Industry 4 (I4) was a revolutionary new stage for technological progress in manufacturing which promised a new level of interconnectedness between a diverse range of technologies. Sensors, as a point technology, play an important role in these developments, facilitating human–machine interaction and enabling data collection for system-level technologies. Concerns for human labour working in I4 environments (e.g., health and safety, data generation and extraction) are acknowledged by Industry 5 (I5), an update of I4 which promises greater attention to human–machine relations through a values-driven approach to collaboration and co-design. This article explores how engineering experts integrate values promoted by policy-makers into both their thinking about the human in their work and in their writing. This paper demonstrates a novel interdisciplinary approach in which an awareness of different disciplinary epistemic values associated with humans and work guides a systematic literature review and interpretive coding of practice-focussed engineering papers. Findings demonstrate evidence of an I5 human-centric approach: a high value for employees as "end-users" of innovative systems in manufacturing; and an increase in output addressing human activity in modelling and the technologies available to address this concern. Anomaly detection systems based on artificial intelligence (AI) have demonstrated high performance and efficiency in a wide range of applications such as power plants and smart factories. However, due to the inherent reliance of AI systems on the quality of training data, they still demonstrate poor performance in certain environments. Especially in hazardous facilities with constrained data collection, deploying these systems remains a challenge. In this paper, we propose Generative Anomaly Detection using Prototypical Networks (GAD-PN) designed to detect anomalies using only a limited number of normal samples. GAD-PN is a structure that integrates CycleGAN with Prototypical Networks (PNs), learning from metadata similar to the target environment. This approach enables the collection of data that are difficult to gather in real-world environments by using simulation or demonstration models, thus providing opportunities to learn a variety of environmental parameters under ideal and normal conditions. During the inference phase, PNs can classify normal and leak samples using only a small number of normal data from the target environment by prototypes that represent normal and abnormal features. We also complement the challenge of collecting anomaly data by generating anomaly data from normal data using CycleGAN trained on anomaly features. It can also be adapted to various environments that have similar anomalous scenarios, regardless of differences in environmental parameters. To validate the proposed structure, data were collected specifically targeting pipe leakage scenarios, which are significant problems in environments such as power plants. In addition, acoustic ultrasound signals were collected from the pipe nozzles in three different environments. As a result, the proposed model achieved a leak detection accuracy of over 90% in all environments, even with only a small number of normal data. Real-time traffic signal acquisition and network transmission are essential components of intelligent transportation systems, facilitating real-time traffic monitoring, management, and analysis in urban environments. In this paper, we introduce a comprehensive system that incorporates live traffic signal acquisition, real-time data processing, and secure network transmission through a combination of hardware and software modules, called LIDATS. LIDATS stands for Live Intersection Data Acquisition for Traffic Simulators. The design and implementation of our system are detailed, encompassing signal acquisition hardware as well as a software platform that is used specifically for real-time data processing. The performance evaluation of our system was conducted by simulation in the lab, demonstrating its capability to reliably capture and transmit data in real time, and to effectively extract the relevant information from noisy and complex traffic data. Supporting a variety of intelligent transportation applications, such as real-time traffic flow management, intelligent traffic signal control, and predictive traffic analysis, our system enables remote data analysis and decisionmaking, providing valuable insights and enhancing the traffic efficiency while reducing the congestion in urban environments. With the increasing number of households owning pets, the importance of sensor data for recognizing pet behavior has grown significantly. However, challenges arise due to the costs and reliability issues associated with data collection. This paper proposes a method for classifying pet behavior using cleaned meta pseudo labels to overcome these issues. The data for this study were collected using wearable devices equipped with accelerometers, gyroscopes, and magnetometers, and pet behaviors were classified into five categories. Utilizing this data, we analyzed the impact of the quantity of labeled data on accuracy and further enhanced the learning process by integrating an additional Distance Loss. This method effectively improves the learning process by removing noise from unlabeled data. Experimental results demonstrated that while the conventional supervised learning method achieved an accuracy of 82.9%, the existing meta pseudo labels method showed an accuracy of 86.2%, and the cleaned meta pseudo labels method proposed in this study surpassed these with an accuracy of 88.3%. These results hold significant implications for the development of pet monitoring systems, and the approach of this paper provides an effective solution for recognizing and classifying pet behavior in environments with insufficient labels. The revolution of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the Web of Things (WoT) has brought new opportunities and challenges for the information retrieval (IR) field. The exponential number of interconnected physical objects and real-time data acquisition requires new approaches and architectures for IR systems. Research and prototypes can be crucial in designing and developing new systems and refining architectures for IR in the WoT. This paper proposes a unified and holistic approach for IR in the WoT, called IR.WoT. The proposed system contemplates the critical indexing, scoring, and presentation stages applied to some smart cities' use cases and scenarios. Overall, this paper describes the research, architecture, and vision for advancing the field of IR in the WoT and addresses some of the remaining challenges and opportunities in this exciting area. The article also describes the design considerations, cloud implementation, and experimentation based on a simulated collection of synthetic XML documents with technical efficiency measures. The experimentation results show promising outcomes, whereas further studies are required to improve IR.WoT effectiveness, considering the WoT dynamic characteristics and, more importantly, the heterogeneity and divergence of WoT modeling proposals in the IR domain. This paper focuses on mission planning and cooperative navigation algorithms for multi-drone systems aimed at LiDAR-based mapping. It aims at demonstrating how multi-UAV cooperation can be used to fulfill LiDAR data georeferencing accuracy requirements, as well as to improve data collection capabilities, e.g., increasing coverage per unit time and point cloud density. These goals are achieved by exploiting the CDGNSS/Vision paradigm and properly defining the formation geometry and the UAV trajectories. The paper provides analytical tools to estimate point density considering different types of scanning LIDAR and to define attitude/pointing requirements. These tools are then used to support centralized cooperation-aware mission planning aimed at complete coverage for different target geometries. The validity of the proposed framework is demonstrated through numerical simulations considering a formation of three vehicles tasked with a powerline inspection mission. The results show that cooperative navigation allows for the reduction of angular and positioning estimation uncertainties, which results in a georeferencing error reduction of an order of magnitude and equal to 16.7 cm in the considered case. Due to the advantages of ease of use, less motion disturbance, and low cost, wearable systems have been widely used in the human–machine interaction (HRI) field. However, HRI in complex clinical rehabilitation scenarios has further requirements for wearable sensor systems, which has aroused the interest of many researchers. However, the traditional wearable system has problems such as low integration, limited types of measurement data, and low accuracy, causing a gap with the actual needs of HRI. This paper will introduce the latest progress in the current wearable systems of HRI from four aspects. First of all, it introduces the breakthroughs of current research in system integration, which includes processing chips and flexible sensing modules to reduce the system's volume and increase battery life. After that, this paper reviews the latest progress of wearable systems in electrochemical measurement, which can extract single or multiple biomarkers from biological fluids such as sweat. In addition, the clinical application of non-invasive wearable systems is introduced, which solves the pain and discomfort problems caused by traditional clinical invasive measurement equipment. Finally, progress in the combination of current wearable systems and the latest machine-learning methods is shown, where higher accuracy and indirect acquisition of data that cannot be directly measured is achieved. From the evidence presented, we believe that the development trend of wearable systems in HRI is heading towards high integration, multi-electrochemical measurement data, and clinical and intelligent development. Additive manufacturing (AM) has emerged as a transformative technology for various industries, enabling the production of complex and customized parts. However, ensuring the quality and reliability of AM parts remains a critical challenge. Thus, image-based fault monitoring has gained significant attention as an efficient approach for detecting and classifying faults in AM processes. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of image-based fault monitoring in AM, focusing on recent developments and future directions. Specifically, the proponents garnered relevant papers from 2019 to 2023, gathering a total of 53 papers. This paper discusses the essential techniques, methodologies, and algorithms employed in image-based fault monitoring. Furthermore, recent developments are explored such as the use of novel image acquisition techniques, algorithms, and methods. In this paper, insights into future directions are provided, such as the need for more robust image processing algorithms, efficient data acquisition and analysis methods, standardized benchmarks and datasets, and more research in fault monitoring. By addressing these challenges and pursuing future directions, image-based fault monitoring in AM can be enhanced, improving quality control, process optimization, and overall manufacturing reliability. Heavy machinery allows for the efficient, precise, and safe management of large-scale operations that are beyond the abilities of humans. Heavy machinery breakdowns or failures lead to unexpected downtime, increasing maintenance costs, project delays, and leading to a negative impact on personnel safety. Predictive maintenance is a maintenance strategy that predicts possible breakdowns of equipment using data analysis, pattern recognition, and machine learning. In this paper, vibration-based condition monitoring studies are reviewed with a focus on the devices and methods used for data collection. For measuring vibrations, different accelerometers and their technologies were investigated and evaluated within data collection contexts. The studies collected information from a wide range of sources in the heavy machinery. Throughout our review, we came across some studies using simulations or existing datasets. Induction machines (IMs) are commonly used in various industrial sectors. It is essential to recognize IM defects at their earliest stage so as to prevent machine performance degradation and improve production quality and safety. This work will focus on IM broken rotor bar (BRB) fault detection, as BRB fault could generate extra heating, vibration, acoustic noise, or even sparks in IMs. In this paper, a modified empirical mode decomposition (EMD) technique, or MEMD, is proposed for BRB fault detection using motor current signature analysis. A smart sensor-based data acquisition (DAQ) system is developed by our research team and is used to collect current signals wirelessly. The MEMD takes several processing steps. Firstly, correlation-based EMD analysis is undertaken to select the most representative intrinsic mode function (IMF). Secondly, an adaptive window function is suggested for spectral operation and analysis to detect the BRB fault. Thirdly, a new reference function is proposed to generate the fault index for fault severity diagnosis analytically. The effectiveness of the proposed MEMD technique is verified experimentally. This paper presents an energy-efficient and high-accuracy sampling synchronization approach for real-time synchronous data acquisition in wireless sensor networks (saWSNs). A proprietary protocol based on time-division multiple access (TDMA) and deep energy-efficient coding in sensor firmware is proposed. A real saWSN model based on 2.4 GHz nRF52832 system-on-chip (SoC) sensors was designed and experimentally tested. The obtained results confirmed significant improvements in data synchronization accuracy (even by several times) and power consumption (even by a hundred times) compared to other recently reported studies. The results demonstrated a sampling synchronization accuracy of 0.8 μs and ultra-low power consumption of 15 μW per 1 kb/s throughput for data. The protocol was well designed, stable, and importantly, lightweight. The complexity and computational performance of the proposed scheme were small. The CPU load for the proposed solution was <2% for a sampling event handler below 200 Hz. Furthermore, the transmission reliability was high with a packet error rate (PER) not exceeding 0.18% for TXPWR ≥ −4 dBm and 0.03% for TXPWR ≥ 3 dBm. The efficiency of the proposed protocol was compared with other solutions presented in the manuscript. Compressive sensing (CS) is recognized for its adeptness at compressing signals, making it a pivotal technology in the context of sensor data acquisition. With the proliferation of image data in Internet of Things (IoT) systems, CS is expected to reduce the transmission cost of signals captured by various sensor devices. However, the quality of CS-reconstructed signals inevitably degrades as the sampling rate decreases, which poses a challenge in terms of the inference accuracy in downstream computer vision (CV) tasks. This limitation imposes an obstacle to the real-world application of existing CS techniques, especially for reducing transmission costs in sensor-rich environments. In response to this challenge, this paper contributes a CV-oriented adaptive CS framework based on saliency detection to the field of sensing technology that enables sensor systems to intelligently prioritize and transmit the most relevant data. Unlike existing CS techniques, the proposal prioritizes the accuracy of reconstructed images for CV purposes, not only for visual quality. The primary objective of this proposal is to enhance the preservation of information critical for CV tasks while optimizing the utilization of sensor data. This work conducts experiments on various realistic scenario datasets collected by real sensor devices. Experimental results demonstrate superior performance compared to existing CS sampling techniques across the STL10, Intel, and Imagenette datasets for classification and KITTI for object detection. Compared with the baseline uniform sampling technique, the average classification accuracy shows a maximum improvement of 26.23%, 11.69%, and 18.25%, respectively, at specific sampling rates. In addition, even at very low sampling rates, the proposal is demonstrated to be robust in terms of classification and detection as compared to state-of-the-art CS techniques. By applying a high projection rate, the binary defocusing technique can dramatically increase 3D imaging speed. However, existing methods are sensitive to the varied defocusing degree, and have limited depth of field (DoF). To this end, a time–domain Gaussian fitting method is proposed in this paper. The concept of a time–domain Gaussian curve is firstly put forward, and the procedure of determining projector coordinates with a time–domain Gaussian curve is illustrated in detail. The neural network technique is applied to rapidly compute peak positions of time-domain Gaussian curves. Relying on the computing power of the neural network, the proposed method can reduce the computing time greatly. The binary defocusing technique can be combined with the neural network, and fast 3D profilometry with a large depth of field is achieved. Moreover, because the time–domain Gaussian curve is extracted from individual image pixel, it will not deform according to a complex surface, so the proposed method is also suitable for measuring a complex surface. It is demonstrated by the experiment results that our proposed method can extends the system DoF by five times, and both the data acquisition time and computing time can be reduced to less than 35 ms. Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems are widely utilized in power equipment for condition monitoring. For the collected data, there generally exists a problem—missing data of different types and patterns. This leads to the poor quality and utilization difficulties of the collected data. To address this problem, this paper customizes methodology that combines an asymmetric denoising autoencoder (ADAE) and moving average filter (MAF) to perform accurate missing data imputation. First, convolution and gated recurrent unit (GRU) are applied to the encoder of the ADAE, while the decoder still utilizes the fully connected layers to form an asymmetric network structure. The ADAE extracts the local periodic and temporal features from monitoring data and then decodes the features to realize the imputation of the multi-type missing. On this basis, according to the continuity of power data in the time domain, the MAF is utilized to fuse the prior knowledge of the neighborhood of missing data to secondarily optimize the imputed data. Case studies reveal that the developed method achieves greater accuracy compared to existing models. Simple Summary: We provide a data classification and analysis method to estimate fire risk using facility data for thermal power plants. Experimental analysis is conducted on the data classified by the proposed method for 500 megawatt (MW) and 100 MW thermal power plants. In this paper, we propose a data classification and analysis method to estimate fire risk using facility data of thermal power plants. To estimate fire risk based on facility data, we divided facilities into three states—Steady, Transient, and Anomaly—categorized by their purposes and operational conditions. This method is designed to satisfy three requirements of fire protection systems for thermal power plants. For example, areas with fire risk must be identified, and fire risks should be classified and integrated into existing systems. We classified thermal power plants into turbine, boiler, and indoor coal shed zones. Each zone was subdivided into small pieces of equipment. The turbine, generator, oil-related equipment, hydrogen (H2), and boiler feed pump (BFP) were selected for the turbine zone, while the pulverizer and ignition oil were chosen for the boiler zone. We selected fire-related tags from Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) data and acquired sample data during a specific period for two thermal power plants based on inspection of fire and explosion scenarios in thermal power plants over many years. We focused on crucial fire cases such as pool fires, 3D fires, and jet fires and organized three fire hazard levels for each zone. Experimental analysis was conducted with these data set by the proposed method for 500 MW and 100 MW thermal power plants. The data classification and analysis methods presented in this paper can provide indirect experience for data analysts who do not have domain knowledge about power plant fires and can also offer good inspiration for data analysts who need to understand power plant facilities. Three-dimensional point cloud evaluation is used in photogrammetry to validate and assess the accuracy of data acquisition in order to generate various three-dimensional products. This paper determines the optimal accuracy and correctness of a 3D point cloud produced by a low-cost spherical camera in comparison to the 3D point cloud produced by laser scanner. The fisheye images were captured from a chessboard using a spherical camera, which was calibrated using the commercial Agisoft Metashape software (version 2.1). For this purpose, the results of different calibration methods are compared. In order to achieve data acquisition, multiple images were captured from the inside area of our case study structure (an underpass in Wiesbaden, Germany) in different configurations with the aim of optimal network design for camera location and orientation. The relative orientation was generated from multiple images obtained by removing the point cloud noise. For assessment purposes, the same scene was captured with a laser scanner to generate a metric comparison between the correspondence point cloud and the spherical one. The geometric features of both point clouds were analyzed for a complete geometric quality assessment. In conclusion, this study highlights the promising capabilities of low-cost spherical cameras for capturing and generating high-quality 3D point clouds by conducting a thorough analysis of the geometric features and accuracy assessments of the absolute and relative orientations of the generated clouds. This research demonstrated the applicability of spherical camera-based photogrammetry to challenging structures, such as underpasses with limited space for data acquisition, and achieved a 0.34 RMS re-projection error in the relative orientation step and a ground control point accuracy of nearly 1 mm. In mobile eye-tracking research, the automatic annotation of fixation points is an important yet difficult task, especially in varied and dynamic environments such as outdoor urban landscapes. This complexity is increased by the constant movement and dynamic nature of both the observer and their environment in urban spaces. This paper presents a novel approach that integrates the capabilities of two foundation models, YOLOv8 and Mask2Former, as a pipeline to automatically annotate fixation points without requiring additional training or fine-tuning. Our pipeline leverages YOLO's extensive training on the MS COCO dataset for object detection and Mask2Former's training on the Cityscapes dataset for semantic segmentation. This integration not only streamlines the annotation process but also improves accuracy and consistency, ensuring reliable annotations, even in complex scenes with multiple objects side by side or at different depths. Validation through two experiments showcases its efficiency, achieving 89.05% accuracy in a controlled data collection and 81.50% accuracy in a real-world outdoor wayfinding scenario. Rotary machines commonly use rolling element bearings to support rotation of the shafts. Most machine performance imperfections are related to bearing defects. Thus, reliable bearing condition monitoring systems are critically needed in industries to provide early warning of bearing fault so as to prevent machine performance degradation and reduce maintenance costs. The objective of this paper is to develop a smart monitoring system for real-time bearing fault detection and diagnostics. Firstly, a smart sensor-based data acquisition (DAQ) system is developed for wireless vibration signal collection. Secondly, a modified variational mode decomposition (MVMD) technique is proposed for nonstationary signal analysis and bearing fault detection. The proposed MVMD technique has several processing steps: (1) the signal is decomposed into a series of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs); (2) a correlation kurtosis method is suggested to choose the most representative IMFs and construct the analytical signal; (3) envelope spectrum analysis is performed to identify the representative features and to predict bearing fault. With the emergence of wireless rechargeable sensor networks (WRSNs), the possibility of wirelessly recharging nodes using mobile charging vehicles (MCVs) has become a reality. However, existing approaches overlook the effective integration of node energy replenishment and mobile data collection processes. In this paper, we propose a joint energy replenishment and data collection scheme (D-JERDG) for WRSNs based on deep reinforcement learning. By capitalizing on the high mobility of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), D-JERDG enables continuous visits to the cluster head nodes in each cluster, facilitating data collection and range-based charging. First, D-JERDG utilizes the K-means algorithm to partition the network into multiple clusters, and a cluster head selection algorithm is proposed based on an improved dynamic routing protocol, which elects cluster head nodes based on the remaining energy and geographical location of the cluster member nodes. Afterward, the simulated annealing (SA) algorithm determines the shortest flight path. Subsequently, the DRL model multiobjective deep deterministic policy gradient (MODDPG) is employed to control and optimize the UAV instantaneous heading and speed, effectively planning UAV hover points. By redesigning the reward function, joint optimization of multiple objectives such as node death rate, UAV throughput, and average flight energy consumption is achieved. Extensive simulation results show that the proposed D-JERDG achieves joint optimization of multiple objectives and exhibits significant advantages over the baseline in terms of throughput, time utilization, and charging cost, among other indicators. The section detection of the pavement is the data basis for measuring the road smoothness, rutting, lateral slope, and structural depth. The detection of the Pavement-Section includes longitudinal-section inspection and cross-section inspection. In this paper, based on multiple laser displacement sensors, fused accelerometers and attitude sensors, and using vehicle-mounted high-speed detection, we design a sensor-fused pavement section data acquisition method, establish the relevant mathematical model, and realize the automatic acquisition of pavement longitudinal and transverse sections. The acceleration sensor is filtered to improve the accuracy of data acquisition, and the error of the detection system is calculated and analyzed. Through the actual measurement, the vehicle-mounted high-speed pavement profile detection method adopted in this paper can not only accurately detect the profile of the pavement profile, but also improve the detection efficiency, providing a cost-effective detection mode for road surface detection. This paper reviews 74 empirical publications that used high-frequency data collection tools to capture facets of small collaborative groups—i.e., papers that conduct Multimodal Collaboration Analytics (MMCA) research. We selected papers published from 2010 to 2020 and extracted their key contributions. For the scope of this paper, we focus on: (1) the sensor-based metrics computed from multimodal data sources (e.g., speech, gaze, face, body, physiological, log data); (2) outcome measures, or operationalizations of collaborative constructs (e.g., group performance, conditions for effective collaboration); (3) the connections found by researchers between sensor-based metrics and outcomes; and (4) how theory was used to inform these connections. An added contribution is an interactive online visualization where researchers can explore collaborative sensor-based metrics, collaborative constructs, and how the two are connected. In this paper, we study the regular sensory data collection of Points of Interest (PoIs) with multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) during an extended monitoring period, where each PoI is visited multiple times before its data update deadline to keep the data fresh. We observe that most existing studies ignored the important differences in the data stored in the PoIs, scheduled a plan that dispatched UAVs to visit all PoIs before the same deadline, and simply repeated the plan during the monitoring period, which undoubtedly increased the service cost of the UAVs. Considering the specific data update deadline of each PoI, we formulate a novel UAV cost minimization problem to collect the data stored in each PoI before its deadline by finding a series of plans for UAVs such that the service cost of the UAVs during the monitoring period is minimized; the service cost of the UAVs is composed of the consumed energy of the UAVs utilized for hovering for data collection and the consumed energy of the UAVs utilized for flying. To deal with the above NP-hard problem, we devise an approximation algorithm by grouping the PoIs and accessing them in batches. Then, we analyze the proposed algorithm and evaluate the performance of the algorithm through experimental simulations. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is very promising. Underwater acoustic sensor networks (UASNs) are critical to a range of applications from oceanographic data collection to submarine surveillance. In these networks, efficient energy management is critical due to the limited power resources of underwater sensors. The LEACH protocol, a popular cluster-based protocol, has been widely used in UASNs to minimize energy consumption. Despite its widespread use, the conventional LEACH protocol faces challenges such as an unoptimized cluster number and low transmission efficiency, which hinder its performance. This paper proposes an improved LEACH protocol for cluster-based UASNs, where the cluster number is optimized with an underwater energy propagation model to reduce energy consumption, and a transmission scheduling algorithm is also employed to achieve conflict-free parallel data transmission. Replication computing is introduced to the LEACH protocol to reduce the signaling in the clustering and data transmission phases. The simulation results show that the proposed protocol outperforms several conventional methods in terms of normalized average residual energy, average number of surviving nodes, average round when the first death node occurs, and the number of packets received by the base station. Traditional unidirectional power systems that produce large-scale electricity and supply it using an ultra-high voltage power grid are changing globally to increase efficiency. Current substations' protection relays rely only on internal substation data, where they are located, to detect changes. However, to more accurately detect changes in the system, various data from several external substations, including micro-grids, are required. As such, communication technology regarding data acquisition has become an essential function for next-generation substations. Data aggregators that use the GOOSE protocol to collect data inside substations in real-time have been developed, but data acquisition from external substations is challenging in terms of cost and security, so only internal substation data are used. This paper proposes the acquisition of data from external substations by applying security to R-GOOSE, defined in the IEC 61850 standard, over a public internet network. Recent studies have shown the efficacy of mobile elements in optimizing the energy consumption of sensor nodes. Current data collection approaches for waste management applications focus on exploiting IoT-enabled technologies. However, these techniques are no longer sustainable in the context of smart city (SC) waste management applications due to the emergence of large-scale wireless sensor networks (LS-WSNs) in smart cities with sensor-based big data architectures. This paper proposes an energy-efficient swarm intelligence (SI) Internet of Vehicles (IoV)-based technique for opportunistic data collection and traffic engineering for SC waste management strategies. This is a novel IoV-based architecture exploiting the potential of vehicular networks for SC waste management strategies. The proposed technique involves deploying multiple data collector vehicles (DCVs) traversing the entire network for data gathering via a single-hop transmission. However, employing multiple DCVs comes with additional challenges including costs and network complexity. Thus, this paper proposes analytical-based methods to investigate critical tradeoffs in optimizing energy consumption for big data collection and transmission in an LS-WSN such as (1) finding the optimal number of data collector vehicles (DCVs) required in the network and (2) determining the optimal number of data collection points (DCPs) for the DCVs. In the last decades, researchers have shown the potential of using Electrocardiogram (ECG) as a biometric trait due to its uniqueness and hidden nature. However, despite the great number of approaches found in the literature, no agreement exists on the most appropriate methodology. This paper presents a systematic review of data acquisition methods, aiming to understand the impact of some variables from the data acquisition protocol of an ECG signal in the biometric identification process. We searched for papers on the subject using Scopus, defining several keywords and restrictions, and found a total of 121 papers. Data acquisition hardware and methods vary widely throughout the literature. We reviewed the intrusiveness of acquisitions, the number of leads used, and the duration of acquisitions. Moreover, by analyzing the literature, we can conclude that the preferable solutions include: (1) the use of off-the-person acquisitions as they bring ECG biometrics closer to viable, unconstrained applications; (2) the use of a one-lead setup; and (3) short-term acquisitions as they required fewer numbers of contact points, making the data acquisition of benefit to user acceptance and allow faster acquisitions, resulting in a user-friendly biometric system. Thus, this paper reviews data acquisition methods, summarizes multiple perspectives, and highlights existing challenges and problems. Globally, corrosion is the costliest cause of the deterioration of metallic and concrete structures, leading to significant financial losses and unexpected loss of life. Therefore, corrosion monitoring is vital to the assessment of structures' residual performance and for the identification of pathologies in early stages for the predictive maintenance of facilities. However, the high price tag on available corrosion monitoring systems leads to their exclusive use for structural health monitoring applications, especially for atmospheric corrosion detection in civil structures. In this paper a systematic literature review is provided on the state-of-the-art electrochemical methods and physical methods used so far for corrosion monitoring compatible with low-cost sensors and data acquisition devices for metallic and concrete structures. In addition, special attention is paid to the use of these devices for corrosion monitoring and detection for in situ applications in different industries. This analysis demonstrates the possible applications of low-cost sensors in the corrosion monitoring sector. Usage of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for different tasks is widespread, as UAVs are affordable, easy to manoeuvre and versatile enough to execute missions in a reliable manner. However, there are still fields where UAVs play a minimal role regardless of their possibilities. One of these application domains is mobile network testing and measurement. Currently, the procedures used to measure the main parameters of mobile networks in an area (such as power output or its distribution in a three-dimensional space) rely on a team of specialized people performing measurements with an array of tools. This procedure is significantly expensive, time consuming and the resulting outputs leave a higher degree of precision to be desired. An open-source UAV-based Cyber-Physical System is put forward that, by means of the Galileo satellite network, a Mobile Data Acquisition System and a Graphical User Interface, can quickly retrieve reliable data from mobile network signals in a three-dimensional space with high accuracy for its visualization and analysis. The UAV tested flew at 40.43 latitude and −3.65 longitude degrees as coordinates, with an altitude over sea level of around 600–800 m through more than 40 mobile network cells and signal power displayed between −75 and −113 decibels. In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are considered an effective data collection tool. In this paper, we investigate the energy-efficient data collection problem in a UAV-enabled secure WSN without knowing the instantaneous channel state information of the eavesdropper (Eve). Specifically, the UAV collected the information from all the wireless sensors at the scheduled time and forward it to the fusion center while Eve tries to eavesdrop on this confidential information from the UAV. To surmount this intractable and convoluted mixed-integer non-convex problem, we propose an efficient iterative optimization algorithm using the block coordinate descent (BCD) method to minimize the maximum energy consumption of the ground sensor nodes (GSNs) under the constraints of secrecy outage probability (SOP), connection outage probability (COP), minimum secure data, information causality, and UAV trajectory. Brain–computer interface (BCI) technology has emerged as an influential communication tool with extensive applications across numerous fields, including entertainment, marketing, mental state monitoring, and particularly medical neurorehabilitation. Despite its immense potential, the reliability of BCI systems is challenged by the intricacies of data collection, environmental factors, and noisy interferences, making the interpretation of high-dimensional electroencephalogram (EEG) data a pressing issue. While the current trends in research have leant towards improving classification using deep learning-based models, our study proposes the use of new features based on EEG amplitude modulation (AM) dynamics. Experiments on an active BCI dataset comprised seven mental tasks to show the importance of the proposed features, as well as their complementarity to conventional power spectral features. Through combining the seven mental tasks, 21 binary classification tests were explored. In 17 of these 21 tests, the addition of the proposed features significantly improved classifier performance relative to using power spectral density (PSD) features only. Specifically, the average kappa score for these classifications increased from 0.57 to 0.62 using the combined feature set. An examination of the top-selected features showed the predominance of the AM-based measures, comprising over 77% of the top-ranked features. Accurately calibrating camera–LiDAR systems is crucial for achieving effective data fusion, particularly in data collection vehicles. Data-driven calibration methods have gained prominence over target-based methods due to their superior adaptability to diverse environments. However, current data-driven calibration methods are susceptible to suboptimal initialization parameters, which can significantly impact the accuracy and efficiency of the calibration process. In response to these challenges, this paper proposes a novel general model for the camera–LiDAR calibration that abstracts away the technical details in existing methods, introduces an improved objective function that effectively mitigates the issue of suboptimal parameter initialization, and develops a multi-level parameter optimization algorithm that strikes a balance between accuracy and efficiency during iterative optimization. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method effectively mitigates the effects of suboptimal initial calibration parameters, achieving highly accurate and efficient calibration results. Hyperspectral imagers, or imaging spectrometers, are used in many remote sensing environmental studies in fields such as agriculture, forestry, geology, and hydrology. In recent years, compact hyperspectral imagers were developed using commercial-off-the-shelf components, but there are not yet any off-the-shelf data acquisition systems on the market to deploy them. The lack of a self-contained data acquisition system with navigation sensors is a challenge that needs to be overcome to successfully deploy these sensors on remote platforms such as drones and aircraft. Our work is the first successful attempt to deploy an entirely open-source system that is able to collect hyperspectral and navigation data concurrently for direct georeferencing. In this paper, we describe a low-cost, lightweight, and deployable data acquisition device for the open-source hyperspectral imager (OpenHSI). We utilised commercial-off-the-shelf hardware and open-source software to create a compact data acquisition device that can be easily transported and deployed. The device includes a microcontroller and a custom-designed PCB board to interface with ancillary sensors and a Raspberry Pi 4B/NVIDIA Jetson. We demonstrated our data acquisition system on a Matrice M600 drone at a beach in Sydney, Australia, collecting timestamped hyperspectral, navigation, and orientation data in parallel. Using the navigation and orientation data, the hyperspectral data were georeferenced. While the entire system including the pushbroom hyperspectral imager and housing weighed 735 g, it was designed to be easy to assemble and modify. With the increasing concerns for the environment, the amount of the data monitored by wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is becoming larger and the energy required for data transmission is greater. However, sensor nodes have limited storage capacity and battery power. The WSNs are faced with the challenge of handling larger data volumes while minimizing energy consumption for transmission. To address this issue, this paper employs data compression technology to eliminate redundant information in the environmental data, thereby reducing energy consumption of sensor nodes. Additionally, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted compressed data acquisition algorithm is put forward. In this algorithm, compressive sensing (CS) is introduced to decrease the amount of data in the network and the UAV serves as a mobile aerial base station for efficient data gathering. Based on CS theory, the UAV selectively collects measurements from a subset of sensor nodes along a route planned using the optimized greedy algorithm with variation and insertion strategies. Once the UAV returns, the sink node reconstructs sensory data from these measurements using the reconstruction algorithms. Extensive experiments are conducted to verify the performance of this algorithm. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has lower energy consumption compared to other approaches. With the rapid development of industrial digitalization and intelligence, there is an urgent need to accurately depict the physical world in digital space, and, in turn, regulate and optimize the behavior of physical entities based on massive data collection and analysis. As a technology that combines virtual space and physical space, digital twin can satisfy all of the above needs, and has attracted widespread attention. Due to the promising application prospects of digital twins, both academia and industry have launched research in this field, and related studies have been conducted from different perspectives. Accordingly, some articles summarizing the existing work have also been published, but they are all from a single perspective, lacking a systematic introduction and summary. Based on this, this paper conducts a comprehensive review of the existing work on digital twins from four perspectives: data, model, network and application, and strives to gain a better understanding of the development of the field from the physical to the virtual and back to the physical. High-quality data are of utmost importance for any deep-learning application. However, acquiring such data and their annotation is challenging. This paper presents a GPU-accelerated simulator that enables the generation of high-quality, perfectly labelled data for any Time-of-Flight sensor, including LiDAR. Our approach optimally exploits the 3D graphics pipeline of the GPU, significantly decreasing data generation time while preserving compatibility with all real-time rendering engines. The presented algorithms are generic and allow users to perfectly mimic the unique sampling pattern of any such sensor. To validate our simulator, two neural networks are trained for denoising and semantic segmentation. To bridge the gap between reality and simulation, a novel loss function is introduced that requires only a small set of partially annotated real data. It enables the learning of classes for which no labels are provided in the real data, hence dramatically reducing annotation efforts. Driving is a ubiquitous activity that requires both motor skills and cognitive focus. These aspects become more problematic for some seniors, who have underlining medical conditions and tend to lose some of these capabilities. Therefore, driving can be used as a controlled environment for the frequent, non-intrusive monitoring of bio-physical and cognitive status within drivers. Such information can then be utilized for enhanced assistive vehicle controls and/or driver health monitoring. In this paper, we present a novel multi-modal smart steering sleeve (S 3 ) system with an integrated sensing platform that can non-intrusively and continuously measure a driver's physiological signals, including electrodermal activity (EDA), electromyography (EMG), and hand pressure. The sensor suite was developed by combining low-cost interdigitated electrodes with a piezoresistive force sensor on a single, flexible polymer substrate. Comprehensive characterizations on the sensing modalities were performed with promising results demonstrated. The sweat-sensing unit (SSU) for EDA monitoring works under a 100 Hz alternative current (AC) source. The EMG signal acquired by the EMG-sensing unit (EMGSU) was amplified to within 5 V. The force-sensing unit (FSU) for hand pressure detection has a range of 25 N. This flexible sensor was mounted on an off-the-shelf steering wheel sleeve, making it an add-on system that can be installed on any existing vehicles for convenient and wide-coverage driver monitoring. A cloud-based communication scheme was developed for the ease of data collection and analysis. Accurate recognition of tool state is important for maximizing tool life. However, the tool sensor data collected in real-life scenarios has unbalanced characteristics. Additionally, although graph neural networks (GNNs) show excellent performance in feature extraction in the spatial dimension of data, it is difficult to extract features in the temporal dimension efficiently. Therefore, we propose a tool state recognition method based on the Pruned Optimized Graph Neural Network-Gated Recurrent Unit (POGNN-GRU) under unbalanced data. Firstly, design the Improved-Majority Weighted Minority Oversampling Technique (IMWMOTE) by introducing an adaptive noise removal strategy and improving the MWMOTE to alleviate the unbalanced problem of data. Subsequently, propose a POG graph data construction method based on a multi-scale multi-metric basis and a Gaussian kernel weight function to solve the problem of one-sided description of graph data under a single metric basis. Then, construct the POGNN-GRU model to deeply mine the spatial and temporal features of the data to better identify the state of the tool. Finally, validation and ablation experiments on the PHM 2010 and HMoTP datasets show that the proposed method outperforms the other models in terms of identification, and the highest accuracy improves by 1.62% and 1.86% compared with the corresponding optimal baseline model. Body hydration is considered one of the most important physiological parameters to measure and one of the most challenging. Current methods to assess hydration are invasive and require costly clinical settings. The bio-impedance analysis offers a noninvasive and inexpensive tool to assess hydration, and it can be designed to be used in wearable health devices. The use of wearable electronics in healthcare applications has received increased attention over the last decade. New, emerging medical devices feature continuous patient monitoring and data collection to provide suitable treatment and preventive actions. In this paper, a model of human skin is developed and simulated to be used as a guide to designing a dehydration monitoring system based on a bio-impedance analysis technique. The study investigates the effect of applying different frequencies on the dielectric parameters of the skin and the resulting measured impedance. Two different interdigitated electrode designs are presented, and a comparison of the measurements is presented. The rectangular IDE is printed and tested on subjects to validate the bio-impedance method and study the interpretation of its results. The proposed design offers a classification criterion that can be used to assess dehydration without the need for a complex mathematical model. The development of Wireless Underground Sensor Networks (WUSNs) is a recent research axis based on sensor nodes buried a few dozen centimeters deep. The communication ranges are, however, highly reduced due to the high attenuation of electromagnetic waves in soil, leading to issues of data collection. This paper proposes to embed a data collector on an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) coming close to each buried sensor node. The whole system was developed (sensor nodes, data collector, gateway) and experimentations were carried out in real conditions. In hovering mode, the measurements on the RSSI levels with respect to the position of the UAV highlight the interest in maintaining a high altitude when the UAV is far from the node. In dynamic mode, the experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of carrying out the data collection task while the UAV is moving. The speed of the UAV has, however, to be adapted to the required time to collect the data. In the case of numerous buried sensor nodes, evolutionary algorithms are implemented to plan the trajectory of the UAV optimally. The Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) is an assessment tool used as a reliable method for clinical competence evaluation of students. This paper presents an investigation focused on the chain of survival, its related exploration, management, and technical skills, and how Virtual Reality (VR) can be used for the creation of immersive environments capable of evaluating students' performance while applying the correct protocols. In particular, the Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) procedure is studied as an essential step in the development of the chain of survival. The paper also aims to highlight the limitations of traditional methods using mechanical mannequins and the benefits of the new approaches that involve the students in virtual, immersive, and dynamic environments. Furthermore, an immersive VR station is presented as a new technique for assessing CPR performance through objective data collection and posterior evaluation. A usability test was carried out with 33 clinicians and OSCE evaluators to test the viability of the presented scenario, reproducing conditions of a real examination. The increasing popularity of portable smart devices has led to the emergence of vehicular crowdsensing as a novel approach for real-time sensing and environmental data collection, garnering significant attention across various domains. Within vehicular crowdsensing, task assignment stands as a fundamental research challenge. As the number of vehicle users and perceived tasks grows, the design of efficient task assignment schemes becomes crucial. However, existing research solely focuses on task deadlines, neglecting the importance of task duration. Additionally, the majority of privacy protection mechanisms in the current task assignment process emphasize safeguarding user location information but overlook the protection of user-perceived duration. This lack of protection exposes users to potential time-aware inference attacks, enabling attackers to deduce user schedules and device information. To address these issues in opportunistic task assignment for vehicular crowdsensing, this paper presents the minimum number of participants required under the constraint of probability coverage and proposes the User-Based Task Assignment (UBTA) mechanism, which selects the smallest set of participants to minimize the payment cost while measuring the probability of accomplishing perceived tasks by user combinations. To ensure privacy protection during opportunistic task assignment, a privacy protection method based on differential privacy is introduced. This method fuzzifies the sensing duration of vehicle users and calculates the probability of vehicle users completing sensing tasks, thus avoiding the exposure of users' sensitive data while effectively assigning tasks. In this paper, we propose the notification optimization method by providing multiple alternative times as a reminder for a forecasted activity with and without probabilistic considerations for the activity that needs to be completed and needs notification. It is important to consider various factors when sending notifications to people after obtaining the results of the forecasted activity. We should not send notifications only when we have forecasted results because future daily activities are unpredictable. Therefore, it is important to strike a balance between providing useful reminders and avoiding excessive interruptions, especially for low probabilities of forecasted activity. Our study investigates the impact of the low probability of forecasted activity and optimizes the notification time with reinforcement learning. We also show the gaps between forecasted activities that are useful for self-improvement by people for the balance of important tasks, such as tasks completed as planned and additional tasks to be completed. For evaluation, we utilize two datasets: the existing dataset and data we collected in the field with the technology we have developed. In the data collection, we have 23 activities from six participants. To evaluate the effectiveness of these approaches, we assess the percentage of positive responses, user response rate, and response duration as performance criteria. Our proposed method provides a more effective way to optimize notifications. By incorporating the probability level of activity that needs to be done and needs notification into the state, we achieve a better response rate than the baseline, with the advantage of reaching 27.15%, as well as than the other criteria, which are also improved by using probability. The popularity of bicycles as a mode of transportation has been steadily increasing. However, concerns about cyclist safety persist due to a need for comprehensive data. This data scarcity hinders accurate assessment of bicycle safety and identification of factors that contribute to the occurrence and severity of bicycle collisions in urban environments. This paper presents the development of the BSafe-360, a novel multi-sensor device designed as a data acquisition system (DAS) for collecting naturalistic cycling data, which provides a high granularity of cyclist behavior and interactions with other road users. For the hardware component, the BSafe-360 utilizes a Raspberry Pi microcomputer, a Global Positioning System (GPS) antenna and receiver, two ultrasonic sensors, an inertial measurement unit (IMU), and a real-time clock (RTC), which are all housed within a customized bicycle phone case. To handle the software aspect, BSafe-360 has two Python scripts that manage data processing and storage in both local and online databases. To demonstrate the capabilities of the device, we conducted a proof of concept experiment, collecting data for seven hours. In addition to utilizing the BSafe-360, we included data from CCTV and weather information in the data analysis step for verifying the occurrence of critical events, ensuring comprehensive coverage of all relevant information. The combination of sensors within a single device enables the collection of crucial data for bicycle safety studies, including bicycle trajectory, lateral passing distance (LPD), and cyclist behavior. Our findings show that the BSafe-360 is a promising tool for collecting naturalistic cycling data, facilitating a deeper understanding of bicycle safety and improving it. Accurate and timely occupancy prediction has the potential to improve the efficiency of energy management systems in smart buildings. Occupancy prediction heavily depends on historical occupancy-related data collected from various sensor sources. Unfortunately, a major problem in that context is the difficulty to collect training data. This situation inspired us to rethink the occupancy prediction problem, proposing the use of an original principled approach based on occupancy estimation via interactive learning to collect the needed training data. Following that, the collected data, along with various features, were fed into several algorithms to predict future occupancy. This paper mainly proposes a weakly supervised occupancy prediction framework based on office sensor readings and occupancy estimations derived from an interactive learning approach. Two studies are the main emphasis of this paper. The first is the prediction of three occupancy states, referred to as discrete states: absence, presence of one occupant, and presence of more than one occupant. The purpose of the second study is to anticipate the future number of occupants, i.e., continuous states. Extensive simulations were run to demonstrate the merits of the proposed prediction framework's performance and to validate the interactive learning-based approach's ability to contribute to the achievement of effective occupancy prediction. The results reveal that LightGBM, a machine learning model, is a better fit for short-term predictions than known recursive neural networks when dealing with a limited dataset. This paper outlines the development of an onboard computer prototype for data registration, storage, transformation, and analysis. The system is intended for health and use monitoring systems in military tactical vehicles according to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Standard Agreement for designing vehicle systems using an open architecture. The processor includes a data processing pipeline with three main modules. The first module captures the data received from sensor sources and vehicle network buses, performs a data fusion, and saves the data in a local database or sends them to a remote system for further analysis and fleet management. The second module provides filtering, translation, and interpretation for fault detection; this module will be completed in the future with a condition analysis module. The third module is a communication module for web serving data and data distribution systems according to the standards for interoperability. This development will allow us to analyze the driving performance for efficiency, which helps us to know the vehicle's condition; the development will also help us deliver information for better tactical decisions in mission systems. This development has been implemented using open software, allowing us to measure the amount of data registered and filter only the relevant data for mission systems, which avoids communication bottlenecks. The main question of this paper is what factors influence willingness to participate in a smartphone-application-based data collection where participants both fill out a questionnaire and let the app collect data on their smartphone usage. Passive digital data collection is becoming more common, but it is still a new form of data collection. Due to the novelty factor, it is important to investigate how willingness to participate in such studies is influenced by both socio-economic variables and smartphone usage behaviour. We estimate multilevel models based on a survey experiment with vignettes for different characteristics of data collection (e.g., different incentives, duration of the study). Our results show that of the socio-demographic variables, age has the largest influence, with younger age groups having a higher willingness to participate than older ones. Smartphone use also has an impact on participation. Advanced users are more likely to participate, while users who only use the basic functions of their device are less likely to participate than those who use it mainly for social media. Finally, the explorative analysis with interaction terms between levels has shown that the circumstances of data collection matter differently for different social groups. Region-function combinations are essential for smartphones to be intelligent and context-aware. The prerequisite for providing intelligent services is that the device can recognize the contextual region in which it resides. The existing region recognition schemes are mainly based on indoor positioning, which require pre-installed infrastructures or tedious calibration efforts or memory burden of precise locations. In addition, location classification recognition methods are limited by either their recognition granularity being too large (room-level) or too small (centimeter-level, requiring training data collection at multiple positions within the region), which constrains the applications of providing contextual awareness services based on region function combinations. In this paper, we propose a novel mobile system, called Echo-ID, that enables a phone to identify the region in which it resides without requiring any additional sensors or pre-installed infrastructure. Echo-ID applies Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) acoustic signals as its sensing medium which is transmitted and received by the speaker and microphones already available in common smartphones. The spatial relationships among the surrounding objects and the smartphone are extracted with a signal processing procedure. We further design a deep learning model to achieve accurate region identification, which calculate finer features inside the spatial relations, robust to phone placement uncertainty and environmental variation. Echo-ID requires users only to put their phone at two orthogonal angles for 8.5 s each inside a target region before use. We implement Echo-ID on the Android platform and evaluate it with Xiaomi 12 Pro and Honor-10 smartphones. Our experiments demonstrate that Echo-ID achieves an average accuracy of 94.6% for identifying five typical regions, with an improvement of 35.5% compared to EchoTag. In a general wireless sensor network, a sink node collects data from each node successively and then post-processes the data to obtain useful information. However, conventional methods have a scalability problem: the data collection/processing time increases with the number of nodes, and frequent transmission collisions degrade spectrum efficiency. If only statistical values of the data are needed, using over-the-air computation (AirComp) can efficiently perform data collection and computation. However, AirComp also has its problems: when the channel gain of a node is too low, (i) the transmission power of that node will be high, decreasing the lifetime of that node and the entire network, and (ii) sometimes, the computation error still occurs even though the maximal transmission power is used. To jointly solve these two problems, in this paper we investigate the relay communication for AirComp and study a relay selection protocol. The basic method selects an ordinary node with a good channel condition as a relay node, considering both computation error and power consumption. This method is further enhanced to explicitly consider network lifetime in relay selection. The problem of waste classification has been a major concern for both the government and society, and whether waste can be effectively classified will affect the sustainable development of human society. To perform fast and efficient detection of waste targets in the sorting process, this paper proposes a data augmentation + YOLO_EC waste detection system. First of all, because of the current shortage of multi-objective waste classification datasets, the heavy workload of human data collection, and the limited improvement of data features by traditional data augmentation methods, DCGAN (deep convolution generative adversarial networks) was optimized by improving the loss function, and an image-generation model was established to realize the generation of multi-objective waste images; secondly, with YOLOv4 (You Only Look Once version 4) as the basic model, EfficientNet is used as the backbone feature extraction network to realize the light weight of the algorithm, and at the same time, the CA (coordinate attention) attention mechanism is introduced to reconstruct the MBConv module to filter out high-quality information and enhance the feature extraction ability of the model. In this paper, we face the problem of task classification starting from physiological signals acquired using wearable sensors with experiments in a controlled environment, designed to consider two different age populations: young adults and older adults. Two different scenarios are considered. In the first one, subjects are involved in different cognitive load tasks, while in the second one, space varying conditions are considered, and subjects interact with the environment, changing the walking conditions and avoiding collision with obstacles. Here, we demonstrate that it is possible not only to define classifiers that rely on physiological signals to predict tasks that imply different cognitive loads, but it is also possible to classify both the population group age and the performed task. The whole workflow of data collection and analysis, starting from the experimental protocol, data acquisition, signal denoising, normalization with respect to subject variability, feature extraction and classification is described here.
