This paper proposes an automatic air-to-ground (A2G) channel model selection method based on machine learning (ML) using digital surface model (DSM) terrain data. In order to verify whether a communication network for a new non-terrestrial user service such as Urban Air Mobility (UAM) satisfies the required performance, it is necessary to perform a simulation reflecting the characteristics of the corresponding terrain environments as accurately as possible. For this simulation, A2G channel models corresponding to various terrain environments and a method of automatically classifying the terrain type of the simulation area must be provided. Many A2G channel models based on actual measurement results exist, but the practical automatic topography classification method still needs to be developed. This paper proposes the first practical automatic topography classification method using a two-step neural network-based classifier utilizing various geographic feature data as input. Since there is no open topography dataset to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed method, we built a new dataset for five topography classes that reflect the characteristics of Korea's topography, which is also a contribution of our study. The simulation results using the new data set show that the proposed ML-based method could increase the selection accuracy compared to the technique for direct classification by humans or the existing cross-correlation-based classification method. Since the proposed method utilizes the DSM data, open to the public, it can easily reflect the different terrain characteristics of each country. Therefore, the proposed method can be effectively used in the realistic performance evaluation of new non-terrestrial communication networks utilizing vast airspace such as UAM or 6G mobile communications. The wheels of railway vehicles are of paramount importance in relation to railroad operations and safety. Currently, the management of railway vehicle wheels is restricted to post-event inspections of the wheels whenever physical phenomena, such as abnormal vibrations and noise, occur during the operation of railway vehicles. To address this issue, this paper proposes a method for predicting abnormalities in railway wheels in advance and enhancing the learning and prediction performance of machine learning algorithms. Data were collected during the operation of Line 4 of the Busan Metro in South Korea by directly attaching sensors to the railway vehicles. Through the analysis of key factors in the collected data, factors that can be used for tire condition classification were derived. Additionally, through data distribution analysis and correlation analysis, factors for classifying tire conditions were identified. As a result, it was determined that the z-axis of acceleration has a significant impact, and machine learning techniques such as SVM (Linear Kernel, RBF Kernel) and Random Forest were utilized based on acceleration data to classify tire conditions into in-service and defective states. According to data from the Ministry of Employment and Labor in Korea, a significant portion of fatal accidents on construction sites occur due to collisions between construction workers and equipment, with many of these collisions being attributed to worker negligence. This study introduces a method for accurately localizing construction equipment and workers on-site, delineating areas prone to collisions as 'a danger area of a collision', and defining collision risk states. Utilizing advanced deep learning models which specialize in object detection, video footage obtained from strategically placed closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras across the construction site is analyzed. The positions of each detected object are determined using transformation or homography matrices representing the conversion relationship between a sufficiently flat reference plane and image coordinates. Additionally, 'a danger area of a collision' is proposed for evaluating equipment collision risk based on the moving equipment's speed, and the validity of this area is verified. Through this, the paper presents a system designed to preemptively identify potential collision risks, particularly when workers are located within the 'danger area of a collision', thereby mitigating accident risks on construction sites. The purpose of this paper is to study the recognition of ships and their structures to improve the safety of drone operations engaged in shore-to-ship drone delivery service. This study has developed a system that can distinguish between ships and their structures by using a convolutional neural network (CNN). First, the dataset of the Marine Traffic Management Net is described and CNN's object sensing based on the Detectron2 platform is discussed. There will also be a description of the experiment and performance. Research on autonomous driving technology is actively underway to solve the facing problems in the agricultural field. Combine harvesters used in East Asian countries, including Korea, are tracked-type vehicles. The steering control system of the tracked vehicle has different characteristics from the wheeled vehicle used in the agricultural tractor. In this paper, a dual GPS antenna-based autonomous driving system and path tracking algorithm were developed for a robot combine harvester. An α-turn-type work path generation algorithm and a path tracking algorithm were developed. The developed system and algorithm were verified through experiments using actual combine harvesters. The experiment consisted of an experiment with harvesting work and an experiment without harvesting work. In the experiment without harvesting work, an error of 0.052 m occurred during working driving and 0.207 m during turning driving. In the experiment where the harvesting work was carried out, an error of 0.038 m occurred during work driving and 0.195 m during turning driving. As a result of comparing the non-work area and driving time to the results of manual driving, the self-driving experiment with harvesting work showed an efficiency of 76.7%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rectification of vehicle plate images helps to improve the accuracy of license-plate recognition (LPR). It is a perspective-transformation process to project images as if taken from the front geometrically. To obtain the projection matrix, we require the (x, y) coordinates of four corner positions of plates in images. In this paper, we consider the problem of unsupervised domain adaptation for corner detection in plate images. We trained a model with plate images of one country, the source domain, and applied a domain adaptation scheme so that the model is able to work well on the plates of a different country, the target domain. For this study, we created a dataset of 22,096 Korea plate images with corner labels, which are source domain, and 6762 Philippines, which are target domain. To address this problem, we propose a heatmap-based corner-detection model, which outperforms existing scalar-regression methods, and an image classifier for mixed image of source and target images for domain adaptation. In this paper, we propose a methodology for calculating the necessary spectrum requirements of aeronautical mobile airport communication system (AeroMACS) to provide various airport communication services. To accurately calculate the spectrum requirement, it is necessary to evaluate the AeroMACS traffic demand of the peak time and statistical data on the packet traffic generated at the airport. Because there is no AeroMACS traffic model and real trace data, we have developed the AeroMACS traffic simulator based on the report of Single European Sky Air Traffic Management Research (SESAR). To calculate the spectrum requirements, the AeroMACS traffic simulator is combined with the methodology of ITU-R M.1768-1. The developed traffic simulator reflects AeroMACS traffic priorities and can generate the required traffic according to its location in the airport. We observed the spectrum requirement by changing the number of sectors and the spectral efficiency. To show the feasibility of our methodology, we applied it to the case of Incheon International Airport in Korea. Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) has posed a serious threat to the lives and health of the majority of people worldwide. Since the early days of the outbreak, South Korea's government and citizens have made persistent efforts to provide effective prevention against further spread of the disease. In particular, the participation of individual citizens in complying with the necessary code of conduct to prevent spread of the infection, through measures such as social distancing and mask wearing, is as instrumental as the geographical tracking of the trajectory of the infected. In this paper, we propose an activity recognition method based on a wristband equipped with an IR array and inertial measurement unit (IMU) to detect individual compliance with codes of personal hygiene management, such as mask wearing, which are recommended to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. The results of activity recognition were comparatively analyzed by applying conventional machine learning algorithms and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to the IMU time series and IR array thermal images collected from 25 subjects. When CNN and 24 × 32 thermal images were used, 97.8% accuracy was achieved (best performance), and when 6 × 8 low-resolution thermal images were used, similar performance with 97.1% accuracy was obtained. In the case of using IMU, the performance of activity recognition was lower than that obtained with the IR array, but an accuracy of 93% was achieved even in the case of applying machine learning algorithms, indicating that it is more suitable for wearable devices with low computational capability. The recent large-scale fire incidents on construction sites in South Korea have highlighted the need for computer vision technology to detect fire risks before an actual occurrence of fire. This study developed a proactive fire risk detection system by detecting the coexistence of an ignition source (sparks) and a combustible material (urethane foam or Styrofoam) using object detection on images from a surveillance camera. Statistical analysis was carried out on fire incidences on construction sites in South Korea to provide insight into the cause of the large-scale fire incidents. Labeling approaches were discussed to improve the performance of the object detectors for sparks and urethane foams. Detecting ignition sources and combustible materials at a distance was discussed in order to improve the performance for long-distance objects. Two candidate deep learning models, Yolov5 and EfficientDet, were compared in their performance. It was found that Yolov5 showed slightly higher mAP performances: Yolov5 models showed mAPs from 87% to 90% and EfficientDet models showed mAPs from 82% to 87%, depending on the complexity of the model. Vessel traffic volume and vessel traffic service (VTS) operator workloads are increasing with the expansion of global maritime trade, contributing to marine accidents by causing difficulties in providing timely services. Therefore, it is essential to have sufficient VTS operators considering the vessel traffic volume and near-miss cases. However, no quantitative method for determining the optimal number of workstations, which is necessary for calculating the VTS operator staffing level, has yet been proposed. This paper proposes a new, microscopic approach for calculating the number of workstations from vessel trajectories and voice recording communication data between VTS operators and navigators. The vessel trajectory data are preprocessed to interpolate different intervals. The proposed method consists of three modules: Information services, navigational assistance services, and traffic organization service. The developed model was applied to the Yeosu VTS in Korea. Another workstation should be added to the current workstation based on the proposed method. The results showed that even without annual statistical data, a reasonable VTS operator staffing level could be calculated. The proposed approach helps prevent vessel accidents by providing timely services even if the vessel traffic is congested if VTS operators are deployed to a sufficient number of workstations. An Extended Line Map (ELM)-based precise vehicle localization method is proposed in this paper, and is implemented using 3D Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR). A binary occupancy grid map in which grids for road marking or vertical structures have a value of 1 and the rest have a value of 0 was created using the reflectivity and distance data of the 3D LIDAR. From the map, lines were detected using a Hough transform. After the detected lines were converted into the node and link forms, they were stored as a map. This map is called an extended line map, of which data size is extremely small (134 KB/km). The ELM-based localization is performed through correlation matching. The ELM is converted back into an occupancy grid map and matched to the map generated using the current 3D LIDAR. In this instance, a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) was applied as the correlation matching method, and the matching time was approximately 78 ms (based on MATLAB). The experiment was carried out in the Gangnam area of Seoul, South Korea. The traveling distance was approximately 4.2 km, and the maximum traveling speed was approximately 80 km/h. In this study, we propose an algorithm to improve the accuracy of tiny object segmentation for precise pothole detection on asphalt pavements. The approach comprises a three-step process: MOED, VAPOR, and Exception Processing, designed to extract pothole edges, validate the results, and manage detected abnormalities. The proposed algorithm addresses the limitations of previous methods and offers several advantages, including wider coverage. We experimentally evaluated the performance of the proposed algorithm by filming roads in various regions of South Korea using a UAV at high altitudes of 30–70 m. The results show that our algorithm outperforms previous methods in terms of instance segmentation performance for small objects such as potholes. There is an increasing need for capable models in the forecast of the output of solar photovoltaic panels. These models are vital for optimizing the performance and maintenance of PV systems. There is also a shortage of studies on forecasts of the output power of solar photovoltaics sites in the absence of meteorological data. Unlike common methods, this study explores numerous machine learning algorithms for forecasting the output of solar photovoltaic panels in the absence of weather data such as temperature, humidity and wind speed, which are often used when forecasting the output of solar PV panels. The considered models include Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU), Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) and Transformer. These models were used with the data collected from 50 different solar photo voltaic sites in South Korea, which consist of readings of the output of each of the sites collected at regular intervals. This study focuses on obtaining multistep forecasts for the multi-in multi-out, multi-in uni-out and uni-in uni-out settings. Detailed experimentation was carried out in each of these settings. Authorities and policymakers in Korea have recently prioritized improving fire prevention and emergency response. Governments seek to enhance community safety for residents by constructing automated fire detection and identification systems. This study examined the efficacy of YOLOv6, a system for object identification running on an NVIDIA GPU platform, to identify fire-related items. Using metrics such as object identification speed, accuracy research, and time-sensitive real-world applications, we analyzed the influence of YOLOv6 on fire detection and identification efforts in Korea. We conducted trials using a fire dataset comprising 4000 photos collected through Google, YouTube, and other resources to evaluate the viability of YOLOv6 in fire recognition and detection tasks. According to the findings, YOLOv6's object identification performance was 0.98, with a typical recall of 0.96 and a precision of 0.83. The system achieved an MAE of 0.302%. These findings suggest that YOLOv6 is an effective technique for detecting and identifying fire-related items in photos in Korea. Multi-class object recognition using random forests, k-nearest neighbors, support vector, logistic regression, naive Bayes, and XGBoost was performed on the SFSC data to evaluate the system's capacity to identify fire-related objects. The results demonstrate that for fire-related objects, XGBoost achieved the highest object identification accuracy, with values of 0.717 and 0.767. This was followed by random forest, with values of 0.468 and 0.510. Finally, we tested YOLOv6 in a simulated fire evacuation scenario to gauge its practicality in emergencies. The results show that YOLOv6 can accurately identify fire-related items in real time within a response time of 0.66 s. Therefore, YOLOv6 is a viable option for fire detection and recognition in Korea. The XGBoost classifier provides the highest accuracy when attempting to identify objects, achieving remarkable results. Furthermore, the system accurately identifies fire-related objects while they are being detected in real-time. This manuscript presents a self-interferometric phase analysis technique for sea surface observation using a single scatterometer system. The self-interferometric phase is proposed to complement the imprecise analysis results due to the very meager signal strength measured at a high incident angle of more than 30°, which is a vulnerability of the existing analysis method using the Doppler frequency based on the backscattered signal strength. Moreover, compared to conventional interferometry, it is characterized by the phase-based analysis using consecutive signals from a single scatterometer system without any auxiliary system or channel. To apply the interferometric signal process on the moving sea surface observation, it is necessary to secure a reference target; however, this is hard to solve in practice. Hence, we adopted the back-projection algorithm to project the radar signals onto a fixed reference position above the sea surface, where the theoretical model for extracting the self-interferometric phase was derived from the radar-received signal model applying the back-projection algorithm. The observation performance of the proposed method was verified using the raw data collected at the Ieodo Ocean Research Station in Republic of Korea. In the observation result for wind velocity at the high incident angles of 40° and 50°, the self-interferometric phase analysis technique shows a better performance of a correlation coefficient of more than about 0.779 and an RMSE (root-mean-square error) of about 1.69 m/s compared to the existing method of a correlation coefficient of less than 0.62 and RMSE of more than 2.46 m/s. Wearable devices capable of measuring gait parameters may provide a means to more economical gait analysis compared to conventional equipment comprising of a motion capture system and a forced treadmill. Beflex Coach (Beflex, Republic of Korea) is one such device but worn on the ear as Bluetooth earphones, unlike other wearables worn on the wrist, feet, or torso. In this study, the validity of the device was examined against a motion capture system and a forced treadmill for walking and running parameters. Five walking parameters (cadence, single support time, double support time, vertical oscillation (VO), and instantaneous vertical loading rate (IVLR)) and six running parameters (cadence, stance time, flight time, peak force, VO, and IVLR) were studied. Twenty young adults participated in walking or running on a forced treadmill at different speeds (walking: 0.8, 1.25, and 1.7 m/s for walking; running: 2, 2.5, and 3 m/s) while the two systems operated simultaneously. As a result, all parameters showed excellent associations (ICC > 0.75) and good agreements in Bland–Altman plots. This study presents the architectural design and implementation of a multi-RAT gateway (MRGW) supporting dual satellite and terrestrial connectivity that enables moving maritime vessels, such as autonomous surface ships, to be connected to multiple radio access networks in the maritime communication environment. We developed an MRGW combining LTE and very-small-aperture terminal (VSAT) access networks to realize access traffic steering, switching, and splitting functionalities between them. In addition, we developed communication interfaces between the MRGW and end-devices connecting to their corresponding radio access networks, as well as between the MRGW and the digital bridge system of an autonomous surface ship, enabling the MRGW to collect wireless channel information from each RAT end-device and provide the collected data to the digital bridge system to determine the optimal navigation route for the autonomous surface ship. Experiments on the MRGW with LTE and VSAT end-devices are conducted at sea near Ulsan city and the Kumsan satellite service center in Korea. Through validation experiments on a real maritime communication testbed, we demonstrate the feasibility of future maritime communication technologies capable of providing the minimum performance necessary for autonomous surface ships or digitized aids to navigation (A to N) systems. In terms of electric vehicles (EVs), electric kickboards are crucial elements of smart transportation networks for short-distance travel that is risk-free, economical, and environmentally friendly. Forecasting the daily demand can improve the local service provider's access to information and help them manage their short-term supply more effectively. This study developed the forecasting model using real-time data and weather information from Jeju Island, South Korea. Cluster analysis under the rental pattern of the electric kickboard is a component of the forecasting processes. We cannot achieve noticeable results at first because of the low amount of training data. We require a lot of data to produce a solid prediction result. For the sake of the subsequent experimental procedure, we created synthetic time-series data using a generative adversarial networks (GAN) approach and combined the synthetic data with the original data. The outcomes have shown how the GAN-based synthetic data generation approach has the potential to enhance prediction accuracy. We employ an ensemble model to improve prediction results that cannot be achieved using a single regressor model. It is a weighted combination of several base regression models to one meta-regressor. To anticipate the daily demand in this study, we create an ensemble model by merging three separate base machine learning algorithms, namely CatBoost, Random Forest (RF), and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost). The effectiveness of the suggested strategies was assessed using some evaluation indicators. The forecasting outcomes demonstrate that mixing synthetic data with original data improves the robustness of daily demand forecasting and outperforms other models by generating more agreeable values for suggested assessment measures. Although various linear log-distance path loss models have been developed for wireless sensor networks, advanced models are required to more accurately and flexibly represent the path loss for complex environments. This paper proposes a machine learning framework for modeling path loss using a combination of three key techniques: artificial neural network (ANN)-based multi-dimensional regression, Gaussian process-based variance analysis, and principle component analysis (PCA)-aided feature selection. In general, the measured path loss dataset comprises multiple features such as distance, antenna height, etc. First, PCA is adopted to reduce the number of features of the dataset and simplify the learning model accordingly. ANN then learns the path loss structure from the dataset with reduced dimension, and Gaussian process learns the shadowing effect. Path loss data measured in a suburban area in Korea are employed. We observe that the proposed combined path loss and shadowing model is more accurate and flexible compared to the conventional linear path loss plus log-normal shadowing model. Economic and social progress in the Republic of Korea resulted in an increased standard of living, which subsequently produced more waste. The Korean government implemented a volume-based trash disposal system that may modify waste disposal characteristics to handle vast volumes of waste efficiently. However, the inconvenience of having to purchase standard garbage bags on one's own led to passive participation by citizens and instances of illegally dumping waste in non-standard plastic bags. As a result, there is a need for the development of automatic detection and reporting of illegal acts of garbage dumping. To achieve this, we suggest a system for tracking unlawful rubbish disposal that is based on deep neural networks. The proposed monitoring approach obtains the articulation points (joints) of a dumper through OpenPose and identifies the type of garbage bag through the object detection model, You Only Look Once (YOLO), to determine the distance of the dumper's wrist to the garbage bag and decide whether it is illegal dumping. Additionally, we introduced a method of tracking the IDs issued to the waste bags using the multi-object tracking (MOT) model to reduce the false detection of illegal dumping. To evaluate the efficacy of the proposed illegal dumping monitoring system, we compared it with the other systems based on behavior recognition. As a result, it was validated that the suggested approach had a higher degree of accuracy and a lower percentage of false alarms, making it useful for a variety of upcoming applications. Owing to the continuous increase in the damage to farms due to wild animals' destruction of crops in South Korea, various methods have been proposed to resolve these issues, such as installing electric fences and using warning lamps or ultrasonic waves. Recently, new methods have been attempted by applying deep learning-based object-detection techniques to a robot. However, for effective training of a deep learning-based object-detection model, overfitting or biased training should be avoided; furthermore, a huge number of datasets are required. In particular, establishing a training dataset for specific wild animals requires considerable time and labor. Therefore, this study proposes an Extract–Append data augmentation method where specific objects are extracted from a limited number of images via semantic segmentation and corresponding objects are appended to numerous arbitrary background images. Thus, the study aimed to improve the model's detection performance by generating a rich dataset on wild animals with various background images, particularly images of water deer and wild boar, which are currently causing the most problematic social issues. The comparison between the object detector trained using the proposed Extract–Append technique and that trained using the existing data augmentation techniques showed that the mean Average Precision (mAP) improved by ≥2.2%. Moreover, further improvement in detection performance of the deep learning-based object-detection model can be expected as the proposed technique can solve the issue of the lack of specific data that are difficult to obtain. Earthquakes cause liquefaction, which disturbs the design phase during the building construction process. The potential of earthquake-induced liquefaction was estimated initially based on analytical and numerical methods. The conventional methods face problems in providing empirical formulations in the presence of uncertainties. Accordingly, machine learning (ML) algorithms were implemented to predict the liquefaction potential. Although the ML models perform well with the specific liquefaction dataset, they fail to produce accurate results when used on other datasets. This study proposes a stacked generalization model (SGM), constructed by aggregating algorithms with the best performances, such as the multilayer perceptron regressor (MLPR), support vector regression (SVR), and linear regressor, to build an efficient prediction model to estimate the potential of earthquake-induced liquefaction on settlements. The dataset from the Korean Geotechnical Information database system and the standard penetration test conducted on the 2016 Pohang earthquake in South Korea were used. The model performance was evaluated by using the R2 score, mean-square error (MSE), standard deviation, covariance, and root-MSE. Model validation was performed to compare the performance of the proposed SGM with SVR and MLPR models. The proposed SGM yielded the best performance compared with those of the other base models. The cadastral system provides land ownership information by registering and representing land boundaries on a map. The current cadastral system in Korea, however, focuses mainly on the management of 2D land-surface boundaries. It is not yet possible to provide efficient or reliable land administration, as this 2D system cannot support or manage land information on 3D properties (including architectures and civil infrastructures) for both above-ground and underground facilities. A geometrical model of the 3D parcel, therefore, is required for registration of 3D properties. This paper, considering the role of the cadastral system, proposes a framework for a 3D underground cadastral system that can register various types of 3D underground properties using indoor mapping for as-built Building Information Modeling (BIM). The implementation consists of four phases: (1) geometric modeling of a real underground infrastructure using terrestrial laser scanning data; (2) implementation of as-built BIM based on geometric modeling results; (3) accuracy assessment for created as-built BIM using reference points acquired by total station; and (4) creation of three types of 3D underground cadastral map to represent underground properties. The experimental results, based on indoor mapping for as-built BIM, show that the proposed framework for a 3D underground cadastral system is able to register the rights, responsibilities, and restrictions corresponding to the 3D underground properties. In this way, clearly identifying the underground physical situation enables more reliable and effective decision-making in all aspects of the national land administration system. Countries require measures to prevent food fraud, such as forgery of certificates or content change during production, which can occur throughout the supply chain, even if they have a certification system for quality food management. Therefore, there are recent cases of the introduction of blockchain tokens for quality and supply chain management; however, there are difficulties in introducing tokens in food fields, such as forest and agricultural products. Recently, the number of users and the demand for live-streaming services have increased. This has exponentially increased the traffic to such services, and live-streaming service platforms in Korea use a grid computing system that distributes traffic to users and reduces traffic loads. However, ensuring security with a grid computing system is difficult because the system exchanges general user traffic in a peer-to-peer (P2P) manner instead of receiving data from an authenticated server. Therefore, in this study, to explore the vulnerabilities of a grid computing system, we investigated a vulnerability discovery framework that involves a three-step analysis process and eight detailed activities. Four types of zero-day vulnerabilities, namely video stealing, information disclosure, denial of service, and remote code execution, were derived by analyzing a live-streaming platform in Korea, as a representative service, using grid computing. The safety of urban transportation systems is considered a public health issue worldwide, and many researchers have contributed to improving it. Connected automated vehicles (CAVs) and cooperative intelligent transportation systems (C-ITSs) are considered solutions to ensure the safety of urban transportation systems using various sensors and communication devices. However, realizing a data flow framework, including data collection, data transmission, and data processing, in South Korea is challenging, as CAVs produce a massive amount of data every minute, which cannot be transmitted via existing communication networks. Thus, raw data must be sampled and transmitted to the server for further processing. The data acquired must be highly accurate to ensure the safety of the different agents in C-ITS. On the other hand, raw data must be reduced through sampling to ensure transmission using existing communication systems. Thus, in this study, C-ITS architecture and data flow are designed, including messages and protocols for the safety monitoring system of CAVs, and the optimal sampling interval determined for data transmission while considering the trade-off between communication efficiency and accuracy of the safety performance indicators. Three safety performance indicators were introduced: severe deceleration, lateral position variance, and inverse time to collision. A field test was conducted to collect data from various sensors installed in the CAV, determining the optimal sampling interval. In addition, the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test was conducted to ensure statistical consistency between the sampled and raw datasets. The effects of the sampling interval on message delay, data accuracy, and communication efficiency in terms of the data compression ratio were analyzed. Construction signs alert drivers to the dangers of abnormally blocked roads. In the case of autonomous vehicles, construction signs should be detected automatically to prevent accidents. One might think that we can accomplish the goal easily using the popular deep-learning-based detectors, but it is not the case. To train the deep learning detectors to detect construction signs, we need a large amount of training images which contain construction signs. However, collecting training images including construction signs is very difficult in the real world because construction events do not occur frequently. To make matters worse, the construction signs might have dozens of different construction signs (i.e., contents). To address this problem, we propose a new method named content swapping. Our content swapping divides a construction sign into two parts: the board and the frame. Content swapping generates numerous synthetic construction signs by combining the board images (i.e., contents) taken from the in-domain images and the frames (i.e., geometric shapes) taken from the out-domain images. The generated synthetic construction signs are then added to the background road images via the cut-and-paste mechanism, increasing the number of training images. Furthermore, three fine-tuning methods regarding the region, size, and color of the construction signs are developed to make the generated training images look more realistic. To validate our approach, we applied our method to real-world images captured in South Korea. Finally, we achieve an average precision (AP50) score of 84.98%, which surpasses that of the off-the-shelf method by 9.15%. Full experimental results are available online as a supplemental video. Crosswalks present a major threat to pedestrians, but we lack dense behavioral data to investigate the risks they face. One of the breakthroughs is to analyze potential risky behaviors of the road users (e.g., near-miss collision), which can provide clues to take actions such as deployment of additional safety infrastructures. In order to capture these subtle potential risky situations and behaviors, the use of vision sensors makes it easier to study and analyze potential traffic risks. In this study, we introduce a new approach to obtain the potential risky behaviors of vehicles and pedestrians from CCTV cameras deployed on the roads. This study has three novel contributions: (1) recasting CCTV cameras for surveillance to contribute to the study of the crossing environment; (2) creating one sequential process from partitioning video to extracting their behavioral features; and (3) analyzing the extracted behavioral features and clarifying the interactive moving patterns by the crossing environment. These kinds of data are the foundation for understanding road users' risky behaviors, and further support decision makers for their efficient decisions in improving and making a safer road environment. Biological agents used in biological warfare or bioterrorism are also present in bioaerosols. Prompt identification of a biological weapon and its characteristics is necessary. Herein, we optimized an environmentally adaptive detection algorithm that can better reflect changes in the complex South Korean environment than the current models. The algorithm distinguished between normal and biological particles using a laser-induced fluorescence-based biological particle detector capable of real-time measurements and size classification. We ensured that the algorithm operated with minimal false alarms in any environment by training based on experimental data acquired from an area where rainfall, snow, fog and mist, Asian dust, and water waves on the beach occur. To prevent time and money wastage due to false alarms, the detection performance for each level of sensitivity was examined to enable the selection of multiple sensitivities according to the background, and the appropriate level of sensitivity for the climate was determined. The basic sensitivity was set more conservatively than before, with a 3% alarm rate at 20 agent-containing particles per liter of air (ACPLA) and a 100% alarm rate at 63 ACPLA. Time reversal processing (TRP) exploits signal diversity methods, namely, spatial, temporal, beam, and frequency, to mitigate the distortion caused by multipath time delay. Using the same experimental data, this study compares the performance of communication utilizing TRP based on various diversity methods. In October 2018, the biomimetic long-range acoustic communication experiment 2018 (BLAC18) was conducted in the East Sea, east of Pohang, Korea. During the experiment, communication signals modulated by binary phase-shift keying were transmitted over a range of 60 km, and a vertical line array of 16 elements (with an aperture of ∼42 m) was utilized. The BLAC18 analysis showed that the performance of each diversity method depends on the order of diversity. When the order of diversity was one, the beam diversity method with the beamformed signal yielded the best performance. With the technical growth and the reduction of deployment cost for distributed energy resources (DERs), such as solar photovoltaic (PV), energy trading has been recently encouraged to energy consumers, which can sell energy from their own energy storage system (ESS). Meanwhile, due to the unprecedented rise of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, some countries (e.g., Republic of Korea and India) have mandated using a renewable energy certificate (REC) in energy trading markets. In this paper, we propose an energy broker model to boost energy trading between the existing power grid and energy consumers. In particular, to maximize the profits of energy consumers and the energy provider, the proposed energy broker is in charge of deciding the optimal demand and dynamic price of energy in an REC-based energy trading market. In this solution, the smart agents (e.g., IoT intelligent devices) of consumers exchange energy trading associated information, including the amount of energy generation, price and REC. For deciding the optimal demand and dynamic pricing, we formulate convex optimization problems using dual decomposition. Through a numerical simulation analysis, we compare the performance of the proposed dynamic pricing strategy with the conventional pricing strategies. Herein, state-of-the-art research advances in South Korea regarding the development of chemical sensing materials and fully integrated Internet of Things (IoT) sensing platforms were comprehensively reviewed for verifying the applicability of such sensing systems in point-of-care testing (POCT). Various organic/inorganic nanomaterials were synthesized and characterized to understand their fundamental chemical sensing mechanisms upon exposure to target analytes. Moreover, the applicability of nanomaterials integrated with IoT-based signal transducers for the real-time and on-site analysis of chemical species was verified. In this review, we focused on the development of noble nanostructures and signal transduction techniques for use in IoT sensing platforms, and based on their applications, such systems were classified into gas sensors, ion sensors, and biosensors. A future perspective for the development of chemical sensors was discussed for application to next-generation POCT systems that facilitate rapid and multiplexed screening of various analytes. Accurate regional classification of highways is a critical prerequisite to implement a tailored safety assessment. However, there has been inadequate research on objective classification considering traffic flow characteristics for highway safety assessment purposes. We propose an objective and easily applicable classification method that considers the administrative divisions of South Korea. We evaluated the feasibility of this method through various theoretical analysis techniques using the data collected from 536 permanent traffic volume counting stations for the national highways in South Korea in 2019. The ratio of the annual average hourly traffic volume to the annual average daily traffic was used as the explanatory variable. The corresponding results of factor and cluster analyses with this ratio showed a 61% concordance with the urban, suburban, and rural areas classified by the administrative divisions. The results of two-sample goodness-of-fit tests also confirmed that the difference in the three distributions of hourly volume ratios was statistically significant. The results of this study can help enhance highway safety and facilitate the development and application of more appropriate highway safety assessment tools, such as Road Assessment Programs or crash prediction models, for specific regions using the proposed method. This review presents the results of cutting-edge research on chemiresistive gas sensors in Korea with a focus on the research activities of the laboratories of Professors Sang Sub Kim and Hyoun Woo Kim. The advances in the synthesis techniques and various strategies to enhance the gas-sensing performances of metal-oxide-, sulfide-, and polymer-based nanomaterials are described. In particular, the gas-sensing characteristics of different types of sensors reported in recent years, including core–shell, self-heated, irradiated, flexible, Si-based, glass, and metal–organic framework sensors, have been reviewed. The most crucial achievements include the optimization of shell thickness in core–shell gas sensors, decrease in applied voltage in self-heated gas sensors to less than 5 V, optimization of irradiation dose to achieve the highest response to gases, and the design of selective and highly flexible gas sensors-based WS2 nanosheets. The underlying sensing mechanisms are discussed in detail. The indoor application of wave propagation in the 5G network is essential to fulfill the increasing demands of network access in an indoor environment. This study investigated the wave propagation properties of line-of-sight (LOS) links at two long corridors of Chosun University (CU). We chose wave propagation measurements at 3.7 and 28 GHz, since 3.7 GHz is the closest to the roll-out frequency band of 3.5 GHz in South Korea and 28 GHz is next allocated frequency band for Korean telcos. In addition, 28 GHz is the promising millimeter band adopted by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for the 5G network. Thus, the 5G network can use 3.7 and 28 GHz frequencies to achieve the spectrum required for its roll-out frequency band. The results observed were applied to simulate the path loss of the LOS links at extended indoor corridor environments. The minimum mean square error (MMSE) approach was used to evaluate the distance and frequency-dependent optimized coefficients of the close-in (CI) model with a frequency-weighted path loss exponent (CIF), floating-intercept (FI), and alpha–beta–gamma (ABG) models. Automatic meter infrastructure (AMI) systems using remote metering are being widely used to utilize water resources efficiently and minimize non-revenue water. We propose a convolutional neural network-long short-term memory network (CNN-LSTM)-based solution that can predict faulty remote water meter reading (RWMR) devices by analyzing approximately 2,850,000 AMI data collected from 2762 customers over 360 days in a small-sized city in South Korea. The AMI data used in this study is a challenging, highly unbalanced real-world dataset with limited features. First, we perform extensive preprocessing steps and extract meaningful features for handling this challenging dataset with limited features. Next, we select important features that have a higher influence on the classifier using a recursive feature elimination method. Finally, we apply the CNN-LSTM model for predicting faulty RWMR devices. We also propose an efficient training method for ML models to learn the unbalanced real-world AMI dataset. A cost-effective threshold for evaluating the performance of ML models is proposed by considering the mispredictions of ML models as well as the cost. Edge intelligence (EI) has received a lot of interest because it can reduce latency, increase efficiency, and preserve privacy. More significantly, as the Internet of Things (IoT) has proliferated, billions of portable and embedded devices have been interconnected, producing zillions of gigabytes on edge networks. Thus, there is an immediate need to push AI (artificial intelligence) breakthroughs within edge networks to achieve the full promise of edge data analytics. EI solutions have supported digital technology workloads and applications from the infrastructure level to edge networks; however, there are still many challenges with the heterogeneity of computational capabilities and the spread of information sources. We propose a novel event-driven deep-learning framework, called EDL-EI (event-driven deep learning for edge intelligence), via the design of a novel event model by defining events using correlation analysis with multiple sensors in real-world settings and incorporating multi-sensor fusion techniques, a transformation method for sensor streams into images, and lightweight 2-dimensional convolutional neural network (CNN) models. To demonstrate the feasibility of the EDL-EI framework, we presented an IoT-based prototype system that we developed with multiple sensors and edge devices. To verify the proposed framework, we have a case study of air-quality scenarios based on the benchmark data provided by the USA Environmental Protection Agency for the most polluted cities in South Korea and China. We have obtained outstanding predictive accuracy (97.65% and 97.19%) from two deep-learning models on the cities' air-quality patterns. The prediction of taxi demand service has become a recently attractive area of research along with large-scale and potential applications in the intelligent transportation system. The demand process is divided into two main parts: Picking-up and dropping-off demand based on passenger habit. Taxi demand prediction is a great concept for drivers and passengers, and is designed platforms for ride-hailing and municipal managers. The majority of research has focused on forecasting the pick-up part of demand service and specifying the interconnection of spatial and temporal correlations. In this study, the main focus is to overcome the access point of non-registered users for having fake transactions using taxi services and predicting taxi demand pick-up and drop-off information. The integration of machine learning techniques and blockchain framework is considered a possible solution for this problem. The blockchain technique was selected as an effective technique for protecting and controlling the real-time system. Historical data analysis was processed by extracting the three higher related sections for the intervening time, namely closeness and trend. Next, the pick-up and drop-off taxi prediction task was processed based on constructing the components of multi-task learning and spatiotemporal feature extraction. The combination of feature embedding performance and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) obtain the pick-up and drop-off correlation by fusing the historical data spatiotemporal features. Finally, the taxi demand pick-up and drop-off prediction were processed based on the combination of the external factors. We propose a magnetometer system fitted on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV, or drone) and a data-processing method for detecting metal antipersonnel landmines (M16) in the demilitarized zone (DMZ) in Korea, which is an undeveloped natural environment. The performance of the laser altimeter was improved so that the drone could fly at a low and stable altitude, even in a natural environment with dust and bushes, and a magnetometer was installed on a pendulum to minimize the effects of magnetic noise and vibration from the drone. At a flight altitude of 1 m, the criterion for M16 is 5 nT. Simple low-pass filtering eliminates magnetic swing noise due to pendulum motion, and the moving average method eliminates changes related to the heading of the magnetometer. Magnetic exploration was conducted in an actual mine-removal area near the DMZ in Korea, with nine magnetic anomalies of more than 5 nT detected and a variety of metallic substances found within a 1-m radius of each detection site. The proposed UAV-based landmine detection system is expected to reduce risk to detection personnel and shorten the landmine-detection period by providing accurate scientific information about the detection area prior to military landmine-detection efforts. This study describes the development of a landslide monitoring system for the purpose of reducing damages caused by landslides in natural terrain. The system was developed to analyze the effects of landslide-inducing rainfall and the behavior of slopes through 12 monitoring stations that are distributed across eight national parks in Korea. Several sensors and a data acquisition equipment to monitor landslide were installed in each station. The composition of the system and its operating program were designed to efficiently manage the sizeable amounts of real-time monitoring data that are collected from the various stations. To test the potential of the developed system for reliable landslide hazard evaluations, data measured over a five-year period by the two monitoring stations in Jirisan National Park were analyzed. Subsequently, the suction stress of the soil over the monitoring period was calculated by applying laboratory test result of the geotechnical and unsaturated soil properties in the analysis domain area. The infinite slope stability analysis combined with an effective stress concept based on the suction stress was applied to calculate the factor of safety. This method also enabled the temporal and quantitative evaluation of slope stability in natural terrain. In addition, based on the monitoring and slope stability analysis results, an analysis for the spatial classification of landslide hazards was conducted. An integrated smart home system (ISHS) is an effective way to improve the quality of life of the elderly. The elderly's willingness is essential to adopt an ISHS; to the best of our knowledge, no study has investigated the elderly's perception of ISHS. Consequently, this study aims to investigate the elderly's perception of the ISHS by comprehensively evaluating its possible benefits and negative responses. A set of sensors required for an ISHS was determined, and interviews were designed based on four factors: perceived comfort, perceived usability, perceived privacy, and perceived benefit. Subsequently, technological trials of the sensor-set followed by two focus group interviews were conducted on nine independently living elderly participants at a senior welfare center in South Korea. Consistent with previous studies, the results of this investigation indicate that elderly participants elicited negative responses regarding usability complexity, and discomfort to daily activities. Despite such negative responses, after acquiring enough awareness about the ISHS's benefits, the elderly acknowledged its necessity and showed a high level of willingness. Furthermore, these results indicate that for a better adoption of an ISHS, sufficient awareness regarding its benefits and development of elderly-friendly smart home sensors that minimize negative responses are required. Weather is affected by a complex interplay of factors, including topography, location, and time. For the prediction of temperature in Korea, it is necessary to use data from multiple regions. To this end, we investigate the use of deep neural-network-based temperature prediction model time-series weather data obtained from an automatic weather station and image data from a regional data assimilation and prediction system (RDAPS). To accommodate such different types of data into a single model, a bidirectional long short-term memory (BLSTM) model and a convolutional neural network (CNN) model are chosen to represent the features from the time-series observed data and the RDAPS image data. The two types of features are combined to produce temperature predictions for up to 14 days in the future. The performance of the proposed temperature prediction model is evaluated by objective measures, including the root mean squared error and mean bias error. The experiments demonstrated that the proposed model combining both the observed and RDAPS image data is better in all performance measures for all prediction periods compared with the BLSTM-based model using observed data and the CNN-BLSTM-based model using RDAPS image data alone. Malware detection of non-executables has recently been drawing much attention because ordinary users are vulnerable to such malware. Hangul Word Processor (HWP) is software for editing non-executable text files and is widely used in South Korea. New malware for HWP files continues to appear because of the circumstances between South Korea and North Korea. There have been various studies to solve this problem, but most of them are limited because they require a large amount of effort to define features based on expert knowledge. In this study, we designed a convolutional neural network to detect malware within HWP files. Our proposed model takes a raw byte stream as input and predicts whether it contains malicious actions or not. To incorporate highly variable lengths of HWP byte streams, we propose a new padding method and a spatial pyramid average pooling layer. As the occurrence of earthquakes is increasing in South Korea, the earthquake early warning (EEW) system becomes indispensable for the protection of high-speed railways. Although the importance of EEW system has been increasing, the number of installed seismic accelerometers in South Korea is not sufficient to provide rapid information. This study uses a stochastic signal analysis technique to utilize the smartphone sensors for the rapid EEW system. From the train vibration data from the low fidelity on-board accelerometer, the virtual earthquake detection data in the train by smartphone sensor has been constructed. To analyze the stochastic characteristics of the constructed data, the short time Fourier transform (STFT) approach has been applied. The study's overall objective is to offer stochastic approaches that provide effective analysis of the low fidelity sensor data, such as smartphone sensor data, for the rapid EEW system. Over the past few years, solar power has significantly increased in popularity as a renewable energy. In the context of electricity generation, solar power offers clean and accessible energy, as it is not associated with global warming and pollution. The main challenge of solar power is its uncontrollable fluctuation since it is highly depending on other weather variables. Thus, forecasting energy generation is important for smart grid operators and solar electricity providers since they are required to ensure the power continuity in order to dispatch and properly prepare to store the energy. In this study, we propose an efficient comparison framework for forecasting the solar power that will be generated 36 h in advance from Yeongam solar power plant located in South Jeolla Province, South Korea. To prevent driver accidents in cities, local governments have established policies to limit city speeds and create child protection zones near schools. However, if the same policy is applied throughout a city, it can be difficult to obtain smooth traffic flows. A driver generally obtains visual information while driving, and this information is directly related to traffic safety. In this study, we propose a novel geometric visual model to measure drivers' visual perception and analyze the corresponding information using the line-of-sight method. Three-dimensional point cloud data are used to analyze on-site three-dimensional elements in a city, such as roadside trees and overpasses, which are normally neglected in urban spatial analyses. To investigate drivers' visual perceptions of roads, we have developed an analytic model of three types of visual perception. By using this proposed method, this study creates a risk-level map according to the driver's visual perception degree in Pangyo, South Korea. With the point cloud data from Pangyo, it is possible to analyze actual urban forms such as roadside trees, building shapes, and overpasses that are normally excluded from spatial analyses that use a reconstructed virtual space. Electric energy consumption forecasting is an interesting, challenging, and important issue in energy management and equipment efficiency improvement. Existing approaches are predictive models that have the ability to predict for a specific profile, i.e., a time series of a whole building or an individual household in a smart building. In practice, there are many profiles in each smart building, which leads to time-consuming and expensive system resources. Therefore, this study develops a robust framework for the Multiple Electric Energy Consumption forecasting (MEC) of a smart building using Transfer Learning and Long Short-Term Memory (TLL), the so-called MEC-TLL framework. In this framework, we first employ a k-means clustering algorithm to cluster the daily load demand of many profiles in the training set. In this phase, we also perform Silhouette analysis to specify the optimal number of clusters for the experimental datasets. Next, this study develops the MEC training algorithm, which utilizes a cluster-based strategy for transfer learning the Long Short-Term Memory models to reduce the computational time. Finally, extensive experiments are conducted to compare the computational time and different performance metrics for multiple electric energy consumption forecasting on two smart buildings in South Korea. The experimental results indicate that our proposed approach is capable of economical overheads while achieving superior performances. In recent years, Korea has sustained consistent access to remote sensed data by launching Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-3A (KOMPSAT-3A, K3A)—an updated version of the high-resolution KOMPSAT series. This KOMPSAT-3A required calibration and validation (Cal/Val) before and after its launch to enable proper functional characterization and to maintain the veracity of data collected. The Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) executed the initial prelaunch calibration in the laboratory and we performed the Cal/Val of KOMPSAT-3A during the Launch and Early Operation Phase (LEOP) in the field. Two suitable sites in Korea and Mongolia with stable weather, almost uniform terrain, and near Lambertian diffusion, provided the necessary tarp reflectance to calculate the absolute radiometric calibration coefficients. The surface reflectance was determined using 12 and four well-calibrated reference reflectance tarps employing the FieldSpec® 3(Analytical Spectral Devices Inc., Boulder, CO, USA) Spectroradiometer. Subsequently, the top of atmosphere (TOA) radiance was estimated using radiative transfer code (RTC) software based on the Atmospheric and Topographic Correction (ATCOR). In addition, cross calibration was simultaneously performed at the Libya-4 pseudo invariant calibration site (PICS) for KOMPSAT-3A TOA radiance, using the spectral band adjustment factor (SBAF) compensated Landsat 8 reflectance and the Second Simulation of Satellite Signal in the Solar Spectrum (6S) to compute cross calibration coefficients. The results of the KOMPSAT-3A absolute calibration coefficient show that the R2 values were over 0.99, implying a significant correlation for almost all bands between the TOA radiance and the KOMPSAT-3A spectral band response at both campaign sites. However, this study reveals a difference of less than 5% calibration gains for all bands compared to the prelaunch values, while the cross calibration gain is below 5% in visible bands and above 5% in the near infrared band. An effort to optimize the reliability of the absolute calibration coefficients resorted to the rigorous quantification of uncertainties amongst atmospheric conditions, the digital number (DN), the reflectance tarp, the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF), and ozone levels. The purpose of this study was to determine the minimum separation distance between aquaculture farms and ship traffic to prevent damage to either the farms or the vessels. A high-risk area in South Korea was selected for the study by overlapping shipping routes with fisheries using satellite and aerial photographs. The annual frequency of damage was calculated based on a probability distribution applied to the sea area, and a safe distance between the aquaculture farms and the traffic was derived. The Kolmogorov–Smirnov (KS) test was conducted to determine whether the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) follows the data of this study. It was found that a safe distance of at least 1000 m is needed to avoid farm or vessel damage. Then, it is possible to prevent damage to vessel propellers and fisheries locating aquaculture farms at the minimum safe distance from the traffic routes. For protection and security of these structures, the installation of a set of wirelessly Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT) sensors that can transmit the farm location to the ship's navigator were suggested. Four data-driven methods—random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), feed-forward neural network (FNN), and convolutional neural network (CNN)—are applied to discriminate surface and underwater vessels in the ocean using low-frequency acoustic pressure data. Acoustic data are modeled considering a vertical line array by a Monte Carlo simulation using the underwater acoustic propagation model, KRAKEN, in the ocean environment of East Sea in Korea. The raw data are preprocessed and reorganized into the phone-space cross-spectral density matrix (pCSDM) and mode-space cross-spectral density matrix (mCSDM). Two additional matrices are generated using the absolute values of matrix elements in each CSDM. Each of these four matrices is used as input data for supervised machine learning. Binary classification is performed by using RF, SVM, FNN, and CNN, and the obtained results are compared. All machine-learning algorithms show an accuracy of >95% for three types of input data—the pCSDM, mCSDM, and mCSDM with the absolute matrix elements. The CNN is the best in terms of low percent error. In particular, the result using the complex pCSDM is encouraging because these data-driven methods inherently do not require environmental information.
