A fiber optic interferometric sensor with an intrinsic transducer along a length of the fiber is presented for ultrasound measurements of the acoustic emission from partial discharges inside oil-filled power apparatus. The sensor is designed for high sensitivity measurements in a harsh electromagnetic field environment, with wide temperature changes and immersion in oil. It allows enough sensitivity for the application, for which the acoustic pressure is in the range of units of Pa at a frequency of 150 kHz. In addition, the accessibility to the sensing region is guaranteed by immune fiber-optic cables and the optical phase sensor output. The sensor design is a compact and rugged coil of fiber. In addition to a complete calibration, the in-situ results show that two types of partial discharges are measured through their acoustic emissions with the sensor immersed in oil. Wind power is growing rapidly as a green and clean energy source. As the core part of a wind turbine, the blades are subjected to enormous stress in harsh environments over a long period of time and are therefore extremely susceptible to damage, while at the same time, they are costly, so it is important to monitor their damage in a timely manner. This paper is based on the detection of blade damage using acoustic emission signals, which can detect early minor damage and internal damage to the blades. Instead of conventional piezoelectric sensors, we use fiber optic gratings as sensing units, which have the advantage of small size and corrosion resistance. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the system is doubled by replacing the conventional FBG (fiber Bragg grating) with a π-phase-shifted FBG. For the noise problem existing in the system, this paper combines the traditional WPD (wavelet packet decomposition) denoising method with EMD (empirical mode decomposition) to achieve a better noise reduction effect. Finally, small wind turbine blades are used in the experiment and their acoustic emission signals with different damage are collected for feature analysis, which sets the stage for the subsequent detection of different damage degrees and types. High-strength bolts play a crucial role in ultra-high-pressure equipment such as bridges and railway tracks. Effective monitoring of bolt conditions is of paramount importance for common fault repair and accident prevention. This paper aims to detect and classify bolt corrosion levels accurately. We design and implement a bolt corrosion classification system based on a Wireless Acoustic Emission Sensor Network (WASN). Initially, WASN nodes collect high-speed acoustic emission (AE) signals from bolts. Then, the ReliefF feature selection algorithm is applied to identify the optimal feature combination. Subsequently, the Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) model is utilized for bolt corrosion classification. Additionally, to achieve high prediction accuracy, an improved goose algorithm (GOOSE) is employed to ensure the most suitable parameter combination for the ELM model. Experimental measurements were conducted on five classes of bolt corrosion levels: 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. The classification accuracy obtained using the proposed method was at least 98.04%. Compared to state-of-the-art classification diagnostic models, our approach exhibits superior AE signal recognition performance and stronger generalization ability to adapt to variations in working conditions. The present paper discusses the scientific and technical problem of optimizing the design and characteristics of a new type of solid-state sensors for motion parameters on bulk acoustic waves in order to increase the signal-to-noise ratio and the detectability of an informative signal against the background of its own noise and interference. Criteria for choosing materials for structural elements, including piezoelectric transducers of the sensitive element, were identified; a corresponding numerical simulation was performed using the developed program; and experimental studies according to the suggested method were carried out to validate the obtained analytical and calculated positions. The experimental results revealed the correctness of the chosen criteria for the optimization of design parameters and characteristics, demonstrated the high correlation between the results of modeling and field studies, and, thus, confirmed the prospects of using this new type of solid-state acoustic sensors of motion parameters in the navigation and control systems of highly dynamic objects. The characteristics of acoustic emission signals generated in the process of rock deformation and fission contain rich information on internal rock damage. The use of acoustic emissions monitoring technology can analyze and identify the precursor information of rock failure. At present, in the field of acoustic emissions monitoring and the early warning of rock fracture disasters, there is no real-time identification method for a disaster precursor characteristic signal. It is easy to lose information by analyzing the characteristic parameters of traditional acoustic emissions to find signals that serve as precursors to disasters, and analysis has mostly been based on post-analysis, which leads to poor real-time recognition of disaster precursor characteristics and low application levels in the engineering field. Based on this, this paper regards the acoustic emissions signal of rock fracture as a kind of speech signal generated by rock fracture uses this idea of speech recognition for reference alongside spectral analysis (STFT) and Mel frequency analysis to realize the feature extraction of acoustic emissions from rock fracture. In deep learning, based on the VGG16 convolutional neural network and AlexNet convolutional neural network, six intelligent real-time recognition models of rock fracture and key acoustic emission signals were constructed, and the network structure and loss function of traditional VGG16 were optimized. The experimental results show that these six deep-learning models can achieve the real-time intelligent recognition of key signals, and Mel, combined with the improved VGG16, achieved the best performance with 87.68% accuracy and 81.05% recall. Then, by comparing multiple groups of signal recognition models, Mel+VGG-FL proposed in this paper was verified as having a high recognition accuracy and certain recognition efficiency, performing the intelligent real-time recognition of key acoustic emission signals in the process of rock fracture more accurately, which can provide new ideas and methods for related research and the real-time intelligent recognition of rock fracture precursor characteristics. Chemical pressure storage tanks are containers designed to store fluids at high pressures, i.e., their internal pressure is higher than the atmospheric pressure. They can come in various shapes and sizes, and may be fabricated from a variety of materials. As aggressive chemical agents stored under elevated pressures can cause significant damage to both people and the environment, it is essential to develop systems for the early damage detection and the monitoring of structural integrity of such vessels. The development of early damage detection and condition monitoring systems could also help to reduce the maintenance costs associated with periodic inspections of the structure and unforeseen operational breaks due to unmonitored damage development. It could also reduce the related environmental burden. In this paper, we consider a hybrid material composed of glass-fiber-reinforced polymers (GFRPs) and a polyethylene (PE) layer that is suitable for pressurized chemical storage tank manufacturing. GFRPs are used for the outer layer of the tank structure and provides the dominant part of the construction stiffness, while the PE layer is used for protection against the stored chemical medium. The considered damage scenarios include simulated cracks and an erosion of the inner PE layer, as these can be early signs of structural damage leading to the leakage of hazardous liquids, which could compromise safety and, possibly, harm the environment. For damage detection, PZT sensors were selected due to their widely recognized applicability for the purpose of structural health monitoring. For sensor installation, it was assumed that only the outer GFRP layer was available as otherwise sensors could be affected by the stored chemical agent. The main focus of this paper is to verify whether elastic waves excited by PZT sensors, which are installed on the outer GFRP layer, can penetrate the GFRP and PE interface and can be used to detect damage occurring in the inner PE layer. The efficiency of different signal characteristics used for structure evaluation is compared for various frequencies and durations of the excitation signal as well as feasibility of PZT sensor application for passive acquisition of acoustic emission signals is verified. Composite materials are widely used, but they are often subjected to impacts from foreign objects, causing structural damage. To ensure the safety of use, it is necessary to locate the impact point. This paper investigates impact sensing and localization technology for composite plates and proposes a method of acoustic source localization for CFRP composite plates based on wave velocity-direction function fitting. This method divides the grid of composite plates, constructs the theoretical time difference matrix of the grid points, and compares it with the actual time difference to form an error matching matrix to localize the impact source. In this paper, finite element simulation combined with a lead-break experiment is used to explore the wave velocity-angle function relationship of Lamb waves in composite materials. The simulation experiment is used to verify the feasibility of the localization method, and the lead-break experimental system is built to locate the actual impact source. The results show that the acoustic emission time-difference approximation method can effectively solve the problem of impact source localization in composite structures, and the average localization error is 1.44 cm and the maximum localization error is 3.35 cm in 49 experimental points with good stability and accuracy. The time difference of arrival (TDOA) method has traditionally proven effective for locating acoustic emission (AE) sources and detecting structural defects. Nevertheless, its applicability is constrained when applied to anisotropic materials, particularly in the context of fiber-reinforced composite structures. In response, this paper introduces a novel COmposite LOcalization using Response Surface (COLORS) algorithm based on a two-step approach for precise AE source localization suitable for laminated composite structures. Leveraging a response surface developed from critical parameters, including AE velocity profiles, attenuation rates, distances, and orientations, the proposed method offers precise AE source predictions. The incorporation of updated velocity data into the algorithm yields superior localization accuracy compared to the conventional TDOA approach relying on the theoretical AE propagation velocity. The mean absolute error (MAE) for COLORS and TDOA were found to be 6.97 mm and 8.69 mm, respectively. Similarly, the root mean square error (RMSE) for COLORS and TODA methods were found to be 9.24 mm and 12.06 mm, respectively, indicating better performance of the COLORS algorithm in the context of source location accuracy. The finding underscores the significance of AE signal attenuation in minimizing AE wave velocity discrepancies and enhancing AE localization precision. This paper presents an acoustic emission (AE) detection method for refined oil storage tanks which is aimed towards specialized places such as oil storage tanks with high explosion-proof requirements, such as cave oil tanks and buried oil tanks. The method utilizes an explosion-proof acoustic emission instrument to detect the floor of a refined oil storage tank. By calculating the time difference between the defective acoustic signal and the speed of acoustic wave transmission, a mathematical model is constructed to analyze the detected signals. An independent channel AE detection system is designed, which can store the collected data in a piece of independent explosion-proof equipment, and can analyze and process the data in a safe area after the detection, solving the problems of a short signal acquisition distance and the weak safety protection applied to traditional AE instruments. A location analysis of the AE sources is conducted on the bottom plate of the tank, evaluating its corrosion condition accurately. The consistency between the evaluation and subsequent open-tank tests confirms that using AE technology effectively captures corrosion signals from oil storage tanks' bottoms. The feasibility of carrying out online inspection under the condition of oil storage in vertical steel oil tanks was verified through a comparison with open inspections, which provided a guide for determining the inspection target and opening order of large-scale oil tanks. The aim of this paper is to discuss the effect of the sensor on the acoustic emission (AE) signature and to develop a methodology to reduce the sensor effect. Pencil leads are broken on PMMA plates at different source–sensor distances, and the resulting waves are detected with different sensors. Several transducers, commonly used for acoustic emission measurements, are compared with regard to their ability to reproduce the characteristic shapes of plate waves. Their consequences for AE descriptors are discussed. Their different responses show why similar test specimens and test conditions can yield disparate results. This sensor effect will furthermore make the classification of different AE sources more difficult. In this context, a specific procedure is proposed to reduce the sensor effect and to propose an efficient selection of descriptors for data merging. Principal Component Analysis has demonstrated that using the Z-score normalized descriptor data in conjunction with the Krustal–Wallis test and identifying the outliers can help reduce the sensor effect. This procedure leads to the selection of a common descriptor set with the same distribution for all sensors. These descriptors can be merged to create a library. This result opens up new outlooks for the generalization of acoustic emission signature libraries. This aspect is a key point for the development of a database for machine learning. In this paper, a MEMS piezoresistive ultrathin silicon membrane-based strain sensor is presented. The sensor's ability to capture an acoustic emission signal is demonstrated using a Hsu–Nielsen source, and shows comparable frequency content to a commercial piezoceramic ultrasonic transducer. To the authors' knowledge, this makes the developed sensor the first known piezoresistive strain sensor which is capable of recording low-energy acoustic emissions. The improvements to the nondestructive evaluation and structural health monitoring arise from the sensor's low minimum detectable strain and wide-frequency bandwidth, which are generated from the improved fabrication process that permits crystalline semiconductor membranes and advanced polymers to be co-processed, thus enabling a dual-use application of both acoustic emission and static strain sensing. The sensor's ability to document quasi-static bending is also demonstrated and compared with an ultrasonic transducer, which provides no significant response. This dual-use application is proposed to effectively combine the uses of both strain and ultrasonic transducer sensor types within one sensor, making it a novel and useful method for nondestructive evaluations. Monitoring and maintaining the health of wind turbine blades has long been one of the challenges facing the global wind energy industry. Detecting damage to a wind turbine blade is important for planning blade repair, avoiding aggravated blade damage, and extending the sustainability of blade operation. This paper firstly introduces the existing wind turbine blade detection methods and reviews the research progress and trends of monitoring of wind turbine composite blades based on acoustic signals. Compared with other blade damage detection technologies, acoustic emission (AE) signal detection technology has the advantage of time lead. It presents the potential to detect leaf damage by detecting the presence of cracks and growth failures and can also be used to determine the location of leaf damage sources. The detection technology based on the blade aerodynamic noise signal has the potential of blade damage detection, as well as the advantages of convenient sensor installation and real-time and remote signal acquisition. Therefore, this paper focuses on the review and analysis of wind power blade structural integrity detection and damage source location technology based on acoustic signals, as well as the automatic detection and classification method of wind power blade failure mechanisms combined with machine learning algorithm. In addition to providing a reference for understanding wind power health detection methods based on AE signals and aerodynamic noise signals, this paper also points out the development trend and prospects of blade damage detection technology. This paper reviews recent advances in sensor technologies for non-destructive testing (NDT) and structural health monitoring (SHM) of civil structures. The article is motivated by the rapid developments in sensor technologies and data analytics leading to ever-advancing systems for assessing and monitoring structures. Conventional and advanced sensor technologies are systematically reviewed and evaluated in the context of providing input parameters for NDT and SHM systems and for their suitability to determine the health state of structures. This paper proposes a novel and reliable leak-detection method for pipeline systems based on acoustic emission (AE) signals. The proposed method analyzes signals from two AE sensors installed on the pipeline to detect leaks located between these two sensors. Firstly, the raw AE signals are preprocessed using empirical mode decomposition. The time difference of arrival (TDOA) is then extracted as a statistical feature of the two AE signals. The state of the pipeline (leakage/normal) is determined through comparing the statistical distribution of the TDOA of the current state with the prior normal state. Specifically, the two-sample Kolmogorov–Smirnov (K–S) test is applied to compare the statistical distribution of the TDOA feature for leak and non-leak scenarios. The K–S test statistic value in this context functions as a leakage indicator. A new criterion called leak sensitivity is introduced to evaluate and compare the performance of leak detection methods. Extensive experiments were conducted using an industrial pipeline system, and the results demonstrate the excellence of the proposed method in leak detection. In this paper, an approach to perform leak state detection and size identification for industrial fluid pipelines with an acoustic emission (AE) activity intensity index curve (AIIC), using b-value and a random forest (RF), is proposed. Initially, the b-value was calculated from pre-processed AE data, which was then utilized to construct AIICs. The AIIC presents a robust description of AE intensity, especially for detecting the leaking state, even with the complication of the multi-source problem of AE events (AEEs), in which there are other sources, rather than just leaking, contributing to the AE activity. In addition, it shows the capability to not just discriminate between normal and leaking states, but also to distinguish different leak sizes. To calculate the probability of a state change from normal condition to leakage, a changepoint detection method, using a Bayesian ensemble, was utilized. After the leak is detected, size identification is performed by feeding the AIIC to the RF. The experimental results were compared with two cutting-edge methods under different scenarios with various pressure levels and leak sizes, and the proposed method outperformed both the earlier algorithms in terms of accuracy. The impact acoustic emission (AE) of plate structures is a transient stress wave generated by local materials under impact force that contains the state information of the impacted area. If the impact causes damage, the AE from material damage will be superimposed on the impact AE. Therefore, this paper details the direct extraction of damage-induced AEs from impact AEs for the health monitoring of plate structures. The damage-induced AE was analysed based on various aspects, including the cut-off range and propagation speed characteristics of the Lamb wave mode, the correlation between the force direction and the Lamb wave mode, and the impact damage process. According to these features, the damage-induced AE wave packets were extracted and verified via impact tests on epoxy glass fibreboards. The results demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed method for determining whether an impact causes damage via the direct extraction of the damage-induced AE from the impact AE. Three-dimensional printing, often known as additive manufacturing (AM), is a groundbreaking technique that enables rapid prototyping. Monitoring AM delivers benefits, as monitoring print quality can prevent waste and excess material costs. Machine learning is often applied to automating fault detection processes, especially in AM. This paper explores recent research on machine learning-based mechanical fault monitoring systems in fused deposition modeling (FDM). Specifically, various machine learning-based algorithms are applied to measurements extracted from different parts of a 3D printer to diagnose and identify faults. The studies often use mechanical-based fault analysis from data gathered from sensors that measure attitude, acoustic emission, acceleration, and vibration signals. Acoustic emission (AE) has received increased interest as a structural health monitoring (SHM) technique for various materials, including laminated polymer composites. Piezoelectric sensors, including PZT (piezoelectric ceramic) and PVDF (piezoelectric polymer), can monitor AE in materials. The thickness of the piezoelectric sensors (as low as 28 µm—PVDF) allows embedding the sensors within the laminated composite, creating a smart material. Incorporating piezoelectric sensors within composites has several benefits but presents numerous difficulties and challenges. This paper provides an overview of acoustic emission testing, concluding with a discussion on embedding piezoelectric AE sensors within fibre-polymer composites. Various aspects are covered, including the underlying AE principles in fibre-based composites, factors that influence the reliability and accuracy of AE measurements, methods to artificially induce acoustic emission, and the correlation between AE events and damage in polymer composites. Evaluating the condition of a Hadfield steel crossing nose using existing inspection methods is subject to accessibility and geographical constraints. Thus, the use of conditional monitoring techniques to complement the existing inspection methods has become increasingly necessary. This paper focuses on the study of acoustic emission (AE) behaviour and its correlation with fatigue crack growth in Hadfield steel during bending fatigue tests. The probability density function for acoustic emission parameters was analysed based on the power law distribution. The results show that a sharp increase in the moving average and cumulative sum of the AE parameter can give early warning against the final failure of Hadfield steel. Two parts (Part 1 and Part 2) can be identified using the change in the slope of duration rate (dD/dN) vs. ΔK plot during the stable fatigue crack growth (FCG) process where Paris's law is valid. The fitted power law exponent of AE parameters is smaller in Part 2 than in Part 1. The novelty of this research lies in the use of the fitted power law distribution of AE parameters for monitoring fatigue damage evolution in Hadfield steel, unlike existing AE fatigue monitoring methodology, which relies solely on the analysis of AE parameter trends. One of the most important strategies for preventative factory maintenance is anomaly detection without the need for dedicated sensors for each industrial unit. The implementation of sound-data-based anomaly detection is an unduly complicated process since factory-collected sound data are frequently corrupted and affected by ordinary production noises. The use of acoustic methods to detect the irregularities in systems has a long history. Unfortunately, limited reference to the implementation of the acoustic approach could be found in the failure detection of industrial machines. This paper presents a systematic review of acoustic approaches in mechanical failure detection in terms of recent implementations and structural extensions. The 52 articles are selected from IEEEXplore, Science Direct and Springer Link databases following the PRISMA methodology for performing systematic literature reviews. The study identifies the research gaps while considering the potential in responding to the challenges of the mechanical failure detection of industrial machines. The results of this study reveal that the use of acoustic emission is still dominant in the research community. In addition, based on the 52 selected articles, research that discusses failure detection in noisy conditions is still very limited and shows that it will still be a challenge in the future. Hyper-velocity impact (HVI) caused by a collision between orbital debris and spacecraft exists widely in outer space, and it poses a threat to spacecraft. This paper proposes a probabilistic hyperbola method based on Lamb waves analysis to detect and locate the impact in stiffened aluminum (Al) plates. A hybrid model using finite element analysis (FEA) and smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) was developed to gain an insight into characteristics of HVI-induced acoustic emission (AE) and shock wave propagation. In addition, an experimental validation was carried out with a two-stage light gas gun, giving an aluminum projectile a velocity of several kilometers per second. Then a quantitative agreement is obtained between numerical and experimental results, demonstrating the correctness of the hybrid model and facilitating the explanation of received AE signals in experiments. Signal analysis shows that the shock wave quickly converts to a Lamb wave as it propagates from the HVI spot, and the zeroth-order symmetric wave mode (S0) dominates wave signal energy. The S0 wave is dispersive and shows a wide frequency range, with dominant magnitudes below 500 kHz. Finally, the HVI experiment results obtained with a light gas gun showed that the average location error could be less than 1 cm with only four sensors for a 1-square-meter stiffened metal plate. Damage localization methods for composite materials are a popular research topic at present. The time-difference-blind localization method and beamforming localization method are often individually utilized in the localization of the acoustic emission sources of composite materials. Based on the performances of the two methods, a joint localization method for the acoustic emission sources of composite materials is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the performance of the time-difference-blind localization method and the beamforming localization method were analyzed. Then, with the advantages and disadvantages of these two methods in mind, a joint localization method was proposed. Finally, the performance of the joint localization method was verified using simulations and experiments. The results show that the joint localization method can reduce the localization time by half compared with the beamforming localization method. The condition of a joint in a human being is prone to wear and several pathologies, particularly in the elderly and athletes. Current means towards assessing the overall condition of a joint to assess for a pathology involve using tools such as X-ray and magnetic resonance imaging, to name a couple. These expensive methods are of limited availability in resource-constrained environments and pose the risk of radiation exposure to the patient. The prospect of acoustic emissions (AEs) presents a modality that can monitor the joints' conditions passively by recording the high-frequency stress waves emitted during their motion. One of the main challenges associated with this sensing method is decoding and linking acquired AE signals to their source event. In this paper, we investigate AEs' use to identify five kinds of joint-wear pathologies using a contrast of expert-based handcrafted features and unsupervised feature learning via deep wavelet decomposition (DWS) alongside 12 machine learning models. The results showed an average classification accuracy of 90 ± 7.16% and 97 ± 3.77% for the handcrafted and DWS-based features, implying good prediction accuracies across the various devised approaches. Subsequent work will involve the potential application of regressions towards estimating the associated stage and extent of a wear condition where present, which can form part of an online system for the condition monitoring of joints in human beings. With the worldwide carbon neutralization boom, low-speed heavy load bearings have been widely used in the field of wind power. Bearing failure generates impulses when the rolling element passes the cracked surface of the bearing. Over the past decade, acoustic emission (AE) techniques have been used to detect failure signals. However, the high sampling rates of AE signals make it difficult to design and extract fault features; thus, deep neural network-based approaches have been proposed. In this paper, we proposed an improved RepVGG bearing fault diagnosis technique. The normalized and noise-reduced bearing signals were first converted into Mel frequency cepstrum coefficients (MFCCs) and then inputted into the model. In addition, the exponential moving average method was used to optimize the model and improve its accuracy. Data were extracted from the test bench and wind turbine main shaft bearing. Four damage classes were studied experimentally. The experimental results demonstrated that the improved RepVGG model could be employed for classifying low-speed heavy load bearing states by using MFCCs. The article presents in detail the construction of a low-cost, portable online PD monitoring system based on the acoustic emission (AE) technique. A highly sensitive piezoelectric transducer was used as the PD detector, whose frequency response characteristics were optimized to the frequency of AE waves generated by discharges in oil–paper insulation. The popular and inexpensive Teensy 3.2 development board featuring a 32-bit MK20DX256 microcontroller with the ARM Cortex-M4 core was used to count the AE pulses. The advantage of the system is its small dimensions and weight, easy and quick installation on the transformer tank, storage of measurement data on a memory card, battery power supply, and immediate readiness for operation without the need to configure. This system may contribute to promoting the idea of short-term (several days or weeks) PD monitoring, especially in developing countries where, with the dynamically growing demand for electricity, the need for inexpensive transformer diagnostics systems is also increasing. Another area of application is medium-power transformers (up to 100 MVA), where temporary PD monitoring using complex measurement systems requiring additional infrastructure (e.g., control cabinet, cable ducts for power supply, and data transmission) and qualified staff is economically unjustified. Injection moulding (IM) is an important industrial process, known to be the most used plastic formation technique. Demand for faster cycle times and higher product customisation is driving interest in additive manufacturing (AM) as a new method for mould tool manufacturing. The use of AM offers advantages such as greater design flexibility and conformal cooling of components to reduce cycle times and increase product precision. However, shortcomings of metal additive manufacturing, such as porosity and residual stresses, introduce uncertainties about the reliability and longevity of AM tooling. The injection moulding process relies on high volumes of produced parts and a minimal amount of tool failures. This paper reviews the demands for tool condition monitoring systems for AM-manufactured mould tools; although tool failures in conventionally manufactured tooling are rare, they do occur, usually due to cracking, deflection, and channel blockages. However, due to the limitations of the AM process, metal 3D-printed mould tools are susceptible to failures due to cracking, delamination and deformation. Due to their success in other fields, acoustic emission, accelerometers and ultrasound sensors offer the greatest potential in mould tool condition monitoring. Due to the noisy machine environment, sophisticated signal processing and decision-making algorithms are required to prevent false alarms or the missing of warning signals. This review outlines the state of the art in signal decomposition and both data- and model-based approaches to determination of the current state of the tool, and how these can be employed for IM tool condition monitoring. The development of such a system would help to ensure greater industrial uptake of additive manufacturing of injection mould tooling, by increasing confidence in the technology, further improving the efficiency and productivity of the sector. Leaks from pipes and valves are a reputational issue in industry. Maintenance of pipeline integrity is becoming a growing challenge due to the serious socioeconomic consequences. This paper presents a secondary phase transform (PHAT) cross-correlation method to improve the performance of the acoustic methods based on cross-correlation for pipeline leakage detection. Acoustic emission signals generated by pipe leakage are first captured by the sensors at different locations, and are subsequently analyzed using the cross-correlation curve to determine whether leakage is occurring. When leakage occurs, time delay estimation (TDE) is further carried out by peak search in the cross-correlation curve between the two sensor signals. In the analysis, the proposed method calculates the secondary cross-correlation function before the PHAT operation. A sinc interpolation method is then introduced for automatic searching the peak value of the cross-correlation curve. Numerical simulations and experimental results confirm the improved performance of the proposed method for noise suppression and accurate TDE compared to the basic cross-correlation method, which may be beneficial in engineering applications. The acoustic emission (AE) technique is one of the most widely used in the field of structural monitoring. Its popularity mainly stems from the fact that it belongs to the category of non-destructive techniques (NDT) and allows the passive monitoring of structures. The technique employs piezoelectric sensors to measure the elastic ultrasonic wave that propagates in the material as a result of the crack formation's abrupt release of energy. The recorded signal can be investigated to obtain information about the source crack, its position, and its typology (Mode I, Mode II). Over the years, many techniques have been developed for the localization, characterization, and quantification of damage from the study of acoustic emission. The onset time of the signal is an essential information item to be derived from waveform analysis. This information combined with the use of the triangulation technique allows for the identification of the crack location. In the literature, it is possible to find many methods to identify, with increasing accuracy, the onset time of the P-wave. Indeed, the precision of the onset time detection affects the accuracy of identifying the location of the crack. In this paper, two techniques for the definition of the onset time of acoustic emission signals are presented. The first method is based on the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) while the second one relies on the use of artificial intelligence (AI). A recurrent convolutional neural network (R-CNN) designed for sound event detection (SED) is trained on three different datasets composed of seismic signals and acoustic emission signals to be tested on a real-world acoustic emission dataset. The new method allows taking advantage of the similarities between acoustic emissions, seismic signals, and sound signals, enhancing the accuracy in determining the onset time. Offshore support structures and mooring systems are predominantly subject to corrosion and fatigue. These structures are typically covered with marine growth of various types. Conventional inspection methods for assessment of the structural integrity require access to the cleaned surface of these structures; however, the cleaning process is highly undesirable from the technical, economical, and environmental points of view. This paper highlights research on feasibility assessment of detection and localization of corrosion damage under marine growth using acoustic emission (AE). Experiments were conducted on two carbon steel plates, one baseline sample and one covered with artificially fabricated marine growth. The results of accelerated corrosion experiments suggest that corrosion-induced ultrasound signals can be detected with satisfactory signal-to-noise ratio using non-contact AE sensors. Ultrasound waves passing through marine growth showed around 12 dB drop in amplitude when compared to the base plate. The paper describes a new adaptive approach to the investigation of acoustic emission of rocks, the anomalies of which may serve as short-term precursors of strong earthquakes. The basis of the approach is complex methods for monitoring acoustic emission and for analysis of its time-frequency content. Piezoceramic hydrophones and vector receivers, installed at the bottom of natural and artificial water bodies, as well as in boreholes with water, are used as acoustic emission sensors. To perform a time-frequency analysis of geoacoustic signals, we use a sparse approximation based on the developed Adaptive Matching Pursuit algorithm. The application of this algorithm in the analysis makes it possible to adapt to the concrete characteristics of each geoacoustic pulse. Results of the application of the developed approach for the investigation of acoustic emission anomalies, occurring before earthquakes, are presented. We analyzed the earthquakes, that occurred from 2011 to 2016 in the seismically active region of the Kamchatka peninsula, which is a part of the circum-Pacific orogenic belt also known as the "Ring of Fire". It was discovered that geoacoustic pulse frequency content changes before a seismic event and returns to the initial state after an earthquake. That allows us to make a conclusion on the transformation of acoustic emission source scales before earthquakes. Acoustic emission (AE) sensing is an increasingly researched topic in the context of orthopedics and has a potentially high diagnostic value in the non-invasive assessment of joint disorders, such as osteoarthritis and implant loosening. However, a high level of reliability associated with the technology is necessary to make it appropriate for use as a clinical tool. This paper presents a test-retest and intrasession reliability evaluation of AE measurements of the knee during physical tasks: cycling, knee lifts and single-leg squats. Three sessions, each involving eight healthy volunteers were conducted. For the cycling activity, ICCs ranged from 0.538 to 0.901, while the knee lifts and single-leg squats showed poor reliability (ICC < 0.5). Intrasession ICCs ranged from 0.903 to 0.984 for cycling and from 0.600 to 0.901 for the other tasks. The results of this study show that movement consistency across multiple recordings and minimizing the influence of motion artifacts are essential for higher test reliability. It was shown that motion artifact resistant sensor mounting and the use of baseline movements to assess sensor attachment can improve the sensing reliability of AE techniques. While acoustic emission (AE) testing can be used as a valuable technique in structural health monitoring and non-destructive testing, little research has been conducted to establish its sources, particularly in 2024-T3 aluminium alloys. The major contribution of this work is that it provides a method to obtain a better linear relationship of count rate with crack growth rate based on waveform. This paper aims to characterise AE sources by synchronising the AE waveforms with load levels and then to propose possible dominant frequency ranges. The AE waveforms during fatigue crack growth in edge-notched 2024-T3 aluminium specimens, from an initial crack length of 10 mm to 70 mm, were collected at two different load ratios R = 0.125 and 0.5. At the same time, the crack growth rate was determined using thermal imaging and associated control software. The AE waveforms obtained were processed using the fast Fourier transform. It was shown that a significantly higher AE count rate was recorded at R = 0.125 compared to R = 0.5 when the maximum load was kept the same. This means that the R-ratio would affect the total amount of AE activities collected. It was also found that the dominant frequency range of the AE waveforms directly related to crack growth was 152–487 kHz, and the ranges due to crack closure were likely to be 310 kHz–316 kHz and 500–700 kHz. Based on the proposed frequency ranges, waveform selection was conducted and a better linear relationship between count rate and crack growth rate was observed. Low-noise surfaces have become a common mitigation action in the last decade, so much so that different methods for feature extraction have been established to evaluate their efficacy. Among these, the Close Proximity Index (CPX) evaluates the noise emissions by means of multiple runs at different speeds performed with a vehicle equipped with a reference tire and with acoustic sensors close to the wheel. However, signals acquired with CPX make it source oriented, and the analysis does not consider the real traffic flow of the studied site for a receiver-oriented approach. These aspects are remedied by Statistical Pass-By (SPB), a method based on sensor feature extraction with live detection of events; noise and speed acquisitions are performed at the roadside in real case scenarios. Unfortunately, the specific SPB requirements for its measurement setup do not allow an evaluation in urban context unless a special setup is used, but this may alter the acoustical context in which the measurement was performed. The present paper illustrates the testing and validation of a method named Urban Pass-By (U-SPB), developed during the LIFE NEREiDE project. U-SPB originates from standard SPB, exploits unattended measurements and develops an in-lab feature detection and extraction procedure. The U-SPB extends the evaluation in terms of before/after data comparison of the efficiency of low-noise laying in an urban context while combining the estimation of long-term noise levels and traffic parameters for other environmental noise purposes, such as noise mapping and action planning. Acoustic emission (AE) is an emerging technology for real-time non-destructive testing of structures. While research on a simulated AE source in rail and testing on rail material using small beam samples have been conducted, a study is required in lab environment to investigate AE waveform characteristics generated by crack in rail. In this paper, a three-point bending test is conducted on an actual rail section of 1500 mm with transverse damage of 38% head area to simulate AE source due to crack opening in the rail. AE signals are recorded for three different loads. For data analysis, unsupervised machine learning algorithms such as k-means, fuzzy-C mean and gaussian mixture model are used to cluster and filter out usable signals from the whole dataset corrupted by noisy signals from various sources. k-mean with principal component was observed to be best technique based on silhouette score. The frequency and amplitude of waveform have been discussed in relation to load and crack opening displacement. This study establishes a baseline for linking load, crack opening, and AE wave characteristics. The grouted sleeve connection is one of the most widely used connections for prefabricated buildings (PBs). Usually, its quality can have a significant impact on the safety of the whole PB, especially for the internal flaws that form during sleeve grouting. It is directly related to the mechanical performance and failure behavior of the grouted sleeve. Therefore, it is essential to understand the damage progression of the defective grouted sleeve connection. However, destructive testing is the mainstream measure to evaluate the grout sleeves, which is not applicable for in situ inspection. Therefore, this paper proposes a combined acoustic emission (AE) and ultrasonic testing (UT) method to characterize the damage progress of a grouted sleeve with different degrees of internal flaws under tensile loading. The UT was conducted before loading to evaluate the internal flaws. Additionally, the AE was used as the processing monitoring technique during the tensile testing. Two damage modes were identified: (i) brittle mode associated with the rebar pullout; (ii) ductile mode associated with the rapture of the rebar. The UT energy ratio was selected as the most sensitive feature to the internal flaws, both numerically and experimentally. The AE signatures of different damage phases and different damage modes were determined and characterized. For the brittle and ductile damage modes, two and three phases appeared in the AE activities, respectively. The proposed combined AE and UT method can provide a reliable and convenient nondestructive evaluation of grouted sleeves with internal flaws. This paper deals with the design and development of a silver–polyester thick film sensor and associated system for the wear-out detection of single-point cutting tools for low-duty cycle machining operations. Conventional means of wear-out detection use dynamometers, accelerometers, microphones, acoustic emission sensors, thermal infrared cameras, and machine vision systems that detect tool wear during the process. Direct measurements with optical instruments are accurate but affect the machining process. In this study, the use of a thick film sensor to detect wear-out for aa real-time low-duty machining operation was proposed to eliminate the limitations of the current methods. The proposed sensor monitors the tool condition accurately as the wear acts directly on the sensor, which makes the system simple and more reliable. The effect of tool temperature on the sensor during the machining operation was also studied to determine the displacement/deformation of tracing and the polymer substrate at different service temperatures. The proposed tool wear detection system with the silver–polyester thick film sensor mounted directly on the cutting tool tip proved to be highly capable of detecting the tool wear with good reliability. The identification of particular types of damage in wind turbine blades using acoustic emission (AE) techniques is a significant emerging field. In this work, a 45.7-m turbine blade was subjected to flap-wise fatigue loading for 21 days, during which AE was measured by internally mounted piezoelectric sensors. This paper focuses on using unsupervised pattern recognition methods to characterize different AE activities corresponding to different fracture mechanisms. A sequential feature selection method based on a k-means clustering algorithm is used to achieve a fine classification accuracy. The visualization of clusters in peak frequency-frequency centroid features is used to correlate the clustering results with failure modes. The positions of these clusters in time domain features, average frequency-MARSE, and average frequency-peak amplitude are also presented in this paper (where MARSE represents the Measured Area under Rectified Signal Envelope). Tool wear monitoring is a critical issue in advanced manufacturing systems. In the search for sensing devices that can provide information about the grinding process, Acoustic Emission (AE) appears to be a promising technology. The present paper presents a novel deep learning-based proposal for grinding wheel wear status monitoring using an AE sensor. The most relevant finding is the possibility of efficient feature extraction form frequency plots using CNNs. Feature extraction from FFT plots requires sound domain-expert knowledge, and thus we present a new approach to automated feature extraction using a pre-trained CNN. Using the features extracted for different industrial grinding conditions, t-SNE and PCA clustering algorithms were tested for wheel wear state identification. Results are compared for different industrial grinding conditions. The initial state of the wheel, resulting from the dressing operation, is clearly identified for all the experiments carried out. This is a very important finding, since dressing strongly affects operation performance. When grinding parameters produce acute wear of the wheel, the algorithms show very good clustering performance using the features extracted by the CNN. Traffic tunnels are important engineering structures in transportation, and their stability is critical to traffic safety. In particular, when these tunnels are in an earthquake-prone area, the rupture process under seismic excitation needs to be studied in depth for safer tunnel design. In this paper, based on a construction project on the Nairobi-Malaba railway in East Africa, a laboratory shaking table test with 24 working cases of seismic excitation on a mountain tunnel is designed, and the acoustic emission (AE) technique is employed to investigate the tunnel rupture process. The results show that the high frequency components between 20 and 30 kHz of AE signals are the tunnel rupturing signals under the seismic excitation under such conditions. The tunnel vault and the arch foot are prone to rupture during the seismic excitation, and the initial rupture in the arch foot and vault of the tunnel occur under the horizontal and vertical Kobe wave seismic excitation, respectively, with a maximum acceleration of 0.4 g. After the rupture initiation, the tunnel arch foot continues to rupture in the subsequent working cases regardless of whether the excitation direction is horizontal or vertical, while the tunnel vault does not rupture continuously with the implementation of the subsequent excitations. This paper presents the implementation of a measurement system that uses a four microphone array and a data-driven algorithm to estimate depth of cut during end milling operations. The audible range acoustic emission signals captured with the microphones are combined using a spectral subtraction and a blind source separation algorithm to reduce the impact of noise and reverberation. Afterwards, a set of features are extracted from these signals which are finally fed into a nonlinear regression algorithm assisted by machine learning techniques for the contactless monitoring of the milling process. The main advantages of this algorithm lie in relatively simple implementation and good accuracy in its results, which reduce the variance of the current noncontact monitoring systems. To validate this method, the results have been compared with the values obtained with a precision dynamometer and a geometric model algorithm obtaining a mean error of 1% while maintaining an STD below 0.2 mm. This paper proposes a new technique for the construction of a concrete-beam health indicator based on the Kullback–Leibler divergence (KLD) and deep learning. Health indicator (HI) construction is a vital part of remaining useful lifetime (RUL) approaches for monitoring the health of concrete structures. Through the construction of a HI, the deterioration process can be processed and portrayed so that it can be forwarded to a prediction module for RUL prognosis. The degradation progression and failure can be identified by predicting the RUL based on the situation of the current specimen; as a result, maintenance can be planned to reduce safety risks, reduce financial costs, and prolong the specimen's useful lifetime. The portrayal of deterioration through HI construction from raw acoustic emission (AE) data is performed using a deep neural network (DNN), whose parameters are obtained by pretraining and fine tuning using a stack autoencoder (SAE). Kullback–Leibler divergence, which is calculated between a reference normal-conditioned signal and a current unknown signal, was used to represent the deterioration process of concrete structures, which has not been investigated for the concrete beams so far. The DNN-based constructor then learns to generate HI from raw data with KLD values as the training label. The HI construction result was evaluated with run-to-fail test data of concrete specimens with two measurements: fitness analysis of the construction result and RUL prognosis. The results confirm the reliability of KLD in portraying the deterioration process, showing a large improvement in comparison to other methods. In addition, this method requires no adept knowledge of the nature of the AE or the system fault, which is more favorable than model-based approaches where this level of expertise is compulsory. Based on the actual monitoring data of the acoustic emission (AE) ground pressure monitoring and positioning system, this paper introduces fractal theory and the multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis (MF-DFA) method to estimate the waveform multifractal spectrum of goaf rock acoustic emission signals and investigate multifractal time-varying response characteristics. The research results show that the wavelet hard thresholding method has the best noise reduction effect on the original signal, and the box counting dimension has a strong waveform identification effect. Before deformation damage occurs, fractal spectral width Δα shows an increase and then decrease and the fluctuation scale factor Δf(α) decreases and then increases. When damage occurs, fractal spectral width Δα decreases and then stabilizes and concentrates. Simultaneously, the fluctuation scale factor Δf(α) keeps decreasing until the lowest point, and then shows an increasing trend until it reaches a stable state. Acoustic emission technology has been applied to many fields for many years. However, the conventional piezoelectric acoustic emission sensors cannot be used in extreme environments, such as those with heavy electromagnetic interference, high pressure, or strong corrosion. In this paper, a novel fiber-optic ring acoustic emission sensor is proposed. The sensor exhibits high sensitivity, anti-electromagnetic interference, and corrosion resistance. First, the principle of a novel fiber-optic ring sensor is introduced. Different from piezoelectric and other fiber acoustic emission sensors, this novel sensor includes both a sensing skeleton and a sensing fiber. Second, a heterodyne interferometric demodulating method is presented. In addition, a fiber-optic ring sensor acoustic emission system is built based on this method. Finally, fiber-optic ring acoustic emission experiments are performed. The novel fiber-optic ring sensor is glued onto the surface of an aluminum plate. The 150 kHz standard continuous sinusoidal signals and broken lead signals are successfully detected by the novel fiber-optic ring acoustic emission sensor. In addition, comparison to the piezoelectric acoustic emission sensor is performed, which shows the availability and reliability of the novel fiber-optic ring acoustic emission sensor. The latest developments in automobile design have allowed them to be equipped with various sensing devices. Multiple sensors such as cameras and radar systems can be simultaneously used for active safety systems in order to overcome blind spots of individual sensors. This paper proposes a novel sensing technique for catching up and tracking an approaching vehicle relying on an acoustic cue. First, it is necessary to extract a robust spatial feature from noisy acoustical observations. In this paper, the spatio-temporal gradient method is employed for the feature extraction. Then, the spatial feature is filtered out through sequential state estimation. A particle filter is employed to cope with a highly non-linear problem. Dry-type insulated transformers stand out for their higher applicability in substations, high-voltage instrumentation systems, and electrical installations. In this machine, the insulation system is constituted of dielectric materials such as epoxy resin and Nomex paper. Some critical issues in the operation of this equipment, such as overload, moisture, or heat, can induce a slow degradation of the physical–chemical properties of the dielectric materials, which can culminate in the total failure of the transformer. However, before the transformer's shutdown, it is common to detect discharge activity in the insulation system. Based on this issue, this work proposes an experimental and comparative analysis between acoustic emission and Hall-effect sensors, aiming at differentiating discharges in epoxy resin and Nomex paper, materials that constitute the insulation of the dry-type insulated transformers. Two signal processing techniques were studied: traditional frequency analysis and discrete wavelet transform. The objective is to develop signal processing techniques to differentiate each type of discharge since different discharges require different maintenance actions. The results obtained indicate that acoustic emission sensors and Hall sensors are promising in differentiating discharge in epoxy resin and Nomex paper. Furthermore, the pattern recognition tools presented by this work, which associated the wavelet levels energies and the energy of the full signals with the average band and the equivalent bandwidth, were effective to perform feature extraction of power transformer condition. Power transformers are crucial in an electric power system. Failures in transformers can affect the quality and cause interruptions in the power supply. Partial discharges are a phenomenon that can cause failures in the transformers if not properly monitored. Typically, the monitoring requires high-cost corrective maintenance or even interruptions of the power system. Therefore, the development of online non-invasive monitoring systems to detect partial discharges in power transformers has great relevance since it can reduce significant maintenance costs. Although commercial acoustic emission sensors have been used to monitor partial discharges in power transformers, they still represent a significant cost. In order to overcome this drawback, this paper presents a study of the feasibility of low-cost piezoelectric sensors to identify partial discharges in mineral insulating oil of power transformers. The analysis of the feasibility of the proposed low-cost sensor is performed by its comparison with a commercial acoustic emission sensor commonly used to detect partial discharges. The comparison between the responses in the time and frequency domain of both sensors was carried out and the experimental results indicate that the proposed piezoelectric sensors have great potential in the detection of acoustic waves generated by partial discharges in insulation oil, contributing for the popularization of this noninvasive technique. Three-section landslides are renowned for their immense size, concealed development process, and devastating impact. This study conducted physical model tests to simulate one special geological structure called a three-section-within landslide. The failure process and precursory characteristics of the tested samples were meticulously analyzed using video imagery, micro-seismic (MS) signals, and acoustic emission (AE) signals, with a focus on event activity, intensity, and frequency. A novel classification method based on AE waveform characteristics was proposed, categorizing AE signals into burst signals and continuous signals. The findings reveal distinct differences in the evolution of these signals. Burst signals appeared exclusively during the crack propagation and failure stages. During these stages, the cumulative AE hits of burst signals increased gradually, with amplitude rising and then declining. High-amplitude burst signals were predominantly distributed in the middle- and high-frequency bands. In contrast, cumulative AE hits of continuous signals escalated rapidly, with amplitude monotonously increasing, and high-amplitude continuous signals were primarily distributed in the low-frequency band. The emergence of burst signals and high-frequency AE signals indicated the generation of microcracks, serving as early-warning indicators. Notably, the early-warning points of AE signals were detected earlier than those of video imagery and MS signals. Furthermore, the early-warning point of burst signals occurred earlier than those of continuous signals, and the early-warning point of the classification method preceded that of overall AE signals. To study the effect of frequency on the attenuation characteristics of acoustic emission signals in wood, in this paper, two types of hard wood and soft wood were studied separately, and the energy attenuation model of the propagation process of AE sources with different frequencies was established. First, using the piezoelectric inverse effect of the AE sensor, an arbitrary waveform generator was used to generate frequency-tunable pulses in the range of 1 kHz to 150 kHz as the AE source, where the AE source energy could be regulated by the output voltage level. Then, five AE sensors were placed at equal intervals of 100 mm on the surface of the specimen to collect AE signals, and the sampling frequency was set to 500 kHz. Finally, the energy value of AE signal of each sensor was calculated based on the AC principle, and the energy attenuation model was established by exponential fitting. The results showed that both the amplitude and energy of the AE signals of different frequencies showed negative exponential decay with the increase of propagation distance, and, at the same frequency, the change of AE source energy level had no significant effect on its attenuation rate. Compared with hard wood, the energy attenuation of the AE signal of soft wood was more sensitive to the change of frequency, and, at the same frequency, the attenuation rate of soft wood was smaller than that of hard wood. In recent years, acoustic emission (AE) sensors and AE-based techniques have been developed and tested for gearbox fault diagnosis. In general, AE-based techniques require much higher sampling rates than vibration analysis-based techniques for gearbox fault diagnosis. Therefore, it is questionable whether an AE-based technique would give a better or at least the same performance as the vibration analysis-based techniques using the same sampling rate. To answer the question, this paper presents a comparative study for gearbox tooth damage level diagnostics using AE and vibration measurements, the first known attempt to compare the gearbox fault diagnostic performance of AE- and vibration analysis-based approaches using the same sampling rate. Partial tooth cut faults are seeded in a gearbox test rig and experimentally tested in a laboratory. Results have shown that the AE-based approach has the potential to differentiate gear tooth damage levels in comparison with the vibration-based approach. Effective, accurate and adequately early detection of any potential defects in power transformers is still a challenging issue. As the acoustic method is known as one of the noninvasive and nondestructive testing methods, this paper proposes a new approach of the classification method for defect identification in power transformers based on the acoustic measurements. Typical application of acoustic emission (AE) method is the detection of partial discharges (PD); however, during PD measurements other defects may also be identified in the transformer. In this research, a database of various signal sources recorded during acoustic PD measurements in real-life power transformers over several years was gathered. Furthermore, all of the signals are divided into two groups (PD/other) and in the second step into eight classes of various defects. Based on these, selected classification models including machine learning algorithms were applied to training and validation. Energy patterns based on the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) were used as model inputs. As a result, the presented method allows one to identify with high accuracy, not only the selected kind of PD (1st step), but other kinds of faults or anomalies within the transformer being tested (2nd step). The proposed two-step classification method may be applied as a supplementary part of a technical condition assessment system or decision support system for management of power transformers.
