Due to its multi-mode and dispersion characteristics, Lamb waves cause interference to signal processing, which profoundly limits their application in nondestructive testing. To resolve this issue, firstly, based on the traditional EMAT, a horizontal polarization periodic permanent magnet electromagnetic acoustic transducer (HP-PPM-EMAT) was proposed. A 2-D finite element model was then developed to compare magnetic flux density, Lorentz force, and signal strength between the traditional EMAT and the HP-PPM-EMAT. The simulation results show that the HP-PPM-EMAT enhances the A0 mode Lamb wave (A0 wave) and suppresses the S0 mode Lamb wave (S0 wave). Finally, the influence of structural parameters of the HP-PPM-EMAT on the total displacement amplitude ratio of A0 and S0 was investigated using orthogonal test theory, and the width of magnet units was improved based on the orthogonal test. The results show that the total displacement amplitude ratio of A0 to S0 of the improved HP-PPM-EMAT can be improved by a factor of 7.74 compared with that of the traditional Lamb wave EMAT, which can produce higher-purity A0 mode Lamb waves. Damage detection and localization based on ultrasonic guided waves revealed to be promising for structural health monitoring and nondestructive testing. However, the use of a piezoelectric sensor's network to locate and image damaged areas in composite structures requires a number of precautions including the consideration of anisotropy and baseline signals. The lack of information related to these two parameters drastically deteriorates the imaging performance of numerous signal processing methods. To avoid such deterioration, the present contribution proposes different methods to build baseline signals in different types of composites. Baseline signals are first constructed from a numerical simulation model using the previously determined elasticity tensor of the structure. Since the latter tensor is not always easy to obtain especially in the case of anisotropic materials, a second PZT network is used in order to obtain signals related to Lamb waves propagating in different directions. Waveforms are then translated according to a simplified theoretical propagation model of Lamb waves in homogeneous structures. The application of the different methods on transversely isotropic, unidirectional and quasi-transversely isotropic composites allows to have satisfactory images that well represent the damaged areas with the help of the delay-and-sum algorithm. Thin-walled structures, like aircraft skins and ship shells, are often several meters in size but only a few millimeters thick. By utilizing the laser ultrasonic Lamb wave detection method (LU-LDM), signals can be detected over long distances without physical contact. Additionally, this technology offers excellent flexibility in designing the measurement point distribution. The characteristics of LU-LDM are first analyzed in this review, specifically in terms of laser ultrasound and hardware configuration. Next, the methods are categorized based on three criteria: the quantity of collected wavefield data, the spectral domain, and the distribution of measurement points. The advantages and disadvantages of multiple methods are compared, and the suitable conditions for each method are summarized. Thirdly, we summarize four combined methods that balance detection efficiency and accuracy. Finally, several future development trends are suggested, and the current gaps and shortcomings in LU-LDM are highlighted. This review builds a comprehensive framework for LU-LDM for the first time, which is expected to serve as a technical reference for applying this technology in large, thin-walled structures. Acoustic emission (AE) testing and Lamb wave inspection techniques have been widely used in non-destructive testing and structural health monitoring. For thin plates, the AEs arising from structural defect development (e.g., fatigue crack propagation) propagate as Lamb waves, and Lamb wave modes can be used to provide important information about the growth and localisation of defects. However, few sensors can be used to achieve the in situ wavenumber–frequency modal decomposition of AEs. This study explores the ability of a new multi-element piezoelectric sensor array to decompose AEs excited by pencil lead breaks (PLBs) on a thin isotropic plate. In this study, AEs were generated by out-of-plane (transverse) and in-plane (longitudinal) PLBs applied at the edge of the plate, and waveforms were recorded by both the new sensor array and a commercial AE sensor. Finite element analysis (FEA) simulations of PLBs were also conducted and the results were compared with the experimental results. To identify the wave modes present, the longitudinal and transverse PLB test results recorded by the new sensor array at five different plate locations were compared with FEA simulations using the same arrangement. Two-dimensional fast Fourier Transforms were then applied to the AE wavefields. It was found that the AE modal composition was dependent on the orientation of the PLB direction. The results suggest that this new sensor array can be used to identify the AE wave modes excited by PLBs in both in-plane and out-of-plane directions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The RAPID (reconstruction algorithm for probabilistic inspection of defect) method based on Lamb wave detection is an effective method to give the position information of a defect in composite plate. In this paper, an improved RAPID imaging method based on machine learning (ML) is proposed to precisely visualize the location and features of defects in composite plate. First, the specific feature information of the defect, such as type, size and direction, can be identified by analyzing the detection signals through multiple machine learning models. Then, according to the obtained defect features, the scaling parameter β of the RAPID method which controls the size of the elliptical area is revised, and weights are set to the important detection paths which are related to defect features to realize precise defect imaging. The simulation results show that the proposed method can intuitively characterize the location and related feature information of the defect, and effectively improve the accuracy of defect imaging. Inspecting the sealing integrity of lead tabs is an important means of ensuring the reliability and safety of pouch-type lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries with a thin multi-layered aluminum (Al) laminated film. This paper presents a new air-coupled ultrasonic non-destructive testing (NDT) inspection method based on leaky Lamb wave transmission; and reception for evaluating the sealing integrity between the lead tab and the Al pouch film. The proposed method uses the critical incidence angle between the air and the layer with the fastest Lamb wave velocity to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio in the through-transmission mode. To determine the critical incidence angle, phantom experiments with two test pieces (i.e., an Al tab and an Al tab sealed with an Al pouch film) are conducted. In addition, 2D scans are performed at various incidence angles for an inhouse pouch-type Li-ion battery with a 1-mm-wide foreign material inserted as a defect. At the critical incidence angle (i.e., 22°), the proposed air-coupled ultrasonic NDT method in through-transmission mode successfully identifies the shape and location of the defect through c-scan image reconstruction. These preliminary results indicate that the proposed air-coupled ultrasonic NDT method with leaky Lamb waves can be used to inspect the sealing integrity of Li-ion pouch batteries in dry test conditions. Acoustic emission (AE) testing is a widely used nondestructive testing (NDT) method to investigate material failure. When environmental conditions are harmful for the operation of the sensors, waveguides are typically mounted in between the inspected structure and the sensor. Such waveguides can be built from different materials or have different designs in accordance with the experimental needs. All these variations can cause changes in the acoustic emission signals in terms of modal conversion, additional attenuation or shift in frequency content. A finite element method (FEM) was used to model acoustic emission signal propagation in an aluminum plate with an attached waveguide and was validated against experimental data. The geometry of the waveguide is systematically changed by varying the radius and height to investigate the influence on the detected signals. Different waveguide materials were implemented and change of material properties as function of temperature were taken into account. Development of the option of modeling different waveguide options replaces the time consuming and expensive trial and error alternative of experiments. This paper proposes a novel Lamb wave line sensing technique for crack detection in a welded stiffener. The proposed technique overcomes one of the biggest technical challenges of Lamb wave crack detection for real structure applications: crack-induced Lamb waves are often mixed with multiple reflections from complex waveguides. In particular, crack detection in a welded joint, one of the structural hot spots due to stress concentration, is accompanied by reflections from the welded joint as well as a crack. Extracting and highlighting crack-induced Lamb wave modes from Lamb wave responses measured at multi-spatial points along a single line can be accomplished through a frequency-wavenumber domain analysis. The advantages of the proposed technique enable us not only to enhance the crack detectability in the welded joint but also to minimize false alarms caused by environmental and operational variations by avoiding the direct comparison with the baseline data previously accumulated from the pristine condition of a target structure. The proposed technique is experimentally and numerically validated in vertically stiffened metallic structures, revealing that it successfully identifies and localizes subsurface cracks, regardless of the coexistence with the vertical stiffener. Nondestructive evaluation of carbon fiber reinforced material structures has received special attention in the last decades. Usage of Ultrasonic Guided Waves (UGW), particularly Lamb waves, has become one of the most popular techniques for damage location, due to their sensitivity to defects, large range of inspection, and good propagation in several material types. However, extracting meaningful physical features from the response signals is challenging due to several factors, such as the multimodal nature of UGW, boundary conditions and the geometric shape of the structure, possible material anisotropies, and their environmental dependency. Neural networks (NN) are becoming a practical and accurate approach to analyzing the acquired data using data-driven methods. In this paper, a Convolutional-Neural-Network (CNN) is proposed to predict the distance-to-damage values from the signals corresponding to a transmitter-receiver path of transducers. The NN input is a 2D image (time-frequency) obtained as the Wavelet transform of the acquired experimental signals. The distances obtained with the NN are the input of a novel damage location algorithm which outputs a bidimensional image of the structure's surface showing the estimated damage locations with a deviation of the actual position lower than 15 mm. Analytical modelling is an efficient approach to estimate the directivity of a transducer generating guided waves in the research field of ultrasonic non-destructive testing of the large and complex structures due to its short processing time as compared to the numerical modelling and experimental techniques. The wave patterns or the amplitude variations along the region of ultrasonic transducer itself depend on its behavior, excitation frequency, and the type of propagating wave mode. Depending on the wave-pattern of a propagating wave mode, the appropriate value of the amplitude correction factor must be multiplied to the amplitudes of the excitation signal for the accurate evaluation of directivity pattern of the ultrasonic transducers generating guided waves in analytical modelling. The objective of this work is to analyse the wave patterns under the region of macro-fiber composite (MFC) transducer to improve the accuracy of a previously developed analytical model for the prediction of directivity patterns. Firstly, the amplitude correction factor based on the wave patterns under the region of P1-type MFC (MFC-2814) transducer at two different frequencies (80 kHz, 3 periods and 220 kHz, 3 period) glued on 2 mm Al alloy plate has been estimated analytically in the case of an asymmetric (A0) guided Lamb wave. The validation of analytically estimated amplitude correction factor is performed by a proposed experimental method that allows analyzing the behaviour of MFC transducer under its region by gluing MFC on bottom surface and scanning the receiver on the top surface of the sample. Later on, the estimated amplitude correction factor is included in the previously developed 2D analytical model for the improvement in the directivity patterns of the A0 mode. The modified analytical model shows a significant improvement in the directivity pattern of the A0 wave mode in comparison to the results obtained by the previous model without considering the proper wave patterns. The results reveal that errors between the directivity estimated by the present modified 2D analytical model and experimental investigation are reduced by more than 58% in comparison to the previously developed analytical model. The main objectives of this study are to develop a non-destructive test method for evaluating delamination defects in concrete by the Impact-echo test using multi-channel elastic wave data and to verify the validity of the proposed method by experimental studies in the laboratory. First, prototype equipment using an eight-channel linear sensor array was developed to perform elastic wave measurements on the surface of the concrete. In this study, three concrete slab specimens (1500 mm (width) by 1500 mm (length) by 300 mm (thickness)), with simulated delamination defects of various lateral dimensions and depth, were designed and constructed in the laboratory. Multi-channel elastic wave signals measured on the three concrete specimens were converted to the frequency-phase velocity image by using the phase-shift method. A data processing method was proposed to extract the dominant propagating waves and non-propagating waves from the dispersion images. The dominant wave modes were used to evaluate delamination defects in concrete. It was demonstrated that the surface wave velocity values were useful for characterizing the shallow delamination defects in concrete. In addition, the peak frequency of non-propagating wave modes extracted from the dispersion images gives information on the lateral dimensions and depths of the delamination defects. This study also discussed the feasibility of combined use of the results from propagating and non-propagating wave modes to better understand the information on delamination defects in concrete. As will be discussed, the multi-channel elastic wave measurements enable more accurate, consistent, and rapid measurements and data processing for evaluation of delamination defects in concrete than the single-channel sensing method. Lamb waves have emerged as a valuable tool to examine long plate-like structures in a faster way compared to conventional bulk wave techniques, which make them attractive in non-destructive testing. However, they present a multimodal and dispersive nature, which hinders signal identification. Oblique incidence is one of the most known methods to generate and receive Lamb waves and it is applied in different experimental arrangements with different types of sensors. In this work, several setups were conducted and compared to determine the optimal ones to launch and detect ultrasonic Lamb waves, especially in non-homogeneous specimens. The chosen arrangements were contact with angle beam transducers, immersion in a water tank, localised water coupling using conical containers and air coupling. Plates of two different materials were used, stainless steel and Portland cement mortar. In this study, the transient multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) is proposed to detect the existence, the location and the length of interface debonding defects in rectangular concrete-filled steel tubes (CFST). Mesoscale numerical analysis is performed to validate the feasibility of MASW-based interfacial debonding detection. Research findings indicate that the coaxial characteristics in the Rayleigh wave disperse at the starting point of the debonding area and gradually restores at the end of the defect. For healthy specimens, the surface wave mode in CFST is closer to the Rayleigh wave. However, it can be treated as a Lamb wave since the steel plate is boundary-free on both sides in the debonding area. The displacement curves are further investigated with forward analysis to obtain the dispersion curves. The mesoscale numerical simulation results indicate that the propagation characteristic of the surface wave is dominated by the debonding defect. The detectability of interfacial debonding detection for rectangular CFST using the MASW approach is numerically verified in this study. The proposed MASW-based nondestructive testing technique can achieve bond-slip detection by comparing the variation trend of the coaxial characteristics in the time-history output signals and the dispersion curves obtained from the forward analysis, for avoiding misjudgment of the experimental observations.
