This paper investigates the performance of a wide variety of radar imaging modes, such as nadir-looking B-scan, or side-looking synthetic aperture radar tomographic acquisitions, performed in both back- and forward-scattering geometries, for the inspection and characterization of roadways. Nadir-looking B-scan corresponds to a low-complexity mode exploiting the direct return from the response, whereas side-looking configurations allow the utilization of angular and polarimetric diversity in order to analyze advanced features. The main objective of this paper is to evaluate the ability of each configuration, independently of aspects related to operational implementation, to discriminate and localize shallow underground defects in the wearing course of roadways, and to estimate key geophysical parameters, such as roughness and dielectric permittivity. Campaign measurements are conducted using short-range radar stepped-frequency continuous-waveform (SFCW) devices operated in the C and X bands, at the pavement fatigue carousel of Université Gustave Eiffel, over debonded areas with artificial defects. The results indicate the great potential of the newly proposed forward-scattering tomographic configuration for detecting slight defects and characterizing roadways. Case studies, performed in the presence of narrow horizontal heterogeneities which cannot be detected using classical B-scan, show that both the coherent integration along an aperture using the back-projection algorithm, and the exploitation of scattering mechanisms specific to the forward-looking bistatic geometry, allows anomalous echoes to be detected and further characterized, confirming the efficacy of radar imaging techniques in such applications. Drones are currently being used for various applications. However, the detection of drones for defense or security purposes has become problematic because of the use of plastic materials and the small size of these drones. Any drone can be placed under surveillance to accurately determine its position by collecting high-resolution data using various detectors such as the radar system proposed in this paper. The W-band radar has a high carrier frequency, which makes it easy to design a wide bandwidth system, and the wideband FMCW signal is suitable for creating high resolution images from a distance. Unfortunately, the huge amounts of data gathered in this way also contain clutter (such as background data and noise) that is usually generated from unstable radar systems and complex environmental factors, and which frequently gives rise to distorted data. Accurate extraction of the position of the target from this big data requires the clutter to be suppressed and canceled, but conventional clutter cancellation methods are not suitable. Four clutter cancellation algorithms are assessed and compared: standard deviation, adaptive least mean squares (LMS), recursive least squares (RLS), and the proposed LMS. The proposed LMS has combined LMS with the standard deviation method. First, the big data pertaining to the target position is collected using the W-band radar system. Subsequently, the target position is calculated by applying these algorithms. The cooperative imaging of the bistatic radar is an important research topic for missile-borne radar detection. The existing missile-borne radar detection system is mainly based on the target plot information separately extracted by each radar for data level fusion, without considering the gain brought by the cooperative processing of the radar target echo signal. In this paper, a random frequency-hopping waveform is designed for the bistatic radar to achieve efficient motion compensation. A coherent processing algorithm for bistatic echo signals is designed to achieve band fusion and improve the signal quality and range resolution of the radar. To address the dangerous driving behaviors prevalent among current car drivers, it is necessary to provide real-time, accurate warning and correction of driver's driving behaviors in a small, movable, and enclosed space. In this paper, we propose a method for detecting dangerous behaviors based on frequency-modulated continuous-wave radar (mm-DSF). The highly packaged millimeter-wave radar chip has good in-vehicle emotion recognition capability. The acquired millimeter-wave differential frequency signal is Fourier-transformed to obtain the intermediate frequency signal. The physiological decomposition of the local micro-Doppler feature spectrum of the target action is then used as the eigenvalue. Matrix signal intensity and clutter filtering are performed by analyzing the signal echo model of the input channel. The signal classification is based on the estimation and variety of the feature vectors of the target key actions using a modified and optimized level fusion method of the SlowFast dual-channel network. Nine typical risky driving behaviors were set up by the Dula Hazard Questionnaire and TEIQue-SF, and the accuracy of the classification results of the self-built dataset was analyzed to verify the high robustness of the method. Short-range millimeter wave radar sensors provide a reliable, continuous and non-contact solution for vital sign extraction. Off-The-Shelf (OTS) radars often have a directional antenna (beam) pattern. The transmitted wave has a conical main lobe, and power of the received target echoes deteriorate as we move away from the center point of the lobe. While measuring vital signs, the human subject is often located at the center of the antenna lobe. Since beamforming can increase signal quality at the side (azimuth) angles, this paper aims to provide an experimental comparison of vital sign extraction with and without beamforming. The experimental confirmation that beamforming can decrease the error in the vital sign extraction through radar has so far not been performed by researchers. A simple, yet effective receiver beamformer was designed and a concurrent measurement with and without beamforming was made for the comparative analysis. Measurements were made at three different distances and five different arrival angles, and the preliminary results suggest that as the observation angle increases, the effectiveness of beamforming increases. At an extreme angle of 40 degrees, the beamforming showed above 20% improvement in heart rate estimation. Heart rate measurement error was reduced significantly in comparison with the breathing rate. In radio-frequency (RF)-based device-free localization (DFL), the number of sensors acting as RF transmitters and receivers is crucial for accuracy and system costs. Two promising approaches for DFL have been identified in the past: radio tomographic imaging (RTI) and multi-static radar (MSR). RTI in its basic version requires many sensors for high accuracy, which increases the cost. In this paper, we show how RTI benefits from multipath propagation. By evaluating the direct and echo paths, we increase the coverage of the target area, and by utilizing UWB signals, the RTI system is less susceptible to multipath propagation. MSR maps reflections that occur within the target area to reflectors such as persons or other objects. MSR does not require that the person is located near a signal path. Both suggested methods exploit ultra-wideband (UWB) channel impulse response (CIR) measurements. CIR measurements and the modeling of multipath effects either increase the accuracy or reduce the required number of sensors for localization with RTI. We created a test setup and measure UWB CIRs at different positions with a commercially available off-the-shelf UWB radio chip, the Decawave DW1000. We compare the localization results of RTI, multipath-assisted (MA)-RTI, and MSR and investigate a combined approach. We show that RTI is improved by the analysis of multipath propagation; furthermore, MA-RTI results in a better performance compared to MSR: with 50% of all cases, the localization error is better than 0.82 m and in 80% of all cases 1.34 m. To construct circular barrier coverage (CBC) with multistatic radars, a deployment optimization method based on equipartition strategy is proposed in this paper. In the method, the whole circular area is divided into several sub-circles with equal width, and each sub-circle is blanketed by a sub-CBC that is built based on the multistatic radar deployment patterns. To determine the optimal deployment patterns for each sub-CBC, the optimization conditions are firstly studied. Then, to optimize the deployment of the whole circular area, a model based on minimum deployment cost is proposed, and the proposed model is divided into two sub-models to solve the optimization issue. In the inner model, it is assumed that the width of a sub-circle is given. Based on the optimization conditions of the deployment pattern, integer linear programming (ILP) and exhaustive method (EM) are jointly adopted to determine the types and numbers of deployment patterns. Moreover, a modified formula is introduced to calculate the maximum valid number of receivers in a pattern, thus narrowing the search scope of the EM. In the outer model, the width of a sub-circle is assumed to be a variable, and the EM is adopted to determine the minimum total deployment cost and the optimal deployment patterns on each sub-circle. Moreover, the improved formula is exploited to determine the range of width for a sub-circle barrier and reduce the search scope of the EM. Finally, simulations are conducted in different conditions to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. Continuous Wave (CW) radars systems, especially air-coupled Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR) or Through-Wall Imaging Radar (TWIR) systems, echo signals reflected from a stationary target with high energy, which may cause receiver saturation. Another effect caused by reflection of stationary targets is noticeable as background within a radargram. Nowadays, radar systems use automatic gain control to prevent receiver saturation. This paper proposes a method to remove stationary targets automatically from the received signal. The method was designed for a radar system with a moving platform, with an assumption that the distance between the surface and target is constant. The design is proposed of an SFCW radar with an integrated system for real-time multiple static target Echo Cancellation (EC). The proposed EC system removes the static target using active Integrated Circuit (IC) components, which generate the corresponding EC signal for each frequency step of the SFCW radar and sum it with the received echo signal. This has the main advantage of removing even multiple echoes at any distance, and excludes the need for a high-dynamic-range receiver. Additionally, the proposed system has minimal impact on the radar size and power consumption. Besides static target removal, the antenna coupling can be removed if the signal appears to be constant. The operating frequency was selected between 500 MHz and 2.5 GHz, due to the limitation of the used electronic components. The experimental results show that the simulated target's echo using a cable with a known length could be suppressed to up to 38 dB. Experimental results using a moving radar platform and the real environment scenario with static and dynamic targets, show that the proposed EC system could achieve up to 20 dB attenuation of the static target. The system does not affect any other target of interest, which can even move at any distance during the measurement. In this article, a new technique for determination of 2D signal source (target) position is proposed. This novel approach, called the Inscribed Angle (InA), is based on measuring the time difference of sequential irradiation by the main beam of the target antenna's radiation pattern, using Electronic Support Measures (ESM) receivers, assuming that the target antenna is rotating and that its angular velocity is constant. In addition, it is also assumed that the localization system operates in a LOS (Line of Sight) situation and that three time-synchronized sensors are placed arbitrarily across the area. The main contribution of the article is a complete description of the proposed localization method. That is, this paper demonstrates a geometric representation and an InA localization technique model. Analysis of the method's accuracy is also demonstrated. The time of irradiation of the receiving station corresponds to the direction in which the maximum received signal strength (RSS) was measured. In order to achieve a certain degree of accuracy of the proposed positioning technique, a method was derived to increase the accuracy of the irradiation time estimation. Noise Radar technology is the general term used to describe radar systems that employ realizations of a given stochastic process as transmit waveforms. Originally, carriers modulated in amplitude by a Gaussian random signal, derived from a hardware noise source, were taken into consideration, justifying the adopted nomenclature. With the advances made in hardware as well as the rise of the software defined noise radar concept, waveform design emerges as an important research area related to such systems. The possibility of generating signals with varied stochastic properties increased the potential in achieving systems with enhanced performances. The characterization of random phase and frequency modulated waveforms (more suitable for several applications) has then gained considerable notoriety within the radar community as well. Several optimization algorithms have been proposed in order to conveniently shape both the autocorrelation function of the random samples that comprise the transmit signal, as well as their power spectrum density. Nevertheless, little attention has been driven to properly characterize the stochastic properties of those signals through closed form expressions, jeopardizing the effectiveness of the aforementioned algorithms as well as their reproducibility. Foreign object debris (FOD) on airport runways can cause serious accidents and huge economic losses. FOD detection systems based on millimeter-wave (MMW) radar sensors have the advantages of higher range resolution and lower power consumption. However, it is difficult for traditional FOD detection methods to detect and distinguish weak signals of targets from strong ground clutter. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a new FOD detection approach based on optimized variational mode decomposition (VMD) and support vector data description (SVDD). This approach utilizes SVDD as a classifier to distinguish FOD signals from clutter signals. More importantly, the VMD optimized by whale optimization algorithm (WOA) is used to improve the accuracy and stability of the classifier. Simple Summary: This paper presents a hierarchical approach to place recognition and pose refinement for Frequency-Modulated Continuous-Wave (FMCW) scanning radar localisation. This paper presents a novel two-stage system which integrates topological localisation candidates from a radar-only place recognition system with precise pose estimation using spectral landmark-based techniques. We prove that the—recently available—seminal radar place recognition (RPR) and scan matching sub-systems are complementary in a style reminiscent of the mapping and localisation systems underpinning visual teach-and-repeat (VTR) systems which have been exhibited robustly in the last decade. Offline experiments are conducted on the most extensive radar-focused urban autonomy dataset available to the community with performance comparing favourably with and even rivalling alternative state-of-the-art radar localisation systems. Specifically, we show the long-term durability of the approach and of the sensing technology itself to autonomous navigation. We suggest a range of sensible methods of tuning the system, all of which are suitable for online operation. For both tuning regimes, we achieve, over the course of a month of localisation trials against a single static map, high recalls at high precision, and much reduced variance in erroneous metric pose estimation. As such, this work is a necessary first step towards a radar teach-and-repeat (RTR) system and the enablement of autonomy across extreme changes in appearance or inclement conditions. This paper presents the application of the time-frequency (TF) reassignment technique in passive forward scattering radar (FSR) using Digital Video Broadcasting – Terrestrial (DVB-T) transmitters of opportunity operating in the Very High Frequency (VHF) band. The validation of the proposed technique was done using real-life signals collected by the passive radar demonstrator during a measurement campaign. The scenario was chosen to test detection ranges and the capability of estimating the kinematic parameters of a cooperative airborne target in passive FSR geometry. Additionally, in the experiment the possibility of utilizing FSR geometry in foliage penetration conditions taking advantage of the VHF band of a DVB-T illuminator of opportunity was tested. The results presented in this paper show that the concentrated (reassigned) energy distribution of the signal in the TF domain allows a more precise target Doppler rate to be estimated using the Hough transform. Height detection of a low elevation angle target is crucial in radar applications. Due to the presence of the multiple path reflections, elevation angle estimation is difficult with conventional narrowband radar waveforms. The reflection ground area parameters are especially hard to obtain for modeling. In this paper, we proposed a wideband, low elevation angle estimator based on range super-resolution, achieving a high robustness to variations in reflection coefficients. A relaxation (RELAX) algorithm was applied as the range super-resolution algorithm to separate the direct target echo and the reflected signal thanks to the relatively abundant frequency diversity. The grazing angle was obtained by synthesizing the steering vector of the direct signal and the range structure relationship between the two signal components. Foreign object debris (FOD) detection can be considered a kind of classification that distinguishes the measured signal as either containing FOD targets or only corresponding to ground clutter. In this paper, we propose a support vector domain description (SVDD) classifier with the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm for FOD detection. The echo features of FOD and ground clutter received by the millimeter-wave radar are first extracted in the power spectrum domain as input eigenvectors of the classifier, followed with the parameters optimized by the PSO algorithm, and lastly, a PSO-SVDD classifier is established. However, since only ground clutter samples are utilized to train the SVDD classifier, overfitting inevitably occurs. Thus, a small number of samples with FOD are added in the training stage to further construct a PSO-NSVDD (NSVDD: SVDD with negative examples) classifier to achieve better classification performance. Experimental results based on measured data showed that the proposed methods could not only achieve a good detection performance but also significantly reduce the false alarm rate. In this paper, a joint diagonalization based two dimensional (2D) direction of departure (DOD) and 2D direction of arrival (DOA) estimation method for a mixture of circular and strictly noncircular (NC) sources is proposed based on an L-shaped bistatic multiple input multiple output (MIMO) radar. By making full use of the L-shaped MIMO array structure to obtain an extended virtual array at the receive array, we first combine the received data vector and its conjugated counterpart to construct a new data vector, and then an estimating signal parameter via rotational invariance techniques (ESPRIT)-like method is adopted to estimate the DODs and DOAs by joint diagonalization of the NC-based direction matrices, which can automatically pair the four dimensional (4D) angle parameters and solve the angle ambiguity problem with common one-dimensional (1D) DODs and DOAs. In addition, the asymptotic performance of the proposed algorithm is analyzed and the closed-form stochastic Cramer–Rao bound (CRB) expression is derived. Earth-based radar astronomical observations provide information on surface characteristics, orbits, and rotations for a wide variety of solar system objects. Based on compound radio telescopes, both the Chinese VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry) network (CVN) and the Russian VLBI network (Quasar), in cooperation with the Chinese radar transmitters, we present the current ground radar astronomical observations of the moon. The spectrum of the reflected radio signals was obtained and the Doppler frequency shift in bi-static radar mode was measured. Radar albedo of the observed region and power ratios of the reflected signals with left- and right-hand circular polarizations were determined, allowing us to study the radar reflectivity and near-surface wavelength-scale roughness of the moon. Traditional constant false alarm rate (CFAR) methods have shown their potential for foreign object debris (FOD) indication. However, the performance of these methods would deteriorate under the complex clutter background in airport scenes. This paper presents a threshold-improved approach based on the cell-averaging clutter-map (CA-CM-) CFAR and tests it on a millimeter-wave (MMW) radar system. Clutter cases are first classified with variability indexes (VIs). In homogeneous background, the threshold is calculated by the student-t-distributed test statistic; under the discontinuous clutter conditions, the threshold is modified according to current VI conditions, in order to address the performance decrease caused by extended clutter edges. Experimental results verify that the chosen targets can be indicated by the t-distributed threshold in homogeneous background. Continuous respiration monitoring is important for predicting a potential disease. Due to respiration measurements using contact sensors, it is difficult to achieve continuous measurement because the sensors are inconvenient to attach. In this study, a radar sensor was used for non-contact respiration measurements. The radar sensor had a high precision and could even be used in the dark. It could also be used continuously regardless of time and place. The radar sensor relied on the periodicity of respiration to detect the respiration rate. A respiration adaptive interval was set and the respiration rate was detected through harmonic quefrency selection. As a result, it was confirmed that there was no difference between the respiratory rate measured using a respiration belt and the respiratory rate detected using a radar sensor. Furthermore, case studies on changes in the radar position and about measurement for long periods confirmed that the radar sensor could detect respiration rate continuously regardless of the position and measurement duration. Timely calls for help can really make a difference for elders who suffer from falls, particularly in private locations. Considering privacy protection and convenience for the users, in this paper, we approach the problem by using impulse–radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) monostatic radar and propose a learning model that combines convolutional layers and convolutional long short term memory (ConvLSTM) to extract robust spatiotemporal features for fall detection. The performance of the proposed scheme was evaluated in terms of accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity. The results show that the proposed method outperforms convolutional neural network (CNN)-based methods. Of the six activities we investigated, the proposed method can achieve a sensitivity of 95% and a specificity of 92.6% at a range of 8 meters. Further tests in a heavily furnished lounge environment showed that the model can detect falls with more than 90% sensitivity, even without re-training effort. The proposed method can detect falls without exposing the identity of the users. Thus, the proposed method is ideal for room-level fall detection in privacy-prioritized scenarios. A modified signal processing and target fusion detection method based on the dual platform cooperative detection model is proposed in this paper. In this model, a single transmitter and dual receiver radar system is adopted, which can form a single radar and bistatic radar system, respectively. Clutter suppression is achieved by an adaptive moving target indicator (AMTI). By combining the AMTI technology and the traditional radar signal processing technology (i.e., pulse compression and coherent accumulation processing), the SNR is improved, and false targets generated by direct wave are suppressed. The decision matrix is obtained by cell averaging constant false alarm (CA-CFAR) and order statistics constant false alarm (OS-CFAR) processing. Then, the echo signals processed in the two receivers are fused by the AND-like fusion rule and OR-like fusion rule, and the detection probability after fusion detection in different cases is analyzed. Finally, the performance of the proposed method is quantitatively analyzed. Experimental results based on simulated data demonstrate that: (1) The bistatic radar system with a split transceiver has a larger detection distance than the single radar system, but the influence of clutter is greater; (2) the direct wave can be eliminated effectively, and no false target can be formed after suppression; (3) the detection probability of the bistatic radar system with split transceivers is higher than that of the single radar system; and (4) the detection probability of signal fusion detection based on two receivers is higher than that of the bistatic radar system and single radar system. This paper presents a novel approach to fast and accurate non-linear pulse signal reconstruction dedicated for electromagnetic sensors and their applications such as ELectronic INTelligence (ELINT), electronic warfare (EW), electronic reconnaissance (ER) systems, as well as for passive bistatic radar purposes in which other pulse radars are used as a source of illumination. The method is based on the instantaneous chirp rate (CR) estimation in the time-frequency (TF) domain providing a calculation of the frequency rate between every two consecutive samples. Such a new method allows for the precise reconstruction of the non-linear frequency modulated (NLFM) signal to be carried out in significantly shorter time in comparison to methods known in the literature. The presented approach was tested and validated using both simulated and real-life radar signals proving the usability of the proposed solution in practical applications. The increase in drone misuse by civilian apart from military applications is alarming and need to be addressed. This drone is characterized as a low altitude, slow speed, and small radar cross-section (RCS) (LSS) target and is considered difficult to be detected and classified among other biological targets, such as insects and birds existing in the same surveillance volume. Although several attempts reported the successful drone detection on radio frequency-based (RF), thermal, acoustic, video imaging, and other non-technical methods, however, there are also many limitations. Thus, this paper investigated a micro-Doppler analysis from drone rotating blades for detection in a special Forward Scattering Radar (FSR) geometry. The paper leveraged the identified benefits of FSR mode over conventional radars, such as improved radar cross-section (RCS) value irrespective of radar absorbing material (RAM), direct signal perturbation, and high resolutions. To prove the concept, a received signal model for micro-Doppler analysis, a simulation work, and experimental validation are elaborated and explained in the paper. Two rotating blades aspect angle scenarios were considered, which are (i) when drone makes a turn, the blade cross-sectional area faces the receiver and (ii) when drone maneuvers normally, the cross-sectional blade faces up. The FSR system successfully detected a commercial drone and extracted the micro features of a rotating blade. It further verified the feasibility of using a parabolic dish antenna as a receiver in FSR geometry; this marked an appreciable achievement towards the FSR system performance, which in future could be implemented as either active or passive FSR system. Vital parameters are key indicators for the assessment of health. Conventional methods rely on direct contact with the patients' skin and can hence cause discomfort and reduce autonomy. This article presents a bistatic 24 GHz radar system based on an interferometric six-port architecture and features a precision of 1 µm in distance measurements. Placed at a distance of 40 cm in front of the human chest, it detects vibrations containing respiratory movements, pulse waves and heart sounds. For the extraction of the respiration rate, time-domain approaches like autocorrelation, peaksearch and zero crossing rate are compared to the Fourier transform, while template matching and a hidden semi-Markov model are utilized for the detection of the heart rate from sphygmograms and heart sounds. A medical study with 30 healthy volunteers was conducted to collect 5.5 h of data, where impedance cardiogram and electrocardiogram were used as gold standard for synchronously recording respiration and heart rate, respectively. A low root mean square error for the breathing rate (0.828 BrPM) and a high overall F1 score for heartbeat detection (93.14%) could be achieved using the proposed radar system and signal processing.
