A multi-swarm-evolutionary structure based on the parasitic relationship in the biosphere is proposed in this paper and, according to the conception, the Para-PSO-ABC algorithm (ParaPA), combined with merits of the modified particle swarm optimization (MPSO) and artificial bee colony algorithm (ABC), is conducted with the multimodal routing strategy to enhance the safety and the cost issue for the mobile robot path planning problem. The evolution is divided into three stages, where the first is the independent evolutionary stage, with the same evolution strategies for each swarm. The second is the fusion stage, in which individuals are evolved hierarchically in the parasitism structure. Finally, in the interaction stage, a multi-swarm-elite strategy is used to filter the information through a predefined cross function among swarms. Meanwhile, the segment obstacle-avoiding strategy is proposed to accelerate the searching speed with two fitness functions. The best path is selected according to the performance on the safety and consumption issues. The introduced algorithm is examined with different obstacle allocations and simulated in the real routing environment compared with some typical algorithms. Text document clustering is one of the data mining techniques used in many real-world applications such as information retrieval from IoT Sensors data, duplicate content detection, and document organization. Swarm intelligence (SI) algorithms are suitable for solving complex text document clustering problems compared to traditional clustering algorithms. The previous studies show that in SI algorithms, particle swarm optimization (PSO) provides an effective solution to text document clustering problems. This PSO still needs to be improved to avoid the problems such as premature convergence to local optima. In this paper, an approach called dynamic sub-swarm of PSO (subswarm-PSO) is proposed to improve the results of PSO for text document clustering problems and avoid the local optimum by improving the global search capabilities of PSO. The results of this proposed approach were compared with the standard PSO algorithm and K-means algorithm. As for performance assurance, the evaluation metric purity is used with six benchmark data sets. The experimental results of this study show that our proposed subswarm-PSO algorithm performs best with high purity comparing the standard PSO and K-means traditional algorithms and also the execution time of subswarm-PSO comparatively takes a little less than the standard PSO algorithm. Vector Quantization (VQ) is a technique with a wide range of applications. For example, it can be used for image compression. The codebook design for VQ has great significance in the quality of the quantized signals and can benefit from the use of swarm intelligence. Initialization of the Linde–Buzo–Gray (LBG) algorithm, which is the most popular VQ codebook design algorithm, is a step that directly influences VQ performance, as the convergence speed and codebook quality depend on the initial codebook. A widely used initialization alternative is random initialization, in which the initial set of codevectors is drawn randomly from the training set. Other initialization methods can lead to a better quality of the designed codebooks. The present work evaluates the impacts of initialization strategies on swarm intelligence algorithms for codebook design in terms of the quality of the designed codebooks, assessed by the quality of the reconstructed images, and in terms of the convergence speed, evaluated by the number of iterations. Initialization strategies consist of a combination of codebooks obtained by initialization algorithms from the literature with codebooks composed of vectors randomly selected from the training set. The possibility of combining different initialization techniques provides new perspectives in the search for the quality of the VQ codebooks. Nine initialization strategies are presented, which are compared with random initialization. Initialization strategies are evaluated on the following algorithms for codebook design based on swarm clustering: modified firefly algorithm—Linde–Buzo–Gray (M-FA-LBG), modified particle swarm optimization—Linde–Buzo–Gray (M-PSO-LBG), modified fish school search—Linde–Buzo–Gray (M-FSS-LBG) and their accelerated versions (M-FA-LBGa, M-PSO-LBGa and M-FSS-LBGa) which are obtained by replacing the LBG with the accelerated LBG algorithm. The simulation results point out to the benefits of the proposed initialization strategies. The results show gains up to 4.43 dB in terms of PSNR for image Clock with M-PSO-LBG codebooks of size 512 and codebook design time savings up to 67.05% for image Clock, with M-FF-LBGa codebooks with size N = 512 , by using initialization strategies in substitution to Random initialization. This study proposes a collective motion and self-organization control of a swarm of 10 UAVs, which are divided into two clusters of five agents each. A cluster is a group of UAVs in a dedicated area and multiple clusters make a swarm. This paper designs the 3D model of the whole environment by applying graph theory. To address the aforesaid issues, this paper designs a hybrid meta-heuristic algorithm by merging the particle swarm optimization (PSO) with the multi-agent system (MAS). First, PSO only provides the best agents of a cluster. Afterward, MAS helps to assign the best agent as the leader of the nth cluster. Moreover, the leader can find the optimal path for each cluster. Initially, each cluster contains agents at random positions. Later, the clusters form a formation by implementing PSO with the MAS model. This helps in coordinating the agents inside the nth cluster. However, when two clusters combine and make a swarm in a dynamic environment, MAS alone is not able to fill the communication gap of n clusters. This study does it by applying the Vicsek-based MAS connectivity and synchronization model along with dynamic leader selection ability. Moreover, this research uses a B-spline curve based on simple waypoint defined graph theory to create the flying formations of each cluster and the swarm. Lastly, this article compares the designed algorithm with the NSGA-II model to show that the proposed model has better convergence and durability, both in the individual clusters and inside the greater swarm. Swarm intelligence is a discipline which makes use of a number of agents for solving optimization problems by producing low cost, fast and robust solutions. The dragonfly algorithm (DA), a recently proposed swarm intelligence algorithm, is inspired by the dynamic and static swarming behaviors of dragonflies, and it has been found to have a higher performance in comparison to other swarm intelligence and evolutionary algorithms in numerous applications. There are only a few surveys about the dragonfly algorithm, and we have found that they are limited in certain aspects. Hence, in this paper, we present a more comprehensive survey about DA, its applications in various domains, and its performance as compared to other swarm intelligence algorithms. We also analyze the hybrids of DA, the methods they employ to enhance the original DA, their performance as compared to the original DA, and their limitations. In view of the demand of location awareness in a special complex environment, for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) airborne multi base-station semi-passive positioning system, the hybrid positioning solutions and optimized site layout in the positioning system can effectively improve the positioning accuracy for a specific region. In this paper, the geometric dilution of precision (GDOP) formula of a time difference of arrival (TDOA) and angles of arrival (AOA) hybrid location algorithm is deduced. Mayfly optimization algorithm (MOA) which is a new swarm intelligence optimization algorithm is introduced, and a method to find the optimal station of the UAV airborne multiple base station's semi-passive positioning system using MOA is proposed. The simulation and analysis of the optimization of the different number of base stations, compared with other station layout methods, such as particle swarm optimization (PSO), genetic algorithm (GA), and artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm. MOA is less likely to fall into local optimum, and the error of regional target positioning is reduced. By simulating the deployment of four base stations and five base stations in various situations, MOA can achieve a better deployment effect. With the continuing advancements in technologies (such as machine to machine, wireless telecommunications, artificial intelligence, and big data analysis), the Internet of Things (IoT) aims to connect everything for information sharing and intelligent decision-making. Swarm intelligence (SI) provides the possibility of SI behavior through collaboration in individuals that have limited or no intelligence. Its potential parallelism and distribution characteristics can be used to realize global optimization and solve nonlinear complex problems. This paper reviews representative SI algorithms and summarizes their applications in the IoT. The main focus consists in the analysis of SI-enabled applications to wireless sensor network (WSN) and discussion of related research problems in the WSN.
