Water constitutes an indispensable resource crucial for the sustenance of humanity, as it plays an integral role in various sectors such as agriculture, industrial processes, and domestic consumption. Even though water covers 71% of the global land surface, governments have been grappling with the challenge of ensuring the provision of safe water for domestic use. A contributing factor to this situation is the persistent contamination of available water sources rendering them unfit for human consumption. A common contaminant, pesticides are not frequently tested for despite their serious effects on biodiversity. Pesticide determination in water quality assessment is a challenging task because the procedures involved in the extraction and detection are complex. This reduces their popularity in many monitoring campaigns despite their harmful effects. If the existing methods of pesticide analysis are adapted by leveraging new technologies, then information concerning their presence in water ecosystems can be exposed. Furthermore, beyond the advantages conferred by the integration of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), the Internet of Things (IoT), Machine Learning (ML), and big data analytics, a notable outcome is the attainment of a heightened degree of granularity in the information of water ecosystems. This paper discusses methods of pesticide detection in water, emphasizing the possible use of electrochemical sensors, biosensors, and paper-based sensors in wireless sensing. It also explores the application of WSNs in water, the IoT, computing models, ML, and big data analytics, and their potential for integration as technologies useful for pesticide monitoring in water. The acquisition, processing, mining, and visualization of sensory data for knowledge discovery and decision support has recently been a popular area of research and exploration. Its usefulness is paramount because of its relationship to the continuous involvement in the improvement of healthcare and other related disciplines. As a result of this, a huge amount of data have been collected and analyzed. These data are made available for the research community in various shapes and formats; their representation and study in the form of graphs or networks is also an area of research which many scholars are focused on. However, the large size of such graph datasets poses challenges in data mining and visualization. For example, knowledge discovery from the Bio–Mouse–Gene dataset, which has over 43 thousand nodes and 14.5 million edges, is a non-trivial job. In this regard, summarizing the large graphs provided is a useful alternative. Graph summarization aims to provide the efficient analysis of such complex and large-sized data; hence, it is a beneficial approach. During summarization, all the nodes that have similar structural properties are merged together. In doing so, traditional methods often overlook the importance of personalizing the summary, which would be helpful in highlighting certain targeted nodes. Personalized or context-specific scenarios require a more tailored approach for accurately capturing distinct patterns and trends. Hence, the concept of personalized graph summarization aims to acquire a concise depiction of the graph, emphasizing connections that are closer in proximity to a specific set of given target nodes. In this paper, we present a faster algorithm for the personalized graph summarization (PGS) problem, named IPGS; this has been designed to facilitate enhanced and effective data mining and visualization of datasets from various domains, including biosensors. Our objective is to obtain a similar compression ratio as the one provided by the state-of-the-art PGS algorithm, but in a faster manner. To achieve this, we improve the execution time of the current state-of-the-art approach by using weighted, locality-sensitive hashing, through experiments on eight large publicly available datasets. The experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and scalability of IPGS while providing a similar compression ratio to the state-of-the-art approach. In this way, our research contributes to the study and analysis of sensory datasets through the perspective of graph summarization. In this paper, we present a laser triangulation sensor to measure the distance between the sensor and an object without contact using a diffraction slit rather than a traditional lens. We show that by replacing the lens with a slit, we can exploit the resulting diffraction pattern to have finer and yet simpler image analysis, yielding better estimation of the distance to the object. To test our hypothesis, we build a precision position table and a laser triangulation sensor, generate large data sets to test different estimation algorithms on various materials, and compare data acquisition using a traditional lens versus using a slit. In this paper, we present the development of a low-cost distributed computing pipeline for cotton plant phenotyping using Raspberry Pi, Hadoop, and deep learning. Specifically, we use a cluster of several Raspberry Pis in a primary-replica distributed architecture using the Apache Hadoop ecosystem and a pre-trained Tiny-YOLOv4 model for cotton bloom detection from our past work. We feed cotton image data collected from a research field in Tifton, GA, into our cluster's distributed file system for robust file access and distributed, parallel processing. We then submit job requests to our cluster from our client to process cotton image data in a distributed and parallel fashion, from pre-processing to bloom detection and spatio-temporal map creation. Additionally, we present a comparison of our four-node cluster performance with centralized, one-, two-, and three-node clusters. The number of data sources and models in the mobility and transport domain strongly proliferated in the last decade. Most formats have been created to enable specific and innovative applications. On the other hand, the available data models present a certain degree of complexity in terms of their integration and management due to partial overlaps, and in most cases, they could be exploited alternatively to implement the same smart and latest innovative solutions. This paper offers an overview of data models, standards and their relationships. A second contribution highlights any possible exploitation of data models for implementing operational processes for city transportation management and for the feeding of simulation and optimization processes that produce other data results in other data models. The final goal in most cases is the monitoring and control of city transport conditions, as well as the tactic and strategic planning of city infrastructure. Astronomy is entering an unprecedented era of big-data science, driven by missions like the ESA's Gaia telescope, which aims to map the Milky Way in three dimensions. Gaia's vast dataset presents a monumental challenge for traditional analysis methods. The sheer scale of this data exceeds the capabilities of manual exploration, necessitating the utilization of advanced computational techniques. In response to this challenge, we developed a novel approach leveraging deep learning to estimate the metallicity of fundamental mode (ab-type) RR Lyrae stars from their light curves in the Gaia optical G-band. Our study explores applying deep-learning techniques, particularly advanced neural-network architectures, in predicting photometric metallicity from time-series data. Our deep-learning models demonstrated notable predictive performance, with a low mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.0565, the root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.0765, and a high  R 2  regression performance of 0.9401, measured by cross-validation. The weighted mean absolute error (wMAE) is 0.0563, while the weighted root mean square error (wRMSE) is 0.0763. These results showcase the effectiveness of our approach in accurately estimating metallicity values. Our work underscores the importance of deep learning in astronomical research, particularly with large datasets from missions like Gaia. By harnessing the power of deep-learning methods, we can provide precision in analyzing vast datasets, contributing to more precise and comprehensive insights into complex astronomical phenomena. The analysis of large volumes of data collected from heterogeneous sources is increasingly important for the development of megacities, the advancement of smart city technologies, and ensuring a high quality of life for citizens. This study aimed to develop algorithms for analyzing and interpreting social media data to assess citizens' opinions in real time and for verifying and examining data to analyze social tension and predict the development of situations during the implementation of urban projects. The developed algorithms were tested using an urban project in the field of transportation system development. The study's material included data from social networks, messenger channels and chats, video hosting platforms, blogs, microblogs, forums, and review sites. An interdisciplinary approach was utilized to analyze the data, employing tools such as Brand Analytics, TextAnalyst 2.32, GPT-3.5, GPT-4, GPT-4o, and Tableau. The results of the data analysis showed identical outcomes, indicating a neutral perception among users and the absence of social tension surrounding the project's implementation, allowing for the prediction of a calm development of the situation. Internet of Things (IoT) applications and resources are highly vulnerable to flood attacks, including Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. These attacks overwhelm the targeted device with numerous network packets, making its resources inaccessible to authorized users. Such attacks may comprise attack references, attack types, sub-categories, host information, malicious scripts, etc. These details assist security professionals in identifying weaknesses, tailoring defense measures, and responding rapidly to possible threats, thereby improving the overall security posture of IoT devices. Developing an intelligent Intrusion Detection System (IDS) is highly complex due to its numerous network features. This study presents an improved IDS for IoT security that employs multimodal big data representation and transfer learning. First, the Packet Capture (PCAP) files are crawled to retrieve the necessary attacks and bytes. Second, Spark-based big data optimization algorithms handle huge volumes of data. Second, a transfer learning approach such as word2vec retrieves semantically-based observed features. Third, an algorithm is developed to convert network bytes into images, and texture features are extracted by configuring an attention-based Residual Network (ResNet). Finally, the trained text and texture features are combined and used as multimodal features to classify various attacks. The proposed method is thoroughly evaluated on three widely used IoT-based datasets: CIC-IoT 2022, CIC-IoT 2023, and Edge-IIoT. The proposed method achieves excellent classification performance, with an accuracy of 98.2%. In addition, we present a game theory-based process to validate the proposed approach formally. In hazardous environments like mining sites, mobile inspection robots play a crucial role in condition monitoring (CM) tasks, particularly by collecting various kinds of data, such as images. However, the sheer volume of collected image samples and existing noise pose challenges in processing and visualizing thermal anomalies. Recognizing these challenges, our study addresses the limitations of industrial big data analytics for mobile robot-generated image data. We present a novel, fully integrated approach involving a dimension reduction procedure. This includes a semantic segmentation technique utilizing the pre-trained VGG16 CNN architecture for feature selection, followed by random forest (RF) and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) classifiers for the prediction of the pixel class labels. We also explore unsupervised learning using the PCA-K-means method for dimension reduction and classification of unlabeled thermal defects based on anomaly severity. Our comprehensive methodology aims to efficiently handle image-based CM tasks in hazardous environments. To validate its practicality, we applied our approach in a real-world scenario, and the results confirm its robust performance in processing and visualizing thermal data collected by mobile inspection robots. Inspections of concrete bridges across the United States represent a significant commitment of resources, given their biannual mandate for many structures. With a notable number of aging bridges, there is an imperative need to enhance the efficiency of these inspections. This study harnessed the power of computer vision to streamline the inspection process. Our experiment examined the efficacy of a state-of-the-art Visual Transformer (ViT) model combined with distinct image enhancement detector algorithms. We benchmarked against a deep learning Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model. These models were applied to over 20,000 high-quality images from the Concrete Images for Classification dataset. Traditional crack detection methods often fall short due to their heavy reliance on time and resources. This research pioneers bridge inspection by integrating ViT with diverse image enhancement detectors, significantly improving concrete crack detection accuracy. Notably, a custom-built CNN achieves over 99% accuracy with substantially lower training time than ViT, making it an efficient solution for enhancing safety and resource conservation in infrastructure management. These advancements enhance safety by enabling reliable detection and timely maintenance, but they also align with Industry 4.0 objectives, automating manual inspections, reducing costs, and advancing technological integration in public infrastructure management. Fault-finding diagnostics is a model-driven approach that identifies a system's malfunctioning portion. It uses residual generators to identify faults, and various methods like isolation techniques and structural analysis are used. However, diagnostic equipment doesn't measure the remaining signal-to-noise ratio. Residual selection identifies fault-detecting generators. Fault detective diagnostic (FDD) approaches have been investigated and implemented for various industrial processes. However, industrial operations make it difficult to implement FDD techniques. To bridge the gap between theoretical methodologies and implementations, hybrid approaches and intelligent procedures are needed. Future research should focus on improving fault prognosis, allowing for accurate prediction of process failures and avoiding safety hazards. Beijing Satellite 3 is a high-performance optical remote sensing satellite with a spatial resolution of 0.3–0.5 m. It can provide timely and independent ultra-high-resolution spatial big data and comprehensive spatial information application services. At present, there is no relevant research on the fusion method of BJ-3A satellite images. In many applications, high-resolution panchromatic images alone are insufficient. Therefore, it is necessary to fuse them with multispectral images that contain spectral color information. Currently, there is a lack of research on the fusion method of BJ-3A satellite images. This article explores six traditional pixel-level fusion methods (HPF, HCS, wavelet, modified-IHS, PC, and Brovey) for fusing the panchromatic image and multispectral image of the BJ-3A satellite. The fusion results were analyzed qualitatively from two aspects: spatial detail enhancement capability and spectral fidelity. Five indicators, namely mean, standard deviation, entropy, correlation coefficient, and average gradient, were used for quantitative analysis. Finally, the fusion results were comprehensively evaluated from three aspects: spectral curves of ground objects, absolute error figure, and object-oriented classification effects. The findings of the research suggest that the fusion method known as HPF is the optimum and appropriate technique for fusing panchromatic and multispectral images obtained from BJ-3A. The spectrum situation awareness problem in space–air–ground integrated networks (SAGINs) is studied from a tensor-computing perspective. Tensor and tensor computing, including tensor decomposition, tensor completion and tensor eigenvalues, can satisfy the application requirements of SAGINs. Tensors can effectively handle multidimensional heterogeneous big data generated by SAGINs. Tensor computing is used to process the big data, with tensor decomposition being used for dimensionality reduction to reduce storage space, and tensor completion utilized for numeric supplementation to overcome the missing data problem. Notably, tensor eigenvalues are used to indicate the intrinsic correlations within the big data. A tensor data model is designed for space–air–ground integrated networks from multiple dimensions. Based on the multidimensional tensor data model, a novel tensor-computing-based spectrum situation awareness scheme is proposed. Two tensor eigenvalue calculation algorithms are studied to generate tensor eigenvalues. The distribution characteristics of tensor eigenvalues are used to design spectrum sensing schemes with hypothesis tests. The main advantage of this algorithm based on tensor eigenvalue distributions is that the statistics of spectrum situation awareness can be completely characterized by tensor eigenvalues. The feasibility of spectrum situation awareness based on tensor eigenvalues is evaluated by simulation results.
