Wireless sensor networks (WSNs), integral components underpinning the infrastructure of the internet of things (IoT), confront escalating threats originating from attempts at malicious jamming. Nevertheless, the limited nature of the hardware resources in distributed, low-cost WSNs, such as those for computing power and storage, poses a challenge when implementing complex and intelligent anti-jamming algorithms like deep reinforcement learning (DRL). Hence, in this paper a rapid anti-jamming method is proposed based on imitation learning in order to address this issue. First, on-network nodes obtain expert anti-jamming trajectories using heuristic algorithms, taking historical experiences into account. Second, an RNN neural network that can be used for anti-jamming decision making is trained by mimicking these expert trajectories. Finally, the late-access network nodes receive anti-jamming network parameters from the existing nodes, allowing them to obtain a policy network directly applicable to anti-jamming decision making and thus avoiding redundant learning. Experimental results demonstrate that, compared with traditional Q-learning and random frequency-hopping (RFH) algorithms, the imitation learning-based algorithm empowers late-access network nodes to swiftly acquire anti-jamming strategies that perform on par with expert strategies. Efficient routing is essential for the proper functioning of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Recent research has focused on optimizing energy and delay for these networks. Nevertheless, there is a dearth of studies that have examined the effects of volatile settings, such as chemical plants, coal mines, nuclear power plants, and battlefields, where connectivity is inconsistent. In such contexts, sensor networks may face security incidents, and environmental factors such as node movement and death can result in dynamic changes to the network topology. A novel design algorithm grounded on Dynamic Minimum Hop Selection (DMHS) was introduced in this paper. The key principle behind DMHS is to use a probabilistic forwarding decision-making process through a distributed route discovery strategy that utilizes dynamically adjusted minimum hop counts of nodes. Simulation results indicate that the life cycle of the DMHS algorithm increases by more than 12% over 700 nodes when compared to the traditional energy-saving algorithm. Furthermore, our algorithm performs better in the average delivery rate of node, and has a 10% to 21% improvement compared to the other algorithms. Indoor localization of a mobile target represents a prominent application within wireless sensor network (WSN), showcasing significant values and scientific interest. Interference, obstacles, and energy consumption are critical challenges for indoor applications and battery replacements. A proposed tracking system deals with several factors such as latency, energy consumption, and accuracy presenting an innovative solution for the mobile localization application. In this paper, a novel algorithm introduces a self-localization algorithm for mobile targets using the wake-up media access control (MAC) protocol. The developed tracking application is based on the trilateration technique with received signal strength indication (RSSI) measurements. Simulations are implemented in the objective modular network testbed in C++ (OMNeT++) discrete event simulator using the C++ programming language, and the RSSI values introduced are based on real indoor measurements. In addition, a determination approach for finding the optimal parameters of RSSI is assigned to implement for the simulation parameters. Simulation results show a significant reduction in power consumption and exceptional accuracy, with an average error of 1.91 m in 90% of cases. The mobile node location method can find unknown nodes in real time and capture the movement trajectory of unknown nodes in time, which has attracted more and more attention from researchers. Due to their advantages of simplicity and efficiency, intelligent optimization algorithms are receiving increasing attention. Compared with other algorithms, the black hole algorithm has fewer parameters and a simple structure, which is more suitable for node location in wireless sensor networks. To address the problems of weak merit-seeking ability and slow convergence of the black hole algorithm, this paper proposed an opposition-based learning black hole (OBH) algorithm and utilized it to improve the accuracy of the mobile wireless sensor network (MWSN) localization. To verify the performance of the proposed algorithm, this paper tests it on the CEC2013 test function set. The results indicate that among the several algorithms tested, the OBH algorithm performed the best. In this paper, several optimization algorithms are applied to the Monte Carlo localization algorithm, and the experimental results show that the OBH algorithm can achieve the best optimization effect in advance. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are applied in many fields, among which node localization is one of the most important parts. The Distance Vector-Hop (DV-Hop) algorithm is the most widely used range-free localization algorithm, but its localization accuracy is not high enough. In this paper, to solve this problem, a hybrid localization algorithm for an adaptive strategy-based distance vector-hop and improved sparrow search is proposed (HADSS). First, an adaptive hop count strategy is designed to refine the hop count between all sensor nodes, using a hop count correction factor for secondary correction. Compared with the simple method of using multiple communication radii, this mechanism can refine the hop counts between nodes and reduce the error, as well as the communication overhead. Second, the average hop distance of the anchor nodes is calculated using the mean square error criterion. Then, the average hop distance obtained from the unknown nodes is corrected according to a combination of the anchor node trust degree and the weighting method. Compared with the single weighting method, both the global information about the network and the local information about each anchor node are taken into account, which reduces the average hop distance errors. Simulation experiments are conducted to verify the localization performance of the proposed HADSS algorithm by considering the normalized localization error. Wireless sensors networks (WSNs) play an important role in life. With the development of 5G, its security issues have also raised concerns. Therefore, it is an important topic to study the offense and defense confrontation in WSNs. A complete information static game model is established to analyze the offense and defense confrontation problem of WSNs in 5G. An adaptive equilibrium optimizer algorithm (AEO) based on parameter adaptive strategy is proposed, which can jump out of the local optimal solution better. Experiments show that the optimization ability of AEO outperforms other algorithms on at least 80 % of the 23 classical test functions of CEC. The convergence speed of AEO is better in the early stage of population iteration. The optimal offensive and defensive strategy under different offense and defense resources through simulation experiments is analyzed. The conclusion shows that when the offensive resources are large, the offender takes an indiscriminate attack. When the defense resources are small, the defender should defend the most important elements, and when the defense resources are large, the defender should allocate the same resources to defend each element to obtain the maximum benefit. Target-barrier coverage is a newly proposed coverage problem in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The target-barrier is a closed barrier with a distance constraint from the target, which can detect intrusions from outside. In some applications, detecting intrusions from outside and monitoring the targets inside the barrier is necessary. However, due to the distance constraint, the target-barrier fails to monitor and detect the target breaching from inside in a timely manner. In this paper, we propose a convex hull attraction (CHA) algorithm to construct the target-barrier and a UAV-enhanced coverage (QUEC) algorithm based on reinforcement learning to cover targets. The CHA algorithm first divides the targets into clusters, then constructs the target-barrier for the outermost targets of the clusters, and the redundant sensors replace the failed sensors. Finally, the UAV's path is planned based on QUEC. The UAV always covers the target, which is most likely to breach. The simulation results show that, compared with the target-barrier construction algorithm (TBC) and the virtual force algorithm (VFA), CHA can reduce the number of sensors required to construct the target-barrier and extend the target-barrier lifetime. Wide-range application scenarios, such as industrial, medical, rescue, etc., are in various demand for human spatial positioning technology. However, the existing MEMS-based sensor positioning methods have many problems, such as large accuracy errors, poor real-time performance and a single scene. We focused on improving the accuracy of IMU-based both feet localization and path tracing, and analyzed three traditional methods. In this paper, a planar spatial human positioning method based on high-resolution pressure insoles and IMU sensors was improved, and a real-time position compensation method for walking modes was proposed. To validate the improved method, we added two high-resolution pressure insoles to our self-developed motion capture system with a wireless sensor network (WSN) system consisting of 12 IMUs. By multi-sensor data fusion, we implemented dynamic recognition and automatic matching of compensation values for five walking modes, with real-time spatial-position calculation of the touchdown foot, enhancing the 3D accuracy of its practical positioning. Finally, we compared the proposed algorithm with three old methods by statistical analysis of multiple sets of experimental data. The experimental results show that this method has higher positioning accuracy in real-time indoor positioning and path-tracking tasks. Path coverage attracts many interests in some scenarios, such as object tracing in sensor networks. However, the problem of how to conserve the constrained energy of sensors is rarely considered in existing research. This paper studies two problems in the energy conservation of sensor networks that have not been addressed before. The first problem is called the least movement of nodes on path coverage. It first proves the problem as NP-hard, and then uses curve disjunction to separate each path into some discrete points, and ultimately moves nodes to new positions under some heuristic regulations. The utilized curve disjunction technique makes the proposed mechanism unrestricted by the linear path. The second problem is called the largest lifetime on path coverage. It first separates all nodes into independent partitions by utilizing the method of largest weighted bipartite matching, and then schedules these partitions to cover all paths in the network by turns. The localization of sensor nodes is an important problem in wireless sensor networks. The DV-Hop algorithm is a typical range-free algorithm, but the localization accuracy is not high. To further improve the localization accuracy, this paper designs a DV-Hop algorithm based on multi-objective salp swarm optimization. Firstly, hop counts in the DV-Hop algorithm are subdivided, and the average hop distance is corrected based on the minimum mean-square error criterion and weighting. Secondly, the traditional single-objective optimization model is transformed into a multi-objective optimization model. Then, in the third stage of DV-Hop, the improved multi-objective salp swarm algorithm is used to estimate the node coordinates. Finally, the proposed algorithm is compared with three improved DV-Hop algorithms in two topologies. Compared with DV-Hop, The localization errors of the proposed algorithm are reduced by 50.79% and 56.79% in the two topology environments with different communication radii. The localization errors of different node numbers are decreased by 38.27% and 56.79%. The maximum reductions in localization errors are 38.44% and 56.79% for different anchor node numbers. Based on different regions, the maximum reductions in localization errors are 56.75% and 56.79%. This article proposes a queueing model of the operation of a wireless sensor network node, in which a threshold strategy for starting the node after a period of no transmission is used. In this model, transmission of packets is resumed when the number of packets in the accumulation buffer reaches a predefined level. In the literature, most of the results for models with limited access to the service station are obtained in equilibrium. In this paper, a formula for the Laplace transform of the transient queue-size distribution is obtained and written using the key input parameters of the system. The analytical apparatus uses the concept of the embedded Markov chain, the formula for total probability, renewal theory and some supporting algebraic results. Wireless Sensors Networks are integrating human daily life at a fast rate. Applications cover a wide range of fields, including home security, agriculture, climate change, fire prevention, and so on and so forth. If WSN were initially flat networks, hierarchical, or cluster-based networks have been introduced in order to achieve a better performance in terms of energy efficiency, topology management, delay minimization, load balancing, routing techniques, etc. As cluster-based algorithms proved to be efficient in terms of energy balancing, security has been of less importance in the field. Data shared by nodes in a WSN can be very sensitive depending on the field of application. Therefore, it is important to ensure security at various levels of WSN. This paper proposes a formal modeling of the energy consumed to secure communications in a cluster-based WSN in general. The exponential growth in remote sensing, coupled with advancements in integrated circuits (IC) design and fabrication technology for communication, has prompted the progress of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). WSN comprises of sensor nodes and hubs fit for detecting, processing, and communicating remotely. Sensor nodes have limited resources such as memory, energy and computation capabilities restricting their ability to process large volume of data that is generated. Compressing the data before transmission will help alleviate the problem. Many data compression methods have been proposed but mainly for image processing and a vast majority of them are not pertinent on sensor nodes because of memory impediment, energy utilization and handling speed. To overcome this issue, authors in this research have chosen Run Length Encoding (RLE) and Adaptive Huffman Encoding (AHE) data compression techniques as they can be executed on sensor nodes. Both RLE and AHE are capable of balancing compression ratio and energy utilization. In this paper, a hybrid method comprising RLE and AHE, named as H-RLEAHE, is proposed and further investigated for sensor nodes. In order to verify the efficacy of the data compression algorithms, simulations were run, and the results compared with the compression techniques employing RLE, AHE, H-RLEAHE, and without the use of any compression approach for five distinct scenarios. The results demonstrate the RLE's efficiency, as it surpasses alternative data compression methods in terms of energy efficiency, network speed, packet delivery rate, and residual energy throughout all iterations. The underwater wireless sensor network is an important component of the underwater three-dimensional monitoring system. Due to the high bit error rate, high delay, low bandwidth, limited energy, and high dynamic of underwater networks, it is very difficult to realize efficient and reliable data transmission. Therefore, this paper posits that it is not enough to design the routing algorithm only from the perspective of the transmission environment; the comprehensive design of the data transmission algorithm should also be combined with the application. An edge prediction-based adaptive data transmission algorithm (EP-ADTA) is proposed that can dynamically adapt to the needs of underwater monitoring applications and the changes in the transmission environment. EP-ADTA uses the end–edge–cloud architecture to define the underwater wireless sensor networks. The algorithm uses communication nodes as the agents, realizes the monitoring data prediction and compression according to the edge prediction, dynamically selects the transmission route, and controls the data transmission accuracy based on reinforcement learning. The simulation results show that EP-ADTA can meet the accuracy requirements of underwater monitoring applications, dynamically adapt to the changes in the transmission environment, and ensure efficient and reliable data transmission in underwater wireless sensor networks. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) achieving environmental sensing are fundamental communication layer technologies in the Internet of Things. Battery-powered sensor nodes may face many problems, such as battery drain and software problems. Therefore, the utilization of self-stabilization, which is one of the fault-tolerance techniques, brings the network back to its legitimate state when the topology is changed due to node leaves. In this technique, a scheduler decides on which nodes could execute their rules regarding spatial and temporal properties. A useful graph theoretical structure is the vertex cover that can be utilized in various WSN applications such as routing, clustering, replica placement and link monitoring. A capacitated vertex cover is the generalized version of the problem which restricts the number of edges covered by a vertex by applying a capacity constraint to limit the covered edge count. In this paper, we propose two self-stabilizing capacitated vertex cover algorithms for WSNs. To the best of our knowledge, these algorithms are the first attempts in this manner. The first algorithm is stabilized under an unfair distributed scheduler (that is, the scheduler which does not grant all enabled nodes to make their moves but guarantees the global progress of the system) at most O (n 2) step, where n is the count of nodes. The second algorithm assumes 2-hop (degree 2) knowledge about the network and runs under the unfair scheduler, which subsumes the synchronous and distributed fair scheduler and stabilizes itself after O (n) moves in O (n) step, which is acceptable for most WSN setups. We theoretically analyze the algorithms to provide proof of correctness and their step complexities. Moreover, we provide simulation setups by applying IRIS sensor node parameters and compare our algorithms with their counterparts. The gathered measurements from the simulations revealed that the proposed algorithms are faster than their competitors, use less energy and offer better vertex cover solutions. Four new algorithms (RFTA1, RFTA2, GFGF2A, and RFTA2GE) handling the event in wireless sensor and robot networks based on the greedy-face-greedy (GFG) routing extended with auctions are proposed in this paper. In this paper, we assume that all robots are mobile, and after the event is found (reported by sensors), the goal is to allocate the task to the most suitable robot to act upon the event, using either distance or the robots' remaining energy as metrics. The proposed algorithms consist of two phases. The first phase of algorithms is based on face routing, and we introduced the parameter called search radius (SR) at the end of this first phase. Routing is considered successful if the found robot is inside SR. After that, the second phase, based on auctions, is initiated by the robot found in SR trying to find a more suitable one. In the simulations, network lifetime and communication costs are measured and used for comparison. We compare our algorithms with similar algorithms from the literature (k-SAAP and BFS) used for the task assignment. RFTA2 and RFTA2GE feature up to a seven-times-longer network lifetime with significant communication overhead reduction compared to k-SAAP and BFS. Energy efficiency is one of the critical challenges in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). WSNs collect and transmit data through sensor nodes. However, the energy carried by the sensor nodes is limited. The sensor nodes need to save energy as much as possible to prolong the network lifetime. This paper proposes a game theory-based energy-efficient clustering algorithm (GEC) for wireless sensor networks, where each sensor node is regarded as a player in the game. According to the length of idle listening time in the active state, the sensor node can adopt favorable strategies for itself, and then decide whether to sleep or not. In order to avoid the selfish behavior of sensor nodes, a penalty mechanism is introduced to force the sensor nodes to adopt cooperative strategies in future operations. The simulation results show that the use of game theory can effectively save the energy consumption of the sensor network and increase the amount of network data transmission, so as to achieve the purpose of prolonging the network lifetime. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is a multi-hop wireless network composed of a group of static or mobile sensor nodes in the form of self-organization. Uneven distribution of nodes often leads to the problem of over coverage and incomplete coverage of monitoring areas. To solve this problem, this paper establishes a network coverage optimization model and proposes a coverage optimization method based on an improved hybrid strategy weed algorithm (LRDE_IWO). The improvement of the weed algorithm includes three steps. Firstly, the standard deviation of normal distribution based on the tangent function is used as the seed's new step size in the seed diffusion stage to balance the ability of the global search and local search of weed algorithm. Secondly, to avoid the problem of premature convergence, a disturbance mechanism combining enhanced Levy flight and the adaptive random walk strategy is proposed in the process of seed breeding. Finally, in competition of invasive weed stage, the differential evolution strategy is introduced to optimize the competition operation process and speed up convergence. The improved weed algorithm is applied to coverage optimization of WSNs. The simulation results show that the coverage rate of LRDE_IWO is increased by about 1% to 6% compared with the original invade weed algorithm (IWO) and the differential evolution invasive weed optimization algorithm (DE_IWO), and the coverage rate of the LRDE_IWO algorithm is increased by 4.10%, 2.73% and 1.19%, respectively, compared with the antlion optimization algorithm (ALO), the fruit fly optimization algorithm (FOA) and the gauss mutation weed algorithm (IIWO). The Time-Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH) protocol is known for its suitability in highly reliable applications within industrial wireless sensor networks. One of the most significant challenges in TSCH is determining a schedule with a minimal slotframe size that can meet the required throughput for a heterogeneous network. We proposed a Priority-based Customized Differential Evolution (PCDE) algorithm based on the determination of a collision- and interference-free transmission graph. Our schedule can encompass sensors with different data rates in the given slotframe size. This study presents a comprehensive performance evaluation of our proposed algorithm and compares the results to the Traffic-Aware Scheduling Algorithm (TASA). Sufficient simulations were performed to evaluate different metrics such as the slotframe size, throughput, delay, time complexity, and Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR) to prove that our approach achieves a significant result compared with this method. Wireless Sensors Networks have been the focus of significant attention from research and development due to their applications of collecting data from various fields such as smart cities, power grids, transportation systems, medical sectors, military, and rural areas. Accurate and reliable measurements for insightful data analysis and decision-making are the ultimate goals of sensor networks for critical domains. However, the raw data collected by WSNs usually are not reliable and inaccurate due to the imperfect nature of WSNs. Identifying misbehaviours or anomalies in the network is important for providing reliable and secure functioning of the network. However, due to resource constraints, a lightweight detection scheme is a major design challenge in sensor networks. This paper aims at designing and developing a lightweight anomaly detection scheme to improve efficiency in terms of reducing the computational complexity and communication and improving memory utilization overhead while maintaining high accuracy. To achieve this aim, one-class learning and dimension reduction concepts were used in the design. The One-Class Support Vector Machine (OCSVM) with hyper-ellipsoid variance was used for anomaly detection due to its advantage in classifying unlabelled and multivariate data. Various One-Class Support Vector Machine formulations have been investigated and Centred-Ellipsoid has been adopted in this study due to its effectiveness. Centred-Ellipsoid is the most effective kernel among studies formulations. To decrease the computational complexity and improve memory utilization, the dimensions of the data were reduced using the Candid Covariance-Free Incremental Principal Component Analysis (CCIPCA) algorithm. Extensive experiments were conducted to evaluate the proposed lightweight anomaly detection scheme. Results in terms of detection accuracy, memory utilization, computational complexity, and communication overhead show that the proposed scheme is effective and efficient compared few existing schemes evaluated. Location-based applications for security and assisted living, such as human location tracking, pet tracking and others, have increased considerably in the last few years, enabled by the fast growth of sensor networks. Sensor location information is essential for several network protocols and applications such as routing and energy harvesting, among others. Therefore, there is a need for developing new alternative localization algorithms suitable for rough, changing environments. In this paper, we formulate the Recursive Localization (RL) algorithm, based on the recursive coordinate data fusion using at least three anchor nodes (ANs), combined with a multiplane location estimation, suitable for 3D ad hoc environments. The novelty of the proposed algorithm is the recursive fusion technique to obtain a reliable location estimation of a node by combining noisy information from several nodes. The feasibility of the RL algorithm under several network environments was examined through analytic formulation and simulation processes. The proposed algorithm improved the location accuracy for all the scenarios analyzed. Comparing with other 3D range-based positioning algorithms, we observe that the proposed RL algorithm presents several advantages, such as a smaller number of required ANs and a better position accuracy for the worst cases analyzed. The application of the Internet of Things (IoT) in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) poses serious challenges in preserving network longevity since the IoT necessitates a considerable amount of energy usage for sensing, processing, and data communication. As a result, there are several conventional algorithms that aim to enhance the performance of WSN networks by incorporating various optimization strategies. These algorithms primarily focus on the network layer by developing routing protocols to perform reliable communication in an energy-efficient manner, thus leading to an enhanced network life. For increasing the network lifetime in WSNs, clustering has been widely accepted as an important method that groups sensor nodes (SNs) into clusters. Additionally, numerous researchers have been focusing on devising various methods to increase the network lifetime. The prime factor that helps to maximize the network lifetime is the minimization of energy consumption. The authors of this paper propose a multi-objective optimization approach. It selects the optimal route for transmitting packets from source to sink or the base station (BS). The proposed model employs a two-step approach. The first step employs a trust model to select the cluster heads (CHs) that manage the data communication between the BS and nodes in the cluster. Further, a novel hybrid algorithm, combining a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm and a genetic algorithm (GA), is proposed to determine the routes for data transmission. To validate the efficacy of the proposed hybrid algorithm, named PSOGA, simulations were conducted and the results were compared with the existing LEACH method and PSO, with a random route selection for five different cases. The obtained results establish the efficiency of the proposed approach, as it outperforms existing methods with increased energy efficiency, increased network throughput, high packet delivery rate, and high residual energy throughout the entire iterations. Currently, the use of unmanned vehicles, such as drones, boats and ships, in monitoring tasks where human presence is difficult or even impossible raises several issues. Continuous efforts to improve the autonomy of such vehicles have not solved all aspects of this issue. In an Internet of Unmanned Vehicles (IoUV) environment, the idea of replacing the static wireless infrastructure and reusing the mobile monitoring nodes in different conditions would converge to a dynamic solution to assure data collection in areas where there is no infrastructure that ensures Internet access. The current paper fills a significant gap, proposing an algorithm that optimises the positions of unmanned vehicles such that an ad hoc network is deployed to serve specific wireless sensor networks that have no other Internet connectivity (hilly/mountainous areas, Danube Delta) and must be connected to an Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem. The algorithm determines the optimum positions of UV nodes that decrease the path losses below the link budget threshold with minimum UV node displacement compared to their initial coordinates. The algorithm was tested in a rural scenario and 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), free space and two-ray propagation models. The paper proposes another type of network, a Flying and Surface Ad Hoc Network (FSANET), a concept which implies collaboration and coexistence between unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) and several use cases that motivate the need for such a network. Wireless sensor networks have found many applications in detecting events such as security threats, natural hazards, or technical malfunctions. An essential requirement for event detection systems is the long lifetime of battery-powered sensor nodes. This paper introduces a new method for prolonging the wireless sensor network's lifetime by reducing data transmissions between neighboring sensor nodes that cooperate in event detection. The proposed method allows sensor nodes to decide whether they need to exchange sensor readings for correctly detecting events. The sensor node takes into account the detection algorithm and verifies whether its current sensor readings can impact the event detection performed by another node. The data are transmitted only when they are found to be necessary for event detection. The proposed method was implemented in a wireless sensor network to detect the instability of cargo boxes during transportation. Experimental evaluation confirmed that the proposed method significantly extends the network lifetime and ensures the accurate detection of events. It was also shown that the introduced method is more effective in reducing data transmissions than the state-of-the-art event-triggered transmission and dual prediction algorithms. In this paper, we examine routing protocols with the shortest path in sensor networks. In doing this, we propose a genetic algorithm (GA)-based Ad Hoc On-Demand Multipath Distance Vector routing protocol (GA-AOMDV). We utilize a fitness function that optimizes routes based on the energy consumption in their nodes. We compare this algorithm with other existing ad hoc routing protocols including LEACH-GA, GA-AODV, AODV, DSR, EPAR, EBAR_BFS. Results prove that our protocol enhances the network performance in terms of packet delivery ratio, throughput, round trip time and energy consumption. Modern, commonly used cryptosystems based on encryption keys require that the length of the stream of encrypted data is approximately the length of the key or longer. In practice, this approach unnecessarily complicates strong encryption of very short messages commonly used for example in ultra-low-power and resource-constrained wireless network sensor nodes based on microcontrollers (MCUs). In such cases, the data payload can be as short as a few bits of data while the typical length of the key is several hundred bits or more. The article proposes an idea of employing a complex of two algorithms, initially applied for data compression, acting as a standard-length encryption key algorithm to increase the transmission security of very short data sequences, even as short as one or a few bytes. Ambient energy-powered sensors are becoming increasingly crucial for the sustainability of the Internet-of-Things (IoT). In particular, batteryless sensors are a cost-effective solution that require no battery maintenance, last longer and have greater weatherproofing properties due to the lack of a battery access panel. In this work, we study adaptive transmission algorithms to improve the performance of batteryless IoT sensors based on the LoRa protocol. First, we characterize the device power consumption during sensor measurement and/or transmission events. Then, we consider different scenarios and dynamically tune the most critical network parameters, such as inter-packet transmission time, data redundancy and packet size, to optimize the operation of the device. We design appropriate capacity-based storage, considering a renewable energy source (e.g., photovoltaic panel), and we analyze the probability of energy failures by exploiting both theoretical models and real energy traces. The results can be used as feedback to re-design the device to have an appropriate amount energy storage and meet certain reliability constraints. The conventional methods for indoor localization rely on technologies such as RADAR, ultrasonic, laser range localization, beacon technology, and others. Developers in the industry have started utilizing these localization techniques in iBeacon systems that use Bluetooth sensors to measure the object's location. The iBeacon-based system is appealing due to its low cost, ease of setup, signaling, and maintenance; however, with current technology, it is challenging to achieve high accuracy in indoor object localization or tracking. Furthermore, iBeacons' accuracy is unsatisfactory, and they are vulnerable to other radio signal interference and environmental noise. In order to address those challenges, our study focuses on the development of error modeling algorithms for signal calibration, uncertainty reduction, and interfered noise elimination. The new error modeling is developed on the Curve Fitted Kalman Filter (CFKF) algorithms. The reliability, accuracy, and feasibility of the CFKF algorithms are tested in the experiments. Localization is one of the essential problems in internet of things (IoT) and wireless sensor network (WSN) applications. However, most traditional range-free localization algorithms cannot fulfill the practical demand for high localization accuracy. Therefore, a localization algorithm based on an enhanced flower pollination algorithm (FPA) with Gaussian perturbation (EFPA-G) and the DV-Hop method is proposed.FPA is widely applied, but premature convergence still cannot be avoided. How to balance its global exploration and local exploitation capabilities still remains an outstanding problem. Therefore, the following improvement schemes are introduced. A search strategy based on Gaussian perturbation is proposed to solve the imbalance between the global exploration and local exploitation search capabilities. Meanwhile, to fully exploit the variability of population information, an enhanced strategy is proposed based on optimal individual and Lévy flight. Finally, in the experiments with 26 benchmark functions and WSN simulations, the former verifies that the proposed algorithm outperforms other state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of convergence and search capability. In the simulation experiment, the best value for the normalized mean squared error obtained by the most advanced algorithm, RACS, is 20.2650%, and the best value for the mean distance error is 5.07E+00. Wireless sensor networks are usually applied in hostile areas where nodes can easily be monitored and captured by an adversary. Designing a key distribution scheme with high security and reliability, low hardware requirements, and moderate communication load is crucial for wireless sensor networks. To address the above objectives, we propose a new key distribution scheme based on an ECC asymmetric encryption algorithm. The two-way authentication mechanism in the proposed scheme not only prevents illegal nodes from accessing the network, but also prevents fake base stations from communicating with the nodes. The complete key distribution and key update methods ensure the security of session keys in both static and dynamic environments. The new key distribution scheme provides a significant performance improvement compared to the classical key distribution schemes for wireless sensor networks without sacrificing reliability. Simulation results show that the proposed new scheme reduces the communication load and key storage capacity, has significant advantages in terms of secure connectivity and attack resistance, and is fully applicable to wireless sensor networks. Underwater sensor nodes are usually deployed by ships, aircraft, etc., in random drops, and there is current movement in the underwater environment, which results in an uneven distribution of sensor nodes and thus, different energy consumption in each area of the network. In addition, the underwater sensor network also has a "hot zone" problem. To address the uneven energy consumption of the network caused by the above problem, the non-uniform clustering algorithm for energy equalization is put forward. Considering the residual energy, density and coverage redundancy of nodes, this algorithm selects the cluster heads and makes them more reasonably distributed. Additionally, according to the selected cluster heads, the size of each cluster is designed to equalize the energy consumption of the network during multi-hop routing. In this process, the residual energy of cluster heads and the mobility of nodes are considered, and real-time maintenance is performed for each cluster. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is effective in prolonging the network lifetime and balancing the network energy consumption; moreover, the network coverage maintenance is better than that of other algorithms. We examine a general wireless sensor network (WSN) model which incorporates a large number of sensors distributed over a large and complex geographical area. The study proposes solutions for a flexible deployment, low cost and high reliability in a wireless sensor network. To achieve these aims, we propose the application of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) as a flying relay to receive and forward signals that employ nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) for a high spectral sharing efficiency. To obtain an optimal number of subclusters and optimal UAV positioning, we apply a sensor clustering method based on K-means unsupervised machine learning in combination with the gap statistic method. The study proposes an algorithm to optimize the trajectory of the UAV, i.e., the centroid-to-next-nearest-centroid (CNNC) path. Because a subcluster containing multiple sensors produces cochannel interference which affects the signal decoding performance at the UAV, we propose a diagonal matrix as a phase-shift framework at the UAV to separate and decode the messages received from the sensors. The study examines the outage probability performance of an individual WSN and provides results based on Monte Carlo simulations and analyses. To address the problems of uneven distribution and low coverage of wireless sensor network (WSN) nodes in random deployment, a node coverage optimization strategy with an improved COOT bird algorithm (COOTCLCO) is proposed. Firstly, the chaotic tent map is used to initialize the population, increase the diversity of the population, and lay the foundation for the global search for the optimal solutions. Secondly, the Lévy flight strategy is used to perturb the individual positions to improve the search range of the population. Thirdly, Cauchy mutation and an opposition-based learning strategy are fused to perturb the optimal solutions to generate new solutions and enhance the ability of the algorithm to jump out of the local optimum. Finally, the COOTCLCO algorithm is applied to WSN coverage optimization problems. Simulation results show that COOTCLCO has a faster convergence speed and better search accuracy than several other typical algorithms on 23 benchmark test functions; meanwhile, the coverage rate of the COOTCLCO algorithm is increased by 9.654%, 13.888%, 6.188%, 5.39%, 1.31%, and 2.012% compared to particle swarm optimization (PSO), butterfly optimization algorithm (BOA), seagull optimization algorithm (SOA), whale optimization algorithm (WOA), Harris hawks optimization (HHO), and bald eagle search (BES), respectively. This means that in terms of coverage optimization effect, COOTCLCO can obtain a higher coverage rate compared to these algorithms. The experimental results demonstrate that COOTCLCO can effectively improve the coverage rate of sensor nodes and improve the distribution of nodes in WSN coverage optimization problems. In wireless sensor networks (WSN), flooding increases the reliability in terms of successful transmission of a packet with higher overhead. The flooding consumes the resources of the network quickly, especially in sensor networks, mobile ad-hoc networks, and vehicular ad-hoc networks in terms of the lifetime of the node, lifetime of the network, and battery lifetime, etc. This paper aims to develop an efficient and reliable protocol by using multicasting and unicasting to overcome the issue of higher overhead due to flooding. Unicasting is used when the desired destination is at a minimum distance to avoid an extra overhead and increases the efficiency of the network in terms of overhead and energy because unicasting is favorable where the distance is minimum. Similarly, multicasting is used when the desired destination is at maximum distance and increases the network's reliability in terms of throughput. The results are implemented in the Department of Computer Science, Bacha Khan University Charsadda (BKUC), Pakistan, as well as in the Network Simulator-2 (NS-2). The results are compared with benchmark schemes such as PUMA and ERASCA, and based on the results, the performance of the proposed approach is improved in terms of overhead, throughput, and packet delivery fraction by avoiding flooding. One of the major concerns in 5G IoT networks is that most of the sensor nodes are powered through limited lifetime, which seriously affects the performance of the networks. In this article, Compressive sensing (CS) technique is used to decrease transmission cost in 5G IoT networks. Sparse basis is one of the important steps in the CS. However, most of the existing sparse basis-based method such as DCT (Discrete cosine transform) and DFT (Discrete Fourier Transform) basis do not capture data structure characteristics in the networks. They also do not take into consideration multi-resolution representations. In addition, some of sparse basis-driven methods exploit either spatial or temporal features, resulting in performance degradation of CS-based strategies. To address these challenging problems, we propose a novel spatial–temporal correlation basis algorithm (SCBA). Subsequently, an optimal basis algorithm (OBA) is provided considering greedy scoring criteria. To evaluate the efficiency of OBA, orthogonal wavelet basis algorithm (OWBA) by employing NS (Numerical Sparsity) and GI (Gini Index) sparse metrics is also presented. In addition, we discuss the complexity of the above three algorithms, and prove that OBA has low numerical rank. After experimental evaluation, we found that OBA is capable of the sparsest representing original signal compared to spatial, DCT, haar-1, haar-2, and rbio5.5. In wireless sensor networks, it is important to use the right number of sensors to optimize the network and consider the key design and cost. Due to the limited power of sensors, important issues include how to control the state of the sensor through an automatic control algorithm and how to power-save and efficiently distribute work. However, sensor nodes are usually deployed in dangerous or inaccessible locations. Therefore, it is difficult and impractical to supply power to sensors through humans. In this study, we propose a high reliability control algorithm with fast convergence and strong self-organization ability called the sensor activity control algorithm (SACA), which can efficiently control the number of sensors in the active state and extend their use time. In the next round, SACA considers the relationship between the total number of active sensors and the target value and determines the state of the sensor. The data transmission technology of random access is used between the sensor and the base station. Therefore, the sensor in the sleep state does not need to receive the feedback packet from the base station. The sensor can achieve true dormancy and power-saving effects. It is necessary to detect multi-type farmland obstacles in real time and accurately for unmanned agricultural vehicles. An improved YOLOv5s algorithm based on the K-Means clustering algorithm and CIoU Loss function was proposed to improve detection precision and speed up real-time detection. The K-Means clustering algorithm was used in order to generate anchor box scales to accelerate the convergence speed of model training. The CIoU Loss function, combining the three geometric measures of overlap area, center distance and aspect ratio, was adopted to reduce the occurrence of missed and false detection and improve detection precision. The experimental results showed that the inference time of a single image was reduced by 75% with the improved YOLOv5s algorithm; compared with that of the Faster R-CNN algorithm, real-time performance was effectively improved. Furthermore, the mAP value of the improved algorithm was increased by 5.80% compared with that of the original YOLOv5s, which indicates that using the CIoU Loss function had an obvious effect on reducing the missed detection and false detection of the original YOLOv5s. For wireless sensor networks (WSN) with connection failure uncertainties, traditional minimum spanning trees are no longer a feasible option for selecting routes. Reliability should come first before cost since no one wants a network that cannot work most of the time. First, reliable route selection for WSNs with connection failure uncertainties is formulated by considering the top-k most reliable spanning trees (RST) from graphs with structural uncertainties. The reliable spanning trees are defined as a set of spanning trees with top reliabilities and limited tree weights based on the possible world model. Second, two tree-filtering algorithms are proposed: the k minimum spanning tree (KMST) based tree-filtering algorithm and the depth-first search (DFS) based tree-filtering algorithm. Tree-filtering strategy filters the candidate RSTs generated by tree enumeration with explicit weight thresholds and implicit reliability thresholds. Third, an innovative edge-filtering method is presented in which edge combinations that act as upper bounds for RST reliabilities are utilized to filter the RST candidates and to prune search spaces. Optimization strategies are also proposed for improving pruning capabilities further and for enhancing computations. A Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is connected if a communication path exists among each pair of sensor nodes (motes). Maintaining reliable connectivity in WSNs is a complicated task, since any failure in the nodes can cause the data transmission paths to break. In a k-connected WSN, the connectivity survives after failure in any k-1 nodes; hence, preserving the k-connectivity ensures that the WSN can permit k-1 node failures without wasting the connectivity. Higher k values will increase the reliability of a WSN against node failures. We propose a simple and efficient algorithm (PINC) to accomplish movement-based k-connectivity restoration that divides the nodes into the critical, which are the nodes whose failure reduces k, and non-critical groups. The PINC algorithm pickups and moves the non-critical nodes when a critical node stops working. This algorithm moves a non-critical node with minimum movement cost to the position of the failed mote. The measurements obtained from the testbed of real IRIS motes and Kobuki robots, along with extensive simulations, revealed that the PINC restores the k-connectivity by generating optimum movements faster than its competitors.
