As a fundamental element of the transportation system, traffic signs are widely used to guide traffic behaviors. In recent years, drones have emerged as an important tool for monitoring the conditions of traffic signs. However, the existing image processing technique is heavily reliant on image annotations. It is time consuming to build a high-quality dataset with diverse training images and human annotations. In this paper, we introduce the utilization of Vision–language Models (VLMs) in the traffic sign detection task. Without the need for discrete image labels, the rapid deployment is fulfilled by the multi-modal learning and large-scale pretrained networks. First, we compile a keyword dictionary to explain traffic signs. The Chinese national standard is used to suggest the shape and color information. Our program conducts Bootstrapping Language-image Pretraining v2 (BLIPv2) to translate representative images into text descriptions. Second, a Contrastive Language-image Pretraining (CLIP) framework is applied to characterize not only drone images but also text descriptions. Our method utilizes the pretrained encoder network to create visual features and word embeddings. Third, the category of each traffic sign is predicted according to the similarity between drone images and keywords. Cosine distance and softmax function are performed to calculate the class probability distribution. To evaluate the performance, we apply the proposed method in a practical application. The drone images captured from Guyuan, China, are employed to record the conditions of traffic signs. Further experiments include two widely used public datasets. Potholes and other road surface damages pose significant risks to vehicles and traffic safety. The current methods of in situ visual inspection for potholes or cracks are inefficient, costly, and hazardous. Therefore, there is a pressing need to develop automated systems for assessing road surface conditions, aiming to efficiently and accurately reconstruct, recognize, and locate potholes. In recent years, various methods utilizing (a) computer vision, (b) three-dimensional (3D) point clouds, or (c) smartphone data have been employed to map road surface quality conditions. Machine learning and deep learning techniques have increasingly enhanced the performance of these methods. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of cutting-edge computer vision and machine learning algorithms for pothole detection. It covers topics such as sensing systems for acquiring two-dimensional (2D) and 3D road data, classical algorithms based on 2D image processing, segmentation-based algorithms using 3D point cloud modeling, machine learning, deep learning algorithms, and hybrid approaches. The review highlights that hybrid methods combining traditional image processing and advanced machine learning techniques offer the highest accuracy in pothole detection. Machine learning approaches, particularly deep learning, demonstrate superior adaptability and detection rates, while traditional 2D and 3D methods provide valuable baseline techniques. By reviewing and evaluating existing vision-based methods, this paper clarifies the current landscape of pothole detection technologies and identifies opportunities for future research and development. Additionally, insights provided by this review can inform the design and implementation of more robust and effective systems for automated road surface condition assessment, thereby contributing to enhanced roadway safety and infrastructure management. In maritime transportation, a ship's draft survey serves as a primary method for weighing bulk cargo. The accuracy of the ship's draft reading determines the fairness of bulk cargo transactions. Human visual-based draft reading methods face issues such as safety concerns, high labor costs, and subjective interpretation. Therefore, some image processing methods are utilized to achieve automatic draft reading. However, due to the limitations in the spectral characteristics of RGB images, existing image processing methods are susceptible to water surface environmental interference, such as reflections. To solve this issue, we obtained and annotated 524 multispectral images of a ship's draft as the research dataset, marking the first application of integrating NIR information and RGB images for automatic draft reading tasks. Additionally, a dual-branch backbone named BIF is proposed to extract and combine spectral information from RGB and NIR images. The backbone network can be combined with the existing segmentation head and detection head to perform waterline segmentation and draft detection. By replacing the original ResNet-50 backbone of YOLOv8, we reached a mAP of 99.2% in the draft detection task. Similarly, combining UPerNet with our dual-branch backbone, the mIoU of the waterline segmentation task was improved from 98.9% to 99.3%. The number of maize leaves is an important indicator for assessing plant growth and regulating population structure. However, the traditional leaf counting method mainly relies on manual work, which is both time-consuming and straining, while the existing image processing methods have low accuracy and poor adaptability, making it difficult to meet the standards for practical application. To accurately detect the growth status of maize, an improved lightweight YOLOv8 maize leaf detection and counting method was proposed in this study. Firstly, the backbone of the YOLOv8 network is replaced using the StarNet network and the convolution and attention fusion module (CAFM) is introduced, which combines the local convolution and global attention mechanisms to enhance the ability of feature representation and fusion of information from different channels. Secondly, in the neck network part, the StarBlock module is used to improve the C2f module to capture more complex features while preserving the original feature information through jump connections to improve training stability and performance. Finally, a lightweight shared convolutional detection head (LSCD) is used to reduce repetitive computations and improve computational efficiency. The experimental results show that the precision, recall, and mAP50 of the improved model are 97.9%, 95.5%, and 97.5%, and the numbers of model parameters and model size are 1.8 M and 3.8 MB, which are reduced by 40.86% and 39.68% compared to YOLOv8. This study shows that the model improves the accuracy of maize leaf detection, assists breeders in making scientific decisions, provides a reference for the deployment and application of maize leaf number mobile end detection devices, and provides technical support for the high-quality assessment of maize growth. The detection of impact and depth defects in Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) composites has been extensively studied to develop effective, reliable, and cost-efficient assessment methods through various Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques. Challenges in detecting these defects arise from varying responses based on the geometrical shape, thickness, and defect types. Long Pulse Thermography (LPT), utilizing an uncooled microbolometer and a low-resolution infrared (IR) camera, presents a promising solution for detecting both depth and impact defects in GFRP materials with a single setup and minimal tools at an economical cost. Despite its potential, the application of LPT has been limited due to susceptibility to noise from environmental radiation and reflections, leading to blurry images. This study focuses on optimizing LPT parameters to achieve accurate defect detection. Specifically, we investigated 11 flat-bottom hole (FBH) depth defects and impact defects ranging from 8 J to 15 J in GFRP materials. The key parameters examined include the environmental temperature, background reflection, background color reflection, and surface emissivity. Additionally, we employed image processing techniques to classify composite defects and automatically highlight defective areas. The Tanimoto Criterion (TC) was used to evaluate the accuracy of LPT both for raw images and post-processed images. The results demonstrate that through parameter optimization, the depth defects in GFRP materials were successfully detected. The TC success rate reached 0.91 for detecting FBH depth defects in raw images, which improved significantly after post-processing using Canny edge detection and Hough circle detection algorithms. Over recent decades, natural and artificial colloids, as well as nanoparticles, have been increasingly used in various applications. Consequently, with this rising consumption, surface and subsurface environments are more exposed to these particles. The presence of these particles and the colloid-facilitated transport of microorganisms, the interactions between dissolved contaminants and mobile colloids in porous media, and the fate and transport of colloids through groundwater—one of the primary sources of water supply for human societies—have attracted extensive research. This study investigates the performance of several image processing methods in the field of colloid detection, which is a prerequisite for the subsequent steps in porous media research. We employed four different categories of image processing approaches on microscopy images—segmentation-based methods, background-detection-based methods, filter-based methods, and morphology-based methods—to conduct the detection process of colloids. Eight methods were applied and subsequently analyzed in terms of their drawbacks and advantages to determine the best ones in this domain. Finally, we proposed an ensemble approach that leverages the strengths of the three best methods using a majority vote to detect colloids more accurately. In experiments, Precision, Recall, F-measure, and TCR criteria were considered as evaluation tools. Experimental results demonstrate the high accuracy of image processing methods in recognizing colloids. Among all these methods, morphology-based methods were the most successful, achieving the best detection performance and improving the limited distinguishing features of small colloids. Railway transportation has been integrated into people's lives. According to the "Notice on the release of the General Technical Specification of High-speed Railway Power Supply Safety Testing (6C System) System" issued by the National Railway Administration of China in 2012, it is required to install pantograph and slide monitoring devices in high-speed railway stations, station throats and the inlet and exit lines of high-speed railway sections, and it is required to detect the damage of the slider with high precision. It can be seen that the good condition of the pantograph slider is very important for the normal operation of the railway system. As a part of providing power for high-speed rail and subway, the pantograph must be paid attention to in railway transportation to ensure its integrity. The wear of the pantograph is mainly due to the contact power supply between the slide block and the long wire during high-speed operation, which inevitably produces scratches, resulting in depressions on the upper surface of the pantograph slide block. During long-term use, because the depression is too deep, there is a risk of fracture. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the slider regularly and replace the slider with serious wear. At present, most of the traditional methods use automation technology or simple computer vision technology for detection, which is inefficient. Therefore, this paper introduces computer vision and deep learning technology into pantograph slide wear detection. Specifically, this paper mainly studies the wear detection of the pantograph slider based on deep learning and the main purpose is to improve the detection accuracy and improve the effect of segmentation. From a methodological perspective, this paper employs a linear array camera to enhance the quality of the data sets. Additionally, it integrates an attention mechanism to improve segmentation performance. To enhance the synchronous detection of the horizontal and vertical positions of the torch in swing arc narrow gap welding, a torch pose detection (TPD) method is proposed. This approach utilizes passive visual sensing to capture images of the arc on the groove sidewall, using advanced image processing methods to extract and fit the arc contour. The coordinates of the arc contour center point and the highest point are determined through the arc contour fitting line. The torch center position is calculated from the average horizontal coordinates of the arc contour centers in adjacent welding images, while the height position is determined from the vertical coordinate of the arc's highest point. Experimental validation in both variable and constant groove welding conditions demonstrated the TPD method's accuracy within 0.32 mm for detecting the torch center position. This method eliminates the need to construct the wire centerline, which was a requirement in previous approaches, thereby reducing the impact of wire straightness on detection accuracy. The proposed TPD method successfully achieves simultaneous detection of the torch center and height positions, laying the foundation for intelligent detection and adaptive control in swing arc narrow gap welding. The present study deals with image enhancement, which is a very common problem in image processing. This issue has been addressed in multiple works with different methods, most with the sole purpose of improving the perceived quality. Our goal is to propose an approach with a strong physical justification that can model the human visual system. This is why the Logarithmic Image Processing (LIP) framework was chosen. Within this model, initially dedicated to images acquired in transmission, it is possible to introduce the novel concept of negative grey levels, interpreted as light intensifiers. Such an approach permits the extension of the dynamic range of a low-light image to the full grey scale in "real-time", which means at camera speed. In addition, this method is easily generalizable to colour images and is reversible, i.e., bijective in the mathematical sense, and can be applied to images acquired in reflection thanks to the consistency of the LIP framework with human vision. The exploitation of insects as protein sources in the food industry has had a strong impact in recent decades for many reasons. The emphasis for this phenomenon has its primary basis on sustainability and also to the nutritional value provided. The gender of the insects, specifically Acheta domesticus, is strictly related to their nutritional value and therefore the availability of an automatic system capable of counting the number of Acheta in an insect farm based on their gender will have a strong impact on the sustainability of the farm itself. This paper presents a non-contact measurement system designed for gender counting and recognition in Acheta domesticus farms. A specific test bench was designed and realized to force the crickets to travel inside a transparent duct, across which they were framed by means of a high-resolution camera able to capture the ovipositor, the distinction element between male and female. All possible sources of uncertainty affecting the identification and counting of individuals were considered, and methods to mitigate their effect were described. In the field of endoscopic imaging, challenges such as low resolution, complex textures, and blurred edges often degrade the quality of 3D reconstructed models. To address these issues, this study introduces an innovative endoscopic image super-resolution and 3D reconstruction technique named Omni-Directional Focus and Scale Resolution (OmDF-SR). This method integrates an Omnidirectional Self-Attention (OSA) mechanism, an Omnidirectional Scale Aggregation Group (OSAG), a Dual-stream Adaptive Focus Mechanism (DAFM), and a Dynamic Edge Adjustment Framework (DEAF) to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of super-resolution processing. Additionally, it employs Structure from Motion (SfM) and Multi-View Stereo (MVS) technologies to achieve high-precision medical 3D models. Experimental results indicate significant improvements in image processing with a PSNR of 38.2902 dB and an SSIM of 0.9746 at a magnification factor of ×2, and a PSNR of 32.1723 dB and an SSIM of 0.9489 at ×4. Furthermore, the method excels in reconstructing detailed 3D models, enhancing point cloud density, mesh quality, and texture mapping richness, thus providing substantial support for clinical diagnosis and surgical planning. In strawberry cultivation, precise disease management is crucial for maximizing yields and reducing unnecessary fungicide use. Traditional methods for measuring leaf wetness duration (LWD), a critical factor in assessing the risk of fungal diseases such as botrytis fruit rot and anthracnose, have been reliant on sensors with known limitations in accuracy and reliability and difficulties with calibrating. To overcome these limitations, this study introduced an innovative algorithm for leaf wetness detection systems employing high-resolution imaging and deep learning technologies, including convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Implemented at the University of Florida's Plant Science Research and Education Unit (PSREU) in Citra, FL, USA, and expanded to three additional locations across Florida, USA, the system captured and analyzed images of a reference plate to accurately determine the wetness and, consequently, the LWD. The comparison of system outputs with manual observations across diverse environmental conditions demonstrated the enhanced accuracy and reliability of the artificial intelligence-driven approach. By integrating this system into the Strawberry Advisory System (SAS), this study provided an efficient solution to improve disease risk assessment and fungicide application strategies, promising significant economic benefits and sustainability advances in strawberry production. Recent research has made significant progress in automated unmanned systems utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based image processing to optimize the rebar manufacturing process and minimize defects such as twisting during production. Despite various studies, including those employing data augmentation through Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), the performance of rebar twist prediction has been limited due to image quality degradation caused by environmental noise, such as insufficient image quality and inconsistent lighting conditions in rebar processing environments. To address these challenges, we propose a novel approach for real-time rebar twist prediction in manufacturing processes. Our method involves restoring low-quality grayscale images to high resolution and employing an object detection model to identify and track rebar endpoints. We then apply regression analysis to the coordinates obtained from the bounding boxes to estimate the error rate of the rebar endpoint positions, thereby determining the occurrence of twisting. To achieve this, we first developed a Unified-Channel Attention (UCA) module that is robust to changes in intensity and contrast for grayscale images. The UCA can be integrated into image restoration models to more accurately detect rebar endpoint characteristics in object detection models. Furthermore, we introduce a method for predicting the future positions of rebar endpoints using various linear and non-linear regression models. The predicted positions are used to calculate the error rate in rebar endpoint locations, determined by the distance between the actual and predicted positions, which is then used to classify the presence of rebar twisting. Our experimental results demonstrate that integrating the UCA module with our image restoration model significantly improved existing models in Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM) metrics. Moreover, employing regression models to predict future rebar endpoint positions enhances the F1 score for twist prediction. Vehicle pose detection plays a vital role in modern automotive technology, which can improve driving safety, enhance vehicle stability and provide important support for the development of autonomous driving technology. The current pose estimation methods have the problems of accumulation errors, large algorithm computing power, and expensive cost, so they cannot be widely used in intelligent connected vehicles. This paper proposes a vehicle pose detection method based on an RSU (Roadside Unit). First, the on-board GPS performs the positioning of the target vehicle and transmits the positioning information to the RSU through the UDP (User Data Protocol). Next, the RSU transmits a forward command to the OBU (On-board Unit) through the UDP. The OBU sends the command to the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) to control the vehicle forward. Then, the RSU detects and tracks the vehicle. The RSU takes pictures of two images before and after the movement and obtains the coordinates of the four angle points and the center point by image processing. The vehicle heading direction is determined by the moving direction of the center point of the front and rear two images. Finally, the RSU captures the vehicle images in real time, performs the process of tracking, rectangular fitting and pose calculation to obtain the pose information and transmits the information to the OBU to complete the whole process of vehicle pose detection and information transmission. Experiments show that the method can realize accurate and efficient detection of vehicle pose, meet the real-time requirements of vehicle pose detection, and can be widely used in intelligent vehicles. This paper proposes a full-automatic high-efficiency Mueller matrix microscopic imaging (MMMI) system based on the tissue microarray (TMA) for cancer inspection for the first time. By performing a polar decomposition on the sample's Mueller matrix (MM) obtained by a transmissive MMMI system we established, the linear phase retardance equivalent waveplate fast-axis azimuth and the linear phase retardance are obtained for distinguishing the cancerous tissues from the normal ones based on the differences in their polarization characteristics, where three analyses methods including statistical analysis, the gray-level co-occurrence matrix analysis (GLCM) and the Tamura image processing method (TIPM) are used. Previous MMMI medical diagnostics typically utilized discrete slices for inspection under a high-magnification objective (20×–50×) with a small field of view, while we use the TMA under a low-magnification objective (5×) with a large field of view. Experimental results indicate that MMMI based on TMA can effectively analyze the pathological variations in biological tissues, inspect cancerous cervical tissues, and thus contribute to the diagnosis of postoperative cancer biopsies. During underwater image processing, image quality is affected by the absorption and scattering of light in water, thus causing problems such as blurring and noise. As a result, poor image quality is unavoidable. To achieve overall satisfying research results, underwater image denoising is vital. This paper presents an underwater image denoising method, named HHDNet, designed to address noise issues arising from environmental interference and technical limitations during underwater robot photography. The method leverages a dual-branch network architecture to handle both high and low frequencies, incorporating a hybrid attention module specifically designed for the removal of high-frequency abrupt noise in underwater images. Input images are decomposed into high-frequency and low-frequency components using a Gaussian kernel. For the high-frequency part, a Global Context Extractor (GCE) module with a hybrid attention mechanism focuses on removing high-frequency abrupt signals by capturing local details and global dependencies simultaneously. For the low-frequency part, efficient residual convolutional units are used in consideration of less noise information. Experimental results demonstrate that HHDNet effectively achieves underwater image denoising tasks, surpassing other existing methods not only in denoising effectiveness but also in maintaining computational efficiency, and thus HHDNet provides more flexibility in underwater image noise removal. Snake robots, also known as apodal robots, are among the most common and versatile modular robots. Primarily due to their ability to move in different patterns, they can evolve in scenarios with several constraints, some of them hardly accessible to other robot configurations. This paper deals with a specific environment constraint where the robot needs to climb a prismatic obstacle, similar to a step. The objective is to carry out simulations of this function, before implementing it in the physical model. To this end, we propose two different algorithms, parameterized by the obstacle dimensions determined by image processing, and both are evaluated in simulated experiments. The types of obstacles encountered in the road environment are complex and diverse, and accurate and reliable detection of obstacles is the key to improving traffic safety. Traditional obstacle detection methods are limited by the type of samples and therefore cannot detect others comprehensively. Therefore, this paper proposes an obstacle detection method based on longitudinal active vision. The obstacles are recognized according to the height difference characteristics between the obstacle imaging points and the ground points in the image, and the obstacle detection in the target area is realized without accurately distinguishing the obstacle categories, which reduces the spatial and temporal complexity of the road environment perception. The method of this paper is compared and analyzed with the obstacle detection methods based on VIDAR (vision-IMU based detection and range method), VIDAR + MSER, and YOLOv8s. The experimental results show that the method in this paper has high detection accuracy and verifies the feasibility of obstacle detection in road environments where unknown obstacles exist. In clinical conditions limited by equipment, attaining lightweight skin lesion segmentation is pivotal as it facilitates the integration of the model into diverse medical devices, thereby enhancing operational efficiency. However, the lightweight design of the model may face accuracy degradation, especially when dealing with complex images such as skin lesion images with irregular regions, blurred boundaries, and oversized boundaries. To address these challenges, we propose an efficient lightweight attention network (ELANet) for the skin lesion segmentation task. In ELANet, two different attention mechanisms of the bilateral residual module (BRM) can achieve complementary information, which enhances the sensitivity to features in spatial and channel dimensions, respectively, and then multiple BRMs are stacked for efficient feature extraction of the input information. In addition, the network acquires global information and improves segmentation accuracy by putting feature maps of different scales through multi-scale attention fusion (MAF) operations. Finally, we evaluate the performance of ELANet on three publicly available datasets, ISIC2016, ISIC2017, and ISIC2018, and the experimental results show that our algorithm can achieve 89.87%, 81.85%, and 82.87% of the mIoU on the three datasets with a parametric of 0.459 M, which is an excellent balance between accuracy and lightness and is superior to many existing segmentation methods. Similar to convolutional neural networks for image processing, existing analysis methods for 3D point clouds often require the designation of a local neighborhood to describe the local features of the point cloud. This local neighborhood is typically manually specified, which makes it impossible for the network to dynamically adjust the receptive field's range. If the range is too large, it tends to overlook local details, and if it is too small, it cannot establish global dependencies. To address this issue, we introduce in this paper a new concept: receptive field space (RFS). With a minor computational cost, we extract features from multiple consecutive receptive field ranges to form this new receptive field space. On this basis, we further propose a receptive field space attention mechanism, enabling the network to adaptively select the most effective receptive field range from RFS, thus equipping the network with the ability to adjust granularity adaptively. Our approach achieved state-of-the-art performance in both point cloud classification, with an overall accuracy (OA) of 94.2%, and part segmentation, achieving an mIoU of 86.0%, demonstrating the effectiveness of our method. In modern scientific practice, it is necessary to consistently observe predetermined zones, with the expectation of detecting and identifying emerging targets or events inside such areas. This research presents an innovative imaging spectrometer system for the continuous monitoring of specific areas. This study begins by providing detailed information on the features and optical structure of the constructed instrument. This is then followed by simulations using optical design tools. The device has an F-number of 5, a focal length of 100 mm, a field of view of 3 × 7, and a wavelength range spanning from 400 nm to 600 nm. The optical path diagram demonstrates that the system's dispersion and imaging pictures can be distinguished, hence fulfilling the system's specifications. Furthermore, the utilization of a Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) graph has substantiated that the image quality indeed satisfies the specified criteria. To evaluate the instrument's performance in the spectrum observation of fixed regions, a region-monitoring-type slitless imaging spectrometer was built. The equipment has the capability to identify a specific region and rapidly capture the spectra of objects or events that are present inside that region. The spectral data were collected effectively by the implementation of image processing techniques on the captured photos. The correlation coefficient between these data and the reference data was 0.9226, showing that the device successfully measured the target's spectrum. Therefore, the instrument that was created successfully demonstrated its ability to capture images of the observed areas and collect spectral data from the targets located within those regions. The industrial manufacturing model is undergoing a transformation from a product-centric model to a customer-centric one. Driven by customized requirements, the complexity of products and the requirements for quality have increased, which pose a challenge to the applicability of traditional machine vision technology. Extensive research demonstrates the effectiveness of AI-based learning and image processing on specific objects or tasks, but few publications focus on the composite task of the integrated product, the traceability and improvability of methods, as well as the extraction and communication of knowledge between different scenarios or tasks. To address this problem, this paper proposes a common, knowledge-driven, generic vision inspection framework, targeted for standardizing product inspection into a process of information decoupling and adaptive metrics. Task-related object perception is planned into a multi-granularity and multi-pattern progressive alignment based on industry knowledge and structured tasks. Inspection is abstracted as a reconfigurable process of multi-sub-pattern space combination mapping and difference metric under appropriate high-level strategies and experiences. Finally, strategies for knowledge improvement and accumulation based on historical data are presented. The experiment demonstrates the process of generating a detection pipeline for complex products and continuously improving it through failure tracing and knowledge improvement. Compared to the ( 1.767 ° , 69.802 mm) and 0.883 obtained by state-of-the-art deep learning methods, the generated pipeline achieves a pose estimation ranging from ( 2.771 ° , 153.584 mm) to ( 1.034 ° , 52.308 mm) and a detection rate ranging from 0.462 to 0.927. The traditional methods for 3D reconstruction mainly involve using image processing techniques or deep learning segmentation models for rib extraction. After post-processing, voxel-based rib reconstruction is achieved. However, these methods suffer from limited reconstruction accuracy and low computational efficiency. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes a 3D rib reconstruction method based on point cloud adaptive smoothing and denoising. We converted voxel data from CT images to multi-attribute point cloud data. Then, we applied point cloud adaptive smoothing and denoising methods to eliminate noise and non-rib points in the point cloud. Additionally, efficient 3D reconstruction and post-processing techniques were employed to achieve high-accuracy and comprehensive 3D rib reconstruction results. Experimental calculations demonstrated that compared to voxel-based 3D rib reconstruction methods, the 3D rib models generated by the proposed method achieved a 40% improvement in reconstruction accuracy and were twice as efficient as the former. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) stand out as remarkable materials renowned for their exceptionally high surface area and large number of pores, making them invaluable for diverse sensing applications including gas, biomedical, chemical, and optical sensing. In the autonomous driving industry, there is a growing trend to employ long-wave infrared (LWIR)-based uncooled thermal-imaging cameras, capable of robustly collecting data even in extreme environments. Consequently, both industry and academia are actively researching contrast-enhancement techniques to improve the quality of LWIR-based thermal-imaging cameras. However, most research results only showcase experimental outcomes using mass-produced products that already incorporate contrast-enhancement techniques. Put differently, there is a lack of experimental data on contrast enhancement post-non-uniformity (NUC) and temperature compensation (TC) processes, which generate the images seen in the final products. To bridge this gap, we propose a histogram equalization (HE)-based contrast enhancement method that incorporates a region-based clipping technique. Furthermore, we present experimental results on the images obtained after applying NUC and TC processes. We simultaneously conducted visual and qualitative performance evaluations on images acquired after NUC and TC processes. In the visual evaluation, it was confirmed that the proposed method improves image clarity and contrast ratio compared to conventional HE-based methods, even in challenging driving scenarios such as tunnels. In the qualitative evaluation, the proposed method demonstrated upper-middle-class rankings in both image quality and processing speed metrics. Therefore, our proposed method proves to be effective for the essential contrast enhancement process in LWIR-based uncooled thermal-imaging cameras intended for autonomous driving platforms. Human pose estimation (HPE) is a technique used in computer vision and artificial intelligence to detect and track human body parts and poses using images or videos. Widely used in augmented reality, animation, fitness applications, and surveillance, HPE methods that employ monocular cameras are highly versatile and applicable to standard videos and CCTV footage. These methods have evolved from two-dimensional (2D) to three-dimensional (3D) pose estimation. However, in real-world environments, current 3D HPE methods trained on laboratory-based motion capture data encounter challenges, such as limited training data, depth ambiguity, left/right switching, and issues with occlusions. In this study, four 3D HPE methods were compared based on their strengths and weaknesses using real-world videos. Joint position correction techniques were proposed to eliminate and correct anomalies such as left/right inversion and false detections of joint positions in daily life motions. Joint angle trajectories were obtained for intuitive and informative human activity recognition using an optimization method based on a 3D humanoid simulator, with the joint position corrected by the proposed technique as the input. In this paper, we describe a measurement procedure to fully characterise a novel vibration energy harvester operating in the ultra-low-frequency range. The procedure, which is more thorough than those usually found in the literature, comprises three main stages: modelling, experimental characterisation and parameter identification. Modelling is accomplished in two alternative ways, a physical model (white box) and a mixed one (black box), which model the magnetic interaction via Fourier series. The experimental measurements include not only the input (acceleration)–output (energy) response but also the (internal) dynamic behaviour of the system, making use of a synchronised image processing and signal acquisition system. The identification procedure, based on maximum likelihood, estimates all the relevant parameters to characterise the system to simulate its behaviour and helps to optimise its performance. The visual measurement of deep holes in composite material workpieces constitutes a critical step in the robotic assembly of aerospace components. The positioning accuracy of assembly holes significantly impacts the assembly quality of components. However, the complex texture of the composite material surface and mutual interference between the imaging of the inlet and outlet edges of deep holes significantly challenge hole detection. A visual measurement method for deep holes in composite materials based on the radial penalty Laplacian operator is proposed to address the issues by suppressing visual noise and enhancing the features of hole edges. Coupled with a novel inflection-point-removal algorithm, this approach enables the accurate detection of holes with a diameter of 10 mm and a depth of 50 mm in composite material components, achieving a measurement precision of 0.03 mm. Building occupancy information is significant for a variety of reasons, from allocation of resources in smart buildings to responding during emergency situations. As most people spend more than 90% of their time indoors, a comfortable indoor environment is crucial. To ensure comfort, traditional HVAC systems condition rooms assuming maximum occupancy, accounting for more than 50% of buildings' energy budgets in the US. Occupancy level is a key factor in ensuring energy efficiency, as occupancy-controlled HVAC systems can reduce energy waste by conditioning rooms based on actual usage. Numerous studies have focused on developing occupancy estimation models leveraging existing sensors, with camera-based methods gaining popularity due to their high precision and widespread availability. However, the main concern with using cameras for occupancy estimation is the potential violation of occupants' privacy. Unlike previous video-/image-based occupancy estimation methods, we addressed the issue of occupants' privacy in this work by proposing and investigating both motion-based and motion-independent occupancy counting methods on intentionally blurred video frames. Our proposed approach included the development of a motion-based technique that inherently preserves privacy, as well as motion-independent techniques such as detection-based and density-estimation-based methods. To improve the accuracy of the motion-independent approaches, we utilized deblurring methods: an iterative statistical technique and a deep-learning-based method. Furthermore, we conducted an analysis of the privacy implications of our motion-independent occupancy counting system by comparing the original, blurred, and deblurred frames using different image quality assessment metrics. This analysis provided insights into the trade-off between occupancy estimation accuracy and the preservation of occupants' visual privacy. The combination of iterative statistical deblurring and density estimation achieved a 16.29% counting error, outperforming our other proposed approaches while preserving occupants' visual privacy to a certain extent. Our multifaceted approach aims to contribute to the field of occupancy estimation by proposing a solution that seeks to balance the trade-off between accuracy and privacy. In recent years, with the increasing demand for high-quality images in various fields, more and more attention has been focused on noise removal techniques for image processing. The effective elimination of unwanted noise plays a crucial role in improving image quality. To meet this challenge, many noise removal methods have been proposed, among which the diffusion model has become one of the focuses of many researchers. In order to make the restored image closer to the real image and retain more features of the image, this paper proposes a DIR-SDE method with reference to the diffusion models of IR-SDE and IDM, which improve the feature retention of the image in the de-raining process, and then improve the realism of the image for the image de-raining task. In this study, IR-SDE was used as the base structure of the diffusion model, IR-SDE was improved, and DINO-ViT was combined to enhance the image features. During the diffusion process, the image features were extracted using DINO-ViT, and these features were fused with the original images to enhance the learning effect of the model. The model was also trained and validated with the Rain100H dataset. Compared with the IR-SDE method, it improved 0.003 in the SSIM, 0.003 in the LPIPS, and 1.23 in the FID. Minor bodies exhibit considerable variability in shape and surface morphology, posing challenges for spacecraft operations, which are further compounded by highly non-linear dynamics and limited communication windows with Earth. Additionally, uncertainties persist in the shape and surface morphology of minor bodies due to errors in ground-based estimation techniques. The growing need for autonomy underscores the importance of robust image processing and visual-based navigation methods. To address this demand, it is essential to conduct tests on a variety of body shapes and with different surface morphological features. This work introduces the procedural Minor bOdy geNErator Tool (MONET), implemented using an open-source 3D computer graphics software. The starting point of MONET is the three-dimensional mesh of a generic minor body, which is procedurally modified by introducing craters, boulders, and surface roughness, resulting in a photorealistic model. MONET offers the flexibility to generate a diverse range of shapes and surface morphological features, aiding in the recreation of various minor bodies. Users can fine-tune relevant parameters to create the desired conditions based on the specific application requirements. The tool offers the capability to generate two default families of models: rubble-pile, characterized by numerous different-sized boulders, and comet-like, reflecting the typical morphology of comets. This paper proposes a new method for recognizing, extracting, and processing Phase-Resolved Partial Discharge (PRPD) patterns from two-dimensional plots to identify specific defect types affecting electrical equipment without human intervention while retaining the principals that make PRPD analysis an effective diagnostic technique. The proposed method does not rely on training complex deep learning algorithms which demand substantial computational resources and extensive datasets that can pose significant hurdles for the application of on-line partial discharge monitoring. Instead, the developed Cosine Cluster Net (CCNet) model, which is an image processing pipeline, can extract and process patterns from any two-dimensional PRPD plot before employing the cosine similarity function to measure the likeness of the patterns to predefined templates of known defect types. The PRPD pattern recognition capabilities of the model were tested using several manually classified PRPD images available in the existing literature. The model consistently produced similarity scores that identified the same defect type as the one from the manual classification. With the development of deep learning, the Super-Resolution (SR) reconstruction of microscopic images has improved significantly. However, the scarcity of microscopic images for training, the underutilization of hierarchical features in original Low-Resolution (LR) images, and the high-frequency noise unrelated with the image structure generated during the reconstruction process are still challenges in the Single Image Super-Resolution (SISR) field. Faced with these issues, we first collected sufficient microscopic images through Motic, a company engaged in the design and production of optical and digital microscopes, to establish a dataset. Secondly, we proposed a Residual Dense Attention Generative Adversarial Network (RDAGAN). The network comprises a generator, an image discriminator, and a feature discriminator. The generator includes a Residual Dense Block (RDB) and a Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM), focusing on extracting the hierarchical features of the original LR image. Simultaneously, the added feature discriminator enables the network to generate high-frequency features pertinent to the image's structure. Finally, we conducted experimental analysis and compared our model with six classic models. Compared with the best model, our model improved PSNR and SSIM by about 1.5 dB and 0.2, respectively. In this study, an innovative laser 3D-scanning technology is proposed to scan pipe inner walls in order to solve the problems of the exorbitant expenses and operational complexities of the current equipment for the 3D data acquisition of the pipe inner wall, and the difficulty of both the efficiency and accuracy of traditional light stripe-center extraction methods. The core of this technology is the monocular-structured light 3D scanner, the image processing strategy based on tracking speckles, and the improved gray barycenter method. The experimental results demonstrate a 52% reduction in the average standard error of the improved gray barycenter method when compared to the traditional gray barycenter method, along with an 83% decrease in the operation time when compared to the Steger method. In addition, the size data of the inner wall of the pipe obtained using this technology is accurate, and the average deviation of the inner diameter and length of the pipe is less than 0.13 mm and 0.41 mm, respectively. Aiming at the problems of incomplete dehazing, color distortion, and loss of detail and edge information encountered by existing algorithms when processing images of underground coal mines, an image dehazing algorithm for underground coal mines, named CAB CA DSConv Fusion gUNet (CCDF-gUNet), is proposed. First, Dynamic Snake Convolution (DSConv) is introduced to replace traditional convolutions, enhancing the feature extraction capability. Second, residual attention convolution blocks are constructed to simultaneously focus on both local and global information in images. Additionally, the Coordinate Attention (CA) module is utilized to learn the coordinate information of features so that the model can better capture the key information in images. Furthermore, to simultaneously focus on the detail and structural consistency of images, a fusion loss function is introduced. Finally, based on the test verification of the public dataset Haze-4K, the Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR), Structural Similarity (SSIM), and Mean Squared Error (MSE) are 30.72 dB, 0.976, and 55.04, respectively, and on a self-made underground coal mine dataset, they are 31.18 dB, 0.971, and 49.66, respectively. The experimental results show that the algorithm performs well in dehazing, effectively avoids color distortion, and retains image details and edge information, providing some theoretical references for image processing in coal mine surveillance videos. The aim of this article is to introduce a novel approach to identifying flow regimes and void fractions in microchannel flow boiling, which is based on binary image segmentation using digital image processing and deep learning. The proposed image processing pipeline uses adaptive thresholding, blurring, gamma correction, contour detection, and histogram comparison to separate vapor from liquid areas, while the deep learning method uses a customized version of a convolutional neural network (CNN) called U-net to extract meaningful features from video frames. Both approaches enabled the automatic detection of flow boiling conditions, such as bubbly, slug, and annular flow, as well as automatic void fraction calculation. Especially CNN demonstrated its ability to deliver fast and dependable results, presenting an appealing substitute to manual feature extraction. The U-net-based CNN was able to segment flow boiling images with a Dice score of 99.1% and classify the above flow regimes with an overall classification accuracy of 91%. The process of image fusion is the process of enriching an image and improving the image's quality, so as to facilitate the subsequent image processing and analysis. With the increasing importance of image fusion technology, the fusion of infrared and visible images has received extensive attention. In today's deep learning environment, deep learning is widely used in the field of image fusion. However, in some applications, it is not possible to obtain a large amount of training data. Because some special organs of snakes can receive and process infrared information and visible information, the fusion method of infrared and visible light to simulate the visual mechanism of snakes came into being. Therefore, this paper takes into account the perspective of visual bionics to achieve image fusion; such methods do not need to obtain a significant amount of training data. However, most of the fusion methods for simulating snakes face the problem of unclear details, so this paper combines this method with a pulse coupled neural network (PCNN). By studying two receptive field models of retinal nerve cells, six dual-mode cell imaging mechanisms of rattlesnakes and their mathematical models and the PCNN model, an improved fusion method of infrared and visible images was proposed. For the proposed fusion method, eleven groups of source images were used, and three non-reference image quality evaluation indexes were compared with seven other fusion methods. The performance of the tire has a very important impact on the safe driving of the car, and in the actual use of the tire, due to complex road conditions or use conditions, it will inevitably cause immeasurable wear, scratches and other damage. This paper presents an experimental evaluation of a wearable light-emitting diode (LED) transmitter in an optical camera communications (OCC) system. The evaluation is conducted under conditions of controlled user movement during indoor physical exercise, encompassing both mild and intense exercise scenarios. We introduce an image processing algorithm designed to identify a template signal transmitted by the LED and detected within the image. To enhance this process, we utilize the dynamics of controlled exercise-induced motion to limit the tracking process to a smaller region within the image. We demonstrate the feasibility of detecting the transmitting source within the frames, and thus limit the tracking process to a smaller region within the image, achieving an reduction of 87.3% for mild exercise and 79.0% for intense exercise. Artificial retinas have revolutionized the lives of many blind people by enabling their ability to perceive vision via an implanted chip. Despite significant advancements, there are some limitations that cannot be ignored. Presenting all objects captured in a scene makes their identification difficult. Addressing this limitation is necessary because the artificial retina can utilize a very limited number of pixels to represent vision information. This problem in a multi-object scenario can be mitigated by enhancing images such that only the major objects are considered to be shown in vision. Although simple techniques like edge detection are used, they fall short in representing identifiable objects in complex scenarios, suggesting the idea of integrating primary object edges. To support this idea, the proposed classification model aims at identifying the primary objects based on a suggested set of selective features. The proposed classification model can then be equipped into the artificial retina system for filtering multiple primary objects to enhance vision. The suitability of handling multi-objects enables the system to cope with real-world complex scenarios. The proposed classification model is based on a multi-label deep neural network, specifically designed to leverage from the selective feature set. Initially, the enhanced images proposed in this research are compared with the ones that utilize an edge detection technique for single, dual, and multi-object images. These enhancements are also verified through an intensity profile analysis. Subsequently, the proposed classification model's performance is evaluated to show the significance of utilizing the suggested features. This includes evaluating the model's ability to correctly classify the top five, four, three, two, and one object(s), with respective accuracies of up to 84.8%, 85.2%, 86.8%, 91.8%, and 96.4%. Several comparisons such as training/validation loss and accuracies, precision, recall, specificity, and area under a curve indicate reliable results. Based on the overall evaluation of this study, it is concluded that using the suggested set of selective features not only improves the classification model's performance, but aligns with the specific problem to address the challenge of correctly identifying objects in multi-object scenarios. Fingerprint recognition systems have achieved widespread integration into various technological devices, including cell phones, computers, door locks, and time attendance machines. Nevertheless, individuals with worn fingerprints encounter challenges when attempting to unlock original fingerprint systems, which results in disruptions to their daily activities. This study explores two distinct methods for fingerprint backup: traditional fingerprint impression and 3D printing technologies. Unlocking tests were conducted on commonly available optical fingerprint lock-equipped cell phones to assess the efficacy of these methods, particularly in unlocking with worn fingerprints. The research findings indicated that the traditional fingerprint impression method exhibited high fidelity in reproducing fingerprint patterns, achieving an impressive unlocking success rate of 97.8% for imprinting unworn fingerprints. However, when dealing with worn fingerprints, the traditional fingerprint impression technique showed a reduced unlocking success rate, progressively decreasing with increasing degrees of finger wear. In contrast, 3D-printed backup fingerprints, with image processing and optimization of ridge height, mitigated the impact of fingerprint wear on the unlocking capability, resulting in an unlocking success rate of 84.4% or higher. Individuals with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) face increased accident risks due to excessive daytime sleepiness. PERCLOS, a recognized drowsiness detection method, encounters challenges from image quality, eyewear interference, and lighting variations, impacting its performance, and requiring validation through physiological signals. We propose visual-based scoring using adaptive thresholding for eye aspect ratio with OpenCV for face detection and Dlib for eye detection from video recordings. This technique identified 453 drowsiness (PERCLOS ≥ 0.3 || CLOSDUR ≥ 2 s) and 474 wakefulness episodes (PERCLOS < 0.3 and CLOSDUR < 2 s) among fifty OSA drivers in a 50 min driving simulation while wearing six-channel EEG electrodes. Applying discrete wavelet transform, we derived ten EEG features, correlated them with visual-based episodes using various criteria, and assessed the sensitivity of brain regions and individual EEG channels. Among these features, theta–alpha-ratio exhibited robust mapping (94.7%) with visual-based scoring, followed by delta–alpha-ratio (87.2%) and delta–theta-ratio (86.7%). Frontal area (86.4%) and channel F4 (75.4%) aligned most episodes with theta–alpha-ratio, while frontal, and occipital regions, particularly channels F4 and O2, displayed superior alignment across multiple features. Adding frontal or occipital channels could correlate all episodes with EEG patterns, reducing hardware needs. The prevalence of Low Probability of Interception (LPI) and Low Probability of Exploitation (LPE) radars in contemporary Electronic Warfare (EW) presents an ongoing challenge to defense mechanisms, compelling constant advances in protective strategies. Noise radars are examples of LPI and LPE systems that gained substantial prominence in the past decade despite exhibiting a common drawback of limited Doppler tolerance. The Advanced Pulse Compression Noise (APCN) waveform is a stochastic radar signal proposed to amalgamate the LPI and LPE attributes of a random waveform with the Doppler tolerance feature inherent to a linear frequency modulation. In the present work, we derive closed-form expressions describing the APCN signal's ambiguity function and spectral containment that allow for a proper analysis of its detection performance and ability to remove range ambiguities as a function of its stochastic parameters. This paper also presents a more detailed address of the LPI/LPE characteristic of APCN signals claimed in previous works. We show that sophisticated Electronic Intelligence (ELINT) systems that employ Time Frequency Analysis (TFA) and image processing methods may intercept APCN and estimate important parameters of APCN waveforms, such as bandwidth, operating frequency, time duration, and pulse repetition interval. We also present a method designed to intercept and exploit the unique characteristics of the APCN waveform. Its performance is evaluated based on the probability of such an ELINT system detecting an APCN radar signal as a function of the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) in the ELINT system. We evaluated the accuracy and precision of the random variables characterizing the proposed estimators as a function of the SNR. Results indicate a probability of detection close to 1 and show good performance, even for scenarios with a SNR slightly less than − 10 dB. The Polar Qualification System (PQS) was applied on hue spectra fingerprinting to describe color changes in tomato during storage. The cultivar 'Pitenza' was harvested at six different maturity stages, and half of the samples were subjected to gaseous 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) treatment. Reference color parameters were recorded with a vision system colorimeter instrument, and the fruit pigment concentration was assessed with the DA-index®. Additionally, acoustic firmness (Stiffness) was measured. All acquired reference parameters were used to grade fruit in the supply chain. The applied 1-MCP treatments were used to control the ripening of climacteric horticultural produce. Both the DA-index® and stiffness values, presented as chlorophyll concentration and acoustic firmness, showed significant differences among maturity stages and treated and control samples and in their kinetics during storage. The machine vision parameter PQS-X was significantly affected by 1-MCP treatment (F = 10.18, p < 0.01), while PQS-Y was primarily affected by storage time (F = 18.18, p < 0.01) and maturity stage (F = 11.15, p < 0.01). A significant correlation was achieved for acoustic firmness with normalized color (r > 0.78) and PQS-Y (r > 0.80), as well as for the DA-index® (r > 0.9). The observed color changes agreed with the reference measurements. The significant statistical effect on the PQS coordinates suggests that hue spectra fingerprinting with this data compression technique is suitable for quality assessment based on color. The degradation of road pavements due to environmental factors is a pressing issue in infrastructure maintenance, necessitating precise identification of pavement distresses. The pavement condition index (PCI) serves as a critical metric for evaluating pavement conditions, essential for effective budget allocation and performance tracking. Traditional manual PCI assessment methods are limited by labor intensity, subjectivity, and susceptibility to human error. Addressing these challenges, this paper presents a novel, end-to-end automated method for PCI calculation, integrating deep learning and image processing technologies. The first stage employs a deep learning algorithm for accurate detection of pavement cracks, followed by the application of a segmentation-based skeleton algorithm in image processing to estimate crack width precisely. This integrated approach enhances the assessment process, providing a more comprehensive evaluation of pavement integrity. The validation results demonstrate a 95% accuracy in crack detection and 90% accuracy in crack width estimation. Leveraging these results, the automated PCI rating is achieved, aligned with standards, showcasing significant improvements in the efficiency and reliability of PCI evaluations. Images obtained in an unfavorable environment may be affected by haze or fog, leading to fuzzy image details, low contrast, and loss of important information. Recently, significant progress has been achieved in the realm of image dehazing, largely due to the adoption of deep learning techniques. Owing to the lack of modules specifically designed to learn the unique characteristics of haze, existing deep neural network-based methods are impractical for processing images containing haze. In addition, most networks primarily focus on learning clear image information while disregarding potential features in hazy images. To address these limitations, we propose an innovative method called contrastive multiscale transformer for image dehazing (CMT-Net). This method uses the multiscale transformer to enable the network to learn global hazy features at multiple scales. Furthermore, we introduce feature combination attention and a haze-aware module to enhance the network's ability to handle varying concentrations of haze by assigning more weight to regions containing haze. Finally, we design a multistage contrastive learning loss incorporating different positive and negative samples at various stages to guide the network's learning process to restore real and non-hazy images. Oncology has emerged as a crucial field of study in the domain of medicine. Computed tomography has gained widespread adoption as a radiological modality for the identification and characterisation of pathologies, particularly in oncology, enabling precise identification of affected organs and tissues. However, achieving accurate liver segmentation in computed tomography scans remains a challenge due to the presence of artefacts and the varying densities of soft tissues and adjacent organs. This paper compares artificial intelligence algorithms and traditional medical image processing techniques to assist radiologists in liver segmentation in computed tomography scans and evaluates their accuracy and efficiency. Despite notable progress in the field, the limited availability of public datasets remains a significant barrier to broad participation in research studies and replication of methodologies. Future directions should focus on increasing the accessibility of public datasets, establishing standardised evaluation metrics, and advancing the development of three-dimensional segmentation techniques. In addition, maintaining a collaborative relationship between technological advances and medical expertise is essential to ensure that these innovations not only achieve technical accuracy, but also remain aligned with clinical needs and realities. Color data are often required for cultural heritage documentation. These data are typically acquired via standard digital cameras since they facilitate a quick and cost-effective way to extract RGB values from photos. However, cameras' absolute sensor responses are device-dependent and thus not colorimetric. One way to still achieve relatively accurate color data is via camera characterization, a procedure which computes a bespoke RGB-to-XYZ matrix to transform camera-dependent RGB values into the device-independent CIE XYZ color space. This article applies and assesses camera characterization techniques in heritage documentation, particularly graffiti photographed in the academic project INDIGO. To this end, this paper presents COOLPI (COlor Operations Library for Processing Images), a novel Python-based toolbox for colorimetric and spectral work, including white-point-preserving camera characterization from photos captured under diverse, real-world lighting conditions.
