). It provides point-to-point and point-to-multipoint communication on a bidirectional channel at very high data rates. However, the LiFi has small coverage, and its optical gain is closely related to the receiver's directionality vis-à-vis the transmitter, therefore it can experience frequent service outages. To provide reliable coverage, the LiFi is integrated with other networking technologies such as wireless fidelity (WiFi) thus forming a hybrid system. The hybrid LiFi/WiFi system faces many challenges including but not limited to seamless integration with the WiFi, support for mobility, handover management, resource sharing, and load balancing. The existing literature has addressed one or the other aspect of the issues facing LiFi systems. There are limited free source tools available to holistically address these challenges in a scalable manner. To this end, we have developed an open-source simulation framework based on the network simulator 3 (ns-3), which realizes critical aspects of the LiFi wireless network. Our developed ns-3 LiFi framework provides a fully functional AP equipped with the physical layer and medium access control (MAC), a mobility model for the user device, and integration between LiFi and WiFi with a handover facility. Simulation results are produced to demonstrate the mobility and handover capabilities, and the performance gains from the LiFi-WiFi hybrid system in terms of packet delay, throughput, packet drop ratio (PDR), and fairness between users. A partial receiving scheme based on limited angular aperture multi-beam receiving and demultiplexing can solve the difficulty caused by the divergence of the vortex beam in the conventional whole beam receiving scheme and realize the long-distance transmission of the vortex wave. The propagation of the radio vortex beam in atmospheric turbulence is of significant importance in theoretical study and practical applications. In this paper, the influence of atmospheric turbulence on the performance of a radio vortex (RV) communication system based on a partial angular aperture receiving (PAAR) scheme under the horizontal non-Kolmogorov channel model is studied. The spiral spectrum of the PAAR scheme and the channel capacity of the RV communication system using the PAAR scheme are derived. Simulation results demonstrate that the selected transmission frequency range has a great influence on the RV communication system based on the PAAR scheme, and the choice of the orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode number L has an influence on the propagation distance. The capacity of RV communication systems based on the PAAR scheme increases with the increase of the transmission frequency in the selected transmission frequency range of 10 GHz–60 GHz. When the number of orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes L is small, we can improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) to obtain a larger capacity of the RV communication system based on the PAAR scheme over a longer propagation distance. Visible light communication (VLC) is a new paradigm that could revolutionise the future of wireless communication. In VLC, information is transmitted through modulating the visible light spectrum (400–700 nm) that is used for illumination. Analytical and experimental work has shown the potential of VLC to provide high-speed data communication with the added advantage of improved energy efficiency and communication security/privacy. VLC is still in the early phase of research. There are fewer review articles published on this topic mostly addressing the physical layer research. The Fifth Generation (5G) mobile networks use millimeter waves (mmWaves) to offer gigabit data rates. However, unlike microwaves, mmWave links are prone to user and topographic dynamics. They easily get blocked and end up forming irregular cell patterns for 5G. This in turn causes too early, too late, or wrong handoffs (HOs). To mitigate HO challenges, sustain connectivity, and avert unnecessary HO, we propose an HO scheme based on a jump Markov linear system (JMLS) and deep reinforcement learning (DRL). JMLS is widely known to account for abrupt changes in system dynamics. DRL likewise emerges as an artificial intelligence technique for learning highly dimensional and time-varying behaviors. We combine the two techniques to account for time-varying, abrupt, and irregular changes in mmWave link behavior by predicting likely deterioration patterns of target links. The prediction is optimized by meta training techniques that also reduce training sample size. Thus, the JMLS–DRL platform formulates intelligent and versatile HO policies for 5G. When compared to a signal and interference noise ratio (SINR) and DRL-based HO scheme, our HO scheme becomes more reliable in selecting reliable target links. In particular, our proposed scheme is able to reduce wasteful HO to less than 5% within 200 training episodes compared to the DRL-based HO scheme that needs more than 200 training episodes to get to less than 5%. Although log processing of network equipment is a common technique in cellular network management, several factors make said task challenging, especially during mass attendance events. The present paper assesses classic methods for cellular network measurement and acquisition, showing how the use of on-the-field user probes can provide relevant capabilities to the analysis of cellular network performance. Therefore, a framework for the deployment of this kind of system is proposed here based on the development of a new hardware virtualization platform with radio frequency capabilities. Accordingly, an analysis of the characteristics and requirements for the use of virtual probes was performed. Moreover, the impact that social events (e.g., sports matches) may have on the service provision was evaluated through a real cellular scenario. For this purpose, a long-term measurement study during crowded events (i.e., football matches) in a stadium has been conducted, and the performances of different services and operators under realistic settings has been evaluated. The arrival of the Fifth Generation (5G) entails a significant evolution in the context of mobile communication networks. This new technology will bring heterogeneous scenarios with new types of services and an increasingly high number of users and nodes. The efficient management of such complex networks has become an important challenge. To address this problem, automatic and efficient algorithms must be developed to facilitate operators' management and optimization of their networks. These algorithms must be able to cope with a very high number of heterogeneous data and different types of scenarios. In this paper, a novel framework for a cellular network behavioral analysis and monitoring is presented. This framework is based on a combination of unsupervised and supervised machine learning techniques. The proposed system can analyze the behavior of cells and monitor them, searching for behavior changes over time. With the booming development of high-speed railways (HSRs), key technologies of wireless communications need to be constantly innovated. In particular, the frontier issue of low delay of the handover for the fifth generation (5G) in fast-moving scenarios has attracted attention from both industry and academia. Based on an analysis of a large number of measured data and the location of the user equipment (UE), a fast handover algorithm is proposed to solve the problem of long delay for a train moving at high speed in a 5G-railway (5G-R). By calculating the speed of a train and its direction of movement, a reasonable handover mode is selected and the handover chain of neighboring cells is identified. The location of the train can be calculated to determine whether UE enters the defined identification zone of pre-handover. Depending on the values collected in the measurement report, the command of the handover is triggered when the weight of the target cell is greater than that of the source cell. Our experimental results show that the delay of the fast handover algorithm is reduced by 2.03%, and the success rate of the handover is increased by 0.42%. Smart objects are deployed globally, contributing to improved communications and the growth of industrial systems' performances. Unfortunately, isolated territories are generally excluded from this progress. Remote areas in Canada are no exception. Thus, about two hundred thousand people are living in isolated regions in Canadian territory. The development of these communities is slowed down not only by an outdated energy supply, but they are also dependent on telecommunication systems not fully deployed in those regions, thus contributing to the amplification of those populations' isolation. Furthermore, the magnetic field in some regions of the planet and very often in isolated areas undergoes partial or total absorption, known as white areas, making the propagation of the signal very delicate. As a part of this article, a state of the art of telecommunication solutions available in an isolated environment is applied with a critical analysis based on several criteria. It shows the ability to use an original approach based on a captive balloon. Despite the proposed solution's feasibility, several challenges need to be addressed before formally adopting it. These challenges include: (i) controlling the height of the balloon; (ii) stabilization of the balloon; and (iii) powering the system. Computation offloading is a process that provides computing services to vehicles with computation sensitive jobs. Volunteer Computing-Based Vehicular Ad-hoc Networking (VCBV) is envisioned as a promising solution to perform task executions in vehicular networks using an emerging concept known as vehicle-as-a-resource (VaaR). In VCBV systems, offloading is the primary technique used for the execution of delay-sensitive applications which rely on surplus resource utilization. To leverage the surplus resources arising in periods of traffic congestion, we propose a hybrid VCBV task coordination model which performs the resource utilization for task execution in a multi-hop fashion. We propose an algorithm for the determination of boundary relay vehicles to minimize the requirement of placement for multiple road-side units (RSUs). We propose algorithms for primary and secondary task coordination using hybrid VCBV. A combined edge and core cloud computing environment is a novel solution in 5G network slices. The clients' high availability requirement is a challenge because it limits the possible admission control in front of the edge cloud. This work proposes an orchestrator with a mathematical programming model in a global viewpoint to solve resource management problems and satisfying the clients' high availability requirements. The proposed Lagrangian relaxation-based approach is adopted to solve the problems at a near-optimal level for increasing the system revenue. A promising and straightforward resource management approach and several experimental cases are used to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness. Preliminary results are presented as performance evaluations to verify the proposed approach's suitability for edge and core cloud computing environments. Structureless communications such as Device-to-Device (D2D) relaying are undeniably of paramount importance to improving the performance of today's mobile networks. Such a communication paradigm requires a certain level of intelligence at the device level, thereby allowing it to interact with the environment and make proper decisions. However, decentralizing decision-making may induce paradoxical outcomes, resulting in a drop in performance, which sustains the design of self-organizing yet efficient systems. We propose that each device decides either to directly connect to the eNodeB or get access via another device through a D2D link. In the first part of this article, we describe a biform game framework to analyze the proposed self-organized system's performance, under pure and mixed strategies. We use two reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms, enabling devices to self-organize and learn their pure/mixed equilibrium strategies in a fully distributed fashion. Decentralized RL algorithms are shown to play an important role in allowing devices to be self-organized and reach satisfactory performance with incomplete information or even under uncertainties. The vast amounts of mobile communication data collected by mobile operators can provide important insights regarding epidemic transmission or traffic patterns. By analyzing historical data and extracting user location information, various methods can be used to predict the mobility of mobile users. However, existing prediction algorithms are mainly based on the historical data of all users at an aggregated level and ignore the heterogeneity of individual behavior patterns. To improve prediction accuracy, this paper proposes a weighted Markov prediction model based on mobile user classification. The trajectory information of a user is extracted first by analyzing real mobile communication data, where the complexity of a user's trajectory is measured using the mobile trajectory entropy. Second, classification criteria are proposed based on different user behavior patterns, and all users are classified with machine learning algorithms. Finally, according to the characteristics of each user classification, the step threshold and the weighting coefficients of the weighted Markov prediction model are optimized, and mobility prediction is performed for each user classification. A mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is a set of autonomous mobile devices connected by wireless links in a distributed manner and without a fixed infrastructure. Real-time multimedia services, such as video-streaming over MANETs, offers very promising applications, e.g., two members of a group of tourists who want to share a video transmitted through the MANET they form, a video-streaming service deployed over a MANET where users watch a film, among other examples. On the other hand, social web technologies, where people actively interact online with others through social networks, are leading to a socialization of networks. Information of interaction among users is being used to provide socially-enhanced software. To achieve this, we need to know the strength of the relationship between a given user and each user they interact with. This strength of the relationship can be measured through a concept called tie strength (TS), first introduced by Mark Granovetter in 1973. In this article, we modify our previous proposal named multipath multimedia dynamic source routing (MMDSR) protocol to include a social metric TS in the decisions taken by the forwarding algorithm. We find a trade-off between the quality of service (QoS) and the trust level between users who form the forwarding path in the MANET. Chest wall motion can provide information on critical vital signs, including respiration and heartbeat. Mathematical modelling of chest wall motion can reduce an extensive requirement of human testing in the development of many biomedical applications. In this paper, we propose a mathematical model that simulates a chest wall motion due to cardiorespiratory activity. Chest wall motion due to respiration is simulated based on the optimal chemical–mechanical respiratory control-based mechanics. The theory of relaxation oscillation system is applied to model the motion due to cardiac activity.
