The process of image fusion is the process of enriching an image and improving the image's quality, so as to facilitate the subsequent image processing and analysis. With the increasing importance of image fusion technology, the fusion of infrared and visible images has received extensive attention. In today's deep learning environment, deep learning is widely used in the field of image fusion. However, in some applications, it is not possible to obtain a large amount of training data. Because some special organs of snakes can receive and process infrared information and visible information, the fusion method of infrared and visible light to simulate the visual mechanism of snakes came into being. Therefore, this paper takes into account the perspective of visual bionics to achieve image fusion; such methods do not need to obtain a significant amount of training data. However, most of the fusion methods for simulating snakes face the problem of unclear details, so this paper combines this method with a pulse coupled neural network (PCNN). By studying two receptive field models of retinal nerve cells, six dual-mode cell imaging mechanisms of rattlesnakes and their mathematical models and the PCNN model, an improved fusion method of infrared and visible images was proposed. For the proposed fusion method, eleven groups of source images were used, and three non-reference image quality evaluation indexes were compared with seven other fusion methods. The performance of the tire has a very important impact on the safe driving of the car, and in the actual use of the tire, due to complex road conditions or use conditions, it will inevitably cause immeasurable wear, scratches and other damage. In order to effectively detect the damage existing in the key parts of the tire, a tire surface damage detection method based on image processing was proposed. In this method, the image of tire side is captured by camera first. Then, the collected images are preprocessed by optimizing the multi-scale bilateral filtering algorithm to enhance the detailed information of the damaged area, and the optimization effect is obvious. Thirdly, the image segmentation based on clustering algorithm is carried out. Finally, the Harris corner detection method is used to capture the "salt and pepper" corner of the target region, and the segmsegmed binary image is screened and matched based on histogram correlation, and the target region is finally obtained. This paper presents an experimental evaluation of a wearable light-emitting diode (LED) transmitter in an optical camera communications (OCC) system. The evaluation is conducted under conditions of controlled user movement during indoor physical exercise, encompassing both mild and intense exercise scenarios. We introduce an image processing algorithm designed to identify a template signal transmitted by the LED and detected within the image. To enhance this process, we utilize the dynamics of controlled exercise-induced motion to limit the tracking process to a smaller region within the image. We demonstrate the feasibility of detecting the transmitting source within the frames, and thus limit the tracking process to a smaller region within the image, achieving an reduction of 87.3% for mild exercise and 79.0% for intense exercise. Artificial retinas have revolutionized the lives of many blind people by enabling their ability to perceive vision via an implanted chip. Despite significant advancements, there are some limitations that cannot be ignored. Presenting all objects captured in a scene makes their identification difficult. Addressing this limitation is necessary because the artificial retina can utilize a very limited number of pixels to represent vision information. This problem in a multi-object scenario can be mitigated by enhancing images such that only the major objects are considered to be shown in vision. Although simple techniques like edge detection are used, they fall short in representing identifiable objects in complex scenarios, suggesting the idea of integrating primary object edges. To support this idea, the proposed classification model aims at identifying the primary objects based on a suggested set of selective features. The proposed classification model can then be equipped into the artificial retina system for filtering multiple primary objects to enhance vision. The suitability of handling multi-objects enables the system to cope with real-world complex scenarios. The proposed classification model is based on a multi-label deep neural network, specifically designed to leverage from the selective feature set. Initially, the enhanced images proposed in this research are compared with the ones that utilize an edge detection technique for single, dual, and multi-object images. These enhancements are also verified through an intensity profile analysis. Subsequently, the proposed classification model's performance is evaluated to show the significance of utilizing the suggested features. This includes evaluating the model's ability to correctly classify the top five, four, three, two, and one object(s), with respective accuracies of up to 84.8%, 85.2%, 86.8%, 91.8%, and 96.4%. Several comparisons such as training/validation loss and accuracies, precision, recall, specificity, and area under a curve indicate reliable results. Based on the overall evaluation of this study, it is concluded that using the suggested set of selective features not only improves the classification model's performance, but aligns with the specific problem to address the challenge of correctly identifying objects in multi-object scenarios. Fingerprint recognition systems have achieved widespread integration into various technological devices, including cell phones, computers, door locks, and time attendance machines. Nevertheless, individuals with worn fingerprints encounter challenges when attempting to unlock original fingerprint systems, which results in disruptions to their daily activities. This study explores two distinct methods for fingerprint backup: traditional fingerprint impression and 3D printing technologies. Unlocking tests were conducted on commonly available optical fingerprint lock-equipped cell phones to assess the efficacy of these methods, particularly in unlocking with worn fingerprints. The research findings indicated that the traditional fingerprint impression method exhibited high fidelity in reproducing fingerprint patterns, achieving an impressive unlocking success rate of 97.8% for imprinting unworn fingerprints. However, when dealing with worn fingerprints, the traditional fingerprint impression technique showed a reduced unlocking success rate, progressively decreasing with increasing degrees of finger wear. In contrast, 3D-printed backup fingerprints, with image processing and optimization of ridge height, mitigated the impact of fingerprint wear on the unlocking capability, resulting in an unlocking success rate of 84.4% or higher. Thus, the utilization of 3D printing technology proves advantageous for individuals with severely worn or incomplete fingerprints, providing a viable solution for unforeseen circumstances. Individuals with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) face increased accident risks due to excessive daytime sleepiness. PERCLOS, a recognized drowsiness detection method, encounters challenges from image quality, eyewear interference, and lighting variations, impacting its performance, and requiring validation through physiological signals. We propose visual-based scoring using adaptive thresholding for eye aspect ratio with OpenCV for face detection and Dlib for eye detection from video recordings. This technique identified 453 drowsiness (PERCLOS ≥ 0.3 || CLOSDUR ≥ 2 s) and 474 wakefulness episodes (PERCLOS < 0.3 and CLOSDUR < 2 s) among fifty OSA drivers in a 50 min driving simulation while wearing six-channel EEG electrodes. Applying discrete wavelet transform, we derived ten EEG features, correlated them with visual-based episodes using various criteria, and assessed the sensitivity of brain regions and individual EEG channels. Among these features, theta–alpha-ratio exhibited robust mapping (94.7%) with visual-based scoring, followed by delta–alpha-ratio (87.2%) and delta–theta-ratio (86.7%). Frontal area (86.4%) and channel F4 (75.4%) aligned most episodes with theta–alpha-ratio, while frontal, and occipital regions, particularly channels F4 and O2, displayed superior alignment across multiple features. Adding frontal or occipital channels could correlate all episodes with EEG patterns, reducing hardware needs. The prevalence of Low Probability of Interception (LPI) and Low Probability of Exploitation (LPE) radars in contemporary Electronic Warfare (EW) presents an ongoing challenge to defense mechanisms, compelling constant advances in protective strategies. Noise radars are examples of LPI and LPE systems that gained substantial prominence in the past decade despite exhibiting a common drawback of limited Doppler tolerance. The Advanced Pulse Compression Noise (APCN) waveform is a stochastic radar signal proposed to amalgamate the LPI and LPE attributes of a random waveform with the Doppler tolerance feature inherent to a linear frequency modulation. In the present work, we derive closed-form expressions describing the APCN signal's ambiguity function and spectral containment that allow for a proper analysis of its detection performance and ability to remove range ambiguities as a function of its stochastic parameters. This paper also presents a more detailed address of the LPI/LPE characteristic of APCN signals claimed in previous works. We show that sophisticated Electronic Intelligence (ELINT) systems that employ Time Frequency Analysis (TFA) and image processing methods may intercept APCN and estimate important parameters of APCN waveforms, such as bandwidth, operating frequency, time duration, and pulse repetition interval. We also present a method designed to intercept and exploit the unique characteristics of the APCN waveform. Its performance is evaluated based on the probability of such an ELINT system detecting an APCN radar signal as a function of the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) in the ELINT system. We evaluated the accuracy and precision of the random variables characterizing the proposed estimators as a function of the SNR. Results indicate a probability of detection close to 1 and show good performance, even for scenarios with a SNR slightly less than − 10 dB. The Polar Qualification System (PQS) was applied on hue spectra fingerprinting to describe color changes in tomato during storage. The cultivar 'Pitenza' was harvested at six different maturity stages, and half of the samples were subjected to gaseous 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) treatment. Reference color parameters were recorded with a vision system colorimeter instrument, and the fruit pigment concentration was assessed with the DA-index®. Additionally, acoustic firmness (Stiffness) was measured. All acquired reference parameters were used to grade fruit in the supply chain. The applied 1-MCP treatments were used to control the ripening of climacteric horticultural produce. Both the DA-index® and stiffness values, presented as chlorophyll concentration and acoustic firmness, showed significant differences among maturity stages and treated and control samples and in their kinetics during storage. The machine vision parameter PQS-X was significantly affected by 1-MCP treatment (F = 10.18, p < 0.01), while PQS-Y was primarily affected by storage time (F = 18.18, p < 0.01) and maturity stage (F = 11.15, p < 0.01). A significant correlation was achieved for acoustic firmness with normalized color (r > 0.78) and PQS-Y (r > 0.80), as well as for the DA-index® (r > 0.9). The observed color changes agreed with the reference measurements. The significant statistical effect on the PQS coordinates suggests that hue spectra fingerprinting with this data compression technique is suitable for quality assessment based on color. The degradation of road pavements due to environmental factors is a pressing issue in infrastructure maintenance, necessitating precise identification of pavement distresses. The pavement condition index (PCI) serves as a critical metric for evaluating pavement conditions, essential for effective budget allocation and performance tracking. Traditional manual PCI assessment methods are limited by labor intensity, subjectivity, and susceptibility to human error. Addressing these challenges, this paper presents a novel, end-to-end automated method for PCI calculation, integrating deep learning and image processing technologies. The first stage employs a deep learning algorithm for accurate detection of pavement cracks, followed by the application of a segmentation-based skeleton algorithm in image processing to estimate crack width precisely. Images obtained in an unfavorable environment may be affected by haze or fog, leading to fuzzy image details, low contrast, and loss of important information. Recently, significant progress has been achieved in the realm of image dehazing, largely due to the adoption of deep learning techniques. Owing to the lack of modules specifically designed to learn the unique characteristics of haze, existing deep neural network-based methods are impractical for processing images containing haze. In addition, most networks primarily focus on learning clear image information while disregarding potential features in hazy images. To address these limitations, we propose an innovative method called contrastive multiscale transformer for image dehazing (CMT-Net). This method uses the multiscale transformer to enable the network to learn global hazy features at multiple scales. Furthermore, we introduce feature combination attention and a haze-aware module to enhance the network's ability to handle varying concentrations of haze by assigning more weight to regions containing haze. Finally, we design a multistage contrastive learning loss incorporating different positive and negative samples at various stages to guide the network's learning process to restore real and non-hazy images. Oncology has emerged as a crucial field of study in the domain of medicine. Computed tomography has gained widespread adoption as a radiological modality for the identification and characterisation of pathologies, particularly in oncology, enabling precise identification of affected organs and tissues. However, achieving accurate liver segmentation in computed tomography scans remains a challenge due to the presence of artefacts and the varying densities of soft tissues and adjacent organs. Color data are often required for cultural heritage documentation. These data are typically acquired via standard digital cameras since they facilitate a quick and cost-effective way to extract RGB values from photos. However, cameras' absolute sensor responses are device-dependent and thus not colorimetric. One way to still achieve relatively accurate color data is via camera characterization, a procedure which computes a bespoke RGB-to-XYZ matrix to transform camera-dependent RGB values into the device-independent CIE XYZ color space. This article applies and assesses camera characterization techniques in heritage documentation, particularly graffiti photographed in the academic project INDIGO. To this end, this paper presents COOLPI (COlor Operations Library for Processing Images), a novel Python-based toolbox for colorimetric and spectral work, including white-point-preserving camera characterization from photos captured under diverse, real-world lighting conditions. An integrated automatic optical inspection (iAOI) system with a procedure was proposed for a printed circuit board (PCB) production line, in which pattern distortions and performance deviations appear with process variations. The iAOI system was demonstrated in a module comprising a camera and lens, showing improved supportiveness for commercially available hardware. The iAOI procedure was realized in a serial workflow of image registration, threshold setting, image gradient, marker alignment, and geometric transformation; furthermore, five operations with numerous functions were prepared for image processing. In addition to the system and procedure, a graphical user interface (GUI) that displays sequential image operation results with analyzed characteristics was established for simplicity. To demonstrate its effectiveness, self-complementary Archimedean spiral antenna (SCASA) samples fabricated via standard PCB fabrication and intentional pattern distortions were demonstrated. The results indicated that, compared with other existing methods, the proposed iAOI system and procedure provide unified and standard operations with efficiency, which result in scientific and unambiguous judgments on pattern quality. For the calibration of linear scales, comparators are generally used. Comparators are devices that enable the movement of an evaluation apparatus over a calibrated scale along a linear base with high precision. The construction of a comparator includes a movable carriage that carries the device for the evaluation of the position of the given edge of the line scale relative to the beginning of the scale. In principle, it involves a camera capturing the scale of the measurer, where the position of the camera's projection center is measured using an interferometer. This article addresses the development of a comparator assembled from low-cost components, as well as the description of systematic influences related to the movement of individual parts of the system, such as the inclination and rotation of the camera and directional and height deviations during the carriage's movement. This article also includes an evaluation of the edge of the given scale with subpixel accuracy, addressing distortion elimination and excluding the influences of impurities or imperfections on the scale. Livestock's live body dimensions are a pivotal indicator of economic output. Manual measurement is labor-intensive and time-consuming, often eliciting stress responses in the livestock. With the advancement of computer technology, the techniques for livestock live body dimension measurement have progressed rapidly, yielding significant research achievements. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the recent advancements in livestock live body dimension measurement, emphasizing the crucial role of computer-vision-based sensors. The discussion covers three main aspects: sensing data acquisition, sensing data processing, and sensing data analysis. The common techniques and measurement procedures in, and the current research status of, live body dimension measurement are introduced, along with a comparative analysis of their respective merits and drawbacks. Livestock data acquisition is the initial phase of live body dimension measurement, where sensors are employed as data collection equipment to obtain information conducive to precise measurements. Subsequently, the acquired data undergo processing, leveraging techniques such as 3D vision technology, computer graphics, image processing, and deep learning to calculate the measurements accurately. Lastly, this paper addresses the existing challenges within the domain of livestock live body dimension measurement in the livestock industry, highlighting the potential contributions of computer-vision-based sensors. This article presents the development of a vision system designed to enhance the autonomous navigation capabilities of robots in complex forest environments. Leveraging RGBD and thermic cameras, specifically the Intel RealSense 435i and FLIR ADK, the system integrates diverse visual sensors with advanced image processing algorithms. Detecting parcels accurately and efficiently has always been a challenging task when unloading from trucks onto conveyor belts because of the diverse and complex ways in which parcels are stacked. Conventional methods struggle to quickly and accurately classify the various shapes and surface patterns of unordered parcels. In this paper, we propose a parcel-picking surface detection method based on deep learning and image processing for the efficient unloading of diverse and unordered parcels. Our goal is to develop a systematic image processing algorithm that emphasises the boundaries of parcels regardless of their shape, pattern, or layout. The core of the algorithm is the utilisation of RGB-D technology for detecting the primary boundary lines regardless of obstacles such as adhesive labels, tapes, or parcel surface patterns. For cases where detecting the boundary lines is difficult owing to narrow gaps between parcels, we propose using deep learning-based boundary line detection through the You Only Look at Coefficients (YOLACT) model. Using image segmentation techniques, the algorithm efficiently predicts boundary lines, enabling the accurate detection of irregularly sized parcels with complex surface patterns. Furthermore, even for rotated parcels, we can extract their edges through complex mathematical operations using the depth values of the specified position, enabling the detection of the wider surfaces of the rotated parcels. Finally, we validate the accuracy and real-time performance of our proposed method through various case studies, achieving mAP (50) values of 93.8% and 90.8% for randomly sized and rotationally covered boxes with diverse colours and patterns, respectively. In this paper, we introduce a novel panoptic segmentation method called the Mask-Pyramid Network. Existing Mask RCNN-based methods first generate a large number of box proposals and then filter them at each feature level, which requires a lot of computational resources, while most of the box proposals are suppressed and discarded in the Non-Maximum Suppression process. Additionally, for panoptic segmentation, it is a problem to properly fuse the semantic segmentation results with the Mask RCNN-produced instance segmentation results. To address these issues, we propose a new mask pyramid mechanism to distinguish objects and generate much fewer proposals by referring to existing segmented masks, so as to reduce computing resource consumption. The Mask-Pyramid Network generates object proposals and predicts masks from larger to smaller sizes. It records the pixel area occupied by the larger object masks, and then only generates proposals on the unoccupied areas. Each object mask is represented as a H × W × 1 logit, which fits well in format with the semantic segmentation logits. By applying SoftMax to the concatenated semantic and instance segmentation logits, it is easy and natural to fuse both segmentation results. We empirically demonstrate that the proposed Mask-Pyramid Network achieves comparable accuracy performance on the Cityscapes and COCO datasets. Infrared image processing is an effective method for diagnosing faults in electrical equipment, in which target device segmentation and temperature feature extraction are key steps. Target device segmentation separates the device to be diagnosed from the image, while temperature feature extraction analyzes whether the device is overheating and has potential faults. However, the segmentation of infrared images of electrical equipment is slow due to issues such as high computational complexity, and the temperature information extracted lacks accuracy due to the insufficient consideration of the non-linear relationship between the image grayscale and temperature. Therefore, in this study, we propose an optimized maximum between-class variance thresholding method (OTSU) segmentation algorithm based on the Gray Wolf Optimization (GWO) algorithm, which accelerates the segmentation speed by optimizing the threshold determination process using OTSU. The experimental results show that compared to the non-optimized method, the optimized segmentation method increases the threshold calculation time by more than 83.99% while maintaining similar segmentation results. Based on this, to address the issue of insufficient accuracy in temperature feature extraction, we propose a temperature value extraction method for infrared images based on the K-nearest neighbor (KNN) algorithm. The experimental results demonstrate that compared to traditional linear methods, this method achieves a 73.68% improvement in the maximum residual absolute value of the extracted temperature values and a 78.95% improvement in the average residual absolute value. In recent years, the development of image super-resolution (SR) has explored the capabilities of convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The current research tends to use deeper CNNs to improve performance. However, blindly increasing the depth of the network does not effectively enhance its performance. Moreover, as the network depth increases, more issues arise during the training process, requiring additional training techniques. In this paper, we propose a lightweight image super-resolution reconstruction algorithm (SISR-RFDM) based on the residual feature distillation mechanism (RFDM). Building upon residual blocks, we introduce spatial attention (SA) modules to provide more informative cues for recovering high-frequency details such as image edges and textures. Additionally, the output of each residual block is utilized as hierarchical features for global feature fusion (GFF), enhancing inter-layer information flow and feature reuse. Finally, all these features are fed into the reconstruction module to restore high-quality images. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm outperforms other comparative algorithms in terms of both subjective visual effects and objective evaluation quality. In the face of today's ever-evolving global health landscape and ambient assisted living (AAL), marked by the persistent emergence of novel viruses and diseases that impact vulnerable categories and individual safety, the need for innovative disinfection solutions has surged to unprecedented levels. In pursuit of advancing the field of autonomous UV-C disinfection robotics, we conducted two comprehensive state-of-the-art analyses: the first one in the literature and the second one in existing commercial disinfection robots to identify current challenges. Of all of the challenges, we consider the most outstanding ones to be safeguarding humans and animals and understanding the surroundings while operating the disinfection process challenges that we will address in this article. While UV-C lamps have demonstrated their effectiveness in sterilizing air and surfaces, the field of autonomous UV-C disinfection robotics represents a critical domain that requires advancement, particularly in safeguarding the wellbeing of humans and animals during operation. Operating UV-C disinfection robots in close proximity to humans or animals introduces inherent risks, and existing disinfection robots often fall short in incorporating advanced safety systems. In response to these challenges, we propose the RoboCoV Cleaner—an indoor autonomous UV-C disinfection robot equipped with an advanced dual and redundant safety system. This novel approach incorporates multiple passive infrared (PIR) sensors and AI object detection on a 360-degree camera. Under our test, the dual-redundant system reached more than 90% when detecting humans with high accuracy using the AI system 99% up to 30 m away in a university hallway (different light conditions) combined with the PIR system (with lower accuracy). The PIR system was proved to be a redundant system for uninterrupted operation during communication challenges, ensuring continuous sensor information collection with a swift response time of 50 ms (image processing within 200 ms). It empowers the robot to detect and react to human presence, even under challenging conditions, such as when individuals wear masks, in complete darkness, under UV light, or in environments with blurred visual conditions. In our test, the detection system performed outstandingly well with up to 99% detection rate of humans. Beyond safety features, the RoboCoV Cleaner can identify objects in its surroundings. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) with Digital Twins (DTs) has emerged as a promising approach to revolutionize healthcare, particularly in terms of diagnosis and management of thoracic disorders. This study proposes a comprehensive framework, named Lung-DT, which leverages IoT sensors and AI algorithms to establish the digital representation of a patient's respiratory health. Using the YOLOv8 neural network, the Lung-DT system accurately classifies chest X-rays into five distinct categories of lung diseases, including "normal", "covid", "lung_opacity", "pneumonia", and "tuberculosis". The performance of the system was evaluated employing a chest X-ray dataset available in the literature, demonstrating average accuracy of 96.8%, precision of 92%, recall of 97%, and F1-score of 94%. The detection of smoky diesel vehicles is a key step in reducing air pollution from transportation. We propose a new method for identifying smoky vehicles that proceeds in three stages: (1) the detection of vehicle shapes, license plates, and smoke regions; (2) the implementation of the two matching techniques based on the smoke region–vehicle shape and smoke region–license plate relationships; and (3) the refinement of the smoke region detected. The first stage involves the evaluation of various You Only Look Once (YOLO) models to identify the best-fit model for object detection. YOLOv5s was the most effective, particularly for the smoke region prediction, achieving a precision of 91.4% and a mean average precision at 0.5 (mAP@0.5) of 91%. It also had the highest mean mAP@0.5 of 93.9% across all three classes. The application of the two matching techniques significantly reduced the rate of false negatives and enhanced the rate of true positives for the smoky diesel vehicles through the detection of their license plates. Moreover, a refinement process based on image processing theory was implemented, effectively eliminating incorrect smoke region predictions caused by vehicle shadows. As a result, our method achieved a detection rate of 97.45% and a precision of 93.50%, which are higher than that of the two existing popular methods, and produced an acceptable false alarm rate of 5.44%. Particularly, the proposed method substantially reduced the processing time to as low as 85 ms per image, compared to 140.3 and 182.6 ms per image in the two reference studies. Climbing plants, such as common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), exhibit complex motion patterns that have long captivated researchers. In this study, we introduce a stereo vision machine system for the in-depth analysis of the movement of climbing plants, using image processing and computer vision. Our approach involves two synchronized cameras, one lateral to the plant and the other overhead, enabling the simultaneous 2D position tracking of the plant tip. These data are then leveraged to reconstruct the 3D position of the tip. Furthermore, we investigate the impact of external factors, particularly the presence of support structures, on plant movement dynamics. The proposed method is able to extract the position of the tip in 86–98% of cases, achieving an average reprojection error below 4 px, which means an approximate error in the 3D localization of about 0.5 cm. In recent years, optical camera communication (OCC) has garnered attention as a research focus. OCC uses optical light to transmit data by scattering the light in various directions. Although this can be advantageous with multiple transmitter scenarios, there are situations in which only a single transmitter is permitted to communicate. Therefore, this method is proposed to fulfill the latter requirement using 2D object size to calculate the proximity of the objects through an AI object detection model. This approach enables prioritization among transmitters based on the transmitter proximity to the receiver for communication, facilitating alternating communication with multiple transmitters. The image processing employed when receiving the signals from transmitters enables communication to be performed without the need to modify the camera parameters. During the implementation, the distance between the transmitter and receiver varied between 1.0 and 5.0 m, and the system demonstrated a maximum data rate of 3.945 kbps with a minimum BER of 4.2 × 10 − 3 . The term out-of-stock (OOS) describes a problem that occurs when shoppers come to a store and the product they are seeking is not present on its designated shelf. Missing products generate huge sales losses and may lead to a declining reputation or the loss of loyal customers. In this paper, we propose a novel deep-learning (DL)-based OOS-detection method that utilizes a two-stage training process and a post-processing technique designed for the removal of inaccurate detections. To develop the method, we utilized an OOS detection dataset that contains a commonly used fully empty OOS class and a novel class that represents the frontal OOS. We present a new image augmentation procedure in which some existing OOS instances are enlarged by duplicating and mirroring themselves over nearby products. An object-detection model is first pre-trained using only augmented shelf images and, then, fine-tuned on the original data. During the inference, the detected OOS instances are post-processed based on their aspect ratio. In particular, the detected instances are discarded if their aspect ratio is higher than the maximum or lower than the minimum instance aspect ratio found in the dataset. The experimental results showed that the proposed method outperforms the existing DL-based OOS-detection methods and detects fully empty and frontal OOS instances with 86.3% and 83.7% of the average precision, respectively. The digital image method of monitoring structural displacement is receiving more attention today, especially in non-contact structure health monitoring. Some obvious advantages of this method, such as economy and convenience, were shown while it was used to monitor the deformation of the bridge structure during the service period. The image processing technology was used to extract structural deformation feature information from surveillance video images containing structural displacement in order to realize a new non-contact online monitoring method in this paper. The influence of different imaging distances and angles on the conversion coefficient (η) that converts the pixel coordinates to the actual displacement was first studied experimentally. Then, the measuring and tracking of bridge structural displacement based on surveillance video images was investigated by laboratory-scale experiments under idealized conditions. The results showed that the video imaging accuracy can be affected by changes in the relative position of the imaging device and measured structure, which is embodied in the change in η (actual size of individual pixel) on the structured image. The increase in distance between the measured structure and the monitoring equipment will have a significant effect on the change in the η value. The value of η varies linearly with the change in shooting distance. The value of η will be affected by the changes in shooting angle. The millimeter-level online monitoring of the structure displacement can be realized using images based on surveillance video images. Recent advancements in computer vision technology, developments in sensors and sensor-collecting approaches, and the use of deep and transfer learning approaches have excelled in the development of autonomous vehicles. On-road vehicle detection has become a task of significant importance, especially due to exponentially increasing research on autonomous vehicles during the past few years. With high-end computing resources, a large number of deep learning models have been trained and tested for on-road vehicle detection recently. Vehicle detection may become a challenging process especially due to varying light and weather conditions like night, snow, sand, rain, foggy conditions, etc. In addition, vehicle detection should be fast enough to work in real time. This study investigates the use of the recent YOLO version, YOLOx, to detect vehicles in bad weather conditions including rain, fog, snow, and sandstorms. The model is tested on the publicly available benchmark dataset DAWN containing images containing four bad weather conditions, different illuminations, background, and number of vehicles in a frame. The efficacy of the model is evaluated in terms of precision, recall, and mAP. The results exhibit the better performance of YOLOx-s over YOLOx-m and YOLOx-l variants. YOLOx-s has 0.8983 and 0.8656 mAP for snow and sandstorms, respectively, while its mAP for rain and fog is 0.9509 and 0.9524, respectively. The performance of models is better for snow and foggy weather than rainy weather sandstorms. Drowning poses a significant threat, resulting in unexpected injuries and fatalities. To promote water sports activities, it is crucial to develop surveillance systems that enhance safety around pools and waterways. This paper presents an overview of recent advancements in drowning detection, with a specific focus on image processing and sensor-based methods. Furthermore, the potential of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning algorithms (MLAs), and robotics technology in this field is explored. The review examines the technological challenges, benefits, and drawbacks associated with these approaches. The findings reveal that image processing and sensor-based technologies are the most effective approaches for drowning detection systems. However, the image-processing approach requires substantial resources and sophisticated MLAs, making it costly and complex to implement. Conversely, sensor-based approaches offer practical, cost-effective, and widely applicable solutions for drowning detection. These approaches involve data transmission from the swimmer's condition to the processing unit through sensing technology, utilising both wired and wireless communication channels. Hyperspectral images (HSIs) contain abundant spectral and spatial structural information, but they are inevitably contaminated by a variety of noises during data reception and transmission, leading to image quality degradation and subsequent application hindrance. Hence, removing mixed noise from hyperspectral images is an important step in improving the performance of subsequent image processing. It is a well-established fact that the data information of hyperspectral images can be effectively represented by a global spectral low-rank subspace due to the high redundancy and correlation (RAC) in the spatial and spectral domains. Taking advantage of this property, a new algorithm based on subspace representation and nonlocal low-rank tensor decomposition is proposed to filter the mixed noise of hyperspectral images. The algorithm first obtains the subspace representation of the hyperspectral image by utilizing the spectral low-rank property and obtains the orthogonal basis and representation coefficient image (RCI). Then, the representation coefficient image is grouped and denoised using tensor decomposition and wavelet decomposition, respectively, according to the spatial nonlocal self-similarity. Afterward, the orthogonal basis and denoised representation coefficient image are optimized using the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). Finally, iterative regularization is used to update the image to obtain the final denoised hyperspectral image. Experiments on both simulated and real datasets demonstrate that the algorithm proposed in this paper is superior to related mainstream methods in both quantitative metrics and intuitive vision. Target detection has always been a hotspot in image processing/computer vision research, and small-target detection is a frequently encountered problem in the field of target detection. With the continuous innovation of target detection technology, people always hope that the detection of small targets can reach the real-time accuracy of large-target detection. In this paper, a small-target detection model based on dual-core convolutional neural networks (CNN) is proposed, which is mainly used for the intelligent detection of books in the production line of printed books. The model is mainly composed of two modules, including a region prediction module and suspicious target search module. The region prediction module uses a CNN to predict suspicious region blocks in a large context. The suspicious target search module uses a different CNN from the above to find tiny targets in the predicted region blocks. Medical image analysis forms the basis of image-guided surgery (IGS) and many of its fundamental tasks. Driven by the growing number of medical imaging modalities, the research community of medical imaging has developed methods and achieved functionality breakthroughs. However, with the overwhelming pool of information in the literature, it has become increasingly challenging for researchers to extract context-relevant information for specific applications, especially when many widely used methods exist in a variety of versions optimized for their respective application domains. By being further equipped with sophisticated three-dimensional (3D) medical image visualization and digital reality technology, medical experts could enhance their performance capabilities in IGS by multiple folds. The goal of this narrative review is to organize the key components of IGS in the aspects of medical image processing and visualization with a new perspective and insights. The literature search was conducted using mainstream academic search engines with a combination of keywords relevant to the field up until mid-2022. This survey systemically summarizes the basic, mainstream, and state-of-the-art medical image processing methods as well as how visualization technology like augmented/mixed/virtual reality (AR/MR/VR) are enhancing performance in IGS. Further, we hope that this survey will shed some light on the future of IGS in the face of challenges and opportunities for the research directions of medical image processing and visualization. Accurate prediction of the estrus period is crucial for optimizing insemination efficiency and reducing costs in animal husbandry, a vital sector for global food production. Precise estrus period determination is essential to avoid economic losses, such as milk production reductions, delayed calf births, and disqualification from government support. The proposed method integrates estrus period detection with cow identification using augmented reality (AR). It initiates deep learning-based mounting detection, followed by identifying the mounting region of interest (ROI) using YOLOv5. The ROI is then cropped with padding, and cow ID detection is executed using YOLOv5 on the cropped ROI. The system subsequently records the identified cow IDs. The proposed system accurately detects mounting behavior with 99% accuracy, identifies the ROI where mounting occurs with 98% accuracy, and detects the mounting couple with 94% accuracy. The presented paper investigates the problem of endoscopic bleeding detection in endoscopic videos in the form of a binary image classification task. A set of definitions of high-level visual features of endoscopic bleeding is introduced, which incorporates domain knowledge from the field. The high-level features are coupled with respective feature descriptors, enabling automatic capture of the features using image processing methods. Each of the proposed feature descriptors outputs a feature activation map in the form of a grayscale image. Acquired feature maps can be appended in a straightforward way to the original color channels of the input image and passed to the input of a convolutional neural network during the training and inference steps. An experimental evaluation is conducted to compare the classification ROC AUC of feature-extended convolutional neural network models with baseline models using regular color image inputs. Image segmentation is a well-known image processing task that consists of partitioning an image into homogeneous areas. It is applied to remotely sensed imagery for many problems such as land use classification and landscape changes. Recently, several hybrid remote sensing image segmentation techniques have been proposed that include metaheuristic approaches in order to increase the segmentation accuracy; however, the critical point of these approaches is the high computational complexity, which affects time and memory consumption. In order to overcome this criticality, we propose a fuzzy-based image segmentation framework implemented in a GIS-based platform for remotely sensed images; furthermore, the proposed model allows us to evaluate the reliability of the segmentation. The Fast Generalized Fuzzy c-means algorithm is implemented to segment images in order to detect local spatial relations between pixels and the Triple Center Relation validity index is used to find the optimal number of clusters. The framework elaborates the composite index to be analyzed starting by multiband remotely sensed images. For each cluster, a segmented image is obtained in which the pixel value represents, transformed into gray levels, the graph belonging to the cluster. A final thematic map is built in which the pixels are classified based on the assignment to the cluster to which they belong with the highest membership degree. In addition, the reliability of the classification is estimated by associating each class with the average of the membership degrees of the pixels assigned to it. The method was tested in the study area consisting of the south-western districts of the city of Naples (Italy) for the segmentation of composite indices maps determined by multiband remote sensing images. The segmentation results are consistent with the segmentations of the study area by morphological and urban characteristics, carried out by domain experts. Automated optical inspection (AOI) plays a pivotal role in the quality control of contact lenses, safeguarding the safety and integrity of lenses intended for both medical and cosmetic applications. As the role of computer vision in defect detection expands, our study probes its effectiveness relative to traditional methods, particularly concerning subtle and irregular defects on the lens rim. In this research study, we propose a novel algorithm designed for the precise and automated detection of rim defects in contact lenses called "CLensRimVision". This algorithm integrates a series of procedures, including image preprocessing, circle detection for identifying lens rims, polar coordinate transformation, setting defect criteria and their subsequent detection, and, finally, visualization. The method based on these criteria can be adapted either to thickness-based or area-based approaches, suiting various characteristics of the contact lens. The Celestial Object Rendering TOol (CORTO) offers a powerful solution for generating synthetic images of celestial bodies, catering to the needs of space mission design, algorithm development, and validation. Through rendering, noise modeling, hardware-in-the-loop testing, and post-processing functionalities, CORTO creates realistic scenarios. It offers a versatile and comprehensive solution for generating synthetic images of celestial bodies, aiding the development and validation of image processing and navigation algorithms for space missions. This work illustrates its functionalities in detail for the first time. The importance of a robust validation pipeline to test the tool's accuracy against real mission images using metrics like normalized cross-correlation and structural similarity is also illustrated. Image anomaly detection is a trending research topic in computer vision. The objective is to build models using available normal samples to detect various abnormal images without depending on real abnormal samples. It has high research significance and value for applications in the detection of defects in product appearance, medical image analysis, hyperspectral image processing, and other fields. This paper proposes an image anomaly detection algorithm based on feature distillation and an autoencoder structure, which uses the feature distillation structure of a dual-teacher network to train the encoder, thus suppressing the reconstruction of abnormal regions. This system also introduces an attention mechanism to highlight the detection objects, achieving effective detection of different defects in product appearance. In addition, this paper proposes a method for anomaly evaluation based on patch similarity that calculates the difference between the reconstructed image and the input image according to different regions of the image, thus improving the sensitivity and accuracy of the anomaly score. This paper conducts experiments on several datasets, and the results show that the proposed algorithm has superior performance in image anomaly detection. This article presents an integrated system that uses the capabilities of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to perform a comprehensive crop analysis, combining qualitative and quantitative evaluations for efficient agricultural management. A convolutional neural network-based model, Detectron2, serves as the foundation for detecting and segmenting objects of interest in acquired aerial images. This model was trained on a dataset prepared using the COCO format, which features a variety of annotated objects. The system architecture comprises a frontend and a backend component. The frontend facilitates user interaction and annotation of objects on multispectral images. The backend involves image loading, project management, polygon handling, and multispectral image processing. For qualitative analysis, users can delineate regions of interest using polygons, which are then subjected to analysis using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) or Optimized Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (OSAVI). For quantitative analysis, the system deploys a pre-trained model capable of object detection, allowing for the counting and localization of specific objects, with a focus on young lettuce crops. Crack disease is one of the most serious and common diseases in road detection. Traditional manual methods for measuring crack detection can no longer meet the needs of road crack detection. In previous work, the authors proposed a crack detection method for asphalt pavements based on an improved YOLOv5s model, which is a better model for detecting various types of cracks in asphalt pavements. However, most of the current research on automatic pavement crack detection is still focused on crack identification and location stages, which contributes little to practical engineering applications. Based on the shortcomings of the above work, and in order to improve its contribution to practical engineering applications, this paper proposes a method for segmenting and analyzing asphalt pavement cracks and identifying parameters based on image processing. The first step is to extract the crack profile through image grayscale, histogram equalization, segmented linear transformation, median filtering, Sauvola binarization, and the connected domain threshold method. Then, the magnification between the pixel area and the actual area of the calibration object is calculated. The second step is to extract the skeleton from the crack profile images of asphalt pavement using the Zhang–Suen thinning algorithm, followed by removing the burrs of the crack skeleton image using the connected domain threshold method. The final step is to calculate physical parameters, such as the actual area, width, segments, and length of the crack with images obtained from the crack profile and skeleton. The results show that (1) the method of local thresholding and connected domain thresholding can completely filter noise regions under the premise of retaining detailed crack region information. (2) The Zhang–Suen iterative refinement algorithm is faster in extracting the crack skeleton of asphalt pavement, retaining the foreground features of the image better, while the connected-domain thresholding method is able to eliminate the missed isolated noise. (3) In comparison to the manual calibration method, the crack parameter calculation method proposed in this paper can better complete the calculation of crack length, width, and area within an allowable margin of error. On the basis of this research, a windowing system for asphalt pavement crack detection, WSPCD1.0, was developed. Tunnel cracks are the main factors that cause damage and collapse of tunnel structures. How to detect tunnel cracks efficiently and avoid safety accidents caused by tunnel cracks effectively is a research hotspot at present. In order to meet the need for efficient detection of tunnel cracks, the tunnel crack detection method based on improved Retinex and deep learning is proposed in this paper. The tunnel crack images collected by optical imaging equipment are used to improve the contrast information of tunnel crack images using the image enhancement algorithm, and this image enhancement algorithm has the function of multi-scale Retinex decomposition with improved central filtering. An improved VGG19 network model is constructed to achieve efficient segmentation of tunnel crack images through deep learning methods and then form the segmented binary image. The Zhang–Suen fast parallel-thinning method is used to obtain the skeleton map of the single-layer pixel, and the length and width information of the tunnel cracks are obtained. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method are verified by experiments. Compared with other methods in the literature, the maximum deviation in the length of the tunnel crack is about 5 mm, and the maximum deviation in the width of the tunnel crack is about 0.8 mm. Sign language recognition, an essential interface between the hearing and deaf-mute communities, faces challenges with high false positive rates and computational costs, even with the use of advanced deep learning techniques. Our proposed solution is a stacked encoded model, combining artificial intelligence (AI) with the Internet of Things (IoT), which refines feature extraction and classification to overcome these challenges. We leverage a lightweight backbone model for preliminary feature extraction and use stacked autoencoders to further refine these features. Our approach harnesses the scalability of big data, showing notable improvement in accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and complexity analysis. Our model's effectiveness is demonstrated through testing on the ArSL2018 benchmark dataset, showcasing superior performance compared to state-of-the-art approaches. Additional validation through an ablation study with pre-trained convolutional neural network (CNN) models affirms our model's efficacy across all evaluation metrics. Dental diagnostic imaging has progressed towards the use of advanced technologies such as 3D image processing. Since multidetector computed tomography (CT) is widely available in equine clinics, CT-based anatomical 3D models, segmentations, and measurements have become clinically applicable. This study aimed to use a 3D segmentation of CT images and volumetric measurements to investigate differences in the surface area and volume of equine incisors. The 3D Slicer was used to segment single incisors of 50 horses' heads and to extract volumetric features. Axial vertical symmetry, but not horizontal, of the incisors was evidenced. The surface area and volume differed significantly between temporary and permanent incisors, allowing for easy eruption-related clustering of the CT-based 3D images with an accuracy of >0.75. The volumetric features differed partially between center, intermediate, and corner incisors, allowing for moderate location-related clustering with an accuracy of >0.69. The volumetric features of mandibular incisors' equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH) degrees were more than those for maxillary incisors; thus, the accuracy of EOTRH degree-related clustering was >0.72 for the mandibula and >0.33 for the maxilla. Fishing has provided mankind with a protein-rich source of food and labor, allowing for the development of an important industry, which has led to the overexploitation of most targeted fish species. The sustainable management of these natural resources requires effective control of fish landings and, therefore, an accurate calculation of fishing quotas. This work proposes a deep learning-based spatial-spectral method to classify five pelagic species of interest for the Chilean fishing industry, including the targeted Engraulis ringens, Merluccius gayi, and Strangomera bentincki and non-targeted Normanichthtys crockeri and Stromateus stellatus fish species. This proof-of-concept method is composed of two channels of a convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture that processes the Red–Green–Blue (RGB) images and the visible and near-infrared (VIS-NIR) reflectance spectra of each species. The classification results of the CNN model achieved over 94% in all performance metrics, outperforming other state-of-the-art techniques. Real-time compression of images with a high dynamic range into those with a low dynamic range while preserving the maximum amount of detail is still a critical technology in infrared image processing. We propose a dynamic range compression and enhancement algorithm for infrared images with local optimal contrast (DRCE-LOC). The algorithm has four steps. The first involves blocking the original image to determine the optimal stretching coefficient by using the information of the local block. In the second, the algorithm combines the original image with a low-pass filter to create the background and detailed layers, compressing the background layer with a dynamic range of adaptive gain, and enhancing the detailed layer for the visual characteristics of the human eye. Third, the original image was used as input, the compressed background layer was used as a brightness-guided image, and the local optimal stretching coefficient was used for dynamic range compression. Fourth, an 8-bit image was created (from typical 14-bit input) by merging the enhanced details and the compressed background. Implemented on FPGA, it used 2.2554 Mb of Block RAM, five dividers, and a root calculator with a total image delay of 0.018 s. The study analyzed mainstream algorithms in various scenarios (rich scenes, small targets, and indoor scenes), confirming the proposed algorithm's superiority in real-time processing, resource utilization, preservation of the image's details, and visual effects. Chinese steamed bread (CSB) is a traditional food of the Chinese nation, and the preservation of its quality and freshness during storage is very important for its industrial production. Therefore, it is necessary to study the storage characteristics of CSB. Non-destructive CT technology was utilized to characterize and visualize the microstructure of CSB during storage, and also to further study of quality changes. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional images of CSBs were obtained through X-ray scanning and 3D reconstruction. Morphological parameters of the microstructure of CSBs were acquired based on CT image using image processing methods. Additionally, commonly used physicochemical indexes (hardness, flexibility, moisture content) for the quality evaluation of CSBs were analyzed. Moreover, a correlation analysis was conducted based on the three-dimensional morphological parameters and physicochemical indexes of CSBs. The results showed that three-dimensional morphological parameters of CSBs were negatively correlated with moisture content (Pearson correlation coefficient range−0.86~−0.97) and positively correlated with hardness (Pearson correlation coefficient range−0.87~0.99). The results indicate the inspiring capability of CT in the storage quality evaluation of CSB, providing a potential analytical method for the detection of quality and freshness in the industrial production of CSB. In this paper, we present the microwave imaging of anisotropic objects by artificial intelligence technology. Since the biaxial anisotropic scatterers have different dielectric constant components in different transverse directions, the problems faced by transverse electronic (TE) polarization waves are more complex than those of transverse magnetic (TM) polarization waves. In other words, measured scattered field information can scarcely reconstruct microwave images due to the high nonlinearity characteristic of TE polarization. Therefore, we first use the dominant current scheme (DCS) and the back-propagation scheme (BPS) to compute the initial guess image. We then apply a trained convolution neural network (CNN) to regenerate the microwave image. Numerical results show that the CNN possesses a good generalization ability under limited training data, which could be favorable to deploy in image processing. Finally, we compare DCS and BPS reconstruction images for anisotropic objects by the CNN and prove that DCS is better than BPS.
