To study the acoustic characteristics of sound scattered from laminated structures such as elastic plates and shells, it is usually required to solve the Lamb waves' dispersion equations. Many traditional root-finding methods such as bisection, the Newton–Raphson method, and the Muller method are not able to tackle the problem completely. A simple but powerful method named local peaks search (LPS) is proposed to overcome their drawbacks. Firstly, the non-zero part of the dispersion equation is defined as the dispersion function, and its reciprocal is used to transform the zeros (i.e., roots) into local peaks. Secondly, the chosen complex domain is discretized, and the coarse local domains where the local peaks exist are determined by the direct search method globally. Thirdly, the Muller method is applied to obtain the refined locations of local peaks. Lastly, in order to refine the results, a hierarchical scheme is designed and the iteration of the above procedures is implemented; the error is set to be 10−16 as the stop criteria. The accuracy of the LPS method is validated by comparing it with the bisection method for the problem of elastic plates in the vacuum. The acoustic echo structures are analyzed experimentally. By computation of Lamb waves' phase velocity, the critical angles are derived numerically and compared with the results acquired by an experiment using monostatic sound transducers. In this way, it is validated that the elastic scattered wave components are the highlights shown in the time-angle figure. Periodic permanent magnet(PPM) electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs) are commonly employed for axial defect inspection in pipelines. However, the lowest-order shear horizontal waves (SH0) guided waves have difficulties in distinctly differentiating internal and external defects. To enhance the signal-to-noise ratio and resolution, a unidirectional electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) based on Circumferential Lamb waves (CLamb waves) is developed. Through structural parameter optimization and excitation frequency adjustment, high-amplitude and low-dispersion CLamb waves are successfully generated in the high-frequency-thickness product region of the dispersion curve. Finite element simulations and experimental validation confirm the capability of this EMAT in exciting CLamb waves for the detection of crack-like defects. Experimental results demonstrate that the excitation efficiency of the CLamb EMAT exceeds that of the periodic permanent magnet electromagnetic acoustic transducer by more than tenfold. The defect reflection signal of the CLamb EMAT exhibits higher resolution and more significant amplitude compared to the PPM EMAT. The integration of this method with SH0 mode detection allows for the inspection of both internal and external defects in pipelines, offering a new avenue for EMAT applications in pipeline inspection. Due to its multi-mode and dispersion characteristics, Lamb waves cause interference to signal processing, which profoundly limits their application in nondestructive testing. To resolve this issue, firstly, based on the traditional EMAT, a horizontal polarization periodic permanent magnet electromagnetic acoustic transducer (HP-PPM-EMAT) was proposed. A 2-D finite element model was then developed to compare magnetic flux density, Lorentz force, and signal strength between the traditional EMAT and the HP-PPM-EMAT. The simulation results show that the HP-PPM-EMAT enhances the A0 mode Lamb wave (A0 wave) and suppresses the S0 mode Lamb wave (S0 wave). Finally, the influence of structural parameters of the HP-PPM-EMAT on the total displacement amplitude ratio of A0 and S0 was investigated using orthogonal test theory, and the width of magnet units was improved based on the orthogonal test. The results show that the total displacement amplitude ratio of A0 to S0 of the improved HP-PPM-EMAT can be improved by a factor of 7.74 compared with that of the traditional Lamb wave EMAT, which can produce higher-purity A0 mode Lamb waves. In view of the shortage of structural defect monitoring methods for deep submersibles, numerical simulation and experimental research on underwater SAW propagation based on interdigital transducers are carried out in this paper. PVDF interdigital transducer (PVDF-IDT) has shown considerable potential in the application of structural health monitoring because of its micro size, soft material characteristics, and the characteristics of long-term bonding on the surface of the tested structure. In order to realize the application of IDT on submersible or underwater structures, it is necessary to understand the influence of underwater environment on IDTs with different structures. The underwater attenuation of IDT with 2–5 mm wavelength and the underwater attenuation of Lamb (A0 mode) wave on a 4 mm thick titanium alloy plate is obtained through COMSOL software simulation. The experimental verification shows that the simulation results match with the actual situation, which proves that COMSOL software can accurately calculate the acoustic attenuation of surface waves at the solid–liquid interface. At the same time, the underwater attenuation of IDT with different structures is very different, providing important design parameters for the underwater interdigital transducer. This article proposes an electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) for selectively improving the purity and amplitude of ultrasonic Lamb waves in non-ferromagnetic plates. The developed EMAT consists of a racetrack coil and a group of periodic permanent magnets (PPMs). Two-dimensional finite element simulations and experiments are implemented to analyze the working mechanism and performance of the PPM EMAT. Thanks to the specific design, the eddy currents increase with increasing wire density and the directions of the magnetic fields and Lorentz forces alternate according to the polarities of the magnet units. Wires laid uniformly beneath the magnets, and the gaps between adjacent magnets generate tangential and normal Lorentz forces, resulting in-plane (IP) and out-of-plane (OP) displacements, respectively. The constructive interference occurs when the wavelength of the generated Lamb wave is twice the spacing of the magnets, leading to large amplitudes of the targeted ultrasonic Lamb waves. Therefore, the PPM EMAT is capable of generating pure symmetric or antisymmetric mode Lamb waves at respective frequencies. The results prove that the developed PPM EMAT can generate pure either S0 or A0 mode Lamb waves at respective frequencies. The increase in wire width and wire density further increases the signal amplitudes. Compared with the case of conventional meander-line-coil (MLC) EMAT, the amplitudes of the A0 and S0 mode Lamb waves of our PPM EMAT are increased to 880% and 328%, respectively. The development of MEMS acoustic resonators meets the increasing demand for in situ detection with a higher performance and smaller size. In this paper, a lithium niobate film-based S1 mode Lamb wave resonator (HF-LWR) for high-sensitivity gravimetric biosensing is proposed. The fabricated resonators, based on a 400-nm X-cut lithium niobate film, showed a resonance frequency over 8 GHz. Moreover, a PMMA layer was used as the mass-sensing layer, to study the performance of the biosensors based on HF-LWRs. Through optimizing the thickness of the lithium niobate film and the electrode configuration, the mass sensitivity of the biosensor could reach up to 74,000 Hz/(ng/cm2), and the maximum value of figure of merit (FOM) was 5.52 × 107, which shows great potential for pushing the performance boundaries of gravimetric-sensitive acoustic biosensors. To make clear the mode conversion behavior of S0-mode lamb wave and SH0-plate wave converting to the longitudinal mode guided wave and torsional mode guided wave in a pipe, respectively, the experiments were performed based on a previous built pipe inspection system. The pipe was wound with an L-shaped plate or a T-shaped plate as the waveguide, and the S0-wave and SH0-wave were excited separately in the waveguide. To carry out the objective, a meander-line coil electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) for S0-wave and a periodic permanent magnet (PPM) EMAT for SH0-wave were developed and optimized. Then, several comparison experiments were conducted to compare the efficiency of mode conversion. Experimental results showed that the T(0,1) mode, L(0,1) mode, and L(0,2) mode guided waves can be successfully detected when converted from the S0-wave or SH0-wave with different shaped waveguides. It can also be inferred that the S0-wave has a better ability to convert to the T(0,1) mode, while the SH0-wave is easier to convert to the L(0,1) mode and L(0,2) mode, and the L-shaped waveguide has a better efficiency than T-shaped waveguide. This paper proposes a new omni-directional electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) for the ultrasonic Lamb wave (ULW) tomography imaging (TI) of defects in metallic plates. The proposed EMAT is composed of a permanent magnet and a coil with a contra-flexure structure. This new EMAT coil structure is used for omni-directional ULW transmission and reception and ULW TI for the first time. The theoretical background and the working principles of this EMAT are presented and analyzed. The experimental results of its use on a 3 mm thick aluminum plate indicate that the EMAT with a contra-flexure coil (CFC) can transmit and receive a pure single A0 mode ULW with a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Thus, the extraction of the projection data used for ULW TI may be performed accurately. The circumferential consistency of the projection data is only slightly influenced by the distortion of the eddy current field that is induced by the new CFC with an irregular shape. When the new EMAT array is used for ULW TI using the cross-hole method and SIRT arithmetic, a desirable imaging quality can be achieved, and the estimated size of an artificial corrosion defect agreed well with its actual value . The relation between the reconstruction resolution and the number of the new EMATs used is analyzed. More TI experiments are carried out when the aluminum plate defect is in two different locations relative to the EMAT array, for the further investigation of the performances of the new EMATs. Recently, an acoustic waveguide sensor based on multiple mode conversion of surface acoustic waves at the solid-liquid interfaces has been introduced for the concentration measurement of binary and ternary mixtures, liquid level sensing, investigation of spatial inhomogenities or bubble detection. In this contribution the sound wave propagation within this acoustic waveguide sensor is visualized by Schlieren imaging for continuous and burst operation the first time. In the acoustic waveguide the antisymmetrical zero order Lamb wave mode is excited by a single phase transducer of 1 MHz on thin glass plates of 1 mm thickness. By contact to the investigated liquid Lamb waves propagating on the first plate emit pressure waves into the adjacent liquid, which excites Lamb waves on the second plate, what again causes pressure waves traveling inside the liquid back to the first plate and so on. The Schlieren images prove this multi reflection within the acoustic waveguide, which confirms former considerations and calculations based on the receiver signal. In the paper, the results of production of Ag inkjet printed interdigital transducers to the acoustic delay line based on Y-cut X-propagation direction of lithium niobate plate for the frequency range from 1 to 14 MHz are presented. Additionally, morphological, structural, and electro-physical characteristics of the obtained electrodes were investigated. Mathematical modeling of the excitation of acoustic waves by these electrode structures was carried out. Comparison of the theoretical results with experimental ones showed their qualitative and quantitative coincidences. It was shown that conventional inkjet printing can replace the complex photolithographic method for production of interdigital transducers for acoustic delay lines working up to 14 MHz. The resulting electrode structures make it possible to efficiently excite acoustic waves with a high value of electromechanical coupling coefficient in piezoelectric plates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ultrasonic testing is an important means to detect defacing defects, such as scratches and cracks, but when the size of these defects is smaller than the wavelength of ultrasonic waves, it is difficult to detect them using traditional methods like the pulse-echo method and broadband ultrasound attenuation method for the diffraction of ultrasonic waves at the defects. Based on the non-contact characteristic of electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs), a transducer for scanning inspection was developed in this paper. The transducer was utilized to detect and measure the depth of the defacing defects on an aluminium plate based on the near-field enhancement of ultrasonic Lamb waves. The results show that the amplitude of the S0 Lamb wave experiences a large enhancement when the transducer is passed over the scratch defects and the enhancement has a clearly positive correlation with the depth of the scratch defects. When the depth increases from 0.1 mm to 0.9 mm, the amplitude of S0 Lamb waves increases from 1.13 times to 2.27 times the S0 Lamb waves received on the aluminium plate without defects. The new method can be utilized to detect the defacing defects on the aluminium plate and get better detection effects than the traditional methods without analyzing the relatively small reflection waves.
